NOÉ LIMITED EDITION Steinway & Sons have unveiled a stunning new grand, ‘The Steinway & Sons Noé Limited Edition’, which delivers a modern interpretation of the classic Steinway & Sons grand piano, created in collaboration with the multidisciplinary French designer, Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance. Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance - who has created many iconic designs including the egg-shaped pods in the restrooms at London’s Sketch, the Corvo chair for Bernhardt Design and the Manta desk for Ceccotti Collezioni - described the opportunity to design a piano for Steinway & Sons as ‘something a designer can dream about’. “I have long admired Steinway for its timeless design and artistic excellence. It was a dream to create a modern interpretation of this classic instrument and something that only happens once in a lifetime. Music, just like water, ebbs and flows, the constant flow of water erodes rocks on the shore over time drawing shapes and stretched shapes on their surface. I thought how curved traces of ink become notes on paper and how those notes become music that travels as if ripples in the air. The immateriality of sound, the fluidity of time and the resonance with space combined with these sensual lines were my inspiration”, says Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance.
steinway.co.uk
The result of the collaboration is a truly elegant, sculptural piece of art. In a departure from the classic Steinway & Sons grand piano - still handcrafted at the factory in Hamburg - the rim of the Noé Limited Edition features an unusual, beautiful ‘flowing’ shape, based on what Noé calls ‘emotional curves’; a celebration of light and sound inspired by the natural ebb and flow of music. The legs are a distinct round shape, perfectly matching the soft flow of the piano’s rim while the unusual lyra, made of metal, rounds off the beauty of the instrument. The designer carefully chose three radiant colours - white, red and blue - and added matching veneers to some parts of the pianos, creating stunning visual highlights: ivory white is combined with Figured Sycamore Wood; midnight blue with Blue Stained Mahogany wood; and a deep burgundy red with red stained Indian Apple wood. The cast iron plate as well as the fittings are crafted in a silver- or gold-coloured finish, complimenting the colour of each piano. The Steinway & Sons Noé Limited Edition is available as a concert grand D-274, limited to just 18 pianos worldwide and the model B-211, limited to 88 pianos worldwide. As with other editions, the Noé Limited Editions feature Steinway SPIRIO | r, the world’s finest high-resolution player piano capable of live performance capture and playback. Each passage of music is captured with every nuance from the artist’s performance directly from the instrument and saved in Steinway’s proprietary high-resolution format. The piece can then be played back on the SPIRIO | r, which accurately reproduces every note played by the artist - and is virtually indistinguishable from the original. steinway.co.uk

ULYSSE NARDIN
THE REVOLUTIONARY FREAK Continues to Challenge Fine Watchmaking
When it was introduced in 2001, the Freak did more than simply shift expectations of Ulysse Nardin watches: it created a new paradigm in Swiss fine watchmaking. Mechanical watches coming out of Switzerland at the time had hands that showed the time, a dial for them to sit on, and a crown set into the case flank to adjust them. But the Freak had none of these. With no dial, no hands and no crown, it re-set the industry’s mindset. Could unconventional watch design, backed by huge advances in mechanical movement creation, catch the eye of 21st century watch buyers? You bet it could. In the two decades since the Freak first appeared, it’s become a collector favourite, while maintaining its position as a cornerstone of high-end contemporary watchmaking. Further iterations have amped up the story, often by elevating technologies it pioneered, chiefly in the use of high-tech silicon the Freak’s technical capabilities, sometimes just for the thrill to mitigate the stresses placed on some of the watch’s moving of stretching its boundary-less aesthetic. It may have sat outside the Swiss watchmaking comfort zone back then, but where the Freak went, everyone else followed. Among them, and as its name suggests, the Freak One has remained the centre point for the collection. The Freak’s Freak. No dial. No hands. No crown. It epitomises the independent, free-spirited thinking that has always defined the Freak, and Ulysse Nardin. At Dubai Watch Week, Ulysse Nardin continued the Freak’s story with the Freak One Ops - as in “operations”, a khaki and black watch that convey an adventurous inspiration. As before, it’s backed by cutting-edge technology developed in Ulysse Nardin’s independent integrated manufacture, only now with a
casual look. The new piece measures 44mm in diameter and is cased in black DLC titanium, complemented by a khaki green palette that informs the special sunray-patterned barrel cover and the watch’s integrated rubber strap pairing. The material story continues in the bezel, which is made of Carbonium®, an innovative material with exceptional strengthto-lightness properties that’s produced using the same carbon fibres found in state-of-the-art aircraft wings and fuselages. In fact, Carbonium® is made using offcuts from the aircraft manufacturing process, reducing its environmental impact by 40 per cent compared to other carbon composites. The manufacturing technique is organic, meaning the marbled finish found in the Freak One Ops’ bezel is unique to each watch. Given the watch has no dial, the Freak One Ops’ calibre UN240 Manufacture movement is clearly visible, its flying carousel simultaneously relaying the minutes indication as it rotates on its own axis. Also on display are the oversized oscillator and balance spring, both in captivating blue silicon, recalling the existential role silicon has played in the Freak’s unconventional legacy. The movement is automatic and carries a weighty 90hour power reserve. There’s a choice of two integrated straps: one in black and khaki “ballistic” rubber, and an alternate two-tone rubber strap, also in black and khaki. Both have black DLC titanium and black ceramic folding clasps. The straps tell Ulysse Nardin’s environmental story, too. They’re made using 30 per cent recycled rubber from production waste. For over twenty years since it breathed into life, there’s still nothing quite like the Freak.

A NN I VE R SARY EDITIONS The limited anniversary editions that Nomos Glashütte produces in honour of Glashütte’s watchmaking tradition are legendary and usually sell out extremely quickly. Today, the watchmaking company is continuing the series with a timepiece that has been considered an icon for decades: 175 Tangente are now available in 18 kt rose gold. Sophisticated and suave, the elegant timepiece is now available in a limited edition in rose gold, celebrating the rich heritage of watchmaking that can be found in this famous German town. Tangente, the most famous mechanical wristwatch made in Glashütte, comes complete with a dial that is inspired by the original Tangente design. Back then, the steel-gray watch had a white dial with gray detailing; the new version likewise comes with a dial that is galvanically white silver-plated, but with a subseconds dial and minute markers in rose gold. Like Tangente always has been, this new dress watch is angular and straightforward. Unlike the original Tangente, however, the new one is powered by an automatic caliber: the extremely thin, in-house built neomatik movement DUW 3001. This caliber can be described as sophisticated too; it is slim, precise, and elegant, while the case - in a very classic diameter of 35 millimeters - is basically tailor-made for it. Limited to only 175 pieces worldwide, this new version of Tangente is sure to have a high collector’s value. It is available with selected retailers and at nomos-glashuette.com. nomos-glashuette.com

Maison Ruinart presents Dom Ruinart 2010, a champagne made from 100% chardonnay grapes from exceptional terroir. In 2010, Ruinart Maison decided to replace crown caps with cork for Dom Ruinart, enabling Ruinart to age these precious bottles on lees for longer. It took more than a decade to reach its full potential. More than ten years of supervised rest in the depths of the Maison’s chalk quarry cellars in Reims. Dom Ruinart’s chalk wrap offers a new interpretation of the second skin innovation, made without the use of plastic, the eco-packaging is 100% recyclable. Velvety soft to the touch like chalk, it transforms this exceptional bottle into a sculptural object. The gentle reliefs and crevices criss-cross, as if carved directly into chalky rock. It evokes the unbreakable link between Dom Ruinart and the chalk, from the growing of the vine on chalky soils, to the time when the vintage is aged in chalk cellars. It illustrates savoir-faire and respect for nature.

CHAMPAGNE
Celebrate the festive season with Vintage Champagne The festive season is here, and London’s streets are coming alive with the turning on of the Christmas lights and festive bustle. The end of the year marks a time for reflection, celebration and treating those nearest and dearest. In honour of this very special time of year, the Champagne Bureau UK wanted to highlight Vintage Champagne - a style that encapsulates the meaning of luxury and the perfect choice to toast the festive season and the New Year. Importantly, a Vintage Champagne is made solely from wines harvested that same year and does not therefore contain any reserve wines. These wines are known for being full of character and can be of any grape variety as they are produced when a harvest reveals a typicity worth preserving. Therefore, Champagne Vintage is perfect for gifting; not only is there a Vintage to suit all tastes, but the taste of the grape from which it was produced is elevated to an even greater extent. Producing a Champagne Vintage requires months of preparation and labour. The process begins almost immediately after the harvest ends, with vines being pruned in early October in order to ensure harmonious growth. Later, as Winter draws to
a close and Spring approaches, the vine’s non-fruitful shoots are removed. This allows for lifting, trellising and trimming to occur as the months go on, so that by mid-August, the grapes are ready to be harvested. Before you are able to purchase a Champagne vintage for your festive celebrations, the wine must undergo four to ten years of maturation to be classified as a Vintage. This allows their unique characteristics, such as their golden colour and fruity, floral and spicy aromas, to emerge. Once you have purchased your Vintage Champagne, it is of prime importance that it is stored and prepared correctly. Bottles should be stored at a temperature of between 10 and 15 degrees Celsius and protected from light. Around half an hour before you are ready to drink your Vintage Champagne, it should be placed in an ice bucket half filled with water and ice until it reaches a temperature of 8 to 10 degrees Celsius. Flutes have commonly been thought of as the crème de la crème, however, a tall, rounded, tulip-shaped glass is better to show off the aromas and fine bubbles of the Vintage Champagne – as well as looking beautiful amongst your festive tablescape.

YOUR PALATE
Of course, a glass of Vintage Champagne, of any style, can be enjoyed independently. However, as with any Champagne style, there is a range of foods that pair especially well. Duck served with a plum or berry sauce is one such example. At this time of year, we would choose to pair our Vintage Champagne with the main event, a golden Turkey served with a tart cranberry sauce. Alternatively, and if you are looking to serve a seafood centrepiece, a Vintage Blanc de Blancs, made exclusively of white grape varieties, and lobster is a showstopping combination. Whatever style or pairing you choose, a Champagne Vintage is sure to bring prestige, joy and a little bit of sparkle to your festive celebrations. A Vintage’s pronounced aromas and beautiful effervescence will make every special occasion a memorable one.

AZZURRA In prime position in the heart of Sloane Street, Azzurra is a new Italian seafood restaurant from Aqua Restaurant Group and international restaurateur David Yeo. Celebrating his ‘boat to table’ philosophy, using the very best of the UK's seafood, sourced sustainably from the waters of the British Isles, and prepared with Italian elegance and simplicity, Azzurra is the culmination of David's extensive travel through Italy over the years. Brought to life by acclaimed hospitality designer Robert Angell, in conjunction with David, guests to the light filled restaurant are greeted by the sight of a striking 16m bar with seating, running the length of the restaurant. The multi-use bar boasts a Raw Bar, filled with the freshest fish and seafood, a glowing cocktail bar where talented mixologists shake up an array of signature cocktails, and a pizza counter at the far end. With an outdoor terrace, English oak timber-topped tables, rich blue banquettes, a sculpture of netting from English fishing boats - a nod to Azzurra’s dedication to using British seafood - and even projections of shimmering water in the sunlight, Azzurra is a welcome addition to the neighbourhood. Open for brunch, lunch and dinner - with Italian pastries and gelato available in the afternoons, the kitchen is overseen by Azzurra’s Executive Chef, Andrea Mura, a Sardinian native. Menu highlights include the Crudo Bar with Scottish langoustine tartare with Amalfi lemon oil and smoked Anglesey salt; or red snapper with pear and Calabrian chilli. The signature seasonal seafood platter takes pride of place - featuring Welsh
lobster, Scottish langoustines, Sicilian red prawns, Cornish dressed crab, Colchester oysters and razor clams. On to primi and diners can opt for perfectly prepared and presented pasta plates such as spaghetti alla carbonara di scampi with lightly torched Scottish langoustines, tuna bottarga and lemon; Linguine alle vongole with clams, Calabrian chilli, lemon, parsley, homemade tomato pangrattato, finished with Giardini di Carlo IGP organic oil from Sicily; and risotto gamberi e zucchine with Sicilian red prawns crudo, zucchini anchovies ‘colatura’ pangrattato. Main dishes highlight the incredible selection of fish and seafood available from British waters; with catch of the day served steamed, grilled or Azzurra’s acqua pazza style; Milanese style Swordfish with wild rocket rosemary and lemon; or grilled Dover sole with salsa vergine. There's also a whole host of pizzas, created with minimal yeast to create a lighter, thinner dough. If there's space, and you may struggle, indulgent desserts include Montebianco with mandarin, almond and Italian meringue jam; or a selection of homemade gelato and sorbet with an element of tableside theatre seen as Azzurra’s tiramisu trolley winds its way between tables. For those celebrating a special occasion, a private dining space at the back of Azzurra features warm wooden walls and ceilings, roughly painted to evoke old fishing boats. The detail in both the interiors and dishes, allow Azzurra to stand out from the crowd making it a fantastic option when looking for somewhere to dine in the capital.

NOR M A Inspired by the food and culture of Sicily, with particular emphasis on the Moorish influences of the Island's cuisine, Norma is a modern dining location situated in the heart of Fitzrovia. Set across three floors of a townhouse on Charlotte Street, the first two floors are dedicated to the restaurant, while the top floor is a private dining space. The menus change regularly based on seasonality of produce. However, highlights you can expect include smoked stracciatella; wild boar ragu arancina with porcini cream; stone bass crudo with etna mandarin, dill, chilli, honey and crispy capers; prawn amatriciana spaghetti, guanciale and parsley; and Cornish crab linguine. The 'Norma' Aubergine parmigiana is wonderfully hearty and warming - making it perfect for the colder months. While the pan-seared hake with lardo di nebrodi, spiced salsify, clams and chervil is a flavour-packed, lighter alternative to some of the festive fare all around the capital right now. That's not to say you can't enjoy some roasted brussels sprouts with smoked pancetta and fontina though!
With plenty of vegetarian and vegan options, as well as meat and fish, Norma offers something for everyone. The welcoming staff, interiors and cosy ambience only adds to the appeal making this a true neighbourhood location. In January 2024, Norma is welcoming Max La Manna into the kitchen to bring a whole host of plant-based, Sicilian inspired dishes that celebrate sustainable and low waste dining. Max is a multi-award winning author, chef and low waste advocate so his new menu in collaboration with Norma is not to be missed.

L U X U R I O U S LY B E S P O K E Bentley has offered various customisable options on its cars for many years, but now, the Mulliner team are on hand to create a truly bespoke vehicle to suit your every desire, whether you choose one of their pre-designed offerings or something truly unique.
BENTLEY MULLINER
At the very heart of the Bentley brand is a desire to push the boundaries, whether that be in performance or design, and it has been a part of the business from the very origins of automotive manufacture with Mulliner who operate today as Bentley’s personal commissioning division. Mulliner boasts almost 500 years of craftsmanship experience and heritage dating back to the 1500's starting life creating luxurious horse-drawn carriages. It wasn't until 1923 that Mulliner set its sights on the automotive world however, exhibiting a coachbuilt two-seater, 3.0-litre on a Bentley chassis at the Olympia Show, a mere fours years after Bentley Motors was founded.
From there the relationship blossomed, most notably with the creation of one of the most iconic Bentley's to date - the R-Type Continental - which came in 1952 and later went on to inspire the design of the modern Continental GT which brought the brand back from the brink. Following this successful relationship, Mulliner went on to officially become part of Bentley Motors in 1959, setting up its workshopd in Crewe which remains the home of Bentley today. The company has always maintained Mulliner's exclusivity and in 2020 announced that Mulliner would establish three distinct portfolios - Collections, Classic and of course, Coachbuilt. This

new structure allows customers to enjoy everything that Mulliner has to offer in the fashion that suits them. Collections allows you to indulge in the craftsmenship Mulliner affords with distinctly unique features such as intricate quilting on the seats and customised features on the exterior, all available as pre-curated options when purchasing your Bentley. Varying cars are released by Mulliner under their Collections portfolio across production models and limited series vehicles - such as the Le Mans Collection - each featuring the Mulliner trademark quality. A host of Mulliner exclusive paints and veneers are also available to transform your Bentley from the 'run of the
mill' so to speak to the luxuriously personalised without delving too far into pandora's box. Should you wish to venture a little further down the rabbit hole however, then the coachbuilt option is the one for you. Delivering an unfathomable plethora of options for your Bentley - and even the potential to create something entirely unique to you, should your budget allow - the Mulliner team are on hand to help you create your perfect car. From the moment your conversations start with the team, they will build a profile around your every action and word that might indicate a certain need or desire for something specific to feature in

or on your new car. This could be from the simplest alteration such as embroidered headrests with a family crest or business logo, to fundamental changes to areas of the vehicle such as a bespoke boot feature for weekend picnicking or a specific material to feature in the car which will need to undertake extensive research and testing before getting the approval necessary to be used. Despite the almost limitless options, there are still unfortunately parameters that need to be met from both a safety and sheer engineering perspective. The team at Mulliner will do everything in their power to make your automotive dreams come true, but if the physics don't allow for example, there may be no choice. Pushing the boundaries however is something Mulliner are all too familiar with and continue to do so today. The latest triumphs from the Coachbuilt stable - Bacalar and Batur - are truly exceptional machines. Transforming all perspective of what you expect a Bentley to be, these machines deliver an aesthetic that is unmistakeably Bentley, yet appears to have arrived from a future catalogue. When you remember that everything has been crafted by hand, the shapes and fluidity of these cars becomes all the more incredible. And style isn't the only thing that's different. Batur boasts the same iconic 6.0-litre, twin-turbocharged
W12 engine, but in its most potent guise ever - offering in the region of 740PS - this is swift beyond measure. Not just because of the lightning acceleration, but the fact that this car remains so refined despite a much lighter feel on the road than any and all other Bentley's. As luxurious and comfortable as the most finely appointed Flying Spur, yet ferociously quick and agile at the push of a button, there is a reason it packs a hefty pricetag well in excess of £1m. The level of quality in every aspect of this car is unrivalled. From aesthetics - which can obviously be fully customised to your taste - to performance which is above and beyond the realms of any previous production Bentley to grace the road. They do say that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and aesthetics is undoubtedly a contentious subject. Some might say that Batur is not for them, they may prefer something a little more traditional, classic even. Fortunately, the third portfolio that Mulliner offer is one that sees the return of some of the greats. Modern reimagining of classic Bentley's reconstructed in as close a fashion as the originals were once created, this celebration of automotive history is reserved for the most discerning of Bentley customer. Igniting the portfolio was the Mulliner Blower bentleymotors.com
YOUR DRIVE Continuation Series which saw the iconic Bentley Blower brought to life for 12 lucky owners with the team making almost every part from scratch, in many cases using the original 1920s moulds and tooling jigs, to ensure they matched those in the original car exactly. Now, the Classic portfolio has set its sights on the legendary Bentley Speed Six that dominated Le Mans in the 1920's. Again, sympathetically recreated to ensure as close an experience to the original as possible for 12 lucky owners. Two cars have been used as reference points for the Speed Six Continuation Series. ‘Old Number 3’ was the third of the three Speed Sixes entered into Le Mans in 1930. It has been immaculately preserved and is still raced by its owner. And Bentley’s own Speed Six (GU409) which is a 1929 sympathetically restored road car built to the original racing specification which has provided benchmark performance and handling data for the continuation cars, with a full power and torque curve for the 12 new engines to match. These are as close as can be to the original and set the standard for collectible classic production. But with such limited numbers all of which accounted for in this instance - you need to be as quick off the mark as Batur if you want any chance of getting your hands on the next recreation that Mulliner Classic unveil...and who knows when that might be.

1968 Daimler V8 250 Saloon £POA
Distinguished Daimler The elegant Daimler V8 250 four-door saloon was produced by The Daimler Company Limited from 1962 to 1969 and was the first to be based on a Jaguar platform and last to boast a Daimler engine following the purchase of the company from the Birmingham Small Arms Company by Jaguar Cars in 1960. Its engine is the hemispherical head V8 designed by Edward Turner - which was first used in the Daimler SP250 sports car -
that received some updates along with the facelift in 1967. A name change from the 2.5 V8 saloon to the V8-250 brought with it an alternator instead of a dynamo and twin air cleaners - one for each carburettor. This update also saw some parts including the slimline bumpers sharing a place with the Jaguar counterparts which received a name change at the same time. Additional new features included a padded instrument panel, padded door cappings and ventilated leather upholstery finished here in a striking red - along with a recline-able split-bench front seat and heated rear window. This example also boasts the optional power steering. Finished in Woodcote Green metallic coachwork with that vibrant red leather interior, this 1968 example is a car to be noticed, especially with its wooden veneer interior and full length Webasto mohair soft top. It is a matching numbers car that shows 96,000 miles from new with an extensive service file, Jaguar manual, full tool kit, spare wheel jack and wheel brace. A car for any discerning driver, perfect for a drive in the country to your favourite picnic spot with the roof open and fresh air through your hair.

SAVILLS
HOUSE PRICE FALLS PAST 'PEAK PAIN' with Frances McDonald, Savills Research Analyst
After a rollercoaster twelve months, the UK’s housing market is past ‘peak pain’ and looks set to bottom out in mid-2024, according to Savills latest 5-year house price forecasts. Frances McDonald, director of research at Savills, details how prime central London is the only market projected to see values level off in 2024, with 3.5% price growth expected in 2025, rising to 6.0% in 2026 as the global economy picks up and any domestic political uncertainty surrounding the next general election dissipates. Growth is expected to total 18.7% over the next five years. “Prime Central London (PCL) is expected to outperform most other UK residential markets over the next five years. Property prices remain -19% below historic peaks in central London, although the prospect of a general election is expected to push out the timing of a recovery. The market here is far less reliant on mortgage debt and there is still relative value on offer to a range of wealthy domestic and international buyers. Based on the £4.7 million average value in the Savills PCL index, the average prime central London property could see a gain of £800,000 over the forecast period.”
Cash and equity rich buyers continue to underpin activity “Cash and equity rich buyers - synonymous with prime markets - have remained the most resilient buyer group over the past year, with transactions remaining 3.5% higher than the 2017-19 average. While interest rates and borrowing relative to incomes remain high there is expected to be a divergence in performance between locations with the highest concentration of equity, with the prime markets expected to begin to recover from mid-2024 and see positive price growth from 2025.”

YOUR PROPERTY Prime central London - unique set of drivers “Nowhere is the equity vs cash distinction more pronounced than in the rarefied market of prime central London, where only 23% of buyers have relied on borrowing so far this year. “Underlying demand is expected to be driven by global wealth generation. The number of ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs), a key buyer group for central London homes, is expected to rise by 53% over the next five years, according to UBS, expanding top-end London’s potential buyer base. “This high value market has seen the smallest fall in values in 2023, and is the only market not forecast to experience a dip in values in 2024. With values still well below historic peaks, prime central London represents a ‘buy’. Recovery looks well overdue though at around 19%, we expect it to be much less aggressive than in previous cycles given a higher tax environment and greater scrutiny of sources of buyer wealth.”

BROKEN-PLAN DESIGN
REDEFINING OPEN-PLAN SPACES with BROKEN-PLAN DESIGN CONCEPTS with Julia Kendell from Kendell + Co. Julia is an interior designer for the London Homebuilding & Renovating Show sharing her expert tips and ideas to help you create your dream interior.
A departure from conventional open-plan layouts, ‘broken-plan’ has become the new buzz-word in interior design to overcome some of the negative aspects of open-plan living. This trend is redefining spatial dynamics, re-introducing privacy, functionality and visual interest within a large room. The appeal of an open-plan layout has long been associated with a sense of social connection providing family and friends with space to work and play together and allowing a seamless flow and interaction between various living areas. However, as the
demands of modern living evolve, think home-working and more entertaining at home, so too does the need for adaptable spaces that cater to a variety of activities. When making a large initial investment in your property, it makes sense to consider potential issues up to 15 years on to ensure maximum flexibility and value. Bridging the gap between the traditional compartmentalised layout and the liberating expanse of open-plan living, at the heart of the concept lies the clever use of built-in furniture, glazed partitions, and architectural features to delineate spaces without

YOUR INTERIOR
sacrificing the airiness and natural light characteristic of open-plan living. Floor-to-ceiling open-backed bookcases, for instance, serve as elegant dividers, offering vertical interest while maintaining visual connectivity. These not only provide storage opportunities and shelves for showcasing ornaments, but also define zones, without closing the area down and can be easily added to an existing room. Integrating glazed steel-framed screens ,such as Crittal, are a perfect way to minimise noise travel through a space and add architectural interest. They allow light to filter through while establishing distinct zones, whether it's a private reading area, a cosy home office, or an intimate dining area. Using reeded glass will improve privacy without detracting from the light levels and feeling of spaciousness. At the planning stage prior to constructing an extension or new open-plan area, its possible to incorporate structural ideas to best effect. Sliding doors offer another versatile solution to creating a broken-plan layout. When constructed as a pocket door, they can be almost entirely invisible or closed fully to separate areas. These are particularly useful for future-proofing to ensure maximum flexibility or to enable areas that can be separated off for homeworking or noisy teenagers when necessary. Half-height walls present yet another ingenious way to delineate space within a larger area offering a degree of separation between distinct functional areas. These walls serve as visual dividers, defining zones for different purposes and provide somewhere to position sofas against for a cosier feel.
A double-sided fireplace in the centre of the space, often between the sitting and dining areas, is a trusted go-to for designers to ensure the characterless and cold ‘airport lounge’ feel of many modern open-plan spaces is avoided. A change in floor level can be a subtle yet impactful technique in creating a broken-plan look. A sunken seating area or a raised platform for a dining space adds depth and interest to the overall design. This change in elevation not only defines specific areas but also adds a sense of drama to the interior. Similarly, a raised coffered ceiling above a sitting area or dining table breaks up the monotony of a single large expanse of ceiling. The addition of dimmable, perimeter lighting can be used to draw the eye to the coffered area and a central, decorative pendant creates the relationship with the furniture beneath. For those wanting an instant solution to their open-plan issues, tall indoor plants are a very effective way to add texture and separation. Bringing a natural element to the space, they also improve air quality, help with the acoustics and create a sense of relaxation and well-being in the home. And that, after all, is what good interior design should set out to accomplish.
