Costco takes their course After a joint workshop between Costco representatives and Martin County staff, a burning question still on the minds of Palm City residents is, ‘Why here?’ Adam Laten Willson

PALM CITY — Jan. 21 was the first opportunity Costco could sit down with Martin County Growth Management Department (GMD) to hash out the details of its Palm City application. The public meeting was held in the GMD’s Com-

Almost two years ago, Costco planners began meeting with Martin County regarding a 152,661-square-foot store they wish to build on Martin Highway east of the Turnpike in Palm City. The development also includes a 16-pump gas station, and a .93acre out-parcel which will be developed commercially in the future. Costco submitted their official application on Oct. 19, and are expected to submit a more complete application sometime in the next few months. Perhaps the most burning question on everyone’s mind regarding Costco’s proposal, is why are they

MARTIN COUNTY — Nineteen migrants, mostly men, and a 12-year-old child, were arrested and turned over to U.S. Border Patrol agents, after landing on Jupiter Island Friday morning, according Martin County Sheriff, William D. Snyder. The Sheriff’s Office joined the Border Patrol, Jupiter Island Public Safety Department, Tequesta Police and Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office to take into custody 15 Haitian, one Bahamian and one Jamaican

migrant whose boat was spotted by residents just north of Blowing Rocks Preserve, landing near the 400 block of South Beach Road on Jupiter Island. K-9 units were utilized to search for the last few missing refugees after the majority were detained without incident. Snyder said to the best of his knowledge everyone is accounted for, but to keep in mind they didn’t see the landing. “All we have are the statements from the people on the boat,” Snyder said. “And they don’t have a whole lot of motivation to tell

Palm City Art Associates open annual show Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — Get ready for a month of magnificence. The 125-member Palm City Art Associates is opening its 27th annual Juried Art Show and Sale on Thursday, Feb. 4, at the Peter & Julie Cummings Library. The opening reception will be 5 to 7 p.m., and the art will remain on display throughout the month. Among the offerings at this year’s opening reception is an opportunity to acquire a Jane “Ejan” Blatt original oil painting, “Here, There and Everywhere.” Blatt, a legend among local art aficionados, died shortly before last year’s homecoming art show. From 2009 to 2014 the library was unable to host the art show, so it moved around Stuart. It returned to Palm City in 2015. “Yes, Ms. Jane is still alive and well with us,” Betty Brain, the association’s president, said. The painting, featuring a river bank with palm trees and grassland, will go to the winner of a drawing. Funds will go to the Jane “Ejan” Blatt Memorial Art Award. The associates have long had

scholarships for Martin County students heading to study art at college. Brain said the Blatt award recognizes students not just for their artistic talents, but for another of Blatt’s legendary qualities — a seemingly endless supply of energy to volunteer for innumerable charities. “The Blatt scholarship requires not only artistic quality, but involvement in the community,” Brain said. Childhood cancer survivor and Palm City youth Bret Taylor received the inaugural Blatt scholarship last year. As fate had it, Blatt interviewed Taylor for the Martin County Arts Council’s annual awards, the mARTies. Blatt’s husband, Galen Guberman, said she had great respect for the lad’s talent and character. The show features five categories: oil and acrylic; watercolor; pencil, pastel and charcoal; mixed media; and photography. Additionally, there’ll be a Best of Show recipient. The winners will be announced at the opening reception. The association started in the 1980s at Martin Downs. It grew and by the 1990s moved to the

PALM CITY — The Farm Bureau Foundation of Martin County is aiming to help current and aspiring agriculturist. Its sixth annual 3D Archery Tournament is on Sunday, Jan. 31. “We’re just there to raise some funds, so we can support the agriculture in Martin County,” Rob Taylor, president, said. Near as he can tell, the foundation’s is the only annual archery tourney in Martin. “When my kids started shooting bows, because Dad did, I looked around and said, ‘Wow, there are no archery tournaments around (Martin County),’” Taylor said. While Farm Bureau Insurance is well known, the not-for-profit American Farm Bureau Foundation doesn’t have quite as much recognition. The foundation contributes to protecting and promoting agriculture in many ways, ranging from educating children and youths to legislators about farming and other agricultural activities.

If you’re a habitual eater who rarely notices whether you’re actually hungry or not, new research shows that exercise restores the sensitivity of neurons that tell you when you’re full. So in the long run, exercise can make you feel fuller, eat less, burn more calories, and lose more weight. Question: My gym just got a rowing machine and I am really looking forward to trying it. The great thing about rowing is the way it forces you to counteract your normal daily posture (rounded shoulders and shortened hip flexors); proper rowing technique opens the chest, strengthens the back and uses a great range of motion in the legs. new exercises to try. Answer: While biceps exercises can seem monotonous, there are several variations that you can do to bring some excitement back into your arm routine. One of the easiest things you can do is to change up the traditional biceps curl exercise is to simply change the hand position from palms up to palms facing in, along with performing this exercise with both arms together or in an alternating fashion. Instead of standing or sitting, try performing the dumbbell curl on an incline bench, adjusting the back to a 45-degree angle. Finally, if your gym has a cable pulley system, attach a cable straight bar to a low pulley and perform the biceps curls. A rope attached to the low pulley is also a great alternative. Hope this gives you a few new ideas. Question: The day after I run or lift weights, my low back is always achy. I’m not new to exercise and I know my form is good, so what am I doing wrong? Do you have any advice for eliminating low back pain? Answer: Low back tension can be experienced by sedentary people, as well as highly trained athletes. Long periods of sitting along with any weight-bearing sport or exercise that involves

running, jumping or rapid dynamic movements can produce tension on the low back. Without stretching the muscles after these types of activities, the lower back will tighten and low back strain or pain may occur. If you are not currently stretching, begin by incorporating a stretch called Cat/Cow. This is a simple low back stretch and can be performed daily or after your workouts. Position yourself on your hands and knees. Slowly let your back and abdomen sag toward the floor. Then slowly arch your back, as if you are pulling your abdomen up toward the ceiling. Repeat this sequence 5 times and up to two times daily. Linda Lawrence is the owner of Anytime Fitness in Palm City. Martin County seeks new members for Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

MARTIN COUNTY — Palm City is a cycling magnet. The Veterans Memorial Bridge is a challenging ride hardcore road cyclists, roadies, can’t resist. Now Citrus Boulevard is sporting bike lanes from St. Lucie County to Indiantown with one stop light in between — a cyclist’s dream. Palm City is also a pretty safe spot to cycle — except for the intersection at Martin Downs Boulevard and Mapp Road. That’s where cars have the worst in-

teractions with pedestrians and bicycles in Palm City. “That was the only cluster of crashes within Palm City,” Bolivar Gomez, project manager at the Martin County Metropolitan Planning Organization, MPO, said in a telephone interview. One of the four cyclists and pedestrians hit at that intersection in recent years died from the injuries. There have also been vehicle-on-bicycle and –pedestrian collisions along Martin Downs, Mapp Road and Martin Highway. Not surprisingly, there’s a small

so insistent on this particular Palm City location? As late as last fall, St. Lucie County’s City Manager office had been in contact with Costco with an alternative proposal to bring Costco up there. “We’ve reached out to Costco regarding property in St. Lucie,” says Daniel Holbrook, Asst. City Manager. “We gave them information regarding trips, zoning and maps.” “I understand their decision from a corporate standpoint,” he added. “They want to build where their members are. Costco has the numbers.” Nonetheless, St. Lucie has been rapidly developing, according to Holbrook. With more than 174,000 residents in the city alone, approximately seven times the size of Palm City, and more retirees and families moving every year, PSL should seem a lucrative alternative to Costco developers. Holbrook says his department was suggesting a plot in the Southern Grove area of St. Lucie, a 3,600-acre tract of land that extends from Tradition Parkway in the North to Becker Road in the South, just west of I-95. Not only is the land there, but development has been growing at a breakneck rate. Recently, Keiser University has signed on to build a 74,000-square-foot campus at Tradition Center for Innovation, anticipated to attract an enroll-

ment of 1,200 students, according to founder Arthur Keiser. Nearby, the Mann Research Center has been planning its second phase of construction, which will add another 50,000 feet to the healthcare research facility. Also, a new restaurant proposal, Recovery Sports Grill, has been approved by the City Council to erect a 9,350-square-foot sit-down establishment in that general area. “In the last several months, there has been a lot of activity around that particular node,” said Holbrook. According to Nikki Van Vonno, Growth Management director for Martin County, another locale on U.S.1 south of Indian Street was also suggested as a possible site for Costco. “The City of Stuart is very anxious to have Costco within their boundaries,” she said. The meeting in Palm City was mostly lackluster, with Costco simply vowing to comply with city code and comprehensive plan in their next submittal. A few items needed clarification. The side of Costco facing the turnpike will constitute a primary façade, and therefore will need to be made consistent in design with the other facades of the store. Further details regarding a future transit stop were alluded to, the site being looked at between Costco’s proposed gas station and the out-parcel they plan to develop in the future.

Costco says they are not planning on submitting a plat with their new application, leaving a cloud of mystery over the interior architecture of their development. The plat would be if they wanted to sell any portion of their site, says Van Vonno. “So far, they have come forward with a Master Plan and a Final Site Plan. The Master Plan mentions the future development of an out parcel. The Final Site Plan only pertains to the Costco portion of the development. If they don’t end up selling the out parcel, they will not have to produce a plat.” They also say that their light fixtures will be 34 feet in height, which still exceeds the city’s 30-foot requirement. Another item of particular note: Costco is already looking at the option of moving the access road that they propose to build through the wetland adjacent to High Meadows Avenue, which will serve as the chief entrance to the site. They plan to possibly build it further south than where they had proposed, aiming to further minimize wetland impact. Traffic was not specifically addressed at the meeting. The staff report advises Costco to re-analyze traffic at their three proposed intersections: at the Turnpike, at High Meadows and Martin Highway, and at the proposed entrance on High Meadows. The report also states that Costco must base trip generation for their proposed out-parcel on the most intense or potential combined use, and notes that current traffic volume along Martin Highway east of Citrus Boulevard already exceeds 110 percent of its adopted level of

service capacity. These are issues that need to be addressed. Resident John Gray spoke at the Jan. 7 meeting and said that he had personally conducted two separate traffic counts at the Northlake Costco and the Sam’s Club in St. Lucie. He counted 800 cars per hour which would amount to 8,000 per day. These numbers more neatly match MacKenzie Engineering’s projected driveway trips in the report they drafted for Costco, and call into question other quotes that have recently been disseminated. Kelly Middleton, a Palm City resident for 22 years, said she was disappointed in the lack of development at the meeting. She is worried at Costco’s recurrent claim that as long as their application complies with code and regulation, the County has to allow them to build there. “This is America. I’ve voted in every election. We shouldn’t have to accept (Costco), if we don’t want to,” she said. Her message to the commissioners: “If you have to risk a lawsuit, risk it.” Regina Wood, another Palm City Resident for over 20 years, commented, “We don’t want Palm City state road 714 to look like Okeechobee Blvd. In West Palm Beach. This is Martin County and we try very hard to have a good quality of life here. Costco is a good store, and I think everybody agrees to that, but this is an inappropriate spot for it. So, most of the people I know in Palm City are opposed to it.” There is still no information regarding Costco’s second submittal, but they are required to resubmit within 90 days of the staff report, issued on Dec. 15.

COOKIE from page 2 Program is one great component of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience that all girls have in Girl Scouting. By limiting the time the sale runs, it allows the girls to have the opportunity to spend their proceeds on other programs and activities throughout the year and put all the skills their learned during the cookie sale to good use. Q: How are the proceeds used? A: Last year, troops earned almost $1 million in proceeds from the Cookie Sale Program. As a troop, the girls decide how to use those funds. Most troops use them to support all of their troop and program activities throughout the year. Many troops reinvest the proceeds locally by funding their community service projects. We’ve had troops donate supplies to the Humane Society, start a community garden and nutrition education program, create care bags for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, purchase official police badge for K-9 officers, create artwork for a homeless shelter — it’s an incredible list of things that our Girl Scouts do. Plus, they save their proceeds over multiple years to help fund once-in-a-lifetime trips around the country and around the world. Q: How do the girls gear up for this time of year, and is this the biggest sales initiative the Girl Scouts have? What are some others? A: Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida hosted a Cookie Boss and Cookie Entrepreneur program this year that allowed the younger girls and older girls the chance to explore and define their cookie selling goals, helped them craft and practice their customer service and public speaking skills and create and market their cookie booths. We also do training with our volunteers so they know how to sup-

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com port the girls throughout cookie time and correctly keep track of and document their cookie sales. There are rewards for girls that participate in the sale. We create the levels and pick the items for rewards based on direct feedback we get from the girls. There are some big rewards at the Extreme Team level – that’s girls who have sold 1,000-plus boxes of cookies. There are quite a few choices, including Beats by Dr. Dre headphones, a bike, theme park tickets and more. And, of course, there is always the goal of being the Council’s top seller. In 2014 and 2015, we had the same top seller — Amanda Kopelman from Troop 10442, who sold 6,100 boxes last year alone. Q: How do you help veterans? A: For the eighth year in a row, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida is sponsoring our Cookies for the Military program. The program provides an opportunity to donate boxes or cases of Girl Scout cookies to our service women and men domestically or overseas. Cookies for the Military is a great way for our community to support Girl Scouts while sending a “taste of home” to our troops. This year, the goal is to collect enough donations for 55,000 boxes of cookies. Because of the generosity of our community members, Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida has sent more than 268,000 boxes of cookies to our troops since 2009. GSSEF works with three organizations, Forgotten Soldiers Outreach, Operation Homefront and Soldier’s Angels, to coordinate the delivery of cookies to be included in the care packages they send to military personnel. Q: What is your best seller? A: Locally and nationally, the top selling cookie is the Thin Mint. We also have top Girl Scout Cookie Sellers – Amanda Kopelman sold 6,100 boxes of cookies last

Our second and third top sellers are Jaedyn Oren and Amanda Wysocki, respectively, who have also been the second and third top sellers for two years in a row. Q: In your opinion, what is the worst cookie ever made that the Girl Scouts didn’t bring back? A: That’s a tough one, because even those varieties that have only been sold for one or two

We have been very pleased with the response to our two newest cookies, Toffee-tastic and Rah Rah Raisin, which have both been well received by Girl Scout Cookie lovers. cluster of collisions near Hidden Oaks Middle School. None of those have been fatal. In January the county’s MPO hosted a bicycle and pedestrian safety planning meeting to discuss a recent crash-and-collision study the transportation-planning organization did. The MPO is working on crafting a county wide Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Plan. About 25 attended the meeting, and they took an electronic poll among other things. Almost as many were from Palm City as Stuart. The speaker was Vikas Jain, a consultant who did the MPO’s study of pedestrian and bicycle crashes and collisions from 2010 to 2015. He asked how many of the attendees had been involved in collisions or near collisions with vehicles while walking or cycling. Most had, 78 percent. “That’s a lot of people, eight out of 10,” he said. But there was a flip side to that coin. Jain reversed the question and asked how many had been involved in collisions or near collisions with pedestrians and bicyclists while driving. Again, the majority had been — 65 percent. Heading east of the St. Lucie River, vehicle-on-bicycle and -pedestrian collisions jump dramatically. There were several reported collisions on the Stuart side of the Veterans Memorial and Palm City bridges. “The urban core composed of Stuart is where all the crashes have been occurring the last five years,” Gomez said.

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com is very good,” Taylor said. “We get a lot of kids. We’ve had 30 kids out there.” The tournament is called 3D, because it uses 3D targets, basically animal mannequins. “It’s not a paper target,” Taylor said. Registration will start at 8 a.m., and shooting at 9 a.m. Registration at the event is $30 a shooter, $20 for those 12 and younger. The first 75 shooters will get gift bags. Additionally, two lunches comes with registration. Spectators, who are welcomed to come out, can buy lunches for $7 each. Taylor said there’ll be music, Chinese auctions and much more. “We recognize the top three of each category and have something for all the kids that participate,” Taylor said. “Those 14 and under.” For more, call the Martin County Farm Bureau office at (772) 2861038.

“The urban core composed of Stuart is where all the crashes have been occurring the last five years.” Bolivar Gomez There are several factors that likely contribute to that difference, Gomez said, but most amount to there simply being more interaction between automobiles and bicycles and pedestrians. However, there are other issues, such as education for and patience among drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians. Gomez said the MPO study looked at “hard data,” crashes and collisions reported to law enforcement. He said the planning agency needs the community to give its observations to develop a good safety plan. He said the public has several ways to discuss road safety issues with the MPO. “We always do public involvement and give the public an opportunity to speak,” he said. An opportunity folks have to talk to the MPO about pedestrian and bicycle issues is the Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee, BPAC, meetings, which are on the second Monday of every month at the Martin County Administrative Center, 2401 S.E. Monterey Road, Stuart, starting at 5 p.m. The next meeting is Feb. 8. The MPO has openings on its Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee for a homeowners association and cyclist representatives. They’re coming here illegally and their first act, coming to America, is to commit a crime, but they say we have them all.” Haitian migration to the U.S., with the largest influx coming by way of the Florida coast is not a new circumstance, but it is a persistent one. In May of 2015, another 19 Haitian migrants, including an infant, were arrested by Martin County Sheriff’s Deputies near Sailfish Point, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Snyder said that Martin County is especially susceptible to these landings, and for every one detected, several are coming in unnoticed. “They [smugglers] come in quietly,” Snyder said. “They get close to the shore, they let the immigrants get out, there is someone there to pick them up and off they go.” Snyder admits the illegals they catch are just a few of many that land in Martin County. He also feels this area is a popular dropoff spot, maybe the most popular, for specific reasons. “We have an undisturbed shore,” he said. “Almost all of our shore has no big condos, leading to a less inhabited coastline.” Snyder further explained there is

The Haitian immigrant population stood at 606,000 in 2012, up from 200,000 in 1990; Haitians now constitute 1.5 percent of the total U.S., according to migrationpolicy.org. MIGRANTS from page 18 took 228 illegal immigrants into custody in 2012, 225 in 2013, and 313 in 2014, according to Coast Guard officials. Snyder feels the upsurge is due to policies that have been instituted by the Obama administration in that the policy allows Haitian immigrants to wait for green cards while under illegal status here in the U.S. “We can arrest these people, but then we have to turn them over to the Border Patrol and Customs, who set a court date and release them into the society,” he said.

Snyder said they have less at stake than if they got a traffic ticket and didn’t pay it. “What you have here is a nation that has given up on its borders,” Snyder said. “If we had tough immigration laws, if we could arrest people who come into this country illegally, and sent them back, the flow [of illegals] would slow down tremendously.” Snyder said it’s as simple as all you have to do is get here and that’s it. We’ve become a nation without borders. “I’d do it if I were them,” he said. “I’d rather be here than Haiti.”

PALM CITY — The Martin County School Board took the opportunity to recognize the Palm City Chamber of Commerce for their continued support of the District’s students, teachers and schools at its meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Twenty-two years ago the Chamber along with members Barbara Essenwine and the Honorable Barbara Bronis founded the Palm City Chamber Adopt-a-Class program. It has served as a model for St. Lucie County, Palm Beach County and many others across the State of Florida. Since the program’s inception in 1991, nearly $1.2 million has been raised through the generous support of business and community members throughout Martin County. These funds have gone directly to support teachers and students for classroom enrichment. In December, Chamber Executive Director Carolyn Davi presented each of the Palm City school principals with a gift of $2,000 for their respective schools. “Chamber members have always been very supportive of education in Martin County and I am sure it will continue into the future,” said Davi. “We are proud of the fact that in 1998 and 2006 the Chamber’s Adopt-a-Class Program received awards from the State of Florida Commissioner of Education, among others throughout the years.”

STUART – Dennis and Karen O’Donovan were sitting outside at Cedar Point Plaza having frozen yogurt. Dennis looked up and noted that they were sitting in front of a theater. “I didn’t know there was a theater here,” Dennis said. “I saw a poster for ‘Speed the Plow’ and I was impressed to see it being produced in Florida.” The theater was the A.C.T. Studio Theatre, a small theater in Cedar Point Plaza. When Dennis realized they were offering acting classes, he signed up. “I trained in acting in New York,” he said. “I was a community theater guy. I was the stage manager, and did props and lighting, as well as acting. I acted with Plaza Theatrical, a local touring company. There’s been acting in my life (for) my whole life.” O’Donovan was cast in a show and wanted to get more involved. He became the stage manager, and when they discovered he had technical skills, he became the technical director. He developed a good relationship with theater owner Ed Wilhelms. “In June, he sat me down and said he wanted me to buy him out,” O’Donovan said. “He offered an irresistible deal. Karen and I

box theater, but when Dante Marelli designs the sets, they tend to be fully realized, detailed and quite beautiful.” Marelli also appears in the upcoming production of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf,” which will be presented Feb. 19-21, Feb. 26-28 and March 4-5. Karen O’Donovan said that the elaborate sets are less important because of the quality of the acting. “The bottom line is we could do any of these shows with two chairs and a table, because the acting, directing and cast are topnotch,” she said. Following ‘Virginia Woolf’ is the play “Match,” by Steven Belber. It will be presented in April. “It’s a drama with humorous moments,” Dennis O’Donovan said. “It’s warm and beautifully written. It’s about a choreographer at the end of his career being interviewed by a young couple. It’s purportedly for a thesis, but the couple has a different motive.” Giving any more of the plot would give away the story. Dennis O’Donovan said that they have brought together a stable of directors for next season, all of whom approached them. “We had prepared a list of plays we were considering and they brought suggestions,” he said.

“We’re hoping to do nine or 10 plays next year. After ‘Oleanna’, there will be two summer shows.” Dennis O’Donovan said that the goal is plays that offer something different. “We tend to go with things that are a little daring and a little less known,” he said. “They’re much less likely to be produced down here. They’re a little challenging, for a discerning audience. We don’t shy away from subject matter or language. There’s so much to choose from. We have over 40 plays for the nine or 10 shows next season and we’re getting suggestions every day. There’s a wealth of material and we like to have a mix of things.” The theater also offers acting classes if there is sufficient enrollment and they are thinking of a summer workshop that would bring in some people younger than the age 16 cutoff for plays. “There would be writing, directing, sound and lights, as well as acting and improv,” Dennis O’Donovan said. “We’re all about nurturing and encouraging talent.” A.C.T. Studio Theatre is located at 2399 S.E. Ocean Blvd., in Cedar Point Plaza, Stuart. Tickets are $24. For more information, call (772) 210-5373 or visit the website www.americanclassicstheatre. com.

First semester at arts school, a test of stamina Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

Editor’s Note: In a three- part series last year, Katie Rodgers applied to and was accepted at the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts at N.Y.U. Now, after her first semester, she continues the story. PALM CITY — Katie Rodgers had a nice end to her first semester at N.Y.U.’s Tisch School of the Arts. The family took a Canadian vacation, stopping first in Seattle to see the Seahawks play. Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson is a client of Katie’s father, sports agent Mark Rodgers, and Wilson has become a member of the family. He came to the Treasure Coast to speak to Katie’s graduation class at the Pine school last May. “He’s the most selfless man,” Katie said. “It was great catching up with him. He said he was praying for me.” Prayer is always welcome, but Katie has put in a lot of hard work since she arrived in New York last fall. Job one was getting used to living in New York. “I’ve always loved the city,” she said. “Now it’s every single day.”

She has an apartment in student housing on Fifth Ave., between Ninth and Tenth Aves. The building was a hotel in the 1930s and she said it still has that swanky hotel feel when you walk into the lobby. “When I look out the window, I can see Washington Square Park and the Empire State Building,” she said. “The sounds and sights invigorate me every day. I walk to class and when I’m there, I smile. I can’t help but smile. I’m so blessed and lucky. I love it.” Each performing arts program has its own approach to teaching. At Tisch, you have to walk before you can run. Freshman don’t perform. “Tuesdays and Thursdays are ‘Tisch days,’ Katie said. “I wake up and have ballet at 9 a.m. Before that, a couple of us get together for breakfast and walk over to a ballet class at a study on Second Ave. The class is an hour and 20 minutes and it’s the best way to start the day, waking up the mind and body and getting to sweat a little.” After ballet, it’s back to Tisch for voice class. That’s speaking, not

KATIE from page 27 singing. “It’s speaking and breathing and connecting breathing to the whole body,” Katie said “We visualize breathing into our feet.” That class lasts 90 minutes and then she breaks for lunch. She goes to the park for a bit of nature in the city. “I love to go to Washington Square Park and listen to jazz,” she said. “There’s a guy with a grand piano that he moves around.” From 1-3 p.m., Katie studies acting. “It’s amazing,” she said. “The first semester, we learn not to suppress our impulses when acting. It’s about being authentic and following your instincts. We’re learning it’s OK where we are, that it’s OK not to be perfect.

It’s such a safe environment and everyone is so supportive.” Tuesdays conclude with small group music, learning to sing in small groups, with harmonies and sight singing, which is singing without ever hearing the music. “That’s like the math and science of what we’re doing,” Katie said, “I’s not interpretation.” Thursdays are similar to Tuesdays, but they have vocal performance. “My teacher’s a Tony nominee,” she said. “We get a song that’s appropriate for our voice and treat it like a monologue. It’s about how to dissect a song, asking who you’re speaking to and why you’re singing this. I thought I knew this, but I never knew it this way.” On Thursdays, they also do musical theory and musical scales. Mondays and Wednesdays are academic days. “We have an introduction to

theater studies,” Katie said. “It’s theories of the theater by (people like) Brecht and Aristotle. It’s theater history. Every student has to take an essay class; at Tisch, it’s “Art in the World.” On Wednesdays, I also have a voice lesson.” Fridays Katie has three classes. She spends two hours in contemporary dance, and then goes to a speech class where they learn the International Phonetic Alphabet. “If you ever have an accent or need another language (in a role) you know how to speak,” she said. The day ends with music theory. It’s a full week, but Katie loves it. “It’s an active, heavy program,” she said. “We need the tools. I thought I knew a lot, but I knew so little. It’s so much more than the average student, but it doesn’t feel like it. I love the people and the teachers so it doesn’t feel like work. I have so much more to

learn about how to be true to our artistic selves. They say, ‘We don’t want another Meryl Streep, we want the next you.’ They’re training us to be the best we can be.” Katie has taken time to explore the city she calls ‘magical’ and has been able to see a lot of theater with student tickets. Now she is thinking about auditioning for summer stock. She would also love to study abroad: Tisch has a program with the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in England. The year has been a challenge, but it is a challenge she is glad she took. “I tried not to have expectations,” she said. “I’d take it as it is. It’s exceeded it all. It’s hard mentally and physically, but I love it. I feel so blessed and lucky to be studying in New York City. The pulse of it drives me. There’s something new every day.”
