here’s just something about winter that makes me want to go to the theatre and watch a good show. Pieter Toerien’s production of Hamlet is definitely on my list of must-see shows this month. Directed by Fred Abrahamse, this production is inspired by one of the earliest recorded performances of Hamlet which took place on a ship off the coast of Africa in 1608. This unique telling is currently on at Theatre on the Bay and will run until 29 April. The show features an allstar cast including Michael Richard
and Marcel Meyer. Book online via Computicket (goo.gl/qPf9c3). Happy theatregoing!

I
remember watching Cartoon Network in 1998 and seeing the first promos for The Powerpuff Girls. It was the beginning of an obsession that lasted many years. I loved the action, the adventure and the excitement, and that they were girls. The distinct personalities of Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup, their strength and unique selfassuredness struck a chord with audiences around the world.
Franschhoek
Did you know? Franschhoek is South Africa’s food and wine capital. It’s interesting history, beautiful architecture, word-class wine estates and variety of top restaurants, cafes, delis and other eateries have all contributed to this title.
The Powerpuff Girls saw a revival last year when the cartoon was rebooted. Powerpuff Girl fever is far from over. In fact, the Powerpuff Girls are right here in Cape Town with the Powerpuff Girls (PPG) Art Factory.

A partnership between Cartoon Network and the free cultural experience, First Thursdays Cape Town, the PPG Art Factory is an innovative and entertaining local art exhibition that celebrates the best aspects of The Powerpuff Girls – creativity, empowerment, expression and fun. Not only does
Also on show at the exhibition is the Powerpuff Girls Safe Space bench, which is a symbolic safe space. Rock Girl has created many of these and they can be found around Cape Town and across the country. The PPG Art Factory launched on 6 April and will run until 2 May at 91 Loop in Cape Town. The exhibition consists of 10 unique Powerpuff Girls screen prints. The local artists and illustrators were asked to express their own unique identity and culture by reimagining the cartoon characters. Exhibiting artists include Thandiwe Tshabalala, Ello Xray Eyez, Qondile Dlamini, Jade Klara, Tyla Mason, Ndumiso Nyoni, Karabo
Poppy Moletsane, Anja “Nanna” Venter, Saint Rose (Kgabo Mametja) and Jeanne Fourie. There will be 10 screen prints of each design available for purchase; half the proceeds will go to the artists and the other half will go to Rock Girl South Africa. I was lucky enough to attend the launch, and when I saw the massive dolls of Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup at the entrance of 91 Loop Street I felt that old rush of delight I used to get when The Powerpuff Girls theme song would start. The charismatic Toya Delazy was the musical act of the night and performed her local version of The Powerpuff Girls theme song which she produced last year for the global launch of the new cartoon series. It was a fun evening, full of nostalgia, creativity, amusement, made all the more enjoyable by the important cause that the PPG Art Factory is involved with. You have about another two weeks to catch the exhibition. Don’t miss it!

hen Mr Singh of the Leeu Collection decided to open an Indian restaurant at the top of Franschhoek’s main street, he chose chef Vanie Padayachee to run it. “I was at Le Quartier (Francais) for the last 20 years on and off; that’s home – it’s where I grew up as a chef,” Vanie says. “Mr Singh wanted authentic North Indian. I’m a Durban girl. I knew South Indian, Sri Lankan and Durban Indian, but that’s chalk and cheese. So off to India I went for two months and worked with a tutor and also worked in some of the top Delhi restaurants in the evenings: The Lodhi hotel, Indian Accent, Delhi Club House. They all taught me so much.” She learned all the flavours and techniques then came back and practised her dishes by cooking for Mr Singh. “I needed a true palate to see anywhere I was going wrong. That helped me create this menu.” The Marigold menu is filled with mouth-watering dishes, from typical street food starters (don’t miss the Palak Chaat, crispy spinach leaves in chickpea batter) to tandoori dishes, curries and biryanis, so much so that we wanted to order one of everything. We were saved from overindulgence by the suggestion of a thali, where the chef selects a platter of several favourite dishes, plus dal, rice, raita and a flatbread. Going for one vegetarian thali and one with meat was the perfect combination and really allowed us to explore the subtle spice differences between the Aloo Ghobi Adrakhi and the Aloo Tikki Chole Chaat (potato patties with chickpea curry), and between the Mutton Rogan Josh and the Tandoori Lamb Kebab. We also loved the buffalo milk paneer, the Amritsari linefish (delicate and zesty with chaat masala), the Butter Chicken, and the beautifully light and flaky roti. The desserts were perfection on a plate, not too sweet; the vegan Coconut and Fennel Seed Kulfi with tandoor baked pineapple was itself worth driving to Franschhoek for. Vanie takes pride in catering to almost any dietary requirement. Too authentic perhaps to be labelled fine dining, Marigold is fine in every other way, from the exact spicing and attention to detail in every dish, to the comfortable contemporary decor and the excellent service.
Fine field blends Winemakers love to wax lyrical about how great wines are “made in the vineyard”, and for a handful of wines that philosophy rings particularly true WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES
IMAGE: SUPPLIED & ISTOCK
W
hile much of the winemaker’s skill lies in fermenting grapes from individual parcels of vineyard and blending them into a wine greater than the sum of its parts, “field blends” are different. Dictated entirely by the inter-planting of different cultivars in the vineyard, “This is how vineyards used to be planted,” says acclaimed Swartland winemaker Eben Sadie. “The farmers would plant a mix of vines among each other, like an insurance policy, to ensure they would always have a crop each year.” Today, most winemakers prefer to keep their cultivars and clones separate, leaving the blending for the cellar, but a handful of blended vineyards still exist. Grapes from the different cultivars are typically harvested and fermented together, allowing the vagaries of the vintage to dictate the final make-up and style of the blend. Perhaps the most famous local example is the ’T Voetpad from Sadie Family Vineyards: a white blend incorporating Semillon Blanc, Semillon Gris, Palomino, Chenin Blanc and Muscat d’Alexandrie (Hanepoot). Sourced from a 1,4ha vineyard on the slopes of the
Piketberg Mountain, the vines here were planted between 1900 and 1928. Eben, who recently won the prestigious 2017 Winemakers’ Winemaker Award from the UK-based Institute of Masters of Wine, says the trick is for winemakers not to overshadow the grapes. “You must move very carefully in the cellar when you work with these vineyards. It requires an understanding of the history of that place: the families, the history and the soil. In your ambition to make a better wine you’ll destroy the wine.” Another excellent choice is The Field Blend from Stark-Condé in the picturesque Jonkershoek Valley. When faced with what to plant on a tricky 2ha vineyard with 11 different soil types, a mix of cultivars turned a challenge into a selling point. Roussanne and Chenin Blanc form the backbone of The Field Blend, with a few rows of Verdelho and Viognier bringing acidity and aromatics. The grapes are picked on the same day and fermented together in barrel. The result is a stellar white blend with a subtle oak backbone, bright fruit and wonderful aromatics. It’s an excellent food wine, and Stark-Condé’s only true “estate wine” with all grapes grown and vinified on the farm.

My business neighbourhood Style-conscious men can now find funky Nic Harry socks in Tyger Valley WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

partnered with a company online to help promote the product launch and within the first 10 days we sold hundreds of pairs. We rolled our capital until the business was large enough to sustain myself and my co-founder, and now we work on it full time with our team. Q: Why did you choose Tyger Valley for your new store? A: We felt that Tyger Valley gave us exposure to an exciting new customer base. We’re always on the lookout for potential “sockaholics” and styleconscious men. Tyger Valley has a lot of promise and there was a definite gap for us to fill. We’ve brought a unique, new type of style to the area. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We approached Tyger Valley and they offered us a pop-up store for a few months. Fortunately, Tyger Valley then had a permanent space become available and we jumped at the chance.
D
aring, stylish and colourful, Nic Harry socks have turned a dull necessity into an expression of style. Nic Haralambous tells us about the new store in Tyger Valley. Q: How did your business start? A: In 2012, I sold my technology company to Mxit and decided I wanted to do something tangible next. I set a target of spending R5,000 capital and taking six weeks to build a business. If it failed, I’d take another R5,000 and start again. Nic Harry was the first business I tried. I had three sock designs sampled, took those designs and built a website to sell them. I
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: A lot of work goes into an “ideal” location. Your team has to work hard to create the right atmosphere for potential customers. Overall, we felt that the type of shopper in the centre was one we wanted to speak to and engage with on a daily basis. So far, we've been right and have been styling up a storm since we moved upstairs.
Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: Our location is premium space and the rental reflects this. Our prices are reasonable for a premium, locally made product that is unique and limited edition. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: It’s hard to tell the exact number. We have five stores nationwide, so the foot traffic varies greatly from location to location. Tyger Valley is up there as one of the busier spaces. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Constant expansion is our plan. We're looking abroad to expand our e-commerce presence. Locally, we’re working hard on our existing five stores. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: A bsolutely, nicharry.com is where we started this crazy business. We’re an e-commerce company at heart and digitally minded from top to bottom. We ship anywhere in the world and offer free shipping nationwide for orders over R350. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: Our Apartment Block Bamboo socks are our most popular item. They're stylish, comfortable and extremely healthy for your feet.
SEE FOR YOURSELF: Q: Who are your neighbours? A: The Wimpy is right across from us. Poetry, L’Occitane, Zara and Browns are all near us. Good company to keep.

Baby, it’s cold outside Get your home winter-ready with these easy tips WORDS: CHARIS LE RICHE IMAGE: ISTOCK
T
here’s been a not-so-subtle dip in morning and evening temperatures lately – a sure sign that winter is here and we’d better be prepared. Here are our top tips to help you get ready for winter.
Outside
Clean your gutters Now is the perfect time to clean your gutters – before the heavy winter rains arrive. You don’t want to end up with rainwater in your home because your gutters were so clogged that the water had nowhere else to go. Inspect your roof Check your roof for any leaks or damage, and fix them before the rains arrive. Also inspect all windows and doors to ensure they’re properly sealed.
Inside
Layers There’s nothing better than snuggling up on the couch when it’s cold outside. Get your couch winter-ready with a few throws. It’s an inexpensive way to make your lounge cosier while adding different textures to the decor. This also works well in the bedroom. Invest in rugs If you have floor tiles throughout your house, add a few rugs in key areas. Look for textured rugs that’ll protect your feet from the cold. Before you buy your rugs, though,
make sure the colour and patterns complement the style of your room. The fireplace A fireplace is a great way to keep your house warm, and an increasing number of people are seeing the benefits of having one in the home. If you already have a fireplace, be sure to stock up on wood and get it cleaned and inspected.
HOME COMFORT: Solar control double glazing, as is the case with PG SmartGlass X2, improves insulation by up to 70%. In summer, natural light is allowed in – creating a more airy interior space – while up to 66% of heat from the sun is repelled, cooling the house. In winter, heat is kept in the home by the superior insulation performance, maintaining its warmth. This reduces the need for air-conditioning and heating systems, in turn decreasing energy costs. PG SmartGlass is SANS 10400 Part XA compliant, with four options available (Standard, Plus, Elite and Superior). These can be selected according to the direction windows face and the functions they assist with, such as noise or solar insulation. pgsmartglass.co.za

Slight uptick in percentage of foreign property buyers
T
he FNB Estate Agent Survey for Q1 2017 pointed to a slightly higher estimate of foreigners buying homes in SA, compared to the previous quarter. From 4,45% of total home buying in Q4 2016, the estimated percentage of home buyers believed to be foreigners in the Q1 2017 Estate Agent Survey rose slightly to 4,89% of total home buyers. It was also marginally higher than the 4,67% estimate in Q1 2016. Using a four-quarter moving average for smoothing purposes, the estimated percentage of foreign home buyers for the four quarters up to Q1 2017 was 5,23%, a slight increase from 5,18% for the four quarters up to the end
of 2016, but up from 4,75% for the four quarters up to Q1 2016. The aggregated response to the survey showed a mild bias towards more foreigner home buying, even though a rand strengthening through 2016 to early-2017 has made South African homes more expensive to foreigners in their own currency terms. In rand terms, average house price inflation by February 2017 was 0,8% year on year. However, in foreign currency terms, the FNB House Price Index increased by 24,3% year on year in euro terms, by 19,3% in dollar terms and by 36,5% in pound terms (the Brexit impact) year on year in February. This means property in SA has become notably more costly for many foreign buyers.
Rosebank has become a very vibrant, multicultural node that is especially popular with young professionals working in the area as well as executives who commute to Johannesburg for work purposes from other parts of the country. The suburb caters to most budgets and needs as it offers buyers a very broad choice of apartments, from starter studios or older one-bedroom flats at around R1m to super luxury penthouses for up to R18m, although most sales are between R1,5m and R3m. Hyde Park is one of Sandton’s most desirable addresses
O
f all of Johannesburg’s suburbs, Hyde Park and Sandhurst, both of which are situated on the doorstep of Sandton, have the strongest claims to being the most desirable addresses within the Gauteng region. According to Rupert Finnemore, regional MD, Pam Golding Properties Gauteng, these two suburbs are highly prestigious and have long been regarded as the home of Johannesburg’s elite. “Many of the city’s people aspire to live in Hyde Park and Sandhurst, and the immense status of owning a property in the area, as well as its geographically desirable location, have ensured the ongoing popularity of homes there,” says Finnemore. “Although situated just minutes from high-density Sandton, many of the properties have remained of substantial size with large, well-established gardens.”
However, some of the properties within the area have been subdivided and developed into sectional title complexes or estates. Finnemore notes that more than half the properties in the two suburbs, both of which are more than 50 years old, are now sectional title developments. “This diversity in property types ensures that there is a wide range of different property options available for those interested in acquiring property in either Hyde Park or Sandhurst. Sectional title properties represent a more affordable option for many people and these types of homes are consequently in strong demand,” says Finnemore. “Considering the rapid and ongoing development of Sandton, and the ongoing desirability of suburbs such as Hyde Park and Sandhurst, we expect properties in the area to hold their values well.”

Bo-Kaap
Zainie Misbach, doyenne of Cape Malay cuisine, tells us about her neighbourhood
WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
I was born here and I still love the Bo-Kaap. It's close to the vibrant and cosmopolitan city. I do tours, greeting many people and it makes me happy and proud to be part of this community. ZAINIE MISBACH
IMAGES: ISTOCK & SUPPLIED
Z
ainie Misbach has lived her whole life in the Bo-Kaap, from the apartheid years when her childhood home was a safe house for political activists, to today when gentrification is a threat to her community. She’s passionate about preserving the Cape Malay culture and she’s spreading the word through interactive Bo-Kaap Cooking Tour where visitors learn about the history of the area while they fold samosas, roll rotis and stir curries. “I grew up right at the top, at the Noon Gun, the last house. From my bedroom as a child I could see the harbour, Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak and Lion’s Head – amazing panoramic views – and we had a garden full of every fruit tree you could think of,” says Zainie. “Living down here in Rose Street I really miss the views. When I moved in here I took a jackhammer to all the concrete in the yard at the back to turn it back into a garden. I planted trees and I look after the garden now. It’s a communal garden for all the houses that back onto it.” Owning her own home is testament to her determination and hard work. “I applied at the city council for a house when I got married. We went to Johannesburg for three years then returned, and I was living at my parents’ house where I had my first child. I was still looking for a house and was told one had finally become available on Rose Street. I didn’t want to move down here, can you believe it? I raised my four kids here and once I’d paid rent for seven years, I was eligible to buy my home. By that time I was a single mother and I had to convince the
City Council to allow me, as a woman on my own, to buy the house. Back then there were clauses that you had to live in it another seven years before selling. I’ve lived here ever since.” Rose Street is on the city periphery, so one side is the CBD and the other is the Bo-Kaap. “Gentrification is a big issue that we’ve fought for more than 10 years, when some apartments were sold to a foreigner who evicted all the families renting,” says Zainie. “Rose Street is the main area affected. I used to know everyone on this street, but now there are only eight Cape Malay families in the whole long street. The rest is owned by foreigners for B&Bs and holiday accommodation.” But an even bigger threat to the character and culture of the area are the huge apartment buildings being constructed on the city side of Rose Street. The Cape Malay community is still strong with good schools – which some of Zainie’s grandchildren attend – an active community centre, mosques and an old age association. “Ramadan brings people together, not just with fasting but you are also constantly giving. There’s a very strong culture of helping your neighbour that is still prevalent. You know who the people in need are,” says Zainie. “Even though other Malay people from Mitchells Plain or Athlone might only visit at New Year, they still feel that BoKaap is their home place where their memories are, where their origins are. There is resentment in the community when anyone sells their homes to foreigners – there’s anxiety that we are losing our Bo-Kaap.”
ABOUT ZAINIE MISBACH: Zainie Misbach is a Bo-Kaap local with strong community ties and a passion for preserving the Cape Malay culture. She has more than 30 years’ experience in Cape Malay cuisine. From opening the first Cape Malay restaurant in South Africa (Biesmiellah Restaurant) and her family's Noon Gun Restaurant, to consulting on MasterChef South Africa, she now runs Bo-Kaap Cooking Tours.
