At the Celebrities Fore Kids silent auction during the holidays, Richard and Valarie Cersosimo purchased silent auction basket donated by the Alyce & Co. While the couple from Connecticut kept most of the items from the basket, they re-donated the spa gift certificates back to the charity. The current national headquarters for PAL is located in Jupiter. Snyder said he also hopes to look at other cops-and-kids programs, too, to find the right fit for Martin County. Sheriffs are often the most visible elected officials in counties and help set their political tones. Snyder said he hopes to use his position to help traditionally working-class areas that are often at the same time among central producers of crime and the largest victims. “We do have some communities that are challenged and need more assistance than other communities,” the Sheriff said. “I have a heart for those communities. It’s my role as sheriff to make sure they get their fair share of services.” Snyder edged out challenger David Dees in the August primary with 11,704 votes against 10,017. Second challenger John “Ski” Pietruszewski garnered 3,363 votes. The Republican went on to an overwhelming victory over writein challenger Trent Wetherald in the November general election, 59,585 to 2,655. Sheriff Robert Crowder was retiring after a 20year stint that started with a 1992 primary victory over Snyder and three others. Snyder comes to the job with three decades of law enforcement experience. In addition to a 20year career at the Miami Dade Police Department, he joined the Martin County Sheriff’s Office under Crowder in 1993. Snyder was the chief criminal investigator, and was promoted to major. In 2006, he left the job after an election to the Florida Legislature. Snyder said one change he plans for the Sheriff’s Office is tapping into emerging technologies to converse with the public. “We’re going to be doing some cool stuff with digital,” he said. “… that’s what I’ve been talking about for two years. “I think the Martin County Sheriff’s Office has a reputation as being a hands-on agency, and we want to keep that reputation,” he said. “I’ve been on the streets and spent time at the jail and I’m finding a fine cadre of professionals who take their job seriously. I find nothing here in disarray or alarming. The worst thing for a new sheriff is to rush in here and start reinventing the wheel.” Continuing and expanding efforts to curtail gang growth will be a top priority for the first-term sheriff. “I think Martin County is a microcosm of the whole country,” Snyder said. “We have a little bit of (every type of crime). I’m concerned that the gang problem we have doesn’t grow. I want to make sure it doesn’t grow.” He said there’s no substitute for boots on the ground to combat gangs, so a strong presence of law enforcement is Plan A. But the veteran law enforcer said that no city or county can arrest its way out of a largely socio-economic phenomenon. So Plan A comes with other important components. “Secondly, that we involve ourselves in education,” Snyder said. “I think educating parents of what to look for and educating children about the danger of gangs (are important).” But to educate youths and children, you’ve got to attract them. “I don’t believe we have any (Police Athletic League Association) left in Martin County,” Snyder said. “It’s a program I’m drawn to and will be looking at.” A representative at the State of Florida Association of Police Athletic/Activities Leagues said that there was no chapter in Martin County, and was uncertain whether there had been in recent years. The national organization, PAL, started in 1914. Arthur Woods, then New York’s police commissioner, and Cpt. John Sweeney came up with the idea to combat crime by getting cops into neighborhoods to play sports with youths and children. It was likely the earliest example of a copsand-kids approach to curtailing

MARTIN COUNTY — Unseasonably warm weather will continue for the next few weeks, meteorologists are saying. Although the heat isn’t setting or breaking records, experts say rising Fahrenheit levels aren’t normal for this time of year. “For the month of December, we were above the normal,” National Weather Service meteorologist Derrick Weitlich said. “The average January temperature is 5 to 10 degrees above normal.” Weitlich said normal temperatures for mid-January are highs around 72 and lows in the 50s. In recent days, the heat has reached the upper 80s on the Treasure Coast. As far as when a cool-down might sweep the state, Weitlich said the models are too far out

and don’t show any activity yet. The Melbourne-based meteorologist said arctic oscillation patterns could be contributing to the warm weather. The arctic oscillation has two phases: a positive and a negative phase. When the arctic oscillation is in its positive phase, a ring of strong winds circulating around the North Pole acts to confine colder air across polar regions. This belt of winds becomes weaker and more distorted in the negative phase of the arctic oscillation, which allows an easier southward penetration of colder, arctic air masses and increased storminess into the mid-latitudes, especially across the eastern U.S., Weitlich said. Although the program is geared toward “tweens” (late elementary-early middle school club members), older teens from the recently established Teen Center are participating in the project, working more hands-on with the equipment and software. At Animal Care Extraordinaire veterinary clinic of Stuart, “going green” isn’t just a nice catch-phrase, but a way of doing business. Since a paperless office can save at least 17 trees and reduce office supply expenses by as much as 25 percent for each ton of paper saved, the staff decided they could do more. The U.S. Small Business Administration officials say the average office employee uses 10,000 sheets of paper annually – mostly though printing unnecessary copies – so it wasn’t hard to see where they could improve their conservation efforts. Since October 2011, as part of a group effort to do more to keep the Earth clean and green, the clinic’s staff has saved more than 45,000 sheets of paper from going into landfills by making a few simple changes to their office routines. These include: •Recycling – By recycling all paper and other recyclable material, the clinic has reduced their weekly trash by 50 percent, going from filling four garbage cans twice weekly to only two cans twice a week. • Replacing faxes with email – Most faxing has been eliminated, with

Glove or No Glove This is a personal preference. I don’t see many touring Professionals playing without a glove. I think the reason being that skin against leather or rubber grips would seem to slip more because of your hands perspiring. Also in wet weather you seem to get a better grip on the club with gloves. As you know they do make all weather gloves just for that purpose. You see most players take their gloves off while hitting short chips or putting. They claim it gives them a better feel. I personally put the glove on at the first tee, and don’t take it off until the round is finished.So whatever feels comfortable to you that should be your best choice. 50 – 100—yards or more, first rule take one extra club – choke down on grip about 1 inch. Feet should be a little wider than normal with a sound base. You really want to try to pick the ball out of the sand. Try to eliminate a big turn it’s basically an arm – shoulder swing with little lower body action. The backswing should be a little shor er than-a-normal swing.The reason for the extra club. Basically you’re trying to punch the ball – The more your swing your body your more apt to hit the ball fat – So tighten the swing up. Good Luck More tips to follow in coming weeks.

Free dental clinic re-opens For Your Voice News & Views On Friday, Jan. 11, Light of the World Charities re-opened the doors of its free dental clinic. The clinic had been closed for four months due to the flooding created by Hurricane Isaac. Now, in the new offices on Mapp Road in Palm City, Drs. David Girlinghouse and Dr. George Lundsted treated 12 patients, some of whom had waited in pain for a long time to get their help. One patient was so uncomfortable he had tried to extract his tooth himself. At the end of the day, all of the patients left with their problems resolved. The clinic is currently open three days a month and has seven volunteer dentists who work on a rotating basis with the help of volunteer dental and office assistants. They’re classically trained musicians who have made classical music hip. “They” are Russian-born violinist Aleksy Igudesman and British pianist Hyung-ki Joo, known as Igudesman & Joo. In a recent phone call from their home base in Vienna, Austria, the pair explained the lunacy that has made fans of everyone from Joshua Bell to Billy Joel. “For those slightly more mature, we like to say it’s ‘Monty Python’ meets Mozart,” Joo said. “For the younger audiences, we say it’s ‘South Park’ meets Bach.”

“It has a lot of lunacy,” Igudesman added. “We don’t make fun of the music, we make the music fun. We like to run things upside down. We love it when things go wrong. That’s when the fun begins for us. When things go too quietly, people tend to fall asleep. We’ve planted seeds to make things go wrong, I can pretty much guarantee the audience won’t fall asleep.” The two met as pre-teens at the prestigious Yehudi Menuhin School in England. They remained friends, to their surprise, and created their show, “A Little Nightmare Music,” as a way to entertain those who know classical music and those who don’t.

What we do is quite retro. The same composers we glorify today were the ones having fun. Mozart and Verdi were popular, people whistled their themes. We don’t differentiate between classical and pop composers. We like to combine and show parallels.” Indeed, one of their most popular numbers, shown on YouTube,’ is the Gloria Gaynor anthem, “I Will Survive.” “It combines many things,’” Igudesman said. “It’s funny and for us, it draws parallels. It has the same harmonic structure as Tchaikovsky. We make bridges and have fun doing that.” The duo is very popular with those 15-35 and they are thrilled that YouTube and iTunes have made their musical accessible to a younger audience who may then become the concert-goers of tomorrow. They designed “A Little Nigtmare Music” to be attractive to audiences of all ages. “We mix it up with humor,” Igudesman said. “It’s more attractive for a younger audience or an audience who is not very familiar (with classical music) but a lot of people who love classical music can enjoy it, too.” Joo said that it was common to have three generations of a family in an audience. “We have quite a few pictures with three generations,” he said.
