A TRIBUTE TO HEROIC LEGACY

AVI-8 introduces a special capsule collection, the AVI-8 Hawker Hurricane Night Reaper Limited Editions. These extraordinary timepieces pay homage to the legendary Squadron Leader Karel “Kut” Kuttelwascher and the remarkable history of the Royal Air Force’s (RAF) famed No. 1 Squadron.

Squadron Leader Karel Kuttelwascher, renowned as one of the RAF’s most successful Czechoslovak pilots and a top ace during World War II, left an indelible mark on aviation history. Known

as “The Czech night hawk” in wartime media, his exceptional achievements earned him fame and recognition worldwide. No. 1 Squadron, where Kuttelwascher served, was tasked with night intruder sorties in 1942. These missions demanded not only extraordinary flying skills but also exceptional navigation abilities, keen eyesight, and a hunter’s instinct, all in the most perilous flying conditions. Adding to the challenge, their black-painted Hurricanes carried a mere 91 rounds of ammunition per gun, providing just nine seconds of firing time for each mission.

Kuttelwascher’s Hurricane, distinguished by its black paint and adorned with a yellow scythe and a red “Night Reaper” banner, quickly justified its name through his remarkable feats. The black camouflage was carefully chosen to enhance the aircraft‘s elusiveness during missions where short burst firing was the only option. Kuttelwascher’s incredible 18 confirmed air victories (some suggest 20) earned him numerous awards, including the Distinguished Flying Cross, from both his native Czechoslovakia and other Allied nations. His unrivalled success in night intruder missions led to the well-deserved nickname “Night Reaper.”

The Night Reaper Limited Editions are a remarkable capsule collection within the AVI-8 Hawker Hurricane family of timepieces. Each watch is coloured and camouflaged in a palette of deep black, reflecting the legendary Hurricane JX-E (serial BE581) flown by Kuttelwascher. The Classic Chronograph edition and the Carey Dual Time edition are a limited edition of 170 pieces each, whereas the Clowes edition is a limited edition of 120 pieces.

WATCHES OF SWITZERLAND TANK LOUIS CARTIER

Watches of Switzerland, the leading luxury watch retailer, has announced a momentous milestone of 100 years in the industry. To mark this exceptional occasion, Watches of Switzerland and Cartier are paying tribute to the centennial with a Limited Edition Tank Louis Cartier watch.

The Tank Louis Cartier Limited Edition is a true reflection of both Cartier and Watches of Switzerland’s commitment to excellence and craftsmanship. Designed in 1917 by Louis Cartier, the eldest grandson of the Maison’s founder, the iconic Tank watch has always embodied timelessness and elegance. Over time, the Tank became the watch of the artistic and cultural avant-garde who appreciated its purity of line and creativity.

The Tank watch is an icon of modern watchmaking. The refined design of this wristwatch, combining geometry and harmony, defines its strong identity. Immediately recognisable, the Tank design has been reinterpreted for more than a century through multiple variations that remain faithful to the spirit of the original design.

Introduced in 1922, the Tank Louis Cartier was an unapologetic choice of the rectangular form, further distinguished by soft angles and the distinct roundness of the tops of the lugs. This piece fastidiously embodied the contribution made by Louis Cartier to the modern style later known as Art Deco. The proud, taught lines of the square and rectangle appear more gently, and the geometry of the corners is relaxed.

In 2024, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Watches of Switzerland, Cartier has designed an iconic creation: a Tank Louis Cartier in a numbered limited edition of 100 pieces. Exclusively available in the UK at Watches of Switzerland showrooms from June, the watch is available for pre order now.

cartier.com

This timepiece features a sophisticated and elevated design, with a brushed gold dial offering a subtle radiant effect. Supplied on an elegant dark-navy alligator strap it offers a timelessly elegant pairing whilst drawing attention to the deep blue of the sapphire cabochon in the crown and its blued-steel hands.

The mechanical movement, 1917MC, a Manufacture Cartier calibre, is one present in many recent Tank Louis Cartier and Tank Asymétrique models. The case back has been given a special Watches of Switzerland engraving signifying the longlasting relationship between Cartier and Watches of Switzerland.

“We are thrilled to commemorate our 100th anniversary with the launch of the exclusive Tank Louis Cartier,” said Brian Duffy, CEO of Watches of Switzerland Group. “This relationship with Cartier, one of the most esteemed watch brands in the world, represents our shared passion for horology and our commitment to delivering exceptional craftsmanship to our clients.”

“We are honoured to present this special timepiece which embodies the spirit of Cartier London’s rich heritage in watchmaking and innovation in shaped watches,” said Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK. “We are delighted to reveal a unique design of the Tank watch and are thrilled to share this with Watches of Switzerland for their centenary celebration.”

The relationship with Cartier spans over 70 years, with a Cartier Boutique housed within the flagship Watches of Switzerland showroom on Regent Street, London along with a growing presence online. Clients can view this piece in person at the Watches of Switzerland Regent Street, Battersea, Knightsbridge, Brent Cross, Broadgate, and Canary Wharf showrooms, or talk to the Virtual Boutique team about it.

NEO BRIDGES AM

Continuing their official partnership, Aston Martin and Girard-Perregaux jointly created a spectacular timepiece, reimagining ‘the bridge’, one of the oldest mechanical signatures in watchmaking. An addition to the famous Bridges collection, the Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition showcases functional components often hidden from view and brings them to the fore. Inspired by Aston Martin’s next generation of sportscars, designers took influence from the world’s first Super Tourer, DB12, with the watch reflecting the car’s sculpted contours and sharp lines.

In 2021, Girard-Perregaux was announced as the Official Watch Partner of the ultra-luxury British brand Aston Martin. Both companies have a rich heritage, with over 300 years of combined history, operating in the rarefied world of luxury. Moreover, the iconic British marque and Swiss Manufacture are synonymous with design excellence and no-compromise engineering, making them a perfect match. The collaboration between the two leaders has seen the creation of some truly exceptional timepieces, each one proudly bearing the name of both marques.

The fifth co-branded timepiece in their long-standing collaboration, the Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition is driven by the passion of both parties to push the performance envelope in terms of design and watchmaking expertise. It is contemporary and seamlessly blends beauty and engineering to deliver breathtaking performance.

In 1867, Constant Girard sketched a pocket watch endowed with three parallel bridges. Unusually, these prominent bridges, essential components that form part of a movement’s structure, were refined and famously became design elements. However, while Girard-Perregaux is justly proud of its heritage it does not languish in the past, but wholeheartedly embraces the future, often uniting thought-provoking styling, cutting-edge materials and inventive mechanisms.

Aston Martin and Girard-Perregaux both speak the same language when it comes to luxury. They each understand the importance of consistent design while simultaneously seeking advancement. Underpinning this shared philosophy is a belief that mechanical components should arouse intense emotions.

The Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition, a watch that perpetuates some of the design ideas found on former collaborative watches, also delivers a new, fresh-faced appearance, suffused with considered details. It eschews a conventional dial to reveal its inverted movement, the Calibre GP0840000-2164, a configuration that brings components usually found to the rear of the watch, relocating them to the front. Upholding the spirit of the Bridges collection, the functional components on this model contribute to its overall visual allure. The Neo-shaped bridges support the gear train and balance and the wearer is invited to witness several parts in conversation, working together to impart time. Upholding Girard-Perregaux tradition, the arrangement

of movement components confers symmetry, thereby delivering a harmonious appearance.

Skeletonised baton-type indexes proclaim the hours and minutes. Inspired by the automotive world where extraneous material is removed to save weight, this watch dispenses with a conventional dial. The hands incorporate luminescent material which bestows a green emission in restricted light, a colour that will forever be associated with Aston Martin. The suspended indexes, located on a ring encircling the dial, project outwards and are lined with luminescent material which again appear green in dim conditions. Both the design of the hands and indexes uphold the styling of previous dual-branded watches. In between each index, crisp green markings, positioned on the aforesaid ring, denote each minute in lucid form. Endowed with two Neo bridges, executed in Aston Martin Green, the design pays tribute to Constant’s 19th century creation, albeit realised in a contemporary form, while the colour of the bridges honours Aston Martin and its rich history of crafting high-performance cars.

Power is a prerequisite for performance, something that is evident within any creation bearing the names Aston Martin and Girard-Perregaux. A barrel, effectively the fuel tank of the watch, is positioned at 1.30. It’s supported by a black openworked bridge and bears the name of the Swiss Manufacture. This watch is automatic, harvesting energy from the natural motion of the wearer’s wrist, using a small oscillating weight, termed a micro-rotor. The dimensions of the micro-rotor contribute to the movement’s slender profile, just 5.45mm in height. Furthermore, it also affords unhindered views of the movement. In this instance, the micro-rotor is engraved with the name of the British luxury marque, sharing equal status with the Manufacture’s name gracing the barrel. When designing the barrel and microrotor, the joint creative team took inspiration from the brakes which are revealed behind Aston Martin DB12’s spoked wheels, showcasing sharper lines and extra openings.

Colour is a useful means of accentuating shapes, imbuing sculptural forms with light and shade, emotion and passion. Appraising the Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition, brushed greys, vibrant rubies, brooding blacks and silver-coloured wheels unite to impart time while simultaneously stirring the soul. Most notably, the Aston Martin Green Neo Bridges reveal different tones as they engage with light. Endowing the bridges with colour while maintaining their alluring three-dimensional appearance was technically challenging.

The lightweight case, measuring 45mm in diameter, is formed of titanium dressed in a suit of black DLC. Effortlessly stylish, it plays a deferential role to the watch’s display, allowing both static and dynamic movement components the opportunity to shine.

Matching the scarcity and exclusivity of an Aston Martin model, the Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition is a rare sight, limited to just 250 pieces.

APERTO 1

A BOVET & PININFARINA COLLABORATION

The open-worked timepiece is a traditional design staple of the watchmaking industry. Now, with the introduction of the Aperto 1 - Italian for “Open” - Bovet and Pininfarina have unveiled a highly contemporary take on this traditional design ethic.

This exciting new timepiece combines the traditional arts of skeletonising and exquisite finishing with innovation in materials and a thoroughly futuristic design. In addition, the Bovet Aperto 1 incorporates a brand-new system which makes exchanging the timepiece’s straps simple and effortless.

The Bovet Aperto 1 is a mechanical watchmaking masterpiece that redefines the traditional skeleton’s delicate, technical, and aesthetic role. It signals a bold new approach for the future of skeletonised high watchmaking. Transcending the ordinary, the timepiece continues to place the intricate dance of gears and mechanics on full display, while at the same time adding a new ingredientsupreme versatility.

With its bold, Pininfarina-led design, the Aperto 1 seamlessly blends past, present, and future. When briefing the world-renowned design house, Bovet owner Pascal Raffy requested Pininfarina’s designers to conceive a more versatile and modern interpretation of the age-old art of skeletonisation, opening everything for all to see. He asked for simplicity, transparency and lightness to be expressed in a thoroughly contemporary aesthetic, emphasizing allround usability, offering a high level of flexibility to the timepiece’s owner.

The result is an exciting, almost playfully modern timepiece which pays homage to the open-work watchmaking genre while transforming the visual appeal of a skeletonised timepiece into a more robust expression, perfectly adapted to the modern-day environment. Extremely light, thanks to its grade 5 titanium case and well-sized at 42mm, the Aperto 1 is supremely comfortable on the wrist.

Drawing inspiration from Pininfarina’s vast repertoire including sports cars, yachts, airplanes, architecture and furniture, the Aperto 1 exudes a perfect balance of elegance, savoir-faire and functionality, together with a spirited sporty character. With Aperto 1, time is revealed in its purest and most contemporary form yet.

The Bovet Aperto 1 is powered by a brand-new, hand-wound, open-worked manufacture movement that captures the essence of futurist high watchmaking with its

bovet.com

impeccable design and precision engineering, reduced to its bare essentials.

Its open-worked movement has had everything extraneous removed; its bridges and plates all merging in the centre of the movement. Thanks to sapphire crystals on both sides, the in-house movement architecture of this timepiece is on full display.

Aperto 1 features a 42mm grade 5 Titanium case that is sandblasted in such a way that fingerprints will not show after handling. The movement itself is coated with black and tantalum grey treatments, highlighting its cutting-edge architecture. The movement components are all crafted in-house by Bovet, open-worked and finished by hand to perfection.

Each movement undergoes at least 10 hours of handfinishing just for the plates and bridges alone. The techniques used include: PVD or CVD coating (depending on the colour); bead blasting (challenging not to deform the components and to keep a uniform orientation of the grains); graining of the flanks; polishing of the bevels; polishing of stone gouges and screws; perlage, circular Côtes de Genève; polishing, and anglage. This extraordinary level of attention to detail, beloved by collectors, should be viewed through a loupe to be completely appreciated.

Ultimate finesse is required of Bovet’s dedicated artisans due to the movement parts being coated before assembly. Great care must be exercised not to damage the coatings in any way. One slip of a tool during assembly and the component must be discarded.

A significant and distinguishing feature of the Aperto 1 is its unique approach to interchangeable straps, inspired by Bovet's patented Amadeo system. Ultimate versatility is the result. Using a completely new system created exclusively for Aperto 1, the owner is able to change the straps in just a few seconds by simply activating the pushers to remove each strap and insert an alternative one. The system couldn't be easier or quicker, underlining the attention to the needs of collectors that defines all Bovet timepieces. Each Aperto 1 comes with two straps, and additional straps may be purchased through authorised Bovet retailers.

The Pininfarina name is characterized by its rich history in design excellence and craftsmanship, developing engineering artwork for more than 90 years. Bovet echoes this ethos in horology, with generations of artisans over its 200-year history shaping incredible, meticulously detailed timepiece artistry.

IWC Mercedes-AMG

Ahead of the first ever Las Vegas Grand Prix™, IWC Schaffhausen introduced two performance chronographs dedicated to its motorsport partners Mercedes-AMG and the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team. Crafted from titanium or Ceratanium®, the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 combines IWC’s expertise in chronographs and advanced materials. A distinguishing feature is the ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale, enabling the wearer to measure the average speed based on the distance travelled. Black dials with a glossy finish, recessed totalisers, applied indices and numerals filled with Super-LumiNova® complement the sleek design. All models are powered by the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre and are water-resistant to 10 bar.

IWC Schaffhausen has an extensive legacy of manufacturing instrument watches. Performance criteria such as high accuracy, robustness, reliability and durability are therefore deeply ingrained in the company’s DNA as a watchmaker. The performance ethos that is expressed through IWC’s products is also reflected through two of its longest standing partnerships. In 2004, the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer became a partner of Mercedes-AMG, the performance car subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. As a logical continuation, IWC became the “Official Engineering Partner” of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team in 2013.

The Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 AMG ( Ref. I W388305/04) features a case, crown and pushers crafted from robust and lightweight titanium. IWC pioneered this hard-tomachine metal in the watch industry in 1980 when it released the first wristwatch with a titanium case and bracelet. IWC had acquired the specific know-how for machining titanium in close collaboration with French aerospace company Aérospatiale. Offering the highest strength-to-density ratio of any metal, titanium is frequently used in automotive engineering to manufacture components for highperformance engines. The grade 5 titanium alloy used for the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 case is around 45% lighter than steel and remarkably rigid. The case features a brushed finish with polished details on the horns. One version is fitted with a robust, waterproof black rubber strap (Ref. IW388305), while the other version (Ref. IW388304) features a titanium bracelet with H-links and an integrated folding clasp.

The Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team ( Ref. I W388306/07) features a case made of Ceratanium®. Developed by IWC, this material combines the lightness and structural integrity of titanium with a hardness and scratch-resistance similar to ceramic.

The lightweight material is based on a special titanium alloy forged to IWC’s specifications. The case components are machined from bars using computer controlled turning and milling centres. Afterward, they are elaborately finished by hand and fired in a kiln at

iwc.com

high temperatures. During this firing process, a phase transformation occurs, and the material’s surface obtains properties similar to ceramic and its striking matte black finish. One version is fitted with a black rubber strap with a Ceratanium® pin buckle (Ref. IW388306). The other version features a Ceratanium® bracelet with an integrated folding clasp (Ref. IW388307).

An outstanding functional feature of the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 is the ceramic bezel with a tachymeter scale, which allows the wearer to measure the average speed in relation to the distance travelled.

Pushing the chronograph’s start button initiates a measurement. Once a distance of one kilometre has been covered, the chronograph is stopped. The central chronograph seconds hand will point to a number on the rotating tachymeter scale, corresponding to the average speed in kilometres per hour.

Matching the polished black ceramic bezels, all models feature black dials with a glossy finish and black hands. The recessed totalisers and the applied indices and numerals, in blackened nickel, filled with Super-LumiNova®, provide additional depth and ensure excellent night-time readability. The manufacturing of this intricate dial represents a feat of craftsmanship and finishing. The polished black lacquer finish is the result of an elaborate, highly controlled and perfected production process.

The three totalisers are individually finished and printed before they are mounted on the lacquered base plate to create the final dial. The approximately 20 appliques are individually polished by hand, fixed to the dial and then filled with luminous material.

All versions of the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 are powered by the IWC-manufactured 69385 calibre movement. Comprising 242 parts, this mechanical chronograph movement has been engineered with an uncompromising focus on robustness, reliability, and precision. Its bi-directional pawl winding system builds up a power reserve of 46 hours in the mainspring.

Column-wheel control of the chronograph ensures that individual phases in the switching sequence are clearly defined. There is also a distinct tactile resistance when the buttons are pushed. The chronographs features IWC’s characteristic vertical subdial arrangement. The stopped minutes are displayed directly at the 12 o’clock position, enhancing readability. The assembly of these movements at IWC’s Manufakturzentrum is organised in a dedicated line. Dividing the process into several smaller steps is paramount for achieving the best possible quality. After assembly and regulation, all movement functions are tested automatically over 12 days in the FIM (Final Inspection Movement) cell developed by IWC.

In addition, all four timepieces are eligible for registration under the My IWC care program and can benefit from a 6-year extension to the standard 2-year International Limited Warranty.

REBELLION TIMEPIECES

PREDATOR 2.0

Rebellion Timepieces rolls out a range of newcomers, epitomising the spirit of the ultimate endurance race. As the event’s Official Timekeeper since 2019, Rebellion Timepieces accompanies the competitors in the world’s most prestigious endurance race from start to finish. Just like in previous editions, a one-of-a-kind limited series was showcased a few hours before the 46th Dakar kicked off.

Just like all Rebellion Timepieces’ creations, the Predator 2.0 3 Hands Dakar 2024 embraces powerful design. On its aweinspiring, honeycomb-patterned dial, XLsized numerals 9 and 12 reign supreme with their sandy shade. This same vibrant colour graces the stylized markers, the date aperture and the trio of hour, minute and second hands, as well as the minute tracker running round the flange. This gold-onblack composition, bedecked with the Dakar logo, nestles in a 48mm carbon case, waterproof to depths of 50 metres.

Carbon fibre, the must-ofall-musts in developing and finetuning high-performance sports prototypes cut out to conquer, flaunts first-class mechanical properties for watchmaking: lightness and incredible hardness. This multi-layer, resin-coated fabric is also armed with a weight/resistance

ratio beyond compare. What’s more, this composite material, 75% lighter than steel and 10 times more resistant, accentuates the watch’s character with its highly-original striated pattern that brings out impressive design. Thanks to all its assets, carbon has become Rebellion Timepieces’ high-tech and stylistic signature by diffusing no-compromise creation into its masterpieces.

As such, the Predator 2.0 3 Hands Dakar 2024 dazzles with superlative manufacturing quality, centre staged through its sculptural 48mm-diameter case. This state-of-the-art material’s random pattern exalts the watch’s exclusive identity. And, to underpin its sporty look even more, this edition comes complete with a Cordura® textile strap whose colour matches the tones that fashion Dakar’s desert panoramas. All the time data, including the date, is accurately driven by a Swiss Made calibre. This self-winding movement delivers a power reserve of 48 hours when the timepiece isn’t being worn. The honeycomb-forged, twirling and whirling oscillating weight catches the eye through the iconic Dakar logodecorated sapphire-crystal caseback.

BEAUTY DIGGER CLINIC MAYFAIR

Located on South Molton Street in Mayfair, Beauty Digger Aesthetics Clinic is a convenient, luxurious private clinic that specialises in non-invasive, aesthetic procedures.

Led by Dr Alexa Balan, a GDC registered dentist, Beauty Digger aims to capture and enhance client's inner beauty.

Having graduated in Romania in 2019 and with a passion for aesthetic medicine, Dr Balan spent two years working in Monaco, honing her skills alongside experienced doctors and mastering the latest advancements in her respective fields.

Now based in London, she now brings her expertise to her wealth of valued and loyal customers in the capital.

With a keen eye on the latest procedures and new products in the market, not only does Dr Balan offer highly competitively priced treatments, she also offers sage advice to clients - never carrying out any work she believes won't be beneficial. Warm and welcoming, you instantly feel at ease in her presence, with her knowledge in the field extremely evident.

After an initial consultation, Dr Balan can draw up a treatment plan to target clients individual needs. Alongside precision dermal fillers, and advanced skin rejuvenation techniques, other state of the art procedures include Dermalux LED Therapy, Mesotherapy, fat dissolving, Profilo, B12 injections, teeth

whitening and much more.

Each procedure is designed to achieve subtle yet transformative results, ensuring you radiate confidence and vitality without the need for surgery. One treatment in particular designed to rejuvenate skin and boost hydration is Restylane Vital and Vital Light Skin Boosters.

These skin boosters are designed specifically for more mature or sun-damaged skin and can be used to treat the face, hands, neck and décolletage by boosting the skin hydration and increasing its smoothness, elasticity and firmness with natural looking results. Containing lidocaine, a powerful anaesthetic, for a more comfortable injection, numbing cream is applied before precise injections into the targeted area begin.

Formulated with hyaluronic acid and compared to the filler, Restylane Vital and Vital Light is cross-linked meaning it uses a clever dosage to give just the right amount for the area and doesn't move or migrate. Helping to restore volume, it doesn't give you any volume, and instead helps to restore the skin firmness, hydration, luminosity, glow and texture. As most of the skin treatments, it requires multiple sessions, so it is recommended to have 2-3 sessions 4 weeks apart, and then for maintenance every 3 months 1 session, or 6 months 2 sessions.

A YEAR FOR YACHTING

World leaders in the yacht industry, Heesen Yachts are on track to match their successful delivery of four yachts in 2023 with a further four to be delivered this year. A staggering 13 yachts are currently under construction at the Dutch shipyard, so there's plenty more to come.

HEESEN YACHTS

PROJECT JADE

Having delivered an impressive four yachts in 2023, worldleading Dutch shipyard Heesen Yachts have started 2024 as they finished last year with an incredible thirteen yachts under construction. Project Jade, Project Orion, Project Serena and Project Akira are all set to launch this year matching last year's success.

The global superyacht fleet continues to grow, with more superyachts worldwide than at any other time in history - enjoying a 14.5% increase in 2023 - but geopolitical factors are seeing the market flatten after the post-pandemic surge in demand. However, Heesen’s robust business model places it in a strong position, and there is still demand for quality-built yachts, especially from the United States - which accounts for 50% of the brand's clientele.

This year marks a new era for Heesen, with Neils Vassen taking over the helm, having been appointed CEO in November last year. Formerly CFO for more than a decade, his company expertise and commitment to Dutch craftmanship, make for an exciting new

chapter for the brand.

Speaking on this Niels states; "I am excited to contribute to the future successes of our shipyard, which is renowned for building ultra-technological superyachts. We are committed to investing in research and development to ensure that we continue to deliver the most innovative and reliable products to our clients."

Last year saw the successful delivery of three full custom yachts: 80-metre Genesis - the world’s largest and fastest all-aluminium motoryacht with conventional propeller propulsion system; the 67-metre Sparta - equipped with a Japanese inspired wellness area; and the 69-metre Ultra G - designed with the owner’s dog in mind. These three yachts - each beautifully showcasing the individuality of their owners - served as opportunities for Heesen’s skilled

engineers and build team to demonstrate the shipyard’s expertise and product quality.

The 55-metre Reliance, the first with interiors by Luca Dini Design & Architecture was also delivered last year completing the 2023 line-up.

This year, the first set to leave the shipyard is Project Jade. An all-aluminium, fast-cruising yacht, Jade is powered by green ocean engines that aims to bring guests closer to the remote and shallow bays that are typically off-limits to yachts. With a curvy, sporty exterior crafted by Omega Architects, she will be sure to make a mark on the water.

Its low drag and ultra-efficient hull design makes Jade comfortable in rough seas yet perfect for cruising shallow waters,

ideal for both island hopping and longer passages.

An elevated aft deck holds a large whirlpool with sunpads for relaxing afternoons and evenings on the water while a full height multi-purpose tender garage and beach club - which comprises a fold-down transom platform for easy access to the water when at anchor - affords an extensive range of daytime activities to enjoy.

A downward pointing bow provides a good line of sight to the water from the bridge, and helps to accentuate Jade’s long, sleek profile. And inside, the full-beam owner’s stateroom, two double guest suites and two twin guest suites deliver unrivaled accommodation. In honour of her name, her interior boasts a cool and elegant design by Christian Gatto with bold pops of jade throughout.

4 Large Baking Potatoes | 75g Sour Cream | 100g Butter | 50g Double Cream

200g Chorizo (Peeled and Diced) | 1 Diced Onion | 1 Clove Garlic | 1 Teaspoon Tomato Puree | 40g Brown Sugar | 1 Shot of Coffee | 150g Maple Syrup or Honey | 100g Blitzed Tinned Tomatoes

1 Bunch Chives (Finely Sliced to Garnish)

CHORIZO JAM

This recipe can be made well in advance and kept in your fridge ready to use in many more recipes.

Heat up a large pan with oil, add in the diced chorizo and sweat for 5 minutes on a medium heat to release all the natural oils, add in the onions and garlic and cook for further 2 minutes.

Stir in the tomato puree and cook out for 2 minutes, then add in the sugar, deglaze the pan next with the shot of coffee and maple syrup and reduce.

Mix in the tinned tomatoes and cook out for 10-15 minutes until the mixture reaches a jammy consistency. Leave to cool then place in an air tight container and fridge ready to use whenever needed.

Baked Potato with Chorizo

From Essex roots to the future of The Dorchester, Tom Booton heralds the next kitchen generation, blazing into our lives with a brilliant new angle on modern British dining. The Grill is a space for people to come and experience the best of British food, with a fresh new take. Guests will enjoy this unique experience from the minute they walk through the door.

BAKED POTATO

Preheat an oven to 170°C, wash your potatoes well and dry with a tea towel. Pierce your potatoes really well with a fork. Rub olive oil and salt on to them and place on a tray and in to the oven. You don’t need to wrap them in tin foil, I find that makes the skin and inside soggy, instead of crispy and fluffy. These will take 50-55 minute’s to cook through.

When ready, remove from the oven and leave to slightly cool for 5 minute’s. Cut the top of the potato off so it stands straight and carefully start to scoop out the inside ready to refill it later on. Important here you don’t rip the potatoes and keep a natural shape. Place the potato skins back in the oven for 3-5 minutes until golden brown and crispy, this can also be done in a fryer for extra flavour. With the potato, add the plain mash into a pan and on the heat start to mash with the butter and cream to break it down. Once this has all come together pass through a fine sieve into another pan to get an even smoother mash potato. Then to finish, add in the sour cream, if it’s still too dry you can always add a touch of milk to get it just right.

TO PLATE

Re heat your jam in a pan until hot. With your warm potato skins, add in the chorizo jam until ¾ full then carefully fill up the rest with your sour cream mash potato. At this point you could add some grated cheese and place under a hot grill for 2-3 minutes to give the skin a next level touch.

When ready sprinkle over the chopped chives and enjoy!

Located just a stone's throw form Harrods, new opening Clap Restaurant is the home of sensory Japanese dining.

Following extensive and consistent success with three thriving restaurants based across the Middle East, led by the flagship Clap Dubai, and a reputation renowned by the Michelin Guide. Clap London's new home is the result of an epic transformation of a refurbished tube station into a sprawling, three-level culinary destination.

The ground floor is currently being transformed into a chic cafe which is set to open later this year, and further up on the sixth floor lies the restaurant itself. Critically acclaimed Japanese designer and founder of Studio Glitt, Noriyoshi Muramatsu has designed a vibrant space that focuses on a large open kitchen with live sushi and robata displays.

Injecting a fresh concept from abroad, Clap is leading the charge in the renaissance of the Knightsbridge area. At the helm of the kitchen is Culinary Director Chef Renald Epie, a highly accomplished French culinary expert boasting an impressive career spanning over 25 years. Chef Renald has drawn upon the traditions and flavours of Japan to curate an extensive menu that seamlessly blends with his background and training, creating an enticing array of dishes that showcase his unique take on modern Japanese cuisine.

Delectable zensai (bites) of Wagyu beef tartare and Biwa caviar; and black cod with foie gras, citrus miso and fried kadaifi are followed by hajimera (starters) of Clap salad with dried miso and truffle; and Wagyu beef and foie gras gyoza and truffle teriyaki.

Diners can choose from the finest selection of nigiri and sashimi as well as signature rolls and nama (raw) dishes including wonderfully fresh sea bass and mango ceviche; pink prawn ceviche; and Hokkaido scallop tiradito.

Signature rolls include soft shell crab; lobster tempura; spicy tuna maki; and the crazy California - with crab, avocado, and wasabi mayo.

Meinkōsu (main courses) of baby back pork ribs with homemade hoisin; marinated lamb rack with Clap's kimchi; and pistachio crusted baby chicken with yuzu and daikon round up the menu. Along with some fine cuts of Australian Wagyu, and hearty sides of quinoa risotto with yuzu truffle dressing and Kizami wasabi mashed potato.

There's also a dedicated vegetarian menu boasting the likes of Asparagus tempura rolls; grilled silken tofu with daikon oroshi; and charred cauliflower with soy aioli and toasted panko crumbs.

For those thinking there is too much to choose from, we don't blame you, and that is why Clap also offers an Omakase menu with Omakase meaning “I leave it up to you” in Japanese. This is a great way to experience the best of Clap and to try a number of signature dishes that the brand is renowned for.

An exclusive rooftop bar and lounge can be found on the seventh floor, boasting an indoor and outdoor terrace with 360 views of central London. An no-brainer when it comes to drinks post-dinner, the atmospheric rooftop is reminiscent of Tokyo's nightspots, offering great music and stylish design accents.

Specialising in imaginative cocktails designed to awaken the senses, Clap has collaborated with the world’s best bars to showcase the eclectic side of modern Japanese drinking. Concoctions range from the smokey and complex Tokashi-Gawa (truffle, tequila, mezcal, lapsang souchong, oabika, pickled radish, passionfruit infusion, jasmine, dash of pimento dram) to the silky and umami of Detective Conan (shochu, pisco, yuzu juice, cascara tea, grapefruit cordial, clarified milk, maraschino, blue spirulina), offering something for every palate.

Founded by Addmind, a dynamic privately owned hospitality group, with an international portfolio of restaurants, lounges, beach clubs, and vibrant venues. Clap is a recognised culinary powerhouse, having been honoured with numerous prestigious accolades, as well as being featured by the Michelin Guide in 2022 and 2023. Addmind also count the much-loved London venues of Sucre and Alma Bar as part of their stable.

NATIONAL FRAGRANCE WEEK

National Fragrance Week is right around the corner, so there is no better time to appreciate all things aromas than now. Taking place from March 18 - 24, National Fragrance Week aims to celebrate the power of scent, and with perfumes, flowers, and candles typically springing to mind, The Champagne Bureau UK* wanted to highlight the way in which the aromas associated with Champagne through scent, help to enhance the overall tasting experience.

The Champagne Bureau UK have put together a guide to help better understand the relationship between Champagne and aroma, as well as an insight into the various processes that lead to the production of these aromas.

An ‘aroma’ can be defined as ‘a distinctive, typically pleasant smell.’ In the context of Champagne, these aromas can range from floral and fruity to woody and nutty, however, the exact aromas associated with the sparkling wine will depend on both grape variety and style.

There are three main grape varieties used in the production of Champagne, all of which lead to the creation of different scent profiles. The most commonly used varieties in the designation are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Meunier. Chardonnay brings a wonderful freshness to Champagne, yielding delicately fragrant wines with floral, citrus, and sometimes mineral notes. Pinot Noir endows wines with body, punch, and structure. This creates distinctive aromas of red fruits, such as cherries, raspberries, and strawberries, as well as flowers, such as roses and violets. Meunier produces supple, fruity wines, with distinctive aromas of yellow fruits, namely peach, apricots, and mandarin. The other four grape varieties are Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Petit Meslier and Arbane.

In general, the aromas associated with Champagne are also largely dependent on the style of the wine itself. For example, a Non-Vintage Champagne Brut has a more complex scent profile, comprised of floral, (white flowers, lime blossom, rose, and violet), fruity, (citrus, red, and yellow fruits), spicy, (cinnamon, vanilla, and

pepper), and brioche notes. Blanc de Blancs possesses similar floral and fruity notes, with an addition of minerality expressed in the form of chalky aromas.

With regards to a Blanc de Noirs, citrus, red, or yellow fruits, whether fresh or candied, may come to the fore. Not only this, but floral and spicy notes (similar to those associated with Non-Vintage Champagne Brut) may also be noted. Champagne Demi-sec to Doux also possesses a spicy and fruity aroma profile. Finally, Champagne Rosé has a scent profile, of toasted (bread, biscotti) and roasted (coffee, cocoa) aromas.

Maturation also affects the scent profile of

Champagne. After the second fermentation stage, the maturation process begins. During this time, constant protection from the light and a steady temperature of around 12 degrees Celsius are crucial for ensuring the best aging conditions. All Champagnes must spend at least 15 months maturing before release, whilst Vintage cuvées will spend three years in the cellar, at the very least. Vintage Champagnes tend to have greater character, with a complex scent profile made up of more pronounced aromas, such as gingerbread, dried fruit, coffee and cocoa or fruit aromas, such as citrus, red, and yellow fruits, as well as notes of vanilla, pepper, and cinnamon.

PERFORMANCE

The pinnacle of performance and design for the Audi brand, their iconic RS 6 pushes the boundaries further than ever before with a limited series run of the new RS 6 GT. Even more athletic than its already agile production counterpart, this is a head turner like no other.

More powerful and faster than any RS 6 to date - with the exception of the latest GT venture - the latest RS 6 Avant performance is bursting with extras that sharpen the models’ appearance and make for an even more emotive driving experience.

At Audi, ‘performance’ means more power. For example, larger turbochargers and an increase in boost pressure from 2.4 to 2.6 bar in the 4.0-litre V8 biturbo TFSI engine that the RS 6 Avant performance boasts allows an increase of 30PS in engine power and 50Nm more torque compared to the previous versions. This means a total increase in power from 600PS to 630PS and in maximum torque from 800Nm to 850Nm. The performance model sprints from 0-62mph in 3.4 seconds, 0.2 seconds faster than the outgoing RS 6 base versions.

However, less is sometimes more. Reduced insulation between the engine compartment, the interior, and the rear of the vehicle ensures the performance variant will thrill you with an exciting, next-level sound experience - the reduction also makes the car eight kilograms lighter.

The 'performance' level RS 6 is now the standard in the UK market. As a result, there has been an uplift in the level of standard equipment across the range over the current offering. The entry performance models now benefit from a Bang & Olufsen Premium Sound System with 3D sound, Park Assist Pack with park assist plus, Head-up Display, 360-degree cameras and 22-inch wheels in matt grey. Visually, the exterior style package in matt grey is also now standard, while the RS sport exhaust comes finished in gloss black, along with the Audi rings and badges. The RS design package in either red, blue or grey is now standard along with an Alcantara flat bottom steering wheel. The top speed limit has also increased to 174mph.

Stepping up, the performance Carbon Black brings 22-inch wheels in matt black, high-performance Continental Sport Contact 7 285/30 tyres, matt carbon styling and mirror housing, and Dinamica headlining. Carbon Vorsprung models now benefit from Night Vision assistant and carbon twill inlays on top of the already generous specification.

The latest RS 6 Avant performance rolls off the line on standard 22-inch, matt grey alloy wheels with 285/30 R22 section tyres. Performance Carbon Black and performance Carbon Vorsprung editions come as standard with 22-inch lightweight wheels finished in matt black. Inspired by motorsport, the airy 5-Y spoke design aids brake cooling and the lighter rims are manufactured in a hightech forging-milling process. The new lightweight wheel is around five kilograms lighter than the 22-inch aluminium wheel on the current RS 6 Avant - this 20kg weight reduction in unsprung masses improves the throttle response.

YOUR DRIVE

The Audi drive select dynamic handling system lets the driver control the vehicle’s character. Six profiles are available: efficiency, comfort, auto, dynamic, as well as two customizable RS-specific RS1 and RS2 modes.

But experience of the driving modes in the performance models is much more unique. For example, the coasting mode now only activates automatically in the efficiency profile, which means in speed ranges up to 99mph, it switches off the combustion engine and coasts with no fuel consumption or drag torque from the engine. Additionally, fine-tuning to the engine control unit software makes for tighter load changes in S mode when the “dynamic” drive select mode or driving mode S is active. The updated software in the transmission control unit makes for faster shifting times and a noticeably increased spread between the various driving modes.

The RS Dynamic Package is standard equipment in the new performance models. This includes the increase in maximum speed to 174mph, dynamic all-wheel steering (the RS-specific software update helps the driver with active steering corrections on the front and rear axles), and the quattro sport differential on the rear axle.

The RS Dynamics Package plus is also available as an option, which in addition to the RS Dynamics Package, raises the top speed to 189mph and includes an RS ceramic brake system. Customers can order the calipers in grey, red, or blue and discs measure a whopping 440 mm (front) and 370 mm (rear). The RS ceramic brake system weighs a total of approximately 34kg less

audi.co.uk

than its steel counterpart for a reduction of the unsprung masses.

In the interior, the familiar RS design packages in grey and red have been expanded to include the colour blue. The steering wheel rim in Alcantra black features contrasting stitching in Mercato blue, whilst the floor mats, the side of the centre console, and the selector lever cuff also come with blue contrasting stitching. The seat belts are full-surface ocean blue with decorative inlays in a carbon twill structure with optional blue accents. The selector lever knob and the side of the centre console are made with Dinamica microfiber, which consists of around 45 percent recycled PET fibres and the sports seats feature high-quality Valcona leather upholstery perforated with honeycomb stitching with contrasting stitching in Mercato blue. Another distinguishing feature is an entrance LED in the front doors that projects the lettering “RS performance” onto the ground next to the car.

On Carbon Black specification and above, customers benefit from RS design packages in the three available colour variants with optional additional features: door armrests and a centre armrest in Dinamica microfiber. An added benefit of this equipment variant is the seat centre panel with a grey, red, or blue inlay, whilst the customer’s chosen colour shows through the perforated sports seats and the seat backs feature RS embossing in matching colours.

The displays of the standard 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit plus offer new features including a blinking shift indicator in manual transmission mode which changes the rpm display from green to yellow to red, blinking in a manner identical to that used in

AUDI RS 6

motorsport, to indicate the optimal time to change gears. Plus, Launch Control, fully exploits the acceleration potential of the RS 6 Avant performance by signalling the ideal moment to accelerate off the line, with new traffic light icons.

The RS 6 Avant performance in the C8 generation continues Audi’s long-standing sport strategy of plus and performance models. It all began with the RS 6 Avant Plus in the C5 generation, shortly before the series was discontinued in 2004, quattro GmbH (now Audi Sport GmbH) launched a special limited series of 999 units with a subtle upgrade in power. The engine power climbed by 30PS to 480PS and the model bore the distinction of being the first Audi to officially go faster than 155mph fastest sport wagon. Without the engine control unit, it reached a top speed of more than 186mph.

The plus variant in the C6 generation hit the market in 2008 and was limited to 500 units. Unlike its predecessor, it did not feature any additional power; the V10 kept its 580PS. But Audi limited the top speed of the special Avant and Sedan to 188mph; the only faster vehicle at the time was the R8.

In the C7 generation, “plus” became “performance” - the Audi RS 6 Avant performance rolled off the line in 2016, with a slightly tweaked engine, the power rose to 605PS, 45PS more than in the base model. The overboost function increased briefly to 750Nm in

“dynamic” driving mode and depending on equipment, the speed was limited at 155, 174 or 189mph.

Striving ever more for improved performance, the latest iteration is a true performance vehicle for the road that needs to be experienced to be fully appreciated.

The new Audi RS 6 Avant GT is the pinnacle of the model series. The limited-run, special edition is packed with exclusive exterior and interior details. An impressive pass-through roof edge spoiler, redefined diffuser, and 22-inch wheels in a distinctive design underscore its top position as the ultimate RS 6 Avant. The interior features high-quality bucket seats, a bespoke colour combination, and individual numbering in the centre console. Lightweight adjustable coilover suspension, unique to the RS

6 Avant GT, and a reworked quattro sport differential on the rear axle sharpen the driving experience. The twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre TFSI V8 engine has an output 630PS and delivers 850Nm of torque from 2,300 to 4,500rpm. Priced at £176,975, first customer deliveries of the 60 UK-bound units will start in the second quarter of this year.

The idea of the Audi RS 6 Avant GT goes back to the apprentice project RS 6 GTO concept from 2020. Twelve apprentices learning to

YOUR DRIVE

work as bodywork and vehicle construction mechanics, automotive mechanics, automotive painters, and tooling mechanics worked on the project for six months with the support of Audi Design. They took most of their inspiration from the legendary Audi 90 quattro IMSA GTO race car from 1989. The result shows the range of ways in which young talents can contribute to the company even during their apprenticeship.

Vertical blades in the front apron, a new intake grille, and a powerful front splitter integrated into the bumper enhance the sharpened look. For the first time, Audi Sport GmbH is not only using a fully redesigned bonnet but is also manufacturing it from carbon fiber. The one-of-akind finish makes the redesigned bonnet a real eye-catcher, and it is impressively framed by the colour of the body. Integrated air outlets behind the large 22-inch wheels reduce air pressure in the wheel arch and improve brake cooling. Like the bonnet, the arches housing the large wheels are made entirely of carbon fibre for the first time - a highlight on the vehicle itself as well as for Audi Production.

The side profile is defined by inserts in the side skirts, exterior mirror covers in glossy carbon, and the 22-inch wheels in the six-spoke design made exclusively for the RS 6 Avant GT. At the rear, the special edition impresses with black “RS 6 GT” lettering, a tailgate specially adapted to the design with a visually lowered loading edge, a functional diffuser with a

vertically centred reflector that makes the car appear even wider, and a distinctive double wing inspired by motorsport. The latter was taken almost 1:1 from the apprentices’ concept car. For the first time in the history of the RS 6 Avant, the roof rails have been removed for an even flatter, sportier silhouette.

The new RS 6 Avant GT has a power output of 630PS and a maximum torque figure of 850Nm. Against the stopwatch, it hits 0-62 mph in 3.3 seconds, 0-124mph in 10.5 seconds, and can hit a top speed of 190 mph. Stopping power is provided by the RS ceramic brake system as standard.

To further distinguish the special edition from other RS models, the quattro sport differential on the rear axle has been specially tuned for the RS 6 Avant GT. The new parameters focus on greater agility and rear bias in “dynamic” driving mode. Customers benefit from sporty, neutral, and highly precise handling. For the first time, and only for the RS 6 Avant GT, adjustable coilover suspension comes as standard. A higher spring rate, triple-adjustable dampers, and stiffer stabilisers (30 per cent stiffer at the front and 80 per cent at the rear) ensure less body roll, which once again significantly increases the fun factor. The necessary tools and instructions for making individual adjustments are also on board.

LAND ROVER SERIES IIA

Series Land Rover's are a thing of legend. Forever cementing a place in the automotive history books, the Land Rover Series I, II and III, built from 1948 until 1985 were the first mass-produced

four-wheel drive cars with doors, and hard roof available to the public. Their box-welded frame and rust-free aluminium alloy bodies earned them a following of icon proportions which remains to this day.

Thanks to this construction method, many Series Land Rovers are still in use today including the iconic Series IIA. Body configurations of the Series II available from the factory ranged from a short-wheelbase softtop to the top-of-the-line five-door station wagon.

This series is often considered the most hardy of the three and is regularly regarded as 'the' Land Rover thanks to its use in numerous film and tv productions. The cars desirability can be evidenced by its production and sales figures which reached a peak of over 60,000 a year at the end of the 1960's while the Defender (another iconic vehicle from the marque) has experienced sales of around 25,000 since the 90's.

This example from 1964 is delivered in the shortwheelbase soft-top guise finished in grey coachwork with black interior and beige soft top and has enjoyed a full restoration by marque specialists with invoices to show all of the works carried out.

It is a lovely example of a classice British icon that can only be appreciated in person.

2023 marked another record year for the Savills auction team with the hammer coming down on over £570m worth of property. We sold over 1,600 properties at auction - up 50% on 2022 - and the momentum has yet to slow as we embark on a new year. This year we are holding more sales than ever before, with two having already taken place – raising in excess of £70m – and a further 14 are planned throughout the rest of 2024.

Whether you’re an investor seeking to add to your portfolio, an owner occupier looking to buy a new home or perhaps you’re simply intrigued by the opportunity to buy something unique or quirky, the breadth of property on offer at auction means there really is something for everyone.

All of our sales are held online via a live-streamed virtual auction room, giving buyers a level playing field when it comes to purchasing their next property. The auction process also provides buyers and owners the opportunity to purchase or sell quickly without counter offers, gazumping or long chains coming into play.

There’s no doubt that there’s a thrill and adrenaline rush attached to buying a property at auction but what are the steps to get there? To help understand the process of buying at auction, here’s a step by step guide for would be bidders:

1. Sign up to receive alerts for the release of Savills latest Auction catalogues: Catalogues are published two weeks before each auction is scheduled to take place and are available to view online. Preliminary lots will be available to view prior to this, though it’s important to remember that these are subject to change.

2. Register to bid: The publication of the auction catalogue marks the point at which buyers

BUYING A PROPERTY AT AUCTION: HOW TO DO IT

are able to register to bid at an upcoming auction. Registration can be undertaken up until the day before the auction takes place. You will need to provide the details of all bidders/buyers/deposit payers, identification documents and solicitor’s details. Once registered, you will also be able to book viewing time slots, access legal documents, subscribe to email alerts and create a personalised watch list and notifications.

3. Obtain the legal pack: Before the auction, it is important to obtain the legal pack, which you can download from our website. We’d also recommend you get a solicitor to check it. If you require a survey, get your surveyor to contact the auctioneers directly to arrange access. Finance services are also available in advance of the auction.

Cross-checking the catalogue with the addendum information is important as it will form part of the contract. A copy of the addendum will be available on the day of the auction.

4. Have your financing in place: Without finance arrangements in place, you will be unable to bid on any properties. Following payment of the deposit on the day, you will usually have to pay the final balance 28 days later. If a buyer isn’t purchasing in cash, they will often look to a specialist broker with experience in arranging finance for buying at auction. The broker will usually secure a mortgage in principle in advance though occasionally they may arrange it after the deposit has been paid and within 28 days.

In the ever-evolving world of interior design, where trends come and go on a daily basis it seems, one new design ‘theory’ is making a bold statement - literally. The viral 'Unexpected Red' theory, as coined by Brooklyn-based interior designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon, challenges traditional norms by encouraging the inclusion of red into any space, regardless of its compatibility. This audacious approach suggests we can throw a red cushion at a room and instantly elevate the look.

The 'unexpected red' theory basically contends that adding anything that's red, big or small, to a room where it doesn't match at all, automatically makes it look better. Simon's notion reflects a departure from conventional design principles, challenging the belief that harmony and cohesion are the only paths to aesthetic perfection.

THE BOLD ELEGANCE OF 'UNEXPECTED RED' IN HIGH-END INTERIOR DESIGN

An Uplifting Device

Whilst I agree that red can bring an instant uplift in energy and a pop of ‘ooh that’s interesting’ to a scheme, it’s important not to dismiss the importance of the hue's chromatic value against other elements in the room scheme. The specific shade of red plays a crucial role in determining its impact. One must be mindful of the room's existing colour palette, ensuring that the red elements harmonise rather than clash.

Red, being a vibrant and attention-grabbing colour, unquestionably draws the eye and creates a grounding focal point in any space. Think of it like an extrovert taking centre stage and allowing the introverts to relax knowing the conversation has been taken care of! However, it’s use requires careful application to avoid overwhelming the overall design.

It’s my belief that red elements should ideally be one of the bestdesigned/most expensive items in the scheme if they are to take centre stage. This approach ensures that they seamlessly integrate with the luxurious aesthetic of high-end interiors, elevating the space rather than becoming the ‘red bus in a black and white’ picture vibe.

The Energetic Nature of Red

Beyond its visual impact, the choice of red in interior design is deeply rooted in psychology and colour theory. Red demands more energy from the eyes to process, subtly increasing the heartbeat and evoking a sense of passion and intensity. This phenomenon contributes to red being associated with strong emotions, making it a powerful tool in the hands of designers.

However, this energy-demanding quality also comes with a cautionary note. The use of red in excess may create an overwhelming atmosphere, inducing feelings of hunger and anxiety. Embracing the 'Unexpected Red' theory must strike a delicate balance, using the colour strategically to evoke the desired emotions without overwhelming the senses.

A Timeless Technique or a Resurgence?

Whilst the theory may seem revolutionary, its essence resonates with a design principle that has been utilised by avant-garde designers for decades. The use of red to break free from design conventions is not entirely new, however, its resurgence in popularity suggests a departure from the muted and neutral tones that have dominated recent design trends. I think the return of warmer neutrals has paved the way for its return. Grey and black are not a good foil for red giving ‘Playboy Mansion’ vibes rather

than a sophisticated colour palette. Red, having been out of favour for some time, is now reclaiming its status as a bold and luxurious choice for interior spaces. Designers are rediscovering the allure of this passionate hue, employing it to inject drama, vibrancy, and a touch of the unexpected into their creations.

Give it a go

The joy of this theory is that even the smallest red element can have a transformational effect so try it with a red picture frame or small ornament, or paint a door or other architectural element. Be sure to find a hue that works in the room. A fire-engine red may well be too much in a room with antique furniture where an earthy red would be a better choice.

Redefining Interiors

In the world of high-end interiors, the 'Unexpected Red' theory offers a refreshing departure from the predictable. It’s success lies in the skillful balance between audacity and restraint ensuring that the chosen red elements harmonise with the existing palette whilst making a bold statement. The resurgence of red in interior design is not merely a fleeting trend but a timeless technique that celebrates the vibrancy and passion of this bold hue.

Whether a resurgence or a revolution, one thing is certain, when used with creativity and discernment, has the power to transform any space into an elegant masterpiece.
