alt, situated off 16th Avenue in The Village, Hazelwood, offers a welcoming atmosphere where you can enjoy informal fine dining. Choose to sit under the umbrellas outside or in the large double-volume, semi-industrial-style section inside this restaurant.
For starters try the chalkboard selection with Chourizo, Crudo San Danielle (air-dried, 18-month matured ham), Saucisson (air-dried pork sausage seasoned with garlic and thyme), beef
biltong and gorgonzola. Accompany this with condiments of black olives, sun-dried tomatoes and pickled onion, as well as breads such as pain de paysan (rustic baguette), rye, sourdough, fougasse and brioche. For mains, try a meal from the plates menu that includes slow-roasted beef rib, sticky watermelon glaze, and smoked bone marrow fritter with parsnip purée. Or try the two steamed Chinese buns with slow-roasted pork belly, pickled cucumber and Vietnamese-style glaze. Round off your meal with the raspberry Eton mess, or the black Sesame-infused creme brulee with white chocolate biscotti. The ingredients of the meals served at Salt complement each other well and will leave you delightfully satisfied. The restaurant provides a good selection of wines to compliment the dishes, and while there is not much choice when it comes to wine by the glass, there is an excellent range of craft beers.

In the midst of a mass-produced tea market, it aims to give avid tea drinkers only the best full-leaf tea available. With a tea empire built from scratch, Toni Glass, businesswoman and founder of The Toni Glass Collection, has been an inspiration for aspiring small-business owners. Q: What sparked your love for tea? A: It all began quite simply with my mom and a great cup of tea. I was raised in a South African household with a great pot of tea on the go all day long. My mom drank quality tea with good friends. Two things always stood out for me: the true love of tea they all seemed to share, and their connectivity while they consumed this beverage. Q: Tell us a bit about your journey with The Toni Glass Collection up to now. A: I started by reading everything and anything I could get my hands
on in tea and then decided to actually study tea abroad. I needed to learn from the best in the world in order to bring back the knowledge of the tea leaf and share it with those back home. South Africans deserved better in this department. Coffee, cheese and wine have all had a revamp, but tea was just good-old tea and rooibos. Q: What are your favourites from your products? A: My favourite is rather hard to say as it changes all the time and definitely with the seasons. I absolutely love a quality black tea and at the moment I am enjoying a classic winter warmer, Masala chai, full of the spice of life. Kiwi Cucumber and Mint has to be my favourite ice tea at the moment.

Khanya Mzongwana, or Yulu Ishii, as most know her, is originally from Port Elizabeth and has been involved in the food industry since the age of 16. Yulu credits 3 Fat Fish in Jeffreys Bay as a major game-changer in her career in terms of creativity. Sakhile Ndlazi (the prolific DJ Bubbles) is her partner in life and business, plus the mastermind behind the atmosphere at each pop-up. DJ Bubbles creates
transfixing vinyl sets from his extensive collection for each pop-up event. They decided to join forces and let the food and music live outside the confines of their own four walls.
Off The Wall events
Since its inception, Off The Wall has hosted a variety of events around Gauteng of which the collaboration with Grounded at Echo remains a firm favourite. Currently the pop-ups are inspired by various countries and their culinary offerings. This exploration has been an extension of Yulu’s own research into various countries’ cooking and she aims not only to treat guests, but also to educate them in various cooking styles and flavours. Previous pop-ups have included a taste of Japan involving street food-inspired dishes. The latest event included a look into modern Egyptian cuisine with family-style dining. Think slow-cooked goat moussaka, fresh tomatoes, figs, honey, almonds and roses, spicy koftas, flatbreads and delicious home-made dips.
An Italian feast
The next Off The Wall pop-up explores Italian food in all its splendour. Expect a new take on this all-time favourite. This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy Yulu’s take on Italian in five courses and pop in to find out more about her take on the complexity of Italian cooking. You can experience Off The Wall on 28 May at +27 Cafe in Hatfield. Keep an eye out for more events that might be popping up all over the country.

esearch has shown that humans have a tendency to recognise animal and human forms in all kinds of places. Called pareidolia by scientists, it’s the reason we spot everything from the Virgin Mary in burnt toast, and a rabbit in the moon, to facial expressions in cars. In design, however, actively appealing to this instinct is often seen as the worst kind of kitsch. Objects are supposed to be as neutral as possible and people are supposed to be the ones with personalities. But some designers disagree.

Jaime Hayon is one of these designers. From his monkey side table for BD Barcelona Design to his menagerie of crystal vessels for Baccarat, he believes that there’s nothing wrong with having a bit of fun with interiors. At the recent Design Indaba conference, he explained how he wanted to create
This trend comes and goes as people either try to create more serious or light-hearted interiors. While it’s sometimes obvious and sometimes more subconsciously appealing, it’s easy to see the joy people get out of objects that look at least a little bit friendly in a sometimes stressful world.
Locally, we’re seeing this trend show up in all kinds of pieces. The LittleMan Lamp series from David Krynauw, for example, appears to be sitting back and resting tired legs. The Goggo Bench by Frank Bohm, on the other hand, is designed so that, according to the designer, its “scale and irregular legs mimic the goggo’s swift motion”.

obo Zulu is the owner of Zulu Girl Beauty Spa. The spa is located inside the small Litchi Dekor en Geegoed in Groenkloof and offers massages, manicures, pedicures, facials and cellulite treatments. Q: How did your business start? A: I have been working for different salons for the past nine years. While I was doing this, it didn’t feel like I was reaching my personal goals. When my previous boss decided to close her business, I decided to rather start my own salon instead of looking for another job. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Litchi Dekor en Geegoed in Groenkloof is not far from where I used to work. I didn’t want to go far away from my previous clients, as I have built relationships with them. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I approached the owner of Litchi Dekor en Geegoed, Corne Bellingan, who was, and still is, my client. I went to her shop to ask if she had an extra room available where I would be able to start my own business. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The business is located in a main street (Florence Ribeiro). This and the fact that there’s also Litchi’s gift shop, Gill’s Coffee Shop, Lynné de Jager handbag and accessories collection, and Edugrafix Albums (selling school albums) on the premises, ensures a lot of feet.
Q: Who are your neighbours? A: The shop is located in a residential area. Our neighbours are general residents. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: I suppose it is quite high in this area, but luckily I don’t have to pay rent, as I assist in the owner’s shop on a Wednesday. So it’s a win-win situation, as my clients will often walk through her shop as well. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: I see seven clients on a busy day and about four clients on a not so busy day. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, I would like to expand my business by giving massages in corporate environments. These people work on computers and they sit all day long. Their poor posture makes them even more tired and stressed. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, I recently created a website, but most of my clients came with me from my previous work. Word of mouth is my best advertisement at the moment. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: My most popular service is most certainly my massages. My clients often tell me that I have a good touch or even a truly healing touch. Pedicures are also a big seller, everyone loves my pedicure sequence and painting.

The incredible story of Curro S
ince listing on the JSE in July 2011 Curro has been one of the most talked about shares in the country. The company, which runs affordable private schools across South Africa, has grown its share price by more than 700% over this time. It has been a remarkable growth story, not only because of how incredibly lucrative it has been for investors, but because of what the company does. Schooling hardly seems like a sexy business, but led by a passionate CEO, Chris van der Merwe, Curro has proved to be the right idea at the right time. Providing affordable, high-quality education is without doubt South Africa’s biggest challenge, and Curro has shown that it’s not simply a problem that should be left up to the state to solve. There are real opportunities for the private sector to become involved, not simply out of charity, but because it makes good business sense. Curro’s story, however, began long before it became a listed company. Van der Merwe started Curro as a school of 28 learners in the hall of the NG Kerk Bergsig in Durbanville. The experiment nearly didn’t survive because he failed to meet his targets for growing learner numbers and he was paying teachers out of his bond. But he had a vision and he refused to be told that it wouldn’t work. He later built the first Curro school himself with 10 bricklayers and 30 labourers, and that began the journey which led his company to now own 115 schools across South Africa at which it educates around 42,000 children. It is a remarkable example of how a business can be enormously profitable and serve society at the same time. Consider that around 30,000 of Curro’s 42,000 learners come from previously disadvantaged communities. Across all its schools, it maintains a matric pass rate of over 99%.
The first trade in Curro shares in 2011 was at R5,50 per share. They now change hands at around R40 per share
Curro employs 5,000 staff members, of which 2,700 are educators, and 38% of those are black. It also assists the state in the professional development of teachers. Those are what Van der Merwe calls the untold stories – the meaningful way in which the company is contributing to the future of this country. The telling thing is that these cannot be separated from the success of Curro as a business. It is such a great company precisely because of what it does. And that is a great lesson to all entrepreneurs.

Increase in residential building activity driven by apartments and townhouses
Y
ear-on-year growth in the volume of building activity in the planning phase of the South African market for new housing, remained in the low single digits in the first two months of 2016, according to Absa’s latest Residential Building Statistics report. The volume of activity in the construction phase of new housing showed relatively strong growth compared with a year ago, which was the result of a sharp improvement in one segment of the market on a
year-on-year basis since the start of the year. These trends are based on data published by Statistics South Africa in respect of building activity related to private sector-financed housing. From January to February this year the number of new housing units for which building plans were approved increased by 3,2% year on year (y/y), or 271 units, to 8,806 units over this two-month period. The construction phase saw the number of new housing units built increasing by 28,1% y/y, or 1,443 units, to 6,575 units
in the first two months of the year. This growth, however, was the result of strong growth in the segment for apartments and townhouses. The number of apartments and townhouses reported as being built increased by around 122% y/y, or 1,507 units, to a cumulative 2,739 units in January and February. The sharp increase in housing units built in this segment of the market compared with a year ago, may be attributed to reporting trends.
