e’ve covered Hout Bay a few times in Neighbourhood, but our coverage has never been as poignant as it is this week. Affectionately known as the Republic of Hout Bay, the reason we’re so drawn to the area is not just for its picturesque setting, but also for its phenomenal community spirit. This sense of community has never been more evident than when raging fires left thousands homeless in Imizamo Yethu recently. It’s been amazing to see so many residents come together to donate food and goods, volunteer

to help with relief efforts and, in some cases, open their homes to those who have lost everything. This Tuesday as we observe Human Rights Day, I can’t think of a more fulfilling way to honour the day than by doing what we can to help those in need. To find out how you can do your bit, go to page 13 for a list of NGOs assisting with relief efforts.

While First Thursdays brings art and design lovers into the city centre, it’s the second Wednesday of each month that piques the attention of local wine lovers

De Waterkant Did you know? De Waterkant is one of the most sought-after addresses for young professionals, and it’s not just because of its great location; it’s also the cobbled streets and eclectic mix of Cape Dutch Georgian and Asian architecture that make it highly desirable.

ooking to discover the fruits of the Cape Winelands without tackling the freeways out to Stellenbosch, Franschhoek or the Breede River Valley? Look no further than Tuning the Vine, an innovative inner city wine route that brings the cellars to the CBD.

Since launching in October 2015, Tuning the Vine has become a staple on the city’s nightlife calendar, with winemakers and wine lovers spilling happily onto the streets on the second Wednesday of each month.

The concept is simple: “tuners” purchase a ticket (advance tickets are cheaper) online, and then swop the ticket on the night for a tasting glass, a map of participating venues, and a wristband that grants you free tastings

“The format is completely different giving producers the opportunity to showcase wines in a fun, informal, urban context,” says Shereen Amos, co-creator, Tuning the Vine. “Tuners are expanding their worlds, finding out about new producers, tasting new varietals and falling in love with fresh favourites as they move beyond the familiar wine experience.” Each month up to 40 producers showcase their wines, with winemakers often on hand to talk enthusiastic tasters through the winemaking process. It’s not only about wine, though; also look out for tastings of craft gin and cider at selected venues, such as the

charming Gin Bar on Wale Street. Tastings kick off at 5.30pm, and the last drinks are poured three hours later. However, most venues will remain open for dinner, serving wines from the participating wineries by the glass. And if you find a wine you can’t live without, the wineries

for that month are also loaded onto wine merchant cybercellar.com, allowing tuners to stock up on their favourite tipples after the fact.

After the sell-out success of the Cape Town routes, Tuning the Vine expands to Johannesburg in 2017, with an inner-city wine route taking over Fourth Avenue in Parkhurst on selected mid-week dates.

The micro exhibitions displayed on the front wall have already been incredibly successful. “We originally decided to focus on young emerging South African artists,” says co-owner Lisa CormackThomson, “assisting with framing to present their beautiful work the way it deserves.” Fine art graduates Danielle Jade Paul and Pamela Bentley have had two sell-out exhibitions, Amy Ayanda’s abstract mixed-media paintings sold well and gathered many commissions. “We’re evolving and have decided to also exhibit work by not-so-young South African artists and some internationals,” adds Lisa. The current show is by illustrator Caroline Tomlinson titled Lunar.

The 99 Loop gallery, on the corner of Church Street and the heart of the First Thursdays route, showcases a wide selection of emerging and established artists and recently added a restaurant to its offering. Solo’s peaceful courtyard and exposed brick interior are the perfect place to chill in between viewing the exhibitions in the various gallery spaces. With art on the cafe walls also for sale and a fresh, unpretentious menu from chef Chad Blows (formerly of The Marine in Hermanus and the Greenhouse under chef Peter Tempelhoff ) it’s an oasis of calm in the busy CBD. Open for breakfast and lunch (and, of course, dinner on First Thursdays) the eggs Benedict has already gained a loyal following. Light home-made gnocchi with mushrooms comes highly recommended as do the free-range rib-eye steaks, and chocolate pecan brownies and cookies to go with excellent coffee. At the moment, 99 Loop is exhibiting three solo shows by women artists: Clare Menck, Karen Cronje and Jeanne Hoffman.

Floating for fun

Take some time out and find new ways to relax at Life Day Spa Waterfront WORDS: LAUREN JOUBERT

T

here’s nothing a woman loves more than a day at the spa. So when I was invited to try a few treatments at the Life Day Spa at the V&A Waterfront, I jumped at the opportunity. As I entered the spa, I immediately felt relaxed and at ease. As you walk through the entrance, you’re surrounded by luxe beauty and skin products, making it hard not to spend all your savings at once.

The floatation pool

GROUND ART CAFFE

I found this treatment most intriguing – 30 minutes of complete relaxation, spent cut off from the world as you float in a pool. The chamber where the pool is located is illuminated by tiny lights and has ambient music. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the treatment as the floatation pool has been compared to the Dead Sea – because of the high salt content of the pool your body to floats effortlessly, your muscles relax and there is zero strain on your bones and joints. It’s said that 30 minutes in a floatation therapy pool is equal to four hours of deep sleep!

Rasul treatment

Life Day Spa has its own Turkish bath – a body cleansing ritual popular in the Middle East. The rasul chamber itself is a deluxe take on a traditional bath. The room is painted black, with mosaic seating and fibre optic “stars” ceiling lights. I was given two bowls: one with a body scrub and the other with a body mud mask. The idea is that the room steams up, you exfoliate your skin, and the ceiling showers a mist over you, allowing you to wash away the scrub. That’s when you apply the mud, sit down, relax and enjoy the ambiance of the music, the dark room and the steam.

Final thoughts

The floatation therapy was my favourite spa experience to date. The sensation of being weightless and floating in a pool in a dark room allowed me to fully relax and escape reality. Also, the rasul therapy made left my skin glowing for weeks afterwards! The Life Day Spa certainly opened my eyes to new experiences, and it won’t be long until I make another booking for myself.

P

andora is an international Danish jewellery manufacturer and retailer founded in 1982 as a family-run jewellery shop in Copenhagen. Claus Peter Jakobsen tells us how the brand charmed its way into South Africans' hearts.

Q: Why did you decide to bring the Danish brand to South Africa? A: Pandora started in May 2009 in South Africa. It was an easy decision as Pandora was one of the most powerful brands within the jewellery sector in the world. To say no to this fabulous brand was never an option. I am proud and amazed by the craftsmanship which goes into each product from Pandora. The product that is “simplest” to make goes through 16 different sets of hands before coming out as a finished product. Pandora is constantly striving to improve the footprint it leaves on this earth and has a very stringent corporate social responsibility policy, which is important to me. Q: Where in South Africa did Pandora first launch? A: For strategic reasons, we launched in Gauteng. But shortly after opening our doors, we were quickly overrun with requests from all over the country. Q: How has South Africa influenced the brand? A: South Africans have taken Pandora in with open arms, and most of our clients today use our beautiful charms to build their own memories. Our bracelets are like a photo album on your wrist, and with the introduction of the Big Five charm we’re offering something truly South African to the world as part of the global collection. Pandora is inspired by all aspects of a woman’s life as well as the elements of nature. In most cases, the real designer is each customer as they create and build their own stories and designs with the charms.

Q: Where are Pandora shops located? A: We are in most major malls in South Africa and neighbouring countries. We're also located in select Edgars Premium stores. Q: How does a store’s location influence your product offering? A: The beauty of South Africa is that all areas draw in a different market. We offer a carefully selected product range within each location to cater to what the relevant market needs. A Cape Town Pandora store may sell a different range from a Pandora store in Bloemfontein. Assessing the market’s local needs is a necessity for success. Q: Are Pandora shoppers online, or do they prefer a physical store? A: We have never closed a store down in SA, and we see continuous growth each year, but our online store is doing better and better, and continues to surprise us. I believe we need an online presence, but to experience the brand in all its glory, and allow our expertly trained staff to give you a Pandora experience in one of the concept stores, is the best way do it. Q: What advice or insight do you have for other business owners starting out? A: South Africa is a fantastic place to be. Stick to the plan and stay committed to the goals you have set yourselves and then success will be around the corner. Remember, though; South Africa doesn’t have the purchasing power of places like Europe or the US, so be realistic. Create a culture within your organisation where your team are part of the process in building a company that they are proud of.

EXPERIENCE IT YOURSELF: SUSTAINABILITY: Pandora Jewellery 011 706 2377 pandorashop.co.za

• Pandora is continually doing more to reduce its environmental impact and promote sustainable behaviours by championing conscious practices across all areas of production – from design, materials and supply chain to, most importantly, happy and healthy people. • Pandora believes in using ethically sourced materials, including environmentally friendly stones, and recycled gold and silver.

My business neighbourhood Louw Roets creates handcrafted furniture with a contemporary aesthetic from his workshop in Epping WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED

A

passion for traditional craftsmanship combined with his studies in industrial design has resulted in Louw Roets’s strong contemporary range of wood and steel furniture. He tells us about his manufacturing workshop and studio.

It’s affordable and large enough for me to take on bigger projects

Q: How did your business start? A: I came back from working in England in 2006 and wanted to purchase a bed. I could only find cheap pine beds of poor quality and a total disregard for good aesthetics. I bought wood, some cheap tools and built myself a massive queen-size bed in my bachelor apartment on Adderley. In the process I totally destroyed my landlord’s dining table which was my “workbench”. I started acquiring the necessary woodwork equipment over a period of eight to nine years while working in other businesses. The woodwork

business became something I did on the side. In 2012, I sold a piece of land that I’d bought when I was younger, to pay for my studies at Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT). During my third year as an industrial design student I officially started my own furniture design and manufacturing business. Q: Why did you choose Epping for your business? A: I can reach most of my suppliers within 10 minutes’ drive, and being very close to the N1, N2 and N7 makes delivering and receiving goods very efficient. Langa train station is two minutes’ walk away, so it’s easy for my workers to get here. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I frequently searched on Gumtree and OLX as well as contacting every possible real estate agent in the Cape Town area. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: It’s affordable and large enough for me to take on bigger projects while the two roller-shutter doors make loading easier for larger pieces. Because I do my own product photography, ambient light, the floor and wall construction were very important. Three-phase electricity with enough amperage also played a major role. There’s a small office where I can design, do admin and discuss projects with clients. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Mostly manufacturers: Felix’s mattresses, NC Glass and

Aluminium, Kaskazi Kayaks and Muller’s Autobody repair shop. Q: What are the rental prices like in this area? A: They vary from R35 to R55 per square metre excluding VAT depending on your needs and condition of the building. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: I receive about four to five clients per month at my premises, the others I meet at their premises or on site. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: I’m planning on doubling the size of my premises, employing more admin and skilled staff to manage the manufacturing side, and investing in new machinery to keep up with demand. This will allow me to tap into new markets and incorporate other design fields such as architecture into my business. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: My website has an online shop. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: The Hombre chair which comprises a sturdy steel frame, solid wooden legs, back rest and seat which can also be upholstered.

Indoor plants Select decorative indoor plants as you would any piece of furniture or art – with an eye for scale, colour, texture and more WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

IMAGE: ISTOCK

N

ot everybody has spacious, light-filled homes or interiors that can accommodate glorious walls of greenery, but there are so many alternatives which can enhance or breathe life into dead corners, plain walls or dreary areas. It’s often all that’s needed to transform a room. This isn’t a question of buying just any pot plant to fill a space, but rather about doing your homework in order to choose the right one, asking the experts about the light requirements of specific plants, and giving this inexpensive purchase as much thought as you would a more expensive painting or piece of furniture. Let your plants be living works of art. Whether you actually create an authentic work of art (and you certainly can), or handpick a container and plant something visually appropriate is entirely up to you, your taste and your space.

Put a large tree or heavy pot on a solid “tray” with castors. This makes it easier to move when you want to clean the floor beneath it or give it more light.

For example, a bare wall in the kitchen that gets a lot of sunlight is the perfect canvas for an artistic arrangement of plants. Think out of the box. A few rustic/whitewashed or even Perspex open boxes affixed to the wall can make great framed homes for plants. There’s no reason why you can’t fit wrought-iron pot plant holders to the wall, or little floating shelves. You can then include herbs in chalkboardcovered pots (with the herb’s name scrawled on them), glossy and brightly coloured pots with a range of cacti, or even interesting vintage tin cans with parsley. Mason jars look great too, and those could be hung on hooks. Plain or gilt frames around them can look quirky and cute.

Double The Comfort

When you look at pot plants – apart from their light or moisture requirements – look at their colours, leaf shape, whether they flower, and what size they will grow to. There are many shades of green, and even more under different light conditions. You can choose glossy or matt, textured or smooth plants depending on the mood you’re looking to create. If you want to soften a space, consider frilly and ethereal plants like certain ferns; to add a dramatic feel, think sculptural, clean and smooth lines; and if you’re looking for a plant with presence, consider an indoor tree. Always bear in mind a sense of scale. Just as you wouldn’t purchase a small chair for a vast, high-ceilinged room, you’ll want plants that match the size of your space. For a large space, you’ll want tall, willowy plants, perhaps with a statement pot in one of your principal or contrasting colours to match. Or simply use stone, concrete or high-gloss ceramic. Remember, plants don’t have to sit up straight in a container. You can choose to hang them from the ceiling or put them on a shelf and allow them to cascade down. Plants that spill out tend to add movement to a room. Plants not only add life to a static space, they can be functional, too. An openshelved room divider can be far less imposing if it contains greenery in great containers, or mixed with books and collectibles. Curate the space rather than fill it. Look for balance and shapes. Don’t automatically opt for the common indoor plants. Do your homework – it’s worth it.

Crystal Lagoons signs first A move towards project in South Africa mixed-use spaces

M

ultinational water innovation company Crystal Lagoons has partnered with Balwin Properties for the construction and operation of South Africa’s first Crystal Lagoon. The Blyde at Riverwalk Estate, in Pretoria East, Gauteng – a new R4,2bn residential development from Balwin Properties – will showcase Crystal Lagoons’s unique technology, which is patented in 190 countries and has brought a beach lifestyle to new locations, where swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and sailing can be enjoyed. The Crystal Lagoon

at The Blyde at Riverwalk Estate joins the ranks of over 600 Crystal Lagoons projects – in different stages of development and negotiation worldwide – in over 60 countries. Steve Brookes, CEO, Balwin Properties, says: “We foresee this as the first of at least six lagoons in South Africa combined with the Balwin brand. Balwin developments appeal to couples investing in their first home, retired people looking for safe lock-up-and-go apartments, young families and investors who are attracted by the return on investment that the developments offer.”

Strong income return potential fuels demand for Oceans Hotel Apartments in Umhlanga

T

hirty-two of the 38 one- and two-bedroom sectional title apartments and penthouses in the new Oceans Hotel Apartments above the five-star Radisson Blu Hotel in Umhlanga on the KwaZulu-Natal North Coast have already sold, says Carol Reynolds, area principal, Pam Golding Properties Durban Coastal. “This development is selling so well because of its prestige and prime

position, with award-winning architecture and a highly appealing mixed-use concept with designer retailers on tap, a medical centre and even a snow park right on the doorstep. And what really clinched the deal for investors are the excellent projected returns.” The completion date for Oceans Hotel Apartments is towards the end of 2018.

A

ccording to South African Property Owners Association’s (SAPOA) 2016 Q4 Office Vacancy Report, the office sector is still firmly entrenched in its recovery phase although this is becoming increasingly fragile as a result of the sector’s macro drivers. Sandton has lost a significant number of big office tenants over the last year and office rental vacancies have surged to 11,9%. Additionally, the number of new speculative developments in Sandton continues to increase sharply adding to the amount of unlet prime space. Commercial and industrial property consultancy, Jones Lang LaSalle South Africa (JLL), pins the current Sandton office supply to 1,5 million square metres. After the completion of all construction developments, JLL anticipates Sandton’s office supply to increase to

1,9 million square metres, which will be over the next three to four years. Hassan Shaikh, founder, Revolve: a specialist corporate and retail interior design strategy agency, says some vacancies are as a result of muted employment growth or the building’s aesthetics or its location and access, while others relate to cost, which is probably the most relevant. He predicts the rise in office space vacancies will not play out well for landlords. Shaikh says moving forward the smart money will go into repurposing or redeveloping redundant office parks or buildings in decentralised nodes. “We are sitting on a goldmine in Bryanston, for example. Access and security are good and there is a complementary mix of residential, retail and office development to support mixed-use developments.”

Until a few years ago, a basic lease agreement was the last word in the tenant-landlord relationship and common clauses included standard annual increases and a seven days’ notice with material breach to terminate, but this is no longer the case. The oncestraightforward contract has become more complex with a raft of legislative amendments to the Rental Housing, Consumer Protection and National Credit Acts. How to cancel your home loan

I

n certain cases, homeowners who have paid off their home loan may have the option to keep their bond account open, which will keep the loan facility available to them. Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO, RE/MAX of Southern Africa, says that a homeowner might want to keep the facility open to ensure that they have access to money when they may need it for household improvements or repairs. “The advantage of keeping the account open is that the homeowner will not need to register another bond over the property and incur more registration costs. All the homeowner will have to do is make a monthly payment that covers the administration of the account and the insurance policies. They will also be able to keep their homeowner’s insurance and life assurance policies,” says Goslett. He notes that if the homeowner decides that they would rather cancel the home loan account, there are a few procedures that they will need to follow, as it will not happen automatically. The homeowner will need to provide the bank with a written request asking for the home loan account to be cancelled. In the instance that the bond has been settled early, there might be a penalty or administration fee that will need to be paid by the homeowner to cancel the bond.

Hout Bay Cookbook author, Jane-Anne Hobbs, tells us about her neighbourhood WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK

ABOUT JANE-ANNE HOBBS: Social media guru, food writer and cookery consultant Jane-Anne Hobbs works for Liquorice, a leading Cape Town digital advertising agency, and in her spare time potters around the kitchen and garden. Her cookbook Scrumptious Food for Family and Friends was published by Random House Struik in 2012.

Hout Bay is less than 30 minutes’ drive from the centre of Cape Town, but you are whisked into a different world the moment you swoop home along the coast road or meander back into the valley via Constantia Nek JANE-ANNE HOBBS

Hout Bay’s school of choice

J

ane-Anne Hobbs creates tasty, family-friendly recipes that leap from the page of her book and blog, and she’s a social media guru working with well-known food brands. She tells us how Hout Bay has captured her heart. “I’ve always loved Hout Bay, and visited the valley often in the ’80s, when we lived in Cape Town’s City Bowl. When my family moved back to the Cape in 2009, after 17 long years in Jozi, it was the obvious place to put down new and eager roots. The advert we saw in a property supplement was disheartening, with blurry blackand-white pictures revealing nothing about the splendour of a secluded mountainside setting. My husband viewed the property and was instantly

smitten, so I was on the next plane. The minute I walked through the gate and saw the view and the deep, shady stoep, I knew I wanted to live in this house for the rest of our lives,” says Jane-Anne. “We live in a breathtaking cradle of blue-green mountains, minutes from the ocean, and there’s enough farmland to make me feel as if I’m truly living in the countryside. There are vineyards and fields, forests and waterfalls, rivers and ravines, and an abundance of fauna: horses, peacocks, guinea fowl, owls, nightjars, snakes, tortoises, toads, spectacularly weird insects and magnificent marine mammals including seals, dolphins and the occasional whale. One weekend every year we take a pilgrimage up the mountain to see exquisite red

disas blooming. There are rambles with the dogs on the mountain track above our house, long walks beachcombing, lazy sundowners on the stoep, and happy hours pottering around Hout Bay's excellent craft, charity and food markets. “I don't know why anyone wouldn’t want to live in beautiful Hout Bay. Sure, this is an area that has its share of challenges, including heartbreaking inequalities and multiple problematic social issues, but many organisations and goodhearted individuals are working hard in a spirit of genuine goodwill to support and unite the people of Hout Bay. And it's that cohesive, positive community ethos that makes Hout Bay the place for me.”

• Cheyne’s: for tapas-style Pacific Rim cuisine • Massimo’s: for authentic Italian chow and amazing wood-fired pizzas • Spiro’s: for gorgeous Greek food • Woodcutters Arms: for pub burgers and thick-cut chips • Mariner's Wharf: for fish and chips and a seaside vibe

THINGS TO DO: • Enjoy food stalls and live music at Bay Harbour Market. • Explore Hout Bay Lions Craft Market on Sundays on the Common. • Visit World of Birds with over 3,000 bird species and many other small animals. • Paint your own pottery at Clay Cafe. • Hike through the mountain trails.

Nurturing enquiring minds and happy hearts since 1901. A safe and happy school for girls and boys in the heart of Hout Bay. Western Cape Education Department curriculum from Grade 1 to 7. Dedicated and caring educators focused on developing well-balanced children. Fostering a culture of tolerance and a love of learning. Excellent sporting facilities and an extensive sports coaching programme.
