uccessfully twirling a noodle or two around a chopstick is still a skill that evades me, but it’s totally okay to ask for a fork if you need one at this short selection of noodle spots in Durban – they are used to the request. Here are my top three places to go when you’re in a noodle mood.

The problem with Mooki Noodle Bar is that the meals are so consistently good, you end up making excuses not to cook just so you can pop in and pick up a takeaway. Okay, that’s not a real problem – it’s a pleasure. Booking your table for a sit-down meal is essential as this Glenwood spot is almost always busy, especially over weekends. If lounging around in your pyjamas sounds more like your ideal Friday night, you can pick up your meals as a takeaway too. The Asian-inspired menu branches out beyond noodles. Try the beef yakitori, dim sum or haloumi fingers out on your plate.

Spice things up Tuck into Durban’s curry feast at Jeera Restaurant at Suncoast Towers WORDS: SUZY BELL

I

’ve finally found a sublime crab curry that tastes like no other. Executive chef Sandren Govender is an artist in the kitchen. We first dropped by for his glam high tea where he deconstructs traditional Indian sweetmeats and gives them an English design twist. They’re dinky-sized cakelets, so you can easily wolf down a dozen if you desire, and served with exotic teas like Orange Cactus Fig and Nepal Masala. But this time we were after the curries. Their tandoori chicken starter with curried prawns and traditional samoosas melted in the mouth. We marvelled over the incredible creative selection of preserves – each was an individual delight for the taste buds which complemented the food perfectly. The fish curry was excellent – fresh dorado filleted and braised in a light curry sauce with home-made chutney. The Millionaires curry is very Gatsby, but as in Fitzgerald, not the sandwich. It’s a fine feast of crayfish, prawns, scallops, crab, mussels, and line fish simmered with delicate spices and finished with a classic fish velouté. The heavenly handmade naan bread baked in a charcoal tandoor oven, is delicious and extra soft. And Sandren’s crab curry is transcendental. I will definitely go back for more.

utland Festival, a newly minted music festival, has arrived with a diverse line-up offering party people a great weekend away, celebrating good times and great tunes.

Outland Festival 2016 takes place from 24 to 27 March and offers a refreshing take on music festivals. Chatting to one of the organising minds behind the festival, Bob Perfect of Durban Is Yours, it’s almost startling how much thought and care has gone into creating a viable and entertaining setup for festival-goers. The idea behind the festival began with Mr White Pro and if you’ve ever partied in Durban, you’ve been to one of its events. As Bob tells us, “The idea was to have a fresh music festival not too far outside of the city, but far enough away that you’ve escaped reality for the weekend. As for the music, we’re trying to provide something that nobody else can or will provide. There are the recognisable big-name headliners who everyone knows, the next wave who are looking to take their place, and upand-comers you might not have heard of yet, but who are making a name for themselves on the underground scene.”

M

ass personalisation is a big trend across the board at the moment. Designers are looking at many ways of providing the items that people want, but giving them just enough of a personal touch to make them unique. This approach fills the gap between mass-production and bespoke craft, and appeals to the desire for individuality that people are increasingly showing. When it comes to homeware, this approach to production can be even more compelling for people, because it allows for individual style and functional benefits. The kit-of-parts approach to products gives people the ability to fit a product to their space requirements, usually taking the form of modular items that can be configured however the user wants.

This approach is being seen in international design and in offerings from local companies. The Grid sofa by French brand Pool, for example, is made up of separate pieces, allowing the owner to create a look unique to them. Locally we’re seeing the same thinking in items such as the Honeycomb shelf by Leg Studios. This system of geometric shelves and clips lets people build a storage system in any shape and size, making it appropriate for any number of spaces and uses. As technology allows for more nuanced production methods, we’ll see this kind of personalised approach become increasingly common in the future. There is a constant tension in people’s lives between being an individual and being part of a community (having the same stuff as everyone else), and this approach to design helps people to navigate it.

Good transport links bolster property values

P

roperties near good transport links have shown stronger growth than those that aren’t, according to Laurie Wener, managing director, Pam Golding Properties Western Cape. Over the last six years the City of Cape Town has invested significantly in public transport, a big bolster to the city’s real estate market. By September last year, the MyCiTi bus

service had 31 routes covering about 1,27 million km each month. There were 36 stations, more than 500 bus stops and more than 215 buses in the peak-hour periods, transporting 47,909 passengers each weekday. “Given the increasing numbers of vehicles on the road, rising fuel prices and people’s expectations of convenience, the more varied transport options you have, the more capital gain you can expect,” says Wener.

he Trickett family have long been associated with style – every which way – and green. Sara Trickett is now curating these glorious live wares at Saint Verde Botanicals at 15 Station Road.

Q: How did your business start? A: Our family have been plant-obsessed for decades. Sharon, my mother, has been collecting rare and unusual succulents for over 30 years. She has been propagating and growing them in several greenhouses on her farm in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, which is a little out of the way for most. We needed an accessible shop where people could view a curated selection of plants. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: My husband has had a studio in the Station Drive Precinct for about 18 months. Over that time we’ve seen how the neighbourhood has developed into an amazing confluence of people, shops, restaurants, markets and offices. It really is the most exciting neighbourhood in Durban. Q: How did you find your premises? A: A chance encounter with Charles Kerr from Con Amore started the discussion, and after seeing the

space with its awesome natural light and the potential of it, we jumped at the opportunity.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The draw of the neighbourhood is really broad and strong, which results in excellent foot traffic. The mix of businesses around us also brings in customers who appreciate the plants we sell. We aren’t your typical nursery. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Con Amore is our big neighbour, but within the immediate surrounds there is also Mo Noodles express and Fortunes. Recently my dear friends in the fashion industry, Terrance Bray and John Bleach, opened a retail and workshop space right next door. Just up the road is The Plant, home of the Morning Trade Market. S43 and Distillery 031, Jane Sews and Saviour Brands are here too. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Pretty good, for the time being. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: The precinct hums with activity – 100 to 200 people per week in our shop. A large number of those

A: Probably not with the plants – living organisms are tricky like that. Perhaps some of our other nonliving items will find their way onto the internet, but for now we are enjoying the interaction of people and their appreciation of our space. W

hen you look at the development which has taken place on the Mount Edgecombe estate, it’s difficult to believe that what was once a lowly golf course, built for those who didn’t want to have to travel into Durban on sand roads for a round of golf, has been transformed into a virtual paradise. Named after the seventh Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, Edward Piers Edgcumbe, work on the original nine-hole golf course began in 1925 and the course was later extended to 18 holes in 1935. Built exclusively for locals, the club expanded rapidly when “town members” were allowed to join 22 years later and it quickly went on to be regarded as one of the best courses in KwaZulu-Natal. The original clubhouse burnt down in 1988 and the existing clubhouse was then built. The country club now features two championship courses, each with its own clubhouse and, in addition to a good round of golf, the venue provides world-class conference rooms, restaurants, expert golf tuition, practice facilities, and

offers tennis, squash and bowls. The residential sector of the estate comprises 299 hectares, which are split into two residential estates, each with its own golf course. There are more than 1,000 stands on the estate, most of which are freehold property. Some, however, have been turned into sectional-title developments. Lightstone statistics reveal that the average price paid for a freehold home last year was just over R5m. A sectional-title unit averaged around R2,1m. A total of 85 freehold homes and 156 sectional-title units were sold last year. Twelve of the freestanding properties and 53 of the sectional-title units sold between March 2015 and February 2016 were priced between R1,5m and R3m. It’s not surprising that the estate remains a popular choice. It’s located 20 minutes away from King Shaka International Airport and is close to La Lucia Ridge and the vast array of business parks in the area.

Q: Who is buying property in Mount Edgecombe and what types of properties are available? A: The type of clients buying in Mount Edgecombe Golf Estate are typically young families who are security-conscious and looking for a lifestyle estate to raise their families. The majority are local families from Durban or from Durban North areas. We do still get the odd foreigner, and a few families who have relocated from Joburg. The types of properties range from apartments to townhouses and simplexes, and grand, freestanding homes.

Q: What do you love most about Mount Edgecombe? A: What I love most about the estates is that they each boast championship golf courses and beautiful upmarket homes. You can also reconnect with nature while embracing a lifestyle in harmony with a peaceful, picturesque environment. The pristine condition and the peace of mind the families have, knowing that they are safe due to the excellent security the estates offer, is something you cannot put a value on. The main clubhouse on Estate 1 offers so many sporting options for the sport enthusiasts as well as a place to meet family and friends, complete with a restaurant, bars, conference facilities and function rooms.
