ass personalisation is a big trend across the board at the moment. Designers are looking at many ways of providing the items that people want, but giving them just enough of a personal touch to make them unique. This approach fills the gap between mass-production and bespoke craft, and appeals to the desire for individuality that people are increasingly showing. When it comes to homeware, this approach to production can be even more compelling for people, because it allows for individual style and functional benefits. The kit-of-parts approach to products gives people the ability to fit a product to their space requirements, usually taking the form of modular items that can be configured however the user wants.
This approach is being seen in international design and in offerings from local companies. The Grid sofa by French brand Pool, for example, is made up of separate pieces, allowing the owner to create a look unique to them. Locally we’re seeing the same thinking in items such as the Honeycomb shelf by Leg Studios. This system of geometric shelves and clips lets people build a storage system in any shape and size, making it appropriate for any number of spaces and uses. As technology allows for more nuanced production methods, we’ll see this kind of personalised approach become increasingly common in the future. There is a constant tension in people’s lives between being an individual and being part of a community (having the same stuff as everyone else), and this approach to design helps people to navigate it.

Q: How did your business start? A: I started my business after realising that safety compliances were mostly done on paper only and didn’t affect business growth. Businesses spend a lot of money in order to get safety compliances, but they still have incidents and accidents that once again cost them money. They also spend money training their employees on safety but the employees still do things that cost them their lives and result in great losses for the business. Most of all, I recognised that businesses did not have accurate ways of calculating their actual costs of safety-related issues and identifying the root issues, and were just fixing what was wrong. I started my business helping businesses identify root causes of non-compliance – how much it cost them, and how to

he big debate taking place in Europe at the moment is whether or not the UK is going to remain a part of the European Union (EU). The possibility of a so-called Brexit will be a major political question until Britain goes to the polls on 23 June. Those who want the UK to stay argue that an exit would lead to job losses, hinder trade, push up inflation, and weaken economic stability. Those in favour of leaving say it will allow the UK to control its own destiny, open the possibility of new trade agreements, and save money. At the moment, it’s not clear who is winning this argument. Polls suggest that those who want to remain in the EU have only a slim lead.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We are situated in La Montagne in Pretoria East. We were lucky, because at our residential complex, there was a room available outside. We turned this room into an office.
The capitalist system on which the Western world has thrived over the last few centuries has been based on a few important premises. One of those is that the more open an economy, the better. A critical part of this is the ability to trade widely, with minimal barriers to the movement of goods, services, capital and labour. Put simply, the more people you can trade with and the more cheaply you can do it, the bigger the economic benefit.
Q: How did you find your premises? A: We live in the area. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: It’s a quiet area surrounded by nature. We even have our meetings in a lapa – according to me, this is perfect. We really enjoy working here.
This is also one of the essential principles on which the EU is founded. Its policies are expressly designed to create an open economy.
Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: The area is quite pricey, but we were lucky to get a really good deal.
Why then would anyone want to leave? The problem is that openness in an economy also makes it more exposed to shocks. If it’s easy for people to invest and bring money in, it must be equally easy for them to take money out.
Q: What is your shop footprint? A: We mostly go to clients’ sites, as this is more convenient for them. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, in three months’ time we will be moving to new offices in Hatfield. I believe that in the next nine months we will double in size. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Not at this stage, but once we have expanded, we will also start operating online as well. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: First-aid training, firefighting training, health and safety rep training, and safety files.

In the recent past some of the shocks to the global economy have been severe and have spread quickly. And this has caused people to question whether they shouldn’t protect themselves.

When viewed objectively, however, this is only putting short-term comfort ahead of long-term gain. There will always be episodes of pain in open economies, but they are also able to recover more quickly and more effectively. The trouble is that people have become very short term in their thinking, and this is the real challenge the world faces. A Brexit would be nothing but a victory for shorttermism – more evidence that we have become willing to compromise the things that sustain us for some sense of immediate gratification.

A: Looking at the beautiful Lynnwood area that I have lived in for more than 25 years and worked in as a property consultant for the past 13 years, I can only say, “Wow!” Not only has the area grown magnificently with stunning developments like Lynnwood Bridge, but we have also modernised our area with roads and roundabouts to improve the traffic flow. The reason why this area is so popular is because it is the feeding area of a number of quality Afrikaans and English schools (nursery, primary and secondary) and a bonus is the University of Pretoria, which is close by. Anybody who decides to buy in this area, will never have to move to be nearer to any educational institution again.

Shopping centres should adjust their hours to shoppers’ needs
S
uccessful retail centres should stay open later in order to boost retail sales because modern South African lifestyles have changed. Marius Muller, CEO of shopping centre investor Pareto, believes the opening hours of many malls still lag behind the needs of the consumers who support them. “It is important for malls and retailers to see the big picture when it comes to being open for shoppers,” says Muller. He points out that many regional shopping centres, including some of the largest and most popular, still have standard minimum shopping hours until 6pm, which doesn’t make the cut for many consumers. He uses the example of a parent who works until 5pm, then navigates through peakhour traffic to collect their children
from after-school care. Many consumers also work unconventional hours – from top executives and professionals to nursery school teachers and taxi drivers. “The point is that to make the sale, you need to be open for shoppers when they are able to shop,” Muller says. “It comes down to knowing your customer, understanding how they live, work and play, and what times are most convenient for them to shop with you. It also means that retailers and malls need to work together to find their optimal opening times.”
