Wagga Wagga City Council opposite to national trend WITH fewer than 10 per cent of local government directors and executives across Australia being women, the Wagga Wagga City Council provides a stark contrast. Three of the four director positions are held by women, Janice Summerhayes
(Community Services), Caroline Angel (Commercial Operations), and Natalie Te Pohe (Finance). In recognition of International Women’s Day this week, Janice posed some questions she urges people to ask themselves, within their families, at work and in community settings.
“Are you as a man or a woman living and working here in our community, being bold to accelerate gender parity?’ “Are you acknowledging your own responsibility to do what you can to forge a more gender inclusive community and workplace?’ The directors shared their professional
experiences and agreed that being recognised for skills and abilities is vital, yet, unconscious bias is widely applied when considering women for positions of authority. “I hope these circumstances will not be considered unique when my granddaughter is an adult woman,” Janice concluded.
