I mom
M
oms are superheroes. They have to be pretty indestructible given all of life’s demands. So what is being the modern-day mom really all about? Here’s what some of my closest friends have to say. Happy Mother’s Day!
The millennial mom is a fine-tuned combination of slick organisational skills, a sharp sense of humour, and an unconditional supply of love and patience.
She keeps a running list of everything in her head – from what’s in the fridge, to the extramural schedule, and the family social calendar.
She’s a woman who is able to simultaneously be a chef, cleaner, clown, teddy bear, vending machine, peacekeeper, teacher and overflowing fountain of love.

n a mission to explore the tastes of home and redefine them for the contemporary kitchen, Ryan Smith has built up a following for his creative cuisine and a constantly evolving menu. The theatricality with smoke-filled glass domes I remember from a visit three years ago, is less evident, but the same experimental playfulness crops up throughout the menu.
floating pearls of black tapioca, satisfying in texture and umami taste.
We’d gone for the chef’s selection of four courses, abdicating the difficulty of choosing, and giving us four different starters to taste between us. Before those arrived we had already given our taste buds a workout on the bread board with mushroom butter and bokkom wafer, the jewel-like snacks (a rich duck parfait, a clear red cabbage and chicken jelly, and a melting hot nugget of mielie pap with chakalaka) and the amuse bouche of a smoked snoek and wood sorrel miso with
With each dish we tasted influences from many cuisines, but somewhere in the make-up of each dish there was a South African element. In the tuna tataki, vibrant with fennel kimchi and melting ginger granita, a glowing cube of rooibos marshmallow offers a softer note of mellow contrast. The Cape Malay pickled fish potjie is all warm spices and local history in a bowl.
Tapioca has become an unlikely favourite ingredient since Ryan tried it as an alternative to risotto. “It’s proved surprisingly popular,” he says. “People would go, ‘Yuck, this was horrible at school,’ and then try it anyway out of curiosity and love the way it can hold a flavour in the same way rice does.”
When and where?
The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable with an open kitchen. Ryan’s wife Lana is a welcoming host and skilled at pairing wines from small local estates with the succession of dishes. “We do serious food, but we don’t want people to be all hushed and analysing every mouthful,” says Ryan. “At the end of the day a meal out is about enjoying time together, tasting interesting flavours and coming away feeling like you’ve been fed.”

Wine pioneer Far from the heart of the winelands, Lismore Estate Vineyards is producing world-class wine in the high hills of the Overberg WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

T
he vineyards of Elgin and Bot River have long given way to wheat and fynbos as the R406 bends east against the rump of the Riviersonderend Mountains. The hills beyond the village of Greyton seem unlikely country for a wine estate, yet back in 2003, owner and winemaker Samantha O’Keefe saw the potential of these cool mountain slopes. Soil samples were collected, unprofitable pastures were ploughed over, educated guesses were made, and vines were planted. Thirteen years on, Lismore Estate Vineyards produces a compact range of acclaimed wines that expertly reflect the area’s unique, yet challenging, terroir. Unirrigated “dryland” vineyards are set on steep slopes of chunky shale soils where the altitude and year-round rain make ripening a challenge, yet low yields deliver superb quality grapes.
Carnival of Dreams
If there’s a signature wine it’s the barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc, aged on the lees (dead yeast cells left behind after fermentation) in old oak barrels for 11 months. The result is a Sauvignon unique to Lismore – creamy and textured on the palate with integrated acidity and subtle fruit. No surprise the international Decanter magazine billed it as its “Must-try White” earlier this year.

“It’s a wonderful food wine, and a wine that will age beautifully,” says O’Keefe. The Chardonnay is equally impressive, with citrus and apple notes on a complex palate. Another superb food wine, it’s a perfect pair for spicy dishes blending sweet and savoury elements. A barrel-fermented Viognier rounds out the range of white wines, and is again a wine entirely expressive of Lismore’s terroir. Expect honeysuckle, peaches and dried apricots with a lingering citrus finish – it’s complex and beguiling. The same could be said for the Syrah. Tired of hungry baboons stealing up to 60% of her crop, O’Keefe was on the verge of ripping out the vines. Then

the respected Robert Parker Wine Advocate Reviewers’ Choice named the 2014 vintage as one of the 50 Best New Releases from 2015. Out of 30,000 wines worldwide, it was the only South African red to make the list. Suddenly the wine went from naughty stepchild to star performer. “This wine isn’t made, it’s grown, says O’Keefe. “It really tells the story of Lismore; it’s a wine with a sense of place.”

esearch has shown that humans have a tendency to recognise animal and human forms in all kinds of places. Called pareidolia by scientists, it’s the reason we spot everything from the Virgin Mary in burnt toast, and a rabbit in the moon, to facial expressions in cars. In design, however, actively appealing to this instinct is often seen as the worst kind of kitsch. Objects are supposed to be as neutral as possible and people are supposed to be the ones with personalities. But some designers disagree.
objects with personality. His Catch Chair for &Tradition, for example, looks like it’s reaching out to hug you as you sit down – engaging with the user even as a static object.
Jaime Hayon is one of these designers. From his monkey side table for BD Barcelona Design to his menagerie of crystal vessels for Baccarat, he believes that there’s nothing wrong with having a bit of fun with interiors. At the recent Design Indaba conference, he explained how he wanted to create
This trend comes and goes as people either try to create more serious or light-hearted interiors. While it’s sometimes obvious and sometimes more subconsciously appealing, it’s easy to see the joy people get out of objects that look at least a little bit friendly in a sometimes stressful world.
Locally, we’re seeing this trend show up in all kinds of pieces. The LittleMan Lamp series from David Krynauw, for example, appears to be sitting back and resting tired legs. The Goggo Bench by Frank Bohm, on the other hand, is designed so that, according to the designer, its “scale and irregular legs mimic the goggo’s swift motion”.

A blend of modern and vintage
Lighting the way Shining a light on the latest trends WORDS: LAUREN ALBERTYN
•
IMAGES: ISTOCK
This look is often achieved by combining recycled materials and vintage accents with modern undertones, creating an authentic design. This category of lighting design showcases light fixtures with painted finishes, antique mirrored-glass, modernised scrollwork and hand-bent arching forms.
The bigger, the better
Oversized light fixtures serve as the focal point of a room. This bold look can be a style accent above a dining room table, kitchen island or in a hallway. This trend has become popular in homes with high ceilings and long hallways.
Bringing the heat
Warmer tones are on the rise. Bronze, brass and gold tones can be seen everywhere from household appliances to hardware. The freedom to mix metals has gained popularity and homeowners have begun experimenting with seemingly contrasting metallic tones, often in a single room.
Navy is one of the top colour trends this year, and popular designers are experimenting with nautical themes. A recurring trend is the nautical lantern and many homeowners are opting for a hanging lantern as a statement piece above seating areas such as a kitchen table. In homes close to the ocean, fixtures are often sealed with bevelled or seeded glass – diving deeper into the nautical theme.
Industrial yet homey
Considered to have a cold and clinical aesthetic, industrial designs are now being paired with rustic-inspired interiors in the home as a way to warm up this recurring trend. Light fixtures have been seen to incorporate steely accents and the use of mixed metals.
A retro resurgence
A return to furniture, textiles, colours and light fixtures that were all the rage in the 50s, 60s and 70s indicates a growing nostalgia for simpler times. Prismatic glass, fabric shades, brass accents and more traditional forms are becoming a preference. Don’t be surprised to find an overhead hanging light in place of the traditional table lamp.

n architect and designer, Mlondolozi “Mlo” Hempe is exploring design and using furniture and product design as the medium of choice in his new platform, Umongo. Q: How did your business start? A: My current design business and curating was started by chance but has always been a space I wanted to explore. I did a collaborative exhibition with Laduma Ngxokolo (knitwear designer) creating an interior space with the theme Xhosa-inspired living. The space we made generated a lot of interest. This is where the seed of Umongo was planted. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: The location of the building is quite unique, nestled between Woodstock’s creative hub and the string of creative spaces going up Lower Main, Observatory. This seemed to be the right spot to find art and design lovers searching for the latest designs. Q: How did you find your premises? A: It’s more like the space found me. I was searching for studio space to start the business in around March 2015, when a ceramist friend, Andile Dyalvane, recommended the space to me.
SEE FOR YOURSELF: Umongo 082 476 8597 umongoo.co.za
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: I went to view the space and I enjoyed the fact that it was not just a stand-alone space, but a community of designers. The history of the art deco building – an old cinema – spoke to my

architectural side where buildings can be repurposed for other uses. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: At the Bijou, my neighbours are artist Martin Lund, blacksmith and tool-maker Conrad Hicks, and Run Rabbit Run coffee shop. Down the road are Laurie Wiid of Wiid Design, and fashion designer Dennis Chuene. So there’s quite a mix of creatives around Obz. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Rental for my space is around R9,000 a month. Other spaces within the Bijou, range from R2,500 to R7,500 depending on size. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: In the beginning there wasn’t that much traffic because the main door was always closed, but the integration of the coffee shop Run Rabbit Run in the entrance space, has provided some walk-ins, approximately five people per week. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Not necessarily, but I would like to move to the CBD area which is closer to where I live, so I can have a closer relationship with my business and create a work-play-life environment. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, through my website. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: My most popular product is the wooden Potjie coffee table as it is a very unique item and quite unexpected, with a cross-cultural appeal.

Sandton remains property hot spot in Gauteng

This is according to Andrew Golding, CEO, Pam Golding.

and Pretoria has resulted in sharp increases in house prices, which is prompting some buyers to look further afield to areas like Midrand, which is equidistant from Pretoria and Joburg. With an easy commute via the Gautrain, Midrand is appealing for many residential property buyers.
Despite several years of rapid development there are still some 200,000m2 of commercial office space at various stages of completion. As a result, demand for residential accommodation in and around the Sandton city centre continues to grow and flourish. Golding says that an influx of new residents into Joburg

Managing a rental property

The incredible story of Curro S
ince listing on the JSE in July 2011 Curro has been one of the most talked about shares in the country. The company, which runs affordable private schools across South Africa, has grown its share price by more than 700% over this time.
Investors sometimes underestimate the amount of time and skill required to successfully manage a rental property – from repairing fallen curtain rods to managing electricity usage and collecting rent – it’s a time-consuming, sometimes menial and often frustrating task. Our advice: unless you really know what you’re doing, opt for an estate agency to manage your rental property and take the hassle out of your investment. After all, it is a ‘passive income’!
It has been a remarkable growth story, not only because of how incredibly lucrative it has been for investors, but because of what the company does. Schooling hardly seems like a sexy business, but led by a passionate CEO, Chris van der Merwe, Curro has proved to be the right idea at the right time.

he national average cost for a property in South Africa is R700,000, whereas the average price of a property within an estate is R2m – nearly three times the national average,” says Paul-Roux de Kock, analytics director, Lightstone. But where are the most expensive estates? Lightstone analysed the median value for a property within estates:

Curro’s story, however, began long before it became a listed company. Van der Merwe started Curro as a school of 28 learners in the hall of the NG Kerk Bergsig in Durbanville. The experiment nearly didn’t survive because he failed to meet his targets for growing learner numbers and he was paying teachers out of his bond. But he had a vision and he refused to be told that it wouldn’t work.

Providing affordable, high-quality education is without doubt South Africa’s biggest challenge, and Curro has shown that it’s not simply a problem that should be left up to the state to solve. There are real opportunities for the private sector to become involved, not simply out of charity, but because it makes good business sense.

Increase in residential building activity driven by apartments and townhouses
Y
ear-on-year growth in the volume of building activity in the planning phase of the South African market for new housing, remained in the low single digits in the first two months of 2016, according to Absa’s latest Residential Building Statistics report. The volume of activity in the construction phase of new housing showed relatively strong growth compared with a year ago, which was the result of a sharp improvement in one segment of the market on a
year-on-year basis since the start of the year. These trends are based on data published by Statistics South Africa in respect of building activity related to private sector-financed housing. From January to February this year the number of new housing units for which building plans were approved increased by 3,2% year on year (y/y), or 271 units, to 8,806 units over this two-month period. The construction phase saw the number of new housing units built increasing by 28,1% y/y, or 1,443 units, to 6,575 units
in the first two months of the year. This growth, however, was the result of strong growth in the segment for apartments and townhouses. The number of apartments and townhouses reported as being built increased by around 122% y/y, or 1,507 units, to a cumulative 2,739 units in January and February. The sharp increase in housing units built in this segment of the market compared with a year ago, may be attributed to reporting trends.
It is a remarkable example of how a business can be enormously profitable and serve society at the same time. Consider that around 30,000 of Curro’s 42,000 learners come from previously disadvantaged communities. Across all its schools, it maintains a matric pass rate of over 99%.
The first trade in Curro shares in 2011 was at R5,50 per share. They now change hands at around R40 per share
Curro employs 5,000 staff members, of which 2,700 are educators, and 38% of those are black. It also assists the state in the professional development of teachers. Those are what Van der Merwe calls the untold stories – the meaningful way in which the company is contributing to the future of this country. The telling thing is that these cannot be separated from the success of Curro as a business. It is such a great company precisely because of what it does. And that is a great lesson to all entrepreneurs.

About the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
A
growing number of young professionals are choosing to live in the CBD at the heart of this happening city, walking to work and enjoying the cosmopolitan urban lifestyle. “You really feel connected to what’s going on when you live here,” says Chris Reid, who moved here from Durban, “whether you’re going gallery hopping on First Thursdays or just walking down Bree Street and checking out the new stores and restaurants.” Urban regeneration over the last decade has resulted in a host of initiatives such as First Thursdays, when galleries and cafes stay open until late, Open Streets and City Walk Saturdays, that bring the streets alive and create a safe environment full of creativity that attracts a young and innovative crowd. Julien Xemard left Paris for Cape Town six years ago and loves it here. “Cape Town surely is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. The diversity of
open-minded people creates such a fantastic energy. The CBD vibe could be defined by First Thursdays; the variety of people in the street still blows my mind.” While Bree Street is the go-to place for the latest hip eatery or bar, and Long Street is the epicentre of trendy nightlife, the East City is establishing its own vibe at the less developed end of town. “Harrington Street particularly is about to take off in a big way,” says Chris, “it’s less sexy and slightly more gritty than the CBD proper, but with loads of young creatives working there and some great restaurants and bars, it’ll be coming into its own very soon.” Markets such as the City Bowl Market in Hope Street on Thursdays, the Oranjezicht City Farm Market in Granger Bay, and the Good Company Farmers’ Market in the Company’s Garden on Saturdays, bring fresh organic produce and street eats to the city. To reconnect with nature, the mountain and the beaches are never further than a short bus or taxi ride away.
What I love most about the CBD is you can have a semi-car-free lifestyle. I walk most places and then Uber or taxi everywhere else. It’s probably the one place in South Africa you can really live like that

CHRIS REID, RESIDENT
Agent commentary Q: What types of properties are available and what can buyers expect to pay? A: The CBD offers sectional-title developments with security and lifestyle components – gyms, pools and a fantastic coffee culture in the surrounding areas. Property ranges from bachelor units to oneand two-bedroom apartments, as well as magnificent penthouses. Most entry-level prices in the more popular developments such as Cartwrights Corner, Mutual Heights and the Icon, are in excess of R30,000/m2, while developments like the Taj continue to fetch prices in excess of R40,000/m2. The West City, which incorporates the Bree Street area, will currently achieve higher prices than the East City.
Q: What attracts buyers to the CBD? A: Cape Town’s CBD is unique in South Africa in that it offers residents a quality city life – it is safe, offers wonderful entertainment, restaurants, bars, shopping, coffee shops, art and a bustling nightlife supported by efforts like the First Thursdays and Moonlight Mass. Sports and events in the nearby Cape Town Stadium, the CTICC and the foreshore happen all the time. Table Mountain and Lion’s Head are ever present and the beaches are a stone’s throw away. The city is clean and public transport works. We’ve seen more and more people who work in Cape Town choose to dump sitting in traffic for a balanced and fulfilling city life.
Q: What changes have you seen in residential CBD property over the past five years? A: The central city has continued to flourish and develop over the last few years, and in many respects has consolidated its position as one of the best, functional “live, work, play” residential nodes in Cape Town. Initiatives like First Thursdays and Open Streets have been part of this great success story. The city centre continues to experience a growth in the number of people that wish to reside here. One of the main attractions has been the significant increase in quality restaurants, eateries, bars and cafes that now exist in the central city, giving it a truly international standard and feel.

at R3m including VAT. Houses are sized from 202m2 – 305m2. “Waterfront properties are a big draw card, and because of this position, The Lakes is an outstanding opportunity,” says Minnie. Kingfisher Terrace is a collection of modern two- or three-bedroom sectional-title garden cottages. It features 51 luxury properties, ranging from 143m2 – 175m2. Thirty percent of the houses in this phase have been sold pre-launch. Each garden cottage offers a contemporary and spacious feel with well-lit interiors, unspoiled views of the mountains, private garden areas, security and secure parking. All homes have access to the estate’s fibre-optic cable that provides highspeed internet and Voice over IP communications. Kingfisher Terrace prices start at R1,62m. There is a high demand for rental properties in the area, so investors can expect gross rentals of between R11,500 and R15,000 per month for these properties. All homes can be secured with a R25,000 deposit and no transfer duty is payable. New properties will be ready for occupation in 2017.
