physically cross the bridge,” he said. Don’t. Denti advises against planning any strolls or rolls over the bridge until middle to late November. Veterans Memorial, what many call the Indian Street Bridge, will still be a construction site protected by state laws for weeks after it seems ready to cross.

“We’ll have high security up there to make sure anybody who wants to be the first to cross won’t,” Denti said. “That would be trespassing. It is a felony that could be enforced.” No, really. It’s a Florida statute that trespassing on a construc-

The dance duo earned the first place prize, factoring in the judge’s score and the $33,000 raised for the dance competition that benefits Martin County Healthy Start Coalition. A total of $132,000 was raised by all the dancers and contributors exceeding any totals from previous events.

TREASURE COAST — To its critics, the Southeast Florida Regional Partnership’s Seven50 Southeast Florida Prosperity Plan is a usurpation of property rights and local government. To its supporters, it’s necessary regional planning for inevitable population growth that had widespread public contribution. The American Coalition 4 Property Rights, an advocacy organization formed to oppose the partnership, had a presentation about the developing Seven50 Plan at the Peter & Julie Cummings Library, Palm City, on Saturday, Sept. 28. About 100 attended. “In the end, it’s about controlling decisions, controlling local government, controlling individuals,” Kate

Inmates advocate for St. Lucie River, Indian River Lagoon Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — Sarah Heard, Martin County Commission chairwoman, gets a lot of mail. For a letter to get framed and put on her office wall takes a bit. But that’s what’s happening with Palm City’s William Bohrer’s recent note to her. He wrote to the chairwoman in September thanking her for efforts to “restore our area waterways and quality of life.” Heard said the frame is going to wait a few weeks. “I’m going to Washington (D.C.) to lobby very hard on behalf of the Indian River Lagoon, and that letter is going with me,” she said in a phone interview. The letter will go with Heard, but Bohrer can’t. He’s an inmate at the Martin County Jail. In a video interview at the jail, he said inmates were recently riveted by her appearance on a local television talk show. “We have TV on Mondays,” he said. “I saw Sarah Heard. We were all huddled around the TV. I said, ‘Let’s do something positive and send her a prayer.’” Bohrer is has an extensive arrest record

Inmate William Bohrer wrote a letter signed by 38 others to Sarah Heard, Martin County Commission chairwoman. Bohrer wanted to encourage her efforts to protect the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon.

BRIDGE from page 1 tion site can fetch an offender a third-degree felony conviction. A dedication ceremony is scheduled for Nov. 16. Among other festivities, folks will be able to walk on the bridge all they want to take in a simultaneous antique-car and boat parade. Dedication festivities will launch with a 5K run at about 7 a.m. MCM Timing and Results, Jensen Beach, is organizing the run. After the 5K, dignitaries such as county commissioners will ceremonially dedicate the bridge. The bridge will most likely not be opened right after the dedication ceremony. It could take a few more weeks to finish for opening to regular traffic. Of the bridges 19 decks, 17 are done. Something as seemingly simple as pouring a spot of cement takes on titanic dimensions in bridge construction. A single deck — the surfaces cars travel over — on the bridge is 145 feet long, 115 feet wide. That’s 600 cubic yards of concrete, or 65 mixers’ worth. While unusually heavy summer rains have greatly slowed the work, the Treasure Coast hasn’t had any major weather events, hurricanes, that completely stopped it. However, the North Atlantic isn’t out of hurricane season yet. The peak runs from the middle of August until late October. Hurricane season ends on Nov. 30. “We have completed all of the most complex and difficult work,” Denti said in a phone interview in early September. “Everything from here is downhill. Cleaning up and straighten up.” He added, “There are no more unknowns, beyond weather events, that

could make this project unsuccessful. The tough stuff is done.” Among other projects in September, crews started planing the bridge. “We’re longitudinally grinding the bridge decks for ride-ability,” Denti said. “When you pour concrete, there’s human error. There’s imperfections.” Much like carpenters have planers to smooth wood. Bridge builders have them, too. Only, the ones for bridges are huge affairs that are dozens of feet long and come on wheels. To reduce dust, they spray water on the concrete they grind. Without that … “It would be really dusty out here,” Denti said. “That would be a disaster ecologically.” Because most of that dust would settle on the already stressed St. Lucie River. But the mix of concrete dust and water could also be a huge problem if it were left on the bridge. Those planers come with accompanying trucks that essentially vacuum up the sludge. “We have a word for it,” Denti said. “We call it slurry. We don’t want all the slurry on the ground.” Crews continued work on landscaping Martin Highway approaching the bridge through September. Most of the landscaping is low-profile plants, such as shrubs and groundcover, to ensure drivers’ visibility. It’ll look like a king’s ransom was spent on bricks for the center islands. Not so. That’s colored concrete stamped to look like bricks. Not nearly as costly as bricks, but not cheap. Crews also started constructing large welcome signs on the Palm City and Stuart sides of

Additionally, when crews poured the various sections, called decks, they couldn’t get the concrete between them precisely aligned. Leveling the concrete increases the comfort of drivers crossing the bridge. Hall and Howard are from Lake City.

BRIDGE from page 4 the bridge. Denti said the roadway aesthetics are important because the bridge will become a major gateway into Palm City. The Veterans Memorial Bridge is a 100-year design. That is, if done correctly, it should be at least 100 years before it needs major maintenance. The Federal Highway Administration is funding the

$65-million bridge construction through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The project was originally estimated to cost more than $120 million. However, due to the construction bust in 2008, the cost of building materials dropped significantly, and contractors generally lowered their bids. The Martin County Board of County Commissioners in 2011 voted to name the 3,100-foot structure Veterans Memorial Bridge. Speak up about abuse – sometimes that’s the first step to stopping it Editor’s note: Twenty-four years ago, Congress proclaimed the month of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The story you’re about to read is quite common, yet continues to be told, year after year, person after person. Jill Borowicz, CEO of SafeSpace, a local shelter for domestic violence victims, quoted some statistics in a recently published piece: “One out of every three women will be a victim of domestic violence in their lifetime. There is no bigger threat to women today. Not cancer. Not heart disease.” A proclamation is a start, but 24 years later, we ought to be further along in combatting this dirty little secret which remains largely considered a private matter. The following is my story. My hope is someone will recognize themselves or someone they know who is experiencing a similar situation, and take action. If you are a victim of abuse and need help, if you are in immediate danger, call 911. The local shelter, SafeSpace, can offer assistance with programs and counseling, as well as provide a safe place to stay. You can reach SafeSpace at 1 (800) 500-1119. “When I saw my baby cry I knew that he loved me That was some great victory He cried because of me He hit me with his belt But his tears were all I felt When I saw my baby cry

to wrap up some things. I was considering going to lunch and talking it over. The stylist cutting his hair was talking to the stylist at the next station: “Did you hear that (soand-so) beat the crap out of his wife the other day?” Stylist No. 2: “Really? Wonder what she did to deserve that?” I looked at Stylist No. 2 in disbelief. Did she really just say what I just heard? A split second later, the flashbacks started. My clothes all over the lawn, front yard and back, where he’d thrown them. His voice messages, threatening to turn on the sprinklers and ruin my entire wardrobe. Me, ignoring my incessantly ringing cell phone and looking at the dingy walls of the Motel 6, my few-miles-downthe-road refuge at that moment, scared to death he might drive by and see my car. Other pictures flooded my mind. Me, crouching in a closet, hearing him wandering through the house, looking for me, angry, opening and closing closet doors, calling my name. Me crawling behind a hedge at a house down the street, trying to talk sotto-voce to one of his daughters — the only one who can calm him down — on my cell phone because it’s 4 a.m. and I don’t want to wake the neighbors … Countless, numerous pictures run a continuous and fast-paced loop in my head. His voice catapults me back to the present day and the hair salon. “So, lunch?” he says, freshly shorn, grinning and now spun around in the chair to face me. The mental slide show does another furious spin through my brain. I looked at the two women who were just talking about an abused woman they both knew, them wondering what she did to bring it upon herself. I looked at him, my ex, and another picture popped up in my head: him in handcuffs, clad in only his underwear, being led away from the house by deputies. I blinked. He, right in front of me at that moment, looked harmless. He was in “nice mode.” He just wanted to talk. Then I remembered, that’s how it started last time. He was nice, charming, and apologetic. That night ended with him threatening to throw me off the balcony of the fifth-floor hotel room where we were staying. What did I do to deserve that? I’d fallen asleep before he was ready for me to go to sleep. I hear my girlfriend’s recent words ringing in my ears: “If you go back with him, I’m not talking to you anymore. A good friend of

mine was killed that way …” I looked at my ex-boyfriend, who wanted to talk me into coming home, to the house we’d shared for two years, the place that contained all the dirty little secrets of our four-year turbulent relationship. “No,” I said, about lunch. “I can’t.” I walked out of the salon, and didn’t look back — that day. Those women, ignorant as they sounded, probably saved my life. The man whom I hid in closets from was a professional engineer, employed with a world-renowned company, possessed a Mensa-level IQ and bigger ego. He commanded $100,000-a-year-plus salary; he wore suits and ties to work every day, and no one at the fancy corporate lunches and dinners he attended regularly would have ever guessed he was capable of banging my head against the wall hard enough to take two weeks for the swelling to go down. I think I had a concussion, but I’ll never know. I didn’t go to the hospital, because I didn’t want to get him in trouble. That’s what I tried to explain to the prosecutor, when — after one night he threatened to knock my teeth down my throat and threw a pseudo-punch whizzing an inch past my face, twice — I called the cops. The prosecutor pleaded with me, but I couldn’t go all the way. The state offers a comprehensive, 26-week domestic violence awareness education program for first-time offenders, but the only way he was going to be required to attend was for me to press charges. But if I had pressed charges, he would have lost his security clearance, and therefore, his high-paying, prestigious job. Still, the prosecutor kept pushing. Why, lady, is pressing charges in my best interest? Don’t you, with all your training in domestic violence, know that’s the most dangerous thing I could do, report him and cause him to lose his job? Then he has nothing to lose. And then he’s REALLY coming after me … I wish I could say I walked away immediately and made a clean break. Logically, it doesn’t make sense to stay with someone who’s hurting you on a regular basis. But that’s not exactly what happened. And the biggest question I answer, from those who know about it, is, why did I stay? Why didn’t I walk at the first sign of trouble? Well … my answer is not going to be much different than that of

ABUSE from page 6 countless others who have endured such treatment. He was charming, smart, treated me well 95 percent of the time … I thought I loved him. I made excuses: His last wife cheated on him, so it’s natural for him to accuse me; he’s wounded, so he acts out; if I just show him enough love, he will stop being this way and become my white knight once again … This man — who went to the trouble of finding and wrapping a cloth around my shoulders when he noticed me shivering at an outdoor event — was the same man who turned into a monster at the slightest provocation, or none at all. And I never knew when the monster was coming out. No one else ever saw the monster, just me and the grown daughters, whom were all aware of his temper, but grew up “going along to get along.” They were relieved not to be the momentary targets of his wrath. And he was always so nice a few days later. The man I fell in love with returned, temporarily. But the monster always returned, too, and the time between acts was getting shorter. I am fortunate that I was not economically dependent on him, as is the case with many who find themselves unable to easily walk

out of an abusive situation. Nor did we have small children together to serve as mini-hostages. Still, it wasn’t easy to go. His reaction to the mere thought of my walking away ran the gamut from not caring at all to threatening suicide. I was on such an emotional roller coaster, after so long, I began to think I was the crazy one. And I continued to hold out hope: If I just do THIS, or don’t do THAT, he won’t get angry. If I just tiptoe around him, everything will be OK. It has taken a lot of counseling, tears, and research to realize I wasn’t the problem. It has taken me years to be able to publicly talk about this. I’m telling it now because before it happened to me, I once upon a time looked at professional, intelligent people in abusive situations and asked the same question everybody asks: Why didn’t he or she just leave? If my girlfriend hadn’t been so insistent about cutting me off if I hadn’t cut HIM off, my personal history might be reading quite a bit differently today. Please, if you know someone who is in an abusive situation, take a leaf out of my girlfriend’s book and offer something stronger than sympathy. For me, it was the first step on the long road toward becoming healthy again. Tammy Raits is managing editor of Your Voice News & Views.

I can’t say if it is the economy, the size of our practice, or the location of our building, but something is attracting cold calls by telephone, email and in person in numbers never seen in my career. I realize that sales people have a job to do, and please do not take any of my comments directed toward them personally — I basically like all people. I just get very annoyed by some of their techniques. I could probably spend 30 hours a day lately dealing with cold sales calls. I think part of the problem is that my contact information is being gleaned from MGMA, FLMGMA and the local MGMA chapter websites. I am active in these organizations and it is very easy for a less than assertive salesperson to obtain my contact info from any of those organizations. These cold calls, visits and emails would not be so unwelcomed and abrupt if a little common sense and courtesy was applied by the salesperson. I doubt many salespeople would want me calling or visiting a place where they were closing a sale unannounced, interrupting what they were doing. I am sure

some just trying to keep ahead of running the office or being run by our office. (Couple that amount of work with blog writing and list serve participation … well ... ) There are three infringement sales techniques that I’ll address in this blog, but if you are a sales person, don’t be afraid, I will also give you some tips and hints on how to convert your abrupt art of cold calling and interruptions into a workable business relationship that will help both of us. First, we can talk about the “pants-on-fire” salesperson. He or she is the one who calls or shows up at your office stating they have an appointment, or talked to Dr. X who told them it would be good for them to come by. I keep my appointment calendar and due to the pace of our office, it stays full with blocked slots. I also will normally call my front desk and let them know 15-30 minutes ahead of time if I am expecting someone. The “pants-on-fire” salesperson could save themselves a bunch of gas and time by never coming to my office if they cannot be honest. If they come in untruthful to start off with, any business relationship that develops after that will surely not be a trustworthy one. If you want to get your product or service reviewed/considered, be up front and truthful. Don’t think that your will win extra clever

points sliding in a side door being deceptive. The second type of salesperson is the “I’ll beat anybody’s price” salesperson. This technique is not something that is appreciated, either. Again, it all goes back to time available to negotiate and evaluate current services or products and the potential of changing them. I DO NOT GIVE OUT ANY OF MY VENDORS PRICES TO THEIR COMPETITORS! I expect my current vendors to be giving me their best price, and as a result, I do not share their pricing with those in competition with them. Also, if you are coming to me to sell me your product/service, I expect you to be giving me your best price when you quote it. And a little side note, if I am currently doing business with you and decide to change, that is not the time to let me know that you can lower my prices. You have just done two things then. You have let me know that you have been overcharging me for the entire time we have been doing business and you have ensured that I most likely will not be doing any business with you in the future. I’d like to entitle the next salesperson type “the woodpecker.” No matter if it is by telephone, email or in person, this type of salesperson keeps showing up, pecking and pecking at you and your

public meetings, gather information and facilitate drafting a regional planning guide. Public meetings started in 2012. Words such as “sustainable” raise critics’ concerns. They say that HUD is using grant funding to implementing portions of the United Nation’s Agenda 21 through regional planning projects, such as Seven50. While the United States is a signatory to the international document, the Senate never ratified it as a treaty. The U.N. Conference on Environment and Development produced Agenda 21 in 1992 as a voluntary action plan for sustainable development. Agenda 21’s critics have long said it’s communism in cloak. The Martin Republican resolution opposing Seven50 refers to Agenda 21 numerous times. “United Nations Agenda 21 operates through ‘sustainable development’ and ‘smart growth’ policies which are being enacted by Regional Visioning Projects and other such initiatives and projects, as revealed in government documents such as the one featuring the South Florida Regional Planning Council and ‘Seven50: Southeast Florida Prosperity Plan,’” the resolution reads. St. Lucie West resident and blogger Suzanne Eovaldi fears the implementation of plans developed by the Southeast Florida Regional Partnership in St. Lucie County would mean low-income

Boland, chairwoman of the Martin County Republican Party, said at the meeting. The Martin Republican Party issued a resolution in May opposing the partnership and its Seven50 Plan. Ed Fielding, Martin County Commissioner and member of the partnership’s executive committee, said such characterizations are simply wrong. “(Seven50) is a voluntary planning effort that is a cooperative effort by the seven counties of Southeast Florida,” Fielding said. “In that region, there’s about 6.5 million people. During the next 50 years, that’s expected to increase about 50 percent.” Fielding is a Republican. The “Seven” in Seven50 is for seven counties, Broward, Indian River, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties. The “50” is for 50 years. The partnership was launched in 2009 by the South Florida and Treasure Coast Regional Planning councils to apply for a $4.25 million grant from the Departments of Housing and Urban Development’s, HUD, Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant Program. The partnership was one of 45 successful grant applicants. It hired Dover, Kohl & Partners of Coral Gables to help facilitate

Staff photo by Patrick McCallister Palm City’s Jackie Maimone speaks at the American Coalition 4 Property Rights recent meeting about Seven50 at the Peter & Julie Cummings Library. The group opposes Seven50, what supporters say is an effort to better unify the planning efforts of Broward, Indian River, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties. Critics say Seven50 will pre-empt property rights and local government. Maimone is a member of the coalition and helped organize the meeting. housing forced into affluent areas. “Targets of opposition are precincts in PGA (Village) and Tradition and a precinct in North Hutchinson Island,” Eovaldi said in an interview. Eovaldi said money used to promote Seven50 is wrongly spent and she hopes the St. Lucie County Commission will reject the final plan. “They’re using taxpayer money to promote this highly speculative, socialism agenda,” Eovaldi said. The St. Lucie commission is set to review a draft of the Seven50 Plan on Nov. 7, Tod Mowery, chairman, said. Mowery is the vice chairman of the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council. “The plan is nonbinding and is developed for various communities to review,” Mowery said. The draft, which is essentially a study of how different areas and communities would be affected by Seven50, should be finalized sometime in February, Mowery said. The commission can choose to adopt the plan or parts of it, he said. It can also be rejected all together, he said. Nevertheless, critics, such as Phyllis Frey, co-founder of the American Coalition 4 Property Rights, say that the Southeast Florida Regional Partnership is a Trojan horse and its Seven50 Plan will become an enforceable document giving the partnership widespread power to veto local government’s development decisions. “No matter what Seven50 tells you now, they will hold all the

The History of Afternoon Tea Tea consumption increased dramatically during the early nineteenth century and it was around this time that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford is said to have complained of “having that sinking feeling” during the late afternoon. At the time, it was usual for people to eat only two main meals a day, breakfast and dinner at around 8 o’clock in the evening. The solution for the Duchess was a pot a tea and a light snack, taken privately in her boudoir during the afternoon.

for minor, non-violent offenses. He admits to drug and alcohol abuse, but wouldn’t go into details. He’s now in a voluntary, faith-based drug rehabilitation program at the jail that’s run by Dunklin Memorial Church. Not only did Bohrer write the letter promising Heard prayer for her efforts to protect the St. Lucie River Estuary and Indian River Lagoon, but he got another 38 inmates to sign it. “There’s 500 people in this jail,” he said. “It seems like we could contribute something.” Sheriff William Snyder said he takes heart that Bohrer wrote the letter. He said it would be easy for an inmate to be obsessed with his own problems. “I see this as a positive sign that he’s looking beyond himself and his issues and thinking globally,” the sheriff said. Snyder added, “I’m very pleased that one of our inmates is thinking of someone other than himself and is thinking of society as a whole.” Bohrer’s permanent home is on Cornell Avenue, about a block and a half from Charlie Leighton Park, beside the Palm City Bridge. He said he frequently walks to it to watch the river. Bohrer said other inmates are often homeless and fish in the local waterways to get food. For others, local waterways are where they essentially bathe. “A lot of it is we all use (the St.

planning control,” she told attendees at the recent meeting in Martin County. Fielding said that critics’ charges that the partnership will become a megalithic overseer enforcing the Seven50 Plan is baseless. “That’s just a fantasy,” he said, “Not even a favorable fantasy. It’s a fear.” Fielding added that after the HUD grant funding for it runs out next year, the partnership will disappear. What’ll be left, he said, is a document that can help local governments make planning choices for decades.

Lucie River) in one way or another,” Bohrer said. Borher is also writing Gov. Rick Scott about proposed changes in the criminal justice system. He also plans to write the governor about the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon. Both have been negatively affected by Army Corps of Engineers water discharges from Lake Okeechobee into the C-44 Canal, which empties into the St. Lucie. “It’s the right thing to do,” he said. “It’s a good thing.” Bohrer said he was surprised to get media attention over the letter. He hopes that it’ll affect the way people think of inmates. “We’re people, too,” he said. “We’re just locked up.” The sheriff said law enforcement and incarceration are necessary to maintain a civil society, but they must be tempered with compassion and give people the needed tools to reform themselves. “Even though they’re in jail, they’re still members of our society,” he said, and added, “We need to provide them with the means to escape their habits if possible.” Heard said the letter is also a positive reflection on the county. “Only in Martin County do you have prisoners intently watching the news and are so concerned about water quality and quality of life that they took the time to write about it,” she said. Heard represents the area around Port Salerno to Tropical Farms.

SALES from page 9 staff with their information weekly, monthly, quarterly, whatever frequency, over and over and over. All the while, they email, call and show back up stating that they never heard from us and that they would stop emailing, calling, coming by if we could just meet with them and tell them why we aren’t interested in their service/product. These are really appreciated all the more when you get a message that “I haven’t heard back from you, so I’ll just drop in next week when I am by your place.” Here’s probably the best tip for cold-call salespeople using “the woodpecker” technique — if I don’t email or call you back, especially after three or four contacts from you — I am not interested at all. I know it may seem rude to people that I actually ignore sales calls, but with the amount I receive, spending just 10 minutes per call could eat up a very large portion of my day. I know all the above sounds like the ranting of an unappreciative grouchy old man, but I do have some advice as to how to “get to us” with your sales pitches. If you glean our contact info from organizations, join the organization, come to functions they sponsor, or go as a visitor of a client to a meeting or such. Sales calls do not seem near as cold when peo-

ple can attach a name to a face, or at least know who you are with or who you are prior to calling or dropping by our places of work. Also, be truthful and up front when you call or visit and office, and pay as much respect to the receptionists and phone people as you do the owners/managers/ physicians. And finally, especially during these tough and changing economic times, realize that your best price is what will so many times make or break your offer. Keep in mind I did not say lowest, because cheapest is not always best. Show the value for your service/product related to your price and then give us your best price, and you will be amazed at how many sales can be made. Emanuel said that new solar technology is an interesting development in the business, and a 30 percent federal tax credit makes it even more attractive. “There are also a lot of programs that help people purchase air conditioners,” he said. “They include 60 month no-interest financing, rebates and FPL incentives.” Emanuel noted that his staff is happy to help customers navigate the different programs. Energy conservation is important to everyone and the company’s

While the business demands a lot of his time, Emanuel relaxes with his band, Eklektik Storm. The group plays music from classic rock to Motown to country to pop in clubs in south Florida. He is optimistic about the direction the business is taking. “We are expanding,” he said. “We’re able to expand because of the improved economy. People are buying a little more. There are additional sales because of a better economy. We do see some growth.” Adam’s Air Conditioning is located at 582-584 N.W. Mercantile Place, Port St. Lucie. JazzScat Corner was born a few weeks ago when I had a chance to sit down with Steve Erlanger, who’s way more than the publisher of Your Voice News & Views. An active member of the community and an ardent supporter of the arts, Steve and I talked about how to let people know about the music, dancing, cultural enrichment, and fun happening right here. Steve offered to let us connect with the wonderful Your Voice readers once a month to keep you posted on all we’ve got to share. Have you ever found yourself sitting in an easy chair, watching Vanna spin the Wheel of Fortune and wondering if you might just be missing out on something better? How long since you’ve gotten up in the morning and been really excited about something terrific you had planned for that very evening? For about the price of a cup of coffee and donut at the local drive-through, you could be enjoying an entire evening of fantastic, live music courtesy of the professionals involved with the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society.

ties all to help enrich the area’s population and share our love of music and the most American of all musical art forms, Jazz and Blues. In addition to master classes, scores of local performances, and the coordination of the weekly Jazz Market on Saturday mornings by the fountains in downtown Fort Pierce, members of the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society work tirelessly throughout the year in an effort to raise money to fund scholarships for talented student musicians and raise the level of cultural influence in the Treasure Coast area. In addition to our regular Tuesday nights at the Black Box Theatre in historic downtown Fort Pierce, where $5 gets you three hours of live, professional music, refreshments, and more humor than you can imagine. We also have our Wednesday Night Jazz Jams just down the street at Tutto Fresco or the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens. We also have some special events coming up, including an Irish Jiggidy Jazz Jam on Oct. 15 featuring Irish music you just have to hear to believe, and Big Band Night FDO, Big Swingin’ Band on

Oct. 29. During the coming months, guest columnists like the renowned Gene Hull and Doc Grober will share with you even more of the fabulous opportunities for music, friendship and fun that we’ve got coming up, so be sure to keep your mailbox clear for your weekly copy of Your Voice, and if you’re on the web, check us out at www. jazzsociety.org, or friend us on Facebook and Twitter. If you’d like to become a member or volunteer so you can get exclusive deals, discounts, and chances to be the first to check out the latest tunes, we’d love to hear from you at (772) 460-JAZZ (5299) today. Sure, you could sit home and watch Vanna spin the wheel and Alex quiz the guests on Jeopardy, or you could be tapping your toes and making musical memories that will last a lifetime. Go ahead, “start the car, I know a whoopee spot where the gin is cold and the piano’s hot. It’s just a noisy hall where you can have a ball and all that jazz.”

MARTIN COUNTY ‑— The Stuart Community Concert Band is an all-volunteer group of musicians from all walks of life. The group includes doctors, lawyers, teachers and people who played in the band in junior high or high school and just want to rekindle their love of music. One-quarter of the band members come from Palm City. Neil Compton, who plays the flute and piccolo, is the group’s president. A retired engineer, he

moved to Florida in 2009. “I played in community bands throughout my life,” he said. “I looked for a community band online before I moved here. I went to rehearsal the day I came to town. I love to play music, as do many of our members. We’re a volunteer organization, playing for the love of it.” The group has reeds, woodwinds, brass and percussion sections, and new members are always welcome. “If you have the ability to play an instrument, come check us out at rehearsal,” Compton said. “There

should be some skill level, but if you played in junior high or high school and want to dust it off, come on over.” The band rehearses on Monday evenings from mid-August to late May in the band room at Stuart Middle School. Chris Kalwa, band director at Stuart Middle, is the band’s conductor and director. Kalwa is also an associate band director at Jensen Beach High School. Compton said that the band, begun in 1915, has had a storied history. “It’s been around 100 years,” he said. “The bandstand in the park in Stuart was rebuilt because the band was too big for it.” At different times, the group was disbanded or suspended, but it always came back. The latest incarnation dates back to 1992. When the band lost its rehearsal space in at Stuart Middle School. Eighteen months ago, the band created of board of directors and began working toward 501(c) (3) status. This year, the group will be presenting concerts at the Kane Center and the Blake Library. “Finding a home at the Kane Center was a big win,” he said. “We filled it twice last year. They were overflowing.” The group will hold a concert at the center on Oct. 6. The performance, “Themes from the Silver Screen,” will pay tribute to music that gave life to man movies, including “The King and I,” “Chicago,” and a variety of Cole Porter classics. The band will hold its popular holiday concert on Dec. 14. While there will be two performances, the show is free and first-come, first served, and tickets go quickly. This year, the band will add a performance on Dec. 15 at the Kane Center. Tickets for the show for Kane Center members are $5 in advance and $7 at the door; for non-members, tickets are $6 in advance and $8 at the door.

PALM CITY — When Palm City resident Barbara Essenwine was asked to fill a spot on her company’s charity sporting clay team three years ago, she figured it was worth a shot. Little did she know she would quickly go from a shooting neophyte to helping plan a sporting clay shoot event for an organization close to her heart, Kiwanis Club of Stuart. Essenwine, along with community volunteers Chappy Young, Jennifer Williamson and Steven Swann, who are sporting clay experts and big supporters of the Kiwanis goal of building the special needs park, are coordinating the civic organization’s second Kiwanis Clay Shoot Challenge sponsored by Steven Swann – Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Straight shooters and novices will have an opportunity to test their marksmanship at the sporting clay tournament, to be held at the South Florida Shooting Club in Palm City on Saturday, Nov. 9, from noon to 5 p.m. The event also includes lunch, and following the shoot a cocktail reception, dinner and Chinese and silent auctions will be held as well as an opportunity to buy raffle tickets to win a “luxury” all-terrain vehicle and a shotgun. New this year is an opportunity to participate in “Gnat” shooting where participants will have an opportunity to shoot down small, high speed, maneuverable, radio controlled airplanes. All proceeds from the event will help Kiwanis Club of Stuart stay on target with the construction of an inclusive playground at Kiwanis Park. The park is estimated to cost between $175,000 and $200,000 to complete. Kiwanis Club of Stuart has been raising funds for the initiative for more than a year and will begin construction by the end of the year. The cost to participate in the Kiwanis Challenge is $200 per shooter. Sponsorships start at $1,000 and include a squad of four. Tickets for the cocktail reception and dinner can also be purchased separately for $50 each. Raffle tickets and event reservations can be purchased online at www.kiwanisclubofstuart.org, directly from Kiwanis members or at GCY Professional Surveyors & Mappers, 1505 S.W. Martin Highway, Palm City. For information, call (772) 286-8083.
