Hard work key to business success St. Lucie Battery & Tire has eight veterans currently on staff, and inviting more to apply Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

FORT PIERCE — Joey Miller, the founder of St. Lucie Battery & Tire, was only 5 when his family moved from Flatbush, Brooklyn to Fort Pierce. They came, as so many did, for a warmer climate. Miller’s father began selling eggs at 5500 Orange Ave. His son took over the small grocery business and a few years later, in 1967, began repairing batteries, “It was a grocery store that sold used batteries and eggs,” Miller said. “Back then, it was dead in the summer time. I had the opportunity to get into something year-round to supplement the farming. If you listen to your customer, they’ll tell you when and where to grow. It evolved from where it was to where it is.” Today, St. Lucie Battery & Tires is a business that recently opened its 13th store, has more than 140 employees and was ranked in the top 100 independent U.S. tire retailers by Tire Business Magazine. The company operates in St. Lucie, Martin, Indian

Miller said that the path to success wasn’t an easy one. “It was about servicing the customer and a lot of hard work. I never went to college, and I felt like if I wanted to be successful, I had to outperform my competition. I always tried to treat every customer like I’d want to be treated and give every customer a dollar’s worth of value for a dollar.” Nowadays, Miller’s son, Doug, is the company president and runs the business on a day-to day basis. His other son, Mickey, is a veteran of Desert Storm, and the company is trying to hire more veterans. Right now, they employ eight, but Joey Miller would like that number to grow. “I’m very proud to be an American,” he said. “I think the people need to take their hats off to the people that serve this country. That’s why we’re free. When they come back, they often get overlooked. We’re working hard (to

$100,000 goal surpassed thanks to the community for supporting Helping People Succeed in Ross Campaign Challenge FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

Helping People Succeed and the Richard and Yvonne Ross Charitable Foundation offer thanks to the local community for meeting a $100,000 challenge to help fund programs and direct services at Helping People Succeed. The campaign kicked off on Nov. 1 with a challenge from Richard and Yvonne Ross to match their $50,000 gift with $50,000 of community support to benefit Helping People Succeed. At the end of 2013, the deadline for the challenge, the campaign had $53,000 contributed by the board of directors and general public, which succeeded in the receipt of the $50,000 promised by the Richard and Yvonne Ross Charitable Foundation. In total, more than $100,000 was raised. “There is no greater satisfaction than to help those who cannot always help themselves. We are so proud to be a part of this oppor-

tunity to bring awareness to the community about Helping People Succeed and its mission toward helping young and old to achieve their goals of independence and a contribution to their community,” said Rich and Yvonne Ross. Ross served on the board of trustees for the Helping People Succeed Foundation for 12 years. He is the owner of Ross Mixing, a worldwide company with a location in Port St. Lucie and owns Seminole Wind Farms in Palm City, where he raises Paso Fino horses. Helping People Succeed president/CEO Suzy Hutcheson thanked the Ross Charitable Foundation and the community for surpassing the goal and demonstrating support of the many programs Helping People Succeed brings to the community and its 4,500 families who are served.

Yvonne and Richard Ross, left and center, present their contribution of $50,000 from the Richard and Yvonne Ross Charitable Foundation to Helping People Succeed President/CEO Suzy Hutcheson. The Rosses challenged the community to match their contribution with a second $50,000 to benefit the programs and services at Helping People Succeed.

Raising hell over Bible sales I

t’s only $2.16, right? Not worth the fuss, right? Wrong, it’s the principle. Whether or not I think an automatic tax exemption is fair, it exists and stores have no business collecting money for the state when they’re not supposed to. Let’s step back. I went to a (insert the first name of large big box retailer that comes to mind) the other day to buy a Bible. I’d left all mine in DeLand when I moved, and wanted to have a New King James for a regular reader. I ran into an old annoyance — getting charged a sales tax when I buy a Bible. Look it up, Florida Statute 212.06(9). Nope, you ain’t supposed to charge me that tax, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to quietly pay an improper sales tax on a Bible and go my merry way. “The taxes imposed by this chapter do not apply to the use, sale, or distribution of religious publications, bibles, hymn books, prayer books, vestments, altar paraphernalia, sacramental chalices, and like church service and ceremonial raiments and equipment.” Get that? No sales taxes on Bibles. Pretty cut-and-dried. No muddled legislative speak to make it a murky issue. No sales taxes on Bibles. It’s the law. I once stood in a (insert second name of large book retailer that comes to mind) calling the Flor-

ida Department of Revenue, so someone there could explain to the store manager that there are not supposed to be sales taxes charged on Bibles. It’s good to be a reporter with lots of phone numbers. Why all the effort to drive this point home with retailers? Simple. The Bible is the top-selling book in the United States. You get pretty much every large chain and mom-and-pop improperly charging sales taxes on Bibles and Floridians are out probably millions a year. Millions, I bet, if not tens of millions. All made out of $2.16 a clip. Frankly, I think that the salestax exemption is arguably a violation of the Establishment Clause and the Florida Constitution. I’ve gone rounds with state representatives and senators, along with revenue department lawyers, about it. I believe that if

OUR MISSION We are here to provide our readers with completely unbiased news coverage. Fun and entertaining features about the communities in which they live. For our advertising partners we pledge to provide the most complete consultative and marketing programs possible for the best return on their investments.

I’m legally obligated to pay a sales tax on a “Tao Te Ching,” I should also have to pay up on a Bible. But, it’s not retailers’ call. In a country which constitutionally prohibits the government from showing religious preferences, the Bible and other accoutrements of Christianity should enjoy no special treatment or privilege from the legislature. No sales taxes on a Bible, then no sales taxes on a “Dhammapada,” or “Zend Avesta,” or “I Ching,” or, or, or, or. I know that as a practical matter, it’s impossible to say when a text has made the leap from being wonderful words of wisdom to a holy text. The pragmatist in me says the state shouldn’t care, and start charging everyone who buys any book a sales tax that helps maintain the roads they’re trucked on. But, it doesn’t. The “Tao Te Ching” is generally believed to be 2,500 years old. There’s an indisputably religious segment of Taoism in Asia that has been around for thousands of years. Some groups that lay claim to Taoism are recognized as religious organizations by various federal governmental agencies. Does that make the “Tao Te Ching” hierography (sacred writing) on par with the Christian Bible to a secular government, thus deserving an equal tax exemption? I think most would say yes. But, there’s the thorny question of when did the “Tao Te Ching” make that jump from being profound to holy writing? I knew a girl who reads Kahlil Gibran’s “The Prophet” like many do the Bible. Does then that book enter the realm of hierography and deserve an equal sales tax break? Arguably, too, the same law that prohibits sales taxes on Bibles

prohibits them on the “Tao Te Ching.” A lawyer at the Department of Revenue told me that “bibles” is lowercased in the law, meaning I could mail copies of the receipts showing I paid sales taxes along with a letter explaining why the “Tao Te Ching” is a bible, a sourcebook for faith. He said I’d get a refund from the state. I shouldn’t have to go through that trouble if the capital “B” Bible automatically gets an exemption. Oh, wait. In the real world, it doesn’t! Stores still regularly charge the improper tax. I called press folks at (insert first name of large retailer that comes to mind) about paying the sales tax. I told them I was working on a story, not a column, which was true at the time. I got a call back from a spokeswoman. She cheerfully explained that she’d consulted with the corporation’s tax experts. They told her that no taxes were improperly charged on Bibles. I sent her a copy of my receipt, which clearly showed I was charged a sales tax on my $2.16 Bible purchase, and mentioned Florida Statute 212.06(9). Still waiting for word back. The Florida Legislature will never eliminate the Bible sales tax exemption. Imagine trying to run for dog catcher after voting to tax Bibles. As a practical matter, it simply can’t name every example of hierography that exists in legislation. The law’s not going away, and it won’t be made equitable. But, whether you’re a Christian, Buddhist, atheist, or Zoroastrian, next time you go to buy a Bible, please join me in refusing to quietly let stores charge sales taxes on them.

DARCY from page A1 large releases of nutrient-rich water from Lake Okeechobee into the C-44 Canal over the summer is still drowning in controversy. Pollutants in the St. Lucie River, which receives that water, had risen to the level of immediate health hazard that prompted the Martin County Health Department to post warnings against contact with the water. About 80 of the signs were posted around the St. Lucie River in Martin. Tests from river samples showed that microcystis aeruginosa, a type of algae also called cyanobacteria, were releasing toxins harmful to animals and people. The water headed into the Indian River. It was blamed for myriads of ecological problems that prompted the creation of the Florida Senate Select Committee on Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee Basin. But, the corps was in a conundrum. There was a lot of rainwater hitting the ground over the summer. Martin got about 140 percent of its normal rainfall for July. The extra rain added to Lake Okeechobee’s water levels, which stressed the Herbert Hoover Dike. The rain pushed the lake to a vertical datum level of about 16 feet. At 18.5 feet, the probability of a dike breach is

der suggested, it may be the first such law in the nation. Snyder said he took a page from the feds’ playbook and applied it to the state. “The FBI can (charge additional felonies) if you go from one state to another,” he said. State Senator Dorothy Hukill, R-Port Orange, introduced the bill. “Sheriff Snyder contacted me,” she said. “He contacted me and told me how much of a problem it is that these groups are going across county lines to commit felonies.” In December, a Martin County resident left her house for less than an hour, and came home to a burglary in progress. The crime had the signatures of a pillowcase burglary. The last known pillowcase burglary in Martin County before then was in October. Over the last two years, the county has had 108. In that time, 62 pillowcase burglars have been arrested. The city of Deltona is in Hukill’s district. The bedroom community has Interstate 4 and other major roads running to and through it. It frequently experiences spates of burglaries by thieves crossing county lines who work very similarly to South Florida’s pillowcase burglars. She was an easy sell on the proposal. Judiciary Committee, and two subcommittees. The legislative reality in Florida is very few proposed bills get very far, because of the short sessions. However, Hukill said many will likely rally behind the bill, because Snyder is widely respected by legislators and cops. “I called (Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson) when we were going to file the bill,” she said. “He took a look at it.” And liked what he saw. He urged Hukill to file the bill. If the bill becomes statute, the additional felonies traveling criminals face would jack up bonds and penalties. The companion bill in the Florida House is 427. Representative Charles McBurney, Jacksonville, introduced that bill. He was unavailable for comment at press time. The term “pillowcase burglar” is derived from the method of operation. These burglars, who seem to travel primarily from Broward County, typically work an area in small teams. They typically work in the mid- to late-morning hours. One will knock on doors and signal others to where there are no answers. Team members will break into the backs of those houses, grab pillowcases and quickly stuff them with small items. Snyder said alarms or dogs don’t seem to give them pause. Martin County got a scare last year when three approached a Palm City house with a 16-yearold inside. The youth barricaded himself and contacted the Sheriff’s Office, which arrested three in connection with the attempted robbery.

And so it came to pass that a great sadness fell upon the land. For the Great Lords who sat in Washington had caused a snafu to be laid upon the people, to cause them much hardship, pain and suffering. Throughout the Land, there was much wailing and gnashing of teeth. For all believed that all was lost, even unto their Rolls and Mercedes. “Times are Bad” cried the media “ye all are going down the tubes” And Lo the people so hearing did so believe. So they donned sackcloth and ashes and spoke with lowered voices and much wringing of hands. But there was amongst them one named Terry, The Idiot of Diamonds By Terry, who was weak of mind, hard of hearing and dim of sight so that she was not able to see, hear nor understand how bad the times were, so stupid was she. So Terry made herself a shield and emblazoned on it “Business is Good” and bound it to her mantle. that all might look upon it. And as she traveled throughout the land, the people raised their heads and they mocked at her saying “Why do ye wear that sign upon your breast “Business is good?” But Terry of Diamonds By Terry replied, saying “ I wear this sign because Business Is Good!!” “Wherefore is your business good, but we are in such distress??” Thou knowest my eyes fail me, there fore I cannot read the newspapers that proclaim misery in the land. Thou knowest I hear dimly, therefore cannot hear the mighty warnings of McNeil and Lehrer. Thou also knowest I am slow of mind and therefore do not comprehend what the wise men say in Washington, New York and Chicago. So my heart is not burdened and my work is joyful.” Hearing this, the crowd raised their voices and cried aloud Terry!! Terry!! Make one of your magic Buttons for us so we might be shed of our despair too. And Terry spake humbly saying “Its not magic boys, You just gotta believe”. In addition, there is the likelihood of touching 1,000-2,000 people (family/ friends/and clients) through the events run by each firm. The participating firms believe Florida Oceanographic is THE principal advocate and the organization truly making a difference for the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon. Rally for the River is expected to raise between $50,000-100,000. This represents a modest goal of $5,000-10,000 per firm. All donations will be made directly to Florida Oceanographic Society via their website, so no firm will handle donations themselves. Florida Oceanographic will post each firm’s fundraising results weekly on their homepage to encourage the firms to try and

TREASURE COAST — The community has come together to help provide the Y with a new roof and restored landscaping. The Y celebrated with a ribbon cutting and a breakfast for the community. On Tuesday, Jan. 7, the YMCA of the Treasure Coast welcomed the community for a breakfast and ribbon-cutting to thank them for support that provided a new roof for part of the building at the Y’s flagship location on Monterey Road in Stuart. The roof was severely deteriorated due to faulty installation from a roofing company that has since gone out of business. Unfortunately, the Y’s insurance company denied their claim to replace the damaged metal roof due to the defective installation. With a need greater than they could financially support, the Y launched the “Raise the Roof” capital campaign in January 2013 in order to obtain the funds needed for the repair. The goal for Phase 1 of the roof repair project was $75,000. The goal was met on April 4, when Seacoast Bank came through with a donation of $5,000 towards the project. The ribbon cutting was delayed so that the Y could showcase additional improvements to the facility. One such enhancement was the beautification project for the front and sides of the building. The project was spear-head-

ed by Jesse Jerome, a 16 year-old Y member and a boy scout. “This project was a great project to do,” said Jerome. “I hope the YMCA members appreciate the new, restored look of the YMCA as they walk in. I appreciate all the hard work that was done in order to bring everybody together to complete this project.” Jerome is trying to become an Eagle Scout, the highest rank that a scout can earn. He explained that boy scouts have to do community projects in order earn this rank. “It helps you learn how to be a leader and how to plan a major project. It teaches you how to communicate with others to get something done. It teaches you how to be an adult.” Florida Exotic Enterprises Landscaping and Irrigation generously donated all the plants for the project, while Mulch and More Landscape Products provided the soil and mulch. Jerome’s mother, father, brother along with many volunteers from Troop #832 came together to make this community project successful. With phase 1 of the Y’s roof replacement completed, planning for the Y’s additional roofing projects have begun. The roof of the Y’s fitness center, the pre-school childcare and the gymnasium are also in need of replacement or repair. If you are interested in donating to the Y to aid in these efforts, please contact, Charlene Foster at 772-286-4444 or cfoster@ymcatreasurecoast.org

He said the visit raises his confidence that federal funding will move up in Washington, D.C., priorities. “Just to have her come down on a weekend and take time to look at it personally was really good on her part,” Haddox said. “It speaks highly of her.” During the summer, U.S. Senator Bill Nelson, D-Fla., took a similar tour, and attended a conference about extensive damage to the lagoon. Later, Will Weatherford, Speaker of the Florida House, was flooded with Lake Okeechobee, the C-44 Canal, St. Lucie River, and Indian River Lagoon. That tour was an unsubtle sales pitch to get the speaker to back recommendations in state’s select committees report. The committee released the report on Nov. 5. Those recommendations have a $220 million price tag. Murphy said, at the press conference, that an unusually intense and widespread public outcry to protect the Indian River Lagoon has buttressed his efforts to get funding for projects that could reduce area water pollution. “I go to (the District of Columbia) and try to explain — hey, it’s very important,” he said.

TREASURE COAST — Advisories to avoid contact with water in St. Lucie and Martin counties have ended, but if the floodgates from Florida’s largest lake reopen come summer, expect toxins to skyrocket again, environmentalists warn. “It’s beautiful. It’s like it’s supposed to be. The discharges have stopped ... We’ve had some time for the incoming saltwater tide to work its way up to the North and South Forks,” Indian Riverkeeper Marty Baum said. Warnings issued in August to avoid contact with St. Lucie County waters near Harbour Ridge, Tarpon Bay, Veterans Park and River Park Marina were lifted earlier this month following a series of samples in the accept-

soggy, making the discharges greater. The lagoon also generates an estimated $3.7 billion on an annual basis and supports 15,000 jobs. It provides recreational opportunities for 11 million people per year. “That’s what the discharges went through. We lost loads of seagrass. Everything that couldn’t run, died,” Baum said. “Our conchs, our oysters, our clams, they all died. They couldn’t take the assault of the volume of freshwater.” The state’s wet season starts in mid-May. A fraction of last year’s rainfall could spell trouble for Treasure Coast waters, said Mark Perry, executive director of Florida Oceanographic Society in Stuart. “If we get a major tropical storm or even rainfall for a typical, normal year, we can believe that it’s going to happen again,” Perry said. “It may not be as dramatic as this summer, but we’ll get two or three months of freshwater discharges and that has a devastating effect on those resources we’re trying to recover.”

al waters is an indicator of fecal pollution. The presence of bacteria can come from storm water runoff, pets, wildlife and human sewage, health officials said. Advisories to avoid contact with Martin County waters near Leighton Park in Palm City and the Roosevelt Bridge in Stuart ended last month. Looks, however, can be deceiving, Baum added. Conditions under the surface still haven’t healed. “We’re probably five to six years away from having a healthy estuary,” Baum said. That’s if the discharges permanently cease, Baum said. The lagoon, which stretches across 40 percent of Florida’s east coast, is known as the most diverse estuarine environment in North America. Before billions of gallons of freshwater discharges were dumped into the water from May to October, the lagoon was home to more than 4,000 plant and animal species. Last year’s rainy season was particularly

Satirists return to Stuart Shelley Koppel Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

STUART – In 1981, a bipartisan group of Congressional staffers formed a troupe of singing satirists. They called themselves the Capitol Steps, after a scandal of the day. Rita Jenrette, then-wife of former Congressman John Jenrette, said that the couple had “made love” on the steps of the Capitol. Recently, the former Mrs. Jenrette, now the Principessa Rita Boncampagni Luvodisi, has denied the claim. That does not dismay Elaina Newport, a founding member of the group. They will make a return visit to the Lyric Theatre Jan. 27, despite the challenge to their very name. “The legend lives on,” she said. “We’ve had a lot of politicians and public figures deny a lot of things. That didn’t stop us from writing songs about it. You never know how long a scandal will live on. Ten years from now, Anthony Weiner will still be funny. When I look over our last song (in the show), which is our 30 years in three minutes, you can’t make this stuff up.” Newport said they’re having fun now with the mayor of Toronto, who has defended his behavior

Newport said that social media has made everything public very quickly. “Who knows who’s going to tweet what next?” she said. “Three years ago, we wouldn’t have talked about it. I’m sure Gary Hart (whose extramarital affair sank his 1988 presidential hopes,) thinks, ‘Mine was just a normal affair.’ Now, it would have to be some kind of animal.” Newport noted that Congressional approval ratings are less than

Guests will enjoy cocktails, heavy hors d’ oeuvres, a silent auction, and the main event: a live auction at 7 p.m. “Our studs and the ladies of our Women Build committee continue to out-do themselves each year,” said Margot Graff, executive director of Habitat for Humanity of Martin County. “They’ve orchestrated this one-ofa-kind auction featuring unique items donated by some of the Treasure Coast’s finest and most charitable gentlemen.” This fourth annual event as always, is NOT a bachelor auction. However, it features a lively group of gentlemen, nominated by their peers and selected to present a valuable auction item or package for bid, valued from $300 to $5,000. Items include firefighter or sheriff for a day packages, a private cruise for up to 35 guests aboard the Schooner Lily, gourmet chef-prepared meals, private sports lessons, portrait sessions and much more.

The family is already contributing to Habitat’s sweat equity requirement of 300 volunteer hours. They will purchase the home with a no-profit loan and their monthly mortgage payments will be used to build more Habitat homes. What do domestic violence awareness and bipartisanship have in common? The color purple FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

For a woman who advocates for domestic violence awareness and prevention on a daily basis, SafeSpace CEO Jill Borowicz thought she had conceived of every compelling way to get the message out. During her trip to Washington, D.C., in October, as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, she was delighted to hear a new perspective on the topic of domestic violence. While participating in U.S. House of Representatives Congressional Special Order Hour on Capitol Hill, Borowicz was witness to Representatives from both sides of the political aisle giving compelling and heartfelt speeches. Representative Donna Edwards, D-Washington, D.C., former co-founder and first executive director of the National Network to End Domestic Violence, reminded listeners that domestic violence crosses all lines — race, gender, age, ethnicity, geography and socio-economic status. Congressman Patrick Murphy, D-Florida, who represents District 18 where SafeSpace offices and shelters are located, also spoke: “We as a society have a responsibility to protect the most

vulnerable among us. A woman is battered every 15 seconds in our country. Behind this harrowing statistic is a sister, a mother, a daughter. This isn’t just a woman’s issue. It’s a family issue, a community issue, an economic issue, and a moral issue.” But the light bulb went off in Borowicz’s head when Republican Congressman Ted Poe from Texas proudly displayed his purple tie to the Speaker and explained that the color purple is what you get when you mix red and blue together. With red being the symbolic color of Republicans and blue representing Democrats, he made the case that domestic violence is most certainly a non-partisan issue that affects everyone. “They came together with a united voice to champion the issue of Domestic Violence prevention and it was an incredibly moving experience,” said Borowicz. In the spring, as part of SafeSpace’s year-round efforts to bring greater awareness about domestic violence, the organization will be hosting its annual Every Woman is My Sister event on March 22 at Willoughby Golf Club in Stuart. The event celebrates both

Tiffany Carr, president/CEO of the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence will serve as the event’s keynote speaker. Columba Bush, Florida’s former first lady and wife of former Governor of Florida Jeb Bush, will be attending as an honored guest. Bush has been a champion of domestic violence for many years and is actively involved with the Florida Coalition Against Domestic Violence. “We’re thrilled to have the former First Lady of Florida, Columba Bush, join us for the event this year,” Borowicz said. “We made quite an impact on Capitol Hill, and our goal is to continue to educate citizens and lawmakers on this bi-partisan issue so that funding and support for domestic violence prevention is available.” “As a society, we must continue to recognize the serious threat that domestic violence poses and force this issue out of the shadows. Batterers are deadly serious and our community must be, too. Education and understanding of the issue and its impact on the lives of our friends, family members and neighbors is paramount to efforts to both eliminate domestic violence in the future and help today’s victims become tomorrow’s survivors.” If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic violence, call the 24-hour hotline at 800-5001119. MARTIN COUNTY — The Guardians of Martin County, a nonprofit 501(c) 3 organization, is pleased to be one of the key sponsors of a new youth film festival focused on our environment, together with the Knopf Family Foundation. The project, “Youth Driven Cinema” is seeking videos from Martin County students from elementary school through high school on any marine related topic. Jensen Beach High School environmental studies teacher Crystal Lucas and Benjamin D’Avanzo, owner of “Enviro-Force” in Stuart co-founded the project. Mrs. Lucas says there is a strong need for younger generations to get involved in our environment. Mr.

D’Avanzo says, “it is not only my job to protect our natural resources, it is my passion. The idea of creating a new avenue for discussion through the lens of the next generation of stakeholders has inspired my commitment to this project.” The project comes on the heels of this past summer’s toxic blooms and bacteria in the Indian River Lagoon and St. Lucie River due to discharges from Lake Okeechobee. Mrs. Lucas and Mr. D’Avanzo encourage all teachers, principals, and community members spread the word about this unique opportunity. “We are excited to support this project because it engages the youth in our environment. Combining art and the environment in this innovative manner will be

Their offices will be there and Curtain Call productions for at least the next two years will take place at the Center. “We will be offering year-round theatrical programming there,” Sanders said. “We’ll be expanding our season of four shows to offer dinner theater, comedy shows and cabarets, as well as special events. “We hope to create a community hub. People are trying to keep overheard low to keep prices low. It’s hard to rent these kinds of places. We’re trying to create a place that will bend over backward to help people and make sure lo-
