hether you rent or own your home, making it pretty and comfy is certainly something that many of us aspire to. It’s important as it’s the place we spend most of our time. I was inspired to hear more about what this year’s trend forecasters are saying. Decor-wise the global trend has been summed up as The Considered Home. But what does this actually mean? Well, according to Sian Gutstadt, portfolio director, Decorex SA, it is a combination of decorating genres and is the design embodiment of the phrase “global village”. Sian says, “The essence of the considered home is a welledited space that is layered, but not cluttered, with a mix of quality high-end and store-bought pieces.” What a great vision. I love that everything doesn’t have to match and that timeless can live alongside new. It’s also more about quality rather than quantity. Now that will work for me.

In cities all around the world, rivers run bright green, pub crawls leave many a man bruised, and cheerful parades are the order of the day. If you’re celebrating at home with friends, treat them with some Irish-inspired drinks. You’ll have happy guests in no time.
Smooth Guinness punch (serves two)
Don’t feel like facing the masses this St Patrick’s Day? This is the perfect creamy dessert punch for an intimate evening for two. Ingredients: • 440ml Guinness draught • 220ml condensed milk • 5ml vanilla essence • 15ml nutmeg Pour the Guinness into a large jug while slanting the jug. Add the condensed milk, the vanilla essence and the nutmeg. Mix together and serve chilled.
Irish pool punch
This is a light summer-inspired punch – the perfect braai company for celebrating St Patrick’s Day at the pool with friends. Ingredients: • 750ml Jameson Irish whiskey • 250ml orange juice • 250ml pomegranate juice • 100ml lemon juice • 700ml ginger beer • fresh berries and fruit slices Combine all the ingredients into a punch bowl or a large jug (2,5L), stir and fill with ice. Garnish with slices of orange, fresh raspberries and blueberries.

While it might sound fun to have the whole family crammed into a small cottage for a sleepover, odds are you’re going to appreciate having a bedroom to yourself. howcasing items in your home may seem to some to be irredeemably old-fashioned. As a style of decor it seems too close to having a dowdy cabinet full of Royal Doulton china or a printer’s tray full of tiny tchotchkes on your wall. After all, in the 2000s, we were all encouraged to be minimalists, and leave the collectables to the blue-rinse brigade. With social media, however, we’ve all become curators again. In creating online personae for ourselves, showing that you have exceptional taste is the order of the day. Plus, with the evergrowing prevalence of second-hand and craft markets, it’s become cool again to collect things and display them to show off your taste. To create, as it were, a physical Pinterest in your home. This trend has meant that there is a renewed interest in ways of showing off your collections. Chen Karlsson’s Favourite Things lamp, for example, has space to hold treasured objects so that they can take pride of place

There’s no doubt that the pendulum will eventually swing the other way and collections will again be relegated to the garage, but for now, displaying curated items is a key challenge in decor. ivestock Wealth sells cows online as an alternative method of investment for people who find the stock market complicated. The returns are linked to the beef price instead of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange profits.
Q: How did your business start? A: The business started out when I was once again frustrated with trying to time an entry into the stock market. I was trying to find a way I could save and make my money grow in a way that wouldn’t be affected by factors that I can’t control or change. Owning a farm as an individual proved expensive, but cheaper if there are many of us farming the same thing on the same farm. That is how I came up with the crowd-farming idea. We now farm livestock on behalf of investors and they earn income from the annual sale of their cows’ offspring. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We are based at The Innovation Hub in Pretoria (Lynnwood Manor), but our farming operations are in Vryheid in KwaZulu-Natal. The Innovation Hub is a melting pot of young people with big
ideas under one roof, bringing their businesses to life.
Q: How did you find your premises? A: I introduced myself to McLean Sibanda, the CEO of The Innovation Hub, at a function in 2013 and told him my idea about wanting to create an alternative investment platform that uses cows as a base asset class, instead of shares and bonds. He loved it and suggested I meet him the following week. The rest, as they say, is history. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The rent is subsidised and the Wi-Fi is free. One also gets exposure to various entrepreneurship forums and expert advice. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: My neighbour is Tour 2.0, a dynamic team that is revolutionising township tourism. We always compare notes at the coffee station and learn a great deal from each other. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: We pay R750 a month for an office that can comfortably accommodate

hether or not you felt that Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan delivered a successful budget last month, you should be glad of one thing – according to the latest Open Budget Index, South Africa’s budget is the third most transparent in the world. This is an incredible statistic. South Africa ranks behind only New Zealand and Sweden in terms of the information that the government provides to the public about its finances. That places it ahead of the likes of the US, Germany and the UK. four staff members in a secure, aesthetic environment.
A country’s standing in the index is significant because it shows how transparent a government is about revenue collection and spending.

The more disclosure there is, the more the media, economists, academics and civil society are able to scrutinise what the government does with public money and hold officials accountable for where it goes.
Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We are opening an office in Sandton this month. This will bring us closer to our customers in the Joburg area. Our main expansion is the farmland we are acquiring for livestock. We aim to own farms across South Africa and the continent.
It’s really quite simple. The more the public knows, the more it can engage with trying to improve things. When access to information is restricted, everyone outside of the government is effectively disempowered.
Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, and people without internet can SMS “Cow” and their name to 31022 and we’ll call them back.
In South Africa, the presentation of the budget is a big occasion, and this year it was particularly so. For days leading up to it and for days afterwards, the discussion around the issue was robust. That shows that this is a process that South Africans feel they are involved in.
Q: What’s your most popular item/service? A: The Bonsmara cow.
We could all have our opinions about what was included or excluded, we could praise or lament the introduction of a sugar tax, and we could immediately calculate how much income tax we could expect to pay in the coming year. All of this was possible because the information was available for us to analyse and debate.

They certainly don’t produce transparent budgets. It is very encouraging that in South Africa we don’t have this problem. Despite the many pressures on it, the Treasury still acts in a way that includes the public in what it does. That must be celebrated, just as much as it must be protected.

Africa Rising to roll out Where South Africans Go passports R1,6bn in developments invest

frica Rising, a Durbanbased independent property development company, purchased properties worth R300m from Tongaat Hulett Developments during 2015. It plans to roll out over R1,6bn worth of developments in the Umhlanga Ridge area. Africa Rising has purchased 12 pieces of land from Tongaat Hulett Developments. The properties, recently added to the company’s portfolio, include The Madison, The Marina, Park Avenue, Aria and Jefferson in the Umhlanga Town Centre, and a commercial property at Sibaya.
Four of these are currently under development. The Madison is a mixeduse development that will cater to the medical sector benefitting from its strategic location opposite the Gateway Private Hospital. It comprises 97 apartments and 27 medical suites and is expected to be completed by August this year. It is already 90% sold. Construction has started on Park Avenue, a joint venture which comprises upmarket apartments which are 85% sold. Aria, providing retirement apartments, and Jefferson, providing student accommodation of 300 and 240 units respectively, will launch this year.

Expropriation Bill gets passed
W
ith all eyes on the budget during the last week of February, the government hurried through the Expropriation Bill. On 23 February, Parliament passed the Expropriation Bill that will allow the state to pay for land at a value determined by a government adjudicator and then expropriate it. This effectively scraps the “willing buyer, willing seller” approach to land reform. Despite the proposed intention of the bill to redress racial disparities in land ownership, there are a number of problematic clauses that make it possible for land to be expropriated unfairly.
Dr Anthea Jeffery, head: policy research, the Institute of Race Relations, says the bill leaves property owners open to massive losses should the government decide to expropriate their homes, land or other property. Now that the bill has been passed by Parliament, it still has to be passed by the National Council of Provinces, after which it will be sent to President Jacob Zuma to be signed into law. “None of these concerns were addressed, and I doubt that the National Council of Provinces will not pass it, so it will be up to the president to make a decision, and given the current focus on land reform in SA, I am fairly certain he will sign,” says Jeffery.
W
ith a growing number of countries vying to attract international property investors, the time is right to do some passport shopping. But, warns James Bowling, CEO and founder, Monarch & Co International, maintaining an investment in a foreign country isn’t the only requirement for residency or citizenship. “Investors can lose their residence or citizenship status if they don’t meet other requirements, such as a minimum stay,” says Bowling. For example, the UK requires investors to make the country their primary residence by spending at least 50% of their time there, while Malta residence holders can’t spend more than 183 days a year in another jurisdiction. When it comes to the perks such as free education and health care, the rules are different for citizens and residents. Residency holders are entitled to receive free state education only in the country of residency, and should always be covered by comprehensive international health insurance. In Portugal, however, you need to be a citizen contributing to social security as a taxpayer living and working in Portugal to qualify for free health care and education, according to Chris Immelman, MD, Pam Golding Properties International and Projects Division. He says residency doesn’t provide holders with free health care or education, though they have access to it. China doesn’t acknowledge dual citizenship, so investors would have to sacrifice their current one. “SA recognises dual citizenship, so our investors don’t have to worry,” says Bowling.

he picturesque village of Irene with an abundance of greenery provides countrystyle living close to the city between the R21 and N1 highways in Centurion. There are many cultural and historical buildings creating the rich heritage of Irene including the Old Post Office, Train Station and Smuts House Museum. Irene also has its own town hall, the Irene Village Hall, given to the community by the Van der Byl family in the 1920s. It is home to the Irene Country Club, one of the oldest golf courses in the country conceived by Johannes van der Byl in 1911. This scenic suburb is a peaceful retreat to escape the hustle and bustle of city life. Concerts, exhibitions, high teas and flower shows are often held by community members at this hall.
