John Dodge is more a tennis man, but he came to adore golf, too. Seems fitting then that there’s now the John Dodge Four Ball Tournament and Dodge Cup. “He was very excited,” Lore Dodge, his wife, said. “I said, ‘Yes, John, it’s all about you.’” The Harbour Ridge Yacht & Country Club recently established the tourney to honor the community’s founder and longtime resident. The season-long match is open to club members, and about 100 are signed to play. John, who lives in Harbour Ridge, was unavailable for an interview. His wife said the family is deeply moved by the honor. “John is my guiding star, and I’m sure he’s been a guiding star to many others,” she said. Lore said John grew up learning to appreciate “all the good things that God gave us in nature.” “He’s from New Hampshire, the

Therapeutic riding instructor becomes an author

Linda Kendall McLendon, founder and executive director of Full Circle Therapeutic Riding, has embarked on a new career as an author. Her first book, ‘Unintended Lies’ debuted at number three on Amazon.com.’s ‘Hot New Releases: Best Drama Category.’

By Shelley Koppel Staff writer PALM CITY – Linda Kendall McLendon has been walking in circles for 20 years. As founder and executive director of Full Circle Therapeutic Riding, she and her volunteers have helped children with physical, mental and emotional special needs gain a sense of mastery and accomplishment through riding. McLendon has just published her first book, “Unintended Lies,” a mystery about a widow who moves from New York to Florida and discovers that her husband’s accidental death was no accident. The equine therapist/author has lived in Florida most of her life. “I feel like a Cracker,” she said. “I went to Jensen Beach Elementary School in 1952. I started riding in the Savannas in Jensen Beach while I was in elementary school and started lessons when I was 12.” McLendon worked in a variety

of fields, including stints as a medical and legal secretary. She was involved with the Twin River Saddle Club and was horse leader for 4-H when she was approached by a friend about working with a 3-year-old autistic child. Thus began Full Circle. McLendon is not only the director and instructor. She also serves as fundraiser and grant writer. The program is funded through grants and donations that go to Parent to Parent of the Treasure Coast, the nonprofit organization that is Full Circle’s fiscal agent. Parent to Parent is a support and advocacy group that helps families with special needs children, many of whom come to Full Circle for therapy. One of McLendon’s goals is to expand the role of Full Circle to include an equine-assisted mental health program for children with behavioral or mental health issues. She cites one youngster who had behavioral problems and came as a client.

MARTIN COUNTY — As flu season reaches its peak, medical professionals are urging the public to take precautionary measures to avoid infection. To lessen the spread, people with flu symptoms in Martin County are encouraged to stay home from work or school until the illness subsides. Health Department officials said there

are other preventative measures people can take, including vaccination. “We are really trying to push prevention,” Martin County Health Department spokeswoman Renay Rouse said. “It’s not too late to get a flu shot.” Rouse said the vaccine takes roughly two weeks to build up immunity, so residents shouldn’t wait to get a shot. Anyone over the age of 6 months can receive one, Rouse said. Local pharmacies across the county offer the shot to adults, but children must receive the vaccine from a pediatrician, she said. Flu symptoms may include a 100-degree or higher fever or feeling feverish, cough, sore throat, runny nose and chills. Other ways to remain vigilant against the illness is cleanliness and practicing healthy habits including good nutrition to strengthen the immune system. “Be proactive and have good hygiene,” Rouse said. “Cover your cough and sneeze.” “Take care of yourself in other ways. Get good rest and good nutrition,” she said.

According to the latest statistics released Jan. 16 by the Florida Department of Health, 56 percent of the lab-confirmed influenza cases in Martin County are in infants up to age 24. Rouse said that age group is more susceptible to infection because schools are breeding grounds for germs. In the first week of the year, Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin counties all reported “mild” flu activity, according to the Florida Department of Health. As of Jan. 16, all three counties have seen a surge in reported cases and are reporting “moderate” activity. Overall, flu activity across the state has been widespread, officials said. According to the Centers for Disease Control, influenza activity is increasing nationwide and is most elevated in the eastern half of the country, where it has reached an epidemic status in some areas. To stay healthy this influenza season, follow these guidelines: • Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu

Art McCamey, former president of the club, said he’s long been impressed that a developer chose to live in a community he built. “I got to know John for what he is,” McCamey said. “He’s a very forthright man, a very honest man.” Lore said John’s family has owned a summer hotel in New Hampshire since before the Civil War, the Mountain View House. It taught him a hard work ethic. “He was washing dishes when he was 7 years old,” she said. Then he’d go out at night to behold more of nature. “He looks at the stars at night, the Big Dipper,” she said. And he looks at the birds he came to admire so long ago. Little Italy comes to Tradition By Nicole Rodriguez Staff writer TRADITION — Tonight, Tradition Square is set to receive the godfather of all makeovers. The square will be transformed to resemble Little Italy’s from San Diego and Chicago to New York’s City’s famed Mullberry Street for the 6th Annual Taste of Little Italy, which runs from Jan. 25 to Jan. 27. Organizer and event president Jerry Somma said last year, 20,000 festival goers embarked on a cultural journey filled with authentic Italian food, music, art and Italian tradition. Local pizzerias, bakeries and Italian souvenir shops will line the square during the festival’s three-day run. Scents like Sunday gravy, fresh calzones and cannoli will fill the air, but the most important part is family, Somma said. “Our foundation is family,” said Somma, a Jupiter resident with Port St. Lucie family ties, who

has been organizing the event since it began in 2008. “We want to share old traditions and create new memories.” To share customs, Somma will have an Italian artist create street art with chalk. There will be a wine seminar and traditional live music performances, Somma said. In years past, performers and special guests included Vito Spatafore Sr. from HBO’s hit series, “The Sopranos” and Golden Globe and Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Frank Stallone, who bears a strong resemblance to his older brother, Sylvester Stallone. This year, Deana Martin, daughter of the legendary Rat Pack member, Dean Martin, will perform, Sotmma said. He added the singer will perform a duet with her late father using video technology. Somma said the simple act of sharing food is also an Italian tradition. “Food is a passion when it comes to Italians,” Somma said. “The table is the nucleous of where everything happens whether it’s to celebrate or to comfort.”

Somma said the event never ceases to please families who attend, which is gratifying for Somma, who donated a portion of the event’s proceeds to the nonprofit organization, Little Smiles. “I take great pride in this event and I’m humbled when I see the grandparents, parents and children together,” Somma said. “Through the years we’ve lost the opportunity to spend quality time together. I want to bring that back.”

“She’s now a volunteer and heading to college to study social work,” McLendon said. “We also assist students in earning college credits for volunteerism.” Her work at Full Circle is one of the reasons McLendon took many years to write her book. Its first week, it debuted at number three on Amazon’s Hot New Releases: Best Drama Category. She attributes that to having a lot of patient friends. “They were waiting so long for me to finish it,” she said. McLendon said that the main character, Catherine DeLong, is a compilation of several people, including herself and her best friend, killed by a drunk driver. She believes she has given her friend life on the written page. While the book is a mystery, it is also about self-discovery. “Catherine was from Florida and moved to New York,” McLendon said. “She runs a nonprofit for kids who are falling through the cracks. She moves back to a ranch in Florida to find herself again and for a different rhythm than (she had) in New York.” While McLendon is enjoying her life as a published author, doing book signings and speaking engagements, she is still devoted to her day job, running Full Circle. It’s all about the kids, whom she describes as “differently-abled.”

“They teach us patience and understanding,” she said. “Sometimes they see the world in a much more beautiful way than we do. I wouldn’t have walked in circles for 20 years if I didn’t think it worked.” For more information about Full Circle Therapeutic Riding, visit the website www.fullcircletherapeuticriding.com or contact Linda McLendon by email to lmcfullcircle@aol.com. Donations to Parent to Parent of the Treasure Coast may be sent to P.O. Box 365, Palm City, FL 34991. “Unintended Lies” is available in paperback and ebook format from Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com.

featuring notable women of Stuart dressed in fashions from the past 100 years. The 14th Annual Hearts for Hope Luncheon to benefit House of Hope will be held Monday, Feb. 4th at Sailfish Point Country Club. Chairwoman Connie Bass and the Hearts for Hope committee have assembled a unique array of shopping, entertainment and culinary experiences at the event, which will begin at 10:30 a.m., to ensure enough time for guests to enjoy all elements of the festivities. Hearts for Hope will be headlined by Laura Schroff, author of “An Invisible Thread,” whose story ties directly with the mission of House of Hope, a local nonprofit agency that fights hunger and poverty right here at home. In her book, Schroff describes the connection between herself and a

busy sales executive , and a hungry child she met on a Manhattan street corner. Schroff heard, “Excuse me lady, do you have any spare change? I am hungry,” and it marked the beginning of an extraordinary friendship that ultimately transformed two lives. Other highlights of the Hearts for Hope fund-raiser include: •Distinctive vendors with unique accessories and art (in place of the traditional silent auction). •Accessories and decorative items for sale from House of Hope thrift stores. •A drawing for a custom-made pendant, designed and donated by

Musical celebrates war bond effort By Shelley Koppel Staff writer STUART – It’s 1942 and the Unites States has entered World War II. Hollywood is enlisted to help in the war effort with the Victory Tour Caravan, featuring luminaries such as Bob Hope Lucille Ball and Jack Benny. Jody Madaras spoke from his home in New York about his show, in which he also has a starring role. “When I got the idea to do the show, one of the things I found was that no one had ever done a

She was very proud of the United States and believed it was best when the country was united. That’s the theme of “All Hands on Deck” and, hence, the title. Her handwriting is in this show. “My grandpa came to Ellis Island (from Hungary) in 1911 and

“When I got the idea to do the show, one of the things I found was that no one had ever done a show based on the caravan tour. It was a huge part of the war effort and no one had ever honored them. I ended up writing it, came up with a score and raised money. I really believed in it.”

served in World War II. There are a lot of vets in my family. Adolph and June are a big part of the show. Without their influence, I might not have had the idea.” The show debuted in 2011 and has been well-received. Madaras hopes eventually to bring it to New York, but for now, he is happy taking his several casts around the country. “We sold out in Dallas for four weeks,” he said. “The audience left feels a little better and happier about our country.” “All Hands on Deck” will be performed at the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart, on Jan. 27 at 4 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $45. Call the box office at (772) 286-7827 or order online at www. lyrictheatre.com.

nO anxiEty • nO pain • nO StrESS

Imagine actually looking forward to a dental appointment. Imagine coming out of your dental visit relaxed and refreshed. Dr. Michael Sohl and his expert team have brought dentistry innovation and your comfort to a whole new level, providing gentle sleep for all implant, cosmetic, and general dentistry. From the simplest to the most sophisticated dental procedures. Performed with expertise, delivered with a deep commitment to personal attention and caring.

Are Dental Implants Right for You?

Now, you have more options. Implant-retained dentures are permanent, and they look, feel, and function like natural teeth. You can smile and eat without fear of slippage. You can go to sleep at night and wake up in the morning with your teeth in place.

Dr. Sohl is on the forefront of implant placement. He has a dental CAT scan unit on premises for computer guided implant placement protocols for Nobel Biocares All-on Four/Teeth in a DayTM procedures. All-on-Four/Teeth in a DayTM was developed to minimize the number of implants required to anchor a complete set of dentures. A full arch can be replaced with four implants in a single visit, as opposed to as many as eight implants and multiple office visits.
