MARTIN COUNTY — County Commissioner Doug Smith is running for re-election in District 1, looking to extend his now 15-year influence in the county. “Job creation is significantly important to our economy and our residents,” Smith said. “We need to be getting out of the way of businesses. We need to allow them an atmosphere that promotes their ability to grow.” Since serving on the County Commission since 2000, Smith said he has seen the business development board empowered to work with businesses and create new jobs. But in recent years, the same development board has been stifled. “There are significant barriers that have been put up by this current County Commission majority, we need to reduce and remove some of those barriers,” Smith said. Over the course of three years, Smith said, it has become a struggle for big and small businesses alike to get anything done in Martin County due to “invasive” rules that apply to everything from the simplest to most complex of permits. “We ought to be able to still have a very controlled atmosphere, but within reasonable limits. We still ought to be able to have good job growth and business growth,”

MARTIN COUNTY — Sheriff William Snyder has announced his candidacy for reelection in 2016. “I have a resume and background commensurate to this job,” he said. “I have to run on my record here.” Snyder edged out candidates

David Dees and John “Ski” Pietruszewski in the 2012 Republican primary and went on to a win over write-in candidate Trent Wetherald in the general election. He’s the county’s eighth sheriff. Snyder took the oath of office in January 2013, about 30 years after starting his law-enforcement career in Miami. After a 20-year career in Miami Snyder moved to Martin Coun-

ty in 1993. He worked at the Sheriff’s Office under Robert Crowder. He was the department’s chief criminal investigator and was promoted to director of law enforcement. Snyder was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2006 and served there for six years, winning two reelections.

Creating Smiles... Changing Lives...

Smith said. Promoting economic growth will make Martin County an attractive place for its youth to settle down in in the future, Smith said. For Martin County kids going off to college, it is important they are able to look back home and see a place that can provide jobs with good wages, and an affordable place to live and grow their families, Smith said. Part of Smith’s plan to get business back on track and accelerating the economy includes putting certain items back on the table that the current commission voted down. Those items include but are not limited to the customs office at the airport, reconsidering certain bridge and road projects, and looking back into capital improvement plans in Palm City and Hobe Sound. During his time on the Commission, Smith said he has been dedicated to working on the restoration of the County’s rivers, the Indian River Lagoon and the National Everglades Project. “For 15 years, I’ve spent working non-stop on trying to make our role as prominent as possible” when it comes to decisions on Martin County and surrounding area’s waterways. Gaining full funding for the $600 million C-44 Reservoir and Stormwater Treatment Area project in Indiantown, Smith said, has been

Doug Smith one of the single most significant accomplishments he has helped drive during his time on the Commission. Despite many waterway restoration and construction projects Smith has had a hand in, he aims to continue pushing for improvements during his next term. “I do about as much lobbying in Tallahassee and Washington for Martin County as I do for St. Lucie County,” because what happens to St. Lucie County’s rivers and basins directly affect what happens to Martin County’s. “My focus is to keep our community, county and legislature focused on the rest of our projects,” related to improving the County’s waterways, Smith said. Smith’s background is primarily in manufacturing. He ran several manufacturing companies and headed a marketing firm before joining the County Commission in 2015. He grew up in Westborough, Massachusetts but made Martin County his home in 1990.

We asked for your comments & we got them! Costco has generated a lot of talk throughout Palm City, and here’s what the residents are saying: “High Meadows Road is a twolane road. How are they going to fit 18-wheeler trucks through there? It’s going to be a mess,” said Milton Davis of Palm City. “It should be placed further west. I just don’t think we need a Costco and where they are putting it, by a school — is unbelievable. It doesn’t belong.” — Milton Davis “I just want to say that I’m thrilled to see a Costco come into our town. We are overloaded with pizza parlors and nail salons. I think the traffic will increase but not to a level of concern. I also think that Publix needs some competition. They have been getting away with high prices and lack of product variety for way to long. Just my opinion.” — Linda Miller “We are totally against Costco

“We were part-time residents of Palm City for many years and as of yesterday, Oct. 30 we have been full-time for the last 12. Since 1985 we have watched our wonderful hamlet of Palm City flourish into one of the best places to work and live in Florida. There have been many changes to Palm City and with change you have pros and cons. The expansion of Martin Highway is coming along beautifully. The Indian Street Bridge (which took a ridiculous amount of time to get done due to opposition) connects Palm City to Stuart and eases the traffic on the Palm City Bridge. The Indian Street Bridge has provided excellent health benefits for the residents as well. Just look at the pedestrian walking, biking,

Martin Downs Boulevard looks beautiful and hopefully Mapp Road will look great as well. The headline “Costco makes the move” is a delight to see. We did see the “Notice” posted at the property site two weeks ago and couldn’t be more thrilled. While some have said that building a Costco on the property at Mar-

COSTCO from page 3 “Your Voice,” we took notice of the residents with concerns of a Costco being too close to Hidden Oaks Middle School. There is enough distance for that to be of no concern. It makes more sense to be concerned with the expansion at Martin High School, bringing the playing field closer to Willoughby Blvd. and the prisoners directly across the street. Many have their concerns focused the wrong way. As a parent, I have more of a problem with the prison overlooking our children. Welcome Costco to Palm City!” —Greg of Palm City “Please let the Commission know that this Stuart resident who works in Palm City is AGAINST Costco from coming into Palm City at the proposed property. Total disaster as far as traffic jams and the potential for Middle Oaks students getting hurt by too many cars. It hurts my soul to see those beautiful pines come down for an ugly gas station and box store. Palm City is a beautiful unique town. Beautiful sub-divisions and horse farms. Keep it that way. Lots of room in Stuart for it.” — Arnold Holtz “The Costco plan for Palm City store is nearly perfect. The store will be located on the edge of town with access from a new four lane highway, the Florida turnpike, and Route 95 via High Meadows Ave. The store will be surrounded by land that can’t be developed and existing commercial enterprises. Currently, people who live in communities south of Martin Highway, on High Meadows Ave., use SW Berry Ave. when traveling east and High Meadows to travel south. Also, route 95 north is accessed from driving south on High Meadows Ave. Travel to the Florida Turnpike on Martin Downs Blvd. extension does require using High Meadows Ave. Folks who live off of Martin

Downs Blvd, Martin Highway and other interconnecting roads have numerous options for travel in all directions via Kanner Hwy., Murphy Road, and Route 714. After Costco is built, maybe all of the commuters to St. Lucie County might decide to find another route. The Costco store is perfect for shoppers (very competitive prices), location, jobs and should provide property tax benefits for the county. How fortunate for all of use to live in a nearly perfect, easily accessible location. I am not the appointed spokesperson of anyone, but almost everyone I know is in favor of the Costco location.” — Frank Desrosier “My family and I are very pleased Costco will be coming to Martin County; however, the proposed location on CT-714 is totally wrong in every way. That roadway is already overburdened with traffic serving the existing businesses, schools, homes, shopping centers, etc. Let me list the facilities located on that road at the present time starting at the new bridge with heavy traffic coming into Palm City: the Palm City Post Office, three shopping centers (including a Publix), five residential communities (Whispering Sound, Sawgrass Villas, Danforth, Oakbrook, Sunset Trace), a Hurricane Grill, a veterinary hospital, a large church, two public schools, a nursing home... and this is all within a one and a half mile distance on 714! And now a large Costco shopping/ auto service center added to that? Do we really want to destroy this beautiful corner of Palm City? As stated, the roadway being bombarded with all this development is approximately 1.5 miles in total length! Surely there is a better choice for location of this mega corporation. Why has the multi-acre land west of the Turnpike never been considered for a business of this size? It would seem a prime

Couch surfing lets travelers connect around the world FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

PALM CITY — Travel may often open doors to new cultures and experiences, but one Palm City business owner has spun a worldwide network of friends through a less conventional means of travel: couch surfing. In 2004, a small group of friends launched a website to help connect travelers with local hosts willing to offer up a spare bed or couch free of charge. “When I was younger, it started out to save money and be able to travel more,” said Jake Taylor, owner of Mr. T Window Cleaning in Palm City. “Anymore, it’s about the locals showing me around.” Local couch surfing hosts have guided Taylor to the best restaurants in Basque Country, the best beaches in Nice, France, and the best site seeing spots across Ireland. Taylor has returned to the same host in Paris twice, who showed him and a friend an off the beat-

en path restaurant with the best meats and cheeses. No one there was speaking English, and there were no other tourists in sight. “It was like one of those restaurants from a movie, just a little joint, where everything is so authentic,” Taylor said. On the hosting front, Taylor likes to lend out bicycles to guests who visit him in Palm City, and direct them to his favorite local restaurants and beaches. He has hosted a nursing student from California who was in town interviewing for a job, a couple riding their bicycles from Seattle to Key West, and even his host from Paris, among others. When it comes to safety, Taylor said couch surfers just need to do their homework. “You have to read people’s ratings and references,” Taylor said. “That’s what you have to go off of, your references and your interactions with people before you let them stay with you or you stay with them.” The site helps protect travelers and hosts alike by offering an

For Taylor, references have never steered him wrong. St. Lucie West-based teachers, Jason and Stephanie Agins, say

the site has given them lifelong friends in far-reaching corners of the globe, many they would have never meant on their own. The Agins were one week into a three week honeymoon in Europe when they got a feeling that they

“Because patient care should always come first”

location from accessibility viewpoint between the Turnpike and Route 95...both major highways would have direct and speedy destinations and it would be accomplished without impacting families whose chief concerns are the safety of their children enrolled in those two schools. I hope others who feel as I do about this issue will make their voices heard before it is too late. We are the tax payers and we do have a voice. I hope you will give serious thought to this message.” — Virginia Agar “Editor, you wanted opinions on how Costco coming to Palm City will affect the residents. I am pro Costco. It is about time that this facility came here. We are desperately in need of Costco. Where I lived before, Costco was available and not 27 miles away. We had a Costco, which was successful, a great help to the community with their lower prices and large selection of items, a pharmacy with lower prices, and fresh baked breads, cakes, plus all of the non-food items they carry at lower prices. Those who don’t know Costco will be surprised by the great deals and value of having this large facility with auto service and gas at lower prices. And it will be a boon to the small business owners also. I for one, can’t wait for it to open and I am sure there are many more people who feel the same —certainly all of us who drive the 27 miles to shop there. Hopefully you will receive more “Pro” e-mails, but usually most folks only take the time to write when they want to complain. WELCOME COSTCO. — Marie DiDonato

“We live off SW High Meadow and getting out of our development (no traffic light at the entrance) is getting more difficult due to the amount of traffic on High Meadow. Building a Costco @ High Meadow and Martin Hwy will make it 10 times more difficult. We would like to see a Costco built but not in Palm City at that location.”

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com — Bob Summerell “As a Palm City resident, living within two miles of the proposed Costco, I was surprised by your article in the Oct. 30 issue is implying that more negative than positive emails have been sent to the county. I have only heard positive comments from any of my friends and I even asked strangers after that article appeared and everyone that I asked is in favor of Costco. Are you sure these negative emails you’ve received are legitimate? The majority of anticipated customers would not be approaching past the middle school; access from the turnpike or 95 is west of the school. And the increased traffic on Martin Highway that you mentioned in the article has already been resolved by the widening of the road which will be completed well before Costco opens. I’ve shopped at Coscto for 20 years, both here in Florida and when I’ve traveled (even in Canada, although their products are slightly different) and I have never been disappointed in their products or service. What’s not to be thrilled about Coscto coming to Martin County? It’s a win for customers and employees and for tax income for Martin County. The road tax from the gas station alone will bring much needed funds for our road repairs and upgrades! — Barbara Zudans “High Meadow is only a two-lane road and gets congested with people trying to get to work and the school buses trying to get the kids to school. We do not need any more traffic. Also that intersection is always congested due to the Turnpike entrance/exit. I don’t object to Costco coming to Palm City just not in the residential areas.” — Marion McCall Editor’s note: Thank you for your comments and emails please feel free to comment on Costco coming to Palm City and we will share ‘Your Voice.’ Email us at news@yourvoiceweekly.com.

Along with seeing the daily impact of the HSTC while on the job, Zanetti has also benefited personally by way of a new best friend because of her connection with the organization. In December 2014, a 9-year-old Great Dane named Duke was surrendered at their Palm City location and within a week later, she was a new member of the family . “I myself now know what it’s like to be a rescue mom,” said Zanetti, who also coordinates the HSTC’s Paws & Claws Gala as well as schedules appearances for the animals at local community events. “It was love at first sight. She came home with me on New Year’s Eve, and I can’t imagine life without her. “It’s truly an unconditional love, and if it weren’t for this wonderful organization, our paths may never have crossed. I’m forever grateful to the HSTC for bringing us together.” For 60 years, the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast has been finding loving homes for unwanted, abandoned and neglected animals. The organization continues to expand its services and community programs annually. Last year alone, HSTC performed 3,686 spay and neuter surgeries and helped 2,179 animals find their furr-ever homes. Their Humane Education Pet Therapy volunteers are ambassadors working in the schools through their “Paws to Read” and ‘Lessons in Kindness’ programs, which improve literacy and self-esteem for hundreds of children each year. In 2014, volunteers spent 1,650 hours with children and an additional 1,900 hours with residents in local assisted living facilities. “Working at the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast is such a rewarding experience,” said Community Events Manager, Courtney Zanetti. “Every day I witness firsthand how abandoned, neglected and abused animals are given a second chance at life.” Although they have such a large impact on both animals and the community at large, the Humane Society of the Treasure Coast relies greatly on the public for funding and support through private donations and special events. Aerobatic talent unleashed Mitch Kloorfain

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

“Dear Mr. & Mrs. Kloorfain, due to a color deficiency we detected in the eyes of your son Mitchel we do not anticipate he seek a career in anything involving being able to discern color.” This was according to my elementary school nurse in Mt. Vernon, New York, in the early 1970s. It went on to specifically imply that this deficiency would affect my abilities to work as a pilot or a photographer and to definitely not seek any direction in those arenas. Fast forward10 years and I am already established as an up and coming photographer in my area. Fast forward 20 years later to the early 2000’s and I am just starting to accumulate air time flying with and photographically documenting some of the most talented pilots on the planet as they tour through our communities in the air shows they perform at. OK, so I am not actually flying (except for once time last year) and I am a passenger, but my inability to perceive colors hasn’t hindered me in the ways I was told as if it was carved on tablets and handed down a mountain

When the local air shows come into the communities that I cover photographically for Your Voice News & Views or Veteran Voice, I immediately start planning the time to be included on their ‘media day’. Flying on media day is a perk of the job that can nullify any

effects of the worst day in the last year. This year I drew the John Klatt card. I had met John and pilot counterpart Bill Stein Thursday, Oct. 29 two days before the start of the annual Stuart Air Show, at the hanger where his two Air National Guard planes sat stationary

outside a hanger on the tarmac at Witham Airfield. John Klatt served with the Air National Guard for 20 years in flying combat, air support, and humanitarian missions. Klatt flies a tandem show with

“Two of those terms I was the chairman of the judiciary committee,” he said. Snyder hadn’t been Sheriff very long before he made a controversial move. “The first thing we did immediately was do away with command staff,” Snyder said. “I streamlined our command staff.” He trimmed the command staff from 10 to seven. The move was aimed at reducing operating expenses at a department Snyder said needs to update its equipment. Much of the fleet was retained during tight budget years caused by the Great Recession. “Many of the cars when I got here had 150,000 miles,” Snyder said. “It’s OK if it’s your family car, but it’s not OK if you’re a first responder.” Additionally, the marine fleet needed new crafts, Snyder said. The Sheriff said the most important thing he’s done in his first term is open the department’s proverbial doors and gotten the public more involved. “Our social media has been phenomenal,” Snyder said. The department’s Facebook page has about 23,000 fans, up from about 1,400 when Snyder became Sheriff. Snyder has a criminal justice degree from Florida Gulf Coast University. He’s also an alum of the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the FBI National Academy. Snyder said that the biggest challenge that’ll face the Sheriff’s Office in the next few years is keeping the community’s trust while seeing to its safety. He

We weren’t really connecting with anyone,” said Jason, an American History teacher at International Connections Academy. The couple was headed to Barcelona from Rome, and Jason decided to look into what the couch surfing network had to offer. “It wasn’t so much a way to stay for free, we still stayed in hotels and hostels, but we would go to couch surfing meetups,” Jason said. Couch surfing meetups are organized events that bring couch surfing members together at a local establishment like a bar or coffee shop. “You basically just go there, and all the sudden you’re in a room with people from all over the world, and they all have the same goal of traveling and making

William Snyder said recent scrutiny of law-enforcement agencies sparked by controversial police shootings is going to continue for some time. He said some of the scrutiny is healthy accountability, and some is not. Snyder said whoever wins the 2016 election will have to be ready to talk openly to the press when people question the department’s handling of situations. “We’re going to have outcomes sometimes we have to explain,” Snyder said. “There will be incidents.” So far two others have announced candidacies for Sheriff: Dennis Root and Robert Leon Pryor Jr. Neither are running as Republicans. If both stay in the race it’ll be decided during the general election next November. More about Snyder’s reelection campaign is at www.facebook. com/WillDSnyder.

They have memories of breaking fast for Ramadan with a group on the beach in Casablanca, Morocco, exploring Prague with couch surfing friends from Turkey, and throwing a New Year’s Eve party on the road that Stephanie says is still the best she has ever been to. The couple currently has plans on the books to visit friends in Russia who will take them zip-lining, another friendship that formed at a couch surfing event. VETERANS from page 6 of idealistic individuals whose vision shaped a nation that cherishes freedom and where citizens pledge allegiance to a flag. These ideals are manifested in the diversity and resolve of our people. Throughout history, service men and women have demonstrated strength and resolve, preserving our freedom through service and sacrifice. Thus, it becomes our duty to support our troops and our veterans. President John F. Kennedy said, “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” Let’s also honor our nation’s veterans by proactively welcoming home the newly returned from deployment and acknowledging the sacrifices of veterans from generations past. Family members trying to understand veterans who have changed as a result of deployment can use the Department of Veterans Affairs’ program called “Coaching into Care” to get their loved ones the help they need. It’s adoption season on the Treasure Coast FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

TREASURE COAST — November is recognized as National Adoption month. This year, National Adoption Month focuses on the adoption of older youth currently in foster care—because “We Never Outgrow the Need for Family.” This theme calls attention to our nation’s population of older youth in foster care who need loving, permanent families. Compared to their peers, many youth in foster care face higher rates of poor outcomes, such as dropping out of high school, unemployment, and homelessness. Despite these challenges, research on positive youth development confirms that children and youth have the ability to overcome traumatic experiences and thrive in adulthood when they are connected to a strong, permanent support system. All youth need a sense of belonging; through adoption, youth are connected to a family who not only provide a sense of stability, but also help them navigate the complicated landscape of their emerging independence.

During National Adoption Month, prospective adoptive families can learn more about the needs of older youth and opportunities to positively guide them toward successful outcomes. Anyone interested in learning more about adoption is encouraged to join the Children’s Home Society of Florida at our adoption orientation session. The next meeting is scheduled to take place at 5:15 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 in the Children’s Home Society of Florida office (Room 4) at the Garden City Community Annex, located at 2102 NW Avenue Q in Fort Pierce. This informative, casual and free open house-style orientation will provide an overview of foster care adoption and answer all questions related to adoption and CHS’ adoption process. Please help us raise adoption awareness in our community as we try to find additional permanent “Forever Families” for local children in foster care. To reserve your spot or for more information, contact Children’s Home Society of Florida’s adoption information line at (772) 429-2001.

For the next 20 minutes, I divided my time between trying to photographically depict their talent and at times put my camera in my lap and be part of the moment that they were creating. Through a pair of headsets, I was able to audibly connect to Stein, who described each maneuver they performed, as I watched the separation of land and sky on the horizon spin like a Vegas roulette wheel on steroids. The common denominator for an experience like this is trust. I trust

both pilots (with my life) to exhibit their skills in a safe, thrilling way. I trust the harness enveloping me like I was a surrounded in shrink wrap when Stein went inverted and all I saw when I looked up was the ground. I trusted photographer Tom Gilmore with being able to make some stunning images of the stunts that can accompany this column to convey the thrills I have shared here. My trust did not go unwarranted. Pilots kept us safe. Safety harness worked while we were inverted, and Tom Gilmore captured the moments perfectly. In addition to flying tandem with Klatt, Stein was featured in a solo routine during the Stuart Air Show as well. Since it will be Stein I am flying with he went through all the checklists of safety and nausea that may need to be addressed. Happily, I excelled in both areas where neither, especially the latter, needed to be addressed again. In front of us was a chase plane for two photographers to capture the talented aerobatics of these skilled pilots. I had photographer and retired pilot, Tim Gilmore, working with us from the chase plane. If I may flash back to last year for a moment, I was the chase plane photographer with our guest columnist Christine Epps sharing her experience to preview the airshow. Having had the vantage point of watching these two planes sky dance above the landmarks of our community last year clearly was contrasted by flying in front of pilot Bill Stein and just a few feet away from John Klatt, as they followed one another to an area over the western part of Martin and St. Lucie counties.

A GoPro mounted camera captures Your Voice News & Views photographer Mitch Kloorfain photographing aerobatic pilot John Klatt during media day prior to the start of the annual Stuart Airshow last weekend.

house,” Jason said. It is common, the Agins said, to make an American meal for a guest, and for them to return the favor with a traditional meal from their country or culture. One year, for Halloween, Jason and Stephanie hosted friends from Turkey. “We went out and got costumes, it was like teaching a child about Halloween, they had no clue,” said Stephanie, a teacher at Florida Virtual. “That’s an experience they’re going to take back and share with their friends,” Jason added. When friends and family are skeptical about Jason and Stephanie’s decision to use the couch surfing platform to meet new friends, Stephanie said she does not allow room for negative comments. “I just show people pictures and explain all the positives before they even have a chance to talk about the negatives,” she said. “One of the things that I’ve

Show brings famed composer to Stuart Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

STUART – Stephen Schwartz has always had a unique perspective on familiar stories. In “Wicked,” he told the familiar Oz tale from the perspective of the witches. In “Pippin,” he told of the legend of Charlemagne’s son. “Godspell” was a new take on the Gospels of Matthew and Luke. “Children of Eden” was originally written in 1986 and called “Family Tree.” It was based on the Book of Genesis. The production was later developed as a Royal Shakespeare Company workshop, directed by John Caird, who wrote the book. Stephen Schwartz adapted the script and turned it into a fulllength musical called “Children of Eden.” Now, Stephen Schwartz has returned to the show and has turned it into a one-act musical. A pilot production of the new show will take place Nov. 13-15 at StarStruck Theatre as the Academy Stars, ages 12-17, present the show with Schwartz and Caird in the audience. “It’s an unbelievable exciting situation,” said Jennifer Jones, StarStuck’s artistic director. “Stephen Schwartz wants to see if it’s viable as a one-act show. With the pilot production, they’ll be making changes and they wanted

to see a trustworthy theater group put it up on its feet to be sure that they’re happy with the changes.” Jones noted that she and her husband, Peter Jones, StarStruck’s president, have gone through this pilot process before. The process makes sure that the show is ready to become a published work that can be licensed to other groups. “The show maintains the integrity of the original two-act show,” Jennifer Jones said. “The characters are exactly the same. We start with Adam and Eve and go through the story of Cain and Abel until you get to Noah. The person that plays Adam plays Noah, Eve plays Noah’s wife, Cain plays Japheth. Actors play multiple roles because Stephen Schwartz wanted to show the line from son to son to son. “The essence of the show is showing the growth of humans, and the relationship between parents and children. We hold on so tightly and at a certain time, we have to let them go live their lives. It’s painful for the child and for the parents to let go.” The cast includes Aaron Simons as Father, Jack Maloney as Adam/ Noah, Becca Suskauer as Eve/ Mama, Daniel Rabinowitz as Cain/ Japheth, Michael Stern as Abel/ Ham, River Hassett as Seth/Shem, Emma Geissmar as Aphra, Bliss

ST. LUCIE WEST — Cornerstone Bistro 2 in the Veranda Falls Plaza is a rare oasis amid the ganglia of franchises that have invaded St. Lucie County. You might not know it’s there. You might think it’s just another chain. The name is unassuming. The facade announces itself mutely from behind a dazzling, idyllic pool. Unless you knew that something extraordinary was happening within its cozy, regal interior, you might pass it over for one of its tired franchised neighbors. That would be a mistake. When the first Cornerstone in Tradition’s Village Center was bought out in 2008, Wayne Huizenga invited Mark Zollo, chef-owner of the bistro, to create a sequel. The result is an establishment that combines visionary innovation with a casual, sophisticated atmosphere, adaptable menu, and an honesty that can be rare for

Zollo (or Chef Z. as his friends call him) is on a first-name basis with several Californian vintners and is continually updating the selection of over 50 wines, ranging from light-bodied Pinot Grigios to heavier Cabernets. It is this sort of curation and accessibility that one quickly learns to expect from Cornerstone. A piquant Sauvignon Blanc from Chile served well to whet my appetite. Our server, Angela, who was not only extremely knowledgeable but also exceptionally personable and genuine, immediately set my guest and I at ease. She recommended the popular Tuna Stack and Escargot for starters. She is one of the many veteran servers who have returned year after year for Cornerstone’s season, which begins in October and extends through June (5 p.m. — 9 p.m.,

If you’re one of the many who are grossed out by gastropods, this could be an edifying experience: The snails are so soft and tender; they are almost indistinguishable from the mushrooms. economy of delight; its flavors are as well-balanced as its architecture. Towering nearly six inches high, it is a stratified universe of luscious cream cheese and avocado, crisp fresh cucumber, and buoyant wakame seaweed salad, crested with pickled ginger, and expertly mediated by the most succulent of raw ahi tuna. It is served with a mild wasabi cream sauce and a soy sauce reduction, as well as a plate of thin plantain 22621

From 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. every day (except for Sunday), the bar and waterfall patio offer a $2 drink bargain on domestic beers, house wines, and well drinks. Surely once St. Lucie-ites catch wind of this amazing sunset special, the bar will be a buzzing with social activity. Beginning in January, the bistro will host a series of wine-pairings that will combine three flights with three courses. Zollo says they also are planning a beer-tasting to coincide with a 5-course meal. To my right was the entire kitchen, laid bare behind a transparent wall. Much like in a Japanese Teppanyaki grill, it was entertaining to watch all of the meals being prepared from start to finish with remarkable efficiency, flair, and the periodic conflagration. This window into the machine does so much more, however, than merely entertain. It is a gesture of humility and a guarantee of professionalism. This sense of honesty and the bistro’s adaptability are two of its more prominent aspects. It is no secret that many chefs have colossal egos and will send anyone packing who seeks to alter or sub-

stitute menu items. The ideology at Cornerstone couldn’t be more opposite. They appreciate that everyone has their own taste, and are also particularly sensitive to dietary restrictions and allergies. “It’s your meal, and you should have it the way you want it” seems to be their principle. In keeping with this slogan, the bistro is introducing a new section to their menu this season: a create-your-own-fish feature. Patrons are invited to choose from a divine array of seven local and exotic fish, seven different preparations, and seven different sauces to create their own personal permutation of poisson. My guest opted for the Chilean Sea-Bass, grilled, with Tiger Paw sauce, a creamy lemon butter sauce with minced sundried tomatoes and artichoke hearts. I figured I’d also take advantage of the menu’s malleability. So with the help of the ever-accommodating Angela, I came up with an entree not on the menu. We combined their veal rib chop with a penne ala vodka that normally comes with lobster, shrimp, and scallops. My tastebuds were rewarded with a truly delicious specimen of moist, well-tempered beef. The chop was lightly brushed with a Madeira wine and lingonberry glaze. “I like to let the protein

STUART – The songs of Rodgers and Hammerstein are a few of my favorite things. A song like “I Cain’t Say No,” from “Oklahoma” will make you laugh. “It’s a nice mixture of duets, solos and intertwined pieces for medleys. It will be lovely. There will be patter, or dialogue, but it’s quite simple. The songs speak for themselves.”

KANE from page 30 two seasons ago,” Keelor said. “They’re some of the most familiar composers of our time. Their songs are recognizable and they’re well-loved. The Kane has not done a show based on Rodgers and Hammerstein, so we thought we would use it.” Keelor met Moniz when they worked on a Rodgers and Hart show at Palm Beach Dramaworks. Moniz is the winner of the 2015 American Prize in Voice-Chicago Music Theatre Award. He has performed with the Opera Company of Middlebury, the Sarasota Opera and the Gulfshore Opera. “We worked so well together,” she said. He’s a gorgeous, wonderful singer. Justin was my first thought for the show.” Keelor said they will perform solos, duets and medleys from “South Pacific,” “Oklahoma,” The King and I,” “Cinderella,” and “The Sound of Music.” “It’s a nice mixture of duets, solos and intertwined pieces for medleys,” Keelor said. “It will be lovely. There will be patter, or dialogue, but it’s quite simple. The songs speak for themselves.” The two will be accompanied on the piano by Eric Alford. “He’s fabulous,” Keelor said.

Photo courtesy of the Kane Center Singer Shelley Keelor will join with Justin John Moniz Nov. 15 for a show at the Kane Center featuring the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein. “He’s one of the top pianists in south Florida and he travels to New York to play in traveling shows.” For Keelor, the show is about singing beautiful music. “They’re known as the greatest writing partners of the 20th century,” she said. “It was known as the Golden Age and these were some of the most successful musicals of all time. Richard Rodgers

Shelley Keelor knew how to write a love song.” Up next at the Kane Cabaret is local favorite Lorrianna Colozzo, who presents “Life is a Christmas Cabaret” Dec. 13. The Kane Center Cabaret, 900 S.E. Salerno Road, Stuart, presents “People Will Say We’re in Love: The Music of Rodgers and Hammerstein,” Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $20.
