PALM CITY — Former County Commissioner Ed Ciampi is running for the District 5 seat again. “Yes, I will be filing this Friday morning,” he told Your Voice News & Views. Ciampi added, “I’m running because I feel there is more work to be done. I have a unique perspective of being a commissioner for four years and having been in the private sector for three.” Ciampi said expect to see a lot of “1MC” this campaign. The logo standing for, “One Martin County.” The county’s political divide is usually cast as a battle between “pro-growth” versus “slowgrowth” by some, and “smartgrowth” versus “no-growth” by others. Ciampi said after leaving the commission in 2012 to run for Clerk of Court, which he lost, he’s spent a lot of time analyzing the divide and realized that the gulf between political camps in Martin is much narrower than many realize. “We are spending too much time, too much energy, good people on both sides having a battle of wills,” he said.

MARTIN COUNTY — Many talented educators were acknowledged for their dedication to their craft on Nov. 13. One teacher was named from elementary, one from middle school and one from high

school. Overall Martin County School District’s Teacher of the Year is Jamie Herd-Tesson. Education is a family affair in the Herd-Tesson’s household. Her mother taught at Martin County High School for almost four decades and Jamie got her first teaching job at the school shortly after graduating from the Universi-

ty of Florida. Heck, her only teaching job. She’s been teaching at the high school for 12 years. In other words, the district’s Teacher of the Year for 2015 is a homegrown Tiger through-andthrough. “I love my job,” Herd-Tesson said

Martin Commission nods to a utility franchise fee STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — There’s gold in them there power bills. At least, there could be upward to about $9 million a year for Martin if the County Commission goes forward with inking an up to 30-year contract with Florida Power & Light promising to stay out of the power business. Florida Power & Light would, in turn, add anywhere from .05 to 6 percent to customers’ power bills and hand it to the county. “Certainly there are benefits to the county,” Commissioner Ed Fielding, Stuart, said at the Nov. 10 regular meeting. The commission gave a 3-2 nod to staff to move forward with crafting an ordinance creating the utility franchise with FP&L. It won’t prohibit other companies from competing with FP&L in the future, just the county. Additionally, the county will agree to give the power company access to some of its right of ways.

YO U A R E

In return, FP&L will collect a utility franchise fee from its customers and hand it to the county. The commission is on a quest to plug a $260-millioin maintenance backlog that’s growing about $15 million a year. Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, said the franchise fee is not nearly enough to plug the backlog, but it’s a good and important start to help keep the county from going into a revenue freefall. “With deteriorating roads, properties lose value,” he said at the meeting. When properties lose value, the county and other taxing bodies lose revenue. “I’m very much in favor of moving this forward,” Haddox said. In an unusual split, Commissioner Doug Smith, Jensen Beach, and Sarah Heard, Port Salerno, joined in dissent. Commissioner Anne Scott joined Fielding and Haddox in nodding to the staff bringing back an ordinance. Heard cited two concerns: the ability of low-income residents to pay the fee, and an abiding distrust of Tallahassee.

D LY I N V I T E CORDIAL

ENCORE’ TO STYLE

She worried that the State Legislature might change the rules of the utility-franchise game in FP&L’s favor. “Where is our ability to have recourse if new regulations are passed that are not anticipated in this (contract)?” she said at the meeting. “Where’s the protection for Martin County?” Smith said the fee would be a tax increase coming on the heels of the commission recently raising the county’s property-tax rates. “However you want to brand this, however you want to label it, to our residents it’s an increase,” he said. In a previous interview, Haddox said the proposed franchise fee seems to be the least painful way to raise needed revenue. He estimated that his power bill would climb only about $6 a month. Haddox said that the franchise fee is small enough that it wouldn’t break budgets, or significantly curtail consumer spending. Additionally, he said many could offset the new fee by reducing power use with relatively simple and painless behavioral modifications.

Palm City resident flying high to the United Way PALM CITY — Elisabeth Glynn has helped fly the Stuart Air Show to two of its most successful runs. Now the United Way of Martin County has tapped her to pilot a new position at the notfor-profit, director of resource management. “She is an exceptional young leader and I think she’ll do very well,” Jim Vojcsik, CEO, said. “I think it was a good fit, what we were looking for and her experience and skill set.” Glynn moved to Palm City with her husband, Jim Glynn, two years ago. They have two children, James, 4, and Mari, 2. The Baltimore native studied psychology and communications at Loyola University, New Orleans. That’s where she met Jim. “I’ve always been with various non-profits,” Glynn said. The couple had a long-distance relationship that spanned four years as they built careers. Eventually, he landed in Pompano Beach and the two married. “We were there for a while,” Glynn said. “We had a fun time.” Glynn worked for the Ann Storck Center with children and adults with developmental disabilities. Then she went to work for Gilda’s Club South Florida, which helps cancer victims and their families.

The couple had family members move to Palm City, and they were starting into parenting, too. “We were familiar with the area from Thanksgivings and Christmases,” Glynn said. They decided Palm City was where they’d like to raise their children. After moving to the area, Glynn stopped by the United Way in Stuart. Vojcsik said everyone was immediately impressed by her, but there were no positions open. Glynn made her way to the Stuart Air Show. Although she had no aviation background, the air show folks thought she could help it recover after the 2013 nose dive. That year federal budget sequestration pulled military jets and teams from the air-show circuit. Many air shows cancelled. Stuart didn’t, but its paid attendance was very low, only in the 30,000s. If 2014 wasn’t a big success, there would be a question mark over 2015. Glynn had a big job with a lot of people’s hopes riding on her. The 2014 Stuart Air Show was a hit, and 2015 even better. In addition to having military back in 2014 with an F-22 Raptor and AV-8B Harrier, the air show under Glynn added more children’s activities. In 2015, the U.S. Army

Commissioner’s freshman term Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

PALM CITY — John Haddox has announced a reelection bid. His reelection will largely depend on what voters make of his record, what others throw their hats into the ring. At press time, the only person who’s announced a candidacy for the District 5 Commission seat is former Commissioner Ed Ciampi. In some regards, Haddox aims to be a unifying figure who’s straddled political divides. However, in a county where compromise is rejected by some Haddox has also been a dividing character for that same reason. The freshman commissioner filled the 5th District seat when Ciampi stepped down to run for the Clerk of Court. Haddox faced off in a generally amicable race against the much younger Brandon Tucker in the 2012 universal primary for the seat. Haddox was generally counted among the “New Commission Majority,” which included fellow freshman Anne Scott, Hobe

John Haddox Sound. Scott and Haddox were generally seen as a 2012 voter revolution favoring a return to a more stringent Martin County Comprehensive Growth Management Plan, generally called the Comp Plan. The pair joined the commission’s so-called slowgrowth bloc, Sarah Heard, Port Salerno, and Ed Fielding, Stuart. Both recently opposed his election as the commission’s vice chairman.

Shortly after being seated as a commissioner, Haddox joined the New Commission Majority in voting to disband the Community Redevelopment Agency that administered the county’s seven community redevelopment areas. That legally shifted the commission into the role of the agency. Additionally, he voted to disband the existing Neighborhood Advisory Committees that made project recommendations to the agency, which presented them to the commission for approval. The advisory committees and agency worked with a portion of property taxes paid in the

redevelopment areas to fund various projects in them with the commission’s blessing. Palm City’s area runs along Mapp Road between Martin Downs and All American boulevards, with a western extension on Martin Highway to Berry Avenue. Its primary goal was creation of the Mapp Road Town Center Design, a New Urbanism plan to transform Mapp between Martin Downs and Martin Highway into a downtown-like, pedestrian-friendly area. Haddox has become one of the Community Redevelopment Agency’s strong supporters. He told Your Voice News & Views that he should have slowed down before voting to disband the Community Redevelopment Agency in 2012. By early 2013, Haddox was leading a charge on the commission to revive the advisory committees. The new Old Palm City Neighborhood Advisory Committee started meeting in November that year. Critics of the commission’s New Majority have long said the aim

overall Martin County deficit and an increase in local jobs. When I met John Haddox not long ago as a regular citizen, as are we all, he appeared on the fence about the building of Costco. He did mention the great economic boom it would be to our county. That lead me to believe that he wanted to be a Palm City Costco shopper. He might even lead the way with the ribbon cutting ceremony. At the Nov. 4 town hall meeting with John Haddox, I spoke in front of the crowd just before the meeting started, and stated how the overwhelming majority does not mind having Costco in Palm City, but it CAN NOT go on the proposed site at High Meadows and CR 714. The crowd is in favor of the giant warehouse retailer and its 18 gas pumps out west of 95 on CR 714 (Martin Highway). If this is what the people of Palm City want why is there only one site available. I spoke with Heidi, who is a Costco community representative, and she stated to me, “If the residents of Palm City do not want Costco, we will find another site.” She went on to say, “Costco is in the business of working with local communities.” With that

said here is the direct email from Haddox’s office on 11/16: “Thank you for attending the Town Hall Meeting on Nov. 4, 2015. I appreciate your input. At the meeting it was requested that I meet with Costco to ask that they consider different locations. I have met with senior Costco representatives and discussed alternate sites. Although it was a cordial meeting, they remain committed to their currently selected site. I informed the Costco representatives that I would hold their feet to the fire regarding each and every requirement of our Comprehensive Plan and Land Development Regulations. I look forward to future discussions on this matter. If you have any additional issues, please bring them to my attention. John Haddox, Commissioner, District 5.” Is this how Costco works with local communities by telling our county commissioner, “My way or the highway!” The next statement from our local representative should be, “hit the highway!” Is there some closed door activities

McIntyre participated in the first four Turkey Trots as a volunteer, but this year she will run in the race. “I had never volunteered for a race or run before the Turkey Trot,” McIntyre said. “Seeing everyone so enthusiastic so early in the morning like that is really a great thing.” Since 2011, the Turkey Trot has raised more than $50,000 for House of Hope, according to Tomasik. “Each $1 provides the equivalent

HADDOX from page 6 of its backers is eliminating the community redevelopment areas and agency. In recent months, Heard, Fielding and, to a lesser extent, Scott have stated or signaled wishes to reduce redevelopment area sizes and fundamentally change the agency’s role. Haddox strengthened his calls to keep the CRA in the redevelopment business and start completing proposed projects, such as initial work on the Mapp Road Town Center Design that the commission nixed in a 3-2 vote earlier this year.

Customs facility Talk about creating a U.S. Customs and Boarder Enforcement facility at Witham Field, Martin County Airport had been around for years. Generally, folks who count themselves as “slow growth” opposed it, including the most vocal backers of the Commission Majority. When the talk was becoming commission agenda items Haddox expressed concerns about the county’s general fund having to cover operational shortfalls if they happened. Haddox worked with Martin County Marine and Aviation Alliance for about a year to get it to pony up dollars to assure the county that it would help pay for any shortfalls. The alli-

ance promised the county up to $50,000 a year for the first three years of operation if there were shortfalls. The commission accepted the deal in a 3-2 vote. But then in another 3-2 vote, it nixed accepting bids to construct the proposed facility. After the customs facility crashed, Haddox told Your Voice News & Views, “That was a real bummer.”

Business Development Board of Martin County During the election, Tucker proposed that the Business Development Board of Martin County, BDB, be weaned from the county’s general fund toward private funding. After the election, the Commission Majority was poised to kill it outright. Haddox, became a pivotal architect of essentially the deal his opponent proposed. A 2009 contract started the BDB at $625,000 a year. By 2013 it was up $643,000. But in early 2013, in a 3-2 vote, the commission suspended contractual payments to the board, and started a prickly renegotiation. Haddox opposed the payment suspensions. By December that year the county and board inked a new contract worth $430,000 the first year. That was to drop to $340,000 in the second and $260,000 in the third years.

Crew. “If some of us on the commission row in one direction and others another, we do residents a disservice,” he said. The former commissioner said that sharply split commissions hamstring county staff by giving them mixed policy to navigate. That wastes resources, he said. “They need to have a unified clear direction of what they’re doing,” Ciampi said. He said that, if elected, he’ll seek to first promote projects on which commissioners are most unified. Ciampi said he recognizes that showing a willingness to listen will have to start with him if elected. “I’m not running to be controversial,” he said. “If I’m going to be a big believer in the 1MC initiative, I have to lead by example. I’m not looking to reinvent the (Martin County Comprehensive Growth Management Plan) or be controversial. I want to work on quality-of-life issues that are not controversial.” Ciampi said divides go beyond the County Commission, which is a frequent scene of 3-2 votes. He said the county has frequent-

Ciampi said his work in marketing for a Palm City industrial manufacturer has given him an unusual opportunity to travel around the country and world to see how communities address common issues, such as infrastructure maintenance. That, he said, has given him ideas of how Martin County can do better. Construction of Sailfish Splash Water Park, in Stuart, is among Ciampi’s proudest accomplish-

It expired while Ciampi was in office between 2008 and 2012. Ciampi said he saw in 2010 one of the biggest issues facing the county today while it was much smaller: its $260 million infrastructure backlog. In 2010, Ciampi said, he advocated asking voters to keep the then current local-option sales tax and apply it to infrastructure, but it was rejected. The commission sent voters a referendum in 2014 for a proposed 1 cent local-option sales tax. It failed by a thin margin. Among other credits, Ciampi is the president of Hammock Creek’s homeowners association and held numerous positions in parent-teacher associations at Palm City Elementary, Hidden Oaks Middle and Martin County High schools. At the 2014 Martin County Economic Summit Ciampi said, “What Martin County is best at exporting is our talented young people.” In the recent interview, he said that’s something the County Commission has a mission to remedy. TEACHER from page 1

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Julie Anne Carreiro of Hidden Oaks Middle School, Melissa Fischer-Rasmussen of Port Salerno Elementary School and Jamie Herd-Tesson of Martin County High School were chosen as the three Elementary, Middle and High School teachers of the year in 2015.

in a phone interview after receiving the honor at a banquet on Friday, Nov. 13. “I know there is no doubt in my mind the reason I was put on this earth was to teach.” Herd-Tesson teaches advanced-placement mathematics. She lives in Stuart with her husband, Michael Tesson, and their 3-year-old. Her tip to younger teachers — “Be honest with your students,” she said. “It’s OK to let them know that you care about them.” She said much about teaching goes back to applying the Golden Rule. “If you really show them that you

care about them and want them to learn things, they will,” Herd-Tesson said. Of course, teachers are the third most important figure in a child’s education. Parents are the second. “Talk to your students,” Herd-Tesson said. “Every night at that dinner table, ask, ‘Tell me one positive thing that happened today.” Always start with a positive.” She added, “That communication is a key element to student success.” Additionally, Herd-Tesson said parents need to make certain their children know that they can rely on them through though school times. The most important person to

a child’s education is…well, the child. As the playwright and poet Sir Walter Scott said, “All men who have turned out worth anything have had the chief hand in their own education.” Herd-Tesson had a few words for students. “Don’t give up,” she said. “Ask for help. If you need it, ask for it. Go to your teacher; go to your guidance counselor.” She said students need to know that difficulty grasping a subject doesn’t speak to their character or intelligence. “We all have weaknesses,” she said. Herd-Tesson added, “Teachers are here because we truly love our jobs and want to help.”

The Business Accelerator Program was established to have further economic development, job creation, business sustainability, human development and improve Martin County’s quality of life. The other business to receive a Business Accelerator grant this year was Castronovo’s Chocolates in Stuart. Those grants followed quickly on the heels of OrgHunter and Castronovo’s being presented the Martin County’s 2015 Small Business Award for entrepreneurial spirit and contributions to Martin County’s economy. OrgHunter’s application program interface (API) is making it easy for charities and nonprofits to take advantage of all the benefits of new technology and the big social changes that come with them. Powerful and popular tools and trends like social media, crowdfunding and the mobile lifestyle can now be used by even the smallest charity or 3rd-party developer to greatly accelerate the fundraising process. “OrgHunter is dedicated to finding innovative ways to help donors discover, volunteer, donate and engage in charity like never before,” Annase said. “Our goal is to set the standard for providing donors the ability to search for appropriate charities using innovative techniques such as Charity Attributes.” Conventional charity online search tools greatly lack in their ability to present donors with a wide range of charities that may match their interests. “Charity Attributes goes far beyond that by providing potential donors with a comprehensive list of attributes to help identify charities that fit a donor’s goals or philosophy,” Annase said. Local businesses get creative for Black Friday

“Because patient care should always come first”

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

PALM CITY - Holiday deals and steals seem to begin a little earlier each year. Weeks before Thanksgiving, Christmas trees can be spotted standing in store windows and commercials are already encouraging consumers to deck the halls. Even though big box stores like Walmart and Target have already launched holiday sales campaigns, they are still gearing up for what has become the largest shopping day of the year in the U.S., Black Friday. Black Friday is known for attracting large crowds to take advantage of “door buster” deals the day after Thanksgiving. This year, the shopping holiday falls on Nov. 27. Not to be outdone by their corporate competitors, local business owners are planning their own seasonal specials to tempt holi-

That app allows people to ask a celebrity a question after they make a donation to the celebrity’s designated charity. “This is a very innovative way for new donors to engage in philanthropy who otherwise might not get involved,” Annase said. “It also allows celebrities to support a cause that’s near and dear to them. It’s absolutely brilliant, celebrities sign in with Twitter and begin raising money for their cause within minutes.” OrgHunter plans to release a number of new partnerships and technologies in the near future that are dedicated to generating desperately needed donor dollars to charities throughout the United States.

The singer comes from San Remo and his big break came more than 15 years ago, in Italy, when he had the opportunity to open for one of his idols, Andrea Bocelli. The experience convinced Corso to come to the United States and bring the music of his homeland to Americans. Corso will perform “My Italian Christmas” at the Lyric Theatre Dec. 5 for two shows. The Lyric favorite, who began singing in his church choir as a boy, has performed at the Eissey Theatre at Palm Beach State College, at the Maltz Jupiter Theatre and on tours to New York and the West Coast. Corso spoke recently about his upcoming concert. “It will be a collection of the classic Italian-American Christmas songs with a twist,” he said. “There will be new arrangements and different versions of the classic songs, like ‘O, Holy Night,’

‘Silent Night,’ and ‘Jingle Bells.’ They will be performed half in Italian and half in English.” Corso, who will appear with his three-piece band, loves the sounds of Christmas. “Christmas is my favorite holiday,” he said. “It reminds me of when I was a little kid, back in Italy. We celebrated Christmas Eve with family and friends and had dinner after Midnight Mass. I remember sitting all together at the table for an Italian Christmas, eating specialties, cakes and homemade food.” Santa or Pappo Natale, came down the chimney in Italy as he does in the United States. “I stayed up all night on the 24th, trying to catch him,” Corso said. “In the end, I always fell asleep. My mother was good enough to put the presents out when I fell asleep at 4 or 5 a.m. They were there when I woke up.” The upcoming concert is about more than the songs. “It’s a tribute to the best holiday of the year,” he said. “It’s storytelling about Christmas in Italy, sharing traditions and the lifestyle during Christmas. The Lyric will set up Christmas settings

On Feb. 18, he will perform a Valentine’s concert called, “That’s Amore.” “It will have the most romantic and passionate of love songs,” he said. “There will be songs from Dean Marin and Mario Lanza,

songs like ‘Unchained Melody’ and ‘Can’t Help Falling in Love.’ We’re going to bring passionate love to the Lyric one more time.” Franco Corso presents “My Italian Christmas” at the Lyric Theatre, 59 S.W. Flagler Ave., Stuart, Dec. 5 at 4 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $45. Call the box office at (772) 286-7827 or order online at www. lyrictheatre.com.

A hearth and home for all — Martin County Homeless Centers celebrate the Holidays Adam Laten Willson

FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

MARTIN COUNTY — On Nov. 24th, MISS Inc. of the Treasure Coast gets into the holiday spirit. This will be the 16th year they’ve hosted their Communal Thanksgiving Event at the Martin County Fairgrounds. Since 2010, MISS has operated Butterfly Gardens, a residential center for low income single women and children in Port Salerno. The free public event is envisioned as a communal feast where low income families and working class poor can enjoy Thanksgiving alongside the more than 70 volunteers who work the event, sponsors, disabled veterans, and local community members, in an egalitarian atmosphere free of judgment or expectation. “This is the one time of the year when we reach further into the community,” says Schonna Green, Executive Director of MISS. “This is the only place you can sit and have a meal with your family, give back at the same time, and interact with your neighbors. In our case, our neighbors are homeless, low

income, and working class poor.” The meal will begin at 4 p.m. with a benediction from Pastor Sylvia Taylor and extend into the night with festivities. In previous years, the meal was prepared by MISS Board Treasurer Delroy Henry and longtime volunteer Phillip Orenstein. This year Creative Catering will pick up the torch, with the assistance of Faith’s Cupcakes and Importico’s Bakery Cafe who has donated all the desserts for 10 years. Attendees can expect hours of live music and dancing, entertainment from the Boys and Girls Club, face painting and a bounce house for the children, and several raffled prizes. Last year’s raffle was such a popular success, with personal injury attorney Lauri J. Goldstein presiding, that the event’s planners have decided to bring it back. Stuart City Commisioner Eula Clarke is also expected to attend this year and offer a few poignant remarks. The Thanksgiving event, as well as a Christmas event held every year at Seacoast Bank in Stuart, are the two biggest public outings for the organization. During

day shoppers. Leslie Levy, owner of Style Encore in Stuart and Plato’s Closet locations in Stuart and Port St. Lucie, is gearing up for another year of one-of-a-kind Black Friday specials her customers have been known to line up for. “Starting November 1st, on our Instagram and Facebook pages, we started putting sneak peaks up of our amazing inventory that will be on the floor that morning,” Levy said. As of Nov. 16, Levy said she had 40 bins worth of name brand merchandise, much of it brand new with the tags still on, ready to make their debut on her resale-store floors. At Style Encore, recently awarded the No. 1 Style Encore location in the country, customers will find Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Fendi, and a slew of other high-end designer merchandise. Plato’s closet is geared toward a teen audience and will carry names like Kate Spade, Uggs, and Michael Kors. “Friday morning there is usually a very long line out the door,” Levy said. “It’s busy, but we have enough staff that we handle it beautifully. To get customers even more in the holiday spirit, Levy’s stores will run giveaways, play Christmas music in the background, and have holiday treats available for hungry shoppers. Terry Rieger of Diamonds by Terry in Stuart is giving her entire staff the week of Thanksgiving off, but that is not stopping her from running her own holiday specials when her doors open back up. “We give out a lot of cards around the holidays that are worth $21,” Rieger said. The discount card gets customers a free verbal appraisal and lunch at the adjoined Diamond Tea Room and Bistro. Rieger is also extending store hours to open on Saturdays and Mondays in December leading up to Christmas. “Any client who mentions Christ-

mas or Hanukah will receive a special discount,” Rieger said. In addition, 5 percent of every single sale will go to benefit a children’s charity. Locally, Rieger said donations will go to buy Christmas presents for abused children staying at Real Life Children’s Ranch in Okeechobee. For Chandra Williams, owner of Enchanted Florist and Gifts in Tradition, Nov. 27 marks an inventory turnover. “We probably send out 150 to 200 orders the week of Thanksgiving,” Williams said. The very next day, Williams shifts her focus to evergreens. “We’re getting our Christmas greens in on [Black Friday] fresh out of Colorado,” Williams said. Shoppers will be able to pick up evergreen centerpieces, custom-made table top Christmas trees, gourmet fruit and food baskets, and more. Even though none of Williams’ specials are exclusive to Black Friday, she expects a busy day due to shoppers slipping in and out of surrounding stores. “We have a $10 off coupon on the website right now,” Williams added. Traditional retail stores are not the only ones with a Black Friday strategy. LA Fitness will be offering zero enrollment fees, zero maintenance fees, and zero cancellation fees for new gym members who sign up on Black Friday. Getting ahead of next year’s health resolutions will cost new customers $70 to sign up. “It’s our biggest night of the year,” said manager Chad Ginter. Though many shoppers will be seeking out toys, clothes, electronics, and home goods to gift their loved ones this year, others may be looking for a way to escape all the hustle and bustle. “Time is ticking on holiday vacation specials,” said Linda Scorgie, owner of Vogue Vacations in St. Lucie West. “If you’re thinking about getting away after the holidays, check out Vogue Vacation for any last minute blow out deals we may be able to offer,” Scorgie said.

According to the National Retail Federation (NRF), Black Friday is not the only popular shopping day over Thanksgiving weekend. In 2014, 87 million people shopped on Black Friday, while 127 million people made online purchases on Cyber Monday, the Monday after Thanksgiving weekend. The Saturday after Thanksgiving is known as Small Business Saturday, focused on supporting locally owned brick and mortars. According to the NRF, 33 percent of holiday shoppers said they chose to shop on Small Business Saturday last year. In total, NRF forecasts holiday shopping (purchases made in No-

People have limited time and parents of young children and the elderly don’t want to get out of the car. We’re bringing customer service to a higher level.” The tax collector window is located at 3001 SW Martin Downs Blvd., Palm City.

TREASURE COAST — The pumpkins are turning into Christmas trees and it feels like November in South Florida. A big change compared to last year when this month started with 20 knot northeast winds and temps in the 40s. Mother Nature always keeps us guessing so your tactics have to be ever changing to be successful in this sport. The beach has yielded a great variety of catch for anglers focusing on fishing the high tide, the one in particular that gets everyone excited is the pompano. Beaches to the north around the power plant like Normandy, Herman’s Bay, and Walton Rocks have been very productive. Whiting, croaker, bluefish, snapper, and pompano have all been on the list. Fish bites have been killer as always — for those unfamiliar with it I suggest you give it a try. Bait anglers are using clams and sand fleas for the pompano and shrimp for the whiting and croaker. For those of you who like to walk the beach, a silver spoon will work great for some of the 20-pound jacks cruisin’ the outer edges of the bait schools. Simply cast, retrieve and hold on. Look for these upcoming cool fronts to increase the population of pompano, bluefish and mackerel as well. The night time is the right time for snook at the bridges — with the extending warm weather these fish are still very actively eating. Top water plugs have been most productive worked slowly across the shadow lines on the incoming tide. When the water temperatures decline the fish will move deeper in the water column and that’s when the jigs, diving plugs and large swim baits start to do damage. Always throw your baits up into the tide and work them back through the shadow line. There has still

been a good redfish bite going on for those fishing the west side of the river north of Walton Road. Look for that fishery to continue to improve as weather cools. Offshore the bottom bite continues to be the hot one, every kind of snapper being caught around the 8-mile reef including red snapper that are federally closed to harvest. If one is planning an offshore bottom trip make sure you know your fish laws. Dinner is not worth your boat. A few dolphin around the 150 feet mark with the bite are getting better every day, as well as a couple wahoo being caught in the early hour high speed trolling in 300 feet of water. Large wire rigged mullet and/ or ballyhoo trolled behind a lead; planer or downrigger will get you in the zone. The much anticipated Spanish mackerel run has not yet started but the first couple of cold fronts should bring a few fish our way. Everyone be safe out there. Snook Nook opened in 1982 as a family business. Freddie grew up in the business and fishing the Treasure Coast area. Regarding next week’s event, Green says, “We have a lot of volunteers who give their heart and soul for this organization. We couldn’t do anything without the community’s support. We are so thankful, and that’s why we return our thanks every year by putting together this Thanksgiving event.” According to a recent Out of

I’m writing to voice my opinion regarding the proposed Costco at 714 and High Meadows Ave. As a 25 year full time resident of Palm City and Martin County tax payer, I feel that I have a strong voice in this matter. The proposed location is the WRONG location for a big box store like Costco. Our small neighborhood and roads cannot withstand the huge onslaught of traffic that this store will bring. Not only customers who will drive from other counties, but also delivery trucks. Palm City is a small bedroom community that does not need this type of store

in their neighborhood. Students from our middle school (which is located directly on Martin Highway) bike and walk to and from school using the intersection where this store is planned. Also, our community businesses will be very negatively impacted by Costco. Is that fair to our neighbors and friends who do business here? I support our local stores and family businesses. They are the back bone of the town I love. I have watched Palm City grow for the last 25 years. It is a family community. Let’s leave our peaceful haven intact! Thank you for printing my letter. Reach report by the National Low Income Housing Coalition (NLIHC), the average housing wage for a two-bedroom apartment in Martin County is $18.06 per hour, $10 more than Florida Minimum Wage. In other words, since Florida Minimum Wage is $8.05 per hour, renters on average need to work 90 hours or two full-time jobs at minimum wage to afford a two-bedroom apartment in Martin County. “I don’t like to utilize the word homeless,” Green said, “because that’s not what we’re looking at. We’re really looking at the working class poor, who cannot afford sustainable housing... and they’re our families, friends, coworkers, and fellow citizens. Our goal is to uplift the entire community.” The event will begin at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 24, at the Martin County Fairgrounds. For more information on how to support the effort, please visit www.missinc. org or call (772) 781-4063.
