Painting furniture is such an easy and cheap way to transform something old into a feature piece and trawling the internet provides many ideas. You can paint chairs, dressers, console tables, frames, mirrors and, over the years, I’ve painted and transformed sad old items

If you’re after a neat finish, then a mini roller will work wonders.

If you’re after a distressed or aged look then a paintbrush will help. Paint always dries darker so remember this when choosing your paint colour.

HINT

Always do three coats of the colour to get an even finish.

into beautiful functional pieces. I can spot a bargain at a garage sale or online and, in no time, I’ll have it propped up in my garage waiting for a new lick of paint.

Here’s a list of tips to make sure your paint job lasts.

STEP FIVE: I am on the fence with this one. I say that because it all depends on what you are painting over, which paint product you’re using, and what you’re using the furniture for. If you’re painting over laminate or vinyl, you must use a good primer first because these surfaces cannot be sanded. Generally, the laminate or vinyl may not live as long as a piece of furniture which has been entirely sanded back from the beginning. If you want longevity and a nice paint finish, then sand the furniture back first. Don’t hand sand as this will take forever. Use an orbital sander (they are so cheap to buy from a hardware store).

STEP ONE:

SAND IT

SAND AGAIN If you are after a distressed look, then you can sand off the edges here and there. Just remember you’ve added a white undercoat in there so you may see some of that show up but, this look is very popular. If you want the finish to be solid, use a fine sanding block to lightly rub over the furniture to give a smooth finish before the final coat

CLEAN SURFACE

PROTECT IT

Once you’ve thoroughly sanded the surface make sure the entire surface is squeaky clean with no lint or residue.

Once sanded (or as mentioned above if you can’t sand it), you need to undercoat with a primer. A product I have used over and over is Annie Sloan Chalk Paint as it has a built-in primer to the colour you choose. I am in love with this stuff although, it’s hard to get your hands on though as you need to buy online. But if you’re not up for that then head to the hardware store and buy any undercoat primer in white and give your furniture a coat of that before you put your colour on top. Make sure the primer is fully dry and sand away any lumps or drips, so you have a clean surface.

There are a couple of ways of doing this, namely, painting on a product or using a wax. On a solid finish paint use Cabot’s Satin Water Based Polyurethane Varnish applying at least three coats. Stay away from oil based because it does give an orange tinge. If you prefer a wax I suggest Feast & Watson’s Mastertouch Carnauba Wax; this product is tops. Rub it in a circular motion with a brush, let it dry for about 20 minutes, then grab a rag and buff. Repeat a few times until the desired finish is reached.

“It has massive potential and so many options. It could be a cellar door, a boutique pub or hotel, a new food hub, a gallery, practically anything. It’s an amazing opportunity that almost never comes up,” Rachelle said.

When do you need to use an

UNDERCOAT? There are many undercoats available on the market and they are all different. Prior to applying a topcoat of paint it is important to understand what type of surface you are painting and what undercoat is needed for that specific job.

There are undercoats for timber, concrete, cement render, steel, galvanised iron, previously painted surfaces, foam, fibro and weatherboard and these are just some of the surfaces which need different types of undercoats/primers.

Undercoats are not only used as a key to make a topcoat stick but to also help with colour retention and ensuring stability of the topcoat.

You will find with most brands of exterior water-based paints such as Dulux Weathershield, lighter and pastel colours can be self-priming on most surfaces but darker colours - such as Woodland Grey and Monument will need an undercoat and this is because the darker colours have an enormous amount of tint in them.

BARE TIMBER There are many types of timber used these for building, furniture and carpentry these days.

Some are hardwoods which can be very oily and tannin-rich and these timbers should always have an undercoat, in particular, a stain blocking product which will hold back these stains.

CONCRETE Before painting concrete it is essential that you allow the concrete to cure and you must make sure that all moisture has evaporated.

In some cases this may take months such as a new slab that is quite thick. It is advisable to use an undercoat to seal the concrete off and to give the topcoat a key to stick to. This is usually the case but if you were applying a two-pack product, an undercoat may not be necessary; please check with us first.

CEMENT RENDER True cement renders are made from sand and cement which means they have a very dusty surface and are very porous. We strongly suggest an undercoat is used to help bind any loose particles and make the surface stable.

GALVANISED IRON Gal is already a coating that has gone over the top of steel to stop it from rusting and you will notice that it is very oily to touch and is nonporous. After cleaning gal, you definitely need to use an etch primer before top-coating.

STEEL An undercoat is required as steel will rust after being exposed to the elements in as little as two hours. Therefore, the undercoat needs to totally seal the surface to prevent the rust from coming through to the topcoat.

PREVIOUSLY PAINTED SURFACES This is the most misunderstood surface and to help you get the right result we need a lot of information from you. For example - Is the surface stable? Is there any peeling/cracking?

Succulents: PERFECT FOR RIVERINA GARDENS For years, succulents have had a poor reputation amongst those who’ve had a preference for tailored Europeans style gardens but, happily, these cleverly evolved plants are being appreciated in the climates in which they thrive.

Hot summers, cold winters and sporadic rain are ideal growing conditions for hundreds of plants in the cacti and succulent families.
