Are you excited as I am?

F

rom a very young age, I’ve always had an interest in magazines. Every month I’d go to Easons and buy the newest issue of Kiss magazine. It was my favourite magazine when I was younger and I picked up so many beauty tips from reading them non stop. Its so great to be able to give that back now, by sharing my tips with you too. I started working with Karolina as part of my work experience for my University course. By creating this magazine with Karolina, it has really given me the experience I need to become a graphic designer once I finish college. Having started here back in June, I’ve already learned so much about the magazine industry. I’ve learned that I love creating my own pages about all the things I love. It is such a fantastic feeling being able to use my knowledge of beauty and fashion to help others. I’ve learned that creating a magazine from scratch isn’t always smooth sailing either. The weeks coming up to deadlines can be intense, trying to get everything finalized and having to pick and choose what pages will be most useful for each issue is hard. The entire experience has been such a great journey for me. I’d like to thank Karolina for being so welcoming. She has really given me the chance to really get involved in all aspects of the magazine. This experience has given me the chance to grow and develop, learning more and more everyday about my capabilities in the magazine industry. Most importantly it has made me realize that this is most certainly the industry I want to go into once I’m finished college and I just cant wait to start!

This issue has been super exiting to create as its all centered around autumn and of course Halloween! We have step-by-step nail pages, including some featured Halloween and autumn designs just for you. The black swan makeup tutorial for this Halloween is a must see! We have numerous beauty pages to offer, including beauty best buys, giving you the most popular makeup brands out there right now. If your more of a DIY person, then we have an organic skin exfoliator page that gives you all the tips you need to have soft, soothe skin with barely any damage to your wallet. We have loads more fantastic articles to offer you this issue. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do!

Kelly Angley, Junior Editor.

Great Lengths Hair Extensions. Celebrities can’t leave their house without extensions so why should we??? Whether I want to add colour, volume, texture or length with Great Lengths I have been able to get the hair I have always dreamed of. I love being able to have fun with my hair (keeping up with the latest trends) while protecting it at the same time and best of all it holds my style for the whole day.

Herra Hair Protector. I always have a bottle of Herra Hair Protector in my bag. I am passionate about using beauty products that protect but also makes me feel amazing. It has a delicious scent that is subtle but still attention grabbing.

Shellac Nails. Keeping my nails tidy is very important to me. I book in for a Shellac manicure every 2 weeks, as I have too little patience for chipping nails. Once you go Shellac, you’ll never go back.

Vaseline. As the weather starts getting colder, my lips naturally become dry. I am constantly applying Vaseline as it is so long lasting and hydrating. I especially love the Rose Lips edition.

Great Lengths Travel Brush. This soft bristled brush is the perfect product to grab when you’re running out the door! It smoothes, detangles and makes my hair shine—without creating any static. And........ it’s the perfect size for my handbag.

Noelle O’ Connor Noelle O’Connor, first burst onto our scenes in 2010 via RTE’s Dragon’s Den Programme where she debuted her TanOrganic products. The brand is now a worldwide smash with millions loving this natural and organic formula.

1 2

Noelle’s Top 5 Beauty Products SPF - Protection from the sun’s harmful UV rays is essential to me and I use it every day, regardless of the weather. The sun’s rays can cause damage to the skin leading to premature ageing, fine lines and wrinkles while also allowing a leathery texture of the skin to appear after time. Not only this, it is one of the main causes of skin cancer. TanOrganic Tanning Oil - I love a golden colour to my skin and what better product than something I created myself! I absolutely love TanOrganic’s self-tanning oil as it will allows my skin to achieve a natural looking glow. Its unique blend of 8 plant oils and ultra moisturising ingredients also keeps my skin hydrated, smooth and supple.

Anita James Top Irish Beauty blogger and self confessed nail aficionado Anita James, recently decdied to take theplunge and set up Ireland’s first indie nail polish brand Precious Polish. Gaining a cult folloing form theose brauty junkies in the know, all of Anita’s polishes are 5 free (DPB Free, Formaldehyde Free, Formaldehyde Resin Free, Toluene Free and Camphor Free).

A good handcream. I am recently loving La Roche Posay Lipikar Hands, it’s not to greasy and soaks in quite quickly. After a few days use, the dry skin on my hands was nearly gone.

3 4 5

GloMinerals Camouflage: GloMinerals Camouflage is an always an essential part of my beauty routine. It conceals every type of blemish for a flawless looking finish.

Gyptian Magic Multi Purpose Cream: This is an all-natural skin cream made from natures most moisturising and healing ingredients that achieves miraculous results. It can treat everything from cuts, burns, scars, bruises, stretch marks to treating rashes dry, chapped skin and more.

Hydration Mist: This product is essential especially in dry climates. Just a spritz instantly hydrates the skin while its blend of anti oxidants holds anti-ageing effects. I especially love the Glo Minerals Hydration mist.

3 4 5

A Nail File because there is nothing worse when you are out and a nail breaks.

Whatever nail polish I am wearing, for special occasions, I always pop it in my handbag in case it chips and my new Precious Polish can be customised to the customers needs.

A powder foundation to top up my makeup if I have a long day in work or at an event.

A decent lipbalm. Winter can cause havoc on lips making them dry and cracked. I use Blistex relief cream. It doesn’t have a pleasant flavour but definitely helps lips.

AUTUMN TREE Step By Step

A

utumn is fast approaching and I thought it'd be nice to create something seasonal on my nails, so today I'm going to show you how you can recreate this autumn tree nail art look.

By Claire Metcalfe www.nuthinbutanailthing.com/

What you need: A white polish Four shades of red/orange polish Top coat Black nail art pen (If you don’t have one, black polish and a thin brush or dotting tool will be sufficient) Tweezers Cheap make up sponge ripped into some small pieces

1

First, start by painting your nails a white base colour and let this dry.

14

2 3 4 5

Start with your lightest orange shade and lightly sponge on to your nails. Do this using your small piece of ripped up make up sponge and hold this with the tweezers so you can sponge this on neater.

Do the same with your next darker red/orange polish. Don’t sponge on too much, just a light smattering on each nail so that the colour underneath still shows through.

Continue until you have used all four of your colours and have a nice mixture of red/ orange sponged on for your tree.

Let this dry and then use your black nail art pen to draw on the trunk of your tree.

15

16

6

Add in a few branches for your tree. I’ve only added a few to keep this simple, but if you were feeling adventurous you could add in lots more really small branches for detail.

7

Add a thin black tip to your nail. This doesn’t need to be straight or neat, it’s to show the ground by the tree so it can be a bit wobbly.

8

Add a thin black tip to your nail. This doesn’t need to be straight or neat, it’s to show the ground by the tree so it can be a bit wobbly.

Embrace YOUR FLAWS

By Niamh Webborou

Niamh Webborou, our 18-year old feature writer tells us about the frustration among young girls when doing shopping. Do you feel the same way?

Today in our modern society, young girls find it hard to be confident within themselves or love the way they are. Between celebrities, media, fashion and peers, it is no wonder girls are struggling more and more to be happy with the person they are. There is a set expectation today that makes young girls feel that they have to look a certain way. Is this right? I don’t think so. Not every girl is going to look like a Victoria Secret model and not every girl is going to be a size zero! No person is the same but yet why is there an “It” image for how a girl should look. If that’s the case, should all boys look like Hollister Models? No, I didn’t think so! Websites such as Ask.fm and Omegle are leading to higher rates of suicide in young girls, with bullying and the slating of girls’ looks and appearances from anonymous people becoming an everyday occurrence! It eventually comes to a point where young girls are unable to escape the negative comments because of the huge advances in technology; people have no escape from the internet or communication with others. Those websites should be taken down as they only cause one thing, and that is pain! Young girls have their whole lives ahead of them, to make a career for themselves, to fall in love, to have a broken heart, to marry and to start a family, but with more and more young girls doubting their looks it is no wonder the rates of suicide in young girls has risen enormously over the last 4 years. Even some celebrities make young girls feel unhappy with their looks when celebrities starting tweeting or instagramming photos of themselves with captions such as “Diet starts tomorrow” or “Not thin enough!”. Could you really blame a young girl for doubting themselves with that negativity hovering in the air? Girls are the driving force of everything in this whole world, as the saying goes “Behind every man, there is an even better woman”, and I couldn’t agree more! It is time for all girls, of old and young to stop doubting themselves and to be happy with the person they are, nobody is perfect, everyone has flaws. Embrace your flaws and worries; turn something negative into something positive, it is up to us!

1

There are a few easy steps to make embracing your flaws a lot easier.

Forget the past Don’t dwell on old photos of what you may have looked like, so you might have been a few inches skinnier or your hair might have been longer! You’re not that person anymore, so don’t cling onto something that you miss, accept the you that you are now. You would not be the person you are now if you were never the old you.

2 3

Stay Clear

Make sure to stay clear of other girls full of negative vibes. There are some people out there whose main focus in life is to make other people insecure and vulnerable, what is the point of that? If someone close to you is making you feel insecure or unhappy about yourself, explain to them the effect that their comments are having on you! If they don’t stop and help you feel confident about yourself, it is time to let them go!

Your Inner Demon It is no lie that each and every one of us have an inner little devil that is there to ruin our happiness every once in a while. If you feel good about yourself today but have a little voice inside of you questioning your happiness, ignore it! Block it out and shut it down, you deserve to be happy, don’t doubt yourself!

4

Demolish those morning blues The morning is the worst time of the day to feel down as it will have an effect on your whole day. Each and every morning, looking into a mirror repeat a positive and cheerful affirmation to yourself a few times like “I am happy with who I am”. You may laugh at yourself for a while when you start but trust me continuously saying this to yourself, even on those mornings when you don’t even want to get out of bed, it will have a positive effect on your day and your life.

To girls everywhere, it is time we embrace who we are. Stop comparing yourself to others, we are all unique and there is a reason for that!

Black Swan

Make-Up Tutorial By Kelly Angley

What you need:

1 3 20

Apply a light liquid foundation generously to the face. This can be done using a foundation brush or with your fingers.

2

Using a blusher brush, Apply bronzer to your cheeks, temples, towards your forehead and under your chin. This will make your cheeks especially look really defined. Giving it the scary ballerina look.

Light Foundation White Face Paint Bronzer Black Liquid eyeliner Silver glitter eyeshadow Mascara (or false lashes) Red lipstick Make up Brushes if need Next, apply a white face paint over your makeup. Use a sponge to dab the face paint onto your face, blending it with your foundation.

4

6

To start the eyes, using a black liquid eyeliner outline the swan eyes by drawing a thin straight line from the side of the nose up to the eyebrow. Draw little branches throughout the line. Bring the line right through the eyebrow and draw a flick at the end. Draw another line under the eye all the way to the edge of the eyes, drawing another flick at either edge.

5

Using a thin eyeliner brush, apply some glitter eyeshadow in between the lines on the eyelid. This will give your eyes the final dazzling look it needs. If you feel that the silver eyeshadow has faded the black lines, then apply a second coat of black liquid liner to the eyes.

7

Starting from where you drew the branches, draw more lines starting from there all the way to the edge of the eye. These lines don’t need to be straight or even the same size as each other.

For the finishing touch, we want to add some colour to those lips. Apply a red lipstick to the lip. First use either a lip brush or a lip liner to draw the outline of the colour on the lip. Once this is done, apply the lipstick to the lips evenly.

Tip To magnify the black swan makeup, stick feathers on an old hair band to create the black swan . feather tiara

Fashion Autumn Mix & Match By Felicia Angelica

N

ow that summer is over, all the summer clothes need to be packed away and the dull black jumpers are back out. Again for the season How depressing.. Aren’t you just sick of wearing dull winter clothes? Don’t worry. We have all the fashion secrets of matching clothes together. So don’t just throw those hot denim shorts under the bed until next year, wear them with a hot colourful jumper and some knee high socks for the ultimate sexy autumn look. Match with sexy nails and your all set for this autumn season.

28

Denim & Purple Outfit with French Manicure Nails

This casual outfit, which is both fancy and has quite a unique vintage style is great for a fun, stylish autumn look. The matching nails compliment the outfit with a hint of purple and pink on them. Personally, I love matching purple and denim together. I think it gives off a very casual but beautiful style. The purple stockings really give the outfit the finishing touch. Knee high, they will keep you warm and cozy but it will still make you look hot and sexy at the same time. Match with a stunning statement bag such as this and your all set for the cold autumn days.

Yellow, Purple & Black Outfit with Yellow & Purple Nail Art

This outfit is much more classy. Its great for work or if you are going for a job interview. This fully black outfit with a hint of yellow and green is elegant. By using mostly black, I think it makes the entire outfit look much more classy. The nails, which livens up the outfit matches the black perfectly. The great thing about wearing black is that any colours will match. So in future when you are wearing black, try mix it with bright yellows and oranges. This will insure that you don’t have a dull and boring outfit this season.

30

Autumn Outfit with Red Statement Nails

This everyday, casual wear is perfect for autumn. Its comfortable, stylish and sporty. Stripes are great for the autumn, it brings a bit of liveliness to the outfit as well as adding dimension. The top and bag match perfectly and the cardigan compliments the red nails. Red gives off such a bold statement. I match a lot of colors together but the best for the nails in autumn is absolutely red passion!

Style Icon

LADY GAGA We all know how crazy Lady Gaga is when it comes to fashion. From her meat dress to her telephone hats to her daily wigs, she has really made a name for her self as the Queen of Fashion. She has become such a fashion icon, that some designers are using her designs in their own fashion labels. Gagas uses her inspiration for fashion to expose her fans to her true self. She encourages them to be adventurous, individual and most importantly to love their body. Here, we take a look at some of Gaga’s craziest and not so crazy outfits and the stories behind them.. By Kelly Angley ©ohmymag

S

ince Lady Gaga came to fame in 2008, her extravagant style has been talked about world wide, just as much as her music has. Fans were introduced to Lady Gaga’s crazy side on the night of the VMA’s in 2010, where she came out in a meat dress. 4 years later and everyone is still talking about the ‘meat loving’ dress. According to the rolling stones “Attention-baiting or not, Lady Gaga’s wardrobe changed the landscape of pop culture.” A lot of people think Gaga wears her crazy wardrobe to get into the spotlight and I’m sure thats part of the reason. However, not everyone realizes the story behind her clothes. Lady Gaga her self has said on numerous interviews that she wears her © Marc Piasecki/FilmMagic clothes to express how she is feeling at the time. 2 years ago, Gaga was criticized by numerous magazines about her ‘weight gain’, stating she had put up weight by eating too much. The magazine revealed pictures of Gaga, showing her eating fast food, along with other pictures of her on her tour, zoomed in to show her legs and hips, stating how ‘overweight’ she was getting. Lady Gaga didn’t take this criticism too lightly especially since she had an eating disorder when she was younger. Neathless to say, Lady Gaga showed her rage towards these media corporations by wearing her Comme des Garçons dress (shown above) and by

starting her own “Body Revolution”, where fans posted images of their bodies on social media sites, expressing their own eating disorders now and in the past. Lady Gaga also revealed to Glamour magazine that wearing masks is how she deals with her insecurity. She said “Everybody always laughs because I feel so much more comfortable with, like, a giant paper bag on my whole body and paint on my face. Sometimes I try really hard to take it all off. But inevitably what’s underneath is still not a straight edge. And I don’t think it ever will be.” In 2008, Gaga created the “Haus of Gaga”, who are the personal creative team behind Gaga and responsible for much of her distinctive and creative style. The Haus of Gaga create most of Gaga’s clothes, props and makeup. They are the creators of the meat dress along with many other popular Gaga outfits. Lady Gaga has grown close to many other fashion designers such as Versace and the late Alexandra McQueen. Before his death, Alexandra McQueen provided Gaga with his own fashion pieces to wear for her Bad Romance video. With an appreciation for each others work, Gaga and McQueen grew close, until his death in 2010. Gaga has also grown close to Donatello Versace. They’ve been spotted together on many occasions, such as, at the Oscars this year. Gaga named her song “Donatello” after Versace. Gaga also appeared on the cover of Versace this year.

She appeared on the cover of Baadoration for them and fashion. This year at the Golden Globes, Gaga shocked the world as she appeared in one of her more reserved dresses. She wore her hair in platinum blonde girls, which complemented her golden dress. This was definitely a winner dress for Gaga. Love her or loathe her, Lady Gaga has become one of the most influential stars in pop culture. She has come from being a young shy self conscious girl to a confident young woman who uses her passion for fashion to express her love, hate and admiration to the world. She has become a role model to her fans from her inspirational words to her extreme style. She expresses her self to the world no matter what the cost. Her braveness is one of admiration.

Rica Romain

Celebrity Nail Stylist

R

ica has worked with many best photographers ( David Sims, Danko Steiner, Miguel Revereigo ) and the list of celebrities she has done the nails for is endless, in spite of all that she is just a modern girl from New York who fulfills her dreams. By Karolina Boczek

Celebrity List Courtney Love Tina Fey Saoirse Ronan Kristen Wiig Maya Rudolph Sara Silverman Amy Poehler Chord Overstreet Jesse Metcalfe Timbaland Justin Timberlake

Jennifer Lawrence Emma Stone Claire Danes Eva Longoria Kirsten Dunst Emma Watson Mary-Kate Olsen Ashley Olsen Liv Tyler Alexa Chung Ashley Greene

What do you think makes celebs keep coming back to you? I could say it is my perfected technique, or gentle touch, or maybe even my out of the box creativity, but I think celebrities keep coming back to me because i am in the business of costumer service. I understand this industry can be overwhelming at times, so I do whatever it takes to change a persons atmosphere and even outlook with something so simple as a great manicure. Whether it is a comical mani/pedi to an therapeutic buff and polish, I treat every set of hands with extraordinary worth, regardless of whom they are attached to.

34

Who was your first celebrity client? In 2006 I was working in a luxury day spa. I had a client by the name Keisha Cottle. She was a very loyal client. Even though I never knew her occupation, we developed a very pleasant relationship. One night while sleeping, I received an emergency call from Keisha stating she was at work hosting a very important party and was in need of nail repair immediately. Looking at the time, I expressed to her I was already in bed. She insisted if I came she would pay me 100 for one repair. Of course, I couldn’t resist so I jumped out of bed, and rushed to her location as quickly as possible. As soon as I get there I have the slight impression I’m a little underdressed :) As I was buzzed in, I soon found out Keisha was the studio manager for Timberlands production company. And she was hosting the listening party of Justin Timberlake new album (which was FutureSex/ LoveSounds at the time) So, in my pajamas I gave Keisha her nail repair and a deluxe hand massage to calm her down. As I was finishing up, Timberland walks into her office and says to me wow that looks great, I’m next. So at 1am, and the best damn MANicure i could ever give, Timberland became my first celebrity client.

About Martina

By Martina Ekstrand

M

y name is Martina and I’m a 27 year old nail art fanatic from Sweden. I live in a city called Borås, in a one bedroom apartment with my boyfriend and our two fluffy little dogs. I’ve been doing nail art for about 5-6 years now. And it all sort of began after I got my first set of acrylic nails. It was just an ordinary French manicure, but I loved them! They were long and shiny and beautiful! (I used to be a nail biter). I only got them done about two times and then I stopped. Since I was a student at that time it was too expensive for me. So I decided to grow my natural nails and then paint a French manicure on them myself. And that manicure slowly started to evolve to more colourful and fun things… I started out my nail art journey super basic with dots and stripes, and I owned maybe about three or four polishes. In the beginning I was very much into 3D nail art and I started making simple little bows and such with acrylics. But after just a short while I realized that I was more interested in drawing than building. As my experience grew so did my nail polish (and nail art) collection. After watching some nail art tutorials on You-tube I started experimenting with acrylic paints. This was about three years ago. Trading nail polish for acrylic paints for the nail art part made a huge difference. And it has to be one of my

favorite nail products – along with glitter. If you’ve been watching my videos for a while you probably know that I love using glitters. In August 2012 I started my YouTube channel PinkFlyingCow87. I posted one video and then almost forgot all about it. Then one day, almost a month later, I logged in and saw that I had gotten a few views and even a few comments. So I decided to make another video and by this time I started to post on a more regular basis. Then suddenly people started subscribing! And my channel began to grow really fast. In the end of 2012 (less than 6 months after my first video) I had about 250 subscribers and I was overjoyed. Six months after that I had over 2500 subscribers. And that’s when things really got insane. The number of views and subscribers sort of exploded. At the end of 2013 I had a little over 45,000 subscribers. This is what have encouraged me the most to keep doing what I do. And I’m loving every second of it!

6

Start out by painting your thumbs and ring fingers silver and the rest of the nails baby pink.

3 4 44

Blob some top coat on a piece of paper or plastic. Using a thick brush, dip it in the top coat and then carefully in the glitter. Paint the silver nails with this glitter mix.

Apply a layer of top coat to smooth out the surface. Then start creating the outlines for the bow with black acrylic paint.

Mix white and pink acrylic paint to create a shade slightly darker than the baby pink polish. Fill in the bows with this.

7

Add some details to the bows with the black acrylic paint.

Repeat the second step and apply the glitter mix to the edge of the nail, try to make it as thin as possible. Then, using the tip of the brush, start spreading the glitter to make a gradient effect.

At the opposite side of the nail paint some tiny spots with the light pink acrylic paint you created earlier. Outline the spots by drawing irregular “c” shapes and dots with black acrylic paint to create the leopard spots.

What you need: Baby pink & silver nail polish (I used Kleancolor #139 Pastel pink & NYX Girls #NGP145 Moonwalk) White, black & pink acrylic paints (I’m using a brand called Pebeo studio acrylics) Silver glitter Thin detail brush + a thickerbrush Top Coat (I use Seche Vite dry fast top coat)

You might wanna repeat this step a couple of times for each nail. With some black acrylic paint draw the zombie’s hair in the cuticle area. Then, still using the black paint outline the eyes. Make one big eye and one small.

Time for the mouth! Start by drawing a horizontal line across the nail. Then add some short lines on top of it to create stitches.

4

Lastly, add the two black dots for the zombies eyes.

My Life as a Hand Model By Ciara Pisa

I love being a hand model because it is a very fun and unique occupation. My hands have competed in many nail competitions and have been featured on magazine covers. People have always commented on my hands and nails since I was 9 years old, and one day my mom decided to create an account for me on handmodels.net (which is now defunct). It was on this site that I was discovered for my very first job as a hand model. The gig entailed modeling different designs on my nails for Pico Nails in Los Angeles. The photographer for this assignment recommended me to a company that needed a hand model to advertise a receipt machine. It was at this particular job that it was suggested I become a fashion model. So for the past 2 years I have been modeling clothing for designers, fashion shows, and Japan Up! Magazine. My next adventure has been as a hand model for nail artists for nail competitions. These competitions have led to my hands being on the cover of Nails Magazine for the May 2013 issue and an upcoming issue for November 2013. Hand models need to take care of their hands and nails just as a model needs to care for her face and body. Every other day I use a sugar scrub to exfoliate the dead skin and I use hand lotion to soften my hands daily. Each night I make sure I moisturize my cuticles and nails with cuticle oil. Whenever I go outside, I make sure to wear sunscreen not only on my body, but also on my hands to protect them from premature aging. My routine is pretty simple as you can see.

Please visit and like my hand modeling page on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ pages/HAND-MODEL-Ciara-Pisa/122081817835436?ref=hl

As long as I receive requests to use my hands for magazines, instructional videos, etc., I will continue hand modeling. Neither height nor weight is ever an issue for this type of modeling, however, I do maintain an active and healthy lifestyle because I feel better when I do and it gives me energy to keep up with my busy schedule. My goal is for my hands to be used in national advertisements or doubling for actresses in movies or television. This job is a lifestyle and I am enjoying every moment.

Salon Review

Olga remembers always being interested in nails. It all started as a hobby but since she moved to Ireland 12 years ago it became her full time job. In 2006, she opened her own salon and in the same year took first place in the National Nail Competition, it was the highlight of her career! Since then she has trained many girls who successfully run their own bussiness across Co. Clare. She realised that education was something she has a big passion for and in 2011 she completed CND Bootcamp and became a CND Education Ambassador! At the moment she is a very busy mom of three, working full time and running courses in Clare and Dublin. She says ‘All of this could be overwhelming at times...but...I love what I do, and I think I can say that I’m one of the luckiest people to be able to do what I love the most Nails! ple feel good about them selves and that alone is very rewarding!’ As somebody said before - ‘if you truly love what you do, you are guaranteed to be successful!’ And I think THAT is the key to success! I love coming to work and meeting my old and new customers, talking to them about their daily lives... Most of my clients are women and we have a lot in common, the age varies from teenagers to ladies in their 70’s. I get a lot of teen stories, mostly about girlfriend/boyfriend situations and older ladies have a lot of stories to tell, which are very interesting and inspiring... their experiences in life have helped me in the past. Overall, we have a lot of fun in work and I consider myself very lucky and privileged to be able to meet different people! When I really want in the future is maybe to have my own nail academy, where I can share; pass my knowledge and experience to the girls who just want to upgrade their skills! I think I have a lot more to offer and I really cant wait to see what the future holds for me!

o it is that time of year again, where the nights are getting longer and the days are getting shorter! It’s the time of year where new things are starting, be it college, a new school year, or even a new job! It’s that time of year when we have to say goodbye to our Summer Days, our endless nights and our never ending fun. While our Summer may just have been “The Best One Yet” it cannot last forever! Now is the time we have to pull our socks up, and get back into the heart of things. Be it beginning a new path in life, starting a new adventure or just returning to the old one, we have to face it with a smile. Before we know it, Halloween Costumes will be our kids daily attire, Christmas Decorations will be for Sale and the annual trip to visit Santa will just be around the corner. Is it just me or is time flying be? It is no wonder that when so many things are catching up on us, that we begin to panic and let the small things get to us! Life is way too short to let one change in season affect us in a strong and discomforting way. Instead of thinking negatively about what’s ahead of us, think of it with a smile on your face and always remember there is someone out there who’s problems are worse than yours. With a few simple steps and a new change of attitude, you can easily “Beat Your Winter Blues”:

The endless nights and the constant socialising was the highlight of your Summer right? Just because the evenings get darker and the days get shorter does not mean all the fun has to end. I for one am the biggest culprit of this. The minute September rolls in and the cold breeze is blowing through, I tend to stay indoors as much as possible and never stray out. How is this good for me? Well it’s not, just because the seasons are changing does not mean you have to too! Force yourself to go outside to parties and visit your friends, in the long run, being around people who make you happy will brighten up your mood and make you see the positive side to life.

Inhale that Fresh Air apers

©whdwallp

Holidays and Fun times are not just for Summer. If your not a fan of the cold, break up your Winter with a trip to a sunny island during your winter blues. This will automatically boost your mood and give you a goal to focus on while helping you survive the brutal sleet and snow! Along with this, a change of scenery in dull times is good for the mind, so be it a day trip or a week long vacay, change up your view and take a much needed Winter Break. While some might feel bleak times are ahead and are already crossing off days on their calendar to Summer 2015, the Winter might be exactly what you need! Set yourself some goals, live your life like you always do and don’t allow those Winter Blues to get you down! You are the only one to control how your life goes, so don’t give in to the Winter Blues!

I think each and everyone of us can agree that exercise and the outside environment are just not on your to do list when Winter Strikes. The piercing cold air makes you want to cuddle up and watch TV on the couch, right? Being stuck in the same room or area for a long period of time can totally ruin your mood along with your health and fitness. Get outside despite the weather and inhale the goodness into your body! While the initial step outside is the hardest part, you will be grateful you took that step afterwards.

Train with The Best NSI Hair Nail and Beauty Award winning training company

Over the last 15 years our aim is to train students to the highest standard in nail courses. Our NSI Gel/Acrylic certificates that we present on completion of the course are internationally recognised worldwide and fully insurable with all insurance companies, says Louisa Flanagan, owner of NSI Hair Nail and Beauty in Swords. NSI are proud to also be an ITEC accredited school since 2009 and run a full list of ITEC courses like nail technology, beauty specialist, manicure and pedicure, waxing and make up. The head education master, Louisa Flanagan (with Ezflow and NSI Ireland), has won Nail Technian of the year 3 times, and is the only person in Ireland to so. Louisa’s experience as both a trainer and salon owner allows her to teach every aspect required to become a great technician. She has an amazing team of educatiors who work with her, making sure all the students get the best possible training. ”We offer a fastastic back up service to our students and customers, we have free workshop days that they can attend after they have completed the course,” says Louisa, adding “If any student is struggling, they can come back and repeat the course free of charge. We are very busy with our courses and could have up to 3 training rooms going at one time, We offer a large selection of courses from gel, acrylic, to nail art and many more. NSI is now in their 4th premises, where they have 3 large training rooms, a large cash ‘n carry, a large storage and packing area and a cafe, with a very busy online shop that serves the whole country.

Louisa says, ‘My main focus is training , I love my job and love giving the best education possible to all my students. My biggest challenge was entering Nail Technician of the Year here. The effort I put in paid off and for three years I won Nail Technician of the Year and then had the pleasure of training and mentoring the next 2 girls who won it too. Every time I set targets for myself I have managed toachieve them. It wasn’t easy as the industry was improving at a rapid rate and there were lots of great girls out there who were bitten by the ‘Nail Bug’ and were dedicating their time to improvement. It’s amazing now to see young girls after having done their first course with me developing that same love for nails and wanting to become better. Teaching the nail technicians of tomorrow is what drives me in this business. I love helping and encouraging them in their self-improvement journey. I have had students who now do top film stars and actors, models and sports people. There are a lot of nails companies in Ireland now but my job is to make sure that my students get the best training and back up service. We offer free workshops to all our students.’

Sometimes, it can be frustrating when we dont know enough about gel or acrilic nails. its difficult to know which is the best option for you, when you dont know much about nails to begin with. It all depends on your own preference and what you want to get out of your nails. Do you want it look natural or be more flexible or stronger? Do you want them to last just for a specific ocassion like a wedding or a night out or do you want it to last longer? These are the type of questions you need to ask yourself, in order to get the nails you desire. Karolina Boczek is here to answer all your nail queries.

©naissus

©collegefashion ©shortandsweetsnails

1. Which is better - acrylic or gel nails?

underneath.

Well, this is the hard one. I always say these are two different products and they apply differently. Some people prefer gel because it is flexible and for some people looks more natural, and some prefer acrylic because they find it stronger. But how can you answer which is better for their nails? Well, you have to try both on them and then you can decide for yourself.

2. Which ones last longer? This question always makes me smile, but truly it is a complicated question. Taking care of your nails regardless of which product you use is essential. Cuticle oils are a great product to insure you have healthy nails. Both types of nails last the same amount of time depending on how you look after them.

4. When do I have to come back to get my nails filled? I always say between 2-3 weeks, but 3 weeks is a maximum time between appointments. If you leave it until after the 3-4 week period, the products loses its strength and the nail breaks. Be sure to get a refill before this happens or you may be charged more for the service.

Let Glimmer answer you.... by

3. How can I make my nails stronger? Gel/acrylic nails, themselves make the nails stronger. However, sometimes its best just to leave the natural nail grow instead. If this is the case, then services such as manicures or IBX treatment might be a better option for you. I always advise to use cuticle oil like Solar Oil or Dadi Oil to make the nails stronger

5. Why do my nails get ruined after gels/acrylic.

The improper removal of the product can cause nails to break and split. If you pull the gel/acrylic off , they can take a few Karolina Boczek layers of the nail plate off with it. Th nail technician is only at fault if she has removed the nails improperly and caused damage to the nail. If you feel that you don’t want this service anymore, you can go for a healthier option with IBX repair system or Spa Manicure.

Make-Up Brushes

On the Market

F

inding the right makeup brushes is essential to insure flawless, glowing skin. Finding the right brush is just as important as finding the right makeup. It all comes down to quality. Quality doesn’t come cheap and neither do make up brushes. It is of vital importance to get the best quality brushes. Not only will it make your makeup look flawless and sexy but the brushes will last forever, once they are looked after. Here is our A-List brushes that we recommend you use.

Foundation Brush

Foundation Brush, The Body Shop, €19.95, Debenhams

Foundation brushes contain a blend of natural and synthetic bristles, giving your makeup a blended natural and organic finish. Squirt some liquid foundation on the back of your hand and use the brush to paint on your foundation. Once all the makeup is on your face, use the brush once more to blend it in fully.

Concealer Brush

Concealer Brush, Bare Minerals, €17, Debenhams

64

Concealer brushes should be small and stiff. This will enable you to dab concealer onto small blemishes and spots, which would be too hard to do with just your fingers. Concealer brushes are great to use around the nose. Because, again, its hard to accomplish it with your finger. A concealer brush will give your makeup the smooth finish it needs to glow.

Blusher Brush

Blusher Brush, Illamasqua, €29.80, Debenhams

A good quality blusher brush is a must have. Lets face it. It isn’t easy to add blush with your hands, you never get the results you want. A good blusher brush should be soft and should have natural animal hair bristles. “If you’re serious about getting a really believable makeup application, your blush brush is the single best place to start,” Verel says. If you can only effort to buy one brush, buy a blusher brush. An angled blusher brush is the best option because it helps to guide you along the cheek bone, giving you a naturally rosy cheek bone.

`Eye Shadow Brush Eye Shader Brush - 239, Mac, €28, Brown Thomas

Eye Shadow Brush (Size: BIG), Artdeco, €16.50, Debenhams

“A shadow brush should feel smooth, soft and silky—not bristly, stiff or too chiseled,” Verel says. Shadow brushes will ensure your eyeshadow looks blended and smooth. Usually smaller brushes work best, as you can get around the crease of your eye better. However, big brushes can also work to your benefit as well. Use the big brush to apply your base colour and highlight colour. Then use the smaller brush around the creases and corners of your eyes. Finally use the small brush to blend all the colours together to insure a natural blended tone.

`Eye Liner Brush An eye liner brush will be great for blending your eyeliner into your lashline. We all know how much of a pain eyeliner is to put on, especially on the bottom of your eye. The eye liner brush will allow your more precision with your liner. You can also wet the brush and use eyeshadow as a coloured liner instead.

Angeled Eye Liner Brush, €1.99, Salon Services

Brow Brush Brow brushes are great to keep your eyebrows groomed and smooth looking. Plus, they are so cheap to buy! If you like your eyebrows dark, add some eye brow pencil to the wand and comb it through your eyebrows for a better blend.

Eye Brow Brush, €1.99, Salon Services

`Lip Liner Brush Lip brushes are ideal to make your lips look bigger and more defined. It will give your lips the shape it needs to look sexy and hot. It also brings up the colour of the lipstick more, because it gives the illusion of bigger, fuller lips. Trust us, that red lip stick is going to look so much fuller with a lip brush.

Lip Brush, Artdeco €8.90, Debenhams
