With a selection of single-origin African bean cold-brew coffees, coffee tonic, herb sodas, and coffee skincare products, Barking is a one-stop coffee lovers’ paradise.

Q: What is the inspiration behind your herb sodas and coffee skincare range? A: We wanted to offer an alternative for those wanting something other than coffee. Having some herbs in the garden, the idea for cordials was sparked. We diluted the cordials with soda water, so that they were ready to drink, and Herb Soda was born. It turns out coffee grind has great benefits for your skin, and having a lot around we created the body scrub.

Q: Any future plans or events we can look out for? A: New markets are popping up all over the place, so hopefully we will be at a market near you soon. We would love for specialty food stores to stock our products, and we are gearing up to offer nitro coffee, which we are really excited about.

Husband and wife team Stephan and Janri Barker, are the masterminds behind Barking Speciality Coffee. Their surname was the inspiration behind the name and the dog – the Africanis, a dog shaped by Africa for Africa – that represents their brand. Janri’s love for good coffee started while she was studying and had to work late nights. Stephan’s love for coffee developed through spending a lot of time with Janri. When they started dating, Stephan still thought a good cappuc­ cino was made with cream and sugar, and now he is an even bigger coffee snob than Janri. Q: How did Barking Speciality Coffee come about? A: We were at the Pretoria Boeremark virtually every Saturday for our weekly shopping and thought having our own stall would be great. Being coffee enthusiasts, we were already roasting our own beans and making cold brew at home. The idea was an amal­ga­mation of our love for good coffee and our enjoy­ment of local markets. Q: What product would you recommend to a first-timer? A: For the purist, we recom­ mend the Original. For those with a sweet tooth, the Ca­ra­mel flavour. If you want something more exotic, you have to try the Coffee Tonic.

W

allpaper comes and goes as a trend as people gravitate towards patterned or plain walls. We’re currently seeing wall coverings come back into favour, and as tastes in art and design have evolved, so have their designs. The trend now is towards bold styles that draw the eye in – from trompe l’oeil images to more abstract designs that capture the eye with immersive patterns – rather than demure treatments that fade into the background. This trend has filtered down from higher-end, conceptual designs, where actual 3-D treatments are applied to walls to give them extra depth – visually and physically. Brands like Mutina, for example, offer a variety of patterns as tiled panels to create striking feature walls in the home. Translating this to wallpaper means that designers are attempting to create depth in their products without needing to layer the construction. Locally, offerings like Tiphaine Alston’s designs for Robin Sprong do this with a flat graphic form that uses colour and patterns to create a sense of texture. This more dynamic approach to wall coverings points to a broader shift in design. What was once considered tasteful – plain colour and unobtrusive prints – is now somewhat passé, and the new neutrals are more organic and structural. While this approach is obviously not something for every room of the house, the modern homeowner is more likely to experiment than their predecessors. This means that walls are not the backdrops to bolder designs – they are the canvas.

His work has been displayed internationally and has received many awards in art shows and exhibitions worldwide. Q: How did your business start? A: When I was young, teachers at school recognised that I had talent and I was always getting the top prize for craft works. Later on I didn’t want to be labelled as a Shona sculptor. I wanted to express my own inborn style which I call Muzondo Sculptures. I studied textile designing, printmaking and jewellery-making in Tanzania, as well as printmaking techniques in Austria. In Zimbabwe I had an established business, but eight years ago I decided to come to South Africa. It wasn’t easy as I had to introduce myself to all the art galleries. Luckily the Pretoria Art Association’s director put me in touch with lots of galleries. For a while I used space at the back of a gallery in Brooklyn (Long Street). We had art markets every Saturday. Slowly people started appreciating my work and it was starting to sell. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: When I was using the space in the back of the art gallery in Brooklyn and had a Saturday art market, I got invited by the Kara Heritage Institute to a function. Then I realised that I could register with them in order to get some space to exhibit my work at their premises.

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The working environment is great. If we make the proper arrangements, we can work for 24 hours. The institute is also doing some marketing on our behalf. The Kruger Museum will be opening next to us soon and these tourists will then also come and have a look at what we have to offer. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: A lot of other small crafts business owners share the space with me at the institute. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: These people are being very generous as we use the space for free. We assist by paying for water and electricity. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: Not a lot of people visit us here yet, but the institute is busy trying to change that. On Saturdays over 100 people can attend per day. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: As artists we are often limited because of funds. If I could afford it, I would like to buy a house somewhere with a big studio so people can come and visit me there. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: The Kara Heritage Institute has opened a website for us. Q: What’s your most popular item/service? A: My sculptures are very powerful and I love printmaking and people love it as well.

House price inflation declining

What the H economy needs most

ouse price inflation at the end of February was recorded at 5,2%, according to Lightstone’s latest House Price Index. As has been seen over the past six months, house price inflation has slowly been declining. Over the past 12 months this same decline was also seen in the high and luxury segments of the property market. The mid and lower segments, however, showed signs of resilience amid tough economic conditions and increased over the same period.

A

senior executive at one of South Africa’s largest listed companies recently made the comment that the debacle over Nhlanhla Nene’s dismissal as minister of finance last year may have been a blessing in disguise. This is because the fallout sparked a new level of engagement between the government and business to try to find solutions to this country’s economic problems. Some might argue that this is South African optimism at its extreme, but there can be little doubt that there has been a renewed sense of cooperation between these two sectors of society. In particular, Minister Pravin Gordhan has been eager to invite captains of industry to help the Treasury do what is necessary to try to prevent a credit downgrade from the international ratings agencies.

This is a simple equation. New entrants into the workforce will have better prospects of finding work and earning good incomes if they are well-educated and possess the skills that business needs. At the same time, businesses will be more productive if these skills are available when and where they need them. There may be many other things that need to be addressed, and a great deal else that South Africa needs to get right, but it really all starts there. Fixing the education system and focusing on skills development should be the government’s biggest empowerment objective. Hopefully the renewed engagement with business will make this abundantly clear.

Just as importantly, building a modern economy requires the right kind of workforce. PwC’s 19th Annual Global CEO Survey found that the majority of South African CEOs believe that government action is most needed in exactly this area. South Africa cannot hope to prosper unless its citizens have the right levels of education and the desired skills.

Africa’s first multibillion rand car-free village S wisatec, an architectural and project-management firm based in Cape Town, is set to build the first multibillion rand green village in Somerset West, Cape Town.

The village will be car-free with all parking to be underground, while apartments will use energy-efficient appliances, LED lighting, watermanagement systems from showers to

irrigation, solar water-heating systems, and self-generated solar power. Environmentally friendly building materials and methods will be used during construction, Swisatec said. Plans for the mixed-use Blue Rock Village include a multifunctional lifestyle centre, medical centres, boutiques, schools and colleges, nurseries, restaurants and cafes.

The development will comprise 1,000 luxury apartments built on 40ha of land.

Lukas Reichmuth, founder and director of Blue Rock Village, said the project would be market-driven, focusing on both the international and the South African markets. Units will start from R3,4m, at R40,000/m2.
