Dry kibble. Canned food. Pouched food. Raw food. Freeze-dried food. Air-dried food. Dehydrated food. So many food options are now available for your kitty, but which are best? Before considering the form of food you should feed your feline, it’s important to consider the content of food you should be feeding. Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they require a meatbased diet in order to obtain all the nutrients their bodies need for optimal health. In the wild, a cat’s natural diet would consist of rodents, birds, insects, and lizards – a raw diet that’s high in moisture, high in protein, moderate in fat, and low in carbohydrates.

When trying to decide what to feed your cat, it’s obviously best to follow Mother Nature’s model of a meat-based diet that’s high in moisture, low in carbs, and minimally processed. Commercially available frozen raw foods meet these criteria while taking the guesswork and hassle out of preparing nutritionally adequate raw meals yourself. Consisting primarily of raw muscle meat, raw organ meat, and bone, these complete and balanced diets reasonably approximate the wild diet of a carnivorous predator. A growing number of freeze-dried and dehydrated raw food products are now available that provide the nutritional benefits of frozen raw food without the need to thaw. Simply adding warm water – yes, hydration! – to these shelf-stable foods creates a meal that is tasty, aromatic, and carnivore-friendly. Freezedried and dehydrated raw foods are a very convenient way to add minimally processed food to your cat’s diet.
Lack of proper hydration makes it harder for your cat’s kidneys to function, and also increases the likelihood of bladder stones, crystals, and blockages forming.
Modern housecats are descended from small African wildcats that originated in the Middle Eastern desert, and as such they don’t have a strong thirst mechanism. There’s rarely water available to drink in the desert, so what’s the point of getting thirsty? Just like their desert-dwelling ancestors, our companion kitties are anatomically and physiologically designed to get their hydration needs met from the foods they consume, whether it’s a juicy, fresh-caught mouse, or the store-bought food we put in their bowl. If a cat doesn’t get sufficient water intake from the food she consumes, she may not make up the difference at

Focus & Leave It by anne lambert
Lifestyles today are relaxed, right down to and including taking your dog out with you for your enjoyment and theirs. Restaurants abound with outside seating, and there are dog parks and dog friendly stores for you and your friend to explore together. While this is wonderful, there is no guarantee that the dog and owner shopping or visiting while you are there have the same care and training you and your dog have pursued. There are two commands that can help you regain control in any situation. These are focus and leave it. Focus and leave it may be the most important tasks you ever teach your dogs. They are for the safety of the dog. Part of any upper echelon dog class, these commands give you the tools to be good partners. We’ll begin with focus. First, take a small treat your dog enjoys. When you have his attention, begin training. Hold the treat up near your nose, relatively close to your eyes, and tell your dog focus. The dog will be confused at first and look to you for guidance. That is exactly what you want. As soon as its eyes meet yours, use the clicker or tell it yes in a happy tone and give it the treat. Repeat, making certain hits eyes meet yours every time. Gradually lengthen the time your dog focuses on you until it is familiar with the proper response. Then take them out in public, around other dogs, wherever there are distractions. Practice in public until no matter what is happening your dog will cease whatever they’re doing and focus on you.

This command is vital to your dogs safety. It guarantees that his attention will return to you immediately whenever you need him to. I have used this command to stop fights by providing distraction and focus for the dog when needed. Leave it is another command that uses partnered obedience to keep the dog safe. It’s a bit more difficult than focus, but just as necessary. Take two treats. Holding your dog, place one treat on the floor, restraining your dog with your other hand. Show the dog the treat you have in your hand and tell the dog what a good dog it’s been to “leave it” with the treat on the floor. Then release the dog with the command “take it” or “get it”. Repeat. As before, lengthen the time between the command to leave it and the permission to take it. Also, slowly phase out the secondary treat used to get your dogs attention off the original treat on the floor. This command can also be used to “leave” another dog, toy or anything else alone. Although this is a more difficult concept to teach, it can keep you dog from food items that may hurt it, such as chocolate, as well as another dog or person.

Her company is Beyond Public Access and she also works with Duke City Dog Training Academy teaching their service dogs clients. Grooming Doggie Den & Boarding
by monica pompeo Doggie Den Grooming & Boarding is a unisex salon (and more) for creatures of the canine persuasion. Owner, Dawn Rivas and her daughter, Dymond Garcia, schooled me on the grooming scene. While Dymond and I chatted about what’s what and who’s who at the Doggie Den, ‘Old Man Murphy’ was being picked up by his owner, and oh my did he look handsome, having just been groomed earlier in the day. I’m told Murphy has been a regular client at Doggie Den for years. So, what grooming services are offered, and what’s the best advice to keep a dog looking gorgeous. Many folks like to have their dog’s fur grow out during winter months, and while that’s fine, it’s a good idea to, nevertheless, still bring Spot or Fluffy in to have their fur brushed out and nails attended to. Otherwise, I’m told that by the time spring arrives, the grown-out fur can be so matted that it’s uncomfortable for the dog to have it tamed; and nails should be trimmed every six weeks or some painful problems for the pooch could make clipping quite a chore. A unique service at Doggie Den is having a dog’s fur airbrushed into a colorful design, which could make he or she the envy of the neighborhood at the park or promenade. After a pooch is groomed, they are offered a choice of an item or two from the Finishing Bar: A bandana, neck tie or bows, which come in an array of colors, and can really enhance the look of freshly groomed fur.

Dymond shared some striking Before and After pics of her beloved Bichon Frise, Pal, who prefers the fur on his crown pulled back and fastened with colorful twisty-hair-ties. All pooches are offered a chicken/sweet potato roll (diet permitting) on his or her way out. All-in-all, every pet at the Doggie Den appeared content and happy to be out of the house for a few hours spending time among old friends and newly acquired acquaintances.

So, what’s it like to own a Pot Bellied Pig

’m sure it’s a wonderful experience, but just to be certain, I paid a visit to Ranch of the Little Hearts and I sat down one-onone with owner and breeder, Dawn Rivas.
Dawn is a real sweetheart who couldn’t hide her love or affection for these darling little pigs (she’s been at this unique endeavor for well over three years) “Kisses,” a female pig, joined us; she happily soaked up all of Dawn’s kisses while having her belly rubbed, and soon nodded off into dreamland while we chatted. I asked Dawn some questions from a “what if” perspective:
in a few ways. However, in spite of being predatory creatures, they can be leash trained, although it’s best to do so early on; otherwise a pig finds it quite intrusive when a leash makes he or she feel as if some of its freedom is being infringed upon. Pigs require a harness which is designed in accordance to their unique anatomy. A pot-bellied pig’s head is smaller than its neck; its neck & girth are equal in size.
What if I wanted to adopt one of these pigs… once born, how soon could it come home with me; what could I expect once I got it home … and what if I wanted two?!
There’s not much shedding with pigs, so a bath can be given less frequently than with a dog.
Dawn told me that a baby pig gets weaned when it is about four or five weeks old; once it shows interest in pig-pellet food, she knows it’s ready for an adoptive home.
More good news: pigs can do stairs and jump up onto a bed (if allowed), with no problems whatsoever.

They like to be fed in the a.m. and again in the p.m.; and wel-
come in-between snacks which should be limited to fruits and veggies with some Cheerios thrown in. Dawn says these types of snacks ensure healthy weight and skin. Each pig is individual of course, so weight should be monitored as such. A mini pig’s weight reaches 40-70 lbs. Two pigs can get along famously but there’s a catch — adopt them at the same time because later on, after he or she has become accustomed to its territory and owner’s attention, well things could get rough -- a jealous pig is no fun at all! Pigs can live happily with both dogs and cats, but they are sensitive to any stranger in the house. Pigs love short car rides, but again it’s best to have this activity introduced early on, otherwise you may not be able to interest your pet in riding about town with you. They love to snuggle, and appreciate lots of blankets in addition to hugs and cuddling. Early bonding is essential otherwise pigs, being quite independent creatures, may not be interested in warming up to you later on; they’re terribly sweet, but they’ve got their pride!
All pigs leave Dawn’s ranch fully pottytrained; males are neutered, but females can’t get spayed until much later on.
Wish to own a unique pet, which is overloaded in cuteness and needs pure motherly care? Potbellied pigs are very intelligent. Pot bellied pigs are social, fun to play with and trainable. They adapt very well to children, other pets and to the environment.

Once you get your little darling home, it’s best to confine he or she in an enclosed area with potty-pads; once they acclimate to their new environment, they can have their run of the house, and won’t let you down. Eventually they’ll prefer to evacuate outside, and aren’t shy about letting you know when they need to ‘go’ by pushing against the door with their head. Dawn assures me that noise-wise there’s not much oinking or squealing, as long as they are fed and cared for properly. I didn’t leave with a pig but I’m definitely going back for a visit soon once the next litter arrives.

Cute and cuddly but not to be messed with, skunks can pose a threat to pets and humans alike. With 6 species roaming North America, coming across these black and white creatures can be easy. Active during dawn and dusk, skunks do not see very well but have excellent hearing and sense of smell. Spraying their noxious perfume is part of their defense mechanism, but it is used as the second line of defense, rather than their first. First they will warn off what they perceive as a threat with hissing, stamping their feet, and raising their tail. If unheeded, they spray their musk which is in reality anal gland secretions. The secretions can be accurately sprayed 7-15ft. It is a potent combo of 7 major volatile components including thiols, which cause the sulfur odor, and thioacetates, which react with water to become smelly; this last component explains why some animals will smell worse after a bath. Besides the smell, the most common clinical signs that a pet has been skunked are related to irritation because of the spray and where it came into contact. Redness and swelling around the eyes, squinting and rubbing of the face can be seen. Rolling, sneezing, and vomiting may also be seen. For the majority of cases this is the norm and pet decontamination is key to treatment. Eyes should be flushed with water first. Bathing is the next step. Though there are some over the counter de-skunking shampoos available, the most reliable is a mixture that can be made at home.

Combine the following ingredients: 1 quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide
• 1/4 cup backing soda • 1-2tsp of liquid dishwashing detergent (+/- 1 quart water for larger dogs) The mixture must be used promptly and cannot be stored in a closed container as the chemical reactions with the ingredients can create extreme pressures. Apply the solution, working it into the fur, and let stand 10 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and repeat if necessary. Mild bleaching of the fur is a possibility because of the hydrogen peroxide. Though most notably feared for the extremely unpleasant odor of their spray, the effects of the spray can be dangerous as well irritating in very rare cases. Pets who do experience multiple exposures or heavy sprays may have a rare, but deadly complication where damage to hemoglobin causes methemoglobinemia and heinze body anemia . For the pet this means decreased ability to take oxygen to all the tissues of the body and can result in blue gums, shortness of breath, extreme fatigue, seizures and even death. The multiple or heavily sprayed pets as well as any with bite wounds (skunks can carry rabies), should be taken in to be seen by a veterinarian. In the end, when it comes to these cute, black and white creatures, it is the best to avoid them and listen to their attempts to tell you and your pet to “skunk off”. Everyone will be happier and fresher smelling as a result. Still independently owned and operated for over 40 years!

Siberian Husky Rescue of New Mexico An all-volunteer, 501 (c)(3) rescue organization devoted to rescuing, rehabilitating, and finding new, permanent, loving homes for Siberian Huskies, and often, husky mixes that have ended up neglected, abused, or unwanted. We generally take in and place dogs within New Mexico; however, occasionally, we can take and place dogs out-of-state. However, we prefer to work with potential adopters and other husky rescue organizations to ensure matches are found within their state. The organization began in late 1998 when a red Siberian husky, that was not expected to live much longer due to her injuries, was saved from a local shelter by the organization’s founder. Over time, as Cinnamon recovered from her injuries, she not only survived but thrived, proving to be a Christmas miracle! Thus was born our motto “Saving Siberians, one life at a time.” From those humble beginnings, many more huskies have found their way to the organization, where people across NM have volunteered their time, opened their homes, and donated funds to support this cause - for the love of the Siberian husky.

Is a Siberian Husky the right dog for you? Siberian Huskies are beautiful, but independent-minded and require lots of exercise. They typically get into trouble when they don’t get adequate walking, running, hiking, or biking with their humans! They are very social and tend to get along well with other dogs and children, but don’t usually do well in single dog environments unless their human is home most of the time.
