very once in a while it’s good to indulge in the mystery that is the spy world. Since the 1960s, Ian Fleming’s James Bond series has had a major impact on popular culture. The famous quote, “Shaken, not stirred”, has conjured up many an argument between cocktail connoisseurs. Some believe that shaking a Martini results in a bubbly and bitter drink. Bond enjoys a variety of drinks in the books and the films, champagne being a firm favourite. Two forgotten drinks seem to be the Americano and the Scotch and Soda.

Practical but also philosophical. Even the smallest event has some sort of risk attached to it. Crowdfunding also goes further than just the money. It also creates a sense of community and gives the fans, who have always been seen as consumers, more ownership of the project.

The Vesper Martini In the first James Bond book, Casino Royale, Bond describes exactly how he would like his Martini prepared. The Vesper Martini is named after the first Bond girl, Vesper Lynd, and made with Kina Lillet. Unfortunately Kina Lillet does not exist anymore; however, Lillet Blanc or Martini vermouth are adequate substitutes. Ingredients: 90ml Gordon’s Dry Gin 30ml vodka 15ml Lillet Blanc/ Martini & Rossi Extra Dry vermouth Add all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake the mixture well until it is ice-cold. Pour into a Martini glass and add a large piece of lemon peel.
Ingredients: • 30ml Campari • 30ml Cinzano Rosso vermouth • Club soda Pour the Campari and vermouth in a glass of your choice filled with ice. Fill up the glass with club soda and garnish with an orange slice.
Scotch and Soda
This drink reigns in the book series, but never gets its deserved limelight in the films. A simple drink Bond most often enjoyed with Scotch. Every now and again he substitutes the Scotch with bourbon or whiskey. Ingredients: • 60ml Scotch whisky • Club soda Add the Scotch to a highball glass filled with ice or whiskey rocks. Top up with club soda and stir briefly.
How do artists profit from these events?
I
n 2010 Gerhard Maree organised monthly get-togethers with friends – events accompanied by great food and music they fondly called soirées. Very quickly word began to spread and more artists joined in the events. The idea to make a public event was sparked and Gerhard decided to curate and organise more events. With two main components, Secret Soirée events being specifically for music, and Drawingrooms for artists, City Soirée has Pretoria on its toes, providing locals with a variety of interesting events.
What was the inspiration behind City Soirée?
I think it has always been about connecting people. It started with music mainly because I come from that world and simply understood it better. We felt that events could be done a bit better. Not so much in the curating or execution field, but more to

We’re setting up a few Secret Soirées with American blues legend Doc MacLean towards the end of the year. We’re looking at Pretoria, Jozi, PE and Cape Town for these, so definitely something to keep an eye out for.

A: The choice was largely an emotional one. I really liked the area and felt that I could make a difference in The Reeds where there are many families with young children. When my friend introduced me to the school, I already knew that the area was very convenient for access onto the N1 south or north depending on where the parents work. Q: How did you find your premises? A: The school was for sale and was shown to me by a friend.

oerie Land is a registered independent school with the best interest of the child at heart. Its curriculum is based on the Caps system, but also includes subjects such as music, dance and art. Parents who work long hours will benefit from knowing that their children are cared for and educated, and that homework is completed. Q: How did your business start? A: The school was built and started as a creche. I bought it because of the need in the area for trustworthy
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: It is very convenient for the parents who live in The Reeds since they can drop-off-and-go on a circular driveway. I have been fortunate to be able to buy the adjoining buildings to enlarge the school as more children needed us. The main building was designed specifically for children and the purpose of a school. The building is designed in the form of a bird with the wings containing the classes and the body the office and reception areas. The playgrounds are large which is wonderful in a suburban setting.

The farm is situated on the R511 and is close enough to The Reeds to be easily accessible, but far enough to feel as if one were out in farm land. This is a very exciting project and the children are looking forward to the hands-on, independent approach that we will follow. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have a Facebook page. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Our extended hours are very popular. Our extensive remedial and aftercare programme and the fact that we do homework with the children under supervision, are very important.

No place for business as usual B
y the end of this year, it is likely that Standard & Poor’s would have downgraded South Africa’s sovereign debt to below investment grade status. Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan and his team are doing as much as they can to try to prevent this from happening, but it is unlikely that they will succeed. This is not only because their interventions are probably too late, but because they cannot do everything that needs to be done on their own. For South Africa to avoid junk status, what we need more than anything is faster economic growth, and that requires clearer leadership and policy direction from more than just the National Treasury. The simple truth is that South Africa’s economy is meandering because there is no real direction from our leaders. There is a reluctance to make any difficult decisions about how we move the economy along. We cannot simply carry on as usual and hope that things will somehow sort themselves out. Things have to change, otherwise we will continue to underperform. The chief economist at Investment Solutions, Lesiba Mothata, believes that one of those hard decisions is that raising taxes isn’t going to help. Other countries that have been in similar situations to the one South Africa is in now have had no success by increasing the tax burden on individuals and businesses. This is because higher taxes don’t stimulate an economy. If anything, they do the opposite. Instead, Mothata believes we have to think of innovative ways of increasing our growth, and primarily that means focusing on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). These have to be the key to South Africa’s prosperity, and unfortunately we are neglecting them. This country has developed in such a way that large businesses control most of the economy. They also have the most influence with the government. The result is that SMEs are at a heavy disadvantage and they aren’t receiving the kind of support that would really drive their growth.

Rosebank’s Keyes Avenue transforming into pedestrian-friendly arts precinct

hase one of a project to convert Rosebank’s Keyes Avenue area into a dedicated art precinct has begun. This upgrade in the heart of Rosebank aims to attract visitors and tourists to a more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly space. The area is already home to the Everard Read Gallery, the Circa Gallery and the Goodman Gallery. The project’s objective is to create attractive streets so people will be encouraged to walk or cycle through the area.
StudioMAS Architects and Urban Designers created the development plan for the area upgrade. It addresses the state of disrepair of streets, its many blank and windowless walls, and parking garages that face the road. These create an unpleasant, even unsafe, environment for pedestrians. “The current condition of Keyes Avenue appears to be a haphazard overlap of cars, scholars, church congregants, gallery visitors and daily commuters,” states the plan.
Its architects highlight a street in disrepair, dominated by vehicle movements to the detriment of pedestrians. They note that despite the “degradations and state of the streets, pavement and buildings” the area is an emerging precinct with “great development potential”. Phase one of the Keyes Avenue art precinct, involving the upgrade of the pavements, is currently under way. The second phase is imminent.
