FRESHLYGROUND
Off The Grid This festival aims to be the feel-good event of the year WORDS: CHARIS LE RICHE IMAGES: SUPPLIED
I
n its third year and back with a fresh new name, the Off the Grid Music Festival will be taking place at the Camphill Village West Coast on Saturday, 25 February. With all proceeds going to the Camphill Village West Coast, home to approximately 90 intellectually disabled adults, this promises to be the feel-good event of the year. We chat with Camphill Village West Coast MD James Sleigh to find out more. Q: How did the Off The Grid festival come about? A: In 2014, for the 50th anniversary of Camphill Village, we organised our first music festival. It was so popular that we decided to make it an annual event. The name “Off the Grid” is a play on our goal of becoming entirely self-sufficient, and also that we are out of town.

Q: What can festivalgoers expect? A: A fun, laid-back afternoon and evening, with wonderful music, fantastic food and great company. There’s a great line-up of bands, so
it’ll be a treat musically. Camphill Village also grows organic produce and makes natural cosmetics from the produce we grow, and these products will be on sale. We also have a dairy and bakery, where we produce natural organic products. There will also be food trucks that’ll offer a wide variety of yummy and healthy food, as well as hunger-busters.
Q: What are the highlights? A: Just look at the line-up: Freshlyground, Albert Frost, Majozi, Jackal and the Wind, Akhona, and The Bootleggers. The Bottleggers have played at all of our festivals and they really get the crowd on their feet. Freshlyground is back because this festival is a highlight for them. And everybody’s darling, Majozi, will be on stage. Each band is unique, was chosen with great care and they all play with great energy and passion. Q: What will the funds raised by the festival help with? A: The funds raised will assist us to realise our dreams of becoming self-sufficient, enabling us to offer more places to people with intellectual disabilities who are in need of a safe home, meaningful work and a place in society. At Camphill Village, we’ve created a safe environment where people with intellectual disabilities can lead a normal life, and do meaningful work which enhances their self-esteem. Q: What else we can expect? A: As it is a carbon neutral event, some of the festivalgoers will cycle from Cape Town as part of an awareness campaign to draw attention to sustainable energy. And over and above all the goodness, expect a great party.

Kid-friendly restaurants with a holiday vibe for a Cape Town staycation WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

CAFE ROUX
I
t’s a long first term this year, so why not include a family holiday vibe into the weekends to keep you going till Easter! These kid-friendly restaurants in beautiful places capture the holiday spirit and are designed for leisurely family lunches – the adults can kick back and relax over good food and wine, while the kids have plenty of space to run and play in-between treats. Book ahead as they’re all busy at weekends.
Cafe Roux, Noordhoek Farm Village
“Kids love the outdoor space and freedom when coming to Cafe Roux,” says co-owner Lindi Green. “On weekends you’ll find a kids’ activity and a dedicated pancake stand for the little people.” There’s a big open play area with jungle gyms all in view of the cafe tables, where the adults can sit back with a glass of wine and a luscious home-made burger, perhaps
topped with melted Gorgonzola, or one of the generous salads. In-between running wild, kids munch on homemade free-range chicken strips and chips, or the kids’ burgers, toasted sandwiches and other favourites.
Jonkershuis, Groot Constantia
A favourite place for families to get together are the outside tables at Jonkershuis beside the wide lawns, where kids can run around while their parents take their time over their meal and chat. The menu has plenty of choice including Cape Malay curries and tasting platters, and kids love the burgers and the frozen slushies made with fresh fruit juice. A stroll to the pond to visit the white ducks is part of the ritual. Soaking up the views and the sense of history that pervades the wine estate is guaranteed to relax you into holiday mode.
Die Damhuis, Melkbosstrand
Head to the beach at Melkbos for an extra splash of summer holiday play. Lunch at Die Damhuis is perfect for small kids; there’s a spacious outdoor play area of beach sand complete with a lighthouse jungle gym. Courtyard tables are scattered around this so you can sit under an umbrella with sand in your toes and enjoy the view of the ocean. The menu covers everything from seafood to steaks and pork belly. The home-made fish cakes and pickled fish are a speciality, while kids will love the hake and chips and chicken nuggets.

A sip and a swirl on safari Guests lucky enough to enjoy a five-star safari with Singita also get to sip on some of the finest wines South Africa has to offer, and one man holds the keys to the cellar WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

H
ow do you go about buying and cellaring wine for thousands of well-heeled guests, sipping and swirling in far-flung safari lodges spread across East and Southern Africa? For Francois Rautenbach, wine director for award-winning safari company Singita, it’s just another day at the office. Q: Where and how do you mature your wines? A: There’s a cellar at each lodge, but we’ve extended maturation facilities outside Stellenbosch, where we store around 70,000 bottles of wine at a time. From here it travels by refrigerated container to our lodges in South Africa and East Africa. We usually mature wines for at least five years, although some Pinot Noirs and Cinsauts are released a little younger. The beauty is that we usually have three or four vintages of the same wine, so we can look at which the guests will best enjoy today. Q: What trends have you picked up, in terms of popular wine styles? A: The overall interest in white wine is barrel-fermented wines, whether it’s Chenin, Chardonnay or blends. For reds we’re still dominated by Cabernet-based wines, particularly where there’s a uniquely South African take, with perhaps Shiraz
or Pinotage blended in. There’s also enormous interest from our international guests in Pinotage. That’s thanks to the exponential improvement in the varietal in recent years, and because we allow them adequate time to mature. Q: You’re an enthusiastic buyer at the annual wine auctions. What’s the appeal? A: The Nederburg Auction is a way to access some of their extraordinary wines not offered elsewhere. Many of their sweet wines, which are often world-class, are only available at the auction. At the Cape Winemakers Guild auction we’re specifically purchasing to mature long term. They’re usually very dramatic wines, but they’re ideal for guests looking to sample unique wines they won’t encounter elsewhere. Q: Which local wine regions and styles are you most excited by? A: In terms of Chardonnay, the Elgin Valley has really done some exciting stuff. It’s an area that our guests have a lot of interest in, because a lot of South African Chardonnays have a fresher, crisper style to them. There are also some exciting things happening with Grenache and Cinsaut.

My business neighbourhood SSA Ads, a 100% black-owned advertising company, finds its new home in Philippi WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED
N
icholas Xhonxa saw the need for a dynamic advertising company focused on promoting brands to the townships. Together with his brother he started SSA Ads with the vision of “building brands beyond advertising”. Last year, he was named top student in the University of Stellenbosch Business School (USB) Small Business Academy programme, a sponsored nine-month business course aimed at strengthening small businesses in townships. Q: How did your business start? A: My brother and I started this ad agency in 2015 having identified a gap in the market. Many of the below-the-line marketing and promotional campaigns are run in townships and that’s where we come in handy. At the core of our value proposition is how we understand township dynamics,

cultural trends and the values and norms of our black communities. When doing brand activations in our townships we raise brand awareness and know which areas respond to certain brands. The Small Business Academy programme helped shape us and get us focused on a clear marketing strategy and business plan. Q: Why did you choose this area for your business? A: We have just moved into our new office in Philippi Village, at the Business Place container terminal. This location has just been developed to house small businesses in the Cape Peninsula. It’s just across the road from Gugulethu where we first started our business. Q: How did you find your premises? A: It’s our job to know what’s going on in the area. I’d been monitoring the development of the new Business Place since it started. The first phase opened last year and we got in with the second phase of entrepreneurs at the beginning of this year. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he setup of the Business Place is to support small businesses. There’s a well-equipped boardroom that all tenants can book for more formal meetings and functions. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Our neighbours are small businesses that operate across industries.
5
Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: Rentals are structured to suit the starting businesses. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: T he nature of our business is that we go to our clients to pitch and present, and once we start a campaign, we roll it out where the client requires us to. Very few clients come to us. However, we have a high volume of calls. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Currently, we operate in the Western Cape, Gauteng and the Eastern Cape. We plan to expand our Gauteng presence by getting operational staff by mid-2017. Creating employment is our mission, as we want to contribute to the reduction of unemployment in our communities and focus on attracting young graduates. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We’re building our website at the moment. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Brand activation, brand development and the supply of promotors for campaigns in the townships.

The home office
Working from home saves you money, lowers your carbon footprint and improves your family life WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK
T
he look of a home office is strongly dictated by the actual space available. Factors such as whether you’ll have clients visiting your office and the nature of your business will also dictate certain fittings. If you have a choice, opt for an office that is outside the main house. Even if it’s just across the courtyard, it physically and mentally separates work from play, and creates an invisible line for family to understand the difference, too. It also makes it easier to lock the office door on Friday and not return until Monday morning. One of the joys of working from home is the flexibility. Nobody can see you in your pyjamas at 5am finishing that tax return or writing an article. You also have a better work-life balance, it’s easier to juggle children’s commitments, your commute is limited to crossing the courtyard and your office can be pretty much as you dream it. Creating a smart workspace is important. Don’t recreate that dingy cubicle you left behind at your old
smartglass-neighbourhood-hp.indd 4
office; create a space you really like. A small room in white, with a concrete floor, even concrete shelving, blinds, a trestle table, a chair or two, large industrial-type light fittings and a white filing cabinet looks good and exudes calm for most businesses. If need be, buy second-hand items and spray paint or reupholster them. Invest in quality technology like reliable electrics, air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, computers and lighting. Although a good home office needs to be functional first and beautiful second, it’s possible to have the best of both worlds. Lighting is so important. Capitalise on natural light, but don’t neglect targeted lighting for grim days or late nights. Move your desk close to the windows and run it parallel to the panes. A garden can be soothing to look at while you work. Storage is essential and often difficult to make attractive. Depending on your needs (and whether you’re a naturally tidy, organised person or not) consider restoring a lovely old wardrobe, so that everything can be hidden away.
Consider creating a little “me corner”, which can also double as a clientmeeting zone. There’s something liberating about being able to leave your desk and move over to your chill corner. It could have a comfy chair, a little coffee table/ottoman and a great reading lamp. Whether you’re the catnapping type or disciplined enough to take 45 minutes for a lunch break, it’s important to take a breather in the day. Finally, look at the flow of your office. Make sure you don’t have to go around furniture to reach the printer. Streamline the space for your needs. A giant white board or pinboard means you can update your life easily.
HOT TIPS: • Add greenery. Plants make people happier and they can survive a few of days without water, so you won’t need to visit the office over the weekend. • Consider getting a small fridge or coffee machine.

Durbanville Blogger and author, Tertia Albertyn, tells us about her neighbourhood WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: NATASHA LASSEN & SUPPLIED
I love that Durbanville has a small-town feel – the personal aspect – with all the big town conveniences and services. Driving home from town on the Vissershok Road you see the whole of Durbanville spread out in the valley; it’s so beautiful. TERTIA ALBERTYN
C
o-founder of Nurture, an egg donor and surrogacy programme, Tertia Albertyn, voiced her struggles with infertility through blogging and a published book. When she eventually conceived twins after her ninth IVF treatment, she and her husband returned to her childhood neighbourhood, Durbanville. She tells us about the area. “We rode our bikes and played in the field. The only rule was that we had to be home when it got dark. It was idyllic. And then I went to UCT and suddenly Durbanville was far too boring and suburban. I was now cool and hip and alternative (and a total idiot, but I didn’t know that then). So as soon as I could, I moved out of Durbanville. First to the Southern Suburbs, later to Sea Point, then, when I met my husband, to Table View. However, when I got pregnant, I wanted to move back to Durbanville. I didn’t care about cool and hip and alternative. I cared about big gardens, safe neighbourhoods and good schools,” says Tertia.
“My husband and I built our first home in D’Urbanvale where we lived for six years, and then we moved to Belvedere Estate in Durbanville Central. We lived in our first house there for another six years and recently bought the larger house next door as it was better suited to the multitude of children we now have. “There are so many things to love about living here! No matter how big Durbanville gets (and it is getting pretty big) it still has that small-town feeling. The car guard at Woolies knows me, the barista at the coffee shop knows how I like my coffee. It’s a great place to bring up children and we’re spoilt for choice in terms of schooling, with fantastic private schools and excellent government schools. We have all the shops we need, from the ‘ko-op’ selling farming supplies, to the trendy coffee shop and the secondhand clothing store that sells bargain designer dresses. The town is well maintained; the services are great. It really is a beautiful place to live.”
ABOUT TERTIA ALBERTYN: Tertia is a mother of three children – twins who were conceived on her ninth IVF treatment and a baby who was conceived naturally. When she is not busy being a mother, volunteering on the parent-teacher association, writing on her award-winning blog (tertia.org) or sipping on Chardonnay, she helps couples conceive through her egg donor and surrogacy programme, Nurture (nurture.co.za).

Following an array of awardwinning Sauvignon Blanc vintages, the new sparkling wine boasts a vibrant and unique floral design, inspired by sunny South African summer days. Flaunting a soft golden hue, the wine bursts with fresh tropical fruit flavours, emphasising the greener spectrum brought in by the Sauvignon Blanc grapes, with aromas of kiwi, fig and gooseberries on the nose. The sparkling wine is available at leading retailers nationwide, the Durbanville Hills cellar or via the online platform, vinoteque.co.za. Visit durbanvillehills.co.za for more information.

Estate agents need to remain vigilant about money laundering F
or an estate agent, showing potential clients a wellappointed property in a good neighbourhood could signal the start of an offer to purchase. However, it sometimes happens that something about the transaction “just does not feel right.
The property industry is a very important cog in our economy. But it has also been identified internationally as being vulnerable to money laundering and terror financing. Money laundering involves a person taking criminal proceeds, disguising and hiding the illegal source and then using the money while pretending that it was always legal and legitimate. Simply put, money laundering is the process of making dirty money look clean by laundering it through both financial and non-financial systems.
register with the FIC, report cash sales (transactions of R25,000 or more) and suspicious transactions to the FIC. These regulatory reports submitted to the FIC contain valuable information which can assist the FIC identify the proceeds of crime, combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism. The FIC uses the information in the reports to develop financial intelligence which is shared with competent authorities for their follow-up action and investigations. Estate agents can help fight against crime and contribute to a safer and more stable business environment. Do the right thing. Prevent your business from being abused by money launderers.
All over the world criminals use their proceeds to purchase, rent, develop and/or renovate properties. It is important that those involved in the property industry remain vigilant to signs of money laundering.
First, every estate agent must register with the FIC online, via its website. When the registration process is complete, you will be able to submit reports to the FIC. It is not an acceptable excuse to plead ignorance regarding your legal obligations in terms of the FIC Act.
South Africa clamps down on money laundering and the financing of terrorism through the Financial Intelligence Centre Act.
If you are an estate agent and you have not yet registered, then do so today on: goweb.fic.gov.za/goAMLWEb_PRD/ Home.
The FIC Act places obligations on estate agents which include them having to

Closing loopholes to make it tougher for money laundering criminals
M
oney laundering can be seen as a three-step process: placement, layering and integration. During placement, criminal proceeds are moved into the financial system via cash or electronic deposits into bank accounts, money orders or cheques. Other means used include personal gambling, the purchase of high-end goods like artwork, which can be resold for cash or via electronic fund transfer. Think of a hot potato – “hot funds – that needs to be put down so that you do not burn your hands (placement). The layering stage conceals the origin of the proceeds from the source through layers of financial transactions. By doing this criminals try to create as much distance between the proceeds

Ways criminals make their money
In the final stage of “integration apparent legitimacy to the illicit funds is supplied whereby the funds are re-entered into the economy. The money launderer will make the dirty money, that now has been integrated, look clean by using it for normal business or personal transactions like the purchasing of a luxury car or a house. The hot potato has now gone cold and has been turned into a potato salad.
STAGES OF MONEY LAUNDERING
of unlawful activities and themselves. The intention is to blur the money trail, making it difficult to trace the source of funds. Often this involves purchase of houses, luxury vehicles, shares, bonds and life insurance policies, and investment in legitimate businesses. Think of a hot potato being tossed from person to person.
Buy bonds, invest in legitimate businesses, invest in property
Criminals are free to buy more luxury items and deepen the spread of proceeds
The HOT potato (funds) is thrown from person to person (distancing yourself from it)
Criminals may look to grow proceeds seeking legitimate or illegal investment opportunities The HOT potato (funds) is now cooled (funds laundered) and criminals can enjoy their proceeds
IMPACT OF MONEY LAUNDERING The broad impact of money laundering is to weaken and deprive society, communities, industries, economies and ultimately the financial system of growth potential. It creates and reinforces the perception that there is opportunity for criminals to thrive, and that government institutions, law enforcement and regulatory environments have limited reach and effect.
