Showcasing proudly homegrown content, while incorporating the latest international trends, has become Decorex SA’s forte. Aside from the exceptional quality at every stand, you can also expect to see world-class appliance exhibitors proudly showcasing their latest ranges. Sian Cullingworth, portfolio director, Decorex SA, gives us some insight into this year’s exhibition. Q: Tell us more about this year’s theme. A: Our lives are constantly impacted by the fast-paced electronic world. This can negatively affect our senses if we don’t have a space that allows us to step back and have a moment of quiet introspection. We’re seeking refuge in silence, searching for a closeness with nature that, for many, is an elusive reality instead of something we immerse ourselves in daily. The 2017 theme, “Make your space your living dream”, leans towards this natural ethos within the home, creating a liveable haven that seeps calmness and inspires wholesome living.

A: There are some amazing new features that will be at the show which include “We are Cape Town”, the Designer Spotlight by Dylan Thomaz, Decorex SA Trend House, Painted Wolf Wine Bar, Noir Restaurant and Bar, Franke Kitchen Design Project, and 2017 Plascon Colour Forecast, to mention a few. unning from 10am to 6pm from R 27 to 30 April, R95 will get you an all access pass to the show at the CTICC. Expect to see the design and decor industry out in all its glory.

TWO QUESTIONS FOR CAPE TOWN’S CHOSEN DESIGNER DYLAN THOMAZ, FROM STUDIO DYLAN THOMAZ. Q: What is your go-to design item to make any room look good?

A: Either a great couch or art. Q: Which area of a house do you get most excited about decorating?

A: The living room is my favourite. I love layers and telling stories, and this is the best room to do that in.

Did you know? Table Mountain’s well-known flat top was formed around 300 million years ago. During an ice age the mountain was at sea level and massive ice sheets compressed and flattened the layers of sandstone, resulting in the table top we see today.

Paardeberg (Horse Mountain) is where the Battle of Paardeberg took place in February 1900. It was a major battle during the Second Anglo-Boer War. These days the Parrderberg is much more peaceful, and is home to many wine and olive farms. Scheckters Raw

Toby Scheckter’s vibey cafe in Sea Point’s Regent Road is all about making vegan food healthy, interesting and delicious. After building up an organic energy drink business in New York, he returned home to find a gap in the market. “There was nothing on offer here delivering a tasty and delicious vegan meal. Vegan seemed to mean carrots and boring,” says Toby. “I wanted something that left you satisfied on all fronts. You don’t have to be a vegan to enjoy a meal here.” The varied menu covers a world of flavours, from the pumpkin pie flapjacks to the poke bowl, the Thai red curry, the best vegan burger, wraps and salads, and divinely decadent raw desserts such as the Snickers Bar. But Scheckter’s Raw isn’t entirely a raw food restaurant. “We’ve redefined what raw means for us to signify honest, plant-based, nutrientdense food. Probably 60% of the menu is actually raw food – I believe some cooked food is good for health.”

The Hungry Herbivore

Popping into this chic, sparkly bar just off Bree Street, you’d be forgiven for not realising you’re in a vegan restaurant. Pizzas, waffles and a house burger speak of comfort food, but there are healthy clues in the vegan mozzarella, vanilla coconut ice cream, Sweet Potato Fries and the Oh Sweet Kim burger made from sweet potato, lentils and quinoa. Owners Amy and Brent started a stall at the V&A Waterfront Food Market, realising their dream of their own vegan cafe last year. “Our vision was to create food that tastes so great that meat-eaters also want to eat here, to show everyone how good vegan food can be, encouraging them to include more plant-based food in their diet. We called ourselves The Hungry Herbivore for a reason – we want you to come hungry and leave feeling satisfied.” Most of the menu is cooked, but there is a raw pizza option and the desserts are also raw and organic. There’s no chance of anyone going home hungry!

W

hile the Helderberg, Simonsberg and Paarl Mountain stand out from the landscape, grabbing your attention as you amble through the Winelands, the Paardeberg is easy to miss. But the mountain separating Paarl and the Swartland is home to some of the most exciting cellars in the Cape, both big-hitters crafting world-class releases and young estates with wellpriced wines for everyday drinking. Coming from Cape Town and the N1, a fine place to start is Perdeberg Winery. One of the larger producers in the area, the cellar has a few tricks up its sleeve in the form of the Vineyard Collection: a range of single-cultivar, single-vineyard wines crafted to show off specific terroirs. Look out for the Cinsault and Grenache Blanc in particular. Just up the road, Vondeling turns out an impressive selection of wines, with unbeatable eco-credentials to boot. From Rhône-style blends to bold Bordeaux showstoppers there’s plenty to discover here, but don’t miss the two flagships: the Vondeling Babiana and Vondeling Erica. Both are named for rare fynbos species found on the mountain slopes. Your next stop should be Doran Vineyards, which has found plenty

of fans with its summer-friendly Rosie D Rosé and good-value Chenin Blanc. But also stop in here for a taste of winemaker Martin Lamprecht’s Incipio, an unusual blend of Chenin Blanc and Shiraz. Chenin Blanc is, of course, the star of the Swartland, and in the northern Paardeberg you’ll find the Chenin superstars of AA Badenhorst (aabadenhorst.com), Eben Sadie (thesadiefamily.com) and David and Nadia (davidnadia.com). Tastings at these three producers are by appointment only, though. If you haven’t called ahead, stop in at Dragonridge, where winemaker Johan Simons keeps a close watch on his 16ha of “dryland” (unirrigated) organically grown bush vines. The Pinotage packs in plenty of the mocha notes often found in this corner of the Winelands, but it’s the Cygnus Chenin Blanc that is perhaps the standout. Hand-picked from vineyards between 25 and 90 years old, it’s a delicious expression of Swartland Chenin with a good balance of richness and acidity. Even though the herds of Cape Mountain Zebra that gave these hills their name may no longer roam free, there’s plenty of dazzle to be found in the wineries of the Paardeberg.

town, and to see it grow and progress makes me very excited. We were very happy to move to Roeland Street, as there's a lot going on in the east part of the city at the moment. I believe in an integrated city, allowing everyone the chance to have their space and their interests. This is exactly the case in Roeland Street, with all different types of people experiencing our city in the same area.

C

reating stylish feminine classics that stand the test of time is what Margot Molyneux’s eponymous fashion label is all about. She tells us more about the elegant store in Roeland Street. Q: How did your business start? A: I completed a diploma in fashion design at the Design Academy of Fashion in Woodstock. After my studies, I wasn’t sure what to do. Starting up a business had not always been my main ambition. However, I decided that if ever there would be a good time to give it a try, this would be it. I worked part time for two years before committing full time to the brand. In April, we celebrate our sixth birthday. Q: Why did you choose Roeland Street for your business? A: I love Cape Town, it’s my home

Q: How did you find your premises? A: We’re friends with Simon Deporres, the previous tenants. They kindly contacted us when they decided to move their business in another direction. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he size of the shop is perfect. It’s very difficult to find smaller retail spaces in the city. The building is also old and has a lot of charm, which we love. We plan on using this store to grow a community and lifestyle around our clothing brand. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Roeland Liquors – who are great friends to us – the wonderful Book Lounge, and J by Juanita. All of our neighbours are lovely and we were warmly welcomed by them, as well as the local residents, when we opened the store. Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: O ur rental is pretty affordable for us, which is what gave us the chance

to open our doors and attempt our first retail store. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: We have a surprising amount of visitors to the store daily. Some days are busier than others. However, we’re realising that many more people live in the area, and there are also quite a few tourists wandering around exploring. We’re also lucky enough to have loyal customers who come and visit us specifically. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: No expansion plans currently. We wanted to have a piece of Cape Town, a beautiful and reliable addition to our city, and we believe that’s what we’ve got. We’re more than happy with our space – it’s enough for us. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have an online store. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: T his changes seasonally. However, we sell a lot from our Basic Collection, pieces which people feel they need to complement the rest of their wardrobe.

Increase the value of your home by turning that little-used space into a simple, cosy family area WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

IMAGE: ISTOCK

N

ot everybody has the luxury of an expansive, exclusive patio, and even those who do are looking to make that little, often awkward and cluttered space look more attractive. It can work well when the weather makes the other side of the home uninhabitable, and can be made into a more relaxed, family space. It can be hard-wearing, quirky, covered or uncovered – whatever takes your fancy (and budget). It’s certainly a plus when the time comes to market your home. You can make the space look better with very little cash. Do it yourself if you have the time and the inclination, and if you enjoy an eclectic mix, get odd pieces of furniture from friends and relatives and give them a new lease of life. Always plan first. Look at the space, work out precisely what you need and, as with indoor decorating, measure the size of the furniture needed. If you’re starting from scratch, begin with the floor. Consider decking, large concrete pavers or a simple concrete slab. If it’s a small area, keep it clean with large monotone elements so the space appears bigger. Floating seating, like a suspended slatted bench, works well, as does a concrete bench. A low concrete table

and side server also work well – they’re waterproof, organic-looking, monotone and easy to clean. Make sure you have a covered space to store cushions. Look at the walls, creepers, murals, mirrors, lattice work, and, if you have enough sunlight, consider a herb wall. You could also put in succulents. A growing wall works wonderfully here, whether it’s the full monty, a panel, or shelves on which you position pot plants. Oversized planters also work well; position them well, choose maintenance-free plants with a graphic look and uplight them. Decorate as you would indoors, but be practical. Keep your framework simple – wood, concrete or metal – and, if you want to introduce botanicals or colour, do it in your cushions, throws or large pots. If your space is small, consider sticking to plain cushions such as bull denim slipcovers. A fixed or moveable fire pit or fireplace of some kind is a real conversation piece or meditative space just for you – something separate from your braai. Firelight is a wonderful moodsetter, but don’t neglect other types of lighting, such as solar fairy lights, tiny wall lights or large jar solar lights. If it’s doable, consider fitting an extendable awning.

atepayers associations are civic organisations addressing issues within their boundaries of representation for the residents of a particular area through one, unified voice. The role of the SFB (Sea Point, Fresnaye and Bantry Bay) Ratepayers Association is no different. Their Safety & Cleaning initiative serves to take care of the community, instilling a sense of pride backed by action. Now the SFB Ratepayers Association in partnership with corporate sponsors Pam Golding Properties and Dogon Group Properties, and support sponsors Century 21, Durr Estates, Jawitz, Knight Frank, RE/MAX Living, Seeff, Sotheby’s, Tyson Properties and REBOSA, are taking further steps to ensure that the areas are safer and cleaner for both residents and visitors alike.

Let’s make a change and keep our neighbourhood safe, secure and clean. Be an active part of preserving what you cherish most in your community. Be a part of the solution. Contribute today towards a safer, cleaner neighbourhood.

This is what the SFB Safety & Cleaning initiative take on in the Sea Point area:

These are the additional services they plan to add with your support:

• Tackle crime, litter and general lawlessness. • Have security officers patrolling Beach Road and the Promenade (Phase I) and some side roads (Phase II) 24/7 on four dedicated Segways. • Clean up the beachfront with the NPO Straatwerk seven days a week (Phase I), and three days a week (Phase II – the link roads connecting Beach and Main Roads). • Employ a fieldworker to engage with and assist the homeless. • Our Upliftment Programme has employed 55 homeless people since December • Supply dog poo bags in dispensers.

The estates below Zevenwacht Wine Estate Here’s what’s happening in property in the area WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: SUPPLIED & NATASHA LASSEN

T

he small cluster of residential estates established around the lower slopes of Zevenwacht Wine Estate, above Kuilsriver and with panoramic views extending all the way to Table Mountain and the Durbanville Hills, is perhaps one of Cape Town’s best kept secrets. Residents of the estates often refer to their area as Zevenwacht, but as that name is the trademark of the wine estate there isn’t an official name for the collective geographical area on the map. All five estates have "Zeven" in their names and some locals affectionately refer to them as "The Big Five", identifying more with the scenic hills of the Stellenbosch Winelands than the sprawling suburb of Kuilsriver that extends below them. Zevenwacht Village was the first to be established, originally conceived as a retirement village, but soon became open to everyone and is now a favourite for overseas investors who love its easy lock-up-and-go lifestyle. Zevendal was next to be developed in 1999, and more recently Zevenwacht Country Village. These three are all on land originally part of the Zevenwacht Wine Estate. Then there is Zevenzicht to one side, and Klein Zevenwacht on the other, developed from a neighbouring farm, where each house has its own plot of vines managed by the estate and receives a few cases of wine each year. A new retirement village, Zevenwacht Lifestyle Estate, is currently being developed by the wine estate. “What attracted us to the area

17 years ago was to be closer to Stellenbosch, as my son was then going to school at Paul Roos, so it was accessible,” says Sulet Bluhm, long-term resident and estate agent specialising in the area. “And being close to the airport was important to us as my husband was travelling internationally for work. Then we just loved the country atmosphere.”

luxury spa, plus wine tastings of the well-known wines, of course.

Considering that this is countryside bordering on the Stellenbosch Winelands, it's surprising how accessible and central the area is. The addition of the Zevenwacht Link Road connecting to the M12 means that you can be in Stellenbosch in 15 minutes or slip onto the R300 for an easy journey to the airport; Somerset West is 20 minutes away and in the other direction you can easily connect with Brackenfell, the N1, Bellville and Durbanville.

For everyday grocery shopping residents use Langverwacht Plein shopping centre on Langverwacht Road which has a Checkers, Woolworths Food and more. For more shopping outlets there’s Stellenbosch, Tyger Valley or Somerset Mall slightly further afield.

For a country area, schools are easy to reach. All Stellenbosch’s well-regarded schools are easily accessible, and a new Curro school in Brackenfell is another popular option. Mikro Primary is a top choice for the Afrikaans community and Klein Zevenwacht Estate hosts The Equestrian Academy of Cape Town, where students, in addition to the regular curriculum, can take equine studies up to matric and ride to their heart's content. Zevenwacht Wine Estate itself is hidden up a wooded valley. It's a perfect spot for picnics by the lake and has a kids’ playground. There’s also a restaurant in the old manor house, a hotel and a

With all the Stellenbosch Winelands as their playground, residents aren’t short of great restaurants to visit, markets to browse at the weekend, and outdoor activities, and the new Cattle Baron on the nearby Saxenburg Estate is a popular neighbourhood eatery.

ZEVENWACHT WINE ESTATE

However, it’s the rural atmosphere, the farmland behind and the gorgeous views that really are the reason to live in one of these comfortable country estates, which are close to the city but slightly apart from it.

When we moved here we loved the country atmosphere and tranquillity, the beautiful farm and the views. Much has changed, but we still have the same safe and tranquil ambience of a farm. We love going for walks on the farm trails into the hills. SULET BLUHM, RESIDENT

BEST IN FOOD: • Cattle Baron on Saxenburg Estate: for excellent steaks and views • Zevenwacht Country Restaurant: for great food in a scenic setting • Mulderbosch Vineyards: for woodfired pizzas • Hoghouse BBQ and Bakery at Spier: for slow-cooked meats • Jordan Restaurant: for fine dining

THINGS TO DO: ACCESS: • Walk and run the farm trails in the hills above the estates. • Taste wine and have a picnic at Zevenwacht Wine Estate. • Visit the Stellenbosch Slow Market at Oude Libertas. • Enjoy a round of golf at Kuilsriver Golf Club.
