John Haddox reveals Shoes in the news re-election bid Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — County Commissioner John Haddox is running for re-election. Haddox said he’s not for politically labeling himself, but others have handed him one. “I’m being labeled as a ‘populist,’” he said. “I guess that means I’m in touch with the entire community.” Haddox’s reelection bid comes as Martin faces several major issues. One example is All Aboard Florida, the proposed high-speed passenger train that’s slated to cut a swath through the Treasure Coast on a Miami to Orlando route 32 times a day. No Martin County elected official or political candidate is going to favor the train, because there’s too much evidence it will have a deleterious effect on the region. But Haddox said he’s done more than bemoan the train. “I’ve led the way in opposition to All Aboard Florida at a government level,” Haddox said. Earlier this year Haddox proposed creation of a $1.4 million county fund to pay for studies, legal actions and other advocacy against All Aboard Florida. The Martin County Commission unanimously nodded at its creation. The odd number, $1.4 million, is 1 percent of the county’s ad valorem tax collection. On the same day, Indian River County’s commission voted to put $2.7 million over two years into an ante for combating All Aboard Florida. While opposition to the train is popular in Martin County, Haddox has taken strong stances on dividing issues during his freshman

John Haddox term. He was elected in 2012 and this is his first reelection bid. “I’m still a very strong proponent of our (community redevelopment areas), because I think they have a strong opportunity to increase our economic development,” he said. The county’s Community Redevelopment Agency and its seven community redevelopment areas have been under increasing fire from some in the public and three members of the County Commission: Sarah Heard, Ed Fielding and Ann Scott. The three voted against proposed road and swale work to start the decade-old proposed Mapp Road Town Center Design, a New-Urbanism concept to turn Mapp into a pedestrian-friendly downtowneque area from Martin Highway to Martin Downs Boulevard. Haddox and Doug Smith voted for the pro-

MARTIN COUNTY — Deputy Oscar was sworn in on Friday, Oct. 9. Oscar emigrated from England to take a position at the Martin County Sheriff’s Office. He’s only 2 years old, but already has impeccable schooling in the art and science of olfactory discovery. In other words, Oscar can use his keen sniffer to smell drugs 1.6 kilometers or 1 mile away. Oscar is brown and white spotted and his breed is Springer spaniel. “(Oscar is) a great white shark,” Sheriff William Snyder said at the ceremony. “Just like a shark he’s looking for blood in the water.” The job is an extremely important one in stopping the surge of drugs in the communities and in schools, but many don’t realize it is a hazardous one for K9s. So far this year, about one in five officer deaths nationally were K9s, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. Three of the K9 officers were shot to death. Another was stabbed. One was accidentally poisoned.

Locally the last K9 officer to die in the line of duty was Vasko in 2004. The St. Lucie County K9 officer was shot while apprehending a suspect. He was posthumously awarded the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Medal of Honor and Life Saving Award. The memorial lists 30 K9 officers

Martin County ups tech to fight breast cancer Lisa Barry

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

PALM CITY— October marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month across the country. It is a month to raise awareness for a disease that is diagnosed in a woman every two minutes in the United States alone, according to the Susan G. Komen non-profit breast cancer organization. Martin Health System is gearing up to offer area breast cancer patients “Intraoperative radiation therapy” (IORT) that tackles all of a patient’s radiation in a single 30-minute procedure while the patient is under anesthesia for surgery. “This is a new type of targeted radiation that we will administer while the patient is asleep. When they wake up from surgery, they’re done with radiation,” said Martin Health breast surgeon Dr. Craig Wengler. Dr. Wengler is in practice at Martin Health with his father, Dr. Edward Wengler, who has been performing breast surgery for more than 30 years. The two surgeons now see patients from

Port St. Lucie to Palm City and all over Martin County. Prior to IORT, a breast cancer patient would commonly undergo surgery to remove cancer, and then follow surgery with six to seven weeks of return visits for radiation treatment. After that, the patient may begin chemotherapy, anti-hormone pills or a variety of other treatment options. With IORT, a woman will have finished her radiation treatment before she wakes up from her initial surgery. “Women really just want to move on with their lives,” said Dr. Wengler. “With [IORT], they can avoid problems they run into with traveling to a center that has radiation, or decrease the amount of work hours they have to miss.” The new radiation option also

focuses on the area of the breast where the cancer was concentrated, rather than having to expose the entire breast to radiation after an operation, according to Dr. Wengler. IORT is covered or partially covered in many cases by insurance, and Martin Health will begin offering the treatment in December. An obstetrics and gynecology office in Tradition that refers to Martin Health for breast surgery has begun offering a 3D mammogram proven to cut down on return visits for patients with concerning scans. “We are one of the only areas between West Palm and north of Vero Beach to Melbourne that has the first digital, 3D mammography,” said Dr. Brandy Becker of Women’s Health Specialists. The new technology may be better at diagnosing breast cancer

“This is a new type of targeted radiation that we will administer while the patient is asleep. When they wake up from surgery, they’re done with radiation.” Martin Health breast surgeon Dr. Craig Wengler earlier on, and cuts down on the number of return visits women make for mammograms that give unclear results, according to preliminary research. “It’s always offered to patients, but never pushed or required,” Becker said. Health insurance companies have yet to validate the technology, so for now, it is still an out-of-pocket cost to patients. The 3D mammography takes approximately three to 10 seconds longer than a traditional mammogram and allows doctors to move and manipulate the images to see the scan from more

The next day, I did a breast self-exam, something I didn’t do often enough. I found a mass the size of a pea. I made an appointment with my gynecologist for the next day. She was pretty sure it was a cyst, but she sent me for a mammogram. It was inconclusive, so they did other tests that were also inconclusive. Everyone still thought it was a cyst…but. The radiologists decided to do a needle biopsy and I called my husband, who was at work, to come and be with me. The doctors and I joked and one said if she were a betting woman, she’d bet on a cyst. Then the needle went in and the mass was rock hard. The temperature in the room dropped as everyone looked up. I asked her what she thought now and she said to hope for a miracle. It didn’t happen. On the following Tuesday, after a very long weekend, I was back at work and insisted that the doctor call me there. I couldn’t stand sitting home. We were so busy that when the phone rang and I picked it up, I’d forgotten about the call. When I identified myself, she told me I had cancer. I had an elderly couple at my register and I looked up at them, dropped the phone and said, “I have to go. I have cancer.” Cancer. It is one of the most

City sprang into action for missing autistic boy — new response program STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — On Oct. 7 at 12:21 p.m., the Martin County Sheriff’s Office posted on its Facebook page that Brandon Lawrence, a 12-year-old, was missing from Hidden Oaks Middle School. “We had a tremendous response from the citizens of Martin County,” Sheriff William Snyder said. “We had construction workers leaving their jobs to help search.” About 25 minutes later, the Sheriff’s Office posted the good news that Brandon was located and OK. In addition to using social media, the department used the County’s Code Red system to call, text and email Palm City residents to watch for the youth. It also launched a helicopter, and had a search dog loaned by a Palm Beach County agency on the way. Snyder said any time a child comes up missing the Sheriff’s Office will have an “overwhelming response.” But, there was the unusual concern with Brandon. His family reported that he has autism

“Having that information is so helpful to us when responding. The approach for us is different when we’re dealing with someone with disabilities.”

Autism often includes extreme sensory sensitivities that can trigger overwhelming emotions that overtake rational thinking. “I think that changes the whole dynamic,” Snyder said. “Someone with autism may be in greater jeopardy than others.” By coincidence or synchronicity, the Martin County Sheriff is in the middle of creating a program for families of and people with disabilities. “We’ve been calling it the Disabilities Awareness Program,” Trisha Kukuvka, public affairs coordinator, said. She added, “Having that information is so helpful to us when responding. The approach for us is different when we’re dealing

Snyder said he doesn’t know if other jurisdictions are doing it,

Such a plan involves continual investment in securities regardless of fluctuating price levels of such securities. posed project. What’s less controversial so far but could become a political powder keg is Haddox’s support for moving the Martin County Fairgrounds. It’s now on county-owned land on Southwest Dixie Highway, Stuart. Haddox wants to move the fair and sell that land to get it on tax rolls. “That is an ideal 20 acres of general commercial or light industrial property that could provide tax revenue for years to come,” he said. Haddox has withheld judgement about where the best place is to move the fair, but Jay Spicer, the fair’s manager, and others have pointed to Palm City — Citrus Avenue north of Martin Highway. What’s not controversial is Martin County has an infrastructure-maintenance backlog. What’s controversial is the best approach to getting that work done. The backlog is at about $270 million according to county staff. “When you’re looking at a $270 million deficit, you’re not looking one or five years out,” Haddox said. “We’ve got to look 10, 20 years out.” In 2014 voters narrowly nixed a proposed local-option 1 cent sales tax that the commission hoped would reduce the backlog. That was in a 3-2 vote. Haddox opposed the proposal. He wasn’t opposed to a local-option sales tax. Haddox said at meetings he felt that the commission should have asked voters for a five-year instead of four-year duration, and adopted less stringent language about how it could be used. After voters handed the commission a defeat on the sales tax, it’s been in a quandary about how to address the infrastructure backlog. It recently voted — 3 to

but hopes they are or will. “What we do is put (given information) in our CAD system, Computer Aided Dispatch system,” Snyder said. Kukuvka said the program is about two months old, but the Sheriff’s Office hasn’t promoted it heavily yet as it works out details. “We’ve been to a couple different events and promoted this and gotten a good response,” she said. Kukuvka said there are about 30 registered so far. In most cases families and caretakers have done the registration to help protect children. “The majority are autism, autism spectrum disorder,” Kukuvka said. Cops aren’t the only ones who talk to emergency dispatchers. “This goes beyond law enforce-

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com 2 — to raise the property-tax rate. Haddox opposed the tax increase and proposed creation of a citizens budget advisory committee to help the commission make budget cuts. “What I have learned is we have a wealth of local talent to give a voice to and we need to tap into that expertise,” Haddox said. However, Haddox said that a citizens advisory committee, if created, won’t be able to pull rabbits out of hats. He said a broader tax base is critical to resolving the maintenance backlog and preventing another. “There are many ways to resolve this project backlog,” he said. “You can cut (budgets), you can increase taxes, but to me one of the key tools is we need to be more aggressive on economic development in our urban service boundary.” The service boundary is the area prescribed in the Martin County Comprehensive Growth Management Plan, frequently called the “Comp Plan,” for delivery of municipal services such as water. It’s made to prevent urban sprawl. Haddox said, if re-elected, that he’ll likely push for two changes to how the commission is run. First, he’d like to add evening meetings at least monthly. The commission usually meets at 9 a.m. until it completes its agenda, usually around 4 p.m. He’d also like to add a public comment time around noon. The commission has public comment at the start and end of meetings. Haddox said a monthly evening meeting and public-comment time toward the middle of the daytime meetings could urge more working parents with children to speak to the commission. “I think that is a group that is neglected in local politics,” Haddox said. “I strongly feel we have to reach out to our families.” ment,” Kukuvka said. “It goes to medical calls, too.” Kukuvka said a quadriplegic got on the registry, so first responders would know when they go to the house that a wheelchair user is there. During a crisis such as a fire, that information could mean life or death. “It’s for mental and physical disabilities,” Kukuvka said. The information given to the Sheriff’s Office gets protection from laws such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, HIPAA. Snyder said the registry benefits everyone, cops, firefighter/EMTs and the public. “Let us know to be careful,” he said. “Tell us what you want us to know and how to proceed and we’ll do our very best.” For more, call Kukuvka at (772) 320-4737.

angles Becker said. “People can think of it as a kind of a CAT Scan,” she added. “I really advocate for the 3D mammogram if a patient frequently has problems with coming back and forth for mammograms in the past,” Becker said. Some women have a harder time with mammograms than others, and some are repeatedly called back because something in their mammogram triggered concern. Early data shows the 3D mammography may decrease return visits 40- to 60-percent. The exact statistics on how well the new scan better detects different kinds of cancer at different stages is still unclear, Becker said. Data shows that advancing research and technology is helping extend the lives of breast cancer patients, Dr. Wengler said. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is down 34 percent since 1990. “We might be finding just as many or more breast cancers, but our mortality rate is down 34 percent since 1990. That, to me, says it all,” said Dr. Wengler. “We find cancer more often because our screening methods are so good…and people are living longer.” Regular screening for breast cancer is crucial to early detection and successful treatment. Taking that first step may make all the difference when it comes to successfully fighting off the cancer, Dr. Wengler said. Women over the age of 70 and women who have a close family member with a history of breast cancer typically have the highest risk of developing breast cancer. Still, only about 10- to 15 percent of breast cancer patients have a first-degree relative with the disease according to Dr. Wengler. Dr. Becker suggests women use an online risk assessment tool at www.cancer.gov/bcrisktool to help calculate their lifetime risk

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com at home. For average risk patients, women should begin annual screenings around 40-years-old. Higher risk patients should discuss earlier screenings with their doctor, Becker said. Before ever walking into a doctor’s office, women can and should examine their own breasts for changes and abnormalities, according to Dr. Becker. She said being aware of one’s own breast texture and tissue density can help raise red flags when something changes. Any new or changing “hard mass,” reddening skin, or thickening or dimpling texture should be reported to a doctor. Once a sign of breast cancer is detected in a scan taken at an Ob/Gyn office like Dr. Becker’s, patients are referred to a breast surgeon specialist for a biopsy. “This process of waiting for results can be very stressful for women but one should be reassured not to worry too soon as this is a very common occurrence,” Dr. Becker said. “Approximately 10 percent of screening mammograms require additional evaluation and 90 percent returned as benign. The fear of needing more imaging or biopsy should however not dissuade patients from undergoing screening process as there is still a benefit of 15 to 20 percent reduction in breast cancer mortality from routine screening detection.” Many women put off screenings due to cost, Dr. Becker noted. However, the availability of free scans and discounted scans are generally increased during the month of October for Breast Cancer Awareness, giving women without general access to affordable care or health insurance an opportunity to take preventative measures against the disease. A list of resources, events, and fundraisers can be searched by county at www.floridabreastcancer.org. “Anything you can do for preventative care is always better than playing catch up after a late diagnosis,” Becker said.

The Sheriff’s Office’s post about him generated more than 500 likes in just a couple days. Snyder said Oscar is doing a great work. Snyder added, “It’s worth it for us as a society to push back against drugs to make our schools safer and to push back to discourage drug use.” There’s no word on whether Oscar drinks Earl Grey tea, enjoys rugby, or stands when “God Save the Queen” is performed, but Snyder said he does bark with an English accent. “Oscar is so friendly, people just want to play with him,” Snyder said. “They have no idea.”

SURVIVOR from page 6 went with me because she’s an excellent note taker. It’s really good to have someone like that with you because you are still in shock. It’s hard to remember details. After the surgeon left, confirming that I’d have a lumpectomy, we were left with the nurse. My mom and the nurse started talking about the surgery and suddenly I said, “I don’t have to do this.” They both stared. They knew that as a medical writer, I was aware of the consequences of not acting. I said, “I can wait, and when it becomes bad, I can go to Paris and throw myself off the Pont Neuf.” The nurse and my mother looked at me as if I’d lost my mind. I kept saying that I didn’t have to do it. Finally, they got it. Both of them told me that of course, I didn’t have to do it. That’s what I wanted to hear. I was going to do it, but I wanted it to be my decision. So much of my destiny had suddenly been wrested completely out of my control. I desperately needed to believe that this decision was mine. There is a message here for anyone with a diagnosis of cancer. You can’t control the diagnosis. You can listen to the options and, with the help of your doctors and family, choose the treatment

Practice preventive care through screenings. If you suspect something is not right, don’t delay. You cannot will cancer away, but you can fight it. You owe it to yourself and those who love you to give it the best you’ve got. I am grateful to the doctors who saved my life, the wonderful nurses who taught me the tricks of the trade that made day-to-day life easier, my darling husband, who cared for me so tenderly and family and friends who supported me. MARTIN COUNTY — At their recent annual awards luncheon, House of Hope presented Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida with the Fabric of Hope - Organization Award, the highest honor House of Hope presents each year. Along with the Organization Award, Fabric of Hope - Individual Awards were presented to Girl Scout volunteer Debbie Geiger and Girl Scout Madison Manning. Girl Scouts has been a longstanding supporter of House of Hope and its mission to fight hunger and hardship in Martin County by hosting an annual food drive. For more than 15 years, the Girl Scout Food Drive has been impacting the Martin County area by collecting over 40,000 pounds of donated food items to date. Girl Scout volunteer Debbie Geiger, one of the Fabric of Hope Individual Award recipients, started the Girl Scout Food Drive when her daughter was a Girl Scout. Debbie now has a granddaughter who is a Girl Scout and continues to coordinate the food drive every year by rallying Martin County troops to collect food and donations to support House of Hope. The other individual award winner, Madison Manning, recently received her Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award a Girl Scout can earn, for a project she did for House of Hope. Madison is an Ambassador level Girl Scout from South Fork High School

who has a passion for creating awareness about the importance of reusing and recycling. She created a multi-faceted initiative entitled “T-Bags for Hope” where she collected t-shirts that she made into reusable grocery bags for House of Hope. These nosew bags reduced the organization’s expense for plastic bags by $100 per month and reduced the amount of plastic bags discarded and dumped into our environment. With help from the team she coordinated, nearly 1,000 T-Bags have been made for House of Hope. Choosing this as her Gold Award project was an easy decision for Madison as she has participated in the annual Girl Scout Food Drive since she was a Daisy Girl Scout. Madison and her Girl Scout peers continue to make the world a better place by positively impacting the community around them. This year’s Girl Scout Food Drive benefitting House of Hope will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. until noon. Girl Scouts will be collecting food from neighborhoods throughout Martin County and delivering it to House of Hope on that day. Food can also be dropped off from 9 a.m. until noon at the House of Hope Food Pantry located at 2484 SE Bonita Street in Stuart. To explore opportunities to volunteer or partner with Girl Scouts, call (866) 727-4475 or visit www. gssef.org.

Kiwanis Club of Stuart president named president of the year

Fix-Up

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

Kiwanis Club of Stuart president named outstanding club president of the year For Your Voice MARTIN COUNTY — Most Martin County residents and others around the State of Florida know Suzy Hutcheson for her 40 years dedicated to the programs and services of Helping People Succeed, a non-profit organization that serves more than 4,500 children and families in Martin, St. Lucie and Okeechobee counties. Others know Hutcheson for her dedicated club work with Kiwanis of Stuart and this year as Club President raising funds for an extension to Kiwanis Park at Woodlawn in downtown Stuart, dedicating other funds for K-Kid Clubs, Builder’s Clubs and Key Clubs for students involved with Kiwanis projects and attending Kiwanis state and international conventions. Now both of those projects, children with special needs and Hutcheson’s work through Helping People Succeed, have come together in building a Barrier Free Playground within the popular park off Colorado Avenue. Kiwanis members and the City of Stuart, owner of the park land, joined forces to raise more than $200,000 to add new playground equipment for children with disabilities. Due to Hutcheson’s dedication to the park project and other Kiwanis programs, the Kiwanis Florida District named her Florida Kiwanis Outstanding Club President of the Year. A Kiwanis Club member for 10 years, Hutcheson has served as President-Elect and in several board positions. “I look forward to spending my

Tuesdays with an incredible group of people working together to make the community a better place for our children,” said Hutcheson regarding the many members in the Kiwanis Club of Stuart that meets monthly at The Quality Inn Community Room on U.S. 1 in Stuart. Built in the late 1980s, Kiwanis Park at Woodlawn was designed as a safe location for children and their families to enjoy an afternoon of play or even plan a party at the location off Colorado Avenue. The site, before it was purchased by the City of Stuart, was the location of the American Red Cross offices. Kiwanis Lt. Governor and Past President Keith Muniz nominated Hutcheson. “President Suzy had an outstanding year with quite a few major accomplishments despite the challenges she faced in her official position at Helping People Succeed,” said Muniz. “She remained focused on her club’s vision and led her Kiwanis Club of Stuart through some hefty goals and objectives.” Besides funding for the park expansion from the City of Stuart and the Kiwanis Club of Stuart, Hutcheson raised $25,000 through several grants and received other funds from the United Way of Martin County Foundation to support the Kiwanis chapter and the Barrier Free Playground. The park, part of Stuart’s Parks and Recreation Department, is open daily from dawn to dusk. The site is also used as a parking area for visitors to downtown Stuart for shopping and community programs. Check out the Kiwanis Club of Stuart website at kiwanisclubofstuart.org.

Ask the Anytime Gal: Expert Answers to your Health & Fitness Questions Question: I’m trying to lose weight. How much cardio is enough? Answer: The simple truth is a little cardio goes a long way. It is well-known to those of us in the industry that excessive cardio (meaning more than 45 minutes in a steady state or 30 minutes of high intensity interval training) is too much for the average person. After this amount of time, your body will start to become catabolic, which means it starts to eat muscle for fuel instead of food recently

eaten and fat stores. All those ladies you see on the cardio equipment day after day, who always look the same, are actually eating up their muscle. Do you realize what this means? They are lowering their metabolism because now they have less lean muscle mass. Basically, if you would give them a body composition test, they would be fatter. So limit the cardio and put in more time strength training. Many women do not realize this, but strength training (yes, ladies, I’m talking about lifting weights)

is the real key to burning calories and losing weight. Question: Foods seem to be so high in salt these days, and I’m aware of the dangers of hypertension, heart disease and stroke. Can you please clarify the amount of sodium I should be consuming daily? Answer: You’re right—salt is everywhere. Processed foods are the main culprit, but the increased reliance on fast foods and restaurant meals is problematic, as well. To add to the confusion, people often have trouble differentiating between sodium and salt. Salt is actually 40 percent sodium, so when discussing recommendations, we need to be clear. The current Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommends less than 2,300 milligrams of sodium per day (about 1 teaspoon of salt). On the other hand, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommends 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day (about 2/3 teaspoon of salt), and they set the tolerable upper intake level at 2,300 milligrams. It’s clear that your intake should fall somewhere between these two ranges, or even less, but it’s actually quite difficult to keep your sodium level as low as 1,500 milligrams per day. In fact, the IOM points out that 95 percent of American men and 75 percent of American women consume sodium in excess of the tolerable upper limit—not good news for those of us looking to avoid chronic disease as we get older. In order to keep your sodium intake in check, you need to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, and make sure you buy foods that are fresh and unprocessed. And don’t forget to avoid adding salt at the dinner table, as well. Question: I’m in my late 60s and

Linda Lawrence have never been in a gym. I really don’t see myself becoming muscular at my age, so what can a gym do for me? Answer: At your age (which is also my age), you want to maintain a healthy weight, avoid losing muscle mass and decrease your chances of developing osteoporosis, but more importantly, you want to be “nimble”. In other words, you want to develop agility, mobility, balance, stability and strength. As we age we want to be nimble, so we don’t trip on the sidewalk and fall. We want to be agile and have core stability, so we can continue to enjoy playing golf and tennis. We want increased aerobic capacity, so we can chase after our grandchildren. All of those things are what the word nimble means to me and what you can achieve with regular exercise. Linda Lawrence is the owner of Anytime Fitness in Palm City. It’s not the usual thrift store. Monica Worrell, manager, said the 3,000-squarefeet location used to be Christmas shop. “It has a unique look to it,” she said. “It’s very quaint. People do walk through the door and see it’s a different kind of store.” The store is at 613 S. Colorado Ave., Stuart. Worrell said its offerings are varied. “We’ve had some exquisite donations come in,” she said. “We have some really high-end products.” But, she said much of the store has great clothing for reasonable prices, kitchenware and other necessities. In addition to raising money for The ARC of Martin County, the store helps lots shoppers save money. “We have everything from people who have everything and love the hunt to people who are shopping for their needs not their wants,” Worrell said. Parents and concerned citizens wanted to give them greater educational and employment opportunities. The ARC has numerous programs for children, youths and adults. It opened the thrift shop earlier this year. Howse said there’s a secret to shopping at The ARC Thrift Store. “The parking is in the back. There’s some in the front, but people don’t realize we have tons in the back.” Make a Difference Day is a Points of Light initiative. This is its 24th year. ST. LUCIE WEST — Local Senior PGA Pro Peter Oakley, winner of the 2004 British Senior Open at Royal Port Rush Golf Club, in Northern Ireland, and Jerry Impellitterre, former PGA New York sectional teacher of the year and former PGA South Florida Senior Open Champion, are used to competing head-to-head on a regular basis. Now, however, they are joining forces with other South Florida PGA Pros for a good cause. Together they’ll headline an event on Nov. 7th at the beautiful Miles Grant Country Club in Stuart. According to Jerry, “This will be the second year for the event. Last year the golf course, the facility and the weather were perfect. We were able to raise a lot of money for two local charities, the Grace Place outreach and Care Net, while giving all participants a good time and a chance to play

with a PGA Pro.” Peter Oakley adds, “We’ve put Jerry in charge of the weather again this year, so it should be fine. But seriously, for a very reasonable fee local golfers get the chance to play a course they may have not played, with a Pro in their foursome. We were able to raise quite a bit of money last year, and this year’s event should be even bigger and better.” The tournament committee is currently accepting registration for: individual golfers $89 and made-up foursomes $340. It still has some availability for local businesses wishing to sponsor a hole. The committee has promised that prize packages for division winners will exceed those of last year. Interested golfers and sponsors can contact committee members Water and Janice Borowski at (772) 781-0087 or wjborow@hotmail.com as well as Tom Fischer at (772)370-1098 or tom-fischer@ att.net

STUART — Entertainer Daryl Magill has only lived on the Treasure Coast for five years, but he has already made a name for himself throughout southeastern Florida. He has a solo act and performs with the Miami-based Chase Band. He has appeared at the Lyric Theatre, Mar-a-Lago and the Naples Yacht Club. On Nov. 1, Daryl Magill returns to the Kane Center at the Council on Aging of Martin County for a concert with The Shakers. The event will benefit the Kane’s Adult Daycare Center. Magill spoke recently about his love for the Kane Center and the upcoming concert. “The show has a little bit of everything,” he said. “There are some oldies from Sinatra, the Platters and the Temptations. I come out as Tina Turner and Stevie Wonder. There’s audience participation. If I do the Temptations, I bring them out from the audience. Magill considers himself an entertainer, rather than a singer or dancer. “I worked in the Borscht Belt in the Catskills,” he said. “I had to make it theatrical. I sit in the chairs and sing in the audience. I can spot the (audience members) singing and give them the micro-

phone.” Magill will appear with The Shakers. That popular local band, founded in 1996, consists of Pete Quigley on guitar, Mike Howard on bass, Glenn Whalen on keyboards, Neil Santell on drums and Gene Olivieri on the saxophone. Everyone in the band does vocals. Magill and Olivieri go way back to their days in upstate New York 30 years ago. “Daryl and I both lived in upstate New York,” Olivieri said. “I moved here in 1987. We know a lot of the same people up in New York. When he moved down here, we got together.” The Shakers play a variety of musical styles, including jazz, rock ‘n roll, country and reggae. “We don’t classify ourselves,” he said. “Whatever songs we like, we do, or (we do) what’s right for the venue.” That approach must work as The Shakers have been fixtures at Crawdaddy’s since 1996. Magill has become a fixture at the Kane Center for a very personal reason. “My mother-in-law went to the Kane Center,” he said. “The people there are wonderful. I try to get there at least once a month to sing and I do a fundraiser every other month.” The Kane Cabaret season is

& UP

From a smoky 1920’s Speakeasy to the Bowery of the 1930’s, from a World War II USO to a 1950’s Manhattan supper club, Swinging on a Star perfectly weaves various settings and scenes with some of the most popular songs of a generation. The journey also showcases music from the “Road Movies” starring Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Songs include: “Road to Morocco,” “Going My Way,” “Moonlight Becomes You,” “Swinging on a Star,” and many more.

MARTIN COUNTY — About 800 people from all over the Treasure Coast crowded Indian RiverSide Park decked out in purple on Oct. 3 for the annual Treasure Coast Walk to End Alzheimer’s. The fundraiser raised more than $82,000, surpassing this year’s goal of $75,000. More than 150,000 people have Alzheimer’s in Southeast Florida. The disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the country. In addition to the walk, there was a special tribute to those who have experienced or are experiencing Alzheimer’s. Dottie Carson, who was recently diagnosed with early on-set Alzheimer’s, was a keynote speaker.

Alzheimer’s disease is a growing epidemic and the nation’s sixth-leading cause of death. As Baby Boomers age, the number of individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease will rapidly escalate, increasing well beyond today’s more than 5 million Americans to as many as 16 million by 2050. To learn more about disease and available resources, call the toll-free Alzheimer’s Association 24/7 Helpline at (800)272-3900. Donations for this year’s walk can still be made through the end of November at www.alz.org/walk. Follow us on Facebook at www. facebook.com/alzfl or on our website at alz.org/seflorida/ to stay updated on our local programs, services and future walks.
