Commander Frank Maitland said the post draws veterans from Tradition, St. Lucie West, and other parts of Martin and St. Lucie counties. “I used to be in (American Legion) Post 62, the Stuart post,” Maitland said. “They moved to

Late last year the United States Tennis Association announced that the club would again host a women’s $25,000 pro-circuit tourney. Events will span from Jan. 12 to 19. The club already had a qualifying tournament many local hopefuls played a couple weeks back. “We had 32 players in that one,” Owen said.

Among them were Korina Neveux, Palm City. Korina said she didn’t fare well against some strong local competitors. “Actually, I just got back from injuries, so it was hard for me to get back,” she said. She’s heading to Mexico soon for more tournament play. Korina has played some pro tournaments, but because she’s not

taken winnings is considered amateur. She plans to watch the Challenger and meet some tennis pals. “I have a lot of friends who are pro,” Korina said. “I’ll go there and watch them play and support them.” Mari Osaka took top spot in the

Palm City woman named academic dean Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — Susan Dennett, the new academic dean at Northwood University in West Palm Beach, has worked in human resources in her native England and in the United States. She and her husband, Lans, tennis pro at Sailfish Point, live in Palm City, although the two dated long-distance for several years before Susan came to the United States 17 years ago. Both Lans and Susan Dennett are certified tennis pros, but Susan Dennett’s focus has been on her business career. She has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Oakland University in Michigan, a master’s in human resources development/adult education from Florida State, and has just defended her doctoral dissertation on educational leadership at Florida Atlantic University. Her professional experience includes stints at Lionel Trains and QVC. She also ran a successful business providing imported goods from England for corporate

gift baskets. In 2009, Dennett joined Northwood as an adjunct professor of human resource management. Her recent promotion to dean puts her exactly where she wants to be. “I’m in my dream job,” she said. “All my experience has led me to this job. The students are a breath of fresh air and high-energy.” Northwood University’s focus is business and its student body reflects the world. “One-third of our students are international,” Dennett said. “I feel I’m in a global community. I love that. We have students from England, China, Sweden, Germany and the Philippines. We share stories. It’s wonderful for our American students, too. We’re small and we really get to know our students. The students are friendly and we know all the faculty by name. I feel safe. It’s a lovely feeling.” Dennett said that Northwood’s emphasis is on the practical as well as the theoretical. Graduates often start their own businesses or go to work in management positions. “You can learn theory,” she

Susan Dennett said. “You can learn from people who have worked in business. We look to people who have had experience. Professors share what they did. We encourage case studies. Students have such exciting internships, with the opportunity to study abroad. It’s such an exciting time to be in college.” Dennett said that learning about the real world of business is about more than financial success. “In the classroom, we encourage integrity and treating everyone

with respect,” she said. “We promote kindness and respect. Critical thinking is really important. It’s looking beyond the textbooks. Students and faculty get free subscriptions to The Wall Street Journal. We use everyday topics and incorporate it with what’s’ going on in everyday life. Students are encouraged to think about how what’s going on in Ukraine is affecting us and to make assessments. There is a lot of essay writing and critical thinking assessment. We try to incorporate a lot of different teaching and assessment methods in the curriculum.” Dennett said the small class size enables students and faculty to interact. “Our classrooms are smaller,” she said. “I had 100 (students) when I went to college. Here it’s 12-15. The maximum is 40. The class size is small, but it’s large enough for discussion. We’re able to know the students and they have a lot of active learning experiences.” Dennett taught one class last semester, but has found that she does not have time to teach on a

Flooring sales get to the bottom of home sales recovery Patrick McCallister Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — The home market is bouncing back, and there’s no more certain sign of that than strong flooring sales. “I’ve already done more this January than all of last January,” Bob Cummings, co-owner of Flooring USA, said. Bob and Debra Cummings started the Stuart store back in 1992. Cummings said that home sales aren’t the only reason his are up. “It’s home sales first and foremost,” Cummings said. “That’s come back in a big way. People are changing houses, and changing flooring.” However, “A lot of people have been waiting (to invest in their homes) four or five years,” he said. “They like their homes and they’re saying, ‘We’re going to put some new flooring in.’ With home sales coming back up, home prices are coming back up. They’re not afraid to put money into their houses.”

Indeed, 2013 saw the first increase in Martin County’s real estate values in several years, Martin County property appraiser Laurel Kelly reported last July. “This is the first year we’ve seen an increase since 2007,” she said in a 2013 interview. Last summer Kelly’s office released the property-value report taxing authorities, such as the Martin County School Board, use to set ad valorem tax rates and forge budgets for fiscal year 20132014. The year before she reported that Martin’s taxable value was about $16.9 billion. Last year she reported that it’s $17.1 billion. A slight increase — about .88 percent — but an increase that’s showing in the markets. “Business is very good,” Cummings said. “We felt the meltdown, our most recent economic downturn.” He later added, “We’re experiencing a good return to business. I have a very positive outlook we’re going to have a great year.” Additionally, he said increasing consumer curiosity and savvy

about flooring is helping his business. Cummings said many are increasingly aware that flooring sets a foundation to a home’s feel. “It does start with the floors,”

Cummings said. “A new floor can completely change the personality of a home. It can change the

qualifier. Owen said there are several local players that the tennis world might soon be watching with much keener interest, including Martin County’s Stella Fedele. “She’s one of the top high school players,” Owen said. The club hopes events such as the Challenger helps the Treasure Coast get a tennis boost. “Tennis in this area is now in the up-and-coming,” Owen said. “It’s not a tennis community yet, but I’m working on it. We have several clubs in the area doing a great job promoting the sport, not just me.” About 100 rising tennis pros gathered for world-class competition at the premier Tesoro Challenger last year. The outdoor clay-court event was the second for the United States Tennis Association Pro Circuit women’s 2013 season. “Last year, we had 3,000 to 4,000 spectators,” Owen said. “This year, we’re aiming for 5,000 or more. We’re getting the community involved.” In singles competitions last year, Canadian Sharon Fichman took top spot over Slovenian Tadeja Majeric in finals, posting a 6-3, 6-2 victory. In doubles, Russian Angelina Gabueva teamed up with American Allie Will to shut down Argentinean Florencia Molinero and Venezuelan Adriana Perez. The real winner was the Trea-

sure Coast, Owen said. It got a big economic boost from the competition, along with a good bite of international tennis. “Last year, the (Tesoro) winner went all the way to the U.S. Open,” Owen said. “Now (locals) have ties to these players. We like to think that the road to the U.S. Open starts at Tesoro.” Owen said the Challenger drew folks from all over Florida. “It definitely made a big impact in the area,” he said. “People had to stay in the hotels, so a lot of room nights. They had to get cars, and eat, and go shopping. Every vendor in the community benefited from this event.” The Challenger also benefits area animals. Some proceeds will go to the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast. “Last year we did around $9,000, $10,000 for them,” Owen said. He added, “We have dogs on-site during the tournament you can adopt. I’m a big animal lover.” Locals tennis aficionados will take the court for their own exciting tourney action Feb. 22 to 23. That’ll be the annual Sinkula Wealth Management Aces for Independence. “Local amateurs can play on this, all levels,” Owen said. That tourney will benefit the Foundation Fighting Blindness. For more about the tourneys, visit tesorochallenger.com and racquetclubtesoro.com. The club is at 199 S.E. Via Tesoro Blvd, Port St. Lucie.

or the third consecutive year, Governor Rick Scott is working to make Florida more competitive through targeted tax and fee reductions. The governor’s latest tax savings proposal eliminates a 2009 increase in motorist fees that were approved when Charlie Crist was governor. As a part of Governor Scott’s “It’s Your Money” $500 million tax relief effort, Governor Scott recently called on state legislators to reduce auto registration fees by $401 million next year. Florida’s 18 million registered vehicles, which include vehicles operated by businesses, will see a savings. This includes: • 13 million cars and trucks, many of which are used by small businesses • 2.6 million fleet vehicles. Most motorists would receive a $25 fee reduction. Looking ahead at Florida’s economic future, it’s clear Florida is making significant strides. Unemployment figures are down, our population is growing, nearly 500 people a day are moving into our state, education reform seems to

Joe Catrambone be working and Florida’s business climate is improving. We agree with the Florida Chamber believing in a simple, fair and globally competitive tax structure. Further, we believe that Florida can and should do better by establishing a smarter tax structure that will help put money back into the hands of taxpayers. We offer congratulations to Governor Scott for working to relieve Florida’s families and job creators through targeted tax reforms. We believe for Florida to be more competitive, Florida should continue its efforts to secure the future through additional tax re-

form opportunities, including: • Phasing out taxes on commercial property leases • Lowering Florida’s communications services tax • Closing the Internet sales tax loophole. Did you know 34 of the top 50 jobs this year were in STEM-related, science, technology, engineering and math? Looking toward the future they will far exceed non-STEM jobs. Currently, only one-third of bachelor’s degrees earned in the U.S. are STEM field, compared to 53 percent in China and 63 percent in Japan. Incidentally, there are a growing number of our STEM degrees awarded to foreign students that often return home, taking their talents and skills with them. Here are a few engineering jobs and their projected 2020 growth rates: • Petroleum engineers — 17 percent • Civil engineers — 19 percent • Environmental engineers — 22 percent • Biomedical engineers — 62 percent Joe Catrambone is president and CEO of the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce.

POST from page 1 south Stuart. (Joe Anderson, Palm City) who was in 62 said, ‘You know a lot of guys don’t want to go all the way to south Stuart.” In 2010, Post 62 moved from meeting at the Stuart Veterans of Foreign Wars’ facility, 2464 S.E. Veterans Ave. It headed to new digs at 6412 S.E. Federal Highway. The separation is five miles, but those are urbanized miles with traffic, lights and inconvenience for many from Palm City and other parts. Post 399 is meeting at the Stuart Veterans of Foreign Wars now. The meetings are on the fourth Wednesday of every month at 7 p.m. “When 399 got going, I stepped into commander off the bat,” Maitland said. Maitland said the post has about 35 members. “We’re looking at 300, 400,” he said. “There’re a lot of vets in Palm City.” In addition to leading 399, Maitland is commander of the legion’s District 11, which includes 22 posts in Okeechobee, Martin and Palm Beach counties. He’s also the vice chairman of Veterans Council of Martin County. His wife, Jo Ann, is president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 399, among many other credits in the local veterans’ community. The two are a bit of a veterans power couple. Maitland said the post 399’s small size gives aspiring veterans leaders an unusual opportunity to develop and test their mettle. He said the post is regularly discussing growth ideas and looking for go-getters who’ll lead the way. Maitland said the post is particularly interested in having a younger-than-average median age than most. “That’s what we’re looking for,” he said. “We’re trying to get the kids that are coming back from

Reliable transportation

Afghanistan to join, to sign up. We need these younger guys to bring newer blood in there, newer ideas.” The commander said the post has already made a decision that when it starts growing its ranks and getting a facility of its own, it won’t serve alcohol in dim light. “We don’t want to do that,” Maitland said. “We don’t want that image. We want families to be able to come in and have fun. Not the old smoke-filled bar to buy cheap drinks.” The post has a demographic tide to swim against. Nationally, many veterans organizations have famously been struggling to keep up membership in the last couple decades. For some, the idea of growing seems out of reach. There’s a reason for that. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, there are about 22.7 million military veterans living in the U.S. As military equipment improved and accompanying jobs become more specialized, the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard and National Guard needed ever fewer members. By 2035, the number of veterans is expected to be about 14 million. From 2000 to 2010, there was about a 15 percent decrease in veterans as older ones died, but weren’t being replaced with as many younger ones. Florida lost somewhere between 11 to 19 percent of its veteran population during those years. However, it remains one of only four states with more than 1 million veterans, according to the Florida Department of Veterans Affairs — which is a state agency separate from the federal VA. “If you’re a veteran with an honorable discharge, come on in,” Maitland said. “We want to talk to you.” To find out more, visit facebook. com/AmericanLegionPost399PalmCityFl.

Woman’s Club helps victims of domestic violence Patrick McCallister Staff writer

MARTIN COUNTY — Seeking domestic-abuse survivors heading to school. The Woman’s Club of Stuart has $2,500 scholarships for survivors of domestic abuse who

are advancing their educations. They’ll be awarded in May. “(Education) is part of our mission statement, and it’s our primary mission for the year,” Francine Banasiak, public relations director, said. “Most of the money we raise goes toward education. A lot of it goes to scholarships locally.”

Backyard Birding We have all you need to make Backyard Birding a family adventure!

The Success for Survivors Scholarship is $2,500. Candidates must be in or have plans to attend accredited public or private post-secondary schools, such as Indian River State College. Additionally, candidates must be citizens or legal residents of the U.S., and get the recommendation of domestic-abuse prevention agencies, mental-health professionals, or social workers. The local scholarships are part of a General Federation of Women’s Clubs national program. The program aims to reduce one of the recognized contributors to chronic domestic abuse: lack of education and the accompanying dearth of employment prospects. Real or imagined economic necessity is a frequent reason people get into, or remain in, relationships marked by domestic abuse. “We’ll be accepting applications to the end of January,” Banasiak said. “At that time, we’ll start reviewing them.” The club is unsure how many women it’ll be able to award scholarships to. “The exact amount they don’t know at this time,” Banasiak said. “We’re still in the process of raising monies.” According to the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence,

domestic abuse takes many forms, ranging from economic, verbal and emotional to physical. What all domestic abuse has in common is control. “It is a pattern of controlling behaviors — violence or threats of violence — that one person uses to establish power over an intimate partner in order to control that partner’s actions and activities,” reads the coalition’s website, fcadv.org. The Stuart club will have its next fundraiser next month. That’s the Harbour Bay Fashion Show, “All That Jazz.” That’ll be on Feb. 8, starting at 11 a.m., and will feature drinks and a fashion show. It’ll be at Harbour Bay Plaza, 3766 S.E. Ocean Blvd, Sewall’s Point. That’s $12. Then — “Sip n Shop will be March 21,” Banasiak said. “It’s going to be at (St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Stuart). It’s a combination of enjoying cocktails and hors d’oeuvres while shopping.” The church is at 623 S.E. Ocean Blvd. Sip n Shop will be from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Advance tickets are $30. At the door they’ll be $35. To find out more about the club, visit womansclubofstuart.com.

he study, titled “Do Nice Guys — and Gals — Really Finish Last?” used survey data to examine “agreeableness” and found that men who disagreed far greater make 18 percent — or $9,772 annually — more in salary than those who agree. The salary disparity is far less among women, with disagreeable females making 5 percent or $1,828 than those who agree more. Cornell professor Beth A. Livingston, who co-authored the study with Timothy A. Judge of the University of Notre Dame and Charlice Hurst of the University of Western Ontario, told the Wall Street Journal, “Nice guys are getting the shaft.” “‘The problem is, many managers often don’t realize they reward disagreeableness,” Livingston added. “You can say this is what you value as a company, but your compensation system may not really reflect that, especially if you leave compensation decisions to individual managers.’ “ I can only think of two things when I read such information. First, I now realize that some of the people that I have worked with through the years weren’t horses rear-ends, they were just trying to provide better for their families! The other thought that comes to mind is “Hey, I’m not being grouchy, I’m just trying to up my bottom line.” Kidding aside, what can we learn from such data as this? First, we can see that human nature can rule in a workplace over good business practices at any given moment. If you are a manager and have a “pushover” of an employee that you know is non-confrontational, it is easier to be stern with them and easier to not cater to their desires because of their demeanor. On the other hand, if you have to confront the disagreeable employee on their performance or salary, you are more likely to be resistant to being as stern or less likely to want

Bill Hughes to give them bad news about a salary freeze or lesser raise than others. Also, the more confrontational employee is more likely to carry their grievances back to you or up the chain of command and can most likely get someone to listen to their case and give in to their bad behavior. Good old gender stereotypes are also at play in this study, it was determined. A male who is more agreeable does not conform to expected masculine behavior and may be considered as less assertive and therefore passed over when it comes to salary increases and promotional advances. Oldschool methods of management and corporate “good old boy” networks feed these situations where the lion who roars the loudest gets the most attention. If you aren’t able to “man-up,” you certainly cannot manage a portion of the business. This disagreeable nature and rudeness, however, is not a benefit to an employer or to a customer base. Incivility at work can destroy the culture of workplace. Increased turnover, poor training, poor public image and lack of return business can haunt a workplace where incivility reigns. People just are not naturally attracted to mean people. Patients will definitely find somewhere else to go if they see a workplace where employees are treated badly or where the bad attitudes of management trickle down to staff. Employees entering the hostile environment will quickly

Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 8 p.m. Take a trip to the dark side of the moon when The Machine Performs Pink Floyd. To reprise last year’s sold-out performance, the most sought-after Pink Floyd tribute band returns to perform the English rock band’s most groundbreaking and influential music from all 16 albums. With 20 years of experience under their belt, The Machine can proudly claim to offer one of the last remaining nearly authentic experiences of a live Pink Floyd concert. Once merely a tribute band, the quartet has begun to attract a large and loyal fan following. The group has released several CDs and DVDs, including the 2006 release, Unplugged; containing a rare acoustic performance of obscure solo material from founding Pink Floyd member Syd Barret at New York City’s B.B. King’s, as well as deep cuts from the early albums. Representing more than just a simple revival of the Pink Floyd legacy, The Machine has become a force in itself, not to be reckoned with and not to be missed.

Board of County Commissioners. The Board of County Commissioners approved $55,000 in funding and additional funding will come from Healthy Start and the Children’s Services Council of Martin County and United Way of Martin County will be entertaining requests in their next funding cycles. “Our goal is to offer the services expectant mothers need to ensure their well-being and the health of their child,” said Scott Berry, executive director of the Martin County Healthy Start Coalition. “By taking preventative action, educating women and providing them with the services they can use, we hope to help lower the BMI levels among expectant mothers. That will lead to healthier pregnancies and healthier babies.” All pregnant women with a BMI of 25 or higher on the Healthy Start Risk Screen will be referred to a registered dietitian. The dietitian will calculate caloric need of the individual, provide nutrition prescriptions and nutritional education and coordinate with the woman’s healthcare provider to monitor pregnancy weight gain and ensure that it is within acceptable limits. Currently, low-income, expectant mothers, who are enrolled in the Women, Infants and Children program are offered guidance regarding food and nutrition during their pregnancy. This represents only 20 percent of the overall number of pregnant women with elevated BMIs in Martin County. The new dietitian service will be the first of its kind in Martin County that is available to all mothers, regardless of their income level. The program will

Expectant mothers in Martin County encouraged to have healthy pregnancies through new outreach program MARTIN COUNTY — Since it formed in 1993, Martin County Healthy Start has tackled nearly every issue regarding the health of expectant mothers and their newborns. By allocating resources towards outreach and intervention, Martin County Health Start has helped to reduce the number of babies born at a low birth-weight and reduce the infant mortality rate in our community. While these successes are cause for celebration, the organization has identified an alarming trend in the number of expectant mothers who are clinically overweight or obese at the time of their first prenatal appointment. In 2012, 47 percent of pregnant women throughout Martin County had elevated Body Mass Index which is a measure of a person’s body fat based on their height and weight. The percentage of women in Martin County with elevated BMI is higher than the Florida average of 44 percent. Research has shown that women who are overweight or obese during pregnancy are at a higher level of risk for gestational diabetes or hypertension, which increases risk for premature birth, low birth weight, or event infant death. In an effort to decrease the number of pregnant women with a higher than average BMI, the Healthy Start Coalition is adding a registered dietitian to the range of services it offers. Set to start in 2014, the dietitian will provide expectant mothers with the guidance, education and skills they need to ensure that they have a healthy pregnancy. This new program has received widespread support along with funding from the Martin County

be searching for other places to work once they realize the uncivil nature of the workplace. We should always remember that people who are treated badly or perceive poor treatment will most likely tell tenfold the number of people that a satisfied, well-treated person will. Many of life’s choices and priorities come down to a clear choice. It seems this study brings out a great hidden element. If you are for yourself and your monetary future, be the grouch that will bring the bucks home to you. If you are for others and realize that the world is more than the money you make and advancing yourself, be agreeable, be the person people want to be around, and be the person who can help your workplace prosper.

An Acoustic Evening with Keb’ Mo’ Tuesday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. Join singer-songwriter, guitarist and three-time Grammy winner Keb’ Mo’ is an intimate acoustic performance. His music is a living link to the seminal Delta blues that traveled up the Mississippi River and across the expanse of America — informing all of its musical roots — before evolving into a universally celebrated art form. His distinctive sound embraces multiple eras and genres, including pop, soul, folk and jazz as well as the singer-songwriter movement. For Keb’ Mo’, the common bond between these influences is the underlying storytelling ethic, the power of song to convey human experience and emotional weight. Keb’ Mo’ promises to get down with The Lyric this January with his style of Delta Blues as a modern take on a classic music style. “The Reflection” is the first new studio album by Keb’ Mo’ since Suitcase in 2006 earned a sixth Grammy nomination. These 12 songs are the product of an important period of personal and professional growth for the artist formerly known as Kevin Moore. In that time, he started a new family; moved from Los Angeles to Nashville; built a state–of–the–art home studio, and founded his own label, Yolabelle International, distributed by Ryko and the Warner Music Group. But “The Reflection” is not, in essence, a blues album. In sound and spirit, it’s closer to the work of African–American “folk soul” singer/songwriters like Bill Withers, Bobby Womack, and Terry Callier.

personality of a room. There’s not an easier way to change the personality of a room (than changing flooring).” Flooring USA is an Abby Design Center. Cummings said that the days of carpet stores with a relatively small product selection are gone. Today’s customers, he said, want a wide range of options, but sometimes get a bit overwhelmed by the choices. After all, quality flooring is likely to outlast a home owner. It’s a big decision. “I always tell my customers that selecting floor coverings is a process and we’ll help you through the process,” Cummings said. “There’s a lot of moving parts when you’re selecting floor covering. It does affect your indoor environment.”

Veteran power couple

Patrick McCallister For Veteran voice

patrick.mccallister@yahoo.com

There are veterans’ leaders, and there’s Martin County couple Frank and Jo Ann Maitland. They’re among a seemingly unusual sort. They’re something of a veterans’ power couple. Jo Ann joined an unenviable sorority in 2002. Her son, Richard “Buck” Buckingham Hubbell III, went for a motorcycle ride to work off some post-mission adrenalin not long after calling his mother. The fatigued young man crashed and died. Jo Ann is now president of the American Gold Star Mothers Treasure Coast Chapter, which she helped to start. “I pretty much started out with the (Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary) in Stuart,” Jo Ann said. “I started there to learn the basics of veterans organizations.” Additionally, Jo Ann is the president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 399, Palm City. FIREFLY from page 21 The Firefly Group’s next decade of service. “Ten years ago, my family encouraged me to start my own consulting firm and it’s been an incredibly exciting and fulfilling journey,” said Ranieri. “Firefly has grown steadily over the years, and much of our success is attributed to the outstanding work of our employees who we affectionately call ‘fireflies.’ We are delighted to mark our 10-year anniversary with the addition of Wendy, Allison and Jessica and look forward to integrating each of their unique skills and back-

grounds to achieve even greater results for our clients and community.” New to the Treasure Coast, Wendy Puz is one of The Firefly Group’s public relations and marketing executives. Puz is responsible for a variety of client services including project management, public relations strategy, community relations, event management, marketing and media relations. “It’s exciting to join a firm that is so well-respected in the community and to be able to work with a team of creative, passionate professionals. Allison Klempert, born and raised in Stuart, has flown back to Firefly’s jar where she previously interned in 2012. A graduate of South Fork High School, Klempert earned her bachelor’s degree in advertising at the University of Florida. Her experience working for the Independent Florida Alligator Newspaper, a local tourism organization and a non-profit organization that helps families facing cancer, provides a solid foundation for her role as junior account executive — also known as Firefly’s ”Inspiration Igniter.” “It’s been wonderful being welcomed back to Firefly. I learned so much during my internship and now this is a great opportunity to put everything into action while continuing to grow and glow,” said Klempert. Klempert is responsible for a variety of client services with a focus on digital media, media relations and event logistics. marketing. She has a real estate background, having worked for a local real estate broker for 10 years. Waugaman also has extensive experience working with local nonprofit organizations, including a decade as the administrative coordinator for a local environmental group. “My interest in advocating for causes fuels the work I do for Firefly’s clients. Helping organizations accomplish their goals is my passion,” said Waugaman. In this position, Waugaman is responsible for assisting clients with event management and marketing, media relations, community outreach and social media. COUPLE from page 19 is commander of that post. Jo Ann’s from a military family, the Churchills, so she always felt a deep connection with the armed forces. Her father was a major who served in the 4th Armored Division in World War II. Her brothers, Thomas and Richard, served in the Navy and Army, respectively. Richard also did some time in the Marine Corps Reserves. Indeed, family and the military runs so deep in their veins, Frank and Jo Ann married on Nov. 10th, 2001, just so it would be on the USMC’s founding anniversary. They did this to honor Richard’s service. Jo Ann might have never worn a uniform, but she learned much about the power of camaraderie. “I don’t accomplish anything alone,” she said in a post-interview email. “It takes the wonderful group of women I work with to complete the goals and missions of both the American Legion Auxiliary, and American Gold Star Mothers.” Frank was in the Navy from 1968 to 1972. He went on to be a fireman in Massachusetts from ‘77 to 2000. His union met at an American Legion. As a show of solidarity and gratitude, he

joined the veterans group. But, like most if not all submariners and firefighters, Frank’s not a guy who can just sit back for the ride. “On a submarine you have to know every system on that boat inside and out,” Frank said. “If something happens, you have to know how to fix it. We’re all sort of alpha personalities, if you know what I mean. We all wanted to know how everything worked.” And, he said, on a sub or at a fire, everyone has to be ready to take command at any moment. So, Frank wasn’t content with just going to veterans’ meetings. He had to lead. “You can’t be a leader in all of (the veterans’ organizations),” he said. “Your plate gets too full and you’re diluted. I chose the Legion because I really like them.” In addition to leading 399, Frank’s the commander of the legion’s District 11, which includes 22 posts in Okeechobee, Martin and Palm Beach counties. He’s also the vice chairman of Veterans Council of Martin County. “When 399 got going, I stepped into commander off the bat,” Frank said. That young post has about 35 members now. Frank is aiming to

STUART — The Martin County Library System has some programs scheduled for January and the rest of the season that promise high-quality entertainment and information at no charge. It doesn’t get better than that. On Jan. 11 at 3 p.m., the Barefoot Movement will perform at the Robert Morgade Library in Stuart as part of the Journey Stories Concert Series. No tickets or reservations are required. The Barefoot Movement is an Americana/folk quartet from Tennessee. They perform original and traditional old-time string music. The group’s unusual name comes from singer and fiddler Noah Wall’s penchant for removing her shoes during shows to evoke a down-home feeling. The group consists of Wall, guitarist Alex Conerly, mandolinist Tommy Norris and bass player Hasee Ciaccio Most of the lyric are written by Wall. The group’s debut album, “Footwork,” was released in 2011 and they have a new album this year. They have performed or opened for artists including Ricky Skaggs, Peter Rowan, Jim Lauderdale and Dale Ann Bradley. Also on Jan. 11, the Treasure Coast Classical Guitar Society presents a concert with Zachary Johnson at the Blake Library at

Florida Oceanographic’s Coastal Lecture Series starts Jan. 13 FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY — The area’s leading coastal experts will converge at the Blake Library in Stuart for a very special lecture series. Following the Indian River Lagoon’s “Lost Summer,” these presentations are more timely and topical than ever, bringing increased awareness and education to some very important and fascinating subjects. Florida Oceanographic Society’s Coastal Lecture Series, hosted by the Martin County Library System will take place on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. at the Blake Library, John F. Armstrong Wing, 2351 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart. The series is open to the public and admission is free. The first lecture will take place on Jan. 13 and features Mark Perry, executive director of Florida Oceanographic Society. Perry’s presentation, “Celebrating 50 Years of Environmental Stewardship,” includes an array of historical photographs and personal

anecdotes. His father, Clifton Perry, helped establish the organization in 1964 and Mark Perry was hired as its first paid employee in 1978. FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

Friday, Jan. 10 Matinee 4 p.m. ; pre-concert lecture starts at 3:10 p.m. Twilight 8 p.m., pre-concert lecture starts at 7:10 p.m. Program: Fanny Mendelssohn, Overture Garth Neustadter, “World Premiere” The Rappaport Prize for Music Composition Alberto Ginastera, Variaciones Concertantes George Gounod, Symphony No. 1 in D Now in its 24th season, the Atlantic Classical Orchestra has developed a reputation as a world–class performing arts organization dedicated to presenting performances of both orchestral and chamber music in the rapidly growing urban communities on Florida’s eastern seaboard north of Miami. While its core repertory is based in the late 18th and early 19th century, the orchestra has developed an active commit-

ment to the rediscovery of much unjustly neglected music from the Romantic era, written for an orchestra of classical proportions alongside championing the best and most accessible of contemporary music with a special emphasis on the younger generation of American composers. The Atlantic Classical Orchestra is composed of members drawn not only from Florida’s principal musical organizations, but also major orchestras throughout the U.S. The orchestra’s artistic vision, high caliber of playing and variety of works performed have resulted in such acclaim by the press as, “What a remarkable group the Atlantic Classical Orchestra has become … under Grammy- nominated music director, Stewart Robertson, it has become an ambitious and poised group that could claim an honored place in even the most culturally rich communities.” — Palm Beach Post
