The Tigers came from behind to win 21-25, 25-22, 25-18 and 25-20.

MARTIN COUNTY — As the Stuart Air Show is getting ready to line up on the tarmac, the Martin County Airport-Witham Field, is flying high. The Florida Department of Transportation recently released a study showing the airport’s visible financial contributions to the area. “In 2010, the total payroll at the airport was ($35.7 million),” George Stokus, airport manager, said. “Total payroll in 2014, ready for this, ($66 million.).” That’s an 84 percent increase in local payroll in four years. That’s just employment at the airport, and doesn’t include

Our ticket sales are already ahead of last year, with the military coming back.” The show will launch on Oct. 31, 5 to 10 p.m., with a special Halloween edition. Haddox is a member of the Business Development Board of Martin County’s board of directors. “I hope it’s true,” he said. “Anything that brings jobs is good.” Those jobs are on the way at a good time. The Treasure Coast is has about 14,000 folks looking for work, according to the last jobs report from the Department of Economic Opportunity. That puts the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area, MSA, — St. Lucie and Martin counties — at a 7.3 percent not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for September.

trends, fared better with employment than its neighbor to the north. About 62,000 of its 66,000 workers had jobs, for a not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 6.3 percent. St. Lucie remains in top 10 of unemployment, sharing space with Putnam County at No. 4. It has about 129,000 workers. Slightly more than 10,000 are seeking employment. That’s a not seasonally adjusted unemployment rate of 7.9 percent. Victorio said for the past few years local employment has slogged upward, with the rest of the state, and entered the range counted by many as full employment last spring. She said that even during the local summer jobs lull, employment has continued to inch further into full-employment territory. Full employment is when there is almost no deficient-demand unemployment. In other words, if employable folks want jobs reasonably suited to their educations and backgrounds, they can usually find them in short order, because the economy is producing adequate demand. Increasingly now, she said, the burden is on local employers to find talent, not on qualified workers to find employers. “We’re holding a manufacturing job fair on Nov. 13, because they’re having trouble finding people,” she said. That job fair will be 10 a.m. to

The state’s economic department released September’s job numbers on Friday, Oct. 17. Florida’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 6.1 percent in September, which was down .2 percentage point from August. That’s the lowest statewide unemployment has been since June 2008. The national seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for September was 5.9 percent. “The (unemployment) story is that there is no story, which is a good thing,” Odaly Victorio, communications coordinator for CareerSource Research Coast, said. Not all the employment news is non-news. While the Treasure Coast is gaining in the jobs marathon, it’s still far back in the pack. It has the third-highest unemployment rate among the state’s 23 MSAs and metropolitan areas. Palm Beach had the highest, 8.4 percent not seasonally adjusted, and Sebastian-Vero Beach took the unwanted silver at 7.8 percent. An increased population of workers likely accounts for some of the seeming unemployment stubbornness. The two counties forming the Port St. Lucie MSA added 300 workers from August to September, and 1,800 over the year. Martin, keeping to traditional

2 p.m. at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center, 2195 Airoso Blvd. “We have a few committed companies already, but we have some space (for more),” she said. Victorio said that CareerSource recently did a job fair at the Indian River County Fairgrounds, Vero Beach. “We set up for 67 employers, but we had a couple no shows and a couple just show up with their stuff, which we don’t like,” she said. More importantly for job seekers — “We didn’t fill every position open at the job fair,” Victorio said. And “we have a marine industry (job fair) in December.” That’s Dec. 11, also at the Community Center, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The job fairs are open to any job seeker who’s registered, or will register, with CareerSource. The unemployment rate is calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are telephone interviews with workers. Those that report not having jobs and looking for employment in the previous 30 days are counted as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many call this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs.

the economic activities such as nearby restaurants hiring more staff to keep up with increased demand of more workers at the airport businesses. It also doesn’t measure the economic and employment benefits of events, such as the upcoming air show. “All the rest of the numbers you can argue,” Stokus said. “We can talk about economic ripple. These are hard numbers.” Palm City’s Alexander Beringer is the executive vice president and director of operations for Fair Wind Air Charter, one of four most important businesses at the airport identified in the study. He said the numbers reflect the reality he’s seeing when he goes to work. “I need more technicians,” he said. “I need more pilots. I need more office staff.” The on-demand air charter service has nine planes located in Stuart. It’s expanding to 14, and Beringer is scrambling for office space. “We’re at the point where the building I’m in, I cram more than one person into each cubicle space,” he said. According to the state study, there are now 2,310 jobs at the airport among its 22 businesses. “In 2010, the total was 1,240 jobs,” Stokus said. That’s an 86 percent increase. Stokus — who said, “I’m not an economist” — believes the slight difference in number of new jobs and increased payroll likely reflects a small surge in the number of entry- to mid-skill jobs that are important to growing broad prosperity. “It was definitely (an increase in) all bands of the employment spectrum,” he said. The airport’s major businesses are Triumph Aircraft Industries, an aircraft parts manufacturing company; Fair Wind; and two fixed-base operators, Atlantic

Aviation and Stuart Jet Center. Fixed base operators provide airplane services, such as fuel. According to the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity, Martin County’s not seasonally adjusted, non-agricultural, unemployment rate in September was 6.3 percent. The same month in 2010, it was 12.5. That month four years ago, the county had about 62,800 people in the labor force, and almost 7,900 were looking for work. This year, 62,000 of the county’s 66,000 workers have employment. That’s an increase of about 7,100 filled jobs over the four years, or about 13 percent more. The airport businesses seem to be dramatically outstripping the county in an employment surge. Stokus said that’s especially important because airports are a bellwether. He said when times get tough, private and commercial air travel are among the first luxuries to get clipped from business and personal budgets, and among the last to get restored. “We’re the leading and lagging economic indicator,” he said. “We’re the first to get dropped and the last to catch up.” Beringer said that the upcoming customs facility will likely pump up the airport’s broader economic benefits. Many of the company’s flights are international. “When I bring people in, I have to stop in Palm Beach,” he said. “The majority of the time, they get off in Palm Beach. There’s no reason to get off in Stuart. They spend their money there.” The customs facility will allow Fair Wind and others to fly straight into the Martin County Airport. Stokus said that’ll greatly increase fuel sales at the airport, too. The Stuart Air Show will be on Friday, Oct. 31, to Sunday, Nov. 2. Today I could move to Oklahoma and eventually run for a seat on the Choctaw Nation’s Tribal Council. All right, probably not all that, but because of sending an email, I learned about my full Choctaw grandmother, Elizabeth Sims. What I’ve found out since then is her blood makes me Choctaw enough to serve on the Tribal Council, assuming other favorable factors. That just blows my Green and Orange heart away. er. Many other shows canceled. Remember the federal budget sequestration that started last year? It grounded the Air Force Thunderbirds, Navy Blue Angels and other military jet displays at airshows for the entire season. The Stuart show did have the Air Force Command Center Alpha last year, and a Thunderbird jet on static display, but that was it. The mobile center is a multi-media promotion and recruitment tool that goes wherever receptive crowds will be the largest. But the military is back in a big way, despite new hostilities against the group in Syria and Iraq calling itself the Islamic State. “We lost a display aircraft, because of the bombing of (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria),” Roberts said. This fall, Stuart wraps up the air-show circuit on Florida’s eastern coastline. The Melbourne Air & Space Show and Wings and Waves Air Show, Daytona Beach, did their things earlier this month. The only other airshow in the Sunshine State in November is the NAS Pensacola Open House – Blue Angels Homecoming Air Show. “It’s probably the biggest event in Martin County,” Roberts said. “On the Treasure Coast, it’s the biggest (airshow) in the area.” Glynn said the show raises funds for several area charities, including the Road to Victory Military Museum, Stuart, and Martin County Community foundation. Other supported charities include The ARC of Martin County and more. General admission tickets for

Scout builds little library STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — For his Eagle Scout project, Taylor Rising has chosen a local endeavor that is part of a worldwide movement. He is building a Little Free Library for the park at Lighthouse Point in Seagate Harbor. The website for the Little Free Library movement notes that it started in Wisconsin in 2009, when Todd Bol built a model of a one-room schoolhouse as tribute to his mother, a teacher who loved reading. He filled it with books and put up a sign that said “Free Books.” Bol joined with Rick Brooks of the University of Wisconsin to create a movement that would pay homage to Andrew Carnegie’s creation of 2,510 free public libraries more than a century ago; the traveling libraries of Lutie Stearns, who brought books to Wisconsin between 1895-1914; the ‘take a book, leave a book’ spots in coffee shops; and even to the grassroots empowerment movements in countries around the world. The goals was to create

2,501 Little Free Libraries and keep going as they promoted literacy around the world. By January 2014, the number of registered Little Free Libraries around the world was nearly 15,000. For Taylor, 16, a junior at Martin County High School, the impetus for his project was a request from community members. “They knew I was a Scout,” he said. “They asked me if I wanted to do it and I did.” Taylor is the son of Donna and Thomas Rising of Palm City. He has been a Scout since the third grade. “My grandfather was a Boy Scout and Eagle Scout,” he said. So was my father. I wanted to keep the family tradition.” To become an Eagle Scout, Taylor, a member of Troop 823, under the direction of Scoutmaster Bob Harding, had to earn a variety of merit badges. He had to prove proficiency in first aid and swimming, in camping and cooking in the wild. He also had to work on positive family relations and keep a family log. The Lit-

“Visualize this happening to your jeans”

hungry people got off ships and started my Irish-American roots. I read about Choctaw fighters who shed their blood with the colonials to back their bid for independence from Britain during the Revolutionary War. I read about Choctaw warriors serving directly with George Washington fighting with distinction. The relationship between the Choctaw and new United States was, nonetheless, pretty rocky — that Trail of Tears thing. Yet, despite its own troubles with losing ancestral lands to soldiers and settlers they’d fought and died alongside, members of the Choctaw Nation sent considerable aid to Ireland during the Great Irish Famine. I was in tears of pride about my newfound heritage. When the Great War came along, Choctaw in the 142nd Infantry started using their language on the radio, which prevented the Germans from decoding messages and turned the tide on the Meuse-Argonne front. Thus the military’s storied code talkers were born. And I could claim these men as my cultural heritage. More pride

swelled in my increasingly Choctaw heart. Finding long-lost family members has become pretty commonplace these days. First there was the divorce-prone Baby Boomers moving their fragmented families all over God’s creation from the ‘60s to the ‘80s, followed by the Internet, email and Facebook. Those marvels of the modern age give us the ability to find and communicate with people all over the world in a matter of minutes sometimes. My message is this — the fall and winter holidays are upon us. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year, and the many celebrations among smaller numbers of Americans. Don’t let another day pass. Take a minute to look up a lost relative, friend, old flame, or whoever it is you miss. Heck, it might be someone who’s on your speed dial that you’ve just been avoiding for years. Send an email. Make a phone call. The results could be life changing. I can think of no better way to spend the holidays.

Treasure Coast Hospice welcomes new chief financial officer and new director of Major Gifts and Gift Planning FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — Treasure Coast Hospice is pleased to welcome two new employees to its senior staff Carol Ruggles, chief financial officer, and Darla Worley-Livesay, director of Major Gifts and Gift Planning. Ruggles has 25 years of experience in hospice. Since earning her MBA at the University of Kentucky, she has worked in finance at Hospice of Central Kentucky from 1989-1995 and at Hospice of the Bluegrass until this year. “I have a business degree,” said Ruggles said. “I am a finance person. To be able to use my skill set to support a program that is doing so much good is a great opportunity.” Ruggles said she is inspired by the energy at Treasure Coast Hospice and the people she has met while here. “It was very clear that the energy in this program is on fire and that this program is set to do some really great new things,” Ruggle said. “I wanted to be a

Darla Worley-Livesay part of that change.” Worley-Livesay has 25 years of experience fundraising for non-profit organizations. She has worked with the American Cancer Society, the American Lung Association and NOVA Southeastern University. She has a degree in business administration with a minor in finance and human relations. Worley-Livesay was drawn to hospice because of the care and support her own loved one received. “Once hospice came in, everything changed,” she said. She said she is very passionate about the mission of hospice and making sure Treasure Coast Hospice has the funds needed to continue serving the community, and educating donors on what

their generosity supports. “At the end of life, we are there helping a person and their family get through what is possibly the most trying time in their lives. I remember one of the nurses saying ‘We enjoy and celebrate birth. Why can’t the end of life be enjoyed and celebrated as well?’” Treasure Coast Hospice is a nonprofit community organization of caring professionals and dedicated volunteers whose mission is to provide compassionate, comprehensive, high quality care for our patients and those who share their lives in St. Lucie, Martin and Okeechobee counties. Services are available to anyone regardless of their ability to pay, including respite care, counseling and bereavement services.

tle Free Library is the final step in his Eagle Scout program. “I’m constructing it and we’ll put it in the ground in early November,” he said “It will hold 30-40 books. If you’re at the park, you’ll see the tiny library and say, “Cool, what is this thing?’ There will be a sign inside that says, ‘Leave One and Take One.’ People with children can sit on the park bench and read. It promotes literacy.” Taylor said the library is constructed to withstand the elements and has a roof donated by Onshore Roofing Specialist Inc. of Stuart. “My troop and a few volunteers will put it in the ground,” he said. We’ll do landscaping and put paver stones around it.” In addition to his Scouting activities, Taylor plays the tenor saxophone in the Martin County High School Band and has two different certificates in scuba diving. He is also a lifeguard and volunteers at the Stuart Air Show. Ultimately, he wants to become a marine biologist. “I love the water and I love to go diving and fishing,” he said. “I usually go every weekend. Our house is on the water.” Taylor hopes to work in research, seeking cures from the sea for cancer and other illnesses. He also hopes to come back to the Treasure Coast and fight water pollution in the Indian River Lagoon. Taylor said his parents are big supporters and are proud if his accomplishments. “My mom and dad are absolutely thrilled,” he said. “They think it’s great and a huge achievement.” For more information about the Little Free Library movement, visit the website, www.littlefreelibrary. org.

House of Hope’s Stuart thrift store moving FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

House of Hope is moving its Stuart thrift store to Federal Highway as part of an effort to expand its services to Martin County residents in need. The new thrift store will be at 2529 S.E. Federal Highway, Stuart. (It’s in a storefront with Porter Paints, across the street from Jetson.) House of Hope will gradually move its existing Stuart thrift

store from 2484 S.E. Bonita Street — on Dixie Highway in Stuart — to the new location. The Federal Highway location was scheduled to open on Thursday, Oct. 16, with House of Hope’s annual Holiday Thrift Store, featuring new and gently used items for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah and more. By Monday, Nov. 3, the full House of Hope thrift store will be moved in and open for business, with furniture, clothing, home

décor, books and more. The reason for the move is twofold, both of which are driven by the need to help people who are struggling with hunger and hardship: House of Hope wants to enhance the capacity of its main Stuart service center at 2484 S.E. Bonita Street. The agency’s food pantry and case management services — provided by staff, interns and volunteers — will fill the space the thrift store has occupied for the past two decades.

The food warehouse also will be expanded, with increased storage and more refrigeration for fresh produce and frozen meat. The new thrift store on Federal Highway will bring in more revenue, further enhancing House of Hope’s ability to be Martin County’s leader in providing basic needs services. Currently, thrift store sales produce about onethird of the money that House of

Water and Land Conservation - Dedicates funds to acquire and restore Florida conservation and recreation lands Funds the Land Acquisition Trust Fund to acquire, restore, improve, and manage conservation lands including wetlands and forests; fish and wildlife habitat; lands protecting water resources and drinking water sources, including the Everglades, and the water quality of rivers, lakes, and streams; beaches and shores; outdoor recreational lands; working farms and ranches; and historic or geologic sites, by dedicating 33 percent of net revenues from the existing excise tax on documents for 20 years. This amendment does not increase or decrease state revenues. The state revenue restricted to the purposes specified in the amendment is estimated to be $648 million in Fiscal Year 2015-16 and grows to $1.268 billion by the twentieth year. Whether this results in any additional state expenditures depends upon future legislative actions and cannot be determined. Similarly, the impact on local government revenues, if any, cannot be determined. No additional local government costs are expected. 7 YES 7 NO

No.2 CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT ARTICLE X, SECTION 29 Use of Marijuana for Certain Medical Conditions Allows the medical use of marijuana for individuals with debilitating diseases as determined by a licensed Florida physician. Allows caregivers to assist patients’ medical use of marijuana. The Department of Health shall register and regulate centers that produce and distribute marijuana for medical purposes and shall issue identification cards to patients and caregivers. Applies only to Florida law. Does not authorize violations of federal law or any non-medical use, possession or production of marijuana. Increased costs from this amendment to state and local governments cannot be determined. There will be additional regulatory and enforcement activities associated with the production and sale of medical marijuana. Fees will offset at least a portion of the regulatory costs. While sales tax may apply to purchases, changes in revenue cannot reasonably be determined since the extent to which medical marijuana will be exempt from taxation is unclear without legislative or state administrative action. 7 YES 7 NO No.3 CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT ARTICLE V, SECTIONS 10, 11 Prospective Appointment of Certain Judicial Vacancies Proposing an amendment to the State Constitution requiring the Governor to prospectively fill vacancies in a judicial office to which election for retention applies resulting from the justice’s or judge’s reaching the mandatory retirement age or failure to qualify for a retention election; and allowing prospective appointments if a justice or judge is not retained at an election. MARTIN COUNTY — Scott Turnbull, a partner at Crary Buchanan Law, has joined the Florida Oceanographic Society board of directors, said Mark Perry, executive director of the nonprofit organization and Florida Coastal Center on Hutchinson Island. “Scott’s demonstrated interest in the environment and his business acumen make him a great fit for our board at this time as we look to broaden our reach and build an endowment,” Perry said. “Environmental stewardship of Florida’s coastal ecosystems has long been an interest of mine,” Turnbull said. “I’ve admired FOS’ advocacy, research projects and work educating the public, especially children, to be environmentally aware and engaged in preserving our waterways.” He has served on the board of Treasured Lands, a Martin County land trust that preserves critical lands and waterways and educates the next generation of environmental stewards. Photo courtesy of Lorrianna Colozzo Soprano Lorrianna Colozzo, a Palm City resident, will open the newly refurbished Lyric Theatre’s 2014-2015 season with ‘A Night at the Opera’ Nov. 14. “The Barber of Seville” with the Barcelona Opera Studio. Colozzo began to sing opera when she was 14. “My teacher told me to sing the aria “O mio babbino caro,” (“Oh My Beloved Father,”) Colozzo said. “When she said I should learn it as a 14-year-old, I thought of opera (singers) as large women and not understanding what they meant. Then I studied the song and I sang high notes that made me feel free. I felt emo-

tion in the core of my body. The aria was so beautiful and emotional that I connected to it and it truly affected me. “We all love to sing and (with) the arias all of the singers have chosen, we want the audience to feel connected to the character. Opera is about heightened emotional states. What I’ve learned as a singer and one of the pleasures of being an opera singer is the opportunity to use my voice to connect to those heightened

emotions.” The four singers will perform solos, duets and ensemble pieces. She is thrilled that the program will open the Lyric’s new season “I’m very honored,” she said. “How wonderful is that? I’m sure John Loesser has something planned. What better way to open than with opera? The idea is to leave your old ideas at the door. When people think of opera,

MARTIN COUNTY — When Lorrianna Colozzo performs at the Lyric Theatre, she has the home field advantage. Colozzo, who has a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from the prestigious Peabody Conservatory of Music, lives in Palm City and has performed at the Lyric many times. Colozzo returns to the Lyric stage Nov. 14 to open the theater’s season and give patrons a view of the refurbished venue. Her program, “A Night at the Opera,” features Colozzo singing arias from “Madame Butterfly,” “The Barber of Seville,” and “Carmen.” Colozzo, who has performed with the Palm Beach Opera, will be accompanied by pianist Evan Ferrar. Colozzo is bringing a few of her friends to join her. Bass baritone Clayton Mathews has performed in “Aida” and “I Puritani” and will star in George Gershwin’s opera, “Blue Monday” for the Harlem Opera Theatre. Mezzo-soprano Christina Zimmer has experience in opera and Broadway productions. She sang the role of Julie in “Show Boat” with Opera Naples and has appeared with the Miasma Symphony Orchestra. Tenor Angelo Marchese has performed with the Toledo Opera, Naples Opera and Miami Lyric Opera. He recently performed in
