s the year comes to an end, I cannot help but ask the question, “What is it we can be thankful for?”. The answer quickly hit me: African humanity and resilience. What has served to keep the African society alive and energetic is our ability to find joy and hope in community. It is our humanity and the vibrancy encapsulated in our diverse and multifaceted cultures, which serve to keep us going and proud of simply being. As we close out the year and reset, we have to think of the things that have added value and meaning to our lives, and what value we birth in the world.

to live a life humanising and ascribing dignity to all people without prejudice, and to be conscious in both our inclusion and exclusion. To be human is to hold hope for a change in the fortunes of nations close to our hearts. It is to experience the hope of finding contentment in remaining home, figuratively and literally, not only in our bodies, but on our continent. Our focus for the new year should be to rely less on external stimulants for happiness and more on self-discipline to make meaningful change in the spaces we find ourselves and in the relationships we build. It is not about wanting to change

‘OUR FOCUS for the new year should be to rely less on EXTERNAL STIMULANTS for happiness’ An even more pertinent task is to reflect on what it truly means to be human amid chaos, and how we can align ourselves more with an empathetic energy by being in relationships with others and with ourselves. The late Thomas Sankara said, “I want people to remember me as someone whose life has been helpful to humanity”. His words have inspired in me the need to be an active embodiment of humanising, knowing that being human goes beyond the physical. It is a belief that this can in no way be defined purely on one’s physical abilities, sexuality, race, or any other objective attribute – nor can this definition be made on the grounds of intellect, consciousness, or rationality. To be human is relational and built on interconnectedness, with all of creation exuding a fragrant harmony in all spheres of life – a gift from the creative energy we ascribe many names to. It is

the world and move mountains, but to hone in on that which is within our reach, pursuing excellence in all we do. To step back and ask deep, meaningful questions that invite us to reflect and take action. To learn how to manage the self before wanting to control the external, to create rhythm and balance in our days, relationships and environments. Our task is to begin the year refreshed and manage our fears, to claim our bodies, communities, minds and shortcomings, and to unleash the wealth of creativity, humanness and resilience. Embodying an identity of a people whose spirits are kindled with the joy of belonging to a humanity that never ceases to find hope, joy and pride in community. The greatest gift and goal we can set is to learn to see the humanity of the other as delicately and tenderly as we see our own. ■

o celebrate its 20th anniversary, Tissot has released a new Le Locle watch steeped in history and named after the town of watchmaking legend.

Home to the Swiss watchmaking industry in Neuchâtel since the late 17th century, Le Locle’s urban planning and watchmaking heritage is protected by UNESCO. Tissot’s workshop was later established in 1853, initially on the lower floors of the family home in Crêt-Vaillant. The Tissot Le Locle collection was launched 150 years later, in 2003, dedicated to the town where the company was founded and adhering to tradition by displaying its name in italics on the dial. The dial design was inspired by the clean lines of the town emblem – the church belfry. In this evocative description of her collaboration with Natasha Sideris, CEO and founder of Tashas Group, Collective Africa founder Nicky Greig expresses the magical touch these two partners have used to create a luxury lifestyle brand that is spreading its wings throughout the Middle East. But first, let’s go back a few steps. Many of our readers will be familiar with tashas – the elegantly casual restaurant with which Natasha changed all of our lives when it came to finding the perfect eggs Benedict, Caesar salad or Turkish delight cocktail – and so much more. With branches in most of South Africa’s capitals, tashas has become the go-to gathering place for a dead-cert quality dining experience.

in tandem – to massive acclaim amongst the local Emirati population as well as expats and tourists. “With this experience under our belt, we were able to make a calculated decision that it would be received well in other cities, such as Riyadh and Abu Dhabi,” says Natasha. “The locations that we were offered at Bujairi Terrace in Diriyah Gate in Riyadh, as well as Al Maryah Island in Abu Dhabi, were very large. The “African Lounge” concept was created – a unique space inspired by the luxurious tented safari camps in Africa, and a focused menu featuring small plates and incredible sweets.” And so the Flamingo Collection was born. Under one roof there are three luxury concepts: Flamingo Room, Collective Africa and African Lounge, all offering guests a magical journey of discovery. In Abu Dhabi, they have also added Perlage – an elegant and edgy champagne bar in partnership with Maison Perrier-Jouët. Nicky says the Middle East market has embraced this new luxury African concept because the team has been fastidious in terms of the quality of the food, products and space they offer.

An opportunity to open in Nelson Mandela Square called for something a little different, and the Flamingo Room concept was born. With all the hallmarks of tashas quality, the menu and service was top class, but it was the soft pink and gleaming brass art decor that really took the experience to a new level.

“Our approach has been meticulous and in the most refined manner possible. For decades, African products have struggled with a misleading image. In the luxury sector, most brands hail from America or Europe. However, the world is awakening to the allure of African influences in their homes and wardrobes. To possess handcrafted items infused with love, pride and passion is a true luxury. Customers in the Middle East understand this concept and have wholeheartedly embraced Collective Africa,” says Nicky.

Meanwhile, around the corner, Nicky and Richard Greig had opened Collective, an exquisite gallery of luxury African art and lifestyle objets that was a natural extension of the Charles Greig Jewellers legacy.

Collective Africa does not aim to compete with the global luxury brands available in the Middle East. “Rather, we reconnect you with your roots, the earth, and the magnificence and energy of the handmade in an extraordinary and distinct manner,” Nicky adds.

Friends for many years, the Sideris/Greig team decided this was a partnership waiting to happen. They took Flamingo Room and Collective to Jumeirah Al Naseem in Dubai, where for seven years the restaurant and boutique have traded

STARS IN THEIR EYES Operalia 2023 First Prize winner, Julie Roset, a soprano from France, feels fortunate to have a job developed from a passion – and talent – for singing, with potential for travel. She says she might never have otherwise discovered Africa. “I feel really lucky that this year Operalia was in Cape Town, because I loved it so much. On the day of the final I went up Table Mountain. It was really helpful to have this kind of surrounding to stay calm.” Julie says she was “really stressed” before her captivating final performance of the Bell Song (Où va la jeune Hindoue) from Léo Delibes’ Lakmé, but once the orchestra joined in after her starting a capella, she could relax. “I’m really happy because I had fun telling the story of the fairy of the bells. Our job is to bring the character to the audience, to bring them to a new world, and I love this aria for that. And the music is so beautiful,” she says. “My teacher always tells me, ‘Sing with your heart,’ and I think I did that.”

UNFORGETTABLE MOMENTS Runner-up Eugénie Joneau, a mezzosoprano from France, won a further two prizes – the Birgit Nilsson prize and the Zarzuela prize, bringing her winnings to $45 000. The Birgit Nilsson is awarded every three years for outstanding achievement in classical music and opera. Plácido was the first laureate in 2009.

Eugénie describes Operalia as “an extraordinary journey… unique, especially because of the prestigious jury. I’m so honoured to be the Zarzuela winner; it is a repertoire which I fell in love with. Maestro Domingo has a passion for this beautiful music and he shared this with all of us. Meeting and being conducted by him was fabulous. I’ll remember these few minutes all my life.” Plácido shared the podium for the Gala finals with maestro Kamal Khan, showering praise on the musicians of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra for their ability to perform their own concerts as well as accompany ballet and opera.

SHARING GOOD TIMES One of the evening’s emotional highlights was the closing performance by all 34 contestants of Operalia’s Anthem, with text and music by Plácido Domingo Jnr. Quarterfinalist Luvo Maranti agrees, explaining that the lyrics are about “embarking on a journey (of a competition like Operalia) and sharing good times. Operalia is a competition, but for the most part it’s about networking and getting to see people. It’s about working hard and [filling] yourself with a passion for music.” What has he taken away from the competition? “It was a pleasure to be part of something of that magnitude. It opened my eyes in terms of the level of preparation, focus, and sense of individuality [required]. As much as we know opera is a very physical thing, it’s also a mental thing. You must be mentally prepared for it. I will work harder, in fact.”

uxury means different things to different people. One might consider the technology of a new car as the ultimate luxury, while another regards the comfort of the drive as the quotient.

The fourth generation Lexus LX arrived in South Africa last year, and regardless of what your definition of luxury is, it embodies just about every facet of splendour. Its cloud-like ride and list of lavish amenities define it as the ultimate road trip cruiser, while its off-road underpinnings encourage the driver to take the path less travelled. It’s not a small car – in fact, one could refer to it as humungous. You have the option of either four, five or seven seats, depending on the derivative you choose. But if it’s the ultimate in luxury you’re after, the flagship four-seater LX 600 VIP model comes with independent, electrically adjustable heated and ventilated seats in the rear, which not only deliver 860mm of leg room, but also recline and will give you a massage. In the rear of this model, there’s also wireless smartphone charging, four-zone climate control, and twin 11.6-inch displays with HDMI and wireless compatibility, all of which are operated via a centrally located rear control panel. While we are on the topic of features, all LX models are specced to the hilt. Two central screens – a 12.3-inch touchscreen and a seven-inch display – house everything you need to control the LX. There are a few more traditional buttons around, which will be welcomed by those of us who still prefer a volume knob to an onscreen button. If neither of those appeal to you, most features can be controlled using your voice and the words, “Hey Lexus.” Another great feature is the fingerprint identification for the ignition. You can register up to 10 fingerprints to authorise the engine start. On a more functional note, the LX has four cameras that provide unobstructed views of the surrounds – handy for a vehicle of this size. This multi-terrain monitor ensures you are able to see the front, rear and panoramic views.

Lexus’ new Tazuna cockpit concept, which takes its name from a Japanese word describing a rider’s control of their horse using the reins, organises the principal controls and information displays within the driver’s immediate sightline, maintaining the principle of hands on the wheel, eyes on the road. Under the bonnet is a choice between a turbodiesel or turbopetrol engine. The LX 500d models sport a 3.3-litre V6 engine with outputs of 225kW and 700Nm, while the LX 600 models boast a 3.5-litre petrol engine producing 305kW and 650Nm. Both offer smooth acceleration, but the petrol pot gives you a hint more exhilaration. If fuel costs are a consideration, you’ll want to opt for the turbodiesel with its claimed consumption of 8.3l/100km – a far cry from the 600’s 11.3/100km figure, which will be higher in the real world (I saw figures of up to 14.5l/100km).

Lexus talks about the LX experience as being one of unflustered comfort. This vehicle is based on the Toyota Land Cruiser 300, which is one of the most capable off-roaders available. No matter where you take the LX, you’ll almost always be able to get out of a sticky situation. Mud, sand, snow – whatever the terrain – the LX has your back. You could consider the LX a sort of land yacht, and so it does come with a hefty price tag. It kicks off at just over R2.2 million, with the flagship 600 VIP model setting you back just over R2.6 million. But Lexus has added every creaturecomfort to these cars, leaving you wanting for nothing. The LX is the height of luxury and the quintessence of comfort. It showcases some of the latest features in automotive technology and it has the off-roading CV of a Land Cruiser legend. This is something quite special. ■

I think music enthusiasts – whether they collect music digitally or in a physical format – appreciate the access we have due to streaming. There’s an allure to records, but I enjoy streaming just as much. When it comes to which music I decide to collect on records, it’s the albums that were never released on vinyl before, or ones that have been reissued, or maybe those I’ve never had the opportunity to purchase in the past. WHEN YOU TRAVEL, DO YOU GO VINYL SHOPPING? WHICH CITY HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE FOR THIS? I would say

This speaks to his other passion – music – a topic Andile is only too happy to discuss.

DO YOU REMEMBER THE FIRST VINYL YOU EVER BOUGHT?

The first record I bought was Tracy Chapman’s Crossroads. I bought it in December 2009, 20 years after it was released. I was a student studying marketing and was actually drawn to the cover before the music. I didn’t even have a record player at the time, and when I eventually got one, I played it non-stop in my mother’s kitchen. It became the most played album at home. I’d like to think it’s a humble collection, but I haven’t counted how many records I actually have. Some of my favourite albums include Africa/Brass by The John Coltrane Quartet, Great Moments With by McCoy Tyner, The Boy’s Doin’ It by Hugh Masekela, The Black Fairy by La Mont Zeno Theatre, Black Renaissance by Harry Whitaker, and Promises by Floating Points, Pharoah Sanders & The London Symphony Orchestra.

Tokyo is still by far the best city to visit as a record collector. Apart from being at the forefront of the “Otaku” culture, they collect obsessively. You’re in for a treat when visiting record stores there. You might find your favourite artist’s discography on one shelf in near-mint condition, including unreleased versions. picked up a record I’ve been looking for a while now – Bennie Maupin’s The Jewel In The Lotus. It’s a harmonically rich album with a predominance of avantgarde, fusion and experimental sounds. It’s a Japanese pressing and is quite hard to find in perfect condition, and it costs a fortune if you do find one. I picked it up at a record store in Seoul. ■

he spirit of female entrepreneurship has been part of Veuve Clicquot’s DNA ever since Madame Clicquot took the reins of the maison when her husband died in 1805. It was a time when most women neither worked nor held a bank account, yet Madame Clicquot proceeded to bring innovation and creativity to the industry — inventing the first vintage champagne as well as the first rosé, ever. It is this audacious spirit of courage and tenacity that inspired the creation of the Veuve Clicquot Bold Woman Awards which recently celebrated four new winners: Ndidi Nwuneli and Tarebi Alebiosu in Nigeria, and Claire Blanckenberg and Zama Ngcobo in South Africa. The four join a global community of over 450 audacious businesswomen across 27 countries recognised for their entrepreneurial prowess. For nearly 50 years, the House of Veuve Clicquot has honoured women who have built, taken on, or developed a business. 2019 saw the launch of the international programme, Bold by Veuve Clicquot – a series of initiatives to generate conversations around the world, designed for more impact and inclusiveness. This year, Veuve Clicquot created the Bold Open Database of female entrepreneurs – a global network of bold women entrepreneurs free of cultural, geographical and technological barriers and aimed at stimulating social and economic development.

In South Africa, the Bold Woman Award winner, Reel Gardening founder Claire Blanckenberg, has innovated the homefood-cultivation sector. Comprising a simple colour-coded system of embedded seed tape, her patented Garden in a Box has revolutionised how family nutrition is approached while providing an estimated 48 100 households with food security. “When I embarked on this path, there were very few female entrepreneurs to mentor me. Today, as one of those women, I hope to inspire others at the start of their journey,” she says. Providing specialist advice in another male-dominated industry, South Africa’s Bold Future Award winner Zama Ngcobo founded a boutique Black femaleled commercial law firm called WMN Attorneys Inc. Prioritising the progression of women and the youth, her growing

law practice promotes a grass-roots approach to the development of legal practitioners. “I originally set out to create a safe space for young, Black, female lawyers to thrive and am immensely proud to represent all of those categories as the Bold Future Award winner,” she comments.

COLLABORATION

Two of this year’s award winners have driven a new way of thinking in the world of agriculture. In Nigeria, Ndidi Nwuneli created Aace Foods when she realised how much of the food in Africa was imported and, as a continent, our high rate of malnutrition. Aace Foods processes the likes of spices and snacks from local African farmers in order to displace imports and nourish its people. Travelling to Ghana during the festive season has become somewhat of a pilgrimage for many, one which was reignited by the “Year of the Return”, a campaign proclaimed by President Nana Akufo-Addo in 2019 to bring diasporan Africans home. With an abundance of sunshine and little rainfall in December, Accra offers holidaymakers a range of immersive experiences, from wildlife and surfing to a robust nightlife, vibrant arts and culture circuit, and deep insight into its rich heritage and history. Earlier this year, the inaugural Black Star Line Festival drew a crowd of 52 000 people to Accra with a lineup that included rapper Vic Mensa, singer Erykah Badu and T-Pain. The festival was inspired by Jamaican activist and political leader Marcus Garvey, who founded the Black Star Line, a shipping line that created economic opportunities for Black workers between North America, the Caribbean and Africa. It was spearheaded by the deeply cool Chance the Rapper, who aims to roll out the festival in Jamaica and Brazil. But if there’s one person who knows the heartbeat of Ghana, it’s Abdul Karim Abdullah, CEO and co-founder of AfroFuture Festival (formerly Afrochella), and Ghanaian ambassador for tourism. A master in event curation, he started AfroFuture because nothing like it existed in Ghana. “We wanted to communicate culture through food, art, music and fashion because these are simple connectors. Each part has its fans – I happen to be a fan of all of them,” says Abdul. This year’s two-day event is headlined by afrobeat superstars Davido, J Hus and Black Sherif, together with other local and international musical acts, and takes place at El Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on 28 and 29 December 2023. “The beauty of Afrofuture is you could be partying, and to the left of you might be Boris Kodjoe or Bozoma Saint John,” says Abdul.

She is also the owner of the highly respected Hair Lounge on London’s Portobello Road and has her own line of haircare products, Manketti by Charlotte Mensah. Her newest product, the Manketti Oil Salt Scrub, was unveiled at a star-studded event graced by her close friend, British Vogue’s outgoing editor-in-chief Edward Enninful, as well as influencer Sarah Langa. While Charlotte is based in London, she grew up in Darkuman near North Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, in a family compound built by her grandparents. “It was a multigenerational household where love shone through. I spent my early years running around with my siblings, cousins and kids in the local community under the stewardship of my grandparents,” says Charlotte. “Growing up in Darkuman is the foundation of what you see me doing now. The idea of the salt scrub came from my Aunty

ON THE EDGE OF PARADISE THE OKAVANGO DELTA – A NATURAL WONDER OF THE WORLD – IS A WEB OF WATERWAYS THAT TEEMS WITH WILDLIFE AND IS HOME TO TWO OF AFRICA’S FINEST LUXURY CAMPS WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHS JARED RUTTENBERG

I

t’s a natural spectacle and a UNESCO heritage site that attracts people from all over the world. An ancient conversation between rainfalls thousands of kilometres away in the Angolan mountains and the watery wilderness of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. This previous life-giving water traverses a continent until the Delta’s two fault lines coerce it into slowing down, dramatically fanning it out over the land. The result is virescent slivers of landscape, intersected by blue-veined canals and shrubbery. Along these waterways, wildlife revels in the annual rainfall. Elephants swim, pods of hippos protect their territories and the lechwe – the aqua-adapted antelope – leave magnificent sprays of water as they dart along the water edges. I’d earmarked four nights to celebrate my 200th assignment as a travel journalist, and I hoped it would be something remarkable. When an invitation to “discover Earth’s ultimate untamed places” in the Okavango Delta was offered, I knew the immense African sky of stars had aligned. The accessibility from South Africa couldn’t be more convenient – just over two hours from Cape Town, and I’d landed in Botswana’s Maun. A breathtaking 30-minute flight north, and I was in camp and ready for the magic that lay ahead.

P L A I N S

With its waterside setting and recent refurbishment of both the camp’s exterior and interiors, it’s no surprise that Vumbura Plains is a favourite destination in the Wilderness Delta collection. Even though I was visiting outside of the flood season (June to August), Vumbura Plains has perennial water, so the camp is an enticing choice for year-round visitors. The rooms are luxurious and offer all the creature comforts, including a splash pool and outdoor showers. They’re also built directly onto the water, and when opening the door to our suite for the first time, we were greeted by three elephants happily grazing on the water’s edge beside our pool. Itching to head out and explore, there was no better way to initiate my Delta experience than with one of its most iconic experiences – the Mokoro. These traditional dugout canoes are used to navigate the shallow waters of the Delta and allow you to meet some of the smaller water-bound creatures. It’s a safari at a slower and more attentive pace. Staying on the water, we safaried by boat down the water canals. Turning a corner, we came across more elephants splashing about – clearly as surprised as we were. Ten minutes later, we were given one more parting shot. A sunrise that effortlessly painted every inch of the sky and the clouds. On safari, one usually spends a fair amount of time of the day bouncing on the back of a game vehicle, so it may as well be done in style. Wilderness game-viewing vehicles offer comfy extra touches: charging points on board for when the phone battery strains from all the wildlife snapping, six-seaters instead of the usual nine-seaters with convenient central storage units, and plush armrests, which doubled up as great stabilisers when taking photographs. Perhaps Vumbura Plains’ best-kept secret, however, is the daily sunrise spectacle: the camp is east facing and every morning the sky glows red. Sitting beside the fire with freshly brewed coffee as the sun rises, one is reminded every few minutes by the camp’s resident hippos that there isn’t a more fitting African wakeup routine.

Mombo is often touted as one of the Delta’s finest original luxury camps, and guests have experienced the magic of the Delta here for more than three decades. As the very affable Gee Gee led us to our tented suite, she heard me gasp and was quick to offer a “Welcome to the camp of plenty”. Each ultra-spacious suite is a marriage of three tented spaces – a lounge with a bar, bedroom area and a wonderful large bathroom. A balcony with a plunge pool, sala (outdoor daybed), dining area, and outdoor shower wraps itself around the entire space. Mombo is surrounded by an abundance of wildness. During the flood and rainy seasons, the water approaches the luxury camp, attracting countless game species. The months between the annual winter flooding and summer rains are known as the green season, as once the water recedes from the plains, it transforms them into lush fertile lands teeming with life. Our first game drive alone took in bat-eared foxes, hyenas, giraffes, elephants, leopards, and a variety of antelope species. The ecosystems here create a varied safari with the unique combination of riverine forest, woodland, marsh and floodplain. The staff takes immense pride in the flagship camp – perhaps no one as much as head chef Tonderai Chipfupi. In addition to a shift towards sustainable menus, the Wilderness camps offer a celebrated focus on plant-based eating. Seasoned safarigoers will know that constant eating can be a challenge, and the combination of these persuasive and highly nutritious meals meant I never felt uncomfortable or lazy. Elevated boardwalks connect the central lodge to the suites – this includes two towering bridges from which you can observe the wildlife below – they’re even high enough for elephants to pass underneath. Dining and lounge spaces are many, and there’s a separate spa and 12-metre infinity pool. The lodge has also benefitted from some recent additions such as a new fire deck, intimate dining pods and a walk-in wine cellar. Days before leaving for the trip, I mentioned to a friend in the safari industry that I was heading to Mombo. Being one the most seasoned safari travellers I know, his immediate response was: “Mombo is my favourite camp in Africa. When I retire, I’ll happily offer my time as a barman, just to be there.” I now understand his sentiment, and who knows, when you do have the privilege of visiting this paradise, you may just find him behind the bar, and a travel writer behind the coffee machine.

The cocktails are unique and the food tells a story. Our pairing experiences are exclusive and luxurious. I take pleasure in spending time with my guests and you’ll often find me on the restaurant floor. A MEMORABLE MEAL YOU’VE RECENTLY MADE? In Ghana, we have a cheese called

wagashi that’s made from fresh cow’s milk and mixed with a sour plant. Once mixed, it reacts and becomes a cottage cheese-like substance. At a farm, I milked the cow and made traditional wagashi. I then went to a millet field to get fresh millet and used these ingredients to make a wagashi and millet salad. Millet and sorghum are some of the oldest grains in the world and abundant in Africa, and are deeply rooted in our heritage. HOW DOES YOUR BACKGROUND INFLUENCE YOUR MENU? My food and culinary

journey reflect my life experiences. I come from Congo and I’ve travelled to France, the UK, Canada, Japan and Brazil, and I’ve learnt about different cultures’ ingredients and cooking techniques. I make a tartare – this is a French cooking technique, and I mixed in yuzu (a Japanese citrus) infused with passionate fruit and Prekese (a local spice). A dish like this becomes a mix of Japan, Africa and France. STAPLE INGREDIENTS IN YOUR HOME KITCHEN: Ginger and chilli. Ginger is an antiinflammatory, with antioxidants, and has the capacity to burn calories and boost the metabolism. I often drink ginger and lemon water.

baby girls and an amazing wife that I love spending time with. If I’m not with them, I go to the spa or gym, or to the beach. YOUR ULTIMATE TRAVEL DESTINATION?

Outside of Africa, it would have to be London. I love London – its more home for me than Congo as I lived there for more than 20 years. Second would be my hometown, Congo. I’ve never been to South Africa, but I hope to go there one day. WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR 2024?
