She was interested in starting a leadership program based on guidelines set by the National Association for Community Leadership. When Joe Catrambone came to the Chamber

and approximately 30 are selected. Sailer said that 30 were chosen because it is a number that is easily manageable when touring facilities and small enough to enable participants to get to know each other. Those in the program have “homework” that gives them more insight into the workings of various institutions and organizations. “In education, they may shadow a student or teacher and share that experience,” Sailer said. “In criminal justice, they may ride with a deputy or police officer. One said, ‘I never knew how many hats they wore.’ They visit the jail, and see a simulated trial.” One of the results of the first class of participants was the St. Lucie River Initiative Clean-Up. Another class was responsible for the formation of the Educational Foundation and still another initiated the Martin Youth Leadership Program, a mini-version of the adult program. “It’s been going on for 16 years,” Sailer said. “It’s one day a month and it’s run by alumni of the LEADERship program.”

PALM CITY – Nancy and Jack Sailer moved to Stuart in 1966. Jack worked for Holiday Inn in Hot Springs, Ark., and the company asked him if he wanted to go to Stuart, Fla., to open a Holiday Inn on U.S. 1. “We didn’t know where Stuart was, but it sounded pretty,” Nancy Sailer said. “I’m a beautification gal. When you went across the Roosevelt Bridge, there were medians with masses of flowers. Ocean Boulevard had hanging bushels on the light posts and there was all the water, so beautiful and clear. Things weren’t developed and there was a rickety bridge to Palm City.” The Sailers moved to Palm City in 1972, although friends questioned that decision. “They said, ‘’Why would you want to move to Palm City? There’s nothing there.’ We wanted to live on the wide river. The developments weren’t there. Our house had been owned by an older couple. It was on ¾ of an acre, had boat ramps and orchards. It cost $55,000.” Soon, other people began moving in.

in 1989, he was familiar with the program and gave it the green light. Sailer was named program director. That first year, decision-makers from a variety of professions formed a planning committee for what would become LEADERship Martin County. A program lasting nine months was set up, with meetings once a month. During the day sessions, participants were exposed to the area’s history and culture, as well as meeting leaders in education, health care, criminal justice and education. “They would meet decision-makers.” Sailer said. “When they graduated in nine months, they could go out and serve on boards. Sixteen people who are alumni of the program ran for office this past election.” The program has graduated 637 people in its 23 years. They are drawn from businesses, non-profit organizations and civic groups. Among the alumni are well-known public officials including state Rep. Gayle Harrell, state Sen. Joe Negron and Martin County Clerk of Courts, Marsha Ewing. Applicants apply for the class

SAILER from page 3 The youth program is for high school sophomores and juniors. Programs modeled after the adult plan help students develop and enhance leadership skills. Sailer retired from her full-time job years ago, but she still works part-time as program director for the LEADERship Martin County. “I’m called the program director, but it’s the planning committee that coordinates the days,” she said. “I’ve gotten the name ‘Mom.’ I’m there to guide them and scold them. We tweak the program every year as things change. As people go through the

program, they want to give back. The planning committee members are all alumni.” Alumni formed an association almost immediately and they are responsible for much of the program’s efforts. “They are all volunteers,” Sailer said. “I’m really proud that they are an all-volunteer organization. They hold fundraisers and give an $8,000 scholarship to a Martin Youth LEADERship alumnus.” Sailer has found her job as program director a bit easier since her husband Jack retired and became her computer guru. “He’s Mr. Fix-it,” she said. “He does my PowerPoint and graph-

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com ics for the monthly alumni newsletter. He’s been my right hand. He has supported me in everything and I couldn’t do all the things I do if it weren’t for him.” The Sailers have three children, six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. As if family and a job she loves weren’t enough to make her thankful, there’s one more thing. “I work out of my home,” she said. “How lucky am I?” For information about LEADERship Martin County, visit the website www.stuartmartinchamber.org/leadership or call (772) 287-1088.

Group formed to battle human trafficking Palm City activist is fighting against a crime that many remain unaware of By Patrick Bernadeau Staff writer PALM CITY — Palm City’s Noel Thomas, 26, first took notice of human trafficking in 2007 while in overseas with his band, Anchor of Hope. “I was over in Europe on tour with my band and I received a pamphlet on human trafficking,” Thomas said. “I couldn’t believe that modern day slavery existed or that there are 27 million people in slavery in the world.” “I was just shocked, so I started to learn more and more about the issue.” After his band started committing much of their music as a platform to fight against the issue, Thomas reached a turning point in the battle in 2009. Thomas and a team of others had the opportunity to go to India and see kids actually being sold in the brothels. “This was my first experience, seeing it firsthand,” Thomas said. “I had been prepared for it, seen all the movies and read the books but when I saw it, I was completely blown away.” “Nothing can ever prepare you for seeing a 13-year-old girl behind these iron bars being sold as a sex slave.” Shortly after the visit to India, Thomas’ Redeem the Shadows organization was

launched in April 2010. “Our focus is to prevent students from being exploited or being trafficked,” Thomas said. “Our goal is to work with students similar to the D.A.R.E. program, training them how to have healthy relationships, identify if they are being exploited in any way and giving them the resources to begin to share with their teachers anonymously if theyhear or know of an incident.” Thomas used his business degree from Florida Atlantic University as well as the networks made from touring to create an organization seeking to end human trafficking. Implementing strategies, addressing awareness, prevention, rescue and rehabilitation, the organization has transitioned its focus from internationally when it started to domestically. “Because we saw it in India, we thought we would be able to raise awareness with the problem in India,” Thomas said. “But as we learned more about domestic trafficking, we realized that we have a serious problem of human trafficking right in our backyard in Martin County.” Thomas estimates that there are 200,000 American children in human trafficking, domestically. Florida ranks third as the most prevalent state in the U.S. where this crime is committed. Redeem the Shadows also hopes to take this issue to hotels, convention centers and

TRAFFICKING from page 5 eventually to the state capital. “We want to also work with hotels and convention centers that are not only around sporting events, but around the area as well, to make them go there a certification process where the managers and staff know how to identify victims,” said Thomas. “At the end of this certification process, they will receive a seal that they can place at the outside of their business that lets people know that this is an exploitation-free zone.” “Our big hope is to have it been successful here and go to Tallahassee to lobby that the state adopts that the certification process for all hotels and makes it as mandatory as sexual harassment training.” Thomas also states that before being shut down, the adult section of craigslist.org was one of the main sources where a trafficking transition can take place. The classified website, backpage.com, has currently taken craigslist’s place. The average age of kids involved is 13 years old, but the age of the child can be much younger. “You see them as young as 5 years old, so really there are no limits,” Thomas said. “But you see it a lot in the 12- to 14-year-old range.” “These are kids that are kidnapped or are runaways, sometimes promised a modeling job, that are forced into trafficking.” Through the journey on road, traveling and spreading the message at festivals and churches, it’s been on tours to college campuses that the word has resonated. “What was cool was to see students and other young people get excited about this,” Thomas said. “I felt like we were setting a small blaze of passion to fight this.” “It was cool to see people come up to me and tell us ‘You’ve really inspired me.’” For additional information on Noel Thomas’ fight against human trafficking, visit www.redeemtheshadows.com.

Should you prepare for ‘fiscal cliff?’

A

s an investor, you can sometimes feel you’re at the mercy of forces beyond your control. This may be especially true today, when the entire country appears to be on edge about the approaching “fiscal cliff.” What can you do in the face of such a dire prediction? First of all, you’ll need to understand what initially led

the Federal Reserve to issue the fiscal cliff warning. Here’s the story: Some $1.2 trillion in spending cuts are scheduled to begin in 2013, while, simultaneously, the Bush-era tax cuts — including the reduction in capital gains and dividend taxes — are set to expire. This combination of spending cuts and higher taxes could take some $600 billion out of the economy, leading to a possible recession — and maybe something much worse, at least in the eyes of the Fed. Still, there’s no need for panic. Despite its political infighting, Congress is likely to reduce the “cliff” to a smaller bump. But as an investor, you may need to be prepared for two significant events: market volatility, at least in the short term, and higher taxes, probably for the foreseeable future. To combat market volatility, you may want to take these steps: • Rebalance — You may need to rebalance your portfolio to

ensure it still reflects your target mix of investments, based on your longterm goals and your risk tolerance. • Diversify — A broadly Jamie Chapogas diverFinancial advisor sified portfolio can help you navigate “bumps,” “cliffs” and other rugged investment terrain. (Keep in mind, though, that while diversification can reduce the impact of market volatility, it can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.) • Upgrade investment quality — Generally speaking, higher-quality investments are better positioned to withstand the tempests of volatile financial markets.

Consequently, when investing in stocks, look for companies with solid track records, strong management and competitive products. And when purchasing bonds, seek those that earn the highest grades from the independent rating agencies. Now, let’s turn to taxes. Even if taxes on income, capital gains and dividends do rise, they will still, in all likelihood, be much lower than they’ve been at various points in the past. Nonetheless, you may want to consider a variety of steps, including the following: • Take advantage of tax deferred vehicles. Contribute as much as possible to your traditional IRA, your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan, and any education savings accounts you may have, such as a 529 plan. • Convert your traditional IRA to a Roth IRA. A Roth IRA provides tax-free earnings, provided you

GOLD from page 1 Teaming up with local businesses such as Big Apple Pizza, Stuart Bowl, Tropical Smoothie and YMCA Sports World, the card will provide discounts to students at participating businesses. The Gold Card is usually released to the kids during Red Ribbon Week in late October, but after of the damage caused by Tropical Storm Sandy in August to the Tykes & Teens office, production of the cards was pushed back. Despite the delay, the message of prevention sent by the locals involved is strong. Project Northland is a substance abuse prevention program in four of the five middle schools in Martin County. The Gold Card serves as a tool to persuade students into alternative activities while avoiding harmful practices that children generally face that age, such as drugs and alcohol usage. Sponsors of the Gold Card include Tykes & Teens, The Children’s Services Council of Martin County and A Law Firm of Goldstein, Schmitt & Wade, P.L. The law firm covers the expenses behind the discounts. “Our firm sponsors the D.A.R.E. program in Martin County at the elementary school level,” attorney and Palm City resident Lauri Goldstein said. “Through this,

keying in on alcohol abuse. “There are a lot of people that underage drinking is a rite of passage,” Flieri said. “The Gold Card is a way for us to engage the community and businesses with our mission of changing the social norms about underage drinking and drug use.” “We ask local businesses where kids frequent to offer a discount to kids as a way to say there is

an alternative to kids. You don’t have to get a six-pack, hang out at the beach and get yourself in trouble. You can actually get a discount for a slice of pizza or play putt-putt golf instead.” For additional information on the Project Northland Gold Card, including a full list of participating businesses, visit the Tykes & Teens website at www.tykesandteens.org.

Recipes Shared by Celebrities and Friends.” “Dianne and her family are good friends of mine,” Griese said. “These are nice people and this is a nice shop.” The cookbook, written by Bob and his wife, Shay Griese, gathers recipes from celebrities in the sports and entertainment world. Published in April, proceeds of the cookbook go to the Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, the third-largest cancer center for inpatient volume in the United States. H. Lee Moffitt, the founder of the Moffitt Cancer, is Dianne Devant’s husband. “The philanthropic support for the cancer center has just been outstanding,” H. Lee Moffitt said. “Our goal is to help elevate the level of cancer care in Florida, hopefully find cures and the Grieses are helping with this fight.” Griese, the color commentator of Dolphins radio broadcasts, lost his first wife, Judi, to breast cancer in 1988. “There isn’t anybody that hasn’t, in some way, shape or form, that hasn’t been impacted by cancer,” Griese said. “Whether you are male or female, black or white, or regardless of your religion, it doesn’t make a difference.”

“Griese Spoon Cookbook: A Collection of Favorite Recipes Shared by Celebrities and Friends” is sold for $23.99 and can be found on Amazon, at Barnes & Noble and bookstores everywhere. “We just want to help and all the proceeds of this book will go to finding a cure at the Moffitt Cancer Center.” In addition to receiving his cookbook, fans and guests greeted and chatted with Griese throughout the evening, asking plenty of football questions of Dolphins past and present. “Griese Spoon Cookbook: A Collection of Favorite Recipes Shared by Celebrities and Friends” is sold for $23.99 and can be found on Amazon, at Barnes & Noble and bookstores everywhere.

PALM CITY – Lorrianna Colozzo likes to spend the holidays with family and friends. For her Dec. 13 Christmas concert at the Lyric Theatre, entitled “Tis the Season,” she has invited musicians, singers from the South Fork High School choir, dancers, and a group of children, including her daughter Isabella, to join her on stage. Colozzo lives in Palm City, where she teaches singing. A native of Syracuse, she started taking voice lessons when she was 10. “I went to New York City and saw my first Broadway show,” she said. “I wanted to be on Broadway.” One of her teachers had other ideas. “While she was warming me up, she kept me going higher and higher,” Colozzo said. “She said, ‘You have an opera voice,’ and

After a little while, I decided to audition for the Palm Beach Opera. My sister lived down here and I moved here and performed for several years.” Colozzo met her husband-to-be, Ben, a mortgage broker and real estate agent. “I told him I was going back to New York,” Colozzo said. Marriage and the birth of Isabella changed all that. “I’m very blessed to have a family and to be in a community with so much support,” she said. “It’s hard to go on tour. I’m enjoying so much being a mother.” Colozzo performs at churches in the area, including Holy Re-

PICKERS from page 1 Debuting in 2010, American Pickers is currently airing their fifth season on the History Channel. American Pickers offers insight into what it’s like to be in the antique industry as the two hosts travel the county searching for America’s lost and forgotten treasures. The show doesn’t look for valuables in flea markets, museums, auctions or anything open to the public, but picks for interesting or odd historical items from only private collections. As the show travels to the Southeast, a method that has been successful has been fans spreading the word. “A tool that has worked for us is spreading the word through word of mouth,” Friedman said. “People know people who know people, that’s one of the best ways we’ve found some of these valuables. COLOZZO from page 13 deemer in Palm City. A few years ago, the late Jack Christin heard her sing there and brought her to the attention of his wife, Ethel, a longtime Lyric board member and president. The result was her first Lyric show, held last year. “This year, John Loesser wanted me to do it again,” Colozzo said. “I wanted to include some people from the Treasure Coast area and share the stage.” For Colozzo, the evening celebrates her love for Christmas. “Christmas is my favorite time of the year,” she said. “I sing all of my holiday songs.” The program is much more than Colozzo, and that is how she wanted it. It opens with a jazz trio, consisting of the show’s music director and pianist, Evan Ferrar; bass player Scott Fereshetian; and drummer Chris Bowen. Dancers, with choreography by show director Tasha Patterson, accompany Colozzo’s entrance as she sings “We Need a Little Christmas,” from the show “Mame.” A touching vignette, “Christmas through a Child’s Eyes,” features a small group of children, including Isabella. “We forget what Christmas is all about,” Colozzo said. “Now that I have my child, I see it on her face.” Of course, there will be a visit from the man in the red suit, but this time, there will be a differ-

ence. “Santa Claus is a trained dancer,” Colozzo said. “He will come out and dance with me.” Colozzo will sing “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve” by Frank Loesser. This has special meaning for her. “I love Frank Loesser’s work and I’m honored his son is part of the theater,” she said. “I got notes (on the songs) from John.” After the intermission, 16 members of the South Fork High School choir, under the direction of Eileen Walentin, will accompany. Colozzo in more traditional works, including “O Holy Night.” They will also sing “What Child is This?” and “The Little Drummer Boy.” The program concludes with a rousing sing-along, with Colozzo and the choir leading the audience in Christmas favorites. Colozzo has been working on the program since March and she is looking forward to it. “There is nothing better than performing it at the Lyric,” she said. “It’s a beautiful, warm, intimate venue. I know people throughout the Treasure Coast, so it’s nice to perform there. I am so blessed to do what I love in my hometown.” Lorrianna Colozzo presents “Tis the Season” on Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. at the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave. Tickets are $35.
