Camps Bay You can’t beat Camps Bay. I moved here three years ago and it never gets old – in fact, I love it more every day. It’s the best place in the world. SAMUEL SITHOLE, RESIDENT

2

Ceres

Did you know? The town was named after the Roman goddess of agriculture, Ceres. An appropriate name as the valley where the town is situated is very fertile and is one of South Africa’s main producers of deciduous fruit.

T

here’s something about the Camps Bay strip, with its palm trees and pictureperfect white-sand beach, which even inspires locals to be in a holiday mood. Over the summer season three new restaurants have added to the temptation of slipping over the Nek for an irresistibly affordable mix of beach glitz and stylish sundowners.

La Parada del Mar

La Parada’s newest dolce vita setting in the elegant heritage building at the end of the Camps Bay strip encapsulates the

Miami beach vibe. Sit on the terrace for relaxed people-watching, or sit upstairs for the best views from the old-world balcony to the beach. In addition to the regular La Parada favourites, the menu focuses on beautifully plated seafood: stand-out tapas dishes are the Charred Octopus with tomato pesto, the Champinones Al Ajillo (garlic mushrooms with truffle oil and poached duck egg) and the Seared Sesame Crusted Tuna, but there’s so much more to tempt the appetite. Just leave space for the moreish Churros with dark chocolate dipping sauce.

Melissa’s Mantra Cafe

There’s an imposing staircase to scale, but the reward at the top is twofold: the excellent coffee and the most amazing views from the floor-to-ceiling windows, through the palms to the beach and out across the ocean, with the bustle of the road below barely intruding into the picture. Locals come in to enjoy breakfasts and light lunches in the comfortable airy space, though with the prime sunset views on offer here, it makes a good weekday evening out for cocktails, pizzas and bistro dishes such as Mussels in white wine, Tuna Ceviche, Pork Ribs, and Sirloin steak.

If Camps Bay glamour and peoplewatching is what you’re after, The 41 fits the bill. The black and white decor, GH Mumm Champagne bar, cocktails, and sushi bar are all about lively night life. The outside deck right on the pavement and looking over the beach is ideal for leisurely lunches. Lured by happy hour strawberry daiquiris and pina coladas, it’s easy to be tempted by the cosmopolitan menu into staying longer and letting sundowners segue into dinner for delicious meals such as Kudu Carpaccio, Ostrich fillet, Seafood Spaghetti, Burgers and Pizzas.

eaning “small bushes” in Dutch, Bosjes opened in mid-March this year and has quickly made a name for itself as one of the most beautiful venues in the Western Cape. Located at the foot of the Slanghoek and Waaihoek mountains, the Bosjes farm has been in the Botha and Stofberg family since 1831. It’s now open to the public for day and overnight visitors and offers stunning facilities for weddings and other celebrations. For those who want to spend the night, the farm boasts a barn-turnedguesthouse which features five luxury suites and a gorgeous pool in the centre. The house has been decorated in muted sandcoloured shades, and accents

of chartreuse and copper by interior designer Liam Mooney. Though each aspect of the farm is a work of art in its own, it’s the avant-garde chapel that draws the eye. Designed by South Africanborn Coetzee Steyn of Steyn Studios, the chapel is inspired by the bible verse Psalms 36:7: “How precious is your steadfast love, O God! The children of mankind take refuge in the shadow of your wings.” The white, winged roof surrounded by the splendour of the chapel gardens makes Bosjes a stunning wedding venue. For those looking for a bite to eat, the Bosjes Kombuis offers lunch Wednesday to Sunday from noon until 3pm. Consultant chef Pete Goffe-Wood, who designed the menu, says: “People can expect to see hearty rustic fare on the menu. Keeping true to the Kombuis name, we will make as much of the menu in-house – bread, pasta, ice cream, pickles, etc. Over time we will source as much of our

ingredients from the surrounding valley as is humanly possible. We will present a small, ever-changing menu that will reflect an artisanal slant.” Day-to-day operations of the kitchen will be in the capable hands of executive chef Kim Cox. The restaurant boasts high ceilings, glass walls and a wooden terrace, but the most remarkable feature has to be the blue-andwhite mural (the Bosjes Tree of Life) on the outside wall of the kitchen. “Artists Lucie de Moyencourt and Michael Chandler were briefed to design something interactive and also something that represents the heritage of the farm. They were given a list of 100 species of fauna and flora endemic to the farm, and each one is hidden in the mural,” says Carlen Vorster, marketing and events manager, Bosjes. Now that the farm is up and running, what’s next? “We’re investing in the local school down the road, not only rebuilding and furnishing it, but also equipping them with technology to be self-sufficient,” says Carlen.

Sommeliers giving back A new Cape wine club is working to broaden the appeal of the fruits of the vine WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

e chat with Gregory Mutambe, chairman, Black Cellar Club (Blacc).

Q: What is Blacc and how did it come about? A: After a glass or two of wine, of course! It’s a club of like-minded people who want to raise awareness around wine consumption, and careers in the wine industry, particularly among the black community.

It’s also about education. When people start drinking wine they often start with sweeter roséstyle wines. There’s nothing wrong with those, but educating the palate is important. If people understand the process of why wine tastes a certain way, they will be encouraged to try different types of wines. It’s all about understanding the product.

The name comes across as the club being exclusive to the black community, but that’s not the case as we have a number of white members. At the moment, we have around 60 members, and our plan is to grow nationwide; we’re slowly expanding to Durban and Johannesburg. All of us on the executive board have full-time jobs in the hospitality industry, so this is something we do in our personal capacity as a way of giving back.

Q: How are you going about spreading the word? A: We started a programme called Blacc Mondays, with excursions to wine estates to learn more about wine and the industry. We also have partnerships with educational bodies such as the Cape Wine Academy and the South African Brandy Foundation which are extending their support by offering courses for members of Blacc. It’s about empowerment through exposure and education.

Q: What are you trying to achieve with Blacc? A: Mostly, it’s about encouraging the enjoyment of wine. The per capita consumption of wine is much lower in the black community, and the growing black middle class often choose other drinks – beer, whisky and cognac – over wine, so we’re trying to change that.

Q: What is planned for the future? A: Along with more Blacc Monday events, we’re planning wine and food pairing evenings. We’re also looking at releasing our own wine under the Blacc label. It’ll be a top-class South African white wine as a way of raising funds for the ongoing work of Blacc.

My business neighbourhood Multidisciplinary design studio, Chocolate Sauce, is right at home in Woodstock WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED

W

hen Taariq Latiff graduated from CPUT, his thirst for creativity led him to start his own design studio in Woodstock, Chocolate Sauce. The business's services include industrial design, corporate branding, product design, web development and social media marketing, among others. Taariq tells us more about his journey. Q: How did your business start? A: W hen I left CPUT, there wasn’t a position accessible that fed my creative thirst. I worked a few jobs in the industry I was expected to, having studied industrial design, but I felt my creative side fading. I thought I’d take the risk and create my own position that would fulfil the gaps around creativity/ sustainability/community. I basically took the plunge, got thrown through the currents and ended up in a really cool spot in Woodstock working with like-minded individuals, all pursuing their own passions, being progressive in what they do and continuously inspiring those around them.

Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: It chose me in a sense. My lease at The Woodstock Exchange ran out and this space fell into place. Woodstock is ideal, though. It’s rough around the edges and in the cracks we find these sophisticated businesses and clientele floating around. It’s an area that thrives on art and progression, and all the gentrification politics give it a bit of spice. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I walked into the store formerly known as Smith and Abrahams and told the store manager I’d be looking for a space in the following few months. He told me they’d have a space opening up soon. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he brotherhood factor, which I’ve never experienced before in other spaces, and the fact that all of the guys here are the best at what they do. There’s a clothessampling studio just a room away; we do little projects and work on external projects together. Skill sharing is essential and a blessing in my instance. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Flat Mountain Coffee Roasters, Stevenson Gallery, Southern Guild and Woodstock Copy Shop.

Home is where the heart is. Find yours now. Search 1000’s of fresh properties everyday.

A home for everyone www.privateproperty.co.za

Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: It’s still pretty affordable if you work with it properly. I can retail and sublet, and they are able to handle a bit of noise. Like I said, it’s raw, but I work well with the resources under my feet. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: We’re above the Corner Store, and there’s a small showroom called Maylee separated by a 100mm wall and a door, so there are a few heads floating through daily. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yeah, offering showroom space to designers is next on the list, so we’re going to need additional office space. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Most of the studio work is online. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Design – whether it’s branding, a website or a clothing rail you need designed and manufactured, we offer creative solutions.

Flooring – the foundation of your home decor Rather than sell their homes, many people are choosing to stay put and renovate. Changing the floors is usually the first step.

Pringle Bay is the ‘new Noordhoek’

T

he Pringle Bay property market is at a similar stage to that which Noordhoek experienced 10 or more years ago, says Nicola Lloyd, sales agent, Pam Golding Properties. Located on the Western Cape’s Whale Coast, Pringle Bay has a countrified air about it, a long beach and homes that still offer value for money, says Lloyd. “It’s also seen more as a satellite suburb of the Cape Town metropole, just like Noordhoek was a decade ago. With Pringle House primary school growing, buses available to the Curro school in Onrus and two new schools in Somerset West and Strand, we’re

seeing an increase in young families moving here permanently.” The cost of property in the Cape Town metropolitan area is also encouraging buyers to look a little further afield to areas still within an hour’s commute of the city and offering good value for money. “There’s a marked increase in demand for vacant stands which are currently available between R375,000 and R600,000 for 600m2 and upwards, while homes in the R1,5m to R2,5m price band are selling well,” says Lloyd.

WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK

F

looring sets the tone and colour scheme for a home, and although flooring trends don’t date nearly as quickly as other decor trends, advanced technologies in this area mean appealing/ sustainable options are arriving on the market faster than they used to. Trend or not, you have to choose flooring for its potential longevity. You can’t see into the future, so choose a classic look which has stood the test of time, or opt for flooring which can, if necessary, be changed without breaking the bank. If sustainability is something you’re passionate about, factor that in, too. There are a number of products, from carpets to concrete, that look as fabulous as they are functional. Consider your lifestyle. You may yearn for that white carpet, but be practical if you have young children. Aside from budget constraints, look at your stage in life, the purpose of the room, and how much maintenance and cleaning you’re prepared to do.

The trends of 2016 are holding up pretty well in 2017. Homeowners still lean towards wide wooden planks in grey tones and low-sheen finishes. Wider, longer planks are still favoured because the overall appearance is more unified. But variations in patterns are creeping in, like planks that are not necessarily laid in perfect formation, but rather more informally using different plank widths. As people become more sustainability-conscious, the demand for local, recycled, reworked timber grows – whether it’s salvaged from a demolished building or yard, restored to its former glory after years under a carpet, or given a different treatment. The trend gurus cite texture, individualism and “natural” as growing trends, so woods are being treated differently to make the home stand out. Sometimes it’s the arrangement of wood into patterns such as herringbone or chevron, or textured treatments on long, wide planks which give a rustic, earthy, natural look. Handscraped wood gives a handcrafted look, and wire-brushed planks have

a vintage look – they also conceal any “new” scrapes and scratches. In terms of colours, it’s been about extremes such as super dark and super light, and bucking the grey trend. Dark-stained floors have been popular, but that trend is probably going to wane as it makes rooms appear smaller. As we follow the urban trajectory towards downsizing, we’ll be keen for our rooms to appear larger. Lighter woods and colours make the space appear bigger, brighter and more open, and they also don’t show every speck of dirt. More and more people are choosing to use sustainable flooring such as bamboo, and as our decor trends are very much about foliage, greens and botanicals, flooring which is light and natural, without being boring or predictable, is gaining popularity. Lightly stained floorboards also complement bolder designs and colours on walls and soft furnishings. Matte finishes are first prize, followed by the gloss-matte compromise, satin.

There are a number of products, from carpets to concrete, that look as fabulous as they are functional

One can’t ignore the actual realisation that junk status sends a major blow to consumer confidence and will have a longer-term negative impact on the economy. We emphasise the need for political and economic stability. For now, though, there’s no need to panic and it’s not all doom and gloom. We expect business as usual for the property market. SAMUEL SEEFF, CHAIRMAN, SEEFF PROPERTY GROUP

Where are first-time homeowners buying?

O

n average, more than 90,000 South Africans buy their first home each year. In 2016, about 72,000 buyers entered the property market for the first time; the year before saw about 105,000 people buying their first property, which reflects the poor performance of the property market last year. Most of the purchases were by people between the ages of 26 and 40. However, 913 people over the age of 70 and 624 under the age of 20 bought houses. Lightstone Property trends analysis also looks at where first-time property buyers are investing in their first homes. Affordability and ease of access to work, shops, schools and services are the primary drivers behind where new market entrants decide to buy.

An investigation of first-time homebuyer trends over the past two years shows that the suburbs most in demand for this market are in Gauteng and the Western Cape. Five of these suburbs in Gauteng – Protea Glen, Soshanguve KK, Soshanguve NN, Delft and Pelikan Park – offer a selection of low- to mid-value properties and are mostly newly built. Three of the top 10 suburbs – Equestria, Greenstone Hill and Paulshof – consist primarily of high-value sectional schemes and estates. The remaining two suburbs, Parklands and Weltevreden Park, are older and have been established for more than 15 years, offering mostly freehold-type properties.

SA homeowners worried about losing their homes

“I

t’s not a pleasant thought, but many SA homeowners are struggling financially and worried about losing their homes,” says Gerhard Kotzé, MD, RealNet estate agency group. “Even though there have not been any interest rate increases recently, the monthly repayment on most bonds is currently about 7% higher, in cash terms, than at the beginning of last year,” says Kotzé. “The repayments on credit cards, cars and other debts are also higher, and consumers are also paying more for food, water, electricity, transport, school fees and all forms of insurance. According to the latest stats available from the National Credit Regulator, there are 9,85 million South Africans with impaired credit records, which means they are seriously in arrears on at least one account. “So it’s no wonder really that an increasing number of people are concerned about being able to meet their financial commitments – and

about what would happen if they were to default on their bond repayments. “They need to understand that the banks don’t want to repossess their homes. They would far rather have a homeowner in place and some regular income from the property than be forced to incur the costs of repossession, and of securing and maintaining the home, as well as the total loss of repayments on the loan for several months or even years," says Kotzé. “Homeowners need to take their banks into their confidence if they are having financial difficulty, to show that they are willing to make the necessary arrangements to keep their homes. And thirdly, they should keep paying as much as they can, in order to keep the interest on the loan from compounding too rapidly. As a last resort, if you cannot make ends meet, you may want to consider selling your home and moving to a less-expensive one – or renting until your cash flow situation improves or rates come down again.”

Riebeek Kasteel Here’s what’s happening in property in the area

WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: PATRICK HEATHCOCK, ISTOCK, GOOGLE & SUPPLIED

I

t’s a small village and yet Capetonians flock here for weddings, weekends and days out, not to mention for the Riebeek Valley Olive Festival in early May. Visitors stroll through the quiet streets; enjoy the eclectic collection of art galleries, boutiques and decor shops; taste wines, olives and olive oils from the local estates; and dream of living the simple, rural life. Fifteen years ago the village was even quieter. “We have lived in Riebeek Kasteel since 2001 and we’ve witnessed significant growth and interest in the dorpie, the Valley as well as the greater Swartland region over the past decade or so,” says Ian Manley, Manley Communications.

THINGS TO DO: BEST IN FOOD: • Mama Cucina: for wood-fired pizzas and informal Italian cuisine • Bartholomeus Klip: for special occasions • Beans About Coffee: for top-quality coffee • The Alchemist: for bistro fare, a wide gin selection and boutique Swartland wines • Wicked Treats: for cakes, coffee and lunches • Pleasant Pheasant at Allesverloren: for simple family lunches • Eve’s Eatery and Bar: for paella nights and quirky decor • Red Tin Roof: for gastro-pub fare

• Browse the art galleries, boutiques and decor shops. • Taste wine at the local wine estates and at the Wine Kollective. • Taste olives at the Olive Boutique and at Kloovenberg Wine Estate. • Enjoy G&Ts on the front stoep of the historic Royal Hotel. • Visit Riebeek Valley Museum and Jan Smuts Museum.

NATURE NEARBY: • Bartholomeus Klip Private Nature Reserve • Hiking trails up the Kasteelberg • The 40km Kasteelberg MTB route • Swartland Birding Routes

The historic Royal Hotel used to be one of the few places to have lunch, but now it’s joined by a number of fun and quirky eateries, bistros and bars sprinkled all over the village, with several more on the wine estates and in the neighbouring village of Riebeek West. Despite this growth as a weekend destination, Riebeek Kasteel has managed to hang on to its genuine country village roots. “We spent 10 years looking to move out of Cape Town to a more rural and peaceful environment to realise our dream of opening a luxury guesthouse,” says Gareth DewarPienaar who recently moved to the area. “We looked at Stellenbosch, Franschhoek and Paarl and felt these areas were over-saturated with this kind of establishment. We also thought they had lost some of their rural charm, which the Riebeek Valley has in spades.”

Surrounded by wine and olive-growing estates, and with the wild and rocky Kasteelberg towering over the valley, the views are beautiful at every turn. The mountain nature reserve is another attraction. “We love the wide, open spaces with lots of places for bird-watching and botanising, and the chance to study the renosterveld plant kingdom,” says Fiona Hellman, Kasteel Kat Olives, who has lived in the area for 14 years. “It’s living in a working village, with no robots, no rush hour and no big shopping malls nearby.” The Riebeek Valley is just close enough for some residents to commute into Cape Town. It’s a scenic 45-minute drive to Century City, just 30km to Wellington and 45km to Paarl for shopping and schools. In the heart of the Swartland farm country, you can escape the summer heat and head over to the West Coast at Yzerfontein or Langebaan, and the Ceres mountains begin just across the valley, so there’s no shortage of beautiful places to explore. The Valley and villages have attracted a resident community of artists,

which has inspired Solo Studios, an annual open studio weekend in July. The Olive Festival in May is popular and attracts a large numbers of visitors, but some festivals are more about the local community. “The NGK Lentefees in September is a wonderful example of village life before it became trendy,” says Fiona. “It becomes a social gathering.” Another regular community event is The Village Market held in Riebeek West on the first Saturday of every month. “It’s simple and friendly. Nothing pretentious, and all profits go to charity,” adds Fiona. And while the Valley has welcomed the influx of visitors, at its heart it's still a working farming community which is close to the land. “There are days that the slow pace can be frustrating having come from the city,” says Gareth, “but then you sit on your patio with a glass of wine watching the sunset and you realise you have something very precious in the peace and tranquillity of small-town life that many people from the city can only dream of.”
