anie Erasmus holds the Miss Deaf South Africa 2016 title and is the reigning Miss Deaf World crowned in Prague in the Czech Republic in July 2016. She's lived Centurion area for 24 years and currently lives in her own townhouse in one of the many security estates in Rooihuiskraal. “I love staying in Rooihuiskraal. It's a very diverse and vibrant neighbourhood catering for all levels of income,” says Janie. “Most of the houses and shops are new and there's a lot of entertainment available.” Rooihuiskraal’s location between Pretoria and Johannesburg, close to Midrand, suits Janie’s lifestyle. “It’s central to all the major access routes and has all the amenities I need like churches, shops, doctors, chemists and definitely great places to eat.” This qualified beautician works in Midstream for The Erasmus Group where she's involved in financial

administration tasks. Janie also has a full schedule of motivational talks and upliftment projects. “When I'm not attending to commitments, I enjoy beautifying my home and making it a place where I can let my hair down, spend time with my two four-legged children and just be Janie.

“I have wonderful neighbours who are always willing to lend a helping hand. The homeowners' association implemented a system whereby I can provide gate access codes to my visitors because I am unable to hear when the guards phone from the gate.”

Janie says she feels a sense of belonging in Rooihuiskraal. “My suburb has a mixture of younger and older people. We have learned to respect each other and leverage each other’s strengths. It's a very safe and caring community.” Janie is especially grateful to the people of Centurion who have been supportive throughout her competitions. “They have also been supporting my many fund-raising events in aid of deaf children who need cochlear implants and supporting many people in need,” she says.

Q: How did your business start? A: Capital Co-workers was born out of a need to work in a space where you are surrounded with like-minded individuals; a space where you can focus on building your business but also be part of a community. We weren’t happy with what was available at the time, and working at coffee shops wasn't always the most productive. We therefore decided to take this opportunity and create Capital Co-workers. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Pretoria East didn’t have any co-working spaces at the time and no creative/non-corporatestyle office solutions that suited the environment we believe is needed for an entrepreneur to build his/her business.

Q: How did you find your premises? A: Through a family connection, we were afforded the opportunity to utilise a portion of the Karoo Square and build the Capital Co-workers office space. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Pretoria East is very well suited for a creative co-working office space, as there aren’t any other office space solutions catering for this market.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: The Karoo Square tenants. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Between R80 and R100 per square metre. The Capital Co-workers rental model is a serviced offices solution, where you pay per desk space. The rental is R2,000 per month for a minimum of three months at a time. The home office

Working from home saves you money, lowers your carbon footprint and improves your family life WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

T

he look of a home office is strongly dictated by the actual space available. Factors such as whether you’ll have clients visiting your office and the nature of your business will also dictate certain fittings. If you have a choice, opt for an office that is outside the main house. Even if it’s just across the courtyard, it physically and mentally separates work from play, and creates an invisible line for family to understand the difference, too. It also makes it easier to lock the office door on Friday and not return until Monday morning. One of the joys of working from home is the flexibility. Nobody can see you in your pyjamas at 5am finishing that tax return or writing an article. You also have a better work-life balance, it’s easier to juggle children’s commitments, your commute is limited to crossing the courtyard and your office can be pretty much as you dream it. Creating a smart workspace is important. Don’t recreate that dingy cubicle you left behind at your old

office; create a space you really like. A small room in white, with a concrete floor, even concrete shelving, blinds, a trestle table, a chair or two, large industrial-type light fittings and a white filing cabinet looks good and exudes calm for most businesses. If need be, buy second-hand items and spray paint or reupholster them. Invest in quality technology like reliable electrics, air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, computers and lighting. Although a good home office needs to be functional first and beautiful second, it’s possible to have the best of both worlds. Lighting is so important. Capitalise on natural light, but don’t neglect targeted lighting for grim days or late nights. Move your desk close to the windows and run it parallel to the panes. A garden can be soothing to look at while you work. Storage is essential and often difficult to make attractive. Depending on your needs (and whether you’re a naturally tidy, organised person or not) consider restoring a lovely old wardrobe, so that everything can be hidden away.

Consider creating a little “me corner”, which can also double as a clientmeeting zone. There’s something liberating about being able to leave your desk and move over to your chill corner. It could have a comfy chair, a little coffee table/ottoman and a great reading lamp. Whether you’re the catnapping type or disciplined enough to take 45 minutes for a lunch break, it’s important to take a breather in the day. Finally, look at the flow of your office. Make sure you don’t have to go around furniture to reach the printer. Streamline the space for your needs. A giant white board or pinboard means you can update your life easily.

HOT TIPS: • Add greenery. Plants make people happier and they can survive a few of days without water, so you won’t need to visit the office over the weekend. • Consider getting a small fridge or coffee machine.
