THE CHANGE IN THE LANDSCAPE OF Indian cinema over the past few years is conspicuous. The recent past has seen the rise of a plethora of immensely talented directors, actors and filmmakers who genuinely believe that filmmaking is first about passion and integrity and then about commerce. Naturally, everyone in the industry wants to be commercially successful. Nevertheless, the quality of the film cannot be tampered with just to sell double the tickets. Such is the passion and grit of the filmmakers of today. This issue of Yours Youthfully is humble attempt to throw light on a few of the directors and actors who relentlessly search for 'meaningful' cinema believe in filmmaking in a very different, realistic way. Gangs of Wasseypur actors Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Pankaj Tripathi have been interviewed in order to delve into the minds of the actors who think differently and try their best to gel class with commercialism. The list of such m e a n i n g f u l d i re c to r s a n d a c to r s i s humungous in today's scenario, but this issue takes a look at a few prominent ones. Special thanks to our columnist Akshay Singh for the interviews and putting together some really good articles. The London 2012 Olympics concluded with mixed emotions. India doubled its medal tally, but sadly could not win the gold. On the other hand, some legends like Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt continued to mesmerize the crowds. Special focus has been put on fashion and style this time. Fashion columnists Tanya Gaffney and Ekta Batra tell about the little black dress and how to don the 50’s look. And Tanya Daraad gets the choicest Indian wines!

@MTV Rises to Rule
by Anirudh Mani Coke Studio, the musical initiative by the Coca Cola Company, is in its second season this year after a much disappointing first season. Last year, the expectations were high from the show after the Indian audiences had been grooving to the Coke Studio Pakistan for some time, but the
10 YY AUGUST 2012
show's then Music Producer Leslie Lewis failed to make the show meet its anticipators' expectations. But it's a new year, hopefully not the last (we don't believe the Mayans) and Coke Studio Management has turned things around, undoubtedly for the better. The format of the
show has changed, featuring a new Producer for a new episode, but the idea fusing of different musical elements still lies at the core of this show. This assumedly comes from the fact that last season the show got stuck at one point of time with nothing new to look forward to, and this season having already
completed 4 episodes at the time of writing this article, has given this widely popular Program a major uplift in the country. So, Coke Studio @ MTV finally meets its hype and expectations and dreams and? Yes, looks like it, but obviously a year late!
MUSIC This season is featuring some of the biggest producers in the industry of our times. The 7 Producers slated to satisfy audiences' musical tastes:
CLINTON CEREJO If you like 'Kya Karoon' from Wake Up Sid and still can't get enough of the song, then blame this man. Clinton Cerejo's composition and arrangement skills have been brought forth to the forefront in the opening episode of the season. 'Madari', is highly recommended but at the s a m e t i m e i t s ve r y addictive, so don’t tell us later that we did not warn you!
AMIT TRIVEDI This name is synonymous with some of the most melodic, fresh and worthwhile music coming out of 'Bollywood' these days. From playing keyboards in a band to making jingles, and now making highly popular songs, Amit Trivedi has done it all and is still at it and how! We recommend you start exploring his set at this season's Coke Studio with 'Chaudhary'!
NITIN SAWHNEY Born in England, this British Indian man has varied tastes in m u s i c f ro m J a z z to electronica. While growing he learnt the piano, table and guitar and then moved into composing and production. Till date, Sawhney has scored for numerous games, ads, movies and other projects. His set at Coke Studio promises to be something distinct.
KARSH KALE Karsh Kale is known name in the Industry, popular for his fusion oriented tracks. He has been around for too long and how we just wish we could have had him on the show last year itself. None the less, this Asian Underground genre bending Indian American composer and producer is all set to light the Coke Studio up in some unique sonic flares this time.
HITESH SONIK Coming from a family of composers, Hitesh took to composition after learning the guitar. He has worked with Vishal Bhardwaj on films like 'Ishqiya' and 'Kaminey'. Hitesh discovered his passion for arranging and slowly took to it full time. A lot of his tracks are bass driven and heavily guitar layered.
SHANTANU MOITRA Being a Bengali, music runs in his blood. Shantanu used to play in a school band and later went on to compose for ad jingles, but he rose to fame with his music for the blockbuster movie 'Parineeta'! A winner of Cannes Bronze Lion, Shantanu's music can simply be said to be coming from the heart carrying a lot of soul.
EHSAAN NOORANI Two-Thirds of the Shankaar-Ehsaan-Loy trio will be playing at Coke Studio this season and unless you were lost in the cold lands of Siberia for the past half a decade, chances are you have heard a song made by them. With a very melodically balanced outlook, these talented musicians have produced hits after hits.
LOY MENDOSA Coke Studio is a haven for Fusion lovers, and these producers are guaranteed to take it higher, sonically better levels. We can only wish Coke Studio and MTV all the best in this journey and hope for more shows like this and Sound Trippin! All images are fromcokestudioindia.com

THINKING MAN’S
MUSIC
TOOL is a band that produces music for music’s sake.
by Maaruthy Kumar There was a band all my friends use to talk about. Tool. I heard their name often but never got a chance to listen to them. Then one fine day I finally listened to. I still remember the first song I listened to – H. from their album Aenima. It was an epiphany. Tool belong to this genre of music called progressive metal. It is a variant of progressive rock or as it is popularly called prog rock. The origins of prog rock can be traced back to the 70s. Prog rock was essentially about pushing the boundaries of the t e c h n i c a l a n d compositional aspects of music. According to the Oxford Companion to Music, prog rock bands "...explored extended musical structures which involved intricate instrumental patterns and textures and often esoteric subject matter." It was an evolution from the psychedelic rock of

the 60s pioneered by bands such as Pink Floyd, Yes, Jethro Tull etc. This prog rock has been blended with several other genres of music such as heavy metal, jazz etc. Prog metal is when prog rock blends with heavy metal. Progressive metal was pioneered by bands such as Dream Theater, Tool in the 90s. Tool have always been considered to make music that was called 'Thinking man's metal' – a term coined by Patrick Donovan of The Age. He went on to add that Tool were – “Cerebral and visceral, soft and heavy, melodic and abrasive, tender and brutal, familiar and strange, western and eastern, beautiful and ugly, taut yet sprawling and epic, they are a tangle of contradictions.” There are several c h a ra c te r i s t i c s o f a Typical Tool song/album. around which they have built a name.
Unconventional time signatures Every song has a particular time signature. Time s i g n a t u re i s a i s a notational convention used in Western musical notation to specify how many beats (pulse of a m u s i c ) a re i n e a c h measure and which note value (duration of a note) constitutes one beat. Usually bands follow the conventional ones –the simple time signatures. They are usually denoted as 22, 24, 42, 44, 38 (the upper value denoting note value and the bottom value denoting number of beats in a bar.) To o l h o w e v e r have known to break these conventions and use odd time signatures 13 such as 16 for their song Schism from the album Lateralus. Experimentation Each band member experiments a lot with the nature of
instruments they use to record songs. The drummer Danny Carey apart from the normal drums indulges in a variety of other percussion instruments such as polyrhythms, electronic drum pads and has also known to use prerecorded tabla and octoban sounds. Unconventional Lyrics Lyrics are always a stand out in most tool songs. They are unconventional in content and in structure. The contents usually focus on topics ranging f ro m p h i l o s o p hy t o s p i r i t u a l i t y, f r o m organized religion to Jungian psychology. The album 10,000 days deals with slightly more personal issues. In fact the album and the title name is a reference to the twenty-seven years during which vocalist Keenan's mother su ffered from complications of a stroke.
MUSIC
To summarize, Tool are one band I have enjoyed listening to thoroughly. Every time I listen to them something new pops out and it seems so obvious I am struck by my inability to see it earlier. In a world in which music is drive alone by emotions and situations it is refreshing to see a band that produces music for music's sake.

MICHAEL PHELPS, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA With a lop-sided smile of satisfaction, the greatest swimmer of all time, said farewell with one last brilliant performance for the U.S. relay team. Final tally: 18 career golds, 22 medals. He had done everything he set out to achieve. “It's kind of something weird looking at this and seeing 'Greatest Olympian of All Time,' ” Phelps said, adding: “I finished my career the way I wanted to. I think that's pretty cool.” It sounds ludicrous now, but when Phelps, now 27, began his journey toward becoming the Tiger Woods of swimming, he had no idea what Mark Spitz had done— Phelps was looking to the future when he put together the most ambitious Olympic program in the history of his sport. “Some architects of history work from a blueprint, while champions like Michael Phelps, do not want to acknowledge any ceiling.” Phelps has transformed swimming, inspired a whole generation at home and abroad, by building an audacious program out of grit, guts and a burning desire to make swimming a game to enjoy for children all over the world. . The world of swimming has lost a titan of the pool.

SIR CHRIS HOY,
Hoy's victory in the keirin means he exits Olympic sport as Britain's most successful medalist, with six golds, surpassing Sir Steve Redgrave, although the cycling Godfather has "only" four golds to his name. This leaves GB's track cycling team with seven gold medals, one silver and one bronze from the 10 track events, a picture of all-round domination.
GREAT BRITAIN
USAIN BOLT, JAMAICA When Yohan Blake beat him twice it opened his eyes. Bolt was stunned with his defeat but with firm determination in mind he was on the field to show the world that he is a legend. Bolt started preparing for the London Olympics to repeat what he did in Beijing four years back. He did that in style retained 100 and 200 meter titles and by retaining his 100 meter title he became only second player after Carl Lewis to win back to back short dash gold medals in 116 year history of the
modern games. And now it is a simple fact bolt has remained fastest man on the planet. Bolt was slightly worried about his start, so he sat in the blocks a bit, but he executed and that was t h e k e y. H i s c o a c h s a i d ,' s t o p w o r r y i n g about your start. Your best race is at the end. After this famous win he declared himself as a legend some may see his gesture as sign of arrogance but it is true that he has silenced all his doubters.

FOOD The Maximum City (Mumbai) of India is one of the most splendid places in the world for a variety of reasons. The two most prominent things that come to mind when you think of Mumbai are Bollywood and the Yummy-licious street food. The mindboggling diversity of food and the abundance of gastronomic adventures make it a veritable food lovers' paradise. The images that comes floating to you are of steaming hot and butter soaked Pav laid out with an invitingly aromatic Bhaji or a street hawker selling Pani Puris / golgappas with a potato fills, green chili and mint paste and many such
culinary delights. The Mumbai food legend has it that the origin of this street meal, was by the mill workers as a midnight snack. They assembled it with leftover vegetables mashed up together, with spices and lime juice and served with couple of pavs. The essence of Mumbai is exemplified in its street food and if you have ever wondered what keeps Mumbai going, the answer is right before you in its streets and by-lanes. The people of Mumbai and the indomitable Mumbaikar spirit are what breathe life into the myriad miracles that together comprise Mumbai. The
streets of Mumbai are filled with people young and old alike enjoying the multitude of flavors that it offers. The impact of street food is not only on Mumbaikars but also Bollywood. The damsels are shown relishing Pani Puris with their lovers, this eccentrically takes their romance to new levels. Our macho man Sanjay Dutt shown as Pav Bhaji seller in the movie Vaastav, is just another interesting food and Bollywood union that goes so effortlessly with Mumbai. Mumbai is a vibrant and lively city that has vague barriers and boundaries. It's no surprise that Mumbai is
associated with street food that can be enjoyed at any time of the day. From succulent kebabs to Pav Bhajis to Bhel Puris and the iconic Vada Pavs, Mumbai has India on a platter. Not only have the Mumbaikars made innovative outliers like the Vada Pav popular but also made them viable enough to compete with the likes of McDonalds and KFC. Taking a pick at your favourite food is no easier than picking a favorite song or a movie. I have introduced three of the most unavoidable recipes which also happen to top my food chart.

It feels good that my hard work and patience has finally paid. Was it difficult to get into the skin of Faizal Khan's character or was it fairly easy? I prefer method acting, so I make it a point to make my all roles conspicuously different f r o m o n e a n o t h e r. Because I had to understand the character of Faizal Khan directly, I went to Wasseypur and stayed there for 15 days. After that Anuraag Kashyap (the director of GOW) held a seminar in Mumbai. These things, and a few others help me in my method acting.
that you have hardly done a ny r e g u l a r B ' w o o d masala flicks, why is that? Is it because you stay away from this type of cinema? Yaar masala toh mujhe bhi pasand hai. But that masala should have a meaning. It should not be meaningless like typical Bollywood films. Even Gangs of Wasseypur had masala in it. If I'm required to do a song-dance sequence if the story demands, I'd surely do it. Par aise nahi ki ekdum se gaana shuru ho gaya, ekdum se dance shuru ho gaya.
This year your 3 films, PST, Kahaani and GOW saga, have pushed you into the limelight and made you a media darling. How are you dealing with all the sudden attention? I answer media questions and others honestly and directly. I try to manage all the media and other things before and after my shooting. While I'm shooting, though, I concentrate fully on it because my methods require a lot of concentration.
You made your debut in 1999, and you had to wait for more than a decade to become a household name. How did you deal with the feeling of doing good work yet not getting the apt recognition? Now that I have got that kind of popularity it does feel good but yes, it did take quite some time. Der aaye durust aaye wala hisaab hai. I thank God for this recognition. Finally my hard work and my patience paid.
If one looks at your filmography, one finds
How tough is it for an actor to sustain himself,
when he takes the decision of doing sensible cinema? It is tough. But for me, it is very important that the film should be good, the script should be good. Majority of the Bolly wood flicks are typical hero heroine villain stuff. Lekin agar main bhi wahi karne lagunga, toh phir woh toh sab kar hi rahe hain, phir main woh kyun karoon?
Will you walk the Hollywood path like Irrfan Khan? Yes, definitely, but only if I get a central, lead role in the movie. Not for cameos. Having said that, I'd equally love to continue working in our own Indian films, because the quality cinema being made here is at par with any film of Hollywood. Apart from Anurag Kashyap, which directors do you like/ would you like working with? The new, young filmmakers who have a different mindset and a different approach to filmmaking than the typical Bollywood hero heroine villain flicks, I'd like to work with all of
them. No fixed names or banners.
Prior to Kahaani, and GOW, you have essayed smaller yet meaningful roles. Are you going to focus on meatier and lead roles or would you still be happy in playing character roles? C u r r e n t l y, I ' m concentrating on lead roles and central characters only.
What are your views on the changing landscape of Indian cinema? Should we have more realistic cinema? We s h o u l d definitely have such films. India is a vast country, it has so many topics and issues to make films on. Hum Mumbai mein baithe rehte hain, hume pata bhi nahi hota ki humare desh mein kya ho raha hai. We should have many more films on the social issues. Upcoming films? There are about 10 of them. The first one is Talaash with Aamir Khan. Then there are Dekh Indian Circus, Liar Dice, Chittagong, Haramkhor, Miss Lovely and a few others.

THE SULTAN OF
R U P Y E S S A W
Pankaj Tripathi has done some notable roles in movies like Omkara, Aakrosh, Agneepath, Raavan and Apharan. He recently vowed us with his performance as Sultan, in Gangs of Wasseypur. Here are excerpts from a freewheeling interview with Akshay Singh. The character of Sultan Qureshi is one of many layers and is driven by revenge. How difficult was it to shoot for it? Sultan was a stereotypical negative character. Most of the actors would interpret him as a single layered persona. It was a challenge for me to bring out the va r i o u s fo l d s i n h i s character. When you think of Sultan Qureshi, the first thing that comes to the mind is aggression, given he is a butcher. It would have been very risky if I would have just shown his 32 YY AUGUST 2012
brutality, it would not have left an impression on the audience. Therefore I decided to add layers to his character, and be brutal only where it was required. For example, when the police inspector comes to his slaughter house, Sultan was jovial, calm and composed as it was his den. When he goes to kill Sardar Khan's family in the opening scene there is an element of pain on his face. When he goes to Ramadhir Singh, he is shy, quiet and timid; which even prompts Ramadhir
Singh into asking that whether he is fit for the job. Even when he threatens his sister to decline the nikaah, else he would shoot her, he kisses her forehead. These are traits which make him human and realistic. People remember such characters for a longer time. It was upon me to make the character multidimensional so that it does not fades to black. Most of the roles you have done have been in shades of grey. Any specific reason?
The roles offered to me are not even grey! They are completely in the negative. But since I believe that none in the world is an absolute good or bad, I more often than not cajole my director and add shades of grey to the character. One of the reasons can be that the makers are not aware of my range and talent. How do you choose your roles, is it script based or your focus is more on the character? I'll make an honest confession. Prior to GOW, I

didn't have the capacity and authority to go through the script. I had just the liberty of going through the character and decide because I couldn't leave a film. There were quite a few films which didn't appeal to me but I had to do them. After GOW, the situation is showing signs of improvement. Which are your upcoming films? There is Neeraj Pandey's Bhaiyaji Superhit, Dabanngg 2 and an untitled venture under Priyadarshan. Despite being from NSD, you had to struggle quite a bit. Do you want to say something about it? The training of NSD does not help one in bagging a role in the industry. May be after you bag the role, it can help you a bit during the industry. Any person who has come into the industry has struggled, and same has been the case with me. I have also had my fair share of struggles but it is not that I have some tragic tales of it. I was mentally prepared for a lot worse and I am thankful that it
didn't go down to that level. Many of the films have zero storyline, but with the help of marketing blitzkrieg, they do good business whereas really good and meaningful cinema suffers. What's your take on it? Cinema is basically an industry in India, it is a business. It is imperative that a person who invests Re 2 gets a return of Re 4. I am not at all against commercial cinema. But having said that it does pain me to see films with no storyline, zero performances, just thriving on masala. I want our Hindi films should do business of 500-600 crores like Titanic and Avengers, and for that you have to pay attention to the content and craft of cinema. It is naïve to think that just by putting masala into a film would make it gross 100 crores. Another aspect of meaningful cinema is that, it can be used to give the western cinema, a run for its money. For ex: GOW is being released in French in theatres where until now a single Bollywood film has
”
not been screened before. It is purely being screened for foreigners and not primarily for NRI junta. To sum up, I am not against commercial cinema but if the balance and the content improves it would be beneficial for all of us. Do you think that the type of films that Anurag, Tigmanshu and Dibakar make, are they at par with Hollywood? Content wise, definitely. They are the masters of their craft and always come out with content strong movies. Would you like to work in Hollywood if you get a chance? I would definitely want to go and work there. Incidentally there is a short film of 20 minutes produced by a Hollywood production house. Prior to that I was finalised by a film for Lucy Lui, but in the film I was required to rape girls of 6-7 years of age. I was not convinced by it and therefore let it go. Script powered movies are slowly becoming commercially viable, do you think it would soon
see mainstream actors in this genre? I am very positive of the fact that you would soon see the big names of the industry in meaningful cinema. The recent success of films like Kahaani, Vicky Donor and GOW is a good indication that films like these would be made and sold.
Out of the roles that you have done is there any particular role which is close to your heart? I try to add my signature style in every role I do. The role of Surya was a hackneyed character, but I somehow managed to add my touch to it. Dharam of Aakrosh is a role I really enjoyed playing, Priyan Sir, gave me a free hand. It was a joy to work with him, infact I am the main villain of his next venture.
On a concluding note, any g u r u m a n t ra f o r t h e upcoming talents. They should be completely prepared for any eventuality and be prepared in all aspects. P hy s i c a l l y, m e n t a l l y, emotionally.

ANURAG KASHYAP LANDMARK FILMS: B L A C K F R I D AY, GULAAL, DEV D, GANGS OF WASSEYPUR UPCOMING FILMS: UGLY, BOMBAY VELVET Born in a sleepy, little town of Gorakhpur in UP; Anurag Kashyap has come a long way. During his graduation period in Delhi University, Anurag got interested in films. He was particularly influenced by Italian director Vittorio de Sica, and his move The Bicycle thieves have left a very strong impression on him. Kashyap made his directorial debut with Paanch, which is still unreleased, and has Kay Kay Menon in the lead. Anurag is seen as a very open director, whose script is open to changes and modifications even on the set. He does not behave like the captain of the ship. His exposure to world cinema is a very essential factor in his
success. Apart from that Anurag has the experiences of life in small towns as he has l ive d i n G o ra k h p u r, Varanasi, Gwalior etc. the actors who have worked under him say that his realism has a very unique touch. Pankaj Tripathi, who played Sultan in GOW shares an incident: “The sequence where Sultan goes to Ramadhir Singh's house, Ramadhir's wife can be heard whispering in the background that since Sultan is a Muslim he should be served in different plates. This was improvised on the sets, and is a glaring testimony of Anurag's experience and understanding of the subject.” Apart from being an accomplished director Anurag Kashyap is also an esteemed script and a dialogue writer who has given Bollywood scripts like Satya, Lootera (2012), Guru (dialogue), Shool (dialogue) etc.
TIGMANSHU DHULIA LANDMARK FILMS: HAASIL, PAAN SINGH TOMAR UPCOMING FILMS: BEGUM SAMRU, BULLET RAJA, MILAN TALKIES, VALMIKI KI BANDOOK, SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER RETURNS Tigmanshu Dhulia was born in Allahabad in UP and is an alumnus of the Allahabad University. He began his journey into
films as a casting director. He was the casting the director of Dil se, The warrior and The Bandit Queen. His directorial debut was Haasil, a movie which has gained cult status. Tigmanshu for the major part of his filmography has dabbled in stories which have human conflict as their base. He is also showing an i n c l i n a t i o n t o wa rd s
directing period films after successfully directing Saahib Biwi aur Gangster and Paan Singh Tomar. DIBAKAR BANERJEE LANDMARK FILMS: KHOSLA KA GHOSLA, OYE LUCKY LUCKY OYE, LSD, SHANGHAI Dibakar Banerjee is one of the few directors riding the new wave, who have hit the bull's eye, every time he has fired a shot. Dibakar was born and brought up in Delhi and was interning with an audio-visual filmmaker Sam Matthews before plunging into direction.
Dibakar Banerjee revels in exploring the human emotion and conflict. He has a unique way of presenting reality, he blurs it with fiction. His first film was a sweetcomedy exploring the human emotions of greed, his second was about a larger than life thief with grey notions, his third was a gut wrenching cocktail of stories which had the desired effect and his last
was perhaps his most mature and best work till date. Shanghai painted a sad picture of the Indian political scene and the hunger for power. Dibakar Banerjee works as a mixer, he picks up elements, all recognizable and known to us, he then churns t h e m u p , g iv i n g u s something alien but fiercely impressive.
SHOOJIT SIRCAR LANDMARK FILM: VICKY DONOR UPCOMING FILM: JAFFNA Shoojit Sircar made his directorial debut with Yahaan in 2005. The filmed did poorly at the box office but the directorial talent was well appreciated by the critics as well as the audience. Shoojit Sircar won the Indian
Competition Special Jury Award at Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema in 2005 for Yahaan. Shoojit Sircar surprised one and all with sleeper hit of the year in Vicky Donor. No one expected the film to be such a rousing hit, given the touchy subject with which it was flirting. But Shoojit created a
perfectly balanced comic yet didactic film. He is set to return to his genre of human conflict with Jaffna which is based on the LTTE movement in Sri Lanka with John Abraham as the lead. The most impressive feature about Sircar's direction is that he seems to bring out on screen very complex situations with ĂŠlan.
SUDHIR MISHRA LANDMARK FILMS: DHARAVI, CHAMELI, HAZARON KHWAISHEN AISI UPCOMING FILMS: INKAAR, MUMBAI CUTTING, AUR DEVDAS, DHRUV Sudhir Mishra does not need any introduction. He is a veteran in making

while his last movie Yeh Saali Zindagi was a commercial as well asja a critical hit. He has cast s o m e ve r y t a l e n te d actors like Shiney Ahuja. Chitrangada Singh, Irrfan Khan in his films. His one of the upcoming films has Farhan Akhtar in a role of a politician.

Fa rh a n Akhtar is well on his way towards becoming one. His place on this list can be highly debated, and as some may argue against him by saying that he has only made commercial
cinema. It is true that Fa rh a n A k h t a r h a s directed huge commercial success like the Don series but he has also directed something as spectacular as Dil Chahta Hai; a movie which enjoys cult status now. Farhan's Lakshya was also a departure from the usual song and dance fare of Bollywood, and a mature look at a

VISHAL BHARDWAJ LANDMARK FILMS: MAKDEE, MAQBOOL, OMKAARA, KAMINEY, 7 KHOON MAAF UPCOMING FILM: MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA Vishal Bhardwaj was born in Meerut in UP and is an alumnus of Delhi University. It was here that he nurtured his talents and took the nascent steps towards
being Vishal Bhardwaj. Vishal Bhardwaj is the undisputed king of adaptations. Two of his greatest movies have been adapted from Macbeth and Othello. Vishal Bhardwaj also has a penchant for making children films; he made his debut with Makdee, a children film. He again directed a children film T h e B l u e U m b re l l a ,
which is adapted from Ruskin Bond's story of the same name. Alike Sudheer Mishra, Bhardwaj is adept at handling and bringing to the fore the complexities of the human emotions and conflict. Recent examples of his genius in this genre can be of Kaminey and 7 Khoon Maaf. Apart from being the
director that only he can be; Vishal is also a gifted musician and has sung, composed and directed many songs.
ZOYA AKHTAR LANDMARK FILM: ZINDAGI NA MILEGI DOBARA UPCOMING FILM: KISMET TALKIES Zoya Akthar made her directorial debut with Luck by Chance. She w ro t e a n d d i re c t e d Zindagi Na Milegi Dobaara and moved away from the shadows of her illustrious lineage to carve an identity of her own. She learned the ropes of film making as an assistant director in Lakshya and Dil Chahta Hai. She was also the casting director for Mira Nair's Kama Sutra.
Though she is only two films old she has done some really impressive stuff. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is a cult film, which was critically acclaimed and commercially highly successful. Apart from being a very promising director that would surely be counted as a legend by the time she hangs her boots, she is also a writer having penned down her debut and also Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara. She has also penned downed Aamir Khan's next.

GANGS OF WASSEYPUR:
THE PHENOMENON by Akshay Singh Some movies hypnotise you. They take you in a world of their own, while you lose track of everything that is around you. Anurag Kashyap's Gang of Wasseypur saga belongs to this elite group. GOW part 1 and part 2, both releasing in a span of less than 2 months, have given birth to a new p h e n o m e n o n , wh i c h deserves some attention. Anurag Kashyap may be one of the best directors India has ever had, quite rightly bestowed with the title of Indian Tarantino. GOW saga is a testimony of his genius and of his range as a director. GOW saga is an age old story of a son seeking the revenge of his father's death. They say a brilliant storyteller can transform a simple story into something so magnificent, that despite k n o w i n g t h e culmination, you indulge in it. After watching each part of GOW you can't pinpoint, which chords, which emotions has the movie touched, but you surely are overwhelmed by it. The movie takes time to sink in, it takes time for you to realise that you have been just through a cinematic
experience of over 5 hours. There are so many things that stand out in this epic tale. Screenplay, c i n e m a t o g r a p h y, characters, music, dialogues to name a few. There is a sense of congruity in the way, the narration flows on the screen. Everything appears to be a choreographed artwork, realistic and believable. If one is aware of the history and dynamics of Bihar, he would see no exaggeration in the way things have been portrayed. The coalfields of Dhanbad serve no more than a canvas on which larger pictures are painted; a family feud, a war for complete supremacy, a cocktail of subjective moralities. The characters of the saga are the knight in shining armours of the film. It has surely helped that nearly the whole of the cast has roots in UP & Bihar, thus making it very easy for them to slip in the skin of the characters. Manoj Bajpai as Sardar Khan is one of the highlights of the saga. He essays the role of a patriarch to perfection. In fact he dons many hats d ex t ro u s ly ; v i s i t s a
whorehouse, sings lullabies to his kids, rips apart a rival, leches at women; all with silken smoothness. The narrator and one of the important characters, Piyush Mishra, is one of the most under-rated actors of our industry. W h e t h e r h i s performance as Dhukhi Bana's elder brother in Gulaal or as Nasir Ahmed in GOW, he has delivered every single time. His voice modulations, his inquisitive eyes and deliberate underplay of the character deserve a shout out. Faisal Khan played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui is yet another win. Nawaz is a brilliant actor, and his recent films like Peepli Live, Pan Singh Tomar, Kahaani and now GOW has proved this. He begins as the youngest son of Sardar Khan of who not much is expected and goes on to be the mainstay of the second part. Tigmanshu Dhulia as Ramadhir Singh is another natural in front of the camera; in fact he is a joy to watch, though it's his first film. His sequences with his son and the scene of slapping Ehsan Qureshi are very realistic.
The music of Gangs of Wasseypur deserves a special mention and Sneha Khanwalkar an ovation. Never before in mainstream cinema such diverse sounds have been captured and put to lyrics. Sneha Khanwalkar has given us something which grows on us and lingers on us for a long time. She travelled to Benaras, Trinidad, and through the interiors of Bihar to give us sounds and music like O Wo m a n iya , J iya Tu , Manmauji, Keh ke lunga. GOW has not crossed the 'coveted' 100 crore mark yet and one of the reasons for it is that it has been misinterpreted by many. People think of it as a blood, gore and a cuss word movie. The reality is starkly different. Cuss words have been used only where they are required, and they don't look out of the place. The film has blood and gore but they are not repulsive.
To sum up GOW in its very own style: GOW ne hamaari permission leke hamari keh ke audience ki li hai aur audience ne khushi khusi di hai.

MOVIES FAN REACTION:
THE DARK KNIGHT RISES
by Akshay Singh When I walked out of the theatre, after having watched the first day first show of TDKR, I was well and truly under an influence. I did not have a clue where the road was taking me, I just ambled along. I had just seen Christopher Nolan at his entertaining best. The first half of TDKR is unlike Nolan. Heck! It's very unlike Batman. Nolan takes 30 minutes to build up the plot, whets the appetite of the audience, makes them wait tantalizingly for Bale to don his suit and then just lets loose his sheer undiluted genius upon you. The screenplay grabs you by your throat and dare you to not even bat an eyelid. This was supposed to be the culmination of an epic. This was supposed to be the curtains for a franchise which has the same importance for today's generation as Godfather has for earlier generations. This was supposed to be the end of an era. And for all this to fall into place with clockwork precision, the subjects needed to play their part. And indeed they did! Batman and Bane are study in contrasts. Batman has lost his purpose to go back to guard the streets of Gotham. He still can't recover from the loss of

his love eight years back. Gotham does not need him now, because for eight years it has been calm or was it the calm before the storm? A storm called Bane. Bane was born in darkness, moulded by it. He is physically, what Batman used to be. He speaks in a muddy drawl that reminds one of a certain Marlin Brando. He manhandles Bale like none, he almost decimates him, makes him a cripple; almost. Selina Kyle, the stingy, bitchy cat burglar is a surprise. You did not expect Anna Hathaway to pull of such a role with so much élan. Apart from fanning the embers of
Bale's love for her, she also kicks people in the crotch, fires bullets, drives the Batpod, The Bat and delivers some really well written lines. Her outfit, her high heeled boots and her smacking red lips also make a statement. Alfed brings an emotional quotient in a movie which uses strong doses of adrenaline. He graduates to be the father figure to Bale, and his emotional confrontation w i t h M a s te r Way n e makes you a bit misty e y e d : “ Yo u a r e a s precious to me as you were to your own mother and father. I swore to them that I would protect you, and I haven't”.
The second half of the movie throws multiple surprises at you, and leaves you gasping for breath. It is a cinematic experience difficult to capture in words: watching Bale rebuild himself, exorcizing his inner demons, changing his definition about fear and death. It was difficult to control yourself from chanting: “Deh-Shay, Deh-Shay, Bah Sah Rah. Bah Sah Rah” when Bale attempts his escape, and you can't help but clap when he RISES successfully, without a rope, to emerge out with the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur in the background. The hair on

Director Christopher Nolan your body stand on their end when Batman in his final confrontation with Bale tells him in his growling voice: And then you will have my permission to die. You can't help but fight a lump in your throat when Jim Gordon delivers his eulogy at Batman's grave. As you prepare reluctantly to embrace the end, you just can't come to terms with the fact that your favourite superhero has died. And then the God a m o n g s t m e n ; Christopher Nolan; sniggers at the audience, finding it difficult to believe how easily we played into his hands. He then unleashes the climax, and the whole
theatre breaks into a c o l l e c t ive d e l i r i u m . Diwali came early for the Nolanholics, the theatre reverberated with cheers and claps. The subtle symbolism of the last scene is something which would be my finest memory of TDKR. Critics may have lashed out at Nolan for making a super hero movie which is entertaining but he does n o t eve n t r y to d o something like The Dark Knight. They have compared Bane and Joker, and declared Joker the victor. Well with all due respect, these critics are blithering fools. Joker is a once in lifetime role, a talented actor laid down his life

for it. Dark Knight is a film in a league of its own, even Christopher can't out do it and he knows it so he does not even try to do it. I would like to give a special mention to the Dark Knight, a certain Christian Bale. In all three of his movies, there was always someone who stole away the
sheen; Liam Neeson in the first, Heth Ledger in the second and Tom Hardy in the last. People didn't get surprised with his acting or consistency, maybe because they expected it from him; the hallmark of a true genius. Every Hero Has a Journey. Every Journey Has an End and it was an EPIC CONCLUSION.

Indian vineyards started their careers by sticking to predominantly four French varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc and Chenin Blanc. LET'S GO VINTAGE FRIENDLY! With a lot of our celebrities accepting and celebrating the metamorphosized Retro Look! It's time we help you indulge into some basic Fashion Retro tipsMen have a way with the retro through the cardigans and the fitted grey suits. The 50's were the age when the pants were cigarette shaped and coats became sack tailored. Ditch the length of the hair. Groom your hair in the post-military style by offering them short haircut and the gel. Any evening gathering or a date could easily be transmuted with the frills, A- lines; the sacks and the waist lift shift dresses. It wouldn't be wrong to say that we have long suffered and brow beaten into carrying the similar skinny short dresses. It's high time we renewed and reconstructed our own fashion themes. Volumise! Volumise! Volumise. Any effort to recreate the Audrey Hepburn or Marylin Monroe look would go in vain if you haven't perfected the art of volumising your lock. Curls are also a vehement revival of the times. The key to a perfect 50's hairdo is also a half attempted Beehive. You could also let loose some locks flow along your face's length. If you are planning to walk out under the sun, the cat eye glasses are a must have! They are not only sexy but also suggest a differentiated class and style. Hillary Duff is the girl to take it from. Go lusciously Red with the gloss. A strong emblem for sexuality and power, red Lips hold men like no other. However you must understand that Red is a shaky territory. If you plan to plunge into it, Make sure you contrast it with the right prints, plains or accessories. The verdict is out and embracing the past with a renewed poise and class is the new mantra! So get set rolling and CRY R-E-T-R-O people!
