It is nice and quiet with nature at your doorstep. The highlight of my home is the view. My favourite thing to do is to go to church on Sunday with the family and have a big Sunday lunch. TENDAI “BEAST” MTAWARIRA
S
heffield Beach is one of KwaZulu-Natal’s gems. When it comes to coastal living, you simply can’t get any better. Tendai Mtawarira, otherwise known as “The Beast” on the rugby field, is one of the many residents who appreciate the beauty of this small town. Sheffield Beach is situated in a convenient area close to the main highways, such as the M4 and N2, Tiffany’s mall, King Shaka International Airport, the busy town of Umhlanga and many other fun attractions. “Some of the ideal spots to enjoy nature and the outdoors are the Flag Animal Farm and Salt Rock Beach. There are many more spots I still have to explore,” says Tendai. “For the best chow ever, I go to Ray’s Kitchen.”
Boasting incredible sea views, you will find the most treasured beaches in this area, namely Sheffield Beach and Christmas Bay Beach. Known for the surf, fishing, snorkelling and more, these exclusive beaches are immaculate, quiet and beautiful.
RAY’S KITCHEN
Sheffield Beach has grand coastal homes, humble apartments and is mostly recognised for its A-list estates. With the exceptional uptake of the recently launched Zululami Luxury Coastal Estate, where 590 stands were sold in five weeks, investors and families see the benefit of living in secure estates and fall in love with the lifestyle offering.
BEST IN FOOD: • Ray’s Kitchen: for delicious homecooked meals • Delish Sisters: for upmarket cafe fare • Jack Salmon at Tiffany’s mall: for the best seafood • Siggi’s German Restaurant: for tasty pub grub • Sage restaurant: for family dining

My business neighbourhood B
Babette Noble, a former engineer, tells us about her new business, Noble Handcraft, in Durban North WORDS: MEGAN DEANE IMAGES: SUPPLIED
abette Noble, owner of Noble Handcraft, conceptualises, designs and creates handmade ceramic art treasures. Q: How did your business start? A: W hen I was on maternity leave, I started ceramics classes. Moving from being an engineer in the mining industry, to working with a creative medium made my heart explode. This is how my journey started. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: My husband and I bought a beautiful artsy house in Durban North, with a lot of extra space, so I set up my studio and teaching space at home. Our house has become a gallery displaying my products, and also where I draw inspiration. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I must have looked at 50 properties, but eventually found this space. The garden was a mess and the house was very outdated, but after a lot of TLC this space has come to life.
are based in Umhlanga and the North Coast. I am also able to be at home when my family needs me. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: I am based in a residential area and have the most amazing neighbours. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: I would love to own a shop and studio space. I think Durban is ready for a space to have both a retail shop at the front and a studio space at the back. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: I have an online shop and most of my products can be viewed on my Facebook or Instagram accounts. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: I did a commission at Victoria Tongaat Mediclinic, which has seen a few spin-offs in homes across Cape Town. My urchin-inspired planters, and detailed botanical and oceanic plates are also very popular.
SEE FOR YOURSELF: Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T his area is centrally located, making it easy to get to my suppliers. A lot of my customers

A unique investment opportunity Oceans Umhlanga offers a home-away-from-home experience with the conveniences of a hotel stay WORDS: CANDICE BOTHA
This approach gives investors the best of both worlds: a private apartment with the option to be fully serviced and the freedom to control their own holiday rentals thereby reducing fees and commissions to managing agents and maximising their returns

T
he award-winning Oceans Umhlanga development continues to impress with the recent release of a new series of residential apartments for sale. “The space was originally earmarked for offices, but having investigated the holiday rental market in the area, we realised that we could offer buyers a unique product which will offer excellent returns,” says, Pregan Naicker, CEO, Edison Property Group. The apartments, which range from one-bedroom to spacious two-bedroom units, have several distinct advantages in addition to their prime location and spectacular views. Residents will have use of the five-star Radisson Blu hotel’s outstanding facilities, including a luxurious spa, conference and business centres, a swimming pool, fully equipped gym, fine dining restaurants, state-of-the-art security and proximity to a world-class mall without actually being part of the hotel. This will allow owners to rent out their properties privately with a letting agent, or online through sites like Airbnb. “This approach gives investors the best of both worlds: a private apartment with the option to be fully serviced
and the freedom to control their own holiday rentals thereby reducing fees and commissions to managing agents and maximising their returns,” says Naicker. “Our research shows that apartments in Umhlanga see an average occupancy rate upwards of 60%. Working on a conservative estimate of 40% occupancy, it suggests that owners can expect a return of around 7% to 8%, which is in addition to the capital growth these apartments are sure to see,” he says.
PREGAN NAICKER, CEO, EDISON PROPERTY GROUP
Advanced technology will enable owners to manage the logistics of their rental via an app that generates a key code valid for a limited period as well as controlling all the electronic devices. The apartments are an attractive prospect for potential tenants, too. “We believe the concept appeals to the global trend for choosing privately owned accommodation for longer stays and family holidays. By staying in an apartment at Oceans Umhlanga, visitors will have a personal, homeaway-from-home experience with all the conveniences of a hotel stay at the Radisson Blu,” says Naicker. Priced from R2,8m, great interest is anticipated for the units available.
