STUART — The 54th annual Martin County Fair and Youth Livestock Show gets underway tonight, Friday, Feb. 14, with opening ceremonies at 6:30 p.m. “It’s not a festival; it’s the fair,” Jay Spicer, fair association manager, said. “We are the largest event in Martin County. We get over 75,000 visitors a year.” Not just Martin folks. The fair also pulls a bunch from St. Lucie and surrounding counties. Oh, yeah, there’s going to be lots of the traditional stuff that’s been around for the last 53 fairs. But there’s some new treats and twists on old ones. “There’ll be a petting zoo open

The CRA, adopted in 2002, includes 610 acres, and has about $1.3 million available for projects, which can circumstantially be combined with grants and other county dollars. Treasure Coast top cops say medical marijuana would cloud laws Patrick McCallister Staff writer
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TREASURE COAST — Top cops urge voters to just say no. That is just say no to a proposed constitutional amendment that would legalize medical marijuana. Legalize it far as the state’s concerned. Possession or distribution of marijuana would still be a federal crime in Florida. “It will become profoundly difficult for us to enforce any (state) marijuana laws with this amendment in force,” Martin County Sheriff William Snyder said in a telephone interview. He added, “This (proposed amendment) is not carefully crafted. It’s broadly crafted. Generally speaking, we’ll have a de facto legalization.” Something the sheriff doesn’t like for numerous reasons. “All (narcotic) substances I’ve ever seen as a law enforcement professional have a decaying

marijuana being sanctioned in the Florida Constitution. That has nothing to do with moral or social questions. He’s a lawman. “My problem with this situation is federal law still bans marijuana,” Bolduc said in a telephone interview. “It’s still against federal law to possess or distribute marijuana.” He added, “We’re going to have two conflicting policies. I’m against having unclear law. I took an oath to uphold the constitutions and laws of the federal government and state.” The Florida Supreme Court recently released a ruling allowing a ballot initiative to go forward that’ll let voters decide whether to permit doctors to prescribe marijuana. Of course, not much good to have a prescription without a source to get any medication. The ballot measure would also amend the Constitution to require the

Why deal with a salesman when you can work with the owner “I remember the days when I couldn’t hear the phone ring, my grand kids laughing or carry on a conversation with my husband. Treasure Coast walks to end type 1 diabetes Russ Schaffer, chairman he said. “Take insulin from my daughter and she’d be dead in a week.” Or suffer blindness or amputation. Diabetes is a leading cause of both. “Daughter,” by the way, is 24-year-old Chelsea Schaffer, who’s now living in Pittsburgh. She was diagnosed with diabetes when she was 2. Type 1 diabetes is much more severe than Type 2 diabetes. It’s also comparatively rare. Only about 5 percent of diabetics have Type 1, although all children who develop diabetes have it. While Type 2 can be controlled by healthcare regimens such as diet, relaxation and exercise, Type 1 requires stringent medical treatments.

TREASURE COAST — Every step takes them closer to a cure, Palm City’s Russ Schaffer said. Schaffer is the founder and chairman of the Treasure Coast Walk to Cure Diabetes. “I started it 12 years ago,” he said. “I started from scratch. I always had help, but I was always the chairman.” The 12th annual walk to raise research funding for finding ways to prevent and treat Type 1 diabetes will be on Saturday, April 12, at Flagler Park, 201 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart. Type 1 is also known as juvenile diabetes. Registration will start at 9 a.m., the walk at 10 a.m. The course is three miles. Last year the walk raised about $137,000. Schaffer has a motivation to find new therapies to treat and cure Type 1 diabetes. “Make no mistake about it, diabetes is a serious disease,”
“The Type 1 diabetics are insulin dependent,” Schaffer said. “If they don’t have insulin, they will die.” Schaffer organizes the walk for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Greater Palm Beach County Chapter. Peter Wernick is a strong supporter of Schaffer and the foundation. “It’s very difficult these days to not have someone in your life who doesn’t have Type 1 diabetes,” Wernick said. Wernick owns Peter’s Hardware Center, 1105 S.W. Martin Downs Blvd., Palm City. The store is accepting donations for the foundation. Schaffer said that it’s likely to become more the case that nearly everyone knows others with Type 1 diabetes. “Type 1 is on the rise,” he said. “It’s not on the decline.” The American Diabetes Association reports that about one in 400 children and youths have diabetes. Type 1 is exclusive in one and prevalent in the other

Letters to the editor To the editor: At the Martin County Commission meeting on Dec. 17, 201,3 the Commission made a wise and efficient decision to opt out of the Seven50 program. This decision was made after discussions were held at several meetings prior to Dec. 17. At the meetings leading up to the 17th, many citizens expressed themselves regarding the pros and cons of an involvement in the Seven50. Briefly, the Seven50 program is sponsored by the Federal Department of Housing and Urban Development. First mistake, federal government involved in local planning. Patrick McCallister, in his article in the “Your Voice” Dec. 27
edition, states that these discussions prior to and on Dec. 17 did not accomplish anything. To further criticize the Martin County Commission, he accused them of being disorganized. McCallister bragged about the fact that he has covered the Martin County Commission for “about a year now.” Let’s draw a quick comparison. I have been covering the Martin County Commission for over 40 years, longer than he is old. I’ve known them all, some good, some not so good, some sorry. The present commission, in my humble opinion, happens to fall on the good side. From my point of

Oh yeah, now we’re talking. And check this — the Wolves of the World Show. “(These are) rescued wolves that have been trained to do a show, Spicer said. “They’re one of the ground acts.” For the slightly-older-than-others kids, Seniors Day features four hours of the fair all to themselves. That’ll be 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18. The gates will open to everyone else at 4:30. “We open the fair just for them,” Spicer said. “No rides will be open. We bring in venders just for that block of time just for (seniors).” And there’ll be a game of ag bingo, along with a spelling bee. That’s “ag” as in “agriculture,” by the way. But, come on, why does anyone really go to the fair? That’s right, it’s all about the concentrated-calories taste-bud pleasures. “Well, there’s the Bacon Man,” Spicer said. “He has bacon on a stick and chocolate-covered bacon. You’ll be able to smell him from across the fairgrounds.” After eating all the foods that make doctors cringe, there’s the belly test. Don’t worry, there’re lots more where the Vertigo came from. Deggeller Attractions is putting on the midway. “They are home-based here in Palm City,” Spicer said. “They’ve got over 35 thrill rides.” OK, new stuff to do, food and rides are a plenty, but there’s are other reasons lots for folks head to the fair. Yeah, music. What’s going on this year? “Two of the country artists on the top of the charts right now,” Spicer said. That’s Tyler Farr, “Redneck Crazy,” and Eric Paslay, “Friday Night.” At press time, the concert schedule is still getting settled. Spicer said folks should like the fair’s Facebook page for the latest updates. Oh, and to get lots of chances to win free tickets. Sunday, Feb. 16, is Faith Day, which’ll get a visit from national contemporary Christian act MIKESCHAIR. “We’ll have all kinds of local praise teams that’ll be playing, including Cornerstone, which is the praise team I play in.” That’s right, a chance to see the fair manager drumming. Sweet. Cornerstone is from Palm City Presbyterian Church. The fair continues until Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Martin County Fairgrounds, 2616 S.E. Dixie Highway, Stuart. Hours vary and there are a number of specials. Find out more at www.martincountyfair.com.

view, Mr. McCallister leans toward “Let the government run the show, they can do it better.” I don’t think we have enough paper to list federal government’s failures. Case in point is the Federal Health Program, commonly called “Obamacare.” To bring this issue closer to home, another example is the Witham Field fiasco. I tell the following story because it is a classic example of government “takeover”. When Ms. Janet Gettig was

paid on property values higher than what they were in a base year — when the area was established — stay in that district for economic development and blight elimination for a set period of time. It’s called Tax Increment Financing.. In Martin the amount of that money CRAs retain for projects is between 50 and 95 percent. The commission annually decides the rate. This year the rate is 75 percent. The primary goal of Palm City’s 30-year CRA was construction of The Mapp Road Town Center Design, which was crafted in 2003. The plan a decade ago was for a Mapp Road that looked a lot like an old-fashioned town center. Sort of a shopping-friendly downtown between Martin Highway and Martin Downs Boulevard. Little progress has happened, frustrating many. In a previous Your Voice News & Views interview, Nikki Norton, president of the Palm City Chamber of Commerce, said many have questions about when they’ll start seeing any progress on Mapp improvements. “There’s Mapp Road this, Mapp Road that,” Norton said. “What’s going on with Mapp Road?” Freeman said that there have been a number of street and streetscape construction advances in the last decade that made much of the proposed engineering for the Mapp Road Town Center Design comparatively expensive. For example, the design called for stormwater to be shunted to a large retention area with underground pipes. “That’s an expensive undertaking,” Freeman said. “Plus it takes property off tax rolls. We understood that direction was wrong. The cost of the project up front is expensive. Also, everything you put underground, you’re adding a cost for maintenance in coming years.” Freeman said engineers are now crafting designs that take advantage of improvements to road and sidewalk materials. At the core of a developing design is ditching Mapp’s swales, the
www.YourVoiceWeekly.com a member of the Martin County Commission, she and I would meet for lunch once each month to discuss county matters. She came into one of these meetings very frustrated. When I asked her what the problem was, she told me that the problem was that the federal government had connived to take over control of our local airport. Maybe Mr. Mccallister would like to see the government control local planning for our county. I say that the County Commis-
shallow gullies running alongside the road to rid it of storm water. If the proposed design is built, the land-gobbling swales would be replaced with gravel-filled chambers topped by landscaping, pervious concrete for sidewalks, or porous asphalt for on-street parking. Freeman said that work on Mapp Road could begin this year. Separate work is slated to fourlane Martin Highway to start between spring and summer of 2014, said Betsy Jeffers, design project manager at FDOT. It’ll continue in portions until at least 2017. Freeman said the Mapp project would likely be done in pieces, because it could cost around $3 million or more. “The way we’re trying to design this, we can do it in a modular way,” he said. The Neighborhood Advisory Committee won’t give any design county staff develop final approval. That has to be done by the County Commission acting as the Community Redevelopment Agency. However, it will make recommendations to the commission. About a year ago the commission voted to start accepting applications for the volunteer Neighborhood Advisory Committee it disbanded shortly after the 2012 elections, when it made several changes to the county’s Community Redevelopment Agency, CRA. The county commission disbanded the agency and assumed its role administering Martin’s seven Community Redevelopment Areas. The Neighborhood Advisory Committee’s first meeting was in November. Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, said slow progress on Mapp Road is because of financial difficulties the county has had since the Old Palm City CRA was created. “It isn’t the county dragging its feet,” he said. “It’s the amount of money they’ve got to work with.” Future meetings of the Neighborhood Advisory Committee will be on Mondays May 19 Aug. 18 and Nov. 17. Other meetings can be called.

Florida Department of Health to register and regulate businesses involved in the growing, transporting and selling of marijuana for medical use. If approved, the measure would also allow caregivers registered and regulated by the department to assist those with prescriptions to use marijuana. Chances are voters will approve the proposed amendment. According to numerous reports, 80 percent or more Floridians favor allowing medical marijuana. People United for Medical Marijuana are advocating the proposed amendment. Governor Rick Scott and many in the Florida Legislature oppose the amendment, but it’s hard to say that there’s organized, sophisticated resistance to it. The Supreme Court weighed in on the proposed ballot measure after Attorney General Pam Bondi filed a challenge holding that the language is misleading. The court’s decision to let it move to voters wasn’t about whether medical marijuana is legally OK — simply that the ballot language was clear enough for voters to reasonably understand what they’re being asked to decide. There are already 20 states that allow medical marijuana, as does Washington, D.C. This year Florida is one of nine states with
www.YourVoiceWeekly.com pending legislation to allow it. Two other states are considering bills that’ll make medical use a defense against state prosecution for marijuana possession. California was the first state to approve medical marijuana. That was in 1996. Two states have decriminalized marijuana for recreational use — Colorado and Washington. Still, back in Port St. Lucie the town’s chief is swimming in legal questions he feels have gone unresolved as medical marijuana advanced state by state. “I don’t believe the state can legalize (marijuana) when it’s (a federal offense),” Bolduc said. In a recent CNN interview, President Barack Obama said that removing marijuana from federal Schedule 1 narcotics lists is strictly Congress’ job. There are no notable efforts in Congress to do so. In the meantime, the Obama administration has done similarly to its predecessors and taken a wait-and-see approach to states that have or are considering approving medical and recreational marijuana. Enforcement of federal marijuana laws is largely relaxed in them. Snyder said “medical marijuana is a subterfuge.” He said many of its advocates are simply working piecemeal to legalize recreational marijuana.

The power of “thank you” is the central theme of House of Hope’s 15th Annual Hearts for Hope Luncheon, which will be held March 24 at Sailfish Point Country Club. John Kralik, author of “A Simple Act of Gratitude,” is the featured speaker. In his book, Kralik discusses how, during a period of hardship, he was inspired to begin writing thank-you notes as a way to feel grateful for the good things in his life. He set a goal of writing 365 notes in the coming year, and immediately after sending his very first notes, significant and surprising benefits began to come his way. Thank-you note by thank-you note, his whole life turned around. Kralik’s uplifting memoir provides an example that everyone can follow, and guests at Hearts for Hope will receive a special gift to help carry out this inspiration. The event is part of the agency’s 30th anniversary celebration.
Since 1984, House of Hope has been fighting hunger and hardship in Martin County and today touches more than 5,000 people per month with services that include food, clothing, furniture, financial assistance, information and referral, and life-changing case management services to local people in need. Hearts for Hope begins at 10:30 a.m. with unique shopping opportunities, including about a dozen distinctive vendors with custom jewelry and accessories as well as treasures from House of Hope. A variety of prizes have been donated for a special drawing. The grand prize is a necklace valued at $5,500, donated and designed by Terry Rieger of Diamonds by Terry. The 18-inch necklace features a sculpted leopard ornament with diamonds, sterling silver, 14-kt gold, pearls and smoky quartz beads. The Hearts for Hope committee is led by chairwoman Jennifer

MARTIN COUNTY — In spite of all the rain, the High Tea Benefit was a great success for The Children’s Museum of the Treasure Coast as guests braved the weather for the fundraiser that was held on Jan. 29. Sponsored by U.S. Trust, the High Tea Benefit was a first time event for The Children’s Museum, and was in
lieu of their annual Purse Party. Originally to be held at the home of Jack and Ceejay Heckenberg of Sewall’s Point, Mother Nature had other plans, so the event was relocated to the Mansion at Tuckahoe. Benefactors not only enjoyed tea, sandwiches, scones, and champagne, but also live music

The glass adds an artistic blaze to the doorway in several ways. For one, it’s aesthetically appealing with numerous styles and pricing available including impact glass & doors. Beyond that, the glass lets sunshine fill a home’s foyer, living room, or kitchen with ambient lighting. “It’s a door transformation — that’s what it is,” Ventoliere said. library programs for children and adults. Scott Eyman, former literary and art critic for the The Palm Beach Post and author of 11 books, will be the featured speaker. Scott will be talking about his latest book that he co-authored with actor Robert Wagner, “You Must Remember This,” which is being released in March. Eyman promises to delve into movie star life behind the scenes which should make for an interesting conversation. A reviewer on www.goodreads. com commented, “With a career spanning more than five decades, few actors are more qualified to recount the glamorous Hollywood era of the late 1940’s and early 1950’s than Robert Wagner. You Must Remember This is Wagner’s ode to a bygone age, to its incomparable style and how it was displayed, and to its legendary stars. Wagner revisits the houses, restaurants, and other haunts of Hollywood’s elite, offering an intimate view of their lives on and off screen. He fondly recounts mythic figures simply entertaining at home among friends, away from the publicity machine and public eye that morphed into today’s paparazzi culture. Wagner also discusses the business of Hollywood and its evolution from an industry once dominated by moguls to one run by agents, and examines the career arcs of his peers, carefully considering
why some survived and others faded. Engaging and entertaining, “You Must Remember This” is a window into the splendors of an erstwhile era and an opportunity for readers to live vicariously through one its most beloved leading men”. Eyman’s interest in Hollywood legends has been the subject of many of his books including The New York Times bestseller “Pieces of My Heart” that he also co-authored with veteran actor Robert Wagner. Barnes & Noble will be selling books and guests at the luncheon will be able to purchase a signed copy of his latest publication. Scott will also be a moderator at BookMania! on March 8 at Martin County High School. Eyman has penned a biography “John Wayne: The Life and Legend”, scheduled for release on April 1. Sponsors for the event to date include Publix Supermarket Charities, The Complete Rod Taylor site (rodtaylor.com) and media sponsors WQCS 88.9 FM and Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers and TC Palm. Tickets for the luncheon are $85 and may be purchased at www. mclsfriends.org, at Bonnie’s Books in the Blake Library or by mail. To purchase by mail, please make checks payable to Friends of the Martin County Library System and mail to 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart, FL 34996. Martin County celebrates ‘all that jazz’ Staff writer
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
STUART — The musical “Chicago” is one of those rare creations that has achieved success on the stage and the screen. It has spawned Tony awards and Oscars, and its Broadway revival, in 1996, holds the record for the longest-running musical revival and the longest-running American musical in Broadway history. The show is set during Prohibition and the Jazz Age. It is based on a play, “Chicago,” written by a reporter who covered the murder trials of two women in 1924. The musical features a pair of murderous women, and has a string of great Kander and Ebb songs including “All that Jazz,” “When You’re Good to Mama,” “Razzle Dazzle,” and Mr. Cellophane.” Martin County High School’s performing arts department will present the show Feb. 14-22. Kristal Eckhardt, the department director, spoke about why she chose this show. “We did it eight years ago, in 2006,” she said. “It was an absolute runaway sellout. It was the most-requested redo of any show we’ve ever done. More people said, ‘When are you doing ‘Chicago’ again?’ I like to let at least five years go by, but eight years is enough time.” The cast includes Megan
Somerville as chorus girl Roxie Hart, who has murdered her lover; Brittany Lustig as Velma Kelly, a vaudevillian who murdered her husband and sister; Michael Arechabala as lawyer Billy Flynn; Zach Kenny as Amos Hart, Roxie’s hapless husband; Mackenzie Taylor as Matron ‘Mama’ Morton, who runs the prison; and Savanna Weber as Mary Sunshine, a newspaper columnist. “They’re hard-working and really stepping up to the plate,” she said. “These are fun characters.” A special feature of the show is a dinner theater performance Feb. 15. “The award-winning culinary arts department is preparing a 15-course dinner,” Eckhardt said. “They’ve researched supper clubs of the 1920s and that’s the menu.” Make plans to come for dinner or just for a show. Either way, you’ll have a ‘razzle-dazzle’ good time. The Martin County High School Performing Arts Department presents “Chicago” Feb. 14-16 and Feb. 20-22, at the Wanda Yarboro Performing Rafts Center, 2801 S. Kanner Highway, Stuart. Performances are Feb. 14-15, 20, 21, 22 at 7 p.m., with a matinee Feb. 16 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. There will be a special dinner show Feb. 15 with dinner at 6

StarStruck says ‘Come to the Cabaret’ Shelley Koppel Staff writer
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
STUART — In the interests of full disclosure, “Cabaret” was the first Broadway show I saw. It was the original production, with Joel Grey as the Emcee, and I left the theater transported. It began a love affair with musical theater that has never gone away. StarStruck Theatre will present a professional production of the Kander and Ebb show Feb. 21-March 2 with a cast led by Peter Jones as the Emcee. It will be directed by his wife, Jennifer Jones, who has performed in the show as Sally Bowles. She spoke recently about the difference in perspective as a performer and a director and the challenges and pleasures of directing her husband. “I have always been a fan of this show,” she said. “I performed in it more than 10 years ago. I had a lot of different ideas, even when I was performing, I’m excited to be directing and producing it. “Peter is phenomenal. I’m being quite objective. We have to be able to be objective and honest
with each other. Age looks wonderful on Peter. As a performer, it’s best when we can break down walls in front of the audience. We get more comfortable in our own skin (as we get older.) He’s a vulnerable, sexy, raw, sensitive Emcee.” In addition to Jones as the Emcee, the cast includes Alix Paige as Sally Bowles; Rae Randall as Fraulein Schneider; Lauren Espitia as Fraulein Kost; Patrick Wilkinson as Cliff Bradshaw; Jonathan Cummings as Ernst Ludwig; John Carlile as Herr Schultz, and Pete Morello as Max. Maria-Elena Alfieri, who appears as Frenchie, is the choreographer, Todd Bearden is the lighting director and Missy Weigel is again serving as stage manager. It is the Emcee, however, who is the focal point. Different directors have emphasized different facets of the Emcee’s personality, and Jones has her own take. “I see the Emcee, first and foremost, as playful,” she said. “That’s why Peter’s perfect. He can tap into his playful side. I see him as someone who can love everyone but is watching everybody and everything. “He’s almost chameleon-like. He can morph into a dancer, sit

He blends into any situation. I see him as a playful chameleon, all knowing and all-seeing. He’s a power force. We never know who the Emcee really is.”
