o celebrate its 75th birthday last year, Boland Cellar launched its new Talent and Terroir varietals – Shiraz, Chenin Blanc and the Cinsaut Rosé. Having sampled the Rosé in the December holidays, it’s safe to say that I’m in love. It’s definitely the season of Rosé. The Talent and Terroir Cinsaut Rosé has the perfect balance of fruity flavours, with just a hint of white pepper, and a delightful clean finish. It’s my pick for summer sips.

Did you know? Zonnebloem was a farming area up until the early 1900s, after which, as the city grew, the area became the home of immigrants, freed slaves, merchants and labourers.

ven in the daytime when its pink neon sign isn’t really visible, The Raptor Room still jumps out. While it may be cosy in terms of its physical space, it more than makes up for this in its sweet, eccentric, yet laid-back personality. Located on Roeland Street, it adds to the growing popularity of the east side of the city. The Raptor Room is the brainchild of Amy Lilley; it has always been her dream to open her own place and serve her own dishes. She saved for about five years to make this dream a reality.
V&A Waterfront

The V&A Waterfront is situated on South Africa’s oldest working harbor. It’s one of Cape Town’s most popular tourist attractions, drawing around 23 million visitors a year. PUBLISHED BY TIMES MEDIA PROPERTY PUBLISHING Unit G04, Old Castle Brewery Bldg 6 Beach Road, Woodstock Cape Town, 087 828 0423
The Raptor Room is set up in the style of an American diner, making good use of the space available. The windows that look out onto Roeland Street stretch from floor to ceiling and all have bar-style seating. On a hot day the windows can be opened wide, allowing the light breeze and city sounds to drift in.

The decor is sweet and unusual. Each table has its own dinosaur-statue-cumpot plant, and cutlery and serviettes sit in a wide, paint-dipped glass jar. But the most striking look from the Raptor Room is an embroidered piece that hangs over the booth, complete with velociraptor heads and delicious monster leaves in embroidered florals and rich green fabrics. While the unique and cool style of The Raptor Room may be the first thing you notice, it’s the food that is the real winner. The menu initially appears small, but there is so much variety that it’s in no way restricting. My friend and I ordered the House Ice Tea. Both flavours were refreshing and, most interestingly, nostalgia-invoking. As someone who is almost always hungry, I ordered the baba ganoush, the popcorn chicken with garlic and herb salt, and the sweet potato fries
with aioli. The baba ganoush arrived first. It was served on a slim wooden board with baby carrots, sugar snap peas, mini mielies and home-made lavash (Middle Eastern flatbread). The dish was crisp and full of flavour. The popcorn chicken was crunchy yet tender, and the flavoured salt added something extra. The sweet potato fries were soft and crispy, and the aioli was deliciously garlicky. My friend ordered the F*ck Bread, mielie fritters with a rocket and heirloom tomato salad, smoked jalapeno butter and mint salsa. When I tried it I immediately got food envy. The Raptor Room is open from 11am (and has its own brunch menu) until late and has something for everyone. With its unique flair, fresh tasty food at reasonable prices and relaxed mood, The Raptor Room is definitely worth a visit.

A fresh new vibe at the historic Constantia Nek restaurant with Harbour House and La Parada WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK
T

he iconic buildings of the old Constantia Nek restaurant needed major TLC when the Harbour House Group took them over in 2015. A year later, they have been reinvented as two very different spaces, both retaining the elegant bones and features of the original heritage buildings. The Harbour House restaurant is serene, white and clean with big windows looking out over the Constantia Valley; La Parada is all wood, with thatched ceilings, exposed stone walls and old-world Spanish posters and a vibey atmosphere around the sheltered courtyard.
La Parada is the perfect place for Hout Bay and Constantia residents to meet halfway for casual lunches and impromptu sundowners, with live music and dancing on weekend nights. The signature tapas menu for both Bree Street and Constantia Nek has been recently updated by new chef Martin Senekel with generous plates full of Spanish-inspired flavours. The standout dish for us was the grilled calamari with warm cucumber and tomato salad, which was light and fresh. A satisfying pork belly and a creative seared tuna with olives, green beans, citrus and anchovy dressing completed our starters. Sitting out in the courtyard with palm trees swaying and refreshing cocktails in hand was postcard-picture summer living. Moving through to the adjoining Harbour House restaurant for the rest of our meal,
the calm ambience of high white ceilings and stunning views out over the Contantia Valley vineyards set the tone. The menu reflects the quality seafood theme of its sister restaurants in Kalk Bay and the V&A Waterfront, and the chalkboard specials had us deliberating between four signature linefish dishes, each one a classic in its own way. The angelfish with a creamy dill sauce was our winning combination: delicate juicy fish complemented by a subtle dill sauce and rosemary potato bake. The kingklip with orange beurre blanc wowed the eye with a plating worthy of an impressionist painter, and popping flavours of orange, sage and artichoke were an inventive and lively contrast to the fish. It was hard to justify dessert after all that, but the dark chocolate torte with salted caramel popcorn was irresistible, and the fresh fruit sorbets were beautifully light and refreshing. A perfect end to an indulgent summer lunch.
Fit for a king Belthazar has a stellar reputation for its great food and welcoming atmosphere WORDS: LAUREN JOUBERT

O
ut of the hundreds of restaurants at the V&A Waterfront, Belthazar has always stood out for me. The waiters in their dapper white suits and starched aprons, and the hostesses who welcome you to try some of the delicious beef you’ve heard so much about make it difficult to resist heading in and spoiling yourself. The time had finally come for me to savour the Belthazar experience. Upon arrival, I decided to enjoy the impressive covered outside area for my starters and a glass of wine. To begin the evening, I had the tangy, deep-fried Camembert lightly drizzled with a contrastingly sweet, cranberry sauce. I paired this with a glass of Belthazar house Sauvignon Blanc. Crispy, light and delectable, the first course was off to a fabulous start. Upon moving inside – where the cosy interior is decorated with stylish trims – I dived into the caprese salad. The bocconcini balls melted in my mouth, while the fresh tomato and rocket,
combined with zesty basil pesto, gave it that authentic caprese flavour. For the main meal, I decided to indulge in the best of both worlds with the house special: meat and seafood combo, recommended by my friendly and knowledgeable waiter. The Mozambican prawns and my standard cut of melt-in-your-mouth rump steak were a match made in heaven. I opted for a merlot house blend to go with my meal, and the onion blossom side was a spectacular sight. After all that, being the dessertfanatic I am, I couldn’t resist a taste of the chocolate brownie with a decadent whole-milk chocolate sauce and home-made ice cream. This scrumptious, classic dessert paired well with a classic port and ended off my evening with a bang. Belthazar is definitely one for the books. Whether you’re off to enjoy a night with friends, or a quiet one with family, there’s something for everyone at this prestigious Cape restaurant. I’ll be sure to book my spot again soon.

My business neighbourhood A historical building and holistic centre in Woodstock offers the ideal space for pure and natural O’live handmade soaps WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGE: SUPPLIED
A
husband and wife team making artisan soaps and bath products, with natural ingredients and essential oils from local growers, O’live handmade soaps, recently outgrew the family kitchen and moved into its own premises in Woodstock. Co-owner Zikhona Tefu tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: I needed a natural soap for my daughter who had eczema. I started making soap for my family, which was soon shared with friends, and an idea to sell the soap was born. The Cape Craft and Design Institute (CCDI) was very supportive with its workshops and market support. Q: Why did you choose Woodstock for your business? A: Apart from the fact that it is near
The Old Biscuit Mill, where we sell our products every Saturday, we chose it because of its creative and entrepreneurial vibe. We felt the area was well suited for our growth needs. It’s also central; most of our stockists can pop in to collect orders and get a sneak peek into our production process. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We were invited to participate in a market on the open day of 196 Victoria building and we fell in love with the place. We were happy when we were invited to apply for space here. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he holistic and natural approach of the whole centre is ideal for our business. The centre has a workshop space which we plan to use to host soap-making workshops in the future. It’s on the main road, so it’s easily accessible. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: T he building has a range of holistic therapists, an art gallery, a yoga studio, a retail shop, and Gather, which serves raw, organic wholefoods. It’s an inspiring group of likeminded individuals, who believe in natural nourishment of both skin and body.
Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: O ur unit is mainly for production, but there is a shop in the front of the building which also sells our products. The shop sees a steady number of people, including those coming to see practitioners in the building or coming to grab lunch at the salad bar. Our customers love to pop in every now and then, choosing their products and watching the production process. Q: D o you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, we plan to offer a wider range of products, and to continue to grow our business beyond the Woodstock and Cape Town area. We would also like to formally start offering workshops. Q: D o you operate online as well? A: Not yet. We are busy setting up our online store. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: O ur soaps are by far the most popular items, especially the fynbos-inspired ones, like the Wild Honeybush and Rose Geranium soap, scented with rose geranium, which, most people don’t know, is indigenous to South Africa. The Cape Buchu and Lemongrass soap, scented with buchu essential oil is a firm favourite.
SEE FOR YOURSELF: Q: What are the rental/sales prices like in this area? A: We are not sure about the prices, but they attract young, progressive people.

Kitchen renovation Any estate agent will tell you that the most worthwhile place to renovate in a house is the kitchen WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK
M
oney that you spend on a kitchen will always provide a return on investment when you sell, and increase saleability, but you have to renovate cleverly. You may love your pizza oven, chequered splash back, or massive glass chandelier, but they’re unlikely to be selling points. Have them, but know they’re not going to achieve much when you sell. A quote which tickled one kitchen designer was: “Anything with personality is a potential waste of money.”
It’s the central meeting spot, and often the entertainer’s hub. So if you can open it up or even create the illusion of space by adding a window or some additional light with a skylight, do so. Before you charge ahead, pace out your kitchen. Top chefs say the most important consideration when laying out the kitchen is the the ability to move easily between key areas while interacting with guests.
Kitchen designers have a list of key elements which make the bulk of prospective homeowners fall in love instantly. The aim is a contemporary look, even classic, but never trendy. Ideally, you want to create a timeless kitchen, one on which a new owner can put their stamp – even if it is that glam chandelier or shocking pink walls. You need to provide the perfect palette which stands alone stylishly.
Go for a neutral colour for major surfaces like countertops and floors. Neutral doesn’t mean boring, just something which won’t date. If you have existing cupboards and a small budget, consider spraying them a neutral colour like a chalky white or pale grey, or fitting more contemporary doors, new handles or handleless doors. There are companies which specialise in this, and it’s worth every cent. The transformation is astonishing.
While everybody’s downscaling and urbanisation is on the up, that doesn’t mean they want a small, dated kitchen. A spacious, welcoming kitchen is on everybody’s wish list.
Rid your kitchen of clutter and create hidden storage compartments for things you don’t need or which are unattractive. Make sure your plugs/adapters/light switches aren’t ugly and bulky.
Home is where the heart is. Find yours now. Search 1000’s of fresh properties everyday.
A home for everyone www.privateproperty.co.za
Install high-end appliances, ideally replacing them all at once in the same finish (like stainless steel) to provide visual cohesion and make the space look less cluttered. If it’s an option, consider an eye-level oven and putting lesser-used appliances and accessories below waist level. If you have the space, add a freestanding or built-in kitchen island as a workable surface space. It can really alter the room’s traffic pattern for the better. As much as yours won’t, or shouldn’t, look like a MasterChef kitchen, those who enjoy cooking love having a clean, uncluttered surface on which to work and plate food.
BRIGHT SPARK Lighting is critical. If your kitchen is used as the central eating/meeting place, you will need a combination of functionality and mood. So make sure your lights are on a dimmer switch.

Granger Bay Racing driver David Perel tells us about his neighbourhood WORDS: KIT HEATHCOCK IMAGES: NATASHA LASSEN & SUPPLIED
BEST IN FOOD:
Granger Bay is beautiful, right on the ocean. It’s mostly very quiet in summer and central to everything I need when I’m in Cape Town.
• Newport Deli: for breakfast • Sotano: for lunch and sundowners • The Butcher Shop and Grill: for steaks • Grand Africa Cafe and Beach: for seafood and sundowners • Tobago’s at Radisson Blu: for stunning location right on the water
DAVID PEREL
THINGS TO DO:
It’s an apartment that faces the ocean and it’s magic.”
• Kayak in the bay. • Visit Oranjezicht City Farm Market on Saturdays. • Play golf at the Metropolitan Golf Club. • Picnics in Green Point Urban Park • Walk, run and cycle on the promenade to Sea Point.
The ocean is what makes Granger Bay feel like home for David.
“I
lived in Sea Point for three years before moving to Granger Bay, but I’ve run to Granger Bay along the promenade from Sea Point all my life,” says David Perel. Running is how he relaxes, and with the whole length of the promenade extending from Sea Point around Mouille Point, Granger Bay is perfectly located. “I have a running route and I don’t change it. It’s super central. My office (I have a business here) is literally 2km away and I run there. I don’t own a car in South Africa so I either run or catch a taxi,” says David. “I live with one of my oldest friends. He found the place and I joined him a year into him living there.
“I’ve been to places like Lugano in Switzerland and it’s phenomenal there, but you come home to Granger Bay and it looks just like it. We’re super lucky here with the ocean literally not even 100m away. It really is such a beautiful place and, another plus for a car lover, a lot of wealthy people live in the area, so I get to look at a lot of cool cars. On a Sunday, plenty of Ferraris drive past.” Granger Bay is also convenient for the airport. “I travel somewhere every three weeks: Barcelona, Abu Dhabi, Italy. I stay in Cape Town because I love it so much. It would be much more convenient for me to live in Europe, but every time I come home it feels like I’m on holiday.”
ABOUT DAVID PEREL His big break came with the offer to drive the 2015 season with Lamborghini Bonaldi Motorsport in the Italian GT Championship. Signed with Kessel Ferrari in 2016, he represented the team in the Blancpain GT Endurance Series in only his second year of GT (Gran Turismo) racing.

What are some of your favourite things about the Granger Bay area?
What do you love about the area?
How would you spend a free day in the area?
I love what the Granger Bay and Mouille Point areas offer in terms of lifestyle with direct access to the world-class park, golf course, promenade and unbelievable views of the ocean. Granger Bay includes the Radisson Blu hotel, Hotel School and the exclusive Waterclub residential and commercial office precinct, a yacht marina, a boat club and the well-known Grand Beach. In my opinion, this area is the city’s still-to-be-discovered gem!
Granger Bay is a precious and irreplaceable natural treasure – a protected marine reserve bounded by the Atlantic, and frequently graced by passing pods of playful whales. The area is also of historic importance, being home to Fort Wynyard, established when diplomatic relations with Great Britain and the US became strained in 1862. For me, Granger Bay’s allure lies in its tranquillity, and the scents of the pine trees and ocean.
I’d start the day with a magnificent buffet breakfast on the terrace at the Radisson Blu hotel, enjoying the dolphins play. After this, I’d take a kayak for a paddle through the bay, admiring the beauty of the mountain towering above the city and enjoying the birds, dolphins and seals. After a sunset cruise around the bay, I’d enjoy a cocktail and some superyummy food at the Grand Africa Cafe and Beach restaurant.
