Martin quietly greets Flu on same-sex marriage the

MARTIN COUNTY — Tuesday, Jan. 6, started quietly at the Peter L. Cheney Courthouse and Constitutional Office Center, Stuart. Shortly before 8 a.m., two men softly talked near the entrance awaiting the opening of the Clerk of the Circuit Court’s office. When the doors opened, they made their way through the security checkpoint without incident and entered the Clerk’s office and asked for a marriage license. They left about a half an hour later with one, and a few well-wishes from bystanders, to go do whatever else they had planned that day. The two politely declined an interview request. “It’s no big deal,” one said, shrugging his shoulders. Indeed. The first day clerks of courts throughout the state started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples wasn’t a big occasion in Martin. At least, not on the surface. There was no line of same-sex couples awaiting their chance to get marriage licenses. There were no demonstrators at the constitutional-officers center favoring or opposing same-sex marriage. The only fanfare was Linda Oliver and Dennis St. Martin standing on the sidewalk in front of the courthouse with flowers to give any couples getting marriage licenses that day. “It was a tough fight, and we’re PRSRT STD US POSTAGE PAID FORT PIERCE, FL PERMIT NO. 248 ECRWSS

St. Martin is her business’ wedding director. St. Martin is also a gay man in a 26-year relationship with Edward Alvarez. The two live in Port St. Lucie. They had a commitment ceremony 11 years ago, but it’s not legally recognized or binding. They planned on getting a marriage license after Tuesday. “It’s a good day,” St. Martin said. “It’s a great day.”
St. Martin said he was surprised that there weren’t several same-sex couples at the Clerk’s office first thing in the morning on the historic day. U.S. District Judge Robert Hinkle overturned Florida’s constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, and ordered clerks of courts to start issuing marriage licenses on Jan. 6. Martin’s clerk, Carolyn Timmann, was poised for a busy

MARTIN COUNTY — The Florida Department of Health in Martin County is in a big fight against a couple small bugs and needs everyone’s help. “We have several (influenza) surveillance systems in the county and three of them are elevated,” Grethel Clark, epidemiologist, said. “We’re seeing influenza A and influenza B.” The two strains of flu started hitting Martin hard in late December — there was a higher-than-average number of confirmed cases as 2014 wound down. “The weather and the season, we usually see a peak in January,” Clark said. “The flu season ends at the end of May,” Clark said. “Usually we see four or five weeks of higher activity, and then the numbers go down. I’m assuming we’ll have high activity for two or three weeks more.” It’s not too late to get a vaccine. “Vaccination, even though we’re in the middle of the season, is the best way to prevent spread,” Clark said. Renay Rouse, Health Department public information officer, said it’s pretty easy to get a flu shot these days.

Sheriff Snyder prepares to take the LEAD in 2015 Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
MARTIN COUNTY — The pillowcase burglars seem to have been put to bed for now, but Sheriff William Snyder said it’s no time for area law enforcement and residents to fall asleep. “We’ve been very fortunate; we’re
not getting killed with any major crime problems,” Snyder said. “We want to stay ahead of the curve.” There’s still plenty of crime in Martin County, even if many of the criminals aren’t. The sheriff said identity theft is rapidly growing. “It’s the most common crime we have today,” he said. “It’s awful.”
Identity thieves work internationally. A guy stealing a Palm City man’s credit-card information could be in Russia, where he’s unlikely to face capture and prosecution. It’s a high-reward, low-risk crime. “It’s extremely debilitating to the victim,” Snyder said.

Teen makes fitness a family affair Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PALM CITY — Nicole Neargarder began gymnastics when she was 5 years old. She competed competitively until she was 13, when she was at the gym working out and met International Fitness and Bodybuilding professional Amanda Marinelli. The teen fell in love with fitness as a discipline and began competing within three months. Today, the 15-year-old, a student at the Clark Advanced Learning Center, has won numerous awards, including overall fitness at the 2013 Southern States competition, first place in the same competition in 2014 and first place in Marinelli’s Gold Cup in 2013 and 2014. Nicole, who also takes classes at Indian River State College, hopes to be a physical therapist. Her love for fitness came easily. “Amanda gave me a CD of her competition,” the teen said. “It looked pretty cool. It was the first time I saw a fitness routine.” The two-minute routine combines strength, dance and gymnastics. There are required strength moves, hold flips and
splits that the judges look for. The moves test arm, leg and core strength. There is also a creative component. “I can wear anything,” Nicole said. “I can make up my own routine. In gymnastics, you have to be really serious. The audience gets bored. I can do anything I want. You can smile and wear your hair how you want. The judges don’t know your routine (in advance), so you have a lot of freedom.” For one recent competition, Nicole portrayed the characters from the movie, “Frozen,” starting as Olaf and changing as the routine progressed. Nicole competes with women a good deal older than she. “She’s probably the youngest out there,” said her mother, Denise Neargarder. “Most are in their 20s. It’s a sport you can do at any age, well into the 40s.” Nicole works out at Aerial Elite Cheer and Dance five or six days a week. Several days she works with trainers and she also volunteers to teach gymnastics to younger kids. Her fitness coach is International Fitness and Bodybuilding professional Maria Bellando of Miami, who trains and helps choreograph her fitness

The Neargarders travel to Miami a few times a month. While she was doing some research on fitness, Nicole found eight-time fitness Olympian Adela Garcia’s website. She sent Garcia, then Ms. Olympia, an email to tell her about her love of fitness and her win at the Southern States competition. Garcia responded by posting pictures of Nicole on her website. The two became friends and Garcia became an advisor.
In March, Nicole and her mother flew to Texas, where Garcia lives, to train at Garcia’s training center. Garcia has become a mentor for Nicole, who hopes to follow in Garcia’s footsteps. Nicole’s next goal is to get her Pro Card. “I want to be the youngest to get a Pro Card,” she said. “Seventeen

Southeast Florida Honor Flight and Stuart Air Show are teaming up to run a fundraiser. No, really, run. As in a running 3.10686 miles, better known as a 5K. The two not-for-profits are hosting the almost inaugural Honor Run on the Runway later this month. “There will be those extra fun elements you won’t see at your typical 5K,” Elisabeth Glynn, director of the air show, said. This is actually the second Honor Run on the Runway, but the first, in 2013, was done as part
of the Stuart Air Show events. This is the first time the run is being done separately of air show events. Todd Tucker, chairman of the local Honor Flight hub, said the results of the first run were underwhelming. “We found out pretty quickly having that run buried in the air show was rough for everyone,” he said. Organizers wanted to find out, if the run was scheduled a couple months after the annual air show, if it would take off. Both organizations are flying high with some big feathers they

“The vaccine is plentiful throughout the county,” she said. The flu can be much more than a few days home sick. There are more than 120,000 influenza hospitalizations annually in the United States. About 36,000 die every year from the malady in this nation alone. A particularly virulent mutation of H1N1 struck the world in 1918, infecting more than 500 million and killing about 50 million to 100 million. It was the largest death toll from a natural disaster ever. It’s commonly called the Spanish Flu. The very young, old, and those with compromised immune system are most at risk for serious complications from the flu. Clark said doctors’ advice to prevent flu is about the same as mothers give: eat right, get lots of sleep, exercise regularly and wash your hands often. Rouse said there’s another tip moms offered that’s right on. “If you are sick, stay at home, and keep those germs at home,” she said. With one exception: “As people start to experience symptoms, they should be in touch with their doctors,” Rouse said. To get a prescription for anti-viral medication, which can reduce the symptoms and longevity of flu.

RUN from page 4 picked up in 2014. The air show folks got word at the annual International Council of Air Shows convention in December that the U.S. Army Parachute Team, the Golden Knights, will be dropping into Stuart Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 this year. The crack paratroopers are headlining the 2015 Stuart Air Show. Earlier in 2014, Southeast Honor Flight was the only hub selected by the national Honor Flight Network to take Operation Neptune survivors to the National D-Day Memorial, Bedford, Va., to participate in the platinum anniversary commemorations of the momentous military operation. Southeast took 60. Operation Neptune is better remembered as D-Day — the June 6 Allied air and sea invasion of Normandy, France, in an all-out bloody crapshoot to take World War II to Germany. It launched Operation Overlord, which eventually ended World War II. “We both have aviation-themed organizations and wanted to do something together,” Glynn said. Tucker said Southeast Florida Honor Flight is placing high hopes on Honor Run raising big dollars this and in future years. “Obviously we’re very excited and we hope it’ll become a marquise event, not only for Stuart, but for Martin County,” he said. Because Honor Flight is in a race against time, there’s a lot of urgency around everything Honor Flight does. According to a 2008 Associated Press estimate, the once 16.1 million World War II veterans are dying at a rate of more than 1,100 a day. Now fewer than 2 million are living, according to the Department of
Veterans Affairs. No one has an exact daily death count, but the VA, AP and others have developed the same estimate by using long-form census data, VA data, and standard mortality tables. The VA estimates that America will have almost no World War II veterans by 2020, five years from now. The Honor Flight Network is a national program that takes World War II veterans to see the

national World War II Memorial, which opened on the National Mall in 2004. The flights began a year after it was erected. Honor Flight Southeast Florida, called a “hub,” started in 2009. “We’ve flown over 1,500 individual veterans to date,” Tucker said. Southeast has done 20 flights so far. The flights cost about $80,000, or nearly $1,000 for each veteran taken. Honor Flight figures the veterans paid their ways by serving in World War II and charges them nothing. Among those that got involved early on in Southeast Florida Honor Flight was Martin County Firefighters and Paramedics, International Association of Fire Fighters Local 2959, which leads what’s been the largest fundraiser for the flights: an annual fillthe-boot drive. Back in February last year, firefighters from Martin County and other fire-rescue agencies in the county went to parking lots and street corners to ask folks to fill firefighters’ boots with money. They raised more than $55,000. Tucker said dates for this year’s fill-the-boot drive haven’t been set, but it will be in February. Glynn said Honor Run runners will have World War II airplanes taking off and landing as they speed toward the finishing line. The run is the first stop of the Collings Foundation’s annual Wings of Freedom Tour. Those planes are a B-17 Flying Fortress, a B-24 Liberator and a P-51 Mustang, named Betty Jane.
“We are actually excited that the Road to Victory (Military Museum) will be bringing some of their authentic World War II equipment to put on the course,” Glynn said. After the run, participants will get a quasi-USO show in an airport hangar with everything but Bob Hope. The P-51 is the special guest for Dinner with Betty Jane. “Our party guests will be dancing and partying with this plane named Betty Jane,” Glynn said. Registration is $55. Organizers opted for a flat fee for all runners this year. Glynn said in coming years there may be veteran and possibly other discounts. “(The fee) does include the full dinner, and that’s not a hamburger, or hot dog,” Glynn said. “It’s a nice dinner.” Glynn added, “We are working with MCM Timing and Results. (Runners) will have their official times. Everyone participating will have their medals.” And they will have T-shirts. Folks who want to just enjoy the dinner and show can do so. The cost is $30 a ticket. Honor Run on the Runway will be on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 4 p.m. The dinner party starts at 5 p.m. For more, and to register, visit www.stuartairshow.com/index. php/1st-annual-honor-runon-the-runway/. SNYDER from page 2 To combat the problem, the Sheriff’s New Year’s resolution is more town hall meetings and using social media to educate folks about the crime and the defenses. He likes deputizing the entire county to fight crime, because it works. “I’m going to run for governor and bring this statewide,” he jested. On a serious note, Snyder said that in 2015 the department will roll out LEAD, Law Enforcement Against Drugs, a drug-education and prevention program similar to D.A.R.E., Drug Abuse Resistance Education. Snyder said the Sheriff’s Office can tailor a program to the specific drug and crime issues it’s finding in the community, rather than taking a national approach that’s hit or miss. “We’re in the middle of developing our curriculum,” the sheriff said. “We think we can do even a better job with presentation. I’m not criticizing D.A.R.E. A lot of people believe in it.” But D.A.R.E. has a big downside: cost. Daren the Lion doesn’t come cheap and neither do other D.A.R.E. materials. Snyder took the helm at the Martin County Sheriff’s Office in on Jan. 8, 2013. At the time, pillowcase burglaries were all the menace. Snyder launched into a seemingly endless series of town-hall meetings educating folks about what should spike their suspicions and get them calling the cops. And suspicious-vehicle calls increased dramatically while pillowcase burglaries decreased into seeming oblivion. He also aggressively promoted the department’s Facebook page. That continued into 2014. “Our Facebook continues to grow,” Snyder
“Our Facebook continues to grow,” Snyder said. “It’s over 16,000 (likes) now, from the 1,400 I started with.” No, Snyder isn’t into posting selfies. The Facebook page has been a powerful force multiplier, a way to get the public’s eyes and mobile phones helping out. For example, on Dec. 17 the Sheriff’s Office posted about a suspected arson even as the fire was burning. That was at 11:03 p.m. By 4 p.m. the next day, the department announced an arrest in the case. said. Whether the Facebook post helped investigators locate the suspect wasn’t mentioned, but in another situation on Aug. 21, the department posted on Facebook it was looking for a gold truck in Hobe Sound after a girl reported that the driver attempted to pick her up as she walked home. The department quickly got tips from its Facebook post and found the truck and driver. After talking with him and the girl’s family, detectives determined that he was a neighbor and no criminal acts were attempted. Also in 2014, the Florida House and Senate passed a bill Sheriff William Snyder proposed that adds to pillowcase burglars’ legal risks. It gives investigators more power to add charges, and judges greater power to increase bails, when burglars cross county lines to ply their trade. In an interview before the bill’s passage, Snyder said he took a page from the feds’ play book and applied it to the state. “The FBI can (charge additional felonies) if
you go from one state to another,” he said. Snyder said that in 2015 he aims to further solidify his deputize-the-county approach to law enforcement by getting more neighborhood watches up and going. “I want to see every eligible neighborhood in Martin County become part of Crime Watch,” he said. The National Sheriff’s Association started the National Neighborhood Watch, sometimes called “Crime Watch,” in 1972. Many point to the 1964 brutal murder of Catherine “Kitty” Genovese and rising crime rates as the impetus for Neighborhood Watch. Press reports at the time held that almost 40 neighbors stood by as Genovese was killed, yet none attempted to intervene even by calling police. The accuracy of the reports is questioned by many, but the concept of a paralyzed bystander effect dubbed “Genovese syndrome” was popularized. Neighborhood Watch was introduced as an antidote. Neighborhood Watch programs use different methods, some more organized than others, but the idea is the same. Neighbors agree to watch one another’s properties and report suspicious activities to police. MARRIAGE from page 1 day. “I had no idea, so I doubled up on my staff,” she said. And the evening before had a staff meeting to go over the rules for issuing same-sex couples the marriage licenses. The marriage license forms — which are created by the state — had the words “bride” and “groom.” Timmann said her office can’t alter the forms, but she instructed staff to allow customers to strike the words and replace them with those of their choosing, such as “spouse.” Timmann said there are some in the office who don’t wish to handle marriage licenses for same-sex couples due to religious beliefs, but that arrangements were made to ensure there are no delays for customers. “My feeling is that this is about treating everybody equally,” she said. Florida is the 36th state to get same-sex marriage. It was ground zero for opposition to the expansion of antidiscrimination laws in the late ‘70s, following the Stonewall riots in 1969 that launched the so-called “gay rights movement.” In 1977, singer Anita Bryant started Save Our Children in South Florida to overturn an ordinance in Dade County, now Miami-Dade, that banned discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodation due to sexual orientation. The coalition succeeded in getting the ordinance overturned and gained national prominence. Among other things, it backed a proposed law in California that would have required the termination of gay

Altering the form in such a manner may result in BVS rejecting the form. Q: What if the Groom objects to the Bride’s surname and wants his or her own noted? A: BVS suggests writing in the groom’s surname in the space on that line, to the right of the groom’s name. Q: Will BVS be modifying the DH 743 marriage application forms?

public-school teachers. The movement for same-sex marriage started in the early ‘70s when a Minnesota couple petitioned that state’s Supreme Court for the right to get married. That court found that the state’s prohibition on same-sex marriage didn’t violate the U.S. Constitution, as the petitioners claimed. The U.S. Supreme Court declined to take up the case. In 2003, the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that denying same-sex couples the right to marry violated that state’s constitution. By 2004, Massachusetts started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples. There was a wave of states proposing and passing constitutional prohibitions against same-sex marriages. In 2008, Florida’s voters overwhelmingly passed the Florida Marriage Amendment. More recently, there’s been a wave of courts overturning the voter-passed bans. Any couples looking to marry in Martin County will have to find notaries or ministers to perform the ceremonies. The Clerk’s office stopped performing ceremonies last year, due to staffing shortages. Timmann said she’s unsure why same-sex marriage started on such a humdrum note in Martin County. There are numerous explanations. Many couples may have already traveled to other states and married, for example. As to the lack of any apparent organized opposition, she said that seems to be rooted in the county’s character. “I think Martin County is respectful of other people’s privacy,” she said.

QUESTIONS from page 8 If so, how long will it take to get the new forms? A: In conversations with the BVS, the association is told that the Department of Health will go through a rulemaking process in order to revise the form. We are not aware yet how long that may take, but rulemaking is not quick and it could take months. The association is awaiting more specific information on this from the department. Q: What should the Clerk do if a same sex couple admits they were married in another state and now want to be married in Florida? A: If married in another state, applying for a Florida marriage license is not legally required. If a couple is married in one state, it will be recognized in the other states, so long as it was not a legally prohibited marriage. That said, the applicants, if married

They will accept the marriage record form in these types of situations for same sex couples getting re-married to each other. Q: What should a Clerk do if after issuing the license, the applicants have the ceremony without the three-day wait and have not gotten a waiver from a county judge? In my reading of the law, Clerks do not have the authority to waive the three-day requirement unless there has been a delegation or order from the courts to waive it. Do we record the license or return it as not valid? If a couple has submitted valid certificates of completion of a premarital preparation course, the effective date of the marriage license shall not be delayed. Exceptions to the delayed effective date must be granted to non-Florida residents seeking a marriage license from the state and for individuals asserting hardship. Marriage license fee waivers shall continue to be available to all eligible individuals. For state residents, a county court judge issuing a marriage license may waive the delayed effective date for good cause. PALM CITY — Perhaps Palm City will get the nickname Cycle City. John Goings, president of the Treasure Coast Cycling Association, said it’s ideal for long-distance biking events. “Three stop lights, and we’re out of town and heading west,” he said. There are two things hardcore bicyclists detest: cars and stops. There’s one thing they love: undisturbed riding. Palm City’s LCpl Justin J. Wilson (US Marines) Memorial Foundation, Justin’s Wings, and the association are gearing up to go 105 miles on March 22 to benefit military families and veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder. The fourth annual Riding for Heroes century will be on the fifth anniversary of Wilson’s death while serving in Operation Enduring Freedom in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Wilson moved to Palm City with his family shortly before enlisting in the military. His mother, Frances “Fran” Wilson, is comforted that the family
will have lots of company on the anniversary of her son’s death. “It’s, I guess with grieving, just to know that on the anniversary of his death I won’t be alone, but there’ll be a lot of people there riding for him. That just makes it a little easier. Additionally, Wilson’s parents in-law are planning a handball tournament at the starting and finishing place for the bicycle ride: Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Park, 2050 S.W. Mapp Road, Palm City. The Martin County Commission named the park in Wilson’s honor in 2011. Wilson was an avid handball player, and played at that park before joining the Marine Corps. “I unfortunately only got to play a few times with him,” Wilson’s father-in-law, Cadell McVeigh, said. “I was waiting for him to get back (from Afghanistan) to play some more. He loved handball.” McVeigh said in previous years the handball tournament attracted players from as far away as Chicago. The annual bicycle ride and handball tourney, are the foundation’s only fundraisers. Last year, the two events raised about $12,000. Justin’s Wings’

primary mission is to help families that need financial assistance get to loved ones’ important military events, such as deployments and returns. However, Fran said that she’s looking at adding a mission this year. “Justin, if he’d survived, would have been severely injured,” Fran said. “I’ve been looking at the service dogs and how they help with (post-traumatic stress disorder).” Fran said Justin’s father, Lance, and she have been talking to Heidi Spirazza, founder and executive director of Paws 4 Liberty, Fort Worth, about funding the training of a PTSD service dog that would be given to a qualified veteran. “It’s a lot of money to train service dogs,” Fran said. “My only stipulation is the dog be named after Justin.” The foundation named after Justin Wilson has an expense to cover first — renting the park named after him, the Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Park. “I have to pay $300 for the park, for Justin’s Park,” Fran said. Kevin Abatte, Martin County’s Parks & Recreation director, said

RIDE from page 10 the park-usage fee is a matter of the County Commission’s policies. Abatte said the commission can waive the fee if it chooses, but the foundation would have to make the request. “I sympathize, because the park was named after their son,” he said. But, it’s not as simple as just waiving the fee, Abatte said. This fiscal year the county will pay about $3,300 for every developed acre of park space. That money has to come from somewhere. He said that the parks and rec department counts on user fees for a large part of its operating budget, and often the county has seem like Scrooge.

“Last year, we had more than 200 (fee-waiver) requests,” Abatte said. “If we did every request, we’d be giving away $100,000.” The department collected about $525,000 in facility fees last fiscal year. Most of that is individuals reserving park facilities for large family events, such as weddings, reunions and birthdays, but some is from not-for-profit organizations renting park space for various events. Commissioner Doug Smith, Jensen Beach, voted to rename the park for Wilson back in 2011, what he said is one of his proudest votes. Nevertheless, he said the county has to consider consis-

tency when considering various fee-waiver requests. “If they didn’t charge fees, we’d be closing parks at the end of the day,” he said. “That’s what it boils down to.” “You can’t imagine how many (fee-waiver) requests I get a year, and they’re all very good requests.” However, he said the Lance Cpl. Justin J. Wilson Memorial Foundation getting a waiver for using Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Park is arguably unique and doing it wouldn’t throw the policy doors open to granting other groups’ waiver requests. “If the parks department were to come to the County Commission and ask for us to pay the fee out of reserves, I’m happy to support that,” he said. Abatte, who is a triathlete considering participating in this year’s Riding for Heroes, said he’ll call the Wilsons and see what options there are to help them use that park without payment. In addition to Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Park, the ride organizers also use Timer Powers Park, 21479 S.W. Citrus Blvd., Indiantown. Goings said Riding for Heroes is the cycling association’s largest event of the year. There are four bicycling routes for riders to pick from. Those taking the 105- and 80-mile routes will leave at 7:30 a.m. Those taking the 60-mile route will take off at 8:15 a.m. The shortest route, 40 miles, will start at 9 a.m. “For the last four years, we’ve focused on Riding for Heroes,” Goings said. He said that the association used to have a large ride that started in Jensen Beach, the Ocean to
the Lake Ride, which went to Lake Okeechobee and back to benefit the Red Cross. However, he said starting and finishing long rides east of the St. Lucie River was getting less attractive to organizers and riders, due to increasing traffic and a shortage of bicycle lanes in heavy traffic areas. He said the Wilsons contacted the association for help organizing a large ride about the time it was looking around for options to start centuries west of the St. Lucie. “It takes a lot of effort to put on one of these things, and Fran had a great story about her son and what she was trying to do, “Goings said. There was that added bonus, Goings said. “This was starting in Palm City,” he said. Martin Downs Boulevard has wide bicycling lanes. Mapp Road and Martin Highway east of I-95 are getting them. Mapp’s bicycle lanes will be between Martin Highway and Martin Downs. Martin Highway heading west of 95 has a wide shoulder that doubles as a bicycle lane. Citrus Boulevard north of Martin Highway has bicycling lanes, too. Additionally, Palm City is close to rural roads. All of these features make Palm City very attractive to ride organizers. Registration and packet pickup for Riding for Heroes will be on Saturday, March 21, at Vine & Barley Palm City, 2951 High Meadow Ave., Palm City. Advance registration with guaranteed T-shirts is $35. Check in will open on Sunday, March 22, at 6:30 a.m. For additional information, visit www.justinswings.org/event/riding-for-heroes-march-22-2015.

‘Broadway’s best’ helps raise funds for theater STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
MARTIN COUNTY — It’s a tradition in the theater: when you need to raise money, you put on a show! On Jan. 16, Peter Jones and a few of his talented friends will take the stage at the StarStruck Theatre in a show conceived of and directed by Jennifer Jones. The gala, “Broadway’s Best,” will raise money for the new nonprofit the two have formed to purchase the building they now rent and turn it into an arts center that will remain in Stuart in the years to come. Jennifer Jones talked about the fun of planning the special evening. “I’m so excited about it,” she said. “Peter is going to be live on stage. He’s always an audience favorite. He’ll be playing the piano and singing. We also have to stars of the upcoming “La Cage aux Folles,” Josh Rhett Noble and Doug Jabara. Noble has appeared in several StarStruck professional productions, including “Company,” and “Annie.” He’s flying in for this show. “I met Josh over 10 years ago,”

Jones said. “He was driving through Stuart and read about an audition and popped in. I know Doug Jabara from high school. We did all the shows together. Both have had phenomenal careers.” The production will include songs from a variety of shows that range from “Gypsy” to “Les Miserables.” Singer Shelley Keelor will sing “Send in the Clowns” and “Broadway Baby.” Jones, Noble and Jabara will sing, “Standing on the Corner,” and Jones will sing a special arrangement of “Over the Rainbow.” “It’s exciting,” Jennifer Jones said about the special song. “We have fun moving the music in different ways. It will be a highlight of the evening.” Jones said that the gala is looking to the future, but it is also a celebration of 15 years of Star Struck. “This show is a love-in,” she said. “When I told some of my actor friends and alumni, everyone was so excited to come back. They will sing ‘Season of Love,’ from ‘Rent’ and ‘One Day More,’ from ‘Les Miserables.’ Different people I’ve worked with want to be part of this exciting night. It adds a special and unique touch. “It’s very much StarStruck. We
Once you’re part of StarStruck, it’s a part of who you are. That’s why students feel it is their second home and why they want to come back.” The evening will begin at 7 p.m. with cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. Show time is 8 p.m., and there will be a meet-and-greet with the performers after the show. For Jones, while this is a celebration of StarStruck, it is also about the broader goal. “We want to raise the money to buy the building so that theater can stay here forever,” she said.
Josh Rhett Noble is one of the performers joining Peter Jones in ‘Broadway’s Best,’ a fundraising gala at StarStruck Theatre Jan. 16.
