O
n 21 March, we’ll celebrate World Poetry Day, and it’s so fitting that this should coincide with Human Rights Day. Our country has a wealth of activist poets who were the voice of the oppressed during apartheid. Poets like Mzwakhe “The People’s Poet” Mbuli, Keorapetse William Kgositsile, Breyten Breytenbach, Mazisi Kunene used their words to fight the system and inspired many others to take up the pen in order to highlight injustices in their community. In honour of World Poetry Day and Human Rights Day, we invite you to share some of your favourite poems on the Neighbourhood Facebook page: facebook.com/YourNeighbourhoodZA.

Woodstock has got such a great vibe to it; it’s lively and warm while still having a real urban, gritty feel, which is why I think it has become so popular with small businesses in recent years

The Company’s Garden is a beloved park and heritage site which can have thousands of visitors a day. It happens to be one of Cape Town’s oldest sites, established over three centuries ago as a garden to grow fresh produce to replenish the many ships that would pass the Cape.

Babbo’s
Behind its shaded front courtyard on Roodebloem Road, Babbo’s opens out onto high-ceilinged rooms with wooden floors and a comfortable lounge. Italian owner, Andrea Angiolo sees it as a real neighbourhood eatery, serving locals simple breakfasts, great coffee, home-made pastas and crisp, wood-fired pizzas. It’s just down the hill from his popular seafood restaurant Pesce Azzurro, where he salt cures fresh tuna for the unusual tonnina and bean salad, a speciality of Elba. Other touches of home are his grandmother’s melanzane alla parmigiana recipe, gnocchi made with ricotta and the specially built wood-fired pizza oven. Andrea’s father, Volpe Angiolo, is a renowned Italian artist and his stunning paintings decorate the walls.

Hidden Leaf
Hidden it certainly is, behind a narrow doorway on Roodebloem Road and up a steep staircase, but walk out onto the
wraparound balcony and amazing views of Table Mountain and Cape Town spread out before you. Bianca Bezuidenhout and Warren Booysen have created a home away from home in the two comfortable dining rooms with plants and books, dreamcatchers and candles, and the space is just as welcoming for a casual lunch as for an intimate dinner. The focus is on the freshest local organic ingredients cooked simply, be it seared fillet steak, generous burgers (beef and vegan), chicken parmigiana, home-made ravioli or a satisfying vegan cottage pie.
Gather
This serene vegan cafe surprises with its ever so secret location: 196 Victoria Road is a beautiful historic building housing a holistic centre and art gallery. Weave your way to the back and discover an inner courtyard with a Zen-like calm. Open only for weekday lunches, Gather embraces local farm-to-table, plant-based food. Filippa Harrington and Daniela Puccini create a short versatile menu, using the crop surplus from local organic farmers. Fermented foods add zest and crunch to the varied open sandwiches, platters, salads and veggie bowls, and there are tasty baked treats to go with cold-brew coffee.

Lazy days at F Lourensford Lourensford Estate is racking up the gold medals for the mantelpiece, but this estate on the slopes of the Helderberg isn’t only about wine WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES IMAGES: SUPPLIED
ounded in 1709, Lourensford Estate is easily one of the most scenic wine estates in the country. Spread across 4,000ha of mountain, fynbos, forest and vineyard, the estate – owned by retail mogul Christo Wiese – produces a remarkably wide range of awardwinning wines, from Viognier to Merlot and Méthode Cap Classique.

With an enviable tally of medals at wine competitions both at home and abroad, 2016 was a particularly good year for the cellar. Leading the charge was the Limited Release Chardonnay 2015, a full-bodied blend of tropical fruit and creamy oak richness. One of just three South African wines to take home a Grand Gold Medal at the respected Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, it also picked up a Gold medal at the International Wine and Spirit Competition in London. Another from the Limited Release range that’s worth looking out for is the White Blend 2012. Driven by Sauvignon Blanc, but with splashes of Chardonnay and Viognier, this unusual blend won Double Gold at the 2016 Michelangelo International Wine Awards. Key to the success is the farm’s coastal terroir. Facing False Bay, with vineyards running up the Helderberg, “the cool conditions and influence of the Atlantic Ocean breezes contribute to the low pH and high natural acidity in our wines, ensuring they are complex and layered so they can last in bottle,” says Lourensford cellarmaster, Hannes Nel. His Limited Release Viognier and Lourensford MCC Brut Blanc 2011 are also worth seeking out at the estate, which is open daily for tastings. Yet while the wine is the star attraction of the estate, it’s certainly not the only reason to visit. The Millhouse Kitchen is a hit with locals, and dishes up bistro-style French and Italian cuisine, alongside excellent wood-fired pizzas. The nearby playground makes it especially popular with families. The weekly Lourensford Market (Sundays 10am3pm, alternate Fridays 4pm-9pm) also draws in foodies from far and wide, with 70 stalls offering light meals, arts, crafts and organic produce. The Coffee Roasting Company is also worth a stop, notably for the singleorigin coffee beans roasted on site. Although hidden behind the suburban streets of Somerset West, Lourensford Estate is well worth visiting on your next weekend escape into the Winelands.
Dinner for two Kyoto Garden Sushi caters for the perfect date night WORDS: CHARIS LE RICHE
IMAGE: CLAIRE GUNN
K
yoto Garden Sushi can be easy to overlook, especially with its rowdier neighbour around the corner. However, for those in the know, this Kloof Nek restaurant is the one of the best places to visit for sushi. The brainchild of American world traveller, Scott Wood, this award-winning Japanese restaurant opened its doors eight years ago. With chef Koshi Koyama in the kitchen, it’s now regarded as one of the best Asian restaurants in South Africa. The interior, designed by Scott himself, is sleek and minimal, and it’s easy to see that Scott was heavily influenced by his travels throughout Asia. The simple decor – complete with a water feature – oozes peace and tranquillity and comes together to create a serene oasis in the middle of bustling Kloof. The new set menu for two (R780 in total) is the perfect excuse for a date night. The six-course meal highlights the best aspects of Kyoto Garden Sushi. As you sit down you’re given a bowl of lightly salted edamame beans.
I suggest you only nibble on these to leave space for the six tantalising dishes that follow. First up was the tuna tartare with a touch of soy sauce. This light but flavourful taster was the perfect start to the night. The seaweed salad with shitake mushrooms and seared salmon followed and was fresh and tasty. Of course, you can’t go to Kyoto without sampling the sushi. The chef’s creation of sushi, sashimi and California rolls of prawns, salmon, tuna and linefish followed and was deliciously satisfying. Up next was the vegetable tempura, which was moreish – the only downside was that I had to share it with my partner. The fifth course, ramen noodles with prawns in a miso broth, was wholesome and strangely comforting – something I can imagine being a staple for me in the winter months. To end off the evening, we had the delightful white sesame seed ice cream. As low-key eateries go, Kyoto has a firm place in my heart and it’s easy to see why it’s one of the best Asian restaurants in South Africa. For a relaxed atmosphere and phenomenal food, be sure to visit.

T
he buzz of a shared studio space is ideal for a creative designer, as Lucy Mulima found when she joined Hope Street Studios last year. She tells us more about her business, Aya Goods. Q: How did your business start? A: A fter studying journalism, a stint in fashion PR and starting a natural skincare range using traditional ingredients from West Africa, I decided to try my hand at clothing. I’d attended a lot of workshops at the CCDI to get myself up to speed in terms of how a business should work and how I could harness my creativity to make a living. I had no real intention of working with African-inspired wax prints in the beginning, but it came easily to me having grown up with the fabric all around me in Zambia where it’s used for pretty much everything in day-to-day life. A friend could supply me with the fabric, so it was a no-brainer. Before I knew it, I had

a logo, patterns and a few garments. In August 2015, I launched my range of outerwear at Open Design and I haven’t looked back since. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: I was looking for a shared design studio space in the Cape Town CBD as I wanted to be central. I was closing my shop in Johannesburg (Work Shop New Town) when I heard about Hope Street Studios; the location was ideal – it seemed like fate. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I was tipped off by a creative acquaintance about a new shared space opening. I got in touch with Hannah Lavery who manages the space and luckily there was still availability. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: It’s amazing to be surrounded by creators in various disciplines. The space is always buzzing with people creating something new or chasing a deadline, which helps me stay focused on pushing the business forward, be it to produce or conceptualise new designs. Another exciting thing is everyone’s willingness to collaborate on projects, plus there’s always someone to bounce your ideas off or to get insight/advice from when needed. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: T here are 15 of us in the shared

studio, including jewellery makers, ceramicists, artists, fashion designers, photographers and more. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: T he rentals for our studios are reasonable, seeing as we’re splitting them between us all. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: I don’t have a shop here, but I see people at the design studio by appointment. I’m currently stocking some of my products at the Thabo Makhetha Collective at the African Pride Hotel (15 on Orange). Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: I’m looking to expand my brand presence by stocking more shops in Cape Town and Gauteng. I’m also looking at Europe and the US. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: My website has an online shop. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: T his varies, but there seems to be a consistent interest in the 13” laptop sleeve.

Local green building movement picking up speed
T
he Green Building Council South Africa (GBCSA) is gearing up for an exciting period as the local green building movement takes an exponential growth trajectory, one that's different in scale and scope from anything seen so far. As it enters its 10th year, and with sustainability expert Dorah Modise as its new CEO, the GBCSA has identified its next areas of impact as the residential and public sectors and is expanding its vision to include entire green communities and cities. So far, more than 230 formal green building certifications have been achieved in South Africa, mostly in the commercial property sector.
“Government is a property investor, landlord, tenant, accommodation provider and employer. These are all touch points that can benefit hugely from green building. Our metros, cities and towns can achieve big wins with green building – financially, economically and environmentally. It’s straightforward, and we’re here to show them how,” says Modise. The residential sector is already showing rapid uptake in green building. So far 3,500 homes have been registered with the GBCSA to target Edge (a green building rating tool) certification after only one year of the tool’s operation in South Africa.
Buying a property jointly may mean that you are able to comfortably afford the costs of home ownership, as you will be using the power of two people’s income rather than one. R1,3bn mixed-use development to launch in Umhlanga
A
new development named Umhlanga Arch has been announced by the Multiply Group, a Durban-based global investment company offering access to proprietary transactions in Africa.
prior to launching to the public, but it has also already attracted R350m in foreign investment to the region, confirmed an international hotel operator and engaged with a number of the country’s top retail brands.
Prominently positioned on the slopes of Umhlanga’s Ridgeside, this R1,3bn development is one of the largest mixed-use developments in the province and hopes to bolster tourism, stimulate investment into the region, further elevate Umhlanga and greater Durban to a world-class standing and facilitate significant job creation.
“Umhlanga Arch is going to be a place where you can live a full, productive day without having to venture from your address. Our vision for this development was to create a lifestyle for emerging entrepreneurs, serious businesspeople who are trying to establish a balanced home-work lifestyle and those individuals who frequent this area and aspire to live within it,” says, Terry Rosenberg, chairman, Multiply Group.
Umhlanga Arch has already sold 80% of the residential component
Southern Suburbs scoops 40% of the Cape metro’s property transactions
T
he residential property market across the Southern Suburbs, stretching from Woodstock to Tokai and incorporating predominantly the suburbs that lie above the M5 motorway, generated over R8,4bn in sales last year. "That," says James Lewis, MD, Seeff Southern Suburbs, "equates to about 40% of the total value of property transactions recorded for the Cape metro last year." Despite a slower market overall, Lewis says that the area remains very active, both in terms of sales and rentals with some neighbourhoods remaining busier than in the preceding few years.
The area encompasses about 31 smaller suburbs. Constantia, the largest, has the highest number of households, followed by Claremont, Rondebosch and Kenilworth. Some 2,948 transactions worth over R8,4bn, were recorded for 2016 at an average selling price of R2,86m, the highest on record. "That means that about eight property sales were concluded on average each day across the area," says Lewis. "Wellpriced properties below the R8m-R10m price range are still selling within four to six weeks, the lower end of the price scale obviously selling much faster while the upper end takes a bit longer."

Home decor trends 2017 A new year brings a fresh batch of home decor trends for you to explore, experiment with and adapt WORDS: MOLLY FITZ-PATRICK IMAGE: ISTOCK
J
ust like food and fashion, decor trends go through cycles. Each year brings about new, classic and revised trends, delivered to us through our favourite magazines, radio shows and TV programmes. Here are some of this year’s most popular trends. Consider introducing them into your home.
Greenery
The 2017 Pantone Colour of the Year is “greenery”. Luckily for us, this can be interpreted in many different ways in our homes. You can choose a wall or a room to paint in one of the many wonderful shades of green. Or you could be a bit more subtle and invest in greenery for the indoors – maybe a selection of succulents for your mantelpiece, or an indoor tree to be the focal point in your dining room.
Smart homes
This isn’t a new trend. It is, however, gaining a lot of traction this year as an increasing number of homeowners make their homes more automated and organised. Once you’ve got the hang of it, a smart home can be energy-efficient, which can save you time and money. Some of the most popular options for creating a smart home include smart thermostats, smart switches, voice-controlled hubs and smoke detectors.
Texture
When it comes to our senses, we often neglect touch, especially in our homes. Sure, we want our home to be aesthetically pleasing, but what about its texture? Adding texture to your home can really elevate it and make it more interesting, inviting and comfortable. It also allows you to incorporate different trends and elements into your home such as wood and stone, particularly marble, for hard textures. For softer textures, think of items such as a velvet couch, a macrame wall hanging, a cotton quilt, a faux fur rug or cushions.
Mixed metals
You’ve seen them all over Pinterest and at your local homeware shops, and now you can make them your own. Metals such as stainless steel, copper, bronze and brass can add a modern or classic touch to your home. What’s great about metals is that they are versatile and can be paired with almost anything. You do not need an ultra-modern home to introduce metals. In fact, introducing this trend to a more rustic-style home can often have more of an impact. You can find mixed metals in many forms now, such as copper cookware or light fittings, brass standing lamps or frames, stainless steel surfaces and bronze cutlery or doorknobs.

T
he centre of a thriving wine valley under the Langeberg mountains, Robertson is a charming small town that has retained the slow pace of times gone by. Capetonians flock to the valley for popular annual events such as the Wacky Wine Weekend and the Slow Food and Wine Festival. There’s a steady stream of holidaymakers of all nationalities touring the wine estates, kayaking, rafting and cruising on the Breede River, mountain biking, enjoying adventure sports and exploring the scenic surroundings. Most of the attractions are spread along the valley and the Route 62, and the town itself has a down-to-earth feel and a friendly local community. “People are very welcoming, helpful and polite,” says resident Lana Groenewald who manages The Robertson Small Hotel. “When I moved here from the city, life in Robertson took some getting used to. The closest thing to a traffic
jam comprises four cars pulling up to a four-way stop simultaneously and everyone courteously waiting for the other to drive first. People make time to share stories. I now enjoy that one has to add 15 minutes to every shopping trip. It’s astonishing how much news one can catch up on in the queue at the bank!” With jacaranda-lined streets and gardens filled with fruit trees, there’s a country feel to life even beyond the joys of an outdoor lifestyle with fresh local produce and award-winning wines at cellar prices. The traditional leiwater irrigation system still operates: open channels alongside each street run with water on designated days and everyone takes turns to divert water into their garden. There are plenty of sophisticated pleasures to be enjoyed too, with some excellent restaurants, world-class wines, food artisans selling at farmers’ markets and farmstalls, and a growing olive industry.
I love strolling through the rose and jacaranda-lined streets, admiring the array of quirky mailboxes. The people are genuine and welcoming. Many gardens have fruit trees and it’s not uncommon to see neighbours exchanging fruit, nuts or home-made preserves. LANA GROENEWALD, RESIDENT
