ince receiving the first golden buzzer on SA’s Got Talent last year (at the tender age of 10), Henno William has been gaining popularity throughout the country. At his Family Day concert he will release his first debut single, Beauty Queen.
Smaak Deli and Takeout Restaurant is uniquely different as spitbraai meals are served. The restaurant was developed because the Marés wanted to make their dishes available to the public daily. Mariette says their passion for cooking started after years of travelling the Caribbean Islands, the Mediterranean, Italy, Spain and France, where they absorbed culinary information about cultures and flavours.
“We started Dough Catering when Dylan made our first spitbraai in 2010 and focused mainly on creating lamb spitbraai meals at venues across Gauteng. Through Smaak Deli and Takeout Restaurant we are now able to showcase the meals we have been creating for the past five years,” says Mariette. The area the restaurant occupies, was previously an office which the Marés renovated into a restaurant, building in counters and their own trendy homemade furniture. The menu offers a variety of popular spitbraai meals including the lamb pita filled with lamb from their slow-cooking spitbraai, roma tomatoes, red onions, homemade aioli and herb oil. Try the sandwiches made with woodfired-oven-baked ciabatta, or seed loaf with toppings such as Parma ham and brie, and green figs with rocket.

Being around gorgeously styled food and drinks inspired Melissa to blur the lines between her photography and culinary skills. With her tried and tested, honest approach to the arts, Melissa shares some of her latest cocktail inventions with us.
To make the lavender honey syrup, combine boiling water with honey and stir until evenly mixed. Add lavender, and stir. Let cool for approximately 30 minutes, and then pour through a fine-mesh strainer to remove lavender. For the cocktail, combine all ingredients in a shaker full of ice. Shake vigorously for 10 seconds. Double strain into a cocktail glass and garnish with a lavender sprig.

Pear Moscow Mule Ingredients: • 2 shots vodka • ½ lime juice • Peartizer • ginger beer • dash of bitters • thinly sliced pears as garnish To prepare the cocktail, fill a glass with ice. Add the vodka and the lime juice. Fill the glass generously with Peartizer and then top off with a splash of ginger beer and a dash of bitters. Stir and serve with slices of pear.
Slushy CoconutMint Margarita Ingredients: • 250ml coconut milk • 125ml coconut water • 30ml agave syrup • 30ml lime juice • 2 shots tequila • 1 shot Triple Sec • mint and a lime slice for garnish Freeze one cup of coconut milk in an ice cube tray overnight. Once frozen, blend ice cubes with half a cup coconut water (or as much as you need) until slushy. Pour one cup coconut mixture into a chilled glass and add lime juice, tequila, Triple Sec and agave. Stir for 15 seconds. Garnish with mint and lime.

Jack Rabbit salted caramel Ingredients: • 1,5 cups of granulated sugar • 125g salted butter, cut into small pieces • 1 large can of coconut cream, alternatively 1 ½ cans of ideal milk • 2tsp of Maldon salt (or more to taste) Heat sugar in a non-stick saucepan over medium heat. A
s resources become increasingly scarce, there’s been a growing imperative for designers to craft products out of sustainable materials. When it comes to recycling and upcycling items into new products, however, the results are often quite naive and often purchased more for novelty than functionality or style. New manufacturing technologies are making this approach a thing of the past, however, with innovative recycled materials that are as desirable in their second lives as they were in their former lives. As technologies like 3D printing become increasingly mainstream, people’s perception of what materials should look like changes. As a result, recycled plastics, for example, are left in their semiraw state, with a finish that looks something like a modern marble. The products created by designer Carter Zufelt show this approach well. Rather than feeling like arts and crafts projects, his stools and desk decor are
equally futuristic and considered. On the even more conceptual edge of the spectrum, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has created an Eco-BLAC Brick made from discarded boiler ash. Developed in India, the designs turn industrial waste into building materials, negating the carbon footprint of producing new bricks and disposing of an otherwise unusable product at the same time. This trend towards more contemporary recycled materials is not to say that there is no place for the upcycling approach. Ultimately, it just opens up new avenues for designers to create sustainably focused products without being immediately categorised as crafts. Ultimately, there is no longer a clear distinction between sustainable design and mainstream design – the two are increasingly becoming the same thing.

brown liquid as you continue to stir. Once completely melted, immediately add the butter. When it has melted, quickly add the coconut cream/ideal milk while stirring. Allow the mixture to boil for one minute. Remove from the heat and stir in two teaspoons of salt and leave to cool. Should your caramel be lumpy, use a stick blender on medium high to work out the lumps.
Salted caramel and chocolate tart
Prepare sweet, shortcrust pastry, salted caramel and chocolate ganache. Pour a layer of salted caramel sauce into a pastry flan. Refrigerate for an hour or more until firm. Prepare chocolate ganache and cool slightly before pouring over the salted caramel layer. Refrigerate for approximately an hour and decorate with Easter eggs, salt flakes or some gold leaf. • South Africa is committed to the Integrated Resource Plan, an energy generation infrastructure development plan for 2010 to 2030.
It might feel like there’s never any good news about South Africa, but when it comes to solar power we are light years ahead of many countries WORDS: BRIDGET MCNULTY

• On a sunny day, solar power feeds more than 1MW onto the Eskom power grid – all the solar power plants are part of our electricity supply. • The government’s renewable energy site (energy.gov.za) tells us that most areas in South Africa average more than 2,500 hours of sunshine per year, making solar energy the most readily accessible resource in the country, and one of the highest in the world. • South Africa is currently 10th in the world for utility-scale solar power, according to Wiki-Solar, the leading authority on the deployment of utility-scale solar power. • The Cookhouse wind farm in the Eastern Cape is the biggest in Africa. It has 66 turbines generating 138MW of power and was built in only 11 months. • The George Airport in the Eastern Cape is Africa’s first solar-powered airport – a 200m2 solar power plant that will allow the airport to function entirely without Eskom. It is currently in its first phase and supplying 41% of the airport’s energy demand, with the capacity steadily increasing. • As load shedding becomes more and more of a reality in South
Africa, this trend of going off the grid and creating one’s own alternative energy such as solar power, is becoming more popular. • Countries like France have even made solar panels (or green roofs) mandatory for new builds in some areas.

It’s a sustainable and renewable (at least for a few billion years more) energy source. Solar panels need very little maintenance and have a lifespan of 20 to 30 years. It is silent, so you don’t have to worry about disturbing the neighbours. Though the manufacturing of equipment to create solar power may create pollution, solar power is a clean energy source. Though the initial equipment and installation costs can be expensive, in the long run it will be more financially viable to make use of solar power in your home – even partially.
Starting with solar doesn’t have to be a huge undertaking. You can take baby steps to slowly start getting off the grid by incorporating solar lanterns and lights, a small solar power kit or even a solar cooker for electricity-free cooking. If there’s one place where it makes sense to start thinking solar, it’s sunny South Africa!

e’re thinking green! Instead of being reactive to energy saving, let’s be proactive with these great tips on how to make your home more efficient.
Windows
A single pane of glass can lose almost 10 times as much heat as the same area of insulated wall. Consider installing double-pane windows with a low emissivity (low-E) coating to reduce the transfer of heat through windows. Different types of low-E coatings have been designed to allow for high solar gain, moderate solar gain, or low solar gain.
Window-to-wall ratio
The correct balance between glazed and wall surfaces in the external facades maximises daylight while minimising unwanted heat transfer, resulting in reduced energy consumption.
External shading devices
These will protect windows from direct sunlight, which increases both solar heat gain and glare. Designs that take advantage of summer and winter sun should be considered.
Natural ventilation
A natural ventilation strategy can improve occupant comfort by providing access to fresh air as well as reducing the temperature. This results in a reduction of the cooling load, which lowers initial capital and maintenance costs.
Heat pumps for hot water
These use electricity to transfer heat from the air to water in an enclosed tank instead of generating heat directly.
Energy-saving light bulbs
The use of CFL (compact fluorescent lamps), LED (light-emitting diode), or T5 lamps reduces the building’s energy use for lighting; heat gains are lowered, which in turn reduce cooling requirements. The service life of these types of bulbs is generally higher and maintenance costs are reduced.
Solar power
Solar photovoltaic panels reduce the amount of electricity required from the grid. Photovoltaic panels unlock the latent potential inherent in every building’s roof space to generate clean renewable energy from the sun.
Think smart
Smart meters reduce energy demand through increased awareness of energy consumption and can result in energy savings of 10% to 20%, as they are able to measure consumption in more detail than conventional meters.

outh Africa’s electricity problems and what the country should be doing to sort them out, have been major topics of discussion for some time. Currently most of the debate is around the government’s plan to build 9,600MW of nuclear power generation capacity and what this might cost. The figure of R1 trillion has been talked about, and this has scared a lot of people, since it’s difficult to see how the country could afford that at the moment. However, some industry experts say that this figure is overblown and there are ways of funding the programme that do make sense.
greater the diversity of sources feeding into the grid, the more secure the country’s power supply becomes. So while the country does need to add more baseload capacity, it can still benefit immensely from more solar projects. What has already been achieved should be applauded. But more critically the potential for what more can be done shouldn’t be neglected.
Nevertheless, South Africa has to find ways to produce reliable power at low cost. Constant increases in the price of electricity are hurting consumers and businesses, and so far there is very little to show for them. That is why the country’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Produ cer Programme has been such a welcome initiative. Whatever else might be happening in the power generation sector, this programme has been extremely successful.

A: As a professional electrical engineer, a scarce skill in our country, I decided to take advantage of this gap in the market by providing services to multiple employers at a time. The urge of being my own boss prompted me to open this company. At the beginning it was a challenge for me to leave my job, work on this idea of mine, and contribute to our growing economy. I pushed myself hard, and negative odds turned into my favour when I found myself unemployed, and I needed to fully commit my time to the company.
Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Our offices are based in Centurion, close to Centurion Mall, two major highways (N1 and N14) and the Gautrain Station, as well as my home. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We found the premises with the help of an estate agent who showed us a couple of places. This one caught my eye as the best premises to locate the business. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Our work involves lots of travelling in
and out of town going to project sites and meeting clients. Being close to highways and the Gautrain Station makes travelling very convenient. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We are located within a diverse business area. Our neighbours are beauty specialists, retail offices, the Council for Educators, and brand specialists. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: The rental space around this area is about R100/m2. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: We are not necessarily a walk-in service company. However, we do bid for projects and some times get referrals where we are requested to offer our services. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: With our country and the world’s energy challenges, our immediate expansion plans are focused on exploiting opportunities in the renewable energy sector. We want to offer alternative ener gy solutions to individuals and companies alike to reduce their dependency on the national grid or completely take them off the grid. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We are still busy with our branding project and putting up a proper website is part of the package. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Electrification projects, public lighting and emergency power generators.
To date, 6,363MW of renewable energy capacity has been procured. That is more than the eventual size of the new Medupi Power Station. What makes this even more exciting is that the cost of building and running these renewable energy projects is constantly coming down. Frost & Sullivan estimates that the total running costs for Medupi and Kusile, including things like water usage and CO2 emissions, will be about R2 per kilowatt hour. By comparison, solar power in South African can now be produced at under 70 cents per kilowatt hour. Of course, solar power has one major limitation, which is that in the absence of any effective way to store electricity, it needs the sun to shine in order to work. This means that farms are not generating power at night and potentially in the early morning when power needs are greatest. However, the benefits are so significant that it doesn’t make sense to focus on this issue. Most critical is that the
South Africa has procured more than 2,900MW of solar energy projects to date. That is more than one and a half times the capacity of the Koeberg nuclear plant.

UIP projects promise huge value

en ecent discussions between more Sapoa KZN, eThekwini ore Municipality and Urban d. MGT, a company that specialises in urban precinct management, have caused huge excitement in the greater Durban area, and promise significant things to come. Just eight months old, the Florida Road Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP) (a project managed by Urban MGT) has already had an enormous impact on the area. Says Dina Soukop, CEO, Soukop Property Group, who has head offices in Florida Road, “The difference is unbelievable! Not only is the area looking better and feeling safer, but we have had an unprecedented spike in demand for property in the area. While eight months ago, properties in
this road could stand empty for up to two months, they are now selling within 10 days. The rental situation is much the same with properties getting snapped up before they empty – we’ve recently had three offers on one property in two days.” The same improvement has been noted in Umhlanga Rocks UIP, also managed by Urban MGT since its inception in 2008. “The UIP project has changed the face of Umhlanga completely, with property prices having almost tripled in value over this time,” adds Dina. With Sapoa KZN, the municipality and Urban MGT in discussion about the development of UIP structures along the Durban Beachfront and City Centre, there is every reason to believe the whole of eThekwini will benefit.

52% of home loan applicants can pay a deposit
I
n the last year, the average price of homes on which new bonds were approved, rose by 6,3% to just over R1m, according to the latest statistics from BetterLife Home Loans. These figures also show that over the same period, the average approved bond size was R811,000, and that 52% of borrowers in the past 12 months were able to pay a deposit of one-fifth of the purchase price – or more – when applying for their home loans.
“This is a far cry from the days when 100% or no-deposit loans were the norm,” says Shaun Rademeyer, CEO, BetterLife Home Loans, “and it is very much in line with our on-the-ground experience, which is that SA consumers have become much more informed about their finances in general, and are putting a lot more financial preparation into becoming homeowners than they did a few years ago.” Rademeyer also says that first-time buyers, who have usually been the first to exit the market when the financial going gets tough, have been assisted to go ahead with their home purchasing plans over the past year by the fact that home prices in this sector grew by an average of just 2,3%.

Agent commentary Q: Who is buying property in the area? A: Moreleta Park has recently been particularly popular among buyers under the age of 49, with around 46,05% of recent buyers between the ages of 18 and 35 and 31,16% between the ages of 36 and 49. About 45% of existing homeowners are between 36 and 49. This age group also represents the highest percentage of recent sellers (42,4%). About 50% of the properties sold in Moreleta Park this past year fell in the R800,000 to R1,5m price bracket. However, the R800,000 to R1,5m price bracket (first-time buyers) and 100% bond buyers are showing a decrease in activity. We are also finding that the more expensive properties (R2m and up) are showing an increase in sales.
Q: How has the area changed over the last five years? A: Over recent years there has been a great increase in the number of business premises offering a large variety of services to residents. Rubenstein Drive and De Villabois Mareuil have also changed from residential to business properties. The ease of access to the main roads has increased the number of inhabitants commuting to work elsewhere. The suburb has a mixture of properties and although there has not been much change in the number of properties available to purchase, Moreleta Park in general is a great area for investors, first-time buyers and those looking to upscale and downscale. A: People buy in Moreleta Park because of the excellent investment opportunities, the upper-class lifestyle associated with the area, the availability of amenities such as quality schools, shopping malls, and access to all major routes in and out of the city. The residential areas of Moreleta Park are divided into estates (26,72%), freeholds (18,81%) and sectional schemes (54,47%). The biggest group of stable owners are in the age group 36 to 49. In the last 12 months, regardless of the tight economic situation, 634 properties were sold at a median price of R1,347m (the median price of the freeholds was R1,895m).
