What?

Picture a lunch buffet bursting with trays of lasagne, moussaka, chicken pie, roast beef, chicken schnitzel, macaroni and cheese, as well as plenty of vegetarian and Banting options, all freshly cooked and delicious. Then there’s a colourful assortment of cooked vegetable side dishes and salads. It’s hard to choose between roasted butternut, artichokes and green beans and almond salad, but the great thing is you can have a tiny taste of everything that takes your fancy and pay by weight.

When owner Allen Swaine opened Barney’s in December, his goal was to provide wholesome, locally sourced food, made fresh and without preservatives, that people could eat in or take home for dinner. He focuses on sourcing artisan products that are made locally and ethically for the shelves of the deli, visiting each supplier and tasting his way to the best. His choice of Kristen’s Kick-Ass Ice Cream is definitely a winner along with coffee from Truth Coffee roastery, together with irresistible brownies and cakes, or something from the specialist breakfast menu. These can all be enjoyed on the outside deck, conveniently located just at the start of Chapman’s Peak Drive – a perfect meeting place after a walk on the beach. As well as Banting breads and baked goods which Allen says fly out of the door almost before they’ve made it onto the shelf, the biggest hit at Barney’s has been the supper club. After only a month there are already 100 subscribers ordering individually plated meals of a main and two sides, which are delivered free within Hout Bay on any night of the week. There’s a new menu each week, but signature favourites like the excellent chicken pie and the tasty moussaka tend to stay on the list. The deli’s philosophy is all about locally grown and produced ingredients. With that in mind, Allen is negotiating for some land to start a vegetable-growing project to train unemployed youngsters in vegetable gardening, with the aim of supplying the deli and then expanding into a community feeding scheme.

Picnic? Check

As summer ebbs away towards autumn, make the most of the mild days with a picnic at one of these delightful local wine estates WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

W

ith a blanket spread beneath shady oak trees and a cornucopia of delicious lunchtime bites, it’s hard not to love a good picnic. There are dozens of wine estates offering vineyard picnics, from the everpopular picnic pods on family-friendly Warwick Wine Estate to the platters at historic Groote Post on the West Coast. One of my favourites is Uitkyk Wine Estate on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. On the spacious lawns beneath towering oak trees, the Georgian character of the famous Manor House is celebrated in the farm’s stylish picnics. Expect croquet sets laid out, and a classic basket brimming with breads, pate, cheese and charcuterie delivered to your blanket. Each basket includes a bottle of Uitkyk wine, but it’s worth stopping in at the wine-tasting centre beforehand – the estate is particularly famous for its Cabernet Sauvignon.

While Uitkyk offers an atmosphere of relaxed romance, Allée Bleue is perfect for families. A large jungle gym and jumping castle give adults a break as they tuck into a generous spread of dishes laid out on the shady tables – no need for blankets. Alongside the usual breads and cheeses, the inclusion of a range of chilled salads in jars is a nice touch here, and much of the fresh herbs and salad leaves are grown on the estate. Expect the likes of wild rice salad with organic baby carrots; baby fennel with red onion, and a delicious stir-fry of soy-sesame beef with egg noodles. There’s also laid-back live music on Sundays. Neighbouring Solms-Delta also offers lovely family-friendly picnics on the riverbank, while Hartenberg is famous for its farm hospitality. Cellar master Carl Schultz crafts some of the best Rieslings in the Cape, a perfect partner to the generous picnic

hampers loaded up with charcuterie, caramelised-onion dip, panko-crumbed chicken pops, fresh salads, and the estate’s snoek pate. There’s plenty of space for children to run riot, and the service is friendly and attentive.

ith up to 50,000 people expected to attend this year, Cape Town Carnival has set a world standard on how to celebrate our city. We chatted with Cape Town Carnival creative director Brad Baard about what to expect this year. By the sound of it, it’s going to be an urban celebration in true Cape Town style. This year’s carnival on 12 March along the Fan Walk into Green Point sees collaborations with organisations and artists from AfrikaBurn, Unima SA (the South African association of Puppetry and Visual performance), the Handspring Trust, and the District Six Museum. The theme this year is Street Life. Brad says, “Street Life embraces the diversity of people and the different situations found on the streets. It explores the dynamics at play in shared public spaces such as who’s in the fast lane, who’s being sidelined, and who’s just trying to make it by? The theme this year explores transport, travel, vendors, entrepreneurs, ambition, opportunity, street style, street food and fashion.”

The carnival seeks to turn the ordinary occurrences of rush-hour traffic, traffic jams, lunchtime, leisure and night life into an extraordinary production. Carnivalgoers can expect wild costumes, fantastic floats, expertly choreographed dances, and performances by more than 2,000 talented participants from across Cape Town and the rest of the world. “There will be acrobats, stilt walkers, hip-hop, pantsula and capoeira performers, drift bikers, cyclists, skateboarders, roller derby players and a special commemorative float honouring District Six,” he says. There will also be a variety of food trucks, and various crafts along the Fan Walk. A few well-known faces will be there such as Siv Ngesi, Liezel van der Westhuizen, Deon Bing, Sibongile Mafu, Tim Thabethe, Ryan O’Connor, and stars from Suidooster. Among the familiar faces are talented performers Die Nuwe Graskoue Trappers (fresh from a World Music Festival triumph), Flywheel Cycles and Street Stylers to name a few. F

looring treatments can be the defining feature of a home, placing it squarely within a specific style context. From the refined parquet of old flats to the shiny linoleum of suburban bungalows to the terracotta tiles of ’90s renovations, each style has a story to tell. The current trend is generally back towards either concrete or wood flooring again, but the most interesting developments lately have been in the latter. Over the past few years, we’ve seen a trend towards wood with a heavily distressed, almost burnt finish. It’s different from traditional stains and varnishes, however, in that the wood is literally distressed and not simply painted to look the part. At interior trade shows, pieces are often put through their paces – they are smoked, charred and boiled in oil to create a deep, dark finish. It’s a continuation of the trend towards heritage and heirloom items, and

immediately imbues pieces and spaces with a sense of timeworn appeal. At the consumer end of the spectrum, we’re seeing the black wood trend surfacing subtly in wooden flooring and furniture. As Barry Solomon from Cape Town’s BestWood Flooring says, “After years of relatively lighter and neutral tones, we are seeing a return to the assuredness of a richer, deeper look.” Most homeowners would balk at floors and furniture that look like they’ve survived a blaze, but the appeal of pieces that look like they’ve survived the decades with some scars to prove it, seem to be more than welcome.

Take the scenic route Two-wheel fanatics can experience Cape Town in a new light with these scenic routes

A

s summer comes to an end, be sure to get the most of the last few days of warmth and sunshine by exploring our more beautiful routes on your motorcycle or bicycle. Here are our top scenic routes to be enjoyed on two wheels.

Helshoogte Pass

One of the oldest in SA, this picturesque route links Stellenbosch and Franschhoek while passing through the small towns of Kylemore, Johannesdal and Pniel. The pass offers incredible views of soaring mountains on all sides as well as famous wine farms. Stop on the way: There are plenty of great wine farms along the way. Try out Delaire or Tokara on the Stellenbosch side, or Mont Rochelle or Hillcrest Berry Orchards on the Franschhoek side.

Chapman’s Peak Drive

Victoria Road (between Camps Bay and Hout Bay)

Whether you are pedal- or motor-powered, this is a great route to do in the early hours of the morning. Get the crew together and head out to catch the sunrise. This may be a common commute for many Capetonians, but the best way to enjoy the fresh sea air is on two wheels. Stop on the way: Grab a morning brekkie at Bootlegger Coffee Company, or, if you’re doing a sundowner mission, visit The Leopard Bar at The Twelve Apostles.

No list would be complete without mentioning the Chapman’s Peak Drive. A popular route for cyclists and bikers, there’s nothing better than spending a morning or late afternoon cruising along this route while admiring the towering Chapman’s Peak on the one side and the blue seas of the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Stop on the way: Enjoy fish and chips at one of the numerous restaurants at the Hout Bay Harbour, or on the weekend visit the Bay Harbour Market or enjoy music and food at Cafe Roux in Noordhoek.

Ou Kaapse Weg

Contrary to what the name implies, Ou Kaapse Weg is actually quite modern – it was built in 1968. The route will take you along the Silvermine Nature Reserve and has breathtaking views of the Southern Suburbs and False Bay. Cyclists can take a turn into the reserve for great mountain bike routes. Stop on the way:ee Enjoy a picnic in the Silvermine Nature Reserve or drive further on to Steenberg Road and settle in at Tribakery in Tokai.

Value of global property is 2,7 times the world’s GDP

T

he total value of all developed real estate on the globe reached $217 trillion in 2015, according to calculations by international real estate advisor, Savills (represented in Africa by Pam Golding Properties). The analysis measures the entire developed property universe including commercial and residential property, as well as forestry and agricultural land. The value of global property in 2015 amounted to 2,7 times the world’s GDP, making up roughly 60% of mainstream global assets and representing an important store of national, corporate and individual wealth. property accounted for 75% of the total value of global property. Yolande Barnes, head of Savills World Research, says, “To give this figure context, the total value of all the gold ever mined is approximately $6 trillion (about R96,47 trillion), which pales in comparison to the total value of developed property by a factor of 36 to 1.” Overall, the biggest and most important component of global real estate value is the homes that people live in, totalling $162 trillion. The sector has the largest spread of ownership with approximately 2,5 billion households and is most closely tied with the fortunes of ordinary people.

ccording to the latest figures from the National Credit Regulator, 23,45 million South Africans are credit active. Of those, 42,3% have impaired credit records. The stark reality is that many South Africans are struggling to meet the repayments on their debt. Over the last few years the people of this country have had unprecedented access to credit, and unfortunately many of us have not managed it very well. Many have found themselves in a spiral of taking on more and more debt to survive, and they need to find a way out. Unfortunately, this can be a very difficult, and very painful process. However, it is possible if tackled in the right way. Anyone with debt problems needs to take these key steps:

1

Commit to not taking on any more debt. Draw a line in the sand so that you don’t make things any worse than they already are.

2

Understand the situation you are in. Before you can fix the problem, you need to work out exactly how much you owe, to whom, and what interest rates you are being charged on every store card, credit card and loan you have taken.

3

Negotiate with creditors. Speak to the companies you owe and find out which might be able to offer lower interest rates or repayment holidays. Ultimately, they want to get their money back so they may be willing to come to an agreement that will give them a better chance of recovering what they have lent you.

Settle on a game plan. The usual advice is to pay off the debt with the highest interest rate first, but this may not always be the best approach if this will take a long time. You may prefer a quick win to make you feel that you are getting somewhere and that your goal is achievable. Paying off the smallest debts first may therefore give you the confidence and momentum you need to tackle the rest.

Make sacrifices. You are going to have to find the money to pay off your debts, and that has to come from somewhere. Start by preparing a spending plan that allocates your monthly income to specific expenses, cutting back on those things that aren’t necessities. Also sell things that you no longer use or need or can simply do without. A cash windfall from selling clothes, electronics or DVDs could wipe out a chunk of what you owe and put you on the road to recovery.

esigner Stacy Beukes and her team create a range of individual jewellery at A Ring To It in Commercial Street. It’s primarily a manufacturing studio with a showroom where clients can visit by appointment to shop and discuss commissions. Q: How did your business start? A: After studying jewellery design and manufacture at Stellenbosch University, I started making commission pieces while completing an honours programme at UCT. Then, after two years of co-owning a jewellery design and manufacture business, I opted to go independent and started A Ring To It. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: The East City was an unexplored area for me. I liked that it’s in the city

with a vibrant mix of creatives. It’s safe, secure and central. After a few visits, the sense of community, as well as the host of creative neighbours and the proximity to home, retailers and suppliers met the criteria. Q: How did you find your premises? A: It took me forever to find a suitable space – there was a lot of online searching and office viewings (that looked nothing like the pictures). It took research, perseverance and an understanding of what the business needed as well as keeping the budget in mind. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The area is inspiring, and being inspired is an essential part of being creative and creating. A simple coffee run can result in a collaboration or sharing of ideas. Walking down the streets you are greeted with inspiration – graffiti, impromptu art moments, design events (First Thursdays) and views of Table Mountain. Many of my suppliers are based in the immediate area, so I can support local businesses to get my printing, photos, art supplies and materials. We are easily accessible for clients, and our staff members have easy access to transport. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Tenants in our building range from musicians to film-makers and accountants. An artist and ceramicist are my immediate neighbours. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Studio space in town is generally priced higher than outlying areas of the CBD, like Woodstock or Salt River. It can range from R4,000 upwards for a small space. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: Clients collect orders from our studio and we meet with couples or grooms-to-be to design engagement rings. Visits by appointment to shop the range are less frequent, as many clients shop online or visit our stand on Saturdays at the OZCF (Oranjezicht City Farm) market. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Of course! Our studio is slowly being outgrown because of expanding equipment, staff and the magnitude of my ideas, so our brand will soon need a bigger, more visible option for our next chapter. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, I have an online store on the website (aringtoit.co.za) as well as on the Hello Pretty site (hellopretty.co.za). Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our “tie the knot” range of bracelets and necklaces, and our newest “sweets with the change” range are the current top sellers.

he main attraction to living in West Beach is the suburb’s long stretch of tranquil beach with uninterrupted views of Table Mountain from the iconic angle showing its flat top. Up until recently, West Beach was one of the few areas in Cape Town where there was still space for development and property prices were more affordable, which has attracted many younger people looking to get onto the property ladder. This rise in the suburb’s popularity

has come at a bit of a cost, however, as these days West Beach has a lot more traffic. Still, at least you have a nice view of the mountain as you inch towards work or school, and when you get back home after a hard day’s work, you can go for a stroll along the beach or a quick dip in the ocean. West Beach is mostly made up of freestanding houses, with a few large properties high up on the hill – although these come along with

hefty price tags. There are also some townhouse complexes, and while property sizes aren’t huge, they still offer better value than you’d find anywhere nearer Cape Town’s city centre. The area also attracts young people looking to rent who are drawn particularly to the outdoorsy lifestyle. Not as glitzy or as busy as Clifton or Camps Bay in high season, West Beach offers unspoilt beaches and respite from the busyness of the city.

There are some great private schools in the area, a strong community feeling, and a neighbourhood watch that patrols regularly. The MyCiTi bus route also runs through the neighbourhood, so there are good public transport links available. West Beach also marks the start of the Cape West Coast region, so places like Darling, Langebaan, Paternoster and Churchhaven are easily accessible when you want to get out of the city for a weekend break.

Pick up some goodies at Carlucci’s Deli, set off for the beach and have a picnic. Grab a burger at Jerry’s Burger Bar, sit on the deck and soak up the views of Table Mountain. Head to the Cattle Baron for a plate of the best ribs in town. Visit The Blue Peter Hotel for drinks on a weekend afternoon.

The MyCiTi bus route runs through the neighbourhood, giving you easy access to the rest of Cape Town. Get on your bike and head down one of the many cycle paths into the city. Head away for weekends down the West Coast, just a few hours’ drive away.

Agent commentary Q: What type of buyer is drawn to West Beach? A: West Beach is an extremely popular upmarket area in Blaauwberg. Properties range there from average-sized modern family homes to expansive mansions, some boasting breathtaking views towards Durbanville Hills and/or of the ocean and Table Mountain. This quiet tranquil suburb lends itself well to medium- to largesized families, and these tend to be the kinds of buyers who reside there. The sectional-title units tend to attract smaller families to first-time homebuyers and couples. With the excellent rental returns to be had there, the area is also very popular with investment buyers who look also to attain good capital appreciation.

Q: What types of properties are available? A: The neighbourhood has become hugely popular with residential buyers, but also holiday home buyers who now come from across the globe. It is a fairly small neighbourhood – home to just 2,110 properties split about 50/50 between freehold property and security complexes, ranging from exclusive housing estates with luxury homes that face the ocean, to luxury family houses, townhouse and apartment complexes. Prices start at around R1,5m for a threebedroomed townhouse set a bit further away from the sea, and upwards of this for a house further from the sea. Closer to the ocean, houses tend to range upwards of R2m to as much as R20m.

Q: How has the area changed over the past five years? A: The Western Seaboard area has grown exponentially in the last five years. A big attraction to the area has been the MyCiTi bus route which has made the area more accessible to those working in town. Good schools have also played a major role. The Parklands and Sunningdale areas are still increasing at a rapid rate and offer excellent value for money. The West Beach area, while mainly built up now, offers a close proximity to the beach, as well as properties for sale in price ranges across the board – from mansions to apartments, many with views of the sea and mountain.
