THE VALUE OF A DOG-HUMAN RELATIONSHIP by Norm Shrout
H
ave you ever tested the reliability of your dog’s recall command? Getting a loose dog to come back to you depends partly on the degree of training that went into the recall, and ultimately the level of trust between you and your dog. It’s all about the relationship. Additionally, distractions must be factored in at the time of recall. If your dog is loose and casually sniffing a tree, your chances may be good. But, if the dog is giving chase to a cat, the recall results could be very different. Without a cohesive liaison, you cannot be certain that your dog will heed your request—and is it worth risking your dog’s safety? Training alone may not enough, as canine behaviorists have consistently demonstrated that the stronger your alliance with the dog, the better the chance of successfully recalling them. The relationship you build with a pup starts the moment you first make eye contact with them. Whether you realize it or not, your canine companion is keenly tuned into you, your body language and your everyday habits. If you make the extra effort to connect with them, especially early on, training becomes much easier. Imagine a dog that actually wants to work as a partner with you and looks forward to training sessions. Positively reinforcing your dog for good behaviors and for following your requests can further strengthen the human-dog bond. Once accomplished, your dog should willingly do anything you ask. However, what about other training methods? Many handlers don’t realize that the now-antiquated methods of punishing or dominating dogs have been proven less effective than rewardbased training. Harsher dog training methods utilizing shock collars, pinch collars and choke chains, incur a certain risk. How effective is a relationship based on fear? In fact, many dogs trained with these methods avoid their handlers while loose as well as during times of stress for fear of repercussions upon their return. Correspondingly, many dogs trained this way are much less likely to obey commands when their punishment-collars are off. Conversely, well-trained dogs with good pet-parent rapport are consistently more reliable both on and off leash.
Chain Collar Trade-In Don’t Meddle with Metal, Make Dog Training Fun!
Get a $10 CREDIT on a Freedom Harness or Gentle Leader when you trade in your dog’s metal collar. Ask the experts: “Dependence on a chain collar to suppress or acquire behaviors means that without the metal collar, behavior is unpredictable. Positive training creates a bond between human and dog based on trust, along with learning that is retained and eagerly repeated when requested.
”Lauren Ranghelli, KPA-CPT of Andiamo Dog Training!” treats, food, and other daily life essentials. Examples might be holding a sit before a meal, or waiting at the door for permission to cross the threshold, or maintaining a downstay before greeting their favorite visiting guests. Along with proper training, these types of structure-based activities help improve safe dog handling, but also solidify the connection between dogs and their people.
The relationship you build with a pup starts the moment you first make eye contact with them.
So what can be done to strengthen this type of reliability? One of the keys is to diminish a dog’s desire for instant gratification. This practice redirects their focus back to us. We can enhance this focus by asking them to earn their
In closing, dogs benefit from lifestyle stability and positive treatment, which in turn strengthen their human-dog connection and overall trust in us. As their guardians and partners, it should be our pleasure to provide for these needs, just as it should be enjoyable for the dogs to work with us. Think of it as a mutually beneficial, long-term investment in their safety, enrichment and well-being. If you put it in practice, the next time your dog needs a recall from a potentially dangerous situation, you can be more confident in their expedient return. @yourpetnm

WHEN
THE
LITTER BOX AN ISSUE BECOMES
PART 1
By Lisa McKitrick and Jeff Smith
A
week after Thanksgiving we received a desperate plea for help from Jeff’s out-of-state sister. Her cat hadn’t been using the litter box for several days and, not surprisingly, the situation was getting tense. Why was the cat suddenly avoiding the litter box and leaving messes all over the house? We certainly understood his sister’s frustration, but we also knew that her kitty wasn’t being “bad” just for the sake of being bad. The cat was in distress of some sort, and eliminating outside the box was a clear signal of that distress. In such situations, the challenge for us humans is to determine the cause of the distress, which means using human logic to try to understand cat logic. (No, “cat logic” is not an oxymoron!) The things that can stress a cat out range from the obvious and understandable (a new pet in the household), to the head-scratchingly bizarre (a favorite chair gets moved six inches to the left). Generally speaking, the causes of distress that lead to litter box avoidance fall into three categories: medical, psychological/behavioral, and environmental. In this issue we will cover two of the categories. Medical Reasons for Litter Box Avoidance Any time a cat suddenly starts going outside the box, medical issues should be the first line of investigation. Cats with urinary tract infections (UTIs) and urinary crystals will often urinate outside the litter box, and this is often the first sign that your cat is seriously ill. Not only are these conditions painful, they can quickly turn deadly, so it is crucial to seek veterinary care, especially if you see your cat straining or notice any blood in the urine. Chronic medical conditions such as kidney failure or diabetes often cause larger than normal urine volumes, which can contribute to outside-the-box behavior due to simply having to GO NOW. Older cats with joint and mobility issues may start avoiding the box due to pain or discomfort while getting into the box or squatting. Managing and mitigating the effects of these conditions may improve litter box compliance. Is your cat declawed? Problems that cause pain such as nail regrowth below the skin can happen years after declawing. If your cat has been declawed, you should regularly check the paws to confirm that they are in good condition. If you are considering declawing a new kitten… please don’t! Declawing is by far the number one cause of permanent litter box aversion, as well as other long-term behavioral problems.
Psychological/Behavioral Reasons for Avoiding the Box Felines are all about resources, whether it be food, space, human attention, or playtime. Cats that feel their resources are being threatened may become anxious and respond by eliminating in inappropriate places. Reduce any anxiety about food by feeding at consistent mealtimes and making sure your kitty is not having to compete for access to the food bowl. Vertical living space is usually more valuable to a cat than horizontal space, so providing cat trees and other means of reaching elevated areas in your home can make your feline feel more secure. Giving your cat the type and amount of human interaction she enjoys is crucial to maintaining her contentment within the home. Whether it’s playing with a favorite wand toy, or hanging out together on the couch binge-watching “Game of Thrones,” be sure your kitty is getting enough YOU time. For the times when you are not around to provide entertainment and companionship, offer plenty of indoor enrichment (toys, cat trees and scratchers, cat-friendly videos, window perches, etc.) to stave off anxiety-inducing boredom. If your kitty is having unpleasant interactions with any members of the household, the stress can lead to behavioral issues, including litter box problems. Sometimes the unpleasant interactions can be with other furry family members. Aggressive or dominating behavior from one cat can often cause another cat to find “safer” locations for eliminating. Sometimes such problems can be improved or solved by adding more cat-only areas or cat furniture, increasing time or frequency of family play-time and treat-time, or using pheromone emitting products to reduce tensions in multi-cat households. In some cases, aggression can be severe enough that it requires the pets to be fully separated when they cannot be supervised. Sometimes the unpleasant interactions can be with other humans – whether it be other household members, friends, or occasional visitors. Needless to say, a cat that does not feel safe around humans will not feel safe no matter where they are eliminating, and will choose a location that seems safe at the time for where to go. For this reason, you should remember to never punish a cat for inappropriate elimination. The cat will not understand your anger or irritation, and can easily become scared by angry humans. Becoming more fearful will often lead to increased problems with elimination, the exact opposite of the desired outcome. The same is true for dogs!

Dogs with Jobs b y ANNE L AM bERT
Our society has changed immensely in the past fifty years. At that time, dogs abounded, but in fenced yards or on chains, even running the neighborhoods free. One place you rarely saw a dog was in public. Dogs didn’t go with you. Period. Today however, that is definitely not the case. Dogs are our friends, if not family. We take them on camping trips, hiking, for a walk, even to restaurants with open patios. Dogs are definitely IN. This has led to a growing problem. We have made gigantic strides in discovering what dogs can do to help us. Three dog careers that have sprung up are Service Dogs, Emotional Support Dogs and Therapy dogs. They each have
10

different responsibilities and can, by definition, go to different places. Therapy Dogs are trained to provide comforting in hospitals. They visit, they cuddle and do tricks. A hospital is the ONLY place they can go. These dogs do a wonderful job working with patients, but that is the extent of their duties. Emotional Support Dogs are self trained by their owners. They are not allowed anywhere except on planes, and those rules are changing as I write. These animals were allowed to accompany their people on the plane to provide support as long as they had a note by a psychologist or psychiatrist. Because of a lack of training, they frequently caused issues when put into a situation where people are packed like sardines into a tin. There is no personal space on a plane and the dog, dragged into an unfamiliar situation and frightened, would snap or bite. At the moment, airlines and the DOT are crafting rules that will keep everyone safe. It must be noted that although the owner may feel the need to have their animal around constantly, these animals are not allowed anywhere dogs are not allowed.
Our last category is the Service Dog. This dog accompanies a person with a disability. This dog may or may not wear a vest. The Americans with Disabilities Act, which governs and sets standards for these dogs, does not require that they were any defining sign. The ADA states that they may accompany their owners anywhere the general public is allowed. That means anywhere you can go without special permission, these dogs are allowed. Movies, restaurants, hospitals, grocery stores are all places you may run into them.
we help people see
Over the past ten years or so, service dog vests have been for sale on online sites. They say Service Dog. They guarantee registration. They are frauds. There is, according to the ADA, NO REGISTRY for Service dogs. They are scammers, selling a vest and “registration” with no legal power whatsoever. Some will purchase these vests and the “registration” in an effort to provide legitimacy to taking their dog wherever they want. This is a federal crime. Among other things, the dogs are not trained as Service Dogs. It literally takes years to train these dogs and the training is readily apparent when you see them side by side. If you see a man being dragged by his dog, that dog is NOT a Service Dog. If that dog growls or threatens, it is not a service dog. If it sniffs at merchandise, it is not a service dog. If it pulls its owner along, it is not a service dog unless that person is mobility challenged and it is assisting in that. It eats from the table or sits on a chair in a restaurant, it is not a service dog. If it relieves itself inside, it is not a service dog. These people are willing to break federal law to bring it into the public. It is dangerous.

Best Pets Pet Food By Monica Pompeo
If you’re like most pet owners, you want food that is of the highest quality for your bird, cat, dog, ferret, horse or mouse, and everyone in between. Now, the absolute freshest and most natural food, for all of them is attainable with one quick stop at Best Pets Pet Food – a pet-treat boutique, conveniently located in mid-town. Upon entering Best Pets Pet Food, the air smells heavenly, exactly like anyone would expect a bakery to smell, even better actually, because most of the ingredients are not only organic but local as well (nothing artificial). Anna and Naomi (both of whom are charming) looked wonderfully domestic in their aprons; they were using rolling pins to roll out dough, cut heart-shaped, bone-shaped, and dog silhouette shapes, then use a spatula to place the naturally sweet dough shapes on a cookie sheet before popping it into a hot oven. Baking ingredients like organic quinoa flour, peanut butter, and pumpkin filled the shop with the wonderfully warm smell of cookie delights. Pet Pizzas are a menu staple: supreme, fruity, meaty, and veggie; the crust is made from non-wheat flour and peanut butter. Apple Knots are apples-n-bone broth on a stick, and just one of many delectable frozen treats that fill the freezer at Best Pets Pet Food. Doggie Fries? Yes! Made from organic coconut oil, cinnamon, turmeric, and sweet potatoes. Does your pet have an allergy or any
special dietary requirements? Anna specializes and delights in creating whatever you or your vet recommend that your pet(s) eat. A finicky feline might appreciate some baked salmon skins or special kitty kibbles, but if he or she doesn’t, well, then Naomi is always up for the challenge of experimenting until she figures out what would make your cat purr for more. The shelves at Best Pets Pet Food are chock full of bags of basmati rice, jars of local honey, bags of organic coconut flour, and boxes of oats. I helped myself to some cookie delights as well as a peanut butter ball, I ate pet food; it tasted unbelievably delicious, and knowing how pure it was made me feel good about what I was eating. Beef liver is cooked and the end result is a jerky that no dog will refuse. All meat products come from Keller’s Farm Stores. It gets better . . . a line of handcrafted shampoos and conditioners for pets is in the works, and will be available soon. Colorful handmade leashes, and attractive, hand-sewn scarves in several sizes made from darling printed fabrics are always in stock. A basket full of truly unique, whacky, rubber fake-food squeak toys made me want to take some lucky dog to the park to play fetch. Do stop by; and be sure to bring all of your “foodie” requests along with your pet who will love you for it.

“Secrets” Your Cat Wants You to Know!
Y
our kitty has a killer instinct, and playtime should be all about hunting prey! One of the most important things you can do to appeal to kitty’s natural instincts is simulating a good hunt with Prey Play. Good for mental and physical health, Prey Play also contributes greatly to their quality of life and improves the bond between you and your cat.
The kill bite is significant because it releases serotonin in the cat’s brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the brain that serves to regulate the cat’s mood, sleep-wake cycle, level of arousal, and sensitivity to pain/stimuli. A deficit of serotonin may manifest as hyperactivity, aggression, hypersensitivity, restless sleep and other behavior issues.
What is Prey Play and why is it important?
What Toys to Use?
Prey Play is interactive simulation of the stare-stalkpounce-kill predatory sequence your cat uses when hunting. While bird feeders at the window are important enrichment, watching isn’t enough; cats are born with a deep instinct for hunting and chasing. In fact, cats in the wild spend between 6-8 hours a day stalking and hunting. Indoor cats have no real prey to hunt, but your cat still needs to express this natural behavior, and when they can’t, it results in pent-up energy. This pent-up energy can express itself in behavior issues such as: aggression (towards you or other cats), destruction (of things like your furniture), obsessive-compulsive disorders and health issues.
The Prey Play sequence consists of four parts: 1. Spotting – seeing something move that looks like prey 2. Stalking/Chasing – this could be a slow, inching forward motion or a giant leap in the air 3. Pouncing – paw grabbing, body immobilizing 4. Kill Bite – the most important part of the sequence; kitty delivers a fatal bite to the prey 14 Your pet Magazine | @yourpetnm
Typically, fishing pole type wand toys are best – these toys have long shafts with feathers, crinkle paper, or “mice” dangling from the end of them. They require you to maneuver them. Try different types of toys to see what your cat reacts to best, and when you’re finished playing, be sure to put it away so kitty doesn’t get bored with it. If you tempt kitties with your body parts (fingers and toes), instead of a proper toy, they will play-attack which often leads to play aggression – scratching and biting humans inappropriately. It is important your cat learn that hands are for loving and feeding, not prey. If you are guilty of hand play, the next time your cat “attacks” your hands or feet, divert their attention to a wand toy or by throwing a ball or crumpled paper. You are not being mean by redirecting your cat’s play (aggression); if anything your relationship with your cat will improve. Don’t substitute laser lights for the prey toy; kitty can’t sink teeth into the light beam and this type of play actually builds up more tension and stress.
How to Prey Play To get your cat’s attention, it’s important to make the wand toy act like prey would; don’t wave it around frantically just to give your cat an aerobic workout, and don’t bop
”
Teach children how to properly Prey Play with kitty – it’s a great way for both of them to burn some energy! them in the face with it. Move the prey toy quickly across the floor away from your cat like a mouse, or pop it on the floor and make it “fly” into the air like a bird. Kitties can’t help but chase something that disappears around a corner, so be sure to drag it slowly out of sight. Alternate between fast and slow motions so it gives kitty time to plan the next move. Be patient and allow your cat the time to become interested. Let them wiggle butt, pounce and bite the toy a bit before yanking it away for round two. Teach children how to properly Prey Play with kitty – it’s a great way for both of them to burn some energy!
Timing is Important Prey Play 30 minutes before kitty’s bedtime meal. It can encourage a good appetite and help your cat sleep through the night until morning. But be sure to time the sessions with your own cat’s rhythms; if a mid-morning zoom around is when she is most active, indulge that! Prey Play should last about 10-15 minutes.
Prey Play with Multiple Cats With the exception of lions, cats are solitary hunters; instinctively, your domestic house cats do not hunt together. Because of this, if you have a multi-cat household, it’s important to avoid trying to Prey Play in groups. Taking turns at the toy can mistakenly encourage competition and instigate territorial disputes that lead to ongoing aggression between cats. The best course of action would be to let each cat play with them one at a time. Remember to have fun! You’ll be amazed at how much more affectionate and confident your cat becomes with daily Prey Play sessions. Learn more at www.catbehaviorsolutions.org

DAY CARE Doggy Day Care is a dog gone fun way to give your pup exercise, mental stimulation and socialization with both dogs and people. Your pup will ‘dig’ our climate-controlled indoor play yards, and they can also get some fresh air and have fun in our large outdoor play yards. It’s no mystery that dogs love Day Care at Camp Bow Wow - you can tell by the way they whine and bark with excitement and the way they pull their parents from the parking lot through the front door. Your dog will play all day with furry friends and leave tired!
BOARDING Overnight Campers enjoy all-day play and are tucked away each night in an individual Cabin with a comfy cot and fleece blanket. As the sun sets, each Camper unwinds by enjoying a delicious Campfire Treat™. Feel free to check-in on your Camper from anywhere by using our live webcams online. Rest easy knowing your dog is well-cared for in our secure environment that is monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
CAMP BOW WOW OFFERS FUN & SAFE DOGGY DAY CARE AND BOARDING WHERE DOGS PLAY ALL DAY WITH FURRY FRIENDS IN SPACIOUS PLAY YARDS WHILE GETTING LOTS OF LOVE AND TLC FROM OUR CAMP COUNSELORS. IF YOUR DOG IS LONELY AT HOME, BRING THEM TO CAMP! CAMP BOW WOW ENRICHES DOGS' LIVES BY PROVIDING EXERCISE, SOCIALIZATION AND MORE. @campbowwow/albuquerque

o you’ve decided to take your cat to the vet and now have to figure out how to get this ball of fur, teeth, and claws to the vet. The biggest key is to have a way to control/contain the cat. While there are some cats who are great at being walked on a leash, this may not be the best option for coming into the vet clinic. The lobby is a great unknown entity, it may be empty when you arrive only to have a large Irish hellhound appear and frighten your cat. Or it may be full of yappy terriers, who would be only too content to chase your cat as ferociously as it would a squirrel. That leaves the dreaded carrier, the cat’s nemesis.
There are ways to make the carrier not quite as horrific a place. A towel in the bottom can provide comfort and gives the cat something to hold onto when you turn the corner into the clinic. There is a spray product called “Feliway” that contains the cat facial hormone (that hormone they rub everywhere when they’re happy). Spraying this in the carrier can help keep your cat calmer.
Southwest Veterinary Medical Center is proud to serve Corrales, Rio Rancho, Albuquerque Westside, North Valley and surrounding areas.
But how, you ask, do I get the cat into the carrier in the first place? Part of this can be solved with carrier selection. Carriers that have a top-loading feature provide a larger target to aim for with cat in hand. Gathering the cat’s feet to prevent the splay legged carrier dodge can help get the cat in. If you don’t have a top loader, putting the carrier on end so that you are still loading the cat from the “top” can help as well. Some people also suggest loading the cat back end first so that they don’t see it coming. Plan time for the carrier loading and, if possible, try to get cat and carrier into a place where the cat cannot get to some unreachable location. Some people will place the carrier in the desired location a few days ahead of time so that the cat gets used to it. Whatever your method, the carrier provides the cat with a safe location it cannot escape from should the vet clinic lobby startle your cat. And be forewarned, your cat will likely get into the carrier more easily for us at the clinic as it became the safe spot during the span of the appointment.

Noah’s Bark Grooming Salon Noah’s Bark Grooming Salon. This faith-based, family-owned, local pet-grooming salon was born on two primary foundations. A prayer and a hope. A hope to bridge the many gaps in all Pet Focused sectors. Pastors Cesar and Lanora, and their two Groomer Apprentice Children, Angel and Adriano, all participate in this radical family endeavor. Since having opened in early May of this year, the business has blossomed from a vision to an Oasis of joy and fun. A place where natural light is in abundance and the concept of “spacious”, is fully seen. Vowing to accept your appointments, even on the busiest of days. You walk in and you’re immediately greeted like family and spoken towards like you and your pet, are the only two in the room. And your pet suddenly reacts like they’ve known Noah’s for years. Services are defined as Premium. Where they’ve made the impossible, possible. Nails are not simply clipped, but filed and sculpted. Each bath receives a conditioning to compliment. And each set

of teeth receive the Enzymatic Experience. And guess what, all of these are included at the base price. Upcharges exist only for heavily matted pets. Nothing more. They cater to a wide variety of pets. Though dogs make up the bulk of the pack, they brought forth their wildly successful concept of the “Underserved Market Day”. A day that welcomes all pets, non-canine. From cats to bunnies. Mini-pigs to dwarf-goats. No they’re not joking, they took the “Noah’s (B) Ark” concept, and realized a vision! Future plans are in the works on the Eastside of the building. For a nicely sized, fenced in pet park. Noah’s Park. It would include benches, shade and an area for animal to mingle and socialize. Or simply soak up the Sun. All under supervision. Events such as pet adoptions, meet and greets and community outreach will all take place here. So with all this being said, the question remains… Have you been to Noah’s Bark Grooming Salon? Call, text, email or message on Facebook, for your next appointment!
