MARTIN COUNTY — An elusive and brazen burglar terrorized a seemingly safe Martin County neighborhood for about six weeks, sneaking into people’s homes as they slept. And all folks needed to do to stop the seemingly cunning criminal was lock their doors. “People were home and asleep,” Sheriff William “Will” Snyder said at a press conference to announce the arrest of 29-year-old Todd Berkley. “I can’t think of anything more frightening than to wake up and realize someone was in your home.” He added, “We had an entire neighborhood paralyzed with fear.” Berkley broke into six homes in the Miles Grant Country Club, Stuart. The crime spree went from September to October. Turned out he was living with his father on southeast Miles Grant Road.

The sheriff said that Berkley was caught because a resident with a home-security system observed him in her home on a smart phone and called police. Additionally, he said another called in a suspicious-person report. Berkley picked no locks, broke no windows, and busted through no doors, the sheriff told Your Voice News & Views after the press conference. He walked right up to sliding glass doors at the back of homes and tested them. “If he found the door locked, he just moved on,” the sheriff said. “Always lock those doors.” Snyder said that residents should lock doors and windows at night wherever they live, but he said that’s especially true for parts of Palm City where neighbors are spaced too far from one another to see each other’s homes. Berkley admitted to detectives that he was stealing money and valuables to get drugs. He has several arrest warrants in Maryland for similar crimes. At press time, he was at the Martin County Jail with no bond.

Young activist fights for social justice roots. The goal is to promote fundamental human rights and corporate social responsibility and better working conditions in the agricultural field.” Maunus, the daughter of Howard and Debbie Maunus of Palm City, said that Martin County and this area is critical to the fight. “In Martin County, so much of the economy is agricultural,” she said. “Going to South Fork, we live in it. There’s a great presence of agricultural workers’ children at South Fork. Ninety percent of the nation’s tomatoes are exported from the Immokalee area and the group was founded there. The tomato industry used to be the worse to work in. It had the most human rights violations and was an unsafe place to work. There were a lot of cases of modern-day slavery, human trafficking and sexual abuse. It was a horrible

Founded in 1993 with a small group of workers, by 1998, the organization had won raises that brought their wages for picking tomatoes back to pre-1980 levels. The Coalition of Immokalee Workers also worked on the issue of involuntary servitude and over the past 15 years, investigations and federal prosecutions have freed more than 1,200 farmworkers from captivity and forced labor. Maunus said that the Coalition of Immokalee Workers and the Fair Food program seeks to hold corporations responsible for the conditions of the workers who pick the goods they sell. “Large corporate groups have control over the supply chain,” Maunus said. “It holds them responsible to ensure that the farmers pay a minimum wage. It established a hotline that workers can call in to report cases of sexual abuse. “Right now, the main objective is ‘Boot the Braid.” Corporations like McDonald’s, Burger King, and Walmart have signed on to Fair Foods. They learned about advocacy and ways to engage other young people in the campaign for fair food. “A lot of CIW is community organizing,” Maunus said. “Action is the big key. Deputy seeks help in arresting cancer Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
TREASURE COAST — Deputy Chrystal Duncombe is driving the fight against cancer. No, really. The St. Lucie West resident is driving the Martin County’s Sheriff’s cancer fight car. That gets a job perk that took a little getting used to for a road-patrol officer. “I have people drive by and give me the thumbs-up,” she said. The deputy has been with the Sheriff’s Office for four years. About two years ago, supervisors approached her to drive the black cruiser with pink lettering proclaiming, “Help us fight cancer.” Her mother died at 46 due to smoking-related cancer, so Duncombe didn’t need any convincing. The lawwoman takes the car to a host of anti-cancer events, such as the recent Survivor Party at the Evergreen Club in Palm City, Oct. 2. At press time, Duncombe is slated to appear at the Treasure Coast Pink Heals Tour, Tradition Square, Saturday, Oct.

11. But, Duncombe is still a cop with lights, siren, badge and sidearm, and her vehicle is still a Sheriff’s Office cruiser. She’s taken many a lawbreaker to jail in it. “I had a guy who was like, ‘I’m not getting in that car,’” she said. “‘Not that car.’ But, by the time we got to (the Martin County Jail) he was OK with it.” Sheriff William “Will” Snyder said Duncombe and her cruiser are in demand. “We get requests from all over for (Duncombe) to bring the car,” he said. “She’s become the celebrity.” Snyder, too, said cancer has visited his family, and he wants to be a part of arresting cancer, and putting it away forever. “I personally have a heart for
that,” he said. There’s another benefit to driving the cancer-fight patrol car,” Duncombe said. She said when she’s at events and parked while working, folks like to tell her their survivor stories. She said the stories about people battling cancers helps her keep a cop’s stressful job in perspective. “It makes you appreciative for your life,” the deputy said. Snyder said, he too, has gotten to hear survivor stories when attending events with the car. “When you hear their stories, our jobs are much less stressful,” he said. “This is for every fight against every form of cancer.” The car will be at the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer in Martin County annual walk on Saturday, Oct. 18, at Memorial Park, 100 S.E. PALM CITY — Michael Izzolo, owner of Michael Leonard’s Salon, is a pretty modest fella. are all about following the science and trend along the Indian River Lagoon. “What occurred in the last year and a half, two years, when the sea grass died, there was a grassroots effort beginning in Brevard and sweeping south to do something with fertilizer,” she said. “(Other counties) said, ‘Martin County back in 2011 had a strong ordinance, but now you’re behind.’ We were being urged by people from other counties to revise our ordinance.” The new ordinance bans fertilizers with phosphorous, with some exceptions, requires use of those with slow-release nitrogen, and bans use of any with phosphorous and nitrogen from June to the end of September, South Florida’s rainy season. Additionally, it prohibits use of fertilizer within 25 feet of a waterway, and requires notices at fertilizer retailers. Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, said when the commission was considering tightening fertilizer restrictions, since the summer no one opposed it to him. He said there’s a lot of awareness about the problems with nitrogen and phosphorous in area waters. “It’s all ending up sometime where we don’t want it,” he said. “(St. Lucie River) North Fork, South Fork and the Indian River Lagoon.” For decades there have been numerous problems with nutrients and pollutants throughout the 150-mile Indian River Lagoon, which is formed by Mosquito Lagoon, along with the Banana and Indian rivers. Sea grass levels are considered a thermometer of the lagoon system’s health. When the water is sick, the water vegetation dies. A lot of sea life dies with the grass. In 2011, a phytoplankton bloom, fueled by nitrogen and phosphorous, killed off about 30,000 acres of sea grass. Last year large releases of nutrient-rich water from Lake Okeechobee fouled not just the Indian River, but the St. Lucie as well, causing the Martin County Health Department to posts warnings about hazardous bacteria along the river. Reducing the amount of harmful nutrients flowing into area waterways is a major undertaking in Martin. For example, Bessey Creek is getting 30 years of phosphorous scrubbing with an unusual mix of natural and chemical technology, Hybrid Wetland Chemical Treatment. Last year the commission approved a 30-year lease of a 46-

acre stormwater treatment area adjacent to Citrus Boulevard to the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The agriculture department is putting about $2 million into renovations to adapt it to the hybrid-treatment technology. The county is also using floating, cell-foam planters at the Old Palm City West STA, that’s the storm-water treatment area nestled between Cornell and Butler avenues by 35th Street. The idea is to get plants such as pickerelweed, golden canna and water hyssop absorbing nutrients before ground water reaches area rivers. “It’s more expensive to clean (nitrogen and phosphorous) than to prevent it going to the bodies of water in the first place,” Hughes said. She said much of what’s happening along the Indian River Lagoon matches efforts made to clean Tampa Bay a few years back, the Tampa Bay Estuary Program. Ed Sherwood, senior scientist at the program, said it’s premature to declare stiffened fertilizer ordinances in Pinellas, Manatee and Hillsborough counties, along with the city of Tampa, a major success story. “We have some trends, but they’re not definitive,” he said. Sherwood said the Tampa Bay
program has a scientific analysis under way that’ll give more definitive evidence about whether the ordinances have helped as much as people hope. He said there is evidence that it’s not enough for local governments enact fertilizer ordinances. Sherwood said education is key to getting people to follow one. Additionally, he said there’s some evidence that strict enforcement can help generate compliance. “There are no hard numbers at this point,” Sherwood said. Haddox said commissioners are looking at the public-awareness aspect. Additionally, the county’s 2011 fertilizer ordinance has enforcement provisions, but the county has never acted on them. Hughes said the supply of fertilizers that’ll meet the county’s new ordinance are increasing. “(Tougher ordinances are) not just happening in Florida,” she said. “It’s happening nationwide. (The Scott’s Company) is putting in big money for research in this area. They want to be responsible as much as we want to be responsible. Everyone wants to do the right thing.” Hughes said that county residents with supplies of non-compliant fertilizer can dispose of them after the ordinance takes effect under the Solid Waste Division’s household hazardous waste program.

Ultimately, she hopes to study international law. “I always liked global news, issues and politics” she said. (I’m interested in) global human rights. Coast region, which includes Indian River and Okeechobee counties along with Martin and St. Lucie, had a not-seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 8.3 percent in August. Martin has the lowest unemployment rate among them. Indian River and St. Lucie are tied at the unenviable top. The St. Lucie MSA has gained jobs in every measured sector over the last year except one, according to state reporting: manufacturing. While the Department of Economic Opportunity reports that Florida has added about 6,700 manufacturing jobs over the last year, it shows St. Lucie and Martin counties, shedding about 200. The reporting leaves some area economic-development experts scratching their heads. “We’ve talked to several manufacturers, and they’re more in the expansion mode,” Peter Tesch, president of the Economic Development Council of St Lucie County, said. He added, “My thought is (it’s) inconsistent data, incomplete reporting and short-term adjustment issues. That number is a little suspect.” Tim Dougher, executive Director of the Business Development Board of Martin County, echoed Tesch. “The majority of our larger manufacturers are expanding, so I’d have to look at that report,” he said. He agreed with Tesch that the number can be a phantom generated by reporting methods that don’t accurately reflect what’s happening on the ground. Joe Catrambone, president/CEO of the Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce, said he, too, was skeptical that St. Lucie and Martin have lost manufacturing jobs. “I don’t get it, because every other segment is increasing,” he said. However, he said it’s possible that local manufacturers have had troubles filling new and existing positions, and the seeming

manufacturing job shed could be a matter of lopsided attrition. In other words, the jobs are there, but the workers aren’t after the Great Recession and slow economic recovery. “We don’t have a trained workforce like many other areas around the state,” Catrambone said. “They had to move away. That trained workforce had to move away. They all left the area; there was no work.” He said member companies at the chamber have been looking for and not finding enough middle-skilled workers for months, if not years, now. Former Martin County Commissioner Ed Ciampi works for a Palm City manufacturer. He said that the Martin County School District and Indian River State College have done a good job at educating a middle-skill workforce that could fill manufacturing positions, but the area experiences a seemingly higher-than-average brain drain. “Our best export in Martin County is talented, highly educated young people,” he said. Manufacturing jobs are considered extremely important to local economic development and activity. In addition to workers typically getting paid comparatively well, manufacturers create value-adding jobs. That is, they add dollars from other places to a local economy. The unemployment rate is calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are telephone interviews with workers. Those who report not having jobs and looking for employment in the previous 30 days are counted as unemployed, whether or not they have, have applied for, or are receiving unemployment-compensation. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs.

The uncertainty of the last few years, undoubtedly has caused most of us who love fine Antique jewelry to question the decisions we have made in the past and forced us to re-examine our plans for the future. As we walk through our beautiful store assessing our inventory it’s not a problem to say unequivocally that my mentors were correct. Buy and own rare Antique or one of a kind pieces. It has given us more pleasure than money sitting idly in a low-return bank account. It makes us happy to get up each day and see our beautiful, rare Antique treasures instead of worrying how the Asian or European markets are doing currently, most of us are forced out of the conventional safe havens of banking or solid income producing assets. Many feel forced to still play the market. My mentors remembered the crash of the 1930’s. I too, do not want my happiness to rely on the old investments. I want to see and hold my assets. You can ask a few economists to look at the same data and they will come to a radically different opinions about the future of our economy. Fred & I are very optimistic & feel this great country will have a wonderful future. Always remember rare, beautiful jewels have stood the test of time. I am not an expert on economics but I am an expert of Fine Antique & custom Jewelry. That’s why I have devoted our talent, passion & energy to our business. If you are considering selling Great Grandmother’s wonderful Antique Jewels, we are always interested in buying. If you are contemplating acquiring a rare piece.... Please come see us. Question: What do you think about breakfast cereals? Are they a healthy breakfast option? Answer: Today, breakfast cereal is promoted as having “as much protein as an egg” and being “made with whole grains.” There are even “challenges” suggesting you replace each breakfast and lunch with a 260-calorie serving of cereal and low-fat milk. When did cereal become “part of a healthy breakfast?” Any product can carry the “made with whole grains” label as long as the grain ingredients are no more than 49 percent refined. Most breakfast cereal is a recipe for all-day hunger! The last time I checked, an egg also has “as much protein as an egg” without any refined ingredients or added sugar. There are so many better choices for breakfast. I’d recommend leaving the cereal on the shelf. Instead, think a combination of complete proteins, healthy fats, and healthful fiber sources — all of which help stabilize blood sugar levels and stave off hunger. So, trade in that cereal for something like scrambled eggs with avocado and veggies. You’ll notice the difference in both your energy levels and lack of cravings. Question: I’ve never been the best sleeper. Is this having a negative impact on my overall health? Answer: Unfortunately, yes, it probably is! There is a lot of emerging research revolving around sleep (or the lack thereof) and its associated health implications. There’s some data now indicating that those who get just one night of poor sleep end up with abnormal lab values indicative of pre-diabetes. That’s right, pre-diabetes!! Folks with
Linda Lawrence poor sleep cycles can end up with suppressed insulin secretion after a meal, which leaves them with elevated blood sugar levels for far too long. They also have lowered resting metabolic rates, which could ultimately contribute to weight gain, as well. Other researchers have discovered that hundreds of genes get disrupted after just one week of suboptimal sleep, thereby impairing the body’s ability to heal itself. Chronic sleep problems have been associated with heart attacks, stroke, diabetes, and obesity for years, but now we’re starting to see direct observations in laboratory settings. In the end, optimal sleep is just as important as your fitness level and your nutritional status when it comes to overall health, so try to get at least eight hours a night, and more when you can. Question: Is it good to exercise on an empty stomach? Answer: Exercising on an empty stomach can lead to the break-

ful with seniors like me. He’s wonderful with everybody.” Izzolo and wife Kimberly opened Michael Leonard’s 22 years ago. The couple had married not long before following family to the Treasure Coast. “I fell in love with it and thought it would be a great area for us to start our life and start a salon,” Michael said. The couple brought a New Jersey sensibility with them, and blended it with Florida hospitality. “We treat everyone who’s with us like family,” Michael said. “Probably 50 percent or more of my clientele have my cell-phone number.” When you enter Michael Leonard’s its earthy
tones speak of a homier atmosphere, but the layout suggests state-of-the-art. “Our existing clients, the message from them is it’s warm and comfortable in a professional environment,” Kimberly said. Michael has been doing hair for three decades, and has flown to Europe to work his art. “I became a platform artist for Sebastian Professional,” he said. “That helped (Michael Leonard’s) in attracting other stylists.” He said good stylists know that great looking hair is a team effort. He offered a tip folks can use no matter who does their hair. “Maintenance is a really big one,” Michael said. “Using the right products. You can get a really good style, but if you’re not using the correct products, it can fade and not look good.”

Of course, the timing and choice of food will vary from activity to activity, the time of day you’re exercising, and your personal preference. But, to be succinct, you need to eat before you exercise! The best rule of thumb: the closer you get to exercise time, the simpler your choices need to be so the body can utilize the energy more efficiently. If you can eat two-three hours prior to exercise, a full meal will have time to be absorbed and processed. But, if you need to eat closer to your workout (within an hour), you’ll need to choose a simpler snack. In short, if it’s been more than three hours since your last big meal, you’ll

Poppies bloom in Palm City STAFF WRITER
pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com
PALM CITY — Poppies will bloom in Palm City for the first time in memory. That is, local volunteers will be offering the American Legion poppies for donations in October and November for the first time. “It’s exposure for us in Palm City that we actually exist,” Frank Maitland, commander of the American Legion Post 399, Palm City, said. “No, 2, the Legion has done it for many, many years.” Well, actually, the American Legion Auxiliary and American Legion have done it for many years. “For the poppy distribution, that’s an Auxiliary program and funds are to be used exclusively for veterans,” Jo Ann Maitland, president of the post’s American Legion Auxiliary, said. The Maitlands are married. Volunteers from the post and auxiliary, along with some from the Sons of the American Legion, will be at the upcoming Palm City Chamber of Commerce’s Fall Fest & Car Show, Saturday, Oct. 25, at Lance Cpl. Justin Wilson Park, 2050 S.W. Mapp Road, Palm City. That’ll be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then, on Friday, Nov. 7, to Sunday, Nov. 9, the legionnaires and their supporters, will be at both Publix locations in Palm City, 1395 S.W. Martin Highway and 2750 S.W. Martin Downs Blvd.
Frank said it’s sometimes frustrating to offer the poppies for donations. “We don’t sell them,” he said. “It’s for a donation.” Folks will very often hand him, or other volunteers, $1, and they get the distinctive red cloth poppies they can wear. Frank said he’s OK with that. He wants folks to donate only what they reasonably can to the venerable organization, and he knows $1 is all some can really do. But, more often “people say, ‘Catch you on the way out,’ so you stand by the exit,” Frank said. But, he said there are big rewards for the drudgery. “We’ve had people drop $20s and $50s,” Frank said. Even better, however, Frank said, is veterans who’ll never go to posts to find out more about the Legion will stop to talk to members. After that, they sometimes make their ways to the posts. “They’re also an outreach tool, yes, they are,” Frank said. “A lot of guys will sit down with us and tell us their war stories. It’s nice to hear the stories, especially the World War II guys, the Korea guys.” While many attribute the poppies to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, who also offers them for donations, both groups have longstanding historic claims to them. However, the Legion appears to have adopted the poppy first.

POPPIESfrom page 18 It all started with a Canadian, one Lt. Col, John McCrae, who forever connected the poppy to war dead in his famous World War I poem, “In Flanders Fields.” “In Flanders fields the red poppies blow/Between the crosses, row on row…” The poem inspired Moina Michael to write “We Shall Keep the Faith,” in 1918. In it she promised to wear the poppy to honor those who died in war. “And now the Torch and Poppy Red/We wear in honor of our dead.” She reportedly went to the 1918 YWCA Overseas War Secretaries Conference wearing a silk poppy with 25 more to give out. In 1920, the American Legion — founded in 1919 by Theodore Roosevelt Jr. — adopted the poppy as its symbol of remembrance in 1920. Jo Ann said the poppy program is the largest fundraiser for the Auxiliary. Post 399 meets at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4194, 4194 S.E. Palm City woman selected for juried arts show STAFF WRITER
skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com
STUART — There are still a few weeks left to view the 24th Annual All-Florida Juried Arts Show at the Court House Cultural Center in Stuart. The show runs through Nov. 7 and is sponsored by the Arts Council of Martin County, a nonprofit umbrella organization for the arts in the county. It provides services to all visual and performing artists, arts organizations, students and the public. The show, whose works were chosen by judges, features artists from all over Florida. The works cover a wide variety of media, including acrylics, cold wax, collage, colored pencil, graphite, ink, mixed media, oil, pastels, photography, screen print, silverpoint, sculpture and even infrared capture photography on metal paper. The last won Best in Show for Robert Vail. Photographer Roberta London was the only resident of Palm City whose work was selected for the show. This was the third time her work has appeared. “The quality of work from Florida artists is amazing,” she said.

“It’s great company to be in.” London, a native New Yorker, worked as the marketing director for a large medical group. She moved frequently between Florida and New York. Seven years ago, she and her husband moved here. “I had family in Palm City,” she said. “I love this area and I’m happy to have moved down here. Every time I go back to New York City, it’s chaotic. I’ve come to love the large public parking spaces here.” London has a background in television and video production, an asset when she moved into photography. “I was using techniques to tell stories and highlight certain things,” she said “I had the skills of telling a visual story, of looking and interpreting. I’m visually oriented. When we came down here, I was stunned. I’ve always loved the native world, and I saw things I’d never seen before in the light and the color. When you wake up in the morning, something has grown 2 inches. I was taken by the stunning landscape.” London began going on the local Secret Garden tours and that began her love affair with photography. “I was hooked,” she said. “When

photographers I admire.” London has done a series of shots of the Mindanao gum tree. “I saw them on a visit to McKee Botanical Gardens,” she said. “It was a tree I had passed many times, but it was the season to have all its colors. When the bark peels off, the colors are unbelievable. To me, they look like beautiful abstract art.” The work that was selected for the Cultural Center show is entitled “Art Nouveau.” It depicts the leaves of a lily with the bud inside. “I found the shape of it very beautiful,” she said “It was like the shapes from the Art Nouveau period. I found it right in the middle of a street in Stuart. A lot of things I photograph are right here in our neighborhood.” What I love about small towns is that the businesses and people support each other in the community. What amazes me is that the Cultural Center is in the heart of downtown and could be a surprise to a lot of people. The gallery is beautiful and beautifully lit. They put on fine shows.” “There’s such a wonderfully diverse group of artists in this area and in every medium. It’s revitalizing when you have a supportive community who understands what it means to be an artist.” The 24th Annual All-Florida Juried Art Show will be on display at the Court House Cultural Center, 80 East Ocean Blvd. Stuart, through Nov. 7.
