Somerset House’s Bamboo Garden Set in contrast to the urban landscape of Somerset House and central London, Somerset House’s new courtyard commission by artist Zheng Bo invites visitors to temporarily disconnect from their fast-paced, hyper-connected culture by immersing themselves in a magical bamboo garden. Created using 300 locally sourced bamboos, visitors to the garden are encouraged to select from ten different species of bamboo arranged in alcoves with seating and spend time sketching the unique characteristics of individual leaves on biodegradable paper, which will then be composted into the soil to fertilise the garden - completing a cycle of creativity and ecology. Zheng’s commission, as with their overall practice, is informed by eco-queer thinking, which takes a non-binary perspective, redistributing the power that humans are usually assumed to have over nature. Such an approach asks what we can learn from the natural world when we take the time to cultivate deeper and more intimate connections with it. The artwork’s title Bamboo as Method 格竹 pays homage to the Ming Dynasty thinker and scholar, Wang Yangming. Wang’s pursuit of enlightenment through the practice of gewu zhizhi (the acquisition of knowledge through the investigation of the nature of things) is encapsulated in Zheng Bo’s profound reference. The commission will run from 22 February - 28 April 2024. somersethouse.org.uk

BELL & ROSS

ARTLINE DRAGON According to Chinese astrology, those born under the Dragon have a character that is active, strong-willed, confident, enterprising and lucky. The new BR 05 Artline Dragon watch takes on this bold personality, with exclusive laser engraving reminiscent of a tattoo. While the Maison has built its reputation on producing efficient instrument watches designed for professionals, Bell & Ross has never held back from giving free rein to creativity. This is the BR 05 Artline’s mission: a unique variation within the BR 05 line allowing for a freer range of artistic expression. Now, Bell & Ross is going further. Part of the Maison’s philosophy is pushing one’s limits. The BR 05 Artline Dragon moves into a whole new field by adopting graphic codes linked to the art of tattooing. Playing on light and shadow through the relative fineness and thickness of each stroke, this line work is crucial to transcending the realm of drawing to that of a metal tattoo. The dragon is more than a mythical creature; it is a major cultural and spiritual reference. It evokes power because it actively participates in the world’s equilibrium. Bringing rain for the crops, the dragon is an omen of life. To create the motif on the new BR 05 Artline Dragon watch, Bell & Ross has invoked highly symbolic natural elements, such as the sun and moon, as well as references to flora and fauna, as with the swallow motif. In popular culture, the dragon is the marker of strong, courageous, powerful individuals, but it also symbolises benevolence, prosperity and luck. The dragons of Asian mythologies bring good news. For artists, the dragon motif is a tireless source of inspiration with endless variations, from the most figurative to the most refined. Dragons are thought to be an amalgamation of many animals, with their snake like bodies, deer antlers and eagle claws, not to mention their carp scales and eyes of a demon. The graphic designer’s work meets that of the watchmakers to create a harmonious motif across the entire watch, with engraving on its different surfaces.

The BR 05 Artline Dragon still features the collection’s principle of a bezel with rounded corners, attached to the case by four screws. It was also necessary to work around the readability of the watch’s time indications: another sign of boldness on this avantgarde timepiece. On the BR 05 Artline Dragon’s dial and integrated bracelet, the decorative motif is finely engraved. The ancestral technique of engraving has been practised in China for more than a millennium. In watchmaking, engraving is traditionally considered the first non-functional enrichment of a timepiece. With its new BR 05 Artline Dragon, Bell & Ross pays homage to Chinese culture and its art of engraving, while pushing its mastery of watchmaking techniques a little further. To produce the BR 05 Artline Dragon’s case and links on the integrated bracelet, an exceptional laser engraving technique is used. For the bracelet, this means engraving each link individually before assembly. There is no room for error: perfect precision is required to make sure the pattern is not distorted. Each link is a feat in itself, with continuity of design ensured from one component to the next. Ever faithful to the desire for technical excellence, which is the guiding principle behind the development of all Bell & Ross watchmaking instruments, the BR 05 Dragon features a BR-CAL.321 self-winding mechanical movement. It has a 54hour power reserve, ensuring not only advanced chronometric precision, but also great ease of use for active lifestyles. The hour graduation is subtly positioned at the level of the flange so as not to compromise the design. Designed to celebrate the strong symbolism of the Chinese dragon on the advent of this new year, the BR 05 Artline Dragon is deliberately created as a rare piece - not only because of its character, but also the complexity of its design. This exceptional timepiece will only be produced in a limited edition of 99 pieces. The BR 05 Artline Dragon is on sale exclusively in Bell & Ross boutiques and e-boutiques. bellross.com

ARNOLD & SON

DRAGON IN MOONLIGHT According to the traditional Chinese calendar, 2024 is a prosperous and harmonious year. Arnold & Son is marking it with a sculptural flying dragon on a dial where the artistic crafts converge. Fine watchmaking, sculpture and miniature painting compose the two versions of Perpetual Moon 41.5 Red Gold “Year of the Dragon”. This limited edition comprising of just eight pieces features an encounter between a rose gold dragon and a mother-of-pearl moon. The year of the Wooden Dragon starts on 10 February 2024. The dragon in this element is a harbinger of calm determination; the creature’s natural ardour is tempered by the wood. A year of questioning and control, it is also all about negotiation and generosity. These attributes coalesce to make this an eagerlyawaited year, duly celebrated by this beautiful interpretation. There are two versions, each with eight pieces produced, with a large, panoramic moon illuminating a nocturnal garden setting and a sinuous rose gold dragon. The backdrop to this scene is made from aventurine. Black or blue, the glass sparkling with metallic powder gives it a star-studded air. This is a calm union, in line with the subtleties of the Wooden Dragon. In the background stand a few stone pines with gnarled branches evoking the dragon’s shape. This dragon, positioned with its profile against the aventurine glass, is a supremely delicate sculpture with countless hand-crafted

details. With powerful feet, dissuasive claws, open maw and whiskers flowing in the wind, this majestic creature drifts between two worlds. Depicted realistically with hand-painted shadows, the large, mother-of-pearl moon is overlaid with Super-LumiNova. It is placed against an aventurine glass sky and surrounded by the constellations of the Great Bear and Cassiopeia, which are also hand-painted and overlaid with luminescent material The choice of these star patterns is a direct allusion to the history of marine chronometer-maker John Arnold. They have served as guiding lights since the dawn of time. In the middle distance lies the pole star, which unerringly indicates the north. Here, the importance of stars in determining periods, thresholds and symbols in the Chinese zodiac calendar constitutes a unique point of cultural and graphic convergence. On the case back, a secondary display of the phases of the moon allows fast and accurate adjustment of the moon age. The manually-wound A&S1512 calibre that powers the Perpetual Moon 41.5 Red Gold “Year of the Dragon” is able to track the phases of the moon with exceptional accuracy. The total duration of a lunar cycle is 29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds. Arnold & Son has approached this so closely that it would take 122 years for this movement, if constantly wound up, to accumulate a 24-hour discrepancy between the display and astronomical reality.

EXCALIBUR DRAGON Celebrating the arrive of the Lunar New Year, Roger Dubuis ignites its tourbillon craftsmanship once more, delivering a bold flourish of creativity inspired by the Year of the Dragon. This legendary sign of the zodiac places strength in the ascendance and transforms time into an era of great power so what better moment to introduce the Excalibur Dragon Monotourbillon. Just as the dragon is believed to rule the motions of water, Roger Dubuis has unleashed its own waves of watchmaking innovation, delivered through a design of emblematic freedom. From the aesthetics to the performance, this is a timepiece where expression takes over, and where the Maison’s unrestrained spirit is beautifully brought to life. While the previous Excalibur Dragon released in 2020

integrated manufacture. All of the watchmakers and designers must work in perfect alignment, playing to each other’s strengths while understanding each other’s needs. It’s a balance of technical prowess and aesthetic excellence that requires coordinated teamwork in every detail. Secondly, skeletonization also requires more time. To reduce the material inside the calibre, more hours of milling are needed, and more facetted surfaces are therefore produced, leading to even more hours for decoration. All this to give the watch its pure and uncluttered display and to give the designers more freedom to play with the watch’s aesthetics. Finally, it is fascinating to note that Roger Dubuis only makes Flying Tourbillons. Unlike traditional versions, the

delivered a true resemblance of the dragon’s mythical form, this new Monotourbillon takes a more abstract approach. With its usual commitment to excellence, Roger Dubuis has skilfully crafted the dragon using 27 individual pieces of brass each embellished with black lacquer on the sides and a pink gold treatment on the polished top surface. In typically inventive style, the pieces are set on 25 different levels, producing a 3D vision that is full of volume and vitality. Turn the watch over and the same flowing dragon appears - this time metallised on the inside of the caseback’s sapphire crystal. Precisely matching the view from the front, this stunning addition gives the dragon full power, no matter which side you are looking from. While the dragon reigns supreme in the aesthetics of this timepiece, Roger Dubuis has coupled the design with the authority of its Monotourbillon Calibre RD512SQ. Invented in 1801 to compensate the effects of gravitational force, the expression of horological art, with only a few skilled craftsmen able to build it. Still today, it remains one of the most complex challenges in watchmaking, it is a true intricate cage, containing the balance, spring, and escapement all inside. As you might expect, Roger Dubuis has approached this famous mechanism in its own unique way - by displaying its signature monotourbillon within a skeletonized movement. Naturally, this makes the craftsmanship far more difficult to achieve, and requires dedicated skills that the Maison has sublimely mastered. Even the way that Roger Dubuis makes skeletonized movements is more complicated than most. Since 2008, the Maison has been reinventing the craft by using skeletonization as a starting point of each design - rather than a consequence of it. This means even when carrying high complications like the tourbillon, the calibres are noticeable for their lightness and purity. Reaching that result demands harmony across the entire

Flying Tourbillon is only mounted on one side, with no supporting bridge on top. Again, more beautiful to look at, yet more difficult to create, because stability must be guaranteed. A challenge that the Geneva watchmaker has successfully achieved through a high-performing Flying Tourbillon built from 63 components. The ultimate reward for this dynamic skeletonized approach is the Poinçon de Genève certification, one of the most demanding signatures in fine watchmaking. Along with provenance and reliability, it sets the benchmark for quality craftsmanship, whereby every component of the watch must be hand-decorated to the highest standard. In the RD512SQ Calibre, this philosophy of flawless and tourbillon unique design can be seen across the sandblasted top surfaces, applied next to expertly polished angles. To master the forces surrounding the watch, the RD512SQ Calibre includes a lower tourbillon cage in non-magnetic titanium – twice lighter than stainless steel. Going even further, the upper tourbillon cage is produced in mirror-polished Cobalt Chrome – also non-magnetic – which enables the weight of the tourbillon to be reduced by 16%. As a result, the calibre shows a greater resistance to magnetic fields, while the power reserve is radically optimised to 72 hours. Sitting on the wrist, the 42 mm case of the watch is built from pink gold and is mounted with a robust brass flange, which itself has been given a pink gold galvanic treatment, along with indexes filled with black Super-LumiNovaTM. For the black calf-skin leather strap, personal style is set free thanks to the versatile quick release system, which enables the strap to be switched in seconds. Limited to just 28 pieces, the Excalibur Dragon Monotourbillon is Roger Dubuis’ powerful and unrivalled tribute to this auspicious occasion. It delivers an elaborate and inspiring vision of the mighty dragon, while furnishing the wearer with the finest example of modern tourbillon design.

ULYSSE NARDIN

BLAST TOURBILLON

DELVES INTO CHINESE CULTURE Since its debut in 2020, the Blast Tourbillon has established itself as the symbol of Ulysse Nardin’s unconventional knowhow and design. With its angular, disruptive style, high-tech movement and iconic X structure, it emblemises Ulysse Nardin’s visionary spirit. To mark the Lunar New Year, this innovative edgy creation has been entwined with the ancient magic of Chinese folklore, where the majestic Dragon meets the alluring Pearl. These revered creatures are frequently associated with pearls, which represent purity, wisdom and wealth. When these two symbols come together, as in countless tales, they signify a harmonious blend of power, providence and prosperity. These traditional representations show a dragon symbolically guarding a magical pearl. So it is with the new Blast Tourbillon Dragon: the dazzling mythical creature, hand-sculpted in 5N rose gold, coils its way around and through the skeletonised X structure, as though slithering out from within the movement itself. Before it, protected between its five-clawed hands, the mythical pearl sits in prime position atop the cage of the flying tourbillon. The choice of five claws is not incidental either. Associated with Imperial dynasties, five-clawed dragons are traditionally seen as to signify the highest prestige. In 2012, during the last Year of the Dragon, Ulysse Nardin presented the immaculate 88-piece limited edition, the Classico Enamel Champlevé Dragon, featuring a beautiful dragon artwork in enamel, a decorative art mastered by a handful of craftsmen and perpetuated by Ulysse Nardin. Fast forward to 2024, and this creature has exploded dramatically into life in three-dimensional form. The creation of a 3D dragon appearing to slide its way beneath the watch’s hands and in between the plains of the gear train and the X structure presented significant challenges. Over a two-year development process, this has included designing this unique dial and making bespoke adjustments to the design of the Blast Tourbillon case, bezel, and glass-box crystal to accommodate this unique creation.

The rose gold dragon, engraved and micro-painted entirely by hand, is a testament to elite artistry and skill, demanding four days of craftsmanship - three days for the engraving, and one for the painstaking application of gradated shades of red, orange and yellow. Every 3D aspect is modelled and rendered with utmost precision, from the scales of its rippling tail to its gleaming whiskers and the individual details of its claws. Worlds collide as this fantastical creature wraps itself around a masterpiece of high-tech, avant-garde horology: the Ulysse Nardin Blast Tourbillon. Audaciously structured behind the dragon and the skeletonized dial, the Blast Tourbillon’s manufacture movement, Calibre UN-172, is as unorthodox as it is ingenious. Ulysse Nardin’s first skeleton tourbillon calibre with automatic winding launched in 2020, it features a platinum micro-rotor visible at 12 o’clock, a tiny but miraculous device that delivers up to three days of power reserve. As ever with Ulysse Nardin’s most advanced timepieces, the flying tourbillon at 6 o’clock benefits from the Maison’s pioneering expertise in silicon fabrication. Introduced for the first time in 2001 with the revolutionary Freak, this material used for the escapement wheel, pallet fork, and balance spring adds further performance and resistance benefits. The movement and case are unified in both concept and construction - strikingly architectural, relentlessly modernistic, and emblematic of the independent Manufacture’s enduring mission to rethink and reinvent haute horlogerie. The rose gold upper case, with its angular facets and its opulent variations in satin-brushed and polished finishes, is paired with a bezel and case middle in DLC-blackened titanium, all mounted on an integrated black alligator strap with a 5N rose gold and black PVD titanium folding clasp. For those who seek the extraordinary and the daring, the Ulysse Nardin Blast Tourbillon Dragon is an embodiment of inhouse innovations, métiers d’art and the magic of the Year of the Dragon. Fusing ancient mythology and cutting-edge horology.

JAEGER-LECOULTRE

M A S T E R U LT R A T H I N Jaeger-LeCoultre haș reinterpreted the Master Ultra Thin Power Reserve with the Calibre 938, providing a 70-hour Power Reserve. The Master Ultra Thin collection epitomises JaegerLeCoultre’s philosophy of watchmaking, uniting timeless beauty with mechanical virtuosity to create the quintessential dress watch for the modern aesthete. In 2023, the collection is enriched by a new interpretation of the Master Ultra Thin Power Reserve, featuring a subtly modernised case and dial design, a new gradient midnight blue sunray dial, and a significantly increased power reserve. In line with La Grande Maison’s pursuit of timekeeping precision, together with added utility for the user, the Manufacture constantly improves its in-house calibres in line with advancing technology. Calibre 938 has been significantly revised to power a new generation of timepieces. Most notably, the power reserve has been increased to 70 hours – long enough to leave the watch aside for an entire weekend and wear it again on Monday with no need to rewind it or reset the time.

This significant gain in power reserve has been achieved without adding to the size of the calibre, which remains 4.9mm thick. The mainspring barrel was redesigned, some key components are now made of silicon, which makes energy transmission smoother by reducing friction of the moving parts, and other minor changes have been made to bring greater reliability. The power reserve function is a signature complication of Jaeger-LeCoultre, pioneered by the Manufacture in 1948 with the introduction of Calibre 481. The Powermatic, recognised by its distinctive red-and-white indicator, was the world’s first self-winding timepiece with a power reserve gauge and quickly became a key model for the Manufacture in the early 1950s. The Master Ultra Thin Power Reserve is equally recognisable, with the distinctive design of the power reserve display complemented by date and small seconds indicators the three complications bearing witness to the complexity of the calibre and the technical savoir-faire of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s watchmakers.

jaeger-lecoultre.com

YOUR WATCH While the size of the case remains the same as the preceding version of the Master Ultra Thin Power Reserve - retaining the elegant 39mm diameter and 8.95mm thickness - its design has been subtly modernised, with revised proportions and slimmer, more elongated lugs that make it even more comfortable on the wrist. The dial architecture has also been refined. While retaining all the symmetry and balance of the earlier dial layout, larger sub-dials highlight the complications, making the date, power reserve and small seconds displays even more legible than before, while giving the dial a more integrated overall appearance. This is amplified by the newly elongated shape of the applied hour

markers, and the use of a different finish (polished and satin) on each facet of the Dauphine hands, and the use of transferred golden dots to mark the minutes track. Matching the colour of the pink gold case, these elements create aesthetic harmony while contrasting dramatically with the gradient midnight blue of the sunray dial. The subtle matt texture of the sub-dials adds visual depth and richness. Adding a final flourish, the new Master Ultra Thin Power Reserve is presented on a navy-blue alligator strap. Straps and buckles can be very easily interchanged as the wearer wishes - adding even more versatility to this sophisticated, modern timepiece.

BREITLING

BREITLING VICTORIA BECKHAM Lending her signature style to the limited edition Chronomat 36 Victoria Beckham collection, the style icon has collaborated with Breitling to co-design a new line of timepieces. The Chronomat Automatic 36 Victoria Beckham collection, limited to just 1,500 pieces, is the result of a one-of-a-kind collaboration between the luxury watchmaker and the celebrated fashion house creative director. When Victoria Beckham launched her eponymous clothing line in 2008, fashion’s biggest players waited with bated breath to see her catwalk debut. More than 15 years later, Beckham’s designs are Fashion Week fixtures, coveted for their sleek sophistication and playful blend of feminine and masculine tailoring. “The Chronomat is already a versatile watch with a classic form,” commented Breitling CEO Georges Kern on the

partnership. “With Victoria Beckham’s signature style, this collection is a modern, radiant expression of that timepiece.” Beckham, in turn, expressed her admiration for Breitling’s creative process: “It has been wonderful watching Breitling’s craftsmanship and innovation come together with my ideas to create something so elegant and fresh.” The Chronomat is Breitling’s chic, all-purpose timepiece and a particular favourite of women who want the best of both worlds: fashion and function. The Victoria Beckham collection retains classic Chronomat features like the metal rouleaux bracelet and raised rider tabs at the 15-minute mark. These are combined with refined new colourways inspired by Beckham’s own Spring/Summer 2024 palette, including peppermint, midnight blue, dove grey, and sand.

breitling.com

YOUR WATCH The collection features both the Breitling logo on the dial and Victoria Beckham’s initials on the seconds hand, with a choice of cases in stainless steel or yellow gold - a material specially revived by Breitling for use on this line. The dials also reference the limitation: “One of 400” for each of the stainless-steel pieces, and “One of 100” for each of the gold variations. Look closely for the subtle VB logo and inscription on the bracelet. Powered by the Breitling Caliber 10, the Chronomat Automatic 36 Victoria Beckham has a running time of approximately 42 hours off the wrist. On the wrist, it keeps going as long as you do, thanks to the self-winding automatic three-hand movement with date feature. Like all Breitling watches, each piece has achieved Contrôle officiel suisse des chronomètres (COSC) certification, a distinguished independent validation of its precision and performance. This limited-edition Chronomat comes in a specially designed co-branded box and the gold pieces are accompanied by a cobranded travel pouch. The collection’s stunning campaign was shot by legendary Italian fashion photographer Mario Sorrenti, who has captured the world’s top leaders, celebrities, and supermodels, and whose work is permanently exhibited at the V&A Museum and National Gallery in London. The campaign features risingstar Annemary Aderibigbe, a model who embodies the essence of both the Breitling and Victoria Beckham woman: strength, sophistication, plus a touch of the unexpected. Since 2018, Breitling has been committed to expanding its women’s watch offerings. With the Chronomat Automatic 36 Victoria Beckham, Breitling continues to celebrate women who are bold, authentic, and unapologetically confident - traits that never go out of style.

ÉLAN LASER CLINIC

Hailed as the next generation of microneedling and a brandnew revolutionary treatment in aesthetic dermatology, Élan Laser Clinics have introduced the increasingly popular SQT Bio Microneedling in all their clinics. The world’s first no needle, liquid microneedling treatment, it uses 100% pure and natural biological extract Spongilla Spicules which are siliceous bio microneedles that are extracted from the freshwater Spongilla Lacustris sponge. Used as an external defence system by the sponges, the spicules can be seen as powder to the naked eye but microscopically they are shaped like sharp rod crystals which when applied, can stimulate the dermis of the skin and start surface microcirculation. The spicules effectively deliver active ingredients which stimulates the basal skin cells and provides skin with a range of natural benefits. Suitable for all skin tones, SQT is half the price of mechanical based treatments and achieves natural, safe and effective skin rejuvenation which is much more advanced than algae and seaweed. In just five minutes, 3.5 million natural siliceous microneedles are directly introduced into the dermis layer through hand massage to speed up skin metabolism and encourage collagen regeneration. The spicules are so small they can penetrate your skin pores much more effectively and go deeper into the dermis. The skin cells then regenerate at a much faster rate than any other collagen-inducing treatment and results can be seen in as little as 7 days. No anaesthesia, chemicals or acids are used and there isn’t any bleeding or

skin breakage. The treatment shortens the skin renewal cycle from 28 days to 7 days and achieves safe, and effective physical rejuvenation whilst accelerating natural exfoliation. Lasting only 5-10 minutes, it feels like an exfoliation scrub which gets more intense and you may feel a stinging sensation depending on the level of penetration. After the treatment, the skin will peel off naturally within 3-5 days and new skin can be obtained within 7 days. Flaking or peeling can be expected depending on the health of the patient’s skin. It’s non-invasive and totally different from a chemical peel. The spicules are not absorbed but can last in the skin from 48 to 72 hours after which they are naturally discharged and the risk of infection is minimal. An array of skin problems can be treated including acne, pigmentation, pimples, whelks, blackheads, whiteheads, large pores, papules, anti-aging, anti-wrinkle regeneration, fine lines, blemishes, lightens skin, melanin, sensitive skin, water and oil balancing. Research shows that one SQT treatment is equivalent to that of three to five microneedling sessions. Due to the Microscopic size of the bio-needles, the tip can penetrate the pores more effectively than any device on the market. SQT (Spirited Quintessential Transcend) Bio Microneedling is set to overtake most machine-based laser treatments in the next 5 years as the skin health is left in a much healthier position and heals much faster than traditional lasers and chemical peels.

However a walk down to the picturesque, and well-equipped, city, marina and traditional market is a must. Also alongside the marina is Funchal's cable car. Whisking you up the 3200 meter incline from Funchal to Monte parish, watch as you glide over the city and the many gardens, kitchen-gardens and houses. Funchal is known as the Garden City where the orange roofs blend with the green foliage and the blue of the ocean. You'll pass verdant slopes, hills and valleys, while you enjoy the smooth ride. At the top, the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens await. Occupying an area of 70,000 square meters, exotic plants, flamingos and tropical fauna live harmoniously together for all to enjoy. With a huge exotic plant’s collection, coming from all over the world, together with swans and duck’s, that populates the central lake, peacocks and chickens, that walk free in the main areas of the property, visitors can admire the beauty of nature while enjoying spectacular views of the ocean beyond. The gardens also house the Monte Palace Madeira Museum, there are three floors, two of which are dedicated to sculptures and the third houses a unique mineral collection gathered from the four corners of the world. The exposition entitled 'African Passion' shows part of a collection of contemporary Zimbabwean sculpture from the period 1966 to 1969. More than a 1000 sculptures are distributed on two floors of the museum. The top floor concentrates on

individual creations, allowing the viewer time to observe the characteristics and workmanship of each artist. The second floor captures the environment in which these talented men and women work in order to create and display their sculptures to the world. One of the most interesting characteristics of the Monte Palace Madeira is the existence of a large collection of tile panels placed along the walkways and amongst the vegetation acquired by José Berardo, under the specialist direction of Manuel Leitão. This collection, considered to be one of the most important in the country after that of the National Tile Museum, is made up of Hispano-Moorish tiles of the 15th and 16th centuries and panels produced in Portugal from the 16th to the 20th centuries. After all that exploring, head to nearby Pátio das Babosas Restaurant for a spot of lunch. With terrific views across Funchal and out to the ocean, the terrace restaurant offers a range of light bites, salads and more hearty dishes. From pizza to freshly caught fish prepared in traditional ways, food is well-prepared and very reasonably priced. Speaking of food, dinner and drink options at the hotel couldn't be better thanks to the plethora of choices. Restaurants on the 16th floor not only boast spectacular views of Funchal and the ocean, but guests can enjoy a leisurely breakfast at all-day Jacarandá Lounge & Club - the pancakes, and egg dishes are not to be missed, as are the fantastic array of charcuterie and pastries, including the famed pastel de nata!

SAVOY PALACE Elsewhere on the 16th floor, mouth-watering Asiatic inspired dishes including delicious sushi, sashimi, noodle and rice bowls with lobster, Waygu and gigantic prawns can be found at the Nikkei concept, which is available for dinner from Thursday to Monday. As mentioned, one of the highlights of booking in to The Reserve is that guests have full access to the facilities of Savoy Palace. For example, for those looking to indulge in an extraspecial dining experience, look no further than Galáxia Skyfood/ Skybar. The unique space provides an intergalactic-inspired fine dining concept based on Madeiran cuisine, which can be enjoyed by ordering à la carte or with the other-worldly tasting menus. SCALES BAR Tucked away beneath Drink with Sasha, in the vibrant heart of Marylebone and Mayfair, Scales is a secret haven for cocktail enthusiasts. Opened in December 2023, Scales is the brainchild of passionate mixologists Din Jusufi and Engji Shala, who honed their craft for five years at the acclaimed restaurant Farzi London. Stepping through a discreet door in the wine shop adorned with the bar's logo, guests are transported into a chic, dimly lit space designed for intimate conversations and extraordinary cocktails. Intimate and welcoming, Scales invites lingering conversations over meticulously crafted cocktails. At Scales, chemistry and balance, as reflected in the name, are at the core of the mission: evident in the laboratory where all the cocktails are prepared. There is an extensive range of equipment in the lab that extracts the flavours of fresh produce into the cocktails, including a centrifuge that is used to separate solids from liquids in fresh fruits and veg, and also to extract flavour into a spirit. This results in elegant, clear drinks, changing the overall texture of the cocktail as well. Complementing the seasonal menus that focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, the vibrant Shiso Apple, featuring Desi Daru vodka, shiso leaf, green apple, and bergamot, is a new year delight as we anticipate the arrival of the lighter months. Elsewhere the earthy Fig, combines Camus cognac with figs, citrus, pandan, and almond, and those who will be sad to see the back of winter can enjoy seasonal twists such as the wintery Gingerbread, a delightful combination of Tidal rum, gingerbread, coconut milk, walnut, and citrus. Those continuing the efforts of Dry January can enjoy a menu of non-alcoholic drinks using Everleaf Drinks’ innovative alcohol-free spirits. This includes the refreshing Forest: a blend of Everleaf Forest, raspberry, and grapefruit soda. Scales is open to customers Tuesday-Saturday evenings.

ST. JOHN AT FORTNUM'S St. John Restaurant is launching at the Field restaurant of Fortnum & Mason, for three weeks this month. Recreating its Smithfield establishment from 6th - 22nd February, while the kitchen of the St. John Smithfield goes into dry dock next month for a well-earned refit, St. John at Fortnum’s will unite two beloved stalwarts of the British culinary scene. The entire merry St. John Smithfield band will temporarily relocate, playfully recreating the St. John experience within the hallowed halls of another noted London establishment. Co-founder Trevor Gulliver has been given carte blanche with the space, designed to draw smiles of recognition and comfort - you will be in St. John. The brigade is led by Smithfield Head Chef Steve Darou in the kitchen, and St. John’s own knowledgeable front of house team on the door and the floor. Faithful to the much-loved structure and rhythm of St. John Smithfield’s bar and restaurant, the bar area will serve delights from the chalk board and a fine drinks list of cocktails, revered own-label wines, and French bottles selected by Trevor. The dining room is a generous space with London smiling through the windows and

boasting a menu of St. John classics, as well as the odd wink to its temporary home for the essential expression of genius loci. Open for breakfast each day, this occasion will see the temporary return of the famous and much-missed St. John Bacon Sandwich. Lunch is a daily celebration of Bone marrow and parsley salad, of Suet-crusted pies, of Kidneys, of those freshly baked, melting Madeleines and a cacophony of comforting desserts. Dinner is served early daily for those heading to the bright lights of the theatre, and later on Fridays and Saturdays. On Sundays, lunch is a languid affair with large tables that encourage a gathering of friends and family settling in to the afternoon - a feasting menu for parties can be ordered with sufficient notice. At the new Fortnum’s Food and Drink Studio, a program of wine-led events celebrating St. John’s lists, knowledge and vinous relationships with fun and a little irreverence. St. John at Fortnum’s will open from 6th February until 22nd February, from Tuesday to Sunday for breakfast and lunch, and for dinner too on Friday and Saturday. Bookings are open for tables, and for group dining via the website.

Located on Golden Square, where Soho meet Mayfair, the glamorous restaurant is inspired by the Golden Age, making Bébé Bob quite possibly the most glamorous rotisserie on the dining scene. With a great slogan on the menu of “Any main course the customer wants as long as it is chicken or chicken.” - this isn't a place for vegans. With succulent Vendée chicken from Pays de la Loire or buttery Landais chicken from Gascony, this is chicken at its finest. Both chickens have been chosen for the juicy, tender textures and rich flavours and are served with chicken jus to further enhance the taste. Cooked to order and serving two, the lunch menu is not only fantastic value at just £15.00, the a la carte menu also features a range of fabulous, decadent options. From anchovy egg mayonnaise to Caviar; spicy, juicy VSOP Cognac prawn cocktail; and shoulder of black Iberian pig, dry aged for 24 months. Decadent truffled fries and truffled cauliflower cheese make up the sides, along with sautéed kale in confit garlic and onion olive oil, and roasted potatoes, carrots and parsnips cooked in chicken fat. THEO RANDALL Best known for being awarded a Michelin Star, celebrity chef Theo Randall has created an Italian Regional Tasting Menu with wine pairing as well as a special Valentine’s Day menu at his restaurant, Theo Randall at The Intercontinental Hotel in London’s Park Lane. Inspired by his frequent trips throughout Italy over the past twenty years, his menus are dictated by the fresh, seasonal ingredients available from the market each day. His passion for food was born from regular family holidays across Europe where he was in awe of the chefs, and he knew from an early age that he was destined for a culinary future. He values the individual flavours of well-sourced, quality ingredients over complex techniques and this is evident in his no-nonsense approach to rustic, traditional, good quality Italian food which has seen him become a great success. He believes an appreciation of ingredients can transform a simple pasta course into something worth recreating at home. Established since November 2006 and taking inspiration for his menus from his frequent trips, Theo invites you to his awardwinning restaurant to experience a taste of Italy and explore the flavours of Italian cuisine in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. From Puglia and Tuscany to Liguria, Lombardia, Campania and Sicily, each menu highlights special producers and regional

ingredients alongside specially curated wine pairings. The Regional Tasting menu with wine pairing offers an antipasto of thinly sliced prosciutto di Parmesan with wild rocket, aged balsamic vinegar, 2-year-old parmesan and fried pastry while the primo, Tagliatelle alla Bolognese, consists of Fresh pasta with traditional slow-cooked beef sauce with red wine, tomatoes and butter. VALENTINE'S DAY Valentine’s Day marks the perfect time to celebrate the ones you love, and nothing says ‘I love you’ more than the prestige of Champagne. Champagne continues to be the centrepiece for some of the most prestigious venues in London. So much so that new bars, specifically dedicated to Champagne, continue to open throughout the capital - Le Bar Du Champagne & Modern Bistro, Covent Garden is one of the newest openings as of December 2023 and allows consumers to enjoy both houses and grower Champagnes in a more laid-back and romantic atmosphere. Champagne is timeless and versatile, particularly due to the range of styles that this pinnacle of sparkling wine has to offer. Rosé Champagne is often selected on Valentine’s Day due to its pink hue and ‘Instagrammable’ appeal, but it also offers notes of red berries and yellow fruits that pair incredibly well with a range of dishes from lobster to poultry. Vintage Champagne is the most suitable companion to any exceptional occasion. These wines are matured for a minimum of three years and exhibit nutty and toasted aromas, as well as honey and stewed fruits. The calibre of these wines and the complexity bought to them by ageing, makes

them a wonderful addition to your Valentine’s Day Celebrations. With this in mind, The Bureau du Champagne UK has selected a hand full of London’s newest Champagne Bars to enjoy this Valentine’s Day.

BAR DU CHAMPAGNE & MODERN BISTRO December 2023 saw the opening of Bar Du Champagne & Modern Bistro. i7

Pushing the boundaries of luxury on the road travel is something BMW's 7 series knows all too well. Delivering an experience for driver and passengers to rival the very best and introducing new technologies since its launch all the way back in 1977. Today, the model line continues this theme, bringing the very latest in design and technology to the production line and now boasts a selection of fully electric options to push the 7 series into the future of driving. The latest generation of the marque's flagship saloon redefines the luxury segment once again. With an incredible electrification offering - currently totalling seven model variants - from the eDrive50 Excellence through to the range topping M70 xDrive boasting 455hp and 659hp respectively and 0-62mph times of 5.5 and lightning quick 3.7 seconds, there is an i7 to suit every driver. What's more, BMW have now also introduced i7 Protection for those in need of some additional safety when on the road. Delivering your i7 with VR9 grade protection - one of the highest available on a civilian vehicle - meaning you'll be ready for almost anything that comes at you. Innovation is where the 7 series truly shines and this latest generation is no different. Of course, the obvious advances come in the shape of the full electrification of the i7 variants, but there is a whole host of additional aspects within that push the BMW i7 to new levels of luxury travel. A rather significant step up from its predecessor, the new 7 series provides a vastly improved driving experience for both driver and passenger thanks to advances in design and digital technologies across the board. Plug-in technology now features on every 7 series available in the UK, with just two plug-in hybrid options - 750e xDrive and M760e xDrive - in addition to the extensive electric offering for those not quite ready for the jump to all-electric just yet. Continuing the new design ethos of the brand, the i7 features an exaggerated front 'kidney' grille - which varies depending on the model trim chosen including 'sportier' black detail on M Sport models - while a split headlight configuration adds a distinctive design element to the cars front end and consequent presence on the road, which is undeniable anyway thanks to its size. This modern, angular and sophisticated front-end design is reserved for the brand's luxury models defining it not only from its competitors, but the rest of the stable too. The aforementioned size isn't simply a design illusion, the new i7 has grown by 130mm in length, 48mm in width and 51mm in height compared to the previous generation 7 series with a wheelbase that is 5mm longer to further enhance passenger comfort in the rear. Coinciding with this, the headroom has also been significantly improved for an all-round enhancement in comfort for both passenger and driver alike.

It can be moved closer or further from the rear passengers to put it within arm’s reach for touch controls or to manoeuvre it to the preferred viewing distance. Driving you i7 couldn't be easier and you can enjoy it in the comfort of knowing every step has been take to create the most sustainable and environmentally conscious car possible. The electric motors work according to the principle of an electrically excited synchronous motor, where it is a precisely controllable electrical feed that sets the rotor in motion, rather than using fixed permanent magnets. This means the use of rare-earth metals is avoided altogether in the manufacture of the rotor. This virtually silent, instantaneous power delivery creates a smooth, comfortable and pleasurable driving experience. The

The fully variable drive system is intelligently connected with the system of powertrain and chassis control functions, whose extremely quick and precise responses help to sustain dynamic driving even in adverse road and weather conditions. Despite its size, this is a car that is just as enjoyable to drive as it is to be driven in, but there's no denying the truly spectacular interior space that BMW have created here.

CHELSEA CARS

1953 Jaguar XK 120 £POA

P U R E LY B R I T I S H The XK120 was unveiled in open two-seater form at the London Motor Show in 1948 as a testbed and show car for the new Jaguar XK engine. This display car was the very first prototype, chassis number 660001 and looked almost identical to the production cars. It was an immediate sensation, which influenced Jaguar founder and Chairman William Lyons to put it into production. Early models enjoyed wood-framed open 2-seater bodies dressed with aluminium panels, however production switched to the heavier all-steel setup at the beginning of 1950 due to cost and production time. The "120" in the name seemingly lost its relevance at that point as it referred to the aluminium car's ability to reach a 120mph top speed - which made it the world's fastest production car at the time of its launch. During its six year production run, the XK120 developed across three body style options - open two-seater; fixed head coupé from 1951; and drophead coupé from 1953 - all of which were twoseaters and each available in either left or right-hand drive. A total

of 12,055 XK120's had left the factory by the time production stopped in 1954 with the right-hand drive variations of the fixed and drophead coupés being delivered the least. Only 295 right-hand drive drop-head variants of the iconic XK120 were ever produced from 1953 to 1954, immediately making it a rare car. This example however boasts some additional details that push it into the upper echelons of XK120 fame. A matching numbers car finished in striking British Racing Green coachwork with a suede green leather interior and matching dark green soft top was the specification of choice for the thirteenth right-hand drive example to leave the production line. It comes complete with heritage certificate along with invoices to show works carried out on a full restoration and engine rebuild which was undertaken just 1,200 miles ago. A car with this much pedigree shouldn't be messed with and this is a stunning display of a genuine, original specification UK matching numbers car that is not to be missed. One for the purists, it is deserving of a home that will truly appreciate the magnificence of the car.

SAVILLS

LONDON LEADS THE WAY FOR PRIME AND SUPER PRIME STOCK with Alex Christian, Joint Head of Savills Private Office

London’s traditional prime postcodes remained in vogue in 2023, with sales in Chelsea, Kensington, Belgravia, Mayfair and Knightsbridge making up half of all sales in excess of £5 million that took place across the year. Alex Christian, joint head of the Savills Private Office, details how London’s prime £5 million-plus sales market has remained relatively robust versus the pre-pandemic average. “In 2023 we saw a rebalancing back in favour of the prime postcodes that traditionally dominated £5 million-plus sales pre-pandemic, driven by the return of international travel for business and leisure, and the global wealthy once again looking

to buy into the London lifestyle. Domestic buyers who shaped the market in the two years prior helped put the prime suburbs, beyond prime central London, on the £5 million-plus map. “Across the year there were a total of 526 sales (new build and second hand) worth in excess of £5 million. While this is 13% lower than the record high in 2022, it is +71% above the pre-pandemic total of 308 £5 million-plus sales in 2019. “In value terms, £5.7 billion worth of £5 million-plus properties changed hands in 2023, with sales in the more rarefied £10 million-plus market making up £3.2 billion of the total amount.

SAVILLS “Half of all sales in excess of £5 million in 2023 took place in traditional prime postcodes Chelsea (12%), Kensington (11%) and Belgravia (10%), Mayfair (8%) and Knightsbridge (7%). “Belgravia, in particular, has jumped back in popularity over the past 12 months, thanks to significant investment into the area and an evolved retail and restaurant offering, specifically Eccleston Yards, which has brought a younger demographic to the area. We can expect to see Knightsbridge follow suit with the regeneration currently underway.” “In 2023, apartments made up the highest percentage (43%) of £5 million-plus sales across London since the Savills records began in 2012. This is in part due to the return of international buyers who are often less concerned about larger floor plates and private outdoor space than the quality of design, finish and service. Our buyers are hugely successful and time-poor, so demand is focused on best-in-class properties, particularly at the top end. “There continues to be a scarcity of larger stock on the market, with a very limited new build pipeline. However, owners are beginning to show greater commitment to coming to market, in order to take advantage of current buyer positivity.”

YOUR PROPERTY Prime London holds on to property millionaire crown “It’ll come as no surprise that London also saw the highest concentration of property millionaires in 2023, despite the number of property millionaires across Great Britain falling from the pandemic peak. “While there an estimated 670,000 millionaires in Great Britain, London locations continue to dominate the £1 million map, and the boroughs of Kensington & Chelsea, Westminster, Camden, Hammersmith & Fulham and Richmond Upon Thames had the highest percentage of sales over £1 million in 2023. “This is in part due to prime property prices faring better within the capital than across the rest of the Country (-1.1% vs -4.8%), resulting in London boroughs having been more able to hold on to their share of £1 million property sales.”

HAPPY, HEALTHY HOME

HAPPY HEALTHY H O M E

Tips to create a space kind to you and to the planet with Julia Kendell from Kendell + Co. Julia is an interior designer for the London Homebuilding & Renovating Show sharing her expert tips and ideas to help you create your dream interior.

In recent years, there has been a profound shift in the way we view our homes. We have come to recognise how our homes nurture both our physical and mental well-being. This transformation has been accelerated by the global pandemic which has prompted us to reevaluate the importance of a high-functioning home. The desire for a happy, healthy living space has paved the way for a new era of mindful living, where sustainability, well-being and eco-conscious choices converge.

The Pandemic's Impact on Home Living The pandemic forced us to spend more time within the confines of our homes, prompting a collective reassessment of our living spaces. As a result, interior design focus has shifted towards

creating an environment that not only supports our daily activities but also enhances our overall well-being.

Harnessing the Power of Sunlight One key aspect of a healthy home is the incorporation of natural light. Exposure to sunlight is crucial for our well-being as it regulates our circadian rhythm and influences our mood. Maximising natural light in the home can be achieved through strategically placed windows, skylights, and the use of lightcoloured interior finishes, and hard and reflective surfaces that bounce available light throughout the rooms. During the evening, the ability to dim artificial lighting is essential to reset our circadian rhythm, promoting a restful sleep and overall balance.

YOUR INTERIOR

Natural Materials and Sustainable Choices The materials we choose for our homes play a pivotal role in shaping our experience. Opting for natural materials not only enhances the aesthetics of a space but also contributes to a healthier living environment ensuring clean air quality. Sustainable choices, such as reclaimed wood, bamboo, and recycled materials, minimise the environmental impact of construction and contribute to a more eco-friendly home.

Well-being Tied to Sustainable, Eco Practices There is a very real synergy between sustainable living and a healthier home environment and, in turn, beneficial to our wellbeing and contentment. Mindful consumption, energy efficiency, and waste reduction contribute not only to a healthier planet but also to a healthier lifestyle. The commitment to eco-friendly practices, such as using energy-efficient appliances and reducing single-use plastics, aligns our personal well-being with the wellbeing of the planet.

Embracing Biophilic Design Principles Biophilic design, an approach that incorporates natural elements into the built environment, has gained prominence in creating harmonious spaces and a balanced living experience. Introducing indoor plants and natural textures connects us with nature, promoting a sense of calm and well-being. Biophilic design not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of a home but also contributes to cleaner air quality.

Creating a Clutter-Free, High-Functioning Home The state of our surroundings has a profound impact on our mental state. A clutter-free and well-organised home provides a sense of order and tranquility, reducing stress and promoting mental clarity. We all know how annoying it can be to lose important items just at the point they are needed. A high-functioning home reduces stress levels by taking out these ‘micro-stress’ points we encounter during the day if the house is badly organised.

Practical Tips for a Happy, Healthy Home • Maximize Natural Light: Arrange furniture to allow natural light to reach all corners of your home. Consider swapping heavy

curtains for blinds that enable you to control the amount of sunlight entering the space. Similarly, declutter around windows. Swap out carpets for solid floors to massively increase the feeling of light and space. • Dimmable Lighting Systems: Invest in lighting fixtures with dimming capabilities and use candles to add a nurturing energy during the evening. Mimicking natural light conditions helps regulate your circadian rhythm for better sleep. • Choose Natural Materials: Opt for furniture and decoration made from natural materials like wood, stone, and organic fabrics. These materials look and feel appealing and contribute to a healthier indoor environment. • Prioritise Sustainability: When making purchasing decisions, consider the environmental impact. Choose products made from sustainable materials, support local artisans, and reduce single-use plastics. • Embrace Biophilic Design: Introduce indoor plants, natural textures, and water features to bring the outdoors inside. These elements create a connection with nature, fostering a sense of tranquility and balance. • Mindful Consumption: Be intentional about what you bring into your home. Choose quality over quantity, and consider the longevity and environmental impact of your purchases. • Declutter Regularly: Make decluttering a part of your routine. Donate or recycle items you no longer need, and keep only those that bring happiness and serve a purpose. A clutter-free space promotes mental well-being. Interior design should encompass a holistic approach that considers the well-being of both its inhabitants and the planet. By incorporating these design principles you can create a home that not only delights the senses but also nurtures a happy, healthy lifestyle. As we navigate the complexities of modern living, our homes can truly become our sanctuary, reflecting the values of mindfulness, sustainability, and well-being.
