HISTORY 1555 Olympic Highway, Brucedale It’s been 25 years since Brian and Jeanetta O’Leary rode their motorbike out to see the tiny church in Brucedale, and, unintentionally, drove straight past.

“When we came past on the highway you couldn’t see it because it was so dense. The nature strip was full of acacia trees and you couldn’t even see the church,” Jeanetta said.

In a case of, ‘seek and ye shall find’, the O’Leary’s drove to a high point and from a distance spotted the back of the church. They returned, made their way through the dense overgrowth, and pushed open the stubborn gate.

“We fell in love with it,” Jeanetta said.

Built in 1876, the Wesleyan Chapel has a long and proud history in the region. Without pews, churchgoers in the 1870’s brought boxes to sit on which were filled with home-grown produce to give to the travelling minister.

Among the faithful was a young Mary Cameron, who later became the prolific writer, poet and journalist Dame Mary Gilmore (1865-1962). She has featured on the Australian $10 note since 1993.

Dame Mary wrote about the sermons at the Brucedale Chapel.

Call it chance or destiny, Brian and Jeanetta’s love transformed the Brucedale property.

They restored the battered church which had been painted orange and blue by the former owner a ceramic artist, they cleared the grounds, built an oversized shed for Brian, then an energy-efficient home and turned the reclaiming bushland into lush, manicured gardens.

“We’re still together now so it worked out,” Brian said.

On 17 September 1995, before more than 100 guests and locals, the chapel was blessed by Catholic Bishop William Brennan for use by all denominations for weddings, christenings, and even the celebration marking the centenary of the Kangaroo March when 88 men marched from Wagga to Sydney to sign up for The First World War. Brian’s daughter was the first to get married in what’s been an endless number of weddings at the Brucedale chapel.

“Sometimes we’d have two and three weddings a day, it’s been a lot of work for us, and, at our age, it’s time for us to move on,” Jeanetta said.

“Everyone just loved coming here and word spread, It just went on like topsy,” she said.

“It just went on and on and on,” Brian said.

“We had an 85-year-old couple come out and get married and they’re still alive, they’re in their 90’s living up the coast. Fr Plunkett married them out here.”

“We get Scottish pipers, A Fijian wedding, all types of music, all sorts of cars. They come on tractors, they bring their dogs dressed up as if their dogs are like their baby, they bring their cats,” Brian said.

A godsend was when a diviner from Cootamundra discovered an underground aquifer that faithfully pumps out 60 litres of water a minute.

Now, the O’Leary’s have decided to sell this historic, stunning property.

“The auction of the property is coming up on the 24th March, but every Saturday in the month leading up to that, the property will be open for an open house inspection,” Jeanetta said.

The entire property will go under the hammer which includes the restored 1876 Wesleyan Chapel, the O’Leary’s home which has three bedrooms, two showers, open-plan kitchen, living and lounge room. The dining room features an overarching pergola complete with restored French doors from the archive room at Mount Erin’s Chapel in Wagga and another antique set of doors from Reims in France.

“We’re having an auction to see what it will bring, and we’re hoping it will sell on the day,” Jeanetta said.

For thousands of Australians who have a historic attachment to the Wesleyan Chapel or Brucedale, the 24 March auction will be one to watch.

Autumn GARDENING ACTIVITIES By pennie scott Have you felt the cooler temperatures at nighttime? Now we need to pull an extra blanket over us while we sleep. It also means the soil temperatures are cooling.

With our Mediterranean climate it’s ideal to grow an abundance of summer vegetables and fruits and, to extend their growing season, mulch – thick, organic lucerne hay – becomes your best friend again.

Whereas during summer we were using mulch to protect soil and plants from searing hot temperatures. Now its role is that of a duvet, to keep the soil warmer overnight. When soil is kept above 15C, the summer vegies will keep growing.

Spring is often a cleaning-out time, but, in

reality, it needs to be an all-year activity. The psychological act of decluttering and culling improves with practice, and with many benefits, as you’ll see.

It’s important we continually edit our homes as to take stock of what we’re living with and it’s a great ability to cull and declutter. Many people find it very difficult to let go of stuff and, as a consequence, they rarely realise they are hindering their own abundance.

But, when you’ve had a good clean and tidy, including throwing some things out along the way, you feel a sense of peace. Less stress is good. If the space we live, eat and sleep in is tidy and not cluttered with stuff, we literally make way for the good vibes to flow.

Get rid of all the unnecessary things in your home once and for all, then spend time doing more outside activities, being with friends or working on your hobby.

Tip 3 CLUTTER BLOCKS ABUNDANCE Maintain a balance between new stuff by turfing old stuff out. I don’t continually add new things into my home unless I have already edited items out, such as food. I don’t stockpile things, I buy as needed. We eat it all and then we start again. Being surrounded by clutter is also a way of avoiding our feelings. We wrap ourselves in things which makes us feel better for a moment, but it’s only adding to the problem because, when we become surrounded by too many things. How can we welcome abundance into our homes and lives when everywhere is cluttered? Abundance can mean many things, such as money. If you have unopened bills and no idea where your accounts are up to, getting on top of this clutter paves the way for abundance to be welcomed in to your home.

Tip 4 STAGNANT ENERGY Every time you clean your home you are removing negative energy and cleaning your home or workspace will make it lighter and more positive. This is a result of organising, ridding yourself of things you no longer need and removing toxic items from your environment. Just opening windows brings in fresh, positive energy.

Tip 6 BREATHE BETTER The more surface area means more available space for dust to settle. In the material known as dust the make-up can include flakes of skin, pollens, dog / cat germs and even dried faecal matter. Obviously, this needs to be kept under control, which means cleaning more often! This alone is an excellent reason to rid the house of some of that excess surface area.

Tip 7 SELL FOR MORE MONEY If you’re thinking of selling, less clutter through the house will definitely raise the value. If you’re not thinking of moving, though, just imagine that every time you edit what is in and around your house you’re actually adding value to it - what a great motivation!

S P I T P O T FOR REMOVAL AND PREVENTION When done right, and with permission, a graffiti mural can add life and character to a building or wall. Colourful and bright graffiti murals are becoming increasingly popular with the artistic form being recognised as effective ways to liven up city streets, and even being commissioned as graffiti art.

However, offensive and distasteful graffiti is an eyesore on fences and walls which have been tagged. If your property has been affected, read the following tips to help remove and prevent any graffiti which may be an unwelcome addition to your property.

USING SPECIFIC PRODUCTS Removing graffiti from a painted surface such as a wall or fence can be easy with the use of dedicated graffiti removal Products, such as Watch Dog, Selley’s Muck Off Graffiti Remover, RustOleum Graffiti Remover Gel, Goof Off Graffiti Remover and Mostenbocker’s Lift Off. For painted and coated surfaces such as road signs, mailboxes, glass and garage doors, use Watch Dog All Purpose Remover.

Suitable for delicate surfaces, All Purpose Remover is a safe, non-toxic and easy product to use. Simply spray over the graffiti area, wait one to two minutes, or until you see the graffiti starting to break down, and wipe away with a clean cloth. For tough graffiti marks, re-spray the area a second time.

(Fun fact – this product is handy to keep around the home because it also removes permanent marker, crayons and glue … so a very handy product to clean up after an art and craft project!)

For smooth, non-porous surfaces such as glass and metal, use Watch Dog Lift Away Smooth Surface Graffiti Remover. Simply spray the solution onto the affected area and leave for a minute or two, or until the graffiti starts to break away.

Using a soft cloth, or soft scrubbing brush, agitate the product on the surface to assist the breakdown of the graffiti, and reapply if necessary. Ensure the surface is thoroughly cleaned after using the Lift Away to stop additional surface coating being removed.

If the surface you need to remove the graffiti from is unpainted and porous, including brick, cement, pavers, granite or sandstone use Watch Dog Wipe Out Porous Surface Graffiti Remover. This product is designed to remove graffiti from porous surfaces without creating a ghosting or shadowing effect on the final result. Apply the product by brushing, rolling or spraying the Wipe Out to the affected surface, wait between 15 and 30 minutes and use a scrubbing brush or high-pressure hose to agitate the product on the surface. Wash away product residue with water after completing the removal process.

HIGH PRESSURE OR SAND BLASTING If the graffiti is quite large in size and on a porous, unpainted substrate, you may find the job requires a more heavy-duty removal technique than using the named products. Employing the use of a high-pressure water or sand blaster may be the most effective method of removing this type of graffiti damage and we recommend chatting to our in-store experts for professional advice on this removal method.

PAINT OVER THE GRAFFITI Painting over the graffiti with the colour of the damaged surface is an effective cover up method in a range of different situations that works best on previously painted surfaces. If the surface is dark in colour, you may choose to just paint over the graffiti to cover it up. To ensure all traces of graffiti are no longer visible, you may want to follow the steps in Tip 1 to remove the graffiti first before painting over the surface. If your sufrace is lighter in colour, we don’t recommended just painting over the graffiti as there is a high chance the graffiti will still show through, so we suggest removing the graffiti before painting.

PREVENTATIVE MEASURES After you have removed or covered the graffiti, you may want to consider applying a protective coating to help the surface area resist future graffiti. These protective coats will not make your surface completely immune to graffiti in the future, but, it will aid the removal of any future graffiti. Dulux make a variety of graffiti preventative coatings, but it is best to head into your local Inspirations Paint store to discuss which product is best for your surface type and colour.
