PALM CITY — If you want to get a bunch a people together to listen about crime prevention, forget the flyers and handbills with statistics — just bring the ribs, barbecue sauce and plenty of napkins. Approximately 130 residents from Palm City’s Whispering Sound Home Owners Association attended an informative gathering where they were treated to dinners prepared by the Martin County Sheriff’s Office BBQ Grill Team. The Sheriff’s Office hosted the feast for the residents coming

on board as the newest members of the Martin County Community Neighborhood Watch Program. The Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Practitioner, Trisha Kukuvka, said the barbecue was a huge success. “Anytime we can get the word out about crime prevention to the public, we’ll take it,” Kukuvka said. “It helps them to get to know their Sheriff’s Office; we want them to be comfortable with us. We want them to know how we respond, how our Office operates, and it helps to build relationships

MARTIN COUNTY — Palm City turned out big for the second World War II themed run at the Martin County Airport/Witham Field, Run for Honor on the Runway. There are lots of 5Ks, but probably only one with a B-17 Flying Fortress wing waving to the runners. On Saturday, Jan. 16, 70 runners took off to help speed Southeast Florida Honor Flight on its mission to get the veterans who fought the war against the Axis to the World War II Memorial, which opened on the National Mall in 2004. The

youngest runner was Palm City’s Johanna Beringer. She’s 7. At least 12 of the 70 runners were Palm City residents. Todd Tucker, chairman of the local Honor Flight hub said a lot of its support comes from the western side of the St. Lucie River. “A lot of guardians come from Palm City,” Tucker said. Guardians are volunteers who pay their ways to accompany World War II veterans when they visit Washington D.C. and surrounding area on honor flights. Honor Run on the Runway was co-sponsored by the Treasure Coast’s Honor Flight hub and the

PALM CITY — Since November, Costco has been meeting with residential communities in Palm City as part of a campaign to disseminate information about their proposed development on Martin Highway between the Florida Turnpike and High Meadows Ave. Jan. 7, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Costco’s representatives presented for the first time in a public venue to an audience of over 50 Hammock Creek residents. The meeting began with a brief introduction to Costco’s application, with a special focus on traffic, zoning, environmental, and development aspects. Afterward, the floor was opened to an extensive talkback, where residents primarily voiced frus-

tration. Jerry Katz, president of the Hammock Creek Sanctuary Homeowners, summed up the general consensus: “You’re known for being good neighbors. We’re asking you to be community conscious. This is not a commercial industrial site. Your proposal changes the very character of our community.” Traffic, as usual, was the central focus of residents’ concerns. The presentation given by Shawn Mackenzie of Mackenzie Engineering and Planning, the traffic analysts for the application, raised many questions. Whether or not the traffic data was drawn from national averages, county and company projections, or on-ground traffic counts was unclear. While at one point MacKenzie claimed that a traffic count had been conducted during the peak season of last year, he was unable to say exactly when it had occurred. It was also vague whether the

There were other reasons for selecting the site, he attested, but wouldn’t elaborate, besides stating that models had been used to determine the best location to serve their customer base. Several of the meeting’s attendees claimed to be Costco shoppers themselves, and some of them even lauded corporate growth. Very few of them, however, were in favor of the current location. A resident of Hammock Creek Estates said after the meeting, on the condition of anonymity, that his neighbors were all for the development; the other two divisions that were against it. Samantha Capaldo, a business graduate and organizer of Stop Costco at 714 and High Meadows, said, “Costco’s one of the best corporate citizens in the world. It’s shameful what [they’re] doing.” She moved to Palm City several years ago like many to get away from corporate development. Of particular interest to the community is the number of trucks that will be delivering to

traffic report’s growth projection took into account an influx of shoppers from nearby counties or had just considered Martin County. Were seasonal residents included in the report was another question. There was also concern that the survey did not include Berry Avenue and Golden Bear Way, which inevitably will serve as detour routes for the nearly 2,000 cars that Costco estimates will be attracted to the site daily. Another hot issue was the location Costco has settled on. Bob Raynes, Costco’s attorney and the meeting’s facilitator, defended Costco’s proposed use as an appropriate example of limited industrial development. He also pointed out that building farther west may be impossible due to urban service constraints. Two other alternatives were suggested throughout the meeting, however — a plot for sale across from the Sands Commerce Center on the other side of the turnpike, and a 31-acre industrial lot on Kanner Highway in Stuart. MARTIN COUNTY — The Hogs are heading to Stuart’s Memorial Park Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 30, and 31. It’s time for the ninth annual Treasure Coast Bike Fest, and there’ll be a thick serving of patriotism with heavy sides of veterans appreciation and fun. “We have wounded warrior Brian Mast there to speak, and we’ll be doing a flag retirement ceremony,” Tracy Howse, community development director at ARC of Martin County, said. ARC sponsors the annual event, and says their goal is to provide assistance and training to enhance the abilities for children and adults with disabilities to thrive daily. Mast, who is running for the 18th Congressional District, will speak at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, after the posting of colors and performance of the national anthem at 3:30 p.m. At 5 p.m., there’ll be a flag retirement ceremony, and at 5:15 “You Raise Me Up,” a tribute to parents who’ve lost their children while they were in service. At 6 p.m. the Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band will perform, followed by Green River, a tribute to Credence Clearwater Revival at 8 p.m. until 10 p.m. Then everyone will head

File photo Mitch Kloorfain chief photographer home to get rest for a Sunday for fun. The annual bike parade will kick off the Sunday morning. Gathering time is 9:45 a.m. There are two gathering spot: The Publix at Town Center Shops, 4231 N.W. Federal Highway, Jensen Beach; and at the Winn-Dixie at Market Place of Hobe Sound, 8867 S.E. Bridge Road. “They travel on Federal Highway and merge at (Southeast Monterey

Road), then head to Ocean (Avenue),” Howse said. “It’s really cool when they merge. They time it so well.” Registration for the bike show starts after the parade, 11 a.m. There are five categories: bagger, bobber, chopper, metric and stock. Of course, there’ll also be an overall winner named. Entry is $15 for each bike. Registration for the tattoo contest starts at 11 a.m., too. The cate-

gories are large and small color, along with black and gray. There’ll be an overall winner named, too. Entry is $5 a category. The folks at Twisted Image will handle the tattoo contest, and ARC accepts no responsibility for hurt feelings. No, really, that’s in the tattoo contest rules. Along with the contests, there’s

‘faux’ Baroque, but I love it. The Beethoven Sonata is the first sonata I played and the Faure Sonata was a favorite of Gingold’s.”

The concert is chronological, with the Vitali Baroque, the Beethoven Classical and the Faure Romantic. Those are the meat and potatoes. “There will be a couple of short pieces, the bon bons, for dessert. It’s a nice balance and you can see the variety of things the violin can do,” said Bell. “In the case of a recital, instead of coming on as a soloist for one piece, you give a tasting menu, a variety. It’s something that has continuity and you can explore the instrument and go from one piece to the next.” Bell has said that his favorite venue is Carnegie Hall, which seats 2800, but he generally prefers more intimate venues. He likes returning to the Lyric, which holds 500. “I’ve returned to the Lyric several times,” he said. “It’s fun to go back to a place I know. I really love small venues. The smallest is my home. I built my space for that. I like to give recitals in as small a space as possible.” Bell treats even the grandest of symphonies as chamber music. “I love the intimate feeling of chamber music,” he said. “My philosophy is to let the audience come to you, rather than shouting out. It’s a balance. Chamber music is about communication between

the artists onstage. Gingold had the values of not doing extremes. It was about details and nuance. I try to carry out those values.” Bell, whose mother is Jewish, has said that the violin is part of Jewish culture. When I asked him why, he replied, ‘Have you seen ‘Fiddler on the Roof?’ “It’s something that’s been associated with Jewish culture for a long time and it fed on itself,” he said. “There were role models like Heifetz and Milstein and Kreisler and Huberman, who owned my violin. Gingold knew all of them and in my lessons, he talked about them. I grew up with stories about them. Heifetz was my hero. I never modeled his playing because he was in his own league. He was the god for me.” Eventually, Bell may teach more than a few times a year, but he’s not ready yet. “Being a teacher is like being a parent,” he said. “I had great parents and I wanted to have kids. The same was with my musical parent, Gingold. It was such a great association and I want to do the same. I plan to do more as I get older, but I feel like I’m still in peak

Costco daily. According to Heidi Macomber, development director for Costco, up to nine Costco trucks will deliver daily between the hours of 4 and 9 a.m. In addition, another nine trucks from various contracted companies will deliver daily by appointment. Once every other day, a gasoline truck will deliver fuel for the 30,000 gallon, double-walled tanks that will service the store’s 16 fuel pumps. Doug Mulvanney, Costco’s architect, explained that storm water runoff will be diverted to an oil water separator which will help prevent leaching from the tanks. Macomber listed a number of benefits to the community: “We don’t just come into the community, build our store, and forget about where we are.” She said that Costco is involved with a few outreach programs like tutoring and supply-drives. Costco submitted their application on Oct. 19, but failed to comply with several code and comprehensive plan requirements, according to a staff report issued Dec. 15. Their proposal of a 152,661 square-foot store, 16pump gas station, and a .93 acre out parcel which will be developed commercially in the future leaves a lot to be desired. The staff report highlights non-com-

pliance of building height, lack of clarity regarding stormwater run-off, inconsistency of number of gas pumps, and also asks the plan to remove a left-turn only lane on Martin Highway. Thursday, Jan. 21, the county staff will hold a public Joint Workshop meeting to go over the items of the report. The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the Growth Department’s Joint Workshop Room (2401 SE Monterey Rd, Stuart). The Commission Chambers have also been reserved in case of overflow. Residents’ comments will be accepted in 3 minute installments. According to Raynes, the quasi-judicial review which is abiding the application will most likely last into the summer. Costco has to resubmit their application (they have 90 days since the issue of the staff report). After resubmittal, Costco will have to be reviewed by the Local Planning Agency and finally the Board of County Commissioners. Toward the end of the Hammock Creek meeting, Macomber was asked what Costco’s recourse would be if their application is rejected. While not being able to speak for the board of executives who would make that decision, Macomber did attest that if they were to lose the site, it would cost the company dearly.

Knud Hermansen, from Colorado, took top spot for the men with an asphalt-ripping 17:28.6, or three 5:38-minute miles. Kellie Pieterson-Sullivan, Stuart, led the ladies crossing the finish arc in 24:49.2, with impressive eight-minute miles. Dee Stanley, Jensen Beach, the eldest runner at 72, turned in a respectable age-group pace. Palm City’s Pamela Tucker took the silver for the ladies in her age group, 40 to 49, with neighbor Dawn Andrus on her heels for the bronze and Roxanna Pettinicchio following them for an honorable mention. Nancy Vucsko turned in a strong performance in her age group, 50 to 59. For the men, Palm City’s Dale Ruby took gold in his age group, 50 to 59, along with the overall bronze. Douglas Habicht took silver for the 40- to 49-year-olds, and Richard Tuschick took it for the 60- to -69-year olds. Chris Ampol took bronze in the 30 to 39 group, while David Mermell brought home his group’s, the 60- to 69-yearolds. Alex Beringer and Marc Terwilliger were the other Palm City runners. On Saturday, Jan. 30, the Atlantic City Boys will be at the Eissey Campus Theatre, Palm Beach Gardens, performing vintage hits from the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. On March 24, the local Honor Flight hub will present Johnny Cash and Friends, a tribute to the Air Force Veteran in Black, at Stuart’s Lyric Theatre. The next two Honor Flight trips, which have about 100 veterans each, will be April 16 and May 14. They’ll arrive back at Palm Beach International Airport at 8:20 p.m. Well-wishers are urged participate in Operation Homecoming to welcome the arriving veterans. All people have to do is show up and line the hallway ready to thank the Greatest-Generation veterans. The thanks usually hits 100 decibels. Indiantown Your Career Begins with US! makes bid for fair Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

MARTIN COUNTY — The Martin County Fairgrounds could be heading to Indiantown. On Jan. 13 County Commissioner John Haddox hosted a meeting about a proposed fair move. Hilary Mckeich, executive director of the Indiantown Chamber of Commerce, went with that town’s latest pitch for getting the fairgrounds. “It really just pairs perfectly with what we have going on around it,” she said at the meeting. McKeich urged commissioners to consider putting the fair on about 100 acres the county owns on Citrus Boulevard near Timer Powers Park. “I would see that as a way to better utilize the county’s investment in the park,” Commissioner Ed Fielding said at the meeting. In 2014 the commission nodded at a plan to spend about $2 million putting a horse arena in Timer Powers, 20652 S.W. Citrus Blvd.

Haddox, too, said that Indiantown was looking like a good fit for the fair. “I like Indiantown better than Palm City,” he said. Jay Spicer, the fair’s manager, said Indiantown could work for the fair. In previous interviews he advocated for moving the fair to Palm City. “We only get one crack at this, and I want it to be the right crack,” he said at the meeting. No other community has representatives aiming to convince commissioners to send them the fairgrounds. The fair is now crammed onto about 12 acres of county-owned land on South Dixie Highway, Stuart. That land would generate a lot of property-tax revenue if the county could sell it. Spicer said the fair has been squeezed for decades, and moving is the only cure. “Let’s do it,” he said. “Let’s go. We’ve been talking about it for 30 years.”

The fair association bought land to in South Stuart to move the fair in the 1990s. However, the land was outside the urban service boundaries, so the association couldn’t build on it. The proposed property is also outside the urban service boundaries. Last summer, the commission

approved $10,000 for a consultant to study moving the fairgrounds. The report is done, and the commission will discuss it soon at a regular meeting. In addition to Haddox and Fielding, commissioners Anne Scott and Sarah Heard were at the meeting. Doug Smith didn’t attend.

TREASURE COAST — Bruce Nathan isn’t joking when he says he’ll the next Florida junior Senator. The Palm City man is challenging congressman Patrick Murphy and others to win the seat Marco Rubio is vacating to run for president. Nathan is running without party affiliation. “I’m doing this because there’s a need,” Nathan said. “Not because I want to, but because I’m going to fulfill that need.” It might seem easy to dismiss Nathan’s candidacy as a pipe dream, but not so fast he says. “I think I’ve got a lot of people in the nation who would be on my side,” Nathan said. The Senate candidate points out

that a patent clerk expanded our understanding of space and time in a single amazing year of writing scientific papers. That was, of course, Albert Einstein. Nathan also points to Bruce Lee, a man who defied centuries of convention at the age of 27 by publishing a book that claimed all forms of martial arts were right and wrong, and their techniques were subject to modification by the students learning them. That book is “The Tao of Jeet Kune Do,” and was the start of today’s mixed martial arts, making Lee one of the most influential martial artists ever. “He created a whole new form of martial arts,” Nathan said. “Today, it’s influenced everything (martial arts) students are taught.” Nathan, 55, is a physical ther-

NATHAN from page 14 apist with six children spanning ages 5 to 25. He’s held no elected or appointed office, but has been active in his children’s schools’ parent organizations. Nathan said his mixture of experiences has helped him see the nation’s and state’s fundamental problems clearly. “I have the solutions,” Nathan said. “I don’t have the ideas. No, I have solutions, and I’ll work until I’ve done the solutions.” Among his most important issues are education and immigration reform, along with ending human trafficking and speeding efforts to restore the Everglades. Other issues the candidate mentions are caring for veterans and campaign finance reform. The one he speaks most about is education reform. “We’re unfortunately bringing in this thing called Common Core, which is not teaching anything they’ll be using in the real world,” Nathan said. Nathan said the Department of Education is simply not benefiting the country. “The Department of Education has to go,” he said. “It’s sitting up there costing us a whole lot of money.” With the elimination of the department, Nathan said, a transition can begin to take education back to the teachers in class-

rooms. He would introduce and support efforts in the Senate to reduce standardized testing. Additionally, Nathan said he’ll introduce plans in the Senate to shift paying for college toward and accepted private-sector activity. “Every child needs to make it to college and there are ways to do it so government doesn’t have to pay for it, and students don’t have to pay for it.” He said through tax and other incentives, Congress could foster an educational norm in which companies sponsor university students on contracts for years of service, similar to how the Reserve Officer Training Corps works. Nathan said he’ll offer more complete plans as the election year progresses. In addition to Nathan, there are 20 Senate candidates listed by the Florida Division of Elections. Because Nathan is running without party affiliation, he won’t appear in a primary. The general election will begin in earnest at the end of October. Early voting sites will open Oct. 24, by which time absentee ballots will be out. It’ll continue until Nov. 5. The general election will be Nov. 8. At press time Nathan doesn’t have any campaign events scheduled. To learn more, visit www.brucenathan2016.com.

He further explained that if the doctor finds the human remains, which he suspects she will, those remains will be turned over to the FDLE (Florida Department of Law Enforcement) for submission to the FBI for DNA testing and database matching. “Obviously we hope the mother, father, or close relative of this child is in the FBI’s database, then we can go from there.” Snyder said. Snyder said the identities of the infants, other than Baby Moses, is not something the Sheriff’s Office is exploring. “There is no foul play suspected in either of the other two infants,” Snyder said. “There were no homicides that year, and we have nothing to lead us to be suspicious, so we intend to let those bodies rest in peace.” Snyder clarified the only reason they are examining those remains is to determine the remains of

“Sometimes better science comes along to re-examine evidence and cold cases can be cracked.” Sheriff William Snyder Baby Moses, who was in fact, murdered. The victim of a drowning shortly after his birth, the infant was found by boaters from Oklahoma near Sandsprit Park, floating in the St. Lucie River in November 1983. Examination of the body revealed evidence suggesting lack of birthing professional, or typical medical care at the time the infant was born. Despite an extensive investigation at the time no leads came to light and the case was closed. The case was reopened this year as the first in a pile of unsolved cases being re-examined as part of the Sheriff’s Office new “Cold Case” initiative. “Sometimes better science comes along to re-examine evidence and cold cases can be cracked,” Snyder said.

After their 8:30 a.m. class Lynn Phinney, Mary Donnally, Debbie Hendry, Stephanie Parrish and Lily Nofi are pictured in the front. Etsie Foster, Linda Germanetti, Carol Brunton, owner/instructor Katie Dyer, Ruthie Hawks and Carol Light are in back.

The Palm City Jazzercise classes donated Christmas pajamas again this year, for the 36 children at the Hibiscus Children’s shelter in Jensen Beach. Each lady chose a name from the list of children currently at the shelter, and went shopping for just the right pajamas for that child. The popular choices were “Frozen” princess, Miss Kitty, Spider-man, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Superman and “Star Wars.”

The pajamas were packed in brightly colored boxes by the Palm City Cookie Ladies and delivered to the shelter. Then the pajamas were given out on Christmas Eve, and the children wore them on Christmas morning when they opened their gifts under the tree. This project has been organized by Pat Tiemeyer for the past 8 years along with Katie Dyer, the owner of Palm City Jazzercise. For more information, go to justjazz741@gmail.com.

Musical sets out to entertain you STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

STUART – The musical “Gypsy” has an amazing pedigree. It has a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Jule Styne and lyrics by a young Stephen Sondheim, who had worked with Laurents on “West Side Story.” It starred Ethel Merman and was based on the memoirs of Gypsy Rose Lee. The musical features the ultimate stage mother, Mama Rose, and her two daughters and songs like “Let Me Entertain You,” “Everything’s Coming up Roses,” “Together (Wherever we Go,”). Many critics consider it among the best of American musicals. StarStruck Theatre will present a professional production of “Gypsy” Feb. 11-21. Jennifer Jones, the director, spoke recently about why she chose “Gypsy” and about the production, in which she will also play burlesque stripper Tessie Tura. “’Gypsy’ is in my top three musicals,” she said. “It’s thought of as one of the greatest musicals ever written. Many people in the music world say it has the greatest Overture. Musicians love to play it. For me, not only is the music phenomenal, but it’s the way it’s written, it’s the relationships between the characters.

It’s an amazing show.” Mama Rose is one of the most complex characters in musical theater. I asked Jones about getting audiences to want to love a character who is not very loveable. “As much as I am driven by the music, I have to have characters I care about,” she said. “The interesting thing is watching a story about these girls and wondering what the mother is doing to them. At the end, when Rose sings her final number, it’s all about her. It was always about her. You get caught up in the brilliance of the music and then it hits that it’s all about her.” Jones said that the genius of the role is that we come to care about her even though she has many flaws. “Just like Shakespearean characters had tragic flaws, what makes you care is that though she’s tough and a bully, you connect to the fact that so many of us have something inside we want that we haven’t achieved.” “She wanted to be a star and because it didn’t happen for her, she’s put all her emphasis on her daughters. She’s a bully, but you have a sense that she wants something and at the end, she tells us that she just wanted to be noticed.”

Battle of bands to aid Lyric outreach Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

STUART – The Lyric Theatre is gearing up for an epic Battle of the Bands. Middle and high school students from Martin and St. Lucie counties are invited to submit videos of their groups on YouTube from Feb. 15-March 14. Finalists will be selected by judges from the League in combination with YouTube ratings. Finalists will be announced by April 15 and will compete May 7 on the Lyric stage. Bands may compete in one of two categories: garage bands with two or more members with instruments and school ensembles with no more than 25 members playing instruments. Bands can include singers. There is a $25 registration fee that will benefit the Lyric’s arts and education programs. On May 7, finalists will compete for prizes. Winners will be selected by judges and audience choice votes. The garage band winner will win a cash prize and the opportunity to open for a Lyric show next season. The ensemble/

school band winner will have the choice of a cash scholarship or Lyric Master Class for the school. The new event is sponsored by the Lyric League, an auxiliary group formed to help the Lyric in its mission of providing a home for the performing arts that entertains and educates. The Battle of the Bands is intended to support local, young talent ns to raise funds to expand the Lyric’s arts and education programs such as Artists in Residence, Children’s Discovery Series and the Awesome Summer Camp. Funds will be raised through the May 7th event with sponsorships, ticket sales and audience choice votes Audience members will have the opportunity to put dollar bills in the box for a particular band as a vote. Colleen Schramm is co-chair of the Lyric League. She spoke about it and the Battle of the Bands. “What we’re trying to do is come up with an annual signature event that will be our key fundraising event for the league and publicize what we do,” she said. “It’s for education and outreach. We’d like to start doing ticket underwriting, so more children have

MARTIN COUNTY — The statistics are staggering. One in three women are raped or beaten in their lifetime. That equates to one billion of the women alive in the world today. Our community will participate in a global movement to end violence against women and girls during Martin County’s third annual One Billion Rising for Justice event which take place on Valentine’s Day – Sunday, Feb. 14, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Gazebo Park in downtown Stuart. The global movement, founded by poet and playwright Eve Ensler, began on Feb. 14, 2013 when one billion activists in 207 countries and territories came together to hold a series of “risings” – demonstrations, dances,

Photo courtesy of Megan Morris marches and flash mobs — in the biggest mass action in human history to demand an end to violence against women and girls. The idea to coordinate a local “rising” in Martin County was the brainchild of now 18-yearold Olivia Ranieri, while she was an International Baccalaureate student at South Fork High School. She was inspired to take action by her English teacher,

Ms. Kimberly Ballard. “I’m passionate about women’s rights and violence against women is a pertinent and important issue across the globe. It’s also an issue that women are facing right here in our own community and I wanted to take action locally,” explained Ranieri. This year, the torch was passed

Billion Rising is ‘Listen, Act, Rise,’” said event co-organizer Stephanie Brookshire. “We hope people will listen to the issues, act in order to make a difference in the lives of women in our community, and rise up together for those who cannot rise for themselves.” Attendees should be ready to do just that. The event is free to all and will feature speakers from local non-profits SafeSpace and the Inner Truth Project (two organizations that help people who have been victims of domestic violence and sexual assault). While violence against women is a serious issue, the event itself is fun and celebra-

tory with dance demonstrations and singing performances from various local groups, music from local drum circles as well as other entertainment and refreshments. Last year more than 300 people attended the event and this year the committee co-chairs anticipate even more attendees and hope to especially inspire the youth of our community. “If the violence is going to stop, it has to start with us,” continued Brookshire. “Values instilled in us when we are young carry on into adulthood.” In addition to attendance by hundreds of people spanning all ages at Martin County’s second
