’Tis Season the Style, sparkle and glamorous getaways!
Chandelier by Philippe Parreno

Here’s what I know without a shadow of a doubt – I love my friends more than words can express. And before you accuse me of being Captain Obvious –“Everyone loves their friends, Lerato,” I hear you say – but let me present some evidence to you…

While I do eat oysters, I don’t love them. However, as you know, from Sanpellegrino to Laurent-Perrier, I love bubbles, and I’ve learnt that the two often go together. Nine years ago in Namibia’s Walvis Bay, my friend Petrina introduced me to oysters that made me turn a corner, and I was able to enjoy the summertime duo. I may not be wild about oysters, but I get it; it’s a communal thing. Besides, it goes quickly because you rarely eat more than three.

Next, I will go to a second location, but make no mistake, this is where I draw the line. If I’m having a great night out, my friends can twist my arm to head to another venue, but I usually bow out when talks of a third location come up. Nothing good comes out of the third spot – it’s usually after midnight, and if you find yourself searching for an ATM at 2am – abort mission! Because even if the black don’t crack, black does get hungover, broken, and tired.

But nothing proves how much I love my friends more than when I’m unsure of myself, nervous, or excited. As I’ve grown older, I’ve lost some wonderful human beings simply because we were no longer growing towards each other. But as I’ve lost friends, I’ve also gained some incredible people who love me softly and fiercely. My core group of friends is based in Cape Town, and the others are in New York, so I’ve learnt how crucial being intentional is when you have long distance friendships.

My friends and I enjoy celebrating life, each other, and the small wins. This last issue of the year is about coming together with the people you love to create unforgettable memories. If you’re looking for a gift to buy (or hint at wanting it), Leigh Herringer has put together the ultimate gift guide of the season (page 35), and you should see the dancing-queen heels she’s chosen for you (page 22)! Eight years after interviewing Benoît Gouez, the cellarmaster at Moët & Chandon, I got to sit down with the Maison’s CEO and President, Sybille Scherer, at a Champagne Day dinner co-hosted with Thebe Magugu (page 48) to talk about African savoir-faire.

We’ve got advice on which drop-top to buy with your bonus (page 56), which beauty products you should pack for your holiday (page 24), and all you need to know about the must-visit hotel this festive season – Steyn City Hotel by Saxon. We are the first publication to exclusively shoot there (page 42), and I’m told The Don is the first drink you should order.

Whether you’re spending time with your family, friends, or significant other, remember that you made it to the end of 2024 when others didn’t. You’re blessed. Here’s to 2025, here’s to joy, and here’s to you!

And remember, if they suggest a third location, say ‘thanks, but no thanks’.

A JOURNEY OF SOUTH AFRICAN ELEGANCE &INNOVATION

METCON MEETS MAXHOSA AFRICA IN A COLLECTION FROM SOUTH AFRICA’S LEADING LUXURY FASHION LABEL AND THE WORLD OF FINE HANDCRAFTED JEWELLERY

MAXHOSA AFRICA by Laduma Ngxokolo has for many years been heralded as South Africa’s most iconic luxury fashion label, pushing the boundaries of design by infusing traditional heritage with all the hallmarks of modern luxury. Sealing its global status on the fashion block, the brand recently opened a boutique in New York City as well as on Sandton City’s Diamond Walk.

Laduma has now added the luxury touch to his label with a fine jewellery collection that is 100 percent South African-made using the very latest in colour technology. With vibrant hues at the centre of the MAXHOSA AFRICA design signature, it made sense that the MetCon x MAXHOSA AFRICA jewellery collection would have a colour theme as its foundation.

Enter Invicon, the brainchild of a team of innovative ceramic scientists who have crafted a new technology that seals in the vibrant colours of this new jewellery collection. Gerhard Zanghellini and Peter Bubendorfer use the principles of composite material in the dental industry in both jewellery and watch design. It is these high-tech materials in Invicon that lend the colourful collection unmatchable colours and a luxurious lustre.

The jewellery collection is a celebration of African culture.

By seamlessly blending MAXHOSA AFRICA’s signature Xhosainspired geometric patterns with MetCon’s craftsmanship, each jewellery piece reflects the rich tapestry of Africa’s cultural heritage. The design of each piece has traditional patterns – the signature of Laduma’s work. It is these geometric motifs that caught the attention of the fashion world at Paris Fashion Week 2024.

Grant Crosse, managing director of MetCon, says this uniquely South African project is one to be celebrated.

“In this remarkable journey, MetCon is proud to join hands with Laduma Ngxokolo, reflecting a shared vision of honouring African culture while pushing the boundaries of design. Together, we are bringing African heritage to the global stage through exceptional craftsmanship, ensuring that the influence of MAXHOSA AFRICA continues to expand while staying true to its roots.”

While Laduma’s journey started as a designer expressing his cultural identity through fashion, the label has grown into a global phenomenon, employing more than 300 people. His work is celebrated in museums such as the Smithsonian and the Museum of Modern Art, where the MAXHOSA AFRICA designs are acknowledged not just for their beauty, but for their cultural and historical significance.

BUDISM COUTURE, THE LUXURY FASHION HOUSE FOUNDED BY BUDI ADJI AND PHILIPP ALTHOF, UNVEILS ITS MUCH-ANTICIPATED WOMEN’S HEELS COLLECTION, METICULOUSLY CRAFTED IN ITALY

This summer, BUDISM COUTURE unveils a captivating women’s shoe collection, marking a new chapter in the Cape Town-based luxury brand’s evolution. Founded by Budi Adji and Philipp Althof in Hong Kong in 2014, it now has a global clientele and loyal followers across Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. For more than a decade, Budi has been creating exquisite couture gowns, and now the shoe collection expands his creative reach into the world of footwear; a long-held dream realised. “I’ve always wanted to make shoes, they’re so beautiful and graceful,” he says.

Known for its exquisite hand-embroidered gowns and custom-made couture, the new collection of heels is an exciting extension of BUDISM COUTURE’s fashion legacy. The range features a stunning array of sandals, pumps, and platforms, all crafted in Italy. Each pair showcases the signature “BC” logo in hand-brushed champagne metal, signifying the brand’s commitment to quality and sophistication.

Raised in Indonesia and influenced by his multicultural experiences in countries like Singapore, the UK, Switzerland, South Africa, Hong Kong, and China, Budi’s designs are inspired by a global perspective, as well as his obsession with the art of couture. His fascination with fine handmade pieces began in childhood, honing skills in needlecraft and knitting before embarking on a successful career in fashion. This keen eye for detail has earned him recognition from prestigious organisations, and his work with BUDISM COUTURE now reflects a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern luxury.

The new collection reflects his signature approach, combining artistry with functionality. “High heels are wearable architecture,” says Philipp, Budi’s partner, highlighting the design process behind each pair. The two-year journey involved rigorous research, client trials, and collaboration with Italian artisans. “Creating a high heel is incredibly complex,” Budi explains, noting that each pair includes up to 70 components, with even the smallest change impacting the fit and comfort. For Budi, the collection is also a tribute to his sister, an avid highheel enthusiast whose collection once inspired him.

BUDISM COUTURE’s new heels cater to fashion-forward woman. “This launch invites every woman to embrace the grace, strength, and allure that high heels bring,” he says. With prices starting at R12 880, each pair of shoes is more than a stylish accessory – they’re a statement of opulence and craftsmanship.

THE ICONIC CHAMPAGNE PYRAMID

Champagne cascading down a tower of glasses is an exquisite celebration highlight and a ritual that was invented by the Maison. To construct a champagne pyramid for roughly six to 20 guests, use a 1,5l Magnum bottle of champagne and make sure it’s well chilled to minimise foaming. Use identical wide-brimmed “coupe” glasses or white wine glasses, carefully laying out a base of glasses in a tight square or a flower-like rounded formation. For each layer, gradually decrease the number of glasses to form a pyramid shape. Pour the champagne slowly, allowing it to overflow and trickle into the glasses on the level below, filling until they overflow and fill the glasses below them, and so on. Remember to place a tray underneath for any spills.

THE PLAYFUL NEW YEAR’S EVE CELEBRATION

With the arrival of each new year comes a desire to see things di erently. No other champagne embodies this attitude more than Ice Impérial – the world’s first champagne specially created to be enjoyed over ice. Freeing champagne from its ageold rules of etiquette, add festive ice cubes for a bold and glamorous style.

THE CHIC COCKTAIL PARTY

Versatile and sparkling, Moët Impérial and its blush version, Moët Impérial Rosé, are perfect for gatherings where mingling, music, and laughter join the party. Each year, cellarmaster Benoît Gouez strives to make Moët Impérial a balanced blend that always maintains three essential elements: a bright fruitiness, a seductive palate, and an elegant maturity. For larger parties, Moët Impérial Magnums will set the night alight.

CREATE MEMORABLE MOMENTS THIS FESTIVE SEASON WITH MOËT & CHANDON’S RICH PORTFOLIO OF CHAMPAGNES TO SUIT EVERY KIND OF GATHERING

Celebrations Chic

Nothing gets a special occasion started like popping a cork o a bottle of champagne, but there are a few ways to elevate the experience when it comes to chic entertaining. According to Marie-Christine Osselin at Moët & Chandon’s home, Château de Saran, champagne should be kept in the fridge for a few hours – or days in advance – and then chilled 15 minutes before drinking in a bucket filled with one-third water and two-thirds ice cubes. Moët & Chandon believe the best way to enjoy champagne is not in a flute but in a white wine glass, as the larger bowl allows the wine to expand and express its full bouquet and complexities. The Maison has designed the 870 Glass, which, at the pinnacle of winemaking, craftsmanship, and science, not only expresses Moët & Chandon champagnes to their fullest, but reveals an extraordinary 870 000 bubbles per serving.

THE PERFECT GIFT

We love the luxury of gifts that are remembered long after they’re enjoyed, and Moët & Chandon’s Grand Vintages are all about individuality. A stunning holiday gift for a host in its sleek black packaging, 2024 saw the emergence from the cellar of Grand Vintage 2016, an aged champagne of distinguished character, blended exclusively with grapes from a single year’s harvest. Highly appreciated by champagne connoisseurs and epicureans who look for a taste of true sophistication.

Combine this with Sandhurst’s Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa –so openly loved by Nelson Mandela, Jay-Z rapped about it in his song with Beyoncé, Mood 4 Eva, saying ‘At the Saxon, Madiba Suite, like Mandela’ – it has been an innovator in redefining African luxury for 24 years.

AN ICONIC PARTNERSHIP

Steyn City Hotel by Saxon brings together the best of both worlds. Located in City Centre at Steyn City, the hotel offers 50 elegantly designed apartments, including one- and two-bedroom suites, a three-bedroom penthouse, and a luxurious four-bedroom Presidential Suite. Guests are welcomed by a stylish cocktail bar and reception area on the ground floor, while an exclusive rooftop pool and bar provide an elevated experience. All of Steyn City’s amenities can also be enjoyed by hotel guests, making it an ideal destination for relaxation and recreation.

The hotel itself is a marvel, blending contemporary architecture with the Steyn City’s natural surroundings. The interiors, crafted by Amanda Elliott, co-owner of Design Collective and the hotel’s interior architectural designer, are an inviting fusion of elegance and comfort. “We get our inspiration from our surroundings. The city has a lot

of greenery and plants. Everything’s indigenous so it grows well, creating a lush landscape,” she explains, citing nature as the inspiration for the hotel’s green hues.

Amanda’s (pictured right) design approach centres around creating spaces that offer both a retreat from the world and a connection to the South African landscape. “We brought the greens into our design, the wallpaper, and artwork selections so it follows a thread from the outdoors into the indoors, creating a seamless storyline that offers guests a sense of home away from home.”

The team behind Steyn City Hotel by Saxon is equally impressive, and each member brings a wealth of expertise and dedication to this new venture. Steven Louw, CEO of Steyn City Properties, is thrilled to see the vision come to life.

“This project is more than just a hotel; it’s a testament to our commitment to creating a world-class lifestyle estate,” he explains. “Steyn City is built on the belief that luxury living should be accessible. This hotel is a seamless extension of that vision, offering guests an experience that’s as enriching as it is exclusive. Part of this experience comes through the setting which creates a connection with nature.”

At the operational helm is hotel manager David Roux, who has worked for South African luxury train, Rovos Rail, and whose dedication to exceptional service ensures each guest’s stay is both memorable and seamless. “Whether you’re here for leisure, with access to golf, the beautiful lagoon, or the spa we’re opening in April 2025, we cater to everyone,” he says. The hotel’s inviting atmosphere is evident to everyone. “Amanda did an outstanding job,” Roux adds. “There’s a sense of harmony throughout the spaces.”

Amanda highlights the thoughtfulness behind each design choice. “We incorporated sculptural elements, like the screens with intricate patterns that create different reflections, and chandeliers crafted from broken glass that’s softened and then wired together. These accessories bring texture and depth to the space.” She also explains that the design plays with light in dynamic ways. “We wanted elements that transform with the time of day – how they look in the afternoon shifts as evening falls, and as the light hits them, the patterns change direction. That’s the kind of depth we aim for in our designs; something that goes beyond the initial look.”

Steyn City Hotel by Saxon is a celebration of South African culture, artistry, and legacy. “Every part of this project, from manufacturing to fabrics, was sourced and made locally. We’re committed to creating as small a carbon footprint as possible, and we’re fortunate to have some truly amazing designers and suppliers right here in South Africa,” says Amanda.

Launched in the same year as the 30th anniversary of South Africa’s democracy, this collaboration serves as a fitting tribute to the country’s journey and growth.

“We’re incredibly proud to be part of this landmark moment,” reflects George.

“Our goal is to create a space that mirrors South Africa’s spirit and beauty, a place where guests can experience the best of what our country has to offer.”

From the thoughtfully designed rooms to the carefully curated culinary experiences, Steyn City Hotel by Saxon embodies a perfect blend of luxury and legacy. It’s not merely a place to stay – it’s a destination that reflects the best of South African hospitality and a shared vision that brings it to life. ■

HONOURING VISION AND LEADERSHIP –AND THE LOVE OF RUM – THE DON IS A SIGNATURE COCKTAIL THAT EMBODIES SOPHISTICATION AND BOLD FLAVOUR WORDS LERATO TSHABALALA

Guild is a vibrant restaurant and shared working space situated in Steyn City’s lively City Centre, just a short distance from the Steyn City Hotel by Saxon. It also offers versatile conference venues, perfect for dynamic meetings and events.

Amanda Elliott, interior architectural designer for Steyn City Hotel by Saxon and co-owner of Design Collective, explains how she curated the space around the bar, “Every element you see is bespoke. For us, a project is never truly finished, which is why we always create a narrative; it gives us a foundation to build on and evolve. My favourite parts of the hotel are definitely the bar and the reception screens. We handle every detail with care, right down to the artworks and design accessories. We’re even involved in back-of-house elements like lighting placement, ensuring that each piece is thoughtfully positioned rather than randomly installed.”

Hotel manager David Roux is particularly proud of the role Guild plays within the hotel. “The Guild restaurant is not only a place to dine; it’s a gathering spot, a place where guests can relax and connect,” he says. “Liesl Catsavis, our head chef, has arguably crafted the best breakfast menu I’ve ever seen. It caters to everyone’s tastes, offering what I can only describe as the most delicious home-style cooking with a touch of elegance. We serve a beautiful breakfast, a varied lunch, and have an array of small bites and sushi. Above the restaurant, we offer shared work spaces, perfect for booking a desk for the day or reserving meeting rooms. And, of course, after a hard working day, you can come down later for a nibble and unwind over a drink,” shares David.

“Our signature cocktail, The Don, was created in honour of the managing director, Mr George Cohen, during the last phases of Covid,” explains Karabo Modibedi, barman at Steyn City Hotel by Saxon, when asked which drink is a must order. “After the team had spent some time with him, confined in the hotel during the hard restrictions, they knew all his favourite ingredients. So in celebration of Mr Cohen and his contribution, not only to all our careers but also towards the hotel itself, the cocktail came to life.” ■

unique spirit where each decanter is literally more than 100 years in the making, LOUIS XIII is the jewel in the crown of the Rémy Martin cognac universe and a legacy that the family behind the brand does not take for granted. It takes a certain kind of person to work with passion and commitment on a project that they may never see to its complete fruition. Such is the role of the Cellar Master who works on each decanter of precious LOUIS XIII Cognac, creating blends of eaux de vie that are likely to be much older than the Cellar Master him or herself.

“It takes a century and four generations of Cellar Masters to create LOUIS XIII final blend. As a family, we do not take being custodians of such a precious brand for granted,” says MarieAmélie de Leusse, chairperson of Rémy Cointreau and greatgranddaughter of one of the founders of the of the House. She recently visited South Africa and spoke to YourLuxury Africa about being the custodian of the cognac brand that defies time.

HEADING UP RÉMY COINTREAU, ONE OF FRANCE’S BESTKNOWN, FAMILY-OWNED SPIRIT PRODUCERS, IS ABOUT PROTECTING A LEGACY FOR GENERATIONS TO COME

WORDS JACQUIE MYBURGH CHEMALY

“I was about 20 years old when I tasted LOUIS XIII for the first time; my friends could not believe it. I was an only child and there simply had not been an occasion to open a precious decanter of LOUIS XIII for only three people,” recollects Marie-Amélie. So, one night, she enjoyed her first taste of LOUIS XIII with friends in Paris.

“It was beautiful, incredible, everything – and more – than I thought it would be. My memory is of the feeling, not the specific taste. It was so smooth, warming, and soft,” she recalls.

The nostalgia around LOUIS XIII is something that is quite important to Marie-Amélie’s family, and seven of them are currently working in the business. “My cousins and I all have the common goal of caretaking this business for future generations.” She believes they’ve been handed a treasure that has withstood the passage of time for generations before them, and their duty to continue the traditions for future generations. “In the case of LOUIS XIII, it really does take generations to make this product. It does not happen overnight; not even in one lifetime. Our

Cellar Master now is working with eaux de vie for LOUIS XIII in the future, but he will probably never see them through to fruition. And he has bottled some eaux de vie that were way older than him. We are the custodians of time.”

Marie-Amélie says this sense of responsibility does not only extend to her family, but to anyone who works for Rémy Cointreau. She says there are families who have worked for the company much longer than she has, and they do not hesitate to remind her of the traditions that need to be observed. Rémy Martin and LOUIS XIII have only ever had four Cellar Masters – and when these individuals leave, they select their own successor to whom they hand over the reins.

“LOUIS XIII is all about creating moments suspended in time. As long as we do this, we are going in the right direction”

LOUIS XIII is now 150 years old, and Marie-Amélie is confident it will still be around in another 150 years. “After all, some of the eaux de vie are already there and waiting. We have the vision to take it forward.”

And the fact that a younger generation is now starting to take an interest in the world of cognac bodes extremely well for this luxurious spirit, notes MarieAmélie. Cognac is so much more

versatile than what people traditionally thought, and younger people are less afraid to break the rules when it comes to enjoying something often perceived as untouchable. “They want to play with [the drink] and enjoy it. That is interesting for us because we believe one of the beauties of cognac is the fact that there are a lot of different facets that shine through because so many eaux de vies get assembled into the final product. So, each time you taste a drop, there is something different to discover.”

She said the launch of The Drop – 10ml of LOUIS XIII Cognac – was a move to accommodate a younger market and offer them the opportunity to “play” with the luxury spirit and to enjoy it on the move. “LOUIS XIII is all about creating moments suspended in time. As long as we do this, we are going in the right direction.” ■

an urgent OPTIMISM

THE EARTHSHOT PRIZE WAS HELD LAST MONTH FOR THE FIRST TIME IN AFRICA. WE CHATTED TO GLOBAL INFLUENCERS AND EXPERTS AT THE MOMENTOUS EVENT ABOUT THE ROLE OF LUXURY IN A SUSTAINABLE WORLD WORDS LEIGH HERRINGER

“You may just be my lucky charm,” smiles Kenyan technophile Francis Nderitu, one of the Earthshot Prize finalists I find myself sitting next to in the audience. It’s the day before the prestigious Earthshot Prize awards in Cape Town, and as I sit with Francis, I whisper to him that I hope he wins, and this is when he says the quip about me being a lucky charm. YourLuxury Africa has been invited to a series of panel discussions in the run-up to the event, and I chat with Francis about Keep IT Cool, his game-changing storage and cooling solution that minimises wastage of fish from boat to plate. Did you know that 200 million Africans depend on fish as their main source of income? It’s an extraordinary story of passion and innovation, and their achievements so far are both remarkable and humbling.

The room is buzzing as some of the world’s most influential people have gathered together to share their insights on the plight of our planet. These include the His Royal Highness Prince William, the 15 Earthshot finalists, Earthshot CEO Hannah Jones, Australian environmentalist Robert Irwin, South African actress and Earthshot global ambassador Nomzamo Mbatha, Kenyan environmentalist Wanjira Mathai, as well as ministers, foreign secretaries, scientists, entrepreneurs, investors, and global media.

Established in 2020 by Prince William through his Royal Foundation, The Earthshot Prize is an annual environmental award and platform designed to search the world for groundbreaking solutions to repair and regenerate the planet. The idea was inspired by JFK’s Moonshot challenge to land on the moon by the end of the 1960s. The late American President famously said in 1962 that ‘challenges need to be tackled not because they are easy but because they are hard’. Prince William took part in a panel later that afternoon and reiterated the goal to “turn the pessimism around environmental issues into hope and optimism, to champion inspiring narrative and leadership, and to invest in the youth” so we can course the trajectory towards a stable climate in which communities, oceans, and biodiversity can thrive together.

This year’s Earthshot spotlight on Africa has highlighted the continent’s many, many challenges, but it also showcased the abundance of resources and talent, as well as the deep motivation to do what it takes to try and fix it. “It’s time to change the narrative and use our platforms as gateways to sustainable luxury,” Nomzamo tells me. “Luxury sustainability in Africa is ethically sourced; it’s about accountability and craftsmanship, and it’s a conversation that’s continuing,” she adds. “The road to greening fashion using practices of demand and tradition – that is incredibly luxurious,” says Jackie May, founder and editor of Twyg magazine, “But we need coalitions in luxury and collaborations with the public sector to support these small, sustainable businesses.”

As the day’s focus points pivoted from fashion and food to technology and innovation, environmentalist Wanjira, who was named one of the world’s most influential women in BBC’s 2023 100 Women List, also spoke about Africa’s vibrant ecosystem, and that our choices now will echo across generations. She went on to say that true luxury is the balance between what’s local and what’s beautiful and that we need to find the stories behind them both, and then make ‘purpose popular’.

Known as the Oscars for the Environment, The Earthshot Prize has been previously held in London, Boston, and Singapore. This year, VIPs and guests in Cape Town were welcomed by a kaleidoscope of African colour and culture as Table Mountain – illuminated in green for the occasion – stood proudly over the Mother City.

Hosted by Emmy, Grammy, and Tony award-winner Billy Porter and our own media personality and entrepreneur Bonang Matheba, we were treated to an evening of storytelling and dynamic musical performances by international DJ Uncle Waffles, Grammy awardwinner Lebo M, Diamond Platnumz, and the amazing Ndlovu Youth Choir. Nina Dobrev were also there to present Earthshot awards, while Earthshot global ambassador Nomzamo Mbatha stood out in her Solar Citrine dress, which was dyed using engineered bacteria that grow and apply the pigment directly onto the fabric. Prince William aptly wore a vintage jacket and biodegradable sneakers as he walked the green carpet and delivered his keynote address to the world.

Since the awards, I’ve been trying to process the enormity of The Earthshot Prize, what it has achieved in such a short time, and the ambitious tasks that still lie ahead. Keep IT Cool went on to win in its category, but there’s no doubt in my mind that, while he may have called me his lucky charm, I am the lucky one to have met Francis that day. As Prince William said that evening, “Let their success inspire us to act with urgency and optimism, ensuring a thriving world for our future generations.” A call to action for us all. ■ earthshotprize.org

Liquidity, lifestyle &LEGACY

ACCORDING TO BARCLAYS BANK, THERE ARE THREE PRINCIPLES BEHIND A SUCCESSFUL WEALTH PHILOSOPHY: LIQUIDITY, LIFESTYLE, AND LEGACY. THEY PROVIDE AN EASY-TOUNDERSTAND STRUCTURE TO HELP NAVIGATE WEALTH MANAGEMENT AND ENSURE IT THRIVES IN AN EVERCHANGING WORLD

In today’s fast-paced and interconnected world, managing wealth effectively has become more complex than ever. For many ultrahigh-net-worth (UHNW) individuals, particularly across Africa, securing the financial future of families and businesses requires a strategic, thoughtful approach. The concept of a ‘wealth philosophy’ is emerging as the cornerstone of this strategy, offering a framework to help manage, preserve, and grow wealth across generations.

The rise of a new generation of affluent individuals across the African continent has led to a growing awareness of the importance of a sound, strategic approach to managing wealth. This is not just about securing one’s financial future, but also about leaving a stable legacy. As Amol Prabhu, CEO of South Africa and Market Head of Africa, observes, “African families are becoming increasingly global. It is now normal to have the patriarch or matriarch (who are often the wealth creators) in their home country, but for the children to be based elsewhere. Therefore, one needs to consider a holistic wealth philosophy.”

But why is this so important? Wealth does not remain static, and without proper planning, it can be lost or mismanaged. It’s a common adage that wealth goes through a cycle of “rags to riches to rags again,” illustrating how quickly wealth can be made and, just as quickly, lost. Typically, the first generation amasses the wealth, the second generation enjoys it, and the third generation finds the family fortune depleted.

For today’s super-rich Africans, the stakes are even greater, and the need for expert guidance is greater. Recent research indicates that the number of millionaires in Africa is expected to rise by 65 percent over the next decade. However, this growth comes with a significant challenge – global mobility. According to Henley & Partners 2024 Africa Wealth Report, between 2013 and 2023, nearly 20 000 millionaires left the continent.

The dynamic nature of wealth in Africa means that assets are not only created at a rapid pace, but they are also being redistributed across borders.

Furthermore, wealth is no longer just about accumulating money; it’s about managing it strategically across generations and geographies. With the rise of unpredictable events like divorce, political instability, and even conflict, the security of family wealth is often threatened. This means that now more than ever, individuals must have a clear wealth philosophy that ensures the longevity and sustainability of their assets.

A well-articulated wealth philosophy serves as the foundation of financial planning. It o ers peace of mind, helping individuals make informed decisions.

The 3Ls – Liquidity, Lifestyle, and Legacy –are concepts designed to help individuals allocate their assets in a way that aligns with their unique monetary values, goals, and aspirations.

THE 3LS: A SIMPLE FRAMEWORK FOR WEALTH PLANNING

The concept of the 3Ls is based on three fundamental “buckets” into which money and assets are allocated. Each bucket represents a di erent phase of wealth management, and understanding how to balance these is key to long-term financial success.

LIFESTYLE: THE MIDDLE ROAD

As one accumulates wealth, the focus shifts to Lifestyle. This bucket concerns medium-term needs – typically the next five to 10 years – and is where wealth holders begin to focus on preserving their assets, generating income, and maintaining purchasing power. It’s not enough to simply accumulate wealth; it’s equally important to plan how to grow and manage it.

For example, it takes into account the impact of inflation, a significant issue for wealth holders. In recent years, inflation has eroded the value of cash, and those sitting on large amounts of liquid assets may feel the e ects most acutely.

A skilled wealth manager will help clients make strategic investments, diversify their portfolios, and protect their wealth from inflation. This could involve real estate investments, equities, or other assets that can grow in value over time.

“African families are becoming increasingly global. It is now normal to have the patriarch or matriarch (who are often the wealth creators) in their home country, but for the children to be based elsewhere. Therefore, one needs to consider a holistic wealth philosophy”
– Amol Prabhu, CEO of South Africa and Market Head of Africa

LIQUIDITY: THE STARTING POINT

The first and most straightforward bucket is Liquidity, which is essentially about having enough cash or easily accessible assets to cover immediate or short-term needs. For wealthy individuals, this could include school or university fees, luxury purchases like holiday homes, and even debt repayments on multiple properties. Liquidity planning includes provisions for tax bills or unforeseen events, such as investment opportunities or unexpected life changes. Ultimately, liquidity ensures that one’s day-to-day financial obligations are covered.

This bucket is designed to cover expenses over the next five years, providing a safety net and o ering peace of mind.

But the Lifestyle bucket is not only about managing the wealth one already has; it’s also about defining and maintaining one’s desired lifestyle. This may include philanthropic goals, such as establishing foundations, donating to causes, or structuring giving plans in a way that allows for long-term impact.

LEGACY: THE LONG-TERM VISION

explains Eric Pinn, Managing Director and Head of UK Distribution at Barclays Private Bank and Wealth Management.

The final bucket, Legacy, represents the long-term future of wealth. This is often the most challenging part of wealth planning as it requires a vision that transcends one’s own lifetime. This bucket is about deciding how one’s wealth will be passed down to the next generation and how it can continue to grow beyond one’s own time.

“Many wealthy individuals initially focus on the accumulation of assets, but considering legacy early ensures wealth continues to thrive long after its creator has passed. A key part of this planning involves making decisions about business succession. This stage of wealth planning also addresses more personal matters, such as creating wills, trusts, and other mechanisms to ensure that assets are distributed according to one’s wishes,”

In the context of family dynamics, this planning brings di cult questions to the forefront. For example, what happens to wealth if a child divorces, or if a family member is not financially responsible? For families spread across multiple countries, Legacy planning also involves navigating cross-border legal and tax considerations. Wealth transfer between countries can be complicated as di erent jurisdictions have di erent laws and tax implications. A wellplanned strategy ensures that the wealth holder’s intentions are met and minimises the tax burden on beneficiaries.

Philanthropy also plays a significant role in the Legacy bucket. Wealth holders often want to leave a lasting mark on society, and thoughtful philanthropic planning allows them to direct wealth towards causes they care about.

FROM THEORY TO REALITY

While the concept of the 3Ls is easy to grasp, bringing it to life requires careful thought and planning. Each individual’s circumstances are unique, and so the

allocation of assets across the 3Ls will di er from one person to the next. For some, Liquidity will be the most important consideration, while for others, Legacy planning may take precedence.

The role of a skilled wealth manager is to help individuals navigate this complexity. They will work with clients to create tailored strategies that balance liquidity needs with the desire for longterm growth and legacy. These strategies involve a combination of asset classes and global markets, all designed to help wealth holders realise their personal goals while safeguarding their wealth.

For those African families who find themselves spread across continents, having a robust wealth philosophy is essential. By adopting the framework of Liquidity, Lifestyle, and Legacy, individuals will be able to navigate the complexities of wealth while building a sustainable future for themselves and their descendants.

With the right wealth philosophy, the future is bright, not just for the first generation of wealth creators, but for generations to come. ■

It’s an immutable fact that champagne is synonymous with celebration. Throughout its history, Moët & Chandon has introduced new ways to celebrate, being the first to christen ships with champagne and introducing the ritual of spraying it on the Formula 1 winner’s podium. It also invented the iconic champagne pyramid – a cascading tower of glasses that adds theatrical flair to any gathering – and today, Moët & Chandon captures the essence of joy, unity, and the timeless allure of shared experiences.

Founded in 1743 by Claude Moët, the Maison quickly became renowned for its exceptional champagne, earning a place in royal courts and prestigious events worldwide. Moët & Chandon’s Sibylle Scherer’s recent visit to South Africa marked the first time here in her role as CEO and President. To celebrate Champagne Day on 25 October, award-winning South African designer Thebe Magugu hosted a dinner – along with seven other African creatives in their respective countries, including Ghana’s Aisha Ayensu, Creative Director of Christie Brown, and photographer and content creator Lyra Aoko from Kenya – that was a celebration of art, craftsmanship, and savoir-faire.

Eight years after sitting down with its cellarmaster, Benoît Gouez, YourLuxury Africa’s managing editor Lerato Tshabalala shared a glass of champagne with Sibylle while discussing insights on Moët & Chandon’s legacy, the importance of cultural collaboration, and the Maison’s commitment to sustainability.

MOËT & CHANDON IS KNOWN FOR ITS LOVE OF CELEBRATIONS – LARGE AND SMALL. WHAT ROLE DOES THE BRAND PLAY IN FOSTERING THESE MOMENTS? Celebration is indeed at the heart of Moët & Chandon. We believe in elevating moments, whether big or small, into something truly special. Our champagne connects people on an emotional level, and that’s something I cherish. It’s about creating meaningful, authentic experiences that resonate deeply with customers.

WHAT DOES YOUR VISIT TO SOUTH AFRICA FOR CHAMPAGNE DAY MEAN FOR MOËT & CHANDON? Our brand has always been rooted in craftsmanship, and each bottle of champagne is the result of centuries-old techniques combined with modern creativity. The theme for the event, ‘Endless Creativity in Craftsmanship’, speaks to our commitment to blend tradition with innovation. This year, we wanted to honour African artistry, which is why partnering with Thebe Magugu was fitting. His designs – inspired by his family and his visit to Épernay – embody a fresh perspective on savoir-faire. His work reflects that fusion of tradition and modernity that we hold dear at Moët & Chandon. This balance is guided by our principle of the “15-minute lead,” a concept introduced by our leader, Robert-Jean de Vogüé. It reflects our commitment to staying ahead of the curve while honouring our heritage and connection to the land. This blend of old and new resonates particularly well here in South Africa, where tradition and modernity coexist so beautifully.

SUSTAINABILITY IS IMPORTANT TO YOUR BRAND. COULD YOU SHARE MORE ABOUT THE NATURA NOSTRA INITIATIVE? For us, sustainability isn’t just an initiative — it’s woven into our DNA. As the number one champagne brand globally, we recognise our responsibility to care for the land that has given us so much. Through our Natura Nostra programme, we’re working to restore and protect biodiversity by planting 100km of hedges and bushes throughout our vineyards. They serve as natural habitats for birds, insects, and other wildlife, helping to restore a balanced ecosystem that supports both the land and our grapes. By creating these natural corridors, we’re not only fostering a vibrant ecosystem, but also preventing soil erosion and improving water retention, which in turn enhances the quality of our grapes.

In addition to Natura Nostra, we have another project called Essentia, which I like to refer to as our “living library” of grape varieties. We’ve collected nearly 2 000 ancient grape varieties from the Champagne region, planting them in a dedicated area where we can observe how they respond to today’s climate challenges. By studying these historical varieties, we’re gaining insights that could help us adapt our vineyards to future conditions.

AS THE WORLD LEADER IN CHAMPAGNE, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO SHARE THIS KNOWLEDGE WITH THE INDUSTRY?

Sustainability at Moët & Chandon is also about sharing our knowledge with the wider Champagne community. We’ve always believed in generosity and

collaboration. In fact, Moët & Chandon played a pioneering role in the fight against phylloxera (a plague that damages the grapevine and eventually destroys the plant) in the late 19th century, developing solutions and sharing them with other vineyards to save the Champagne region. This resulted in the establishment of our Fort Chabrol Institute, the first practical school of viticulture. Today, that spirit of collaboration continues as we work with local communities, researchers, and environmental groups to find sustainable solutions for everyone in Champagne. We also believe that luxury must go hand-inhand with sustainability. Consumers are discerning; they care about how products are made and the impact they leave.

YOU COME FROM A LUXURY FASHION BACKGROUND. HOW HAS THIS EXPERIENCE INFLUENCED YOUR APPROACH TODAY?

I was the President of merchandising, consumer marketing and branding at DFS Group in Hong Kong, which taught me the importance of craftsmanship and the art of creating meaningful products. In fashion, as with champagne, authenticity and attention to detail are everything. Transitioning to Moët & Chandon was like coming full circle as I’ve always admired the Maison’s connection to nature, beautiful things, and the creative process behind each bottle.

MOËT & CHANDON RECENTLY HOSTED EIGHT AFRICAN CREATIVES IN ÉPERNAY. COULD YOU SHARE THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS COLLABORATION? The African market is special to us, and we wanted to create a cultural exchange that would honour both our heritage and African artistry. Bringing the creatives to Épernay allowed them to experience the heart of Moët & Chandon, and to understand the craftsmanship and dedication behind each bottle. Our partnerships with artists from Africa honour a shared philosophy, combining timeless craftsmanship with fresh, contemporary perspectives.

HOW DO YOU DEFINE LUXURY? Luxury today is about experiences rather than just physical possessions. It’s about craftsmanship, authenticity, and the story behind what you’re enjoying. For me, luxury is about creating memories and sharing special moments with others. Moët & Chandon is perfectly positioned in this respect, as champagne brings people together. It’s not just about drinking bubbles; it’s about the emotions and experiences that go with it. Sharing a glass of champagne with friends and loved ones is always a luxury I cherish. ■

Sun’s OUT, Top DOWN

AS THE SEASONS SHIFT, SO DO THE CARS THAT DEFINE THEM. CELEBRATE SUNNY SKIES AND THE FREEDOM OF THE ROAD – WIND BLOWING IN YOUR HAIR – WITH TWO NEW SUPER-LUXE CONVERTIBLES WORDS EDWARD MOLEKE MAKWANA

While winter calls for the warm rumble of powerful engines built to conquer the cold, summer belongs to convertibles – those magnificent cabriolets that capture the spirit of open-air freedom and sundrenched skies.

In 2025, two new luxury convertibles will make their debut on South African roads, both offering a exhilirating driving experience. Both convertibles embody more than just performance and luxury; they’re an invitation to embrace life’s finer moments, to drive not just to the destination, but for the journey itself. As South Africa’s scenic landscapes come alive in the summer sun, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ and Bentley Continental GT Convertible will take drivers on a joyride of beauty and adventure.

THE MERCEDES-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ CABRIOLET

Around mid-2024, I attended the launch of the Mercedes-Benz CLE Coupé in KwaZulu-Natal, an elegant harbinger of the CLE Cabriolet, which followed a few months later in Cape Town. Imagine cruising through the Western Cape’s Franschhoek Pass or Mpumalanga’s Long Tom Pass in this masterpiece – the AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Cabriolet is crafted for such scenic routes.

With the arrival of the AMG CLE models, Mercedes-AMG has set the stage for the CLE 53 4MATIC+ Cabriolet – a car that joins the legendary SL Roadster with its open-top exhilaration tailored for all seasons, especially summer.

Scheduled to hit South African roads in the first quarter of 2025, the Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 4MATIC+ Cabriolet comes packed with performance and comfort. Beneath its sculpted hood lies a 3.0-litre in-line sixcylinder engine with twin turbocharging, delivering 330kW of power and 560Nm of torque, with a temporary over-boost function pushing torque to 600Nm for added thrills. An integrated starter generator adds a brief 17kW and 205Nm, feeding the 48-volt electrical system. Paired with the AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission and AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive, this setup launches the cabriolet from 0 to 100km/h in 4.2 seconds.

sport-inspired elegance. Features like AirCap® and AirScarf® ensure comfort, while a suite of tech enhancements promises a driver-centric experience.

OPEN-AIR SUPERLUXURY: THE BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT CONVERTIBLE

“Both convertibles embody more than just performance”

In the latter half of 2024, Bentley Motors revealed the fourth-generation Continental GT Convertible, carrying forward the iconic legacy of the Continental GT family while pushing boundaries in craftsmanship, performance, and elegance. It’s an ultra-luxury hybrid masterpiece – perfect for leisurely drives and grand tours – with a fresh design aesthetic that channels the DNA of Bentley’s exclusive Bacalar and Batur models.

The Bentley Continental GT Convertible has an impressive 4.0-litre V8 engine with an electric motor, producing a staggering 575kW and 1 000Nm of torque. This hybrid powertrain provides thrilling acceleration, reaching 0-100km/h in 3.4 seconds, and offers an electric-only range of up to 81km. With emissions as low as 29g/km, the Bentley sets a new standard in eco-conscious luxury without sacrificing performance.

Its sleek exterior design introduces single headlamps, a nostalgic nod to Bentley models of the 1950s, marking the biggest revision of the Continental’s look in two decades. Inside, the cabin redefines opulence with cutting-edge wellness features, including air ionisation and innovative seat technologies for ultimate comfort. Bentley’s commitment to craftsmanship shines through with three-dimensional leather

Its bold design, from the wide, flared arches to the Monobloc-inspired alloy wheels, commands attention. Step inside, and you’re welcomed by an AMG-exclusive interior that exudes refined luxury with textures, dark chrome finishes and signature modern quilting.

THE ESSENCE OF OPEN-TOP DRIVING

These two convertibles are not merely cars; they’re crafted for dreamers who seek luxury in every breath of fresh air. From spirited drives across mountain passes to sunset cruises along the coast, 2025 promises to be a thrilling year for those who yearn for the wind in their hair and a sense of boundless adventure. ■

Wilderness Walking into the Soulof the

IN AN AGE

WHERE LUXURY IS

Imagine standing 15 metres from two male cheetahs feeding on a young oryx. Then circling back on foot through a thicket, heart racing, to view a black rhino – notorious for their aggressive behaviour – from a safer vantage point. Or sleeping under the stars with only a mosquito net separating you from the elements, hearing lions roar in the distance. How about lazing by a pool overlooking the Karoo landscape with an absence of electronics, thanks to a mostly Wi-Fi-free zone? It’s moments like these that make daily life and the constant grind fade into the background, and give one the opportunity to reflect and be reminded that we are just a speck in the universe’s ecosystem. The thought of being off-grid, sleeping in a tent and walking through the bush with only an armed guide and tracker between you and what lies ahead may not appeal to all. It may even seem contradictory to the notion of luxury travel. For others, going back-to-basics and the ability to switch off, unwind, and reset is the definition of luxury. This is exactly what you can expect from the Cheetah Trail at Samara Karoo Reserve, a place defined by its famous open plains and mountains, deep silence and a vast, almost surreal sky.

INCREASINGLY DEFINED BY LIFE-ENHANCING EXPERIENCES, THE SAMARA KAROO RESERVE CHEETAH TRAIL OFFERS A UNIQUE ESCAPE FOR ADVENTUROUS TRAVELLERS
WORDS INGRID WOOD

Samara has gained worldwide recognition for its successful efforts to reintroduce various species to their natural habitat and has had excellent results with its cheetah conservation programme. When they introduced cheetahs back into the region in 2004, it was the first time the cats had walked the land in 130 years. While you may encounter all game on the trail – including the Big Five, antelope, wildebeest, giraffe, and plains zebra – at the heart of this experience lies the thrill of tracking the spotted feline. Thanks to the conservation programmes, the cheetahs are habituated, which means they are still wild and there is no direct human contact, but it is safe to approach them on foot with a guide, keeping a respectful distance, of course. For this reason, Samara is widely regarded as one of the best places to view cheetah in the wild.

Slackpacking allows for much closer interaction with the environment, and being on foot offers a slower, more immersive and intentional way to experience it. While the trail is a walking journey and the natural rhythm of the land guides the pace, it doesn’t sacrifice comfort. The luxury tents at Plains Camp, where you spend nights one and three, have cosy beds, sheepskin throws, a fireplace, hot water bottles, and

heated bucket showers. There’s a deck with a lounger if you want to enjoy the solitude, while the main tent where meals are served has a pool, expansive deck, and a bar and lounge area. You travel light (water and snacks are provided), and your overnight bag is transported to the mobile fly camp ahead of you. Each day covers around 10 to 15 kilometres, so the trail is accessible for moderately fit guests, while still being physically rewarding. Walkers are led by seasoned guides and trackers who bring the landscape to life with their fascinating stories of wildlife encounters, educational sessions on the local fauna, flora, rock formations and conservation efforts, as well as entertaining anecdotes about Karoo life.

In a world that is increasingly cluttered and interconnected, there is something distinctly luxurious about endless space. At Samara, this space is more than a backdrop; it becomes the experience itself. And this is why the Cheetah Trail is so rewarding. It’s not merely a hike, but rather an opportunity to tap into a new wave of luxury that prioritises self-discovery, connection, and environmental awareness. Walking across the Karoo landscape, where the earth meets an endless sky, you realise that space and solitude are the new hallmarks of a sophisticated escape. ■
