MARTIN COUNTY — Half cent for three years? Full cent for 10? Somewhere in the middle, say a full or half cent for five years? At its last February meeting, the Martin County Commission considered details of a proposed additional sales-tax that will likely go to voters to decide in the November general elections. At its Dec. 3 regular meeting, the com-

Life-long Palm City resident heads Stuart museum Mary Jones, executive director of the Stuart Heritage Museum, holds a picture of the Palm City Bridge that she grew up near. The lifelong Palm City resident remembers when there were only 12 streets with houses, and children played without traffic hazards. Among other things, she’s working to help the museum digitize its collection.

STUART — Mary Jones is a rarity. She was born in Martin Memorial Hospital, as it was known then, and moved to Palm City as an infant in 1945. She attended Stuart High School, which was the only high school in the county. Today, she lives three blocks from where she was raised, in a home she has lived in for 42 years. Her adult children were raised in Palm City and all still reside here. Jones said that Palm City was a very different place. “There were dirt roads,” she said. “There were 12 streets of houses. Everybody knew everybody and you could run and play. There was no traffic. It was a wonderful childhood.” Jones was a travel agent for 19

Commissioner Anne Scott, Hobe Sound, said at the meeting. Options the commission discussed ranged from an additional half-cent for three years to a full cent for 10. “I support 1 cent over five years,” John Haddox, Palm City, said at the meeting. According to county staff, a onecent local sales tax could raise about $20 million a year. A half cent about $10 million. The sales tax would go to $5,000 of any purchase. After that, consumers would continue to pay Martin’s current sales tax, 6 cents for every $1. The earliest any local salestax option could start now is in January of 2015. The commission had an opportunity to hold a special election last year. If voters had approved a proposed sales

years and a frequent visitor to the Stuart Heritage Museum in downtown Stuart. She often went with her mother, Rose Walton, who was an original member. Several years ago, Jones was asked to join the museum board. When the executive director, Chris Sawicki, became too ill to serve, she was named president and then executive director. She has been at that job for three years. “Almost immediately, we closed the museum,” she said. “It was completely renovated. We were closed for six months. We put a poured floor in the basement so there are now exhibits there. We made the top floor, which was originally the family home and then a storage area into an office/ meeting place. We opened December 2011 and membership has been skyrocketing ever since.” The building that houses the museum was built by George W. Parks in 1901. The George W. Parks Merchandise Store was on the first floor, with living quarters for the family upstairs. The building went through several incarnations, including Stuart Mercantile and Stuart Feed Store, before becoming the museum in 1992. Jones said that the museum gets a good mix of visitors. “There are old-timers who come for coffee who were born and raised here,” she said. “We have out-of-town visitors, too. People enjoy the whole museum. Children love the sharks and gators and adults love the to-scale trains and old pictures. “There are old appliances, sewing machines and things we remember from stores as children. We have a school section that has yearbooks from the 1920s and

Actually, the commission just sort of watched the previous tax proposal make a few gasps for air and die as various motions couldn’t find seconds. Commissioner Doug Smith, Jensen Beach, supported the proposed local-option sales tax in August, but voted against it in December. After that meeting, he said the state legislature is likely during its upcoming 60day session, March to May, to make changes to statutes that allow counties to enact local tax options. He said those changes could make anything the Martin commission decides in coming months moot by the time voters could have a say. Another contentious issue for

1930s.” A big project for the museum is celebrating 100 years of the City of Stuart. As part of the 100th anniversary celebrations, the Women’s Club of Stuart and the Stuart Heritage Museum are presenting a program, “Century in Review: 100 Years of Stuart,” at the Lyric Theatre March 29. The program will feature music, singing, skits a fashion show and a narrated photographic retrospective of the city. Jones has another big project on her plate. “It’s called Past Perfect” and it is cataloguing the museum into a computer catalog,” she said. “If you’re looking for an item, you can type it in and it will come up. Eventually, there will be a complete catalog of the museum. Every person and place has its own file. We have organized the files and I can pull a file and hand it to you.” Jones said that the project makes it easier for researcher and visitors to find things and there is more space to work. “It’s roomy, clean and organized,” she said. It’s taken three and a half years to do it but it’s a labor of love.” The Stuart Heritage Museum is located at 161 S.W. Flagler Ave., in downtown Stuart. The museum is open every day from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., except for holidays. Admission is free and donations are welcome. For more information, call (772) 220-4600 or visit the website www.stuartheritagemuseum.com. “Century in Review: 100 Years of Stuart,” will be presented at the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. the commission is how narrowly to craft an ordinance about what the proposed additional sales-tax revenue could be used for. Chairwoman Sarah Heard said she’d not support any proposal that didn’t tightly limit the additional revenue to just maintenance and repairs on existing roads, bridges and storm-water treatment areas. Haddox echoed her. “The scope of the use of the sales tax has to be narrowed down to specific projects,” he said. Taryn Kryzda, the county administrator, told the commission every year that maintenance lags adds about $10 million to the backlog. Haddox said that getting the proposed local sales tax to voters is urgent. “We have to move boldly,” he said. If we don’t address our backlog it’s only going to get more expensive in the future.”

The Vietnam Veterans of America’s Chapter 1041 is going to give the Martin County Veterans Service Office upward to about $20,000 to help veterans in need, thanks to 17 sponsors and 172 shooters. On Saturday, March 1, the chapter hosted its third Veterans Fun Shoot. That was at Palm City’s South Florida Shooting Club. Frank Tidikis, treasurer, said there’s still a lot of accounting to be done, and some bills to pay, but the shoot appears to have raised about $50,000 to $50,500. Tidikis thinks that after expenses are figured, there should be about $20,000 to add to the Veterans Service Office’s rapid-response fund. “Based on the number of people there, we did better than the year before,” Tidikis said. “The year before, we had 119 participants.” Or about 53 fewer. Last year, 1041 raised $15,000 from the shoot to create the veterans rapid-response fund. The chapter added another

Bipartisan solutions to create jobs on the Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches Unemployment is at its lowest level since 2008; yet our
recovery has been far too slow and there are still too many people who either cannot find a job or are working more but making less. Congress must give its full attention to helping turn the economy around by creating an environment where businesses can expand more easily and create high-paying jobs that strengthen the middle class. One of the first things I did after taking office was to embark on a jobs tour consisting of over 70 meetings, roundtables, and “Congress At Your Company” events with local business leaders and workers. After a year of discussions, I have used my previous private sector experience and taken the many ideas from these conversations to shape a plan for job growth in the Palm Beaches and Treasure Coast. My plan consists of common sense, pro-growth policies that allow

new businesses to gain a solid foothold in a tough economy and
give existing businesses the confidence to expand and prosper. The first issue my plan addresses is the need to make the U.S. tax code competitive again. America’s corporate tax rate is the highest in the world. The United States has lost too many jobs to countries with lower taxes. Additionally, the complexity of the tax code unfairly burdens small businesses and middle-class families, forced to use scarce time to decipher complex legalese, spend money to hire outside expertise, or simply lose out on credits and deductions. Streamlining the tax code by lowering the overall tax rate and incentivizing new investment will help businesses create American jobs instead of relocating overseas or laying off workers. Previously working as a CPA at Deloitte & Touche and having started my own small environmental company, I have seen firsthand the burden unnecessary regulations have on
businesses. Too often outdated regulations do nothing but place drag on good companies or have an outsized impact on small businesses. I will encourage the Small Business Administration to develop a list of existing regulations that unfairly burden small businesses and work to fix them. Further, I am working on legislation to review old regulations for relevance in today’s marketplace. Finally, America must reinvest in our country to create a path to sustained growth. Investing in America starts with rehabilitating our infrastructure, which businesses need to move goods, workers need to get to work, and our increasingly connected society needs to exchange information. It means revitalizing our education system so that all Americans —whether newly graduated, mid-career, or returning from serving our nation overseas — have the skills they need in

the jewels were “A bumble bee is considerably faster than a John Deere tractor” and “Always drink upstream of the herd.” Those are pretty self-explanatory, but I thought I would expound on some of my favorites from the list. “Life is simpler then you plow around the stump.” How many times do we see a problem or obstacle that appears to be in our path and instead of trying to figure a way around it, we plow straight ahead, taking the most difficult path? We have many stumps in our way that can either throw us from our main objectives or stop us completely in our path to progress. Some of the stumps that come to mind are overly restrictive regulations that have to be followed, employees who might be better avoided than confronted and even that partner who refuses to conform to the group’s objectives. Most likely, these things will remain in your path and our goal should be to leave them where they are and cultivate around them, allowing our jobs to continue without being deterred by their entrenched positions. You might not like them, they may be in the way, but they should not prevent you or be an excuse for you not getting your assigned tasks accomplished. Reinvesting dividends can be a smart move A
s an investor, you’ll eventually need to make all sorts of decisions — and some will be difficult. But there’s one choice you can make that can be relatively easy: reinvesting stock dividends. It’s simple to reinvest dividends — you just need to sign up for a dividend reinvestment plan. Once you do, you won’t receive dividends directly as cash; instead, your dividends will be directly reinvested in the underlying equity. Be aware, though, that you may incur a fee when reinvesting dividends. By doing some research, you can find companies that have not only consistently paid dividends year after year but also increased those dividend payments regularly. (Keep in mind that companies are not obligated to pay dividends and can reduce or discontinue them at any time.) By reinvesting dividends, you may be able to realize some key benefits. First, you’ll be building your share ownership, which can help you build wealth. No matter what the market is doing, adding shares can be beneficial — but may be especially valuable when the market is down. When share prices are low, reinvesting dividends — which don’t typically

Jamie Chapogas fluctuate with share price — can help boost your investment reach further, simply because each reinvested dividend can buy more shares than at the previous higher share price. Consider this: It took investors 25 years to recover from the Crash of 1929 if they did not reinvest their dividends — but it only took them 15 years to recover from the crash if they did reinvest dividends, according to Ned Davis Research. And we’ve seen
VIEW
the same phenomenon in more recent years, too. Since 1987, according to Ned Davis Research, we’ve had three major market corrections: Black Monday in 1987; the bursting of the dot-com bubble from 2000 to 2002; and the bursting of the subprime and credit bubbles in 2008. The S&P 500 rose following those market corrections. Investors who stayed invested during those corrections had the opportunity to participate in rising markets. Those investors participating in a dividend reinvestment plan may have been able to buy more shares at a lower price. Of course, past performance doesn’t guarantee future results and the value of your stock shares can fluctuate, including the loss of principal. While reinvesting your dividends clearly can be beneficial, you do have to be aware that, even if you aren’t receiving the dividends as cash, you will be taxed on them. But the dividend tax rate remains quite favorable — if you’re in
the 25 percent, 28 percent, 33 percent or 35 percent brackets, your dividends will be taxed at 15 percent. If your taxable income is more than $400,000 (or $450,000 for couples), your dividend tax rate is 20 percent. If your adjusted gross income is $250,000 or more (for married couples filing jointly) or $200,000 or more (if you’re single), you’ll also have to pay a 3.8 percent Medicare tax on your dividends. While taxes are a consideration when investing, they should never be the driving factor. Consider also that investing in dividend-paying stocks does carry some risk — specifically, the value of your investment may fluctuate, causing you to lose some, or all, of your principal. But you may be able to reduce the impact of this possible volatility by sticking with quality stocks as part of a diversified portfolio. As we’ve seen, reinvesting dividends can help you build your investment portfolio — so consider putting this technique to work in your investment strategy. METH from page A1 jurisdiction that says they don’t have meth has their heads in the sand.” He attributed a seeming sharp increase in meth use and production to 2011 legislation that greatly tightened access to opioids, such as oxycodone, and drastically increased their prices. The sheriff said opioid addicts were left scrambling for new sources of drugs. “I would have never thought that they’d go to meth use,” he said. Snyder later added, “I don’t think we’re seeing a new class of drug addicts. We have drug users who are going to a new drug.” Sgt. Charlie Lumpkin at the Port St. Lucie Police Department also said there’s been a visible uptick in meth use. He also attributed it to the prescription-drug monitoring program the state introduced in 2011. “Oxys were going for $15 a pill,” he said. “That was before (the monitor program). Once that came on board, I noticed that the price for the ones were buying (for investigations) increased 100 percent. They’re were going for $30, $40 a pill.” Lt. Douglas Hardie, St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, said that price is consistent with what he’s seeing. “The street value of prescription
drugs is somewhere around a $1 a milligram,” he said. “So, if you’re getting a 30 milligram oxycontin, that’s $30. That’s pretty pricey for a high.” He added, “If you buy two pills at 30 milligrams each, you’re around $60.” Three of the five Martin meth labs were in Palm City, two on Ranchwood Street. Snyder said that the recent Tropical Farms bust was by far the largest meth lab Martin cops have encountered lately, and it was likely supplying numerous buyers in Tropical Farms and Palm City. “The other four were what we call ‘one pot’ cooks,” Snyder said. “Someone making enough meth for personal use and not enough for sell.” However small, meth-making operations are a public hazard. Meth labs are extremely volatile. In October, last year, one at an apartment complex on Southwest Sunset Trace Circle, Palm City, exploded. Additionally, houses where meth has been produced are left with toxic residues. Lumpkin said 11 of St. Lucie’s drug investigators got specialized training from the Drug Enforcement Administration. “When these guys make entry, they’re suited up,” he said. “They wear masks, breathing masks. It’s a different way to do business with meth. It’s a whole new ball game. I’ve never done that be-

fore.” Snyder plans to combat methamphetamine with an approach similar to what the Sheriff’s Office did to curb the scourge of pillowcase burglaries in Martin — by deputizing the entire county to spot and report meth houses. On Thursday, March 27, the sheriff will host a town hall meeting, “The Faces of Meth: What You Should Know about the Growing Meth Problem in Our Community.” That’ll be at the Blake Library, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart, from 6 to 8 p.m. “I’m going to evaluate the response on this,” Snyder said. “If it’s a good response and it seems meaningful, we’ll do more (town halls).” Snyder said Martin residents attending pillowcase-burglaries town halls for education, then reporting suspicious behavior with detailed information, was the largest deterrent to that form of crime. The county’s last apparent pillowcase burglary was in Palm City on Friday, Dec. 13. The previous one before that was in October. Over about two years, the county had 108 pillowcase burglaries. In that time, 62 burglars were arrested. “Martin County has so far proven up to the task,” Snyder said. He added, “(Meth) is a community challenge. This is not a law enforcement challenge.” Martin’s top cop said that curb-
www.YourVoiceWeekly.com ing meth production is important; however, it won’t end drug problems. When Snyder became a sworn lawman in 1973, heroin and LSD were prevalent drugs. “LSD went away,” he said. “Heroin use almost disappeared, but it came back.” The sheriff also said, “Today it’s meth. Two years from now there may be a new designer drug we’re battling.” The only drug that seems to resist swings is marijuana, Snyder said. The Florida Supreme Court recently released a ruling allowing a ballot initiative to go forward that’ll let voters decide whether to permit doctors to prescribe marijuana. Of course, not much good to have a prescription without a source to get any medication. The ballot measure would also amend the Constitution to require the Florida Department of Health to register and regulate businesses involved in the growing, transporting and selling of marijuana for medical use. If approved, the measure would also allow caregivers registered and regulated by the department to assist those with prescriptions to use marijuana. Federal laws against marijuana would remain in effect in Florida if voters approve the ballot measure.

METH from page A10 Chances are voters will approve the proposed amendment. According to numerous reports, 80 percent or more Floridians favor allowing medical marijuana. Snyder said in previous interviews that the proposed amendment is so broadly written that it’ll make enforcing any state marijuana restrictions difficult. Snyder had a tip to anyone considering meth, which is extremely addictive. “When you use meth, you traded your life for a disease,” Snyder said. “You went up to the count-
er, took your life and put it down and bought a disease.” Christine Christofek Weiss, spokeswoman, said the Martin Sheriff’s Office now has officers who are specializing in curtailing meth, and more will get the DEA training in coming months. “We have two guys, undercover, and that’s all they’re going to be doing,” she said. Hardie said that while there was an apparent increase in meth-house busts in St. Lucie in 2012 into 2013, it seems to have tapered off. “I hope I’m not jinxing myself,” he said.

What are we saying when we carry a grudge? “I am too important for you to hurt me, lie to me, etc.” Are we really stating that we are perfect and never hurt anyone, so how dare someone hurt us? Forgive, forget and live past the hurts. If the person is just mean, unbearable, hateful, see quote No. 1. If they are dear to you, speak to them and try to resolve the situation. If nothing else, realize that life is too short and people are worth the effort to invest understanding and forgiveness into them. One person stated it well -- they likened holding a grudge as allowing someone to live rentfree in our minds. Keeping on task often is hard in management positions anyway because of numerous interruptions and distractions during our work day. Seek to enter each challenge or need of your help as an opportunity to change someone’s day, a way to expand your knowledge, or a way to empower an employee to make appropriate decisions under your direction. Keep it in mind that we can cause more trouble than many people put together due to our positions of leadership in our office. Our moods and mannerisms often flow downhill and can positively or negatively affect an office. Let our moods and mannerisms be those that we want to see and that our customers want to see displayed. veterans organizations for donations to help those folks. The guys at the VVA 1041 just didn’t like the thought of hungry veterans waiting for Reese to get a hold of people for help. So, they told him about their idea: a rapid-response fund that he could tap immediately and file reports at the end of the month. Reese thought the upstart chapter meant $500, $1,000. After all, it only had maybe 70-some members, right? He said getting a $17,500 rapid-response account bowled him over. “It makes my job 10 times easier,” Reese said in a previous interview. “I
don’t have to think how to get (a veteran in need) help. I can focus on what help he needs.” Tidikis said the fund, which was established in Ma,y has about $8,000 left in it. In February, Reese tapped the fund for four veterans, giving them a total of $832. The month before, four veterans got $1,346 from the fund. “In December, we (helped) six guys,” Reese said in the previous interview. “It varied from rent and gas money to auto repairs.” Those six veterans got a combined $1,900 from the rapid-response fund. In November, only one veteran tapped

the rapid-response fund. So, how many veterans has the rapid-response fund helped since its creation? Tidikis waxed philosophical about that question. “All of them,” he said. George Mittler, president, said Martin County is very responsive to veterans, and that’s made 1041’s fundraising much easier. Indeed, he said the Treasure Coast is very supportive of veterans. “The sponsorship (was from) all over the place,” Mittler said. “All over Palm City and Stuart. We want to thank our numerous sponsors from throughout Martin County and St. Lucie County. Without their help, (the shoot) wouldn’t be possible.” Sponsorships account for the majority of the money raised,
Tidikis said. “The sponsors underwrote the shoot. They provided about $32,700 to the shoot.” Membership in the Vietnam Veterans of America is open to all veterans who served in Vietnam from February 1961 to May 1975, and all veterans who served from August 1964 to May 1975. Meetings are on the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. They’re held at Sewall’s Point Town Hall, 1 S. Sewall’s Point Road. According to the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs, there are about 500,000 Vietnam veterans in the Sunshine State. They make up almost a third of the state’s veterans population. Martin County has about 14,700 veterans. It likely has almost 5,000 Vietnam-era veterans. To find out more about the chapter, visit www.vva1041.

Patrick Murphy, D-Jupiter, unveiling the blueprint for his job growth plan for the Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches at a forum hosted by the Economic Councils of Palm Beach and Martin counties on Feb. 24 at The Gardens Mall in Palm Beach Gardens. The plan consists of bipartisan, common sense policies that will allow less regulations on small startups and provisions to help existing businesses prosper, Murphy said.
TREASURE COAST — As a member of perhaps the most greatly divided Congresses in history, freshman Congressman Patrick Murphy from the Treasure Coast said he’ll exhaust every opportunity to bridge the partisan divide that has split the House in half. Murphy’s latest effort at bipartisanship to benefit his district, which also encompasses the northern sliver of Palm Brach County, is his jobs plan, which he unveiled last week. Murphy’s plan consists of 11 points that need strengthening, restructuring or simplification. They include, making the U.S. tax code competitive again, boosting manufacturing exports, leading the world in research and development, reducing regulations on business, rehabbing the U.S. infrastructure, giving veterans more job opportunities, expanding access to capital, speeding up the housing recovery, maintaining a vibrant tourism industry, supporting agriculture and perhaps most
importantly, revitalizing the education system. “I would say long term, getting education right is the single most important thing we can do for our economy,” Murphy said. Murphy, who has personally delivered supplies to schools in need, said more funding must be invested in education to ensure children blossom into productive workers in the private sector. Teachers must also be compensated justly for their work, Murphy said. “It has a lot to do with the funding of the education system,” Murphy said. “Teachers shouldn’t be treated like second-class citizens and shouldn’t be blamed for some of the fiscal woes we’re in.” Employing veterans is also a vital component of the plan, the congressman said. “Our veterans are trained in many skill sets that can be used in the private sector when they come home,” Murphy said. “One of the keys that we’ve tried to promote is boots to jobs, connecting veterans with jobs right here in the district and making

Palm City’s Don Wells is a bit of living military history. He appears to be the last Navy pilot to ever get wings for training on the single-engine, propeller attack-fighter plane. That was in December 1962 in a Douglas A-1 Skyraider. He flew his training flights out of the
Naval Air Station Corpus Christi. “I was like, ‘I got to fly this (expletive) prop and everyone else is flying jets,’” he said. OK, he wasn’t all that excited about getting the honor. It was 1962, after all. Prop fighters were losing their place in warfare, although Wells flew combat missions in them during the Vietnam War. He did finally get his jet — the
Palm City’s Don Wells holds a bit of Navy history. Among his many piloting credits, Wells was the last Navy pilot to do a training flight to get wings for single-engine fighter planes. He has the pilot log that records the event. That training flight was in a Douglas A-1 Skyraider, which was nicknamed the ‘Spad,’ jokingly referring to the age of the plane. SPAD were French biplane fighter aircraft of World War I.

JOBS from page A16 sure that small businesses know these veterans are here and looking for jobs.” Murphy said his plan will foster a better environment for small businesses and the jobs market to flourish, adding that the unemployment rate in his district is disappointing. “Unemployment here is 10 percent higher than the national average. That’s unacceptable,” Murphy said. “I don’t think the government should be responsible for creating jobs. I think it should create and help establish the environment for jobs growth.” Murphy’s plan also calls for Congress to enact a simpler tax code and also reduce the U.S. corporate tax code, which he said is the highest in the world. “I think we still have a lot further to go to get our tax rate competitive with the rest of the world,” Murphy said. “That is only going to come through a major bipartisan agreement up in Washington.” Simplifying the tax code is the toughest sell to Republicans, Murphy said. “Right now I don’t see the climate or the timing there to get that done. But, I’m continuing to
fight for it and work with colleagues on both sides of the aisle for major tax reform.” Murphy said his plan derived from his experience as a small business owner and his time as a CPA. He also held more than 60 “Congress at Your Company” visits with small business owners on the Treasure Coast to see where improvements are needed. Boosting manufacturing and exports is also important, since the U.S. imports more than it exports, Murphy said. Murphy wants small business owners to be aware of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, which is the official export credit agency of the U.S. Ex-Im Bank’s mission is to assist in financing the export of U.S. goods and services to international markets. “They will help to give loans and help a lot of the small businesses, if they can’t get a loan from the bank, Ex-Im Bank will provide that loan at a very low rate,” Murphy said. The bank’s head will be visiting the Treasure Coast in May to educate small business owners, Murphy said. To learn more about U.S. Rep. Patrick Murphy’s jobs plan, visit www.patrickmurphy.house.gov.

“My dad had Alzheimer’s disease for years, and Vivian and I took care of him in our home. A friend told me how Treasure Coast Hospice can help. They provided Dad’s medications, a wheelchair, a shower chair and oxygen. The RN and hospice aide showed us their love and patience as they helped us give Dad all the care he needed. We suggest calling Treasure Coast Hospice as early as possible.”

Weekly bowling — without the heavy balls
Avoid becoming A victim of crime

Attend our Personal Safety Seminar Become educated on the types of crime you may be subjected to at The Brennity at Tradition on March 12. PALM CITY — On a Friday afternoon, eight seniors gather at the Peter & Julie Cummings Library. One moment, they’re sharing laughs. Another, they’re silent and attentive as monks. Kika Barber stands still with a Wii Remote in hand. With a ballerina’s grace, she steps out while gliding her hand forward. The large screen in front of her shows a bowling ball rolling toward pins. Strike. Her competitors softly cheer. Among them is Barb Wirtes. “I have Parkinson’s, and the doctor said it helps to play the Wii,” Wirtes said after the game. “They’re putting them into nursing homes.” Barber and Wirtes are regulars at the Cummings’ Senior Wii Bowling League. Janet Ryerson,
docent volunteer, runs it. “We’ve been doing this for about three years,” she said. “The manager at that time thought that it might be a good idea. They tried to do it in all the libraries, but ours was the only one where it seemed to work.” The Nintendo game has been around since 2006. Wii took games from handheld controllers that demanded thumb dexterity to a remote that responds to body movement. In addition to bowling, folks can play golf, tennis, box and do other virtual sports on Wii. But bowling seemed like a perfect fit for seniors, who have a higher-than-average rate of disabilities. “We had people in the past who had trouble walking,” Ryerson said. “Yes, you can do it sitting down. We had one guy who was almost blind. If he got close

ST. LUCIE WEST — Celebrated rock ‘n’ roll singer songwriter and guitarist Eddie Money will perform at the Sunrise Theatre on Sunday, March 9 at 7 p.m. Don’t miss a night of rock ‘n’ roll beats and high energy that will keep you singing and dancing all night long. Eddie Money hit the music scene in 1977 with the debut album, “Eddie Money,” which went on to achieve double platinum status and generated two top 40 hits — “Baby Hold On” and “Two Tickets To Paradise.” Money followed up with albums throughout the ‘80s and into the early ‘90s with “Playing for Keeps,” “No Control” (generating his first No. 1 hit single “Think I’m in Love”), “Where’s the Party,” “Can’t Hold Back” (including the Grammy-nominated duet with Ronnie Spector “Take Me Home Tonight” and “I Wanna Go Back”), “Nothin’ to Lose” (No. 1 hit “The Love in Your Eyes”), and “Right Here” (Top 10 hit “Heaven in the Back Seat”). Eddie has recorded more than a dozen albums of his own and has sold over 28 million records. Money’s popularity and knack for producing hits paid off. His songs have been featured on the soundtracks for more than twenty films and television programs including: The Office, Sideways, Grown Ups and The King
of Queens, as well as two Grand Theft Auto and Guitar Hero video games. Money has also appeared as himself on television shows, such as Don’t Forget the Lyrics! and The Drew Carey Show. “Everything I do, I do it for you.” Eddie Money says it at least once, every show. And he means it. Eddie continues to be one of the hardest working men in rock ‘n’ roll performing a compact 150 or so shows every year. Eddie is always touring, somewhere. “My fans are the best, most loyal fans a guy could ask for change that?” Don’t miss the legendary Eddie Money rockin’ and shakin’ the Sunrise Theatre for one night only. She enjoyed the seniors’ stories. On the other end of the age scale? “We had one gentleman who was 95 years old,” Ryerson said. “He was really cool. He was a nice man.” Al Wirtes said Barb and he have been doing the Wii bowling for about two years now. It’s become a couple’s weekly day outing. Barb gets her hair done, the two get lunch, and they they’re off to bowl. “Were supposed to exercise, so that contributes to some of the exercise we’re supposed to do,” Wirtes said. “We’re supposed to walk and be active as we can be. (Wii) simulates real bowling, just like the alleys, but you’re not throwing a 16-pound ball.” Another plus, Wirtes said, is the bowling draws him into the Cummings’ idea lab, where he gets a lot of help navigating tech from Justin de la Cruz, digital literacy specialist “Time that I’m not bowling, I go over there and touch base with him,” Wirtes said. “He’s very knowledgeable and very good. Squeezing every drop of delicious music out of a note is what we do best at Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society, so it’s no small wonder that all of us from the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society are dancing in the streets and ready to announce our Second Annual Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Festival. This seminal event is in addition to the often sold out, weekly Jazz Jams at the Sunrise Theatre’s Black Box Theatre and Jazz Jams at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens and Tutto Fresco. We’re a busy bunch, don’t you think? All of us from the Society have worked hard for months, making calls, bending ears, and working hard to create a full week of marvelous, mind-blowing jazz and blues performances, March 24 through March 28 in historic, quaint downtown Fort Pierce. The Jazz & Blues Festival includes a series of five free midday concerts, Monday through Friday, March 24-28, from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m. on the waterfront across from the Main Library in downtown Fort Pierce. These lunchtime showcases will present a vast array of unforgettable, world-class jazz and blues artists. Brown bag lunches and beverages will be available. But if you can’t wait for Monday, plan to stop by MainStreet Fort Pierce’s awesome Seafood Festival Saturday, March 22, and you can shake down your Sunday, March 23, with an incredible Waterside Blues concert starring Otis Cadillac and the Eldorados, featuring the Sublime Seville Sisters. All 11 pieces of this remarkable group will be on hand, including octogenarian Otis Cadillac, whose R&B will set your soul aflame! Keep reading for more details. Monday, March 24, the Jazz & Blues Society will present the Phill Fest Quintet. It’s always a party when Phill Fest is around, and the music is non-stop and absolutely free. Bring your lawn chairs and a few bucks to toss into the bucket to help defray the cost of this incredible week of music and festivities. Voted “Best Jazz Artist” at the Bay Area Music Awards, Phil promises to
Don Bestor serve-up an appetizing afternoon of Brazilian Jazz from his newest CD. Tuesday, March 25, it’s Bluesday Tuesday with Rockin’ Jake and that harmonica that brings New Orleans together with Jamaica and marries swampfunk, blues, zydeco, and even a little hint of rock and roll and some serious “Badmouth.” The five-time winner of Off Beat Magazine’s “Best of the Beat Award,” you won’t want to miss Rockin’ Jake’s debut during Jazz Week. Wednesday, March 26, will having you dancing in the streets as the entire Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Ensemble is joined by the vocal stylings of Maurice Frank, and the music features James McCreavy and Steve Ahearn. Thursday, March 27, you can get spicy in the midday with Oscar Salas Latin Experience, and on … Friday, March 28, kick off your shoes and enjoy a little smooth jazz by the waterside with Scott Klarman and Sound of Vision, a group that artfully blends contemporary jazz with multi-cultural urban funk and Latin rhythms featuring Scott Klarman, Valerio Cantori and Orlando Machado. Early in the month, the Fort Pierce County Commission will be honoring the culture and music provided by the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society with a county-wide proclamation of Jazz Week. And as Jazz Week kicks off, Fort Pierce Mayor Linda Hudson will be leading the chorus as the Fort Pierce City Council also tips a collective beret to the music of the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues

Society and their contribution to the community during Jazz Week and all year long. To finish off Jazz Week with a sizzle, the Society will be hosting a grand show on Friday, March 28 at the Black Box Theatre at 7 p.m. sharp. You won’t want to miss FDO — The Big Swingin’ Band Night, featuring the music of your life, dancing in the aisles, and Bob Sagnella on vocals and alto sax. It’s the perfect way to dance cheek-to-cheek and finish off a solid week of fabulous music, free concerts, and a chance to help ensure that the music never stops as the next generation of talented musicians gets ready to learn who will win this year’s coveted Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society scholarships. The Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society’s mission is to present Jazz and Blues to the area by making these two American musical art forms available on a regular basis in order to foster greater appreciation and understanding. The Society hosts year-round live events, many of which are free to the public, maintains
an active and free master’s class program for area schools and offers merit scholarships to qualified local high school seniors. The Society will also be hosting its 2nd Annual Summer Jazz Camp this summer. For more information, contact the Jazz Hotline at (772) 460JAZZ (5299), or visit www. jazzsociety.org for a complete calendar of events that will make planning your social schedule a cool, ocean breeze.

and insurgency are among the worst threats. All this talk about COIN and Light Air Support is familiar to Wells. He was doing all that in the Skyraider over Vietnam. “For low flyovers, it was very, very good,” he said. Wells was usually flying “road recon.” “I’d fly low and look at all these roads,” he said. And trash anything enemy on them. “We were called road wreckies,” he said. Wells went to the Navy reserves in the late ‘60s, and ended up in the short-lived Air Barons, the U.S. Naval Reserve Tactical Flight Demonstration Team. It was based at the United States Naval Air Station Glenview. The team got official status in 1968. Its parent squadron disbanded in 1971. “It wasn’t like the ballet the Blue Angels flew,” Wells said. “It was more like a stock-car race.” Wells, 75, is now writing a book. The working title is “The Last Prop Pilot.” He said the book won’t be as much about him, but about being part of the winding down of propeller combat flying in the 1950s to 1960s. Oh, remember that guy who grumbled about getting stuck in a propeller attack-fighter when it seemed all others were getting jets? “I look back at it — I’m proud of it, being older,” Well’s said. “At the time, I was young. I wanted to fly jets.”
machine guns. The dogfight was born. By and large, World War I dogfights were awkward affairs marked as much by the dangers of mechanical and engineering difficulties as they were by bullets. By World War II the propeller attack-fighter airplane was a sleek, dangerous creature to things in the air, and on the water and land. By the end of World War II, the first jets were making their appearances. By the Korean War, jet fighters were coming into their own. Today aircraft such as the McDonnell Douglas F/A-18E/F Super Hornet rule the sky. Usually. It turns out that they have their limits. The American military might be wading back into propeller attack fighters. Last February the Air Force bought propeller-driven attack planes for the first time in decades. The Air Force bought 20 A-29 Super Tucano planes from Embraer Defense & Security for its Light Air Support, LAS, program. Those planes are getting built in Jacksonville and will likely go to the Afghan military eventually. Embraer makes the Phenom 100 and 300 executive jets in Melbourne. There are numerous reports that the A-29 has been used to support Navy SEALs on missions since perhaps 2009. Turns out that the propeller drive is good for the counterinsurgency, COIN, plane. Those are increasingly important in an age when terrorism

STUART – The musical “Sweet Charity” has an impressive pedigree. Based on a Federico Fellini screenplay, “Nights of Cabiria,” it has a book by Neil Simon, music and lyrics by Cy Coleman and Dorothy Fields and that choreography by Bob Fosse. The latter won a Tony for the show, which debuted in 1966 and starred Fosse’s wife, Gwen Verdon. With songs like “Big Spender” “I Love to Cry at Weddings” and “I’m a Brass Band,” the show has remained a popular favorite and has been revived several times on Broadway. The national touring company of “Sweet Charity” comes to the Lyric Theatre March 9-10 as part of the Broadway at the Lyric series. The show tells the story of Charity Valentine, an optimist who works as a dancer at the Fandango Ballroom in New York City. She hopes for a better life and true love. When she meets Oscar, she feels she may have found it, but he doesn’t know that she’s a dancer-for-hire. What happens to Charity’s dream is the heart of the show. Robert Biedermann wears several hats in the production. He
is the company manager and also portrays Herman, who owns the ballroom. Performing in this show has filled a dream of his. “I was a midshipman in Navy ROTC in college,” he said. “I volunteered for a 67-day submarine experience. As junior officers, we had a wardroom to eat, lounge and read. There was a library of VHS tapes. We had 18 hour duty, with six on and 12 off. I watched ‘Sweet Charity’ at least 10 times. I said, ‘Someday, I want to sing ‘I Love to Cry at Weddings.’ On opening night, I sang it. I waited 43 years. The realization was an –out of body experience.”’ Biedermann spent four years in the Navy. “My graduation gift was a trip to Vietnam for a year,” he said. “I got out in 1976. I’m honored to meet with veterans or families after the show.” Biedermann calls himself the “grandfather clause” because, at 64, he is decades older than the other performers, including Jessica Evans as Charity and Nathan McVicker as Oscar. He remembers the 1960s portrayed in the show, including the hippie culture. As the cast’s senior member, he worries that live theater could become a thing of the past in an increasingly on-demand

Students recognized for good character FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS
Family and friends of 27 special students packed into the WolfHigh Technology Center at Indian River State College’s Chastain Campus in Stuart on Feb. 26 for the annual Joe Kordick Youth Character Awards. The Kordick Awards, presented by United Way of Martin County’s CHARACTER COUNTS! program, are given annually to middle school students and high school seniors in the Martin County School District. Nominations of the students are based solely on their character; students whose lives and achievements demonstrate an enduring commitment to the qualities associated with good character — trustworthiness, responsibility, respect, fairness, caring and citizenship. “These awards are named in honor of the late Joe Kordick, founding Chairman and the driving force of CHARACTER COUNTS! in Martin County,” said Robyn Vanover, CHARACTER COUNTS! advisory board chair. “He believed that character development starts at

MARTIN COUNTY -- God was called “Our Mother and Father” in a prayer service celebrating the life of St. Catherine of Siena on Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Peter & Julie Cummings Library in Palm City. Nearly 150 people packed the library’s Donahue Room for a lecture on St. Catherine by Dr. Mary Carter-Waren of St. Thomas University. The lecture was followed by a prayer service, which featured prayers and readings by St. Catherine. This was the seventh annual program presented by the Celebrations Group, a small group of Martin County Catholic women who plan celebrations about women of faith. In the woman-led prayer service, God was mainly addressed in non-gendered terms like “Loving God.” Several times, however, the group addressed God in feminine terms in order to open themselves and others to a wider and deeper understanding of and love for God. Members of the Celebrations Group often

more … our mother.” They have noted that recently Pope Francis said, “The Lord feels compassion for us, like a mother does for her children.” St. Catherine (1347-1380) was a mystic, a theologian, a counselor, a politician, and a peacemaker. In 1970 she became one of the first two women to be proclaimed a doctor of the Catholic Church. Carter-Waren explained that Catherine, in her many letters, had the courage to challenge
civic and religious leaders – and they listened! Despite being a woman and a layperson, Catherine helped bring Pope Gregory XI back from France to Rome Carter-Waren said, “Women are stronger than we think we are. Catherine had the courage to speak truth to power at a very different time.” Use of library meeting rooms does not imply library endorsement of the aims, policies or activities of any group using the room. The program is embraced by government, law enforcement and businesses in Martin County. For more information, visit www. charactercounts.net or call (772) 283-4800, Ext. 234. Joe Kordick was a retired Ford Executive who moved to Florida. He once saw a documentary on CHARACTER COUNTS! felt it would be a good program to bring
to Martin County and since he was retired, he would devote time to the efforts. He met with key stakeholders such as the Superintendent Sara Wilcox, the City of Stuart Mayor Sue Hershey, Judge Larry Schack and others to pitch his idea. All agreed it would be a valuable asset to the young people and families of Martin County. 20 years ago, Mr. Kordick not only helped
to start a character education program, but he put resources behind it by pledging to recognize graduating seniors who exemplified the six pillars of character, with a monetary award. The following are the public remarks made by Robyn Vanover, certified prevention specialist, Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support district contact and

Master Gardeners volunteer to provide gardening advice and answer the public’s garden questions at the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences Extension Office Help Desk, assist with Florida Yards and Neighborhoods Programs, and volunteer at the annual Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival. Additionally, the organization sponsors a quarterly lecture series at the Blake Library and participates annually with a booth at the Martin County Fair. However, Martin County Master Gardeners are not all work and no play. A dedicated committee makes sure there is plenty of opportunity for fun as well, with well-planned field trips to gardens as distant as Gainesville and as close as local backyards, an annual awards ceremony and a picnic that offers an opportunity to celebrate their successes and let loose the inner plant lover. From the humble beginnings of the first Master Gardening class in 1984, the organization now stands strong with more than 100 volunteers, who, last year interacted with approximately 17,000 local gardening aficiona-

seedlings and 200 native trees. On June 28, the public is invited to “Taste of The Tropics” at the Blake Library, where they may learn about (and taste) hundreds of tropical fruits. The event generally includes hourly educational seminars, and is an opportunity to purchase a wide variety of mango, banana, and other tropical trees/bushes suitable for back yard nurseries. Every year, scholarships are awarded to Martin County residents who are planning to or who are majoring in horticultural or landscape sciences, with $4,500 given annually to selected students for college tuition. The Master Gardeners’ only fund raising event is their annual plant sale. In 2014, that plant sale will occur on April 12 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the University of Florida’s Extension Martin County office, located at 2614 S.E. Dixie Highway in Stuart. All of the plants that are sold at the plant sale are grown throughout the year by Martin County Master Gardeners in a shade house that is located on the Extension Office property, adjacent to the fairgrounds. It is not easy to become a Master Gardener, but it is well worth the effort to take advantage of the camaraderie of the group and

dos. Volunteer hours logged by the Martin County Master Gardeners in 2013 are valued at a quarter of a million dollars by the University of Florida. Celebrations started with the regular monthly meeting on Jan. 9, where, undaunted by torrential rains, more than 50 members were regaled with a reminiscent presentation that included highlights from 1984 through the present. Thirty years is a milestone, and those celebrations will continue throughout the year. The public is welcome to help the organization celebrate by participating in one of the many events sponsored this year, or by simply stopping by the University of Florida Extension Martin County office help desk for answers to gardening questions. Each Arbor Day (in January), the Martin County Master Gardeners hold a tree giveaway, thanks to contributions from a local donor, Val Martin of Florida Classics Library. The public is invited to check in at educational tables to learn about pruning, fertilizing and other captivating gardening information. In return, they receive a free tree. At this year’s event, the Master Gardeners partnered again with Martin, as well as the University of Florida’s Florida Yards and Neighborhoods agent, Fred Burkey, and gave away more than 150 pine

MASTERS from page B10 reap the tremendous amount of knowledge that is imparted. There is an application process and participants attend 11 weeks of classes, which include participation in a number of special projects. Annual goals are set by the University of Florida for each member to complete a minimum number of volunteer and education hours once the certification has been obtained. Of course, the Martin County Master Gardeners are high achievers and are not daunted by these goals. Anyone interested in becoming a Martin County Master Gardener should contact Yvette Goodiel, UF/IFAS Extension Martin County Agent at (772) 288-5654 or email her at goodiel@ufl.edu. An open application period will be announced in the summer of 2014, for the fall 2014 training class, which is scheduled to begin in September. The UF/ IFAS Extension Martin County office is located at 2614 S.E. Dixie Highway, Stuart.

IS ALL ABOARD FLORIDA 100% PRIVATELY FUNDED? NO All Aboard Florida applied for a federally guaranteed loan (RRIF) from the Federal Railroad Administration in March 2013. This is the same type of financing scheme that was behind the housing finance crisis that came tumbling down in 2008. Taxpayers would be left holding the bag when the RRIF loan goes into default. We ask if Amtrak is running just four trains per day from Miami to Orlando, how can All Aboard Florida justify 32 trips? How can this be viable? “No privately run train offering passenger service has operated successfully since the automobile became the main choice of travelers. Government typically helps pay for mass-transit systems because they are so expensive to build and operate.” - Orlando Sentinel, March 18, 2013 Why has Senator Brandes filed SB 642 bill on January 15, 2014 repealing the authority of the Auditor General to conduct audits of transportation corporations authorized under the Florida Transportation Corporation Act? If AAF is using taxpayer’s money for a loan, shouldn’t they be audited??? Is this a money grab from taxpayers?
Transportation Corporation Act General Bill
by Brandes Florida Transportation Corporation Act: Repealing a provision relating to the authority of the Auditor General to conduct audits of transportation corporations authorized under the Florida Transportation Corporation Act; repealing a provision relating to the type, structure, and income of an authorized transportation corporation; repealing a provision relating to the contract between the Department of Transportation and an authorized transportation corporation; repealing a provision relating to the board of directors and advisory directors of an authorized transportation corporation, etc.

WHAT IS ALL ABOARD FLORIDA? THIRTY-TWO passenger trains traveling daily from Miami to Orlando, through our towns, between 7:00 a.m.—11:00 p.m. There are no scheduled stops between West Palm Beach and Orlando! All Aboard Florida (AAF) will simply pass through our towns 32 times per day! Expect traffic congestion, noise pollution, as well as property values and access to the ocean from the west side of the bridge to be severely impacted.
