MARTIN COUNTY — Florida’s a really big and diverse state. Leon County doesn’t look much like Monroe. Many of the 67 counties’ concerns are, likewise, way different. So, members of the Florida Association of Counties agreeing to name the Indian River Lagoon as a top statewide concern is — well: “That’s huge for us, as far as I’m concerned,” Martin County Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, said. Probably helps to have the immediate past president of the association, Doug Smith, on the county commission. Smith represents Jensen Beach and surrounding area. He’s also a member of the association’s executive committee. At the last regular commission meeting — Tuesday, Nov. 19 — Smith announced that that association released its annual legislative program, and it mentioned specific measures for protecting the Indian River Lagoon. “The fact that the Florida Association of Counties adopted (the lagoon) as a top priority is a really great thing,” Smith said

PALM CITY — Mapp Road might get more than a cosmetic facelift when renovation gets going, possibly sometime in 2014. Kevin Freeman, Martin County’s community development director, told the recently revived Old Palm City Neighborhood Advisory Committee that there are developing plans for an innovative street-scape design that’ll maintain storm-water runoff while increasing parking, bicycling and pedestrian space along Mapp. That was at the first of the committee’s revived meetings, Monday, Nov. 18. “I think this is a revolutionary way of doing things,” Freeman said at the meeting. At the core of a developing design is ditching Mapp’s swales, the shallow gullies running alongside the road to rid it of storm water. If the proposed design is built, the land-gobbling swales would be replaced with gravel-filled chambers topped by landscaping, pervious concrete for sidewalks, or porous asphalt for on-street parking. “We didn’t think we would be able to do this,” Freeman said. “It’s an engineering miracle.” In a phone interview after the

meeting, he said there’s still work to do to get the proposed design up to required engineering specifications. “It’s never been done in this county, but it’s been accepted by engineers and water-management districts as a way it could be done,” Freeman said. If the proposed design is built, storm water would penetrated surfaces into the underground chambers, rather than running into swales. The gravel would slow the water’s ride with gravity toward the St. Lucie River to allow sediments time to filter out. Additionally, much of the water would penetrate the ground instead of heading toward the river. “It allows you to use the entire width of the right of way for sidewalks, landscaping and on-street parking,” Freeman said. The Palm City redevelopment area has about $1.1 million dollars available for projects. Freeman said that it’ll likely have about another $200,000 by 2014. Additionally, he said the county is getting about $250,000 from the Florida Department of Transportation, FDOT, for constructing bicycling areas along Mapp, which can be on or off

ROBOTS from page A1 storms EV3s. And they’re helping fourth and fifth graders learn about math, computer programming and teamwork. “I know what 60 degrees is now, because (Dingobot) has to turn that much in one of the missions,” Citrus Grove Elementary fifth grader Travis Holmes said. Travis is in the school’s new robotics team, RoboRattlers. The school’s mascot is a diamondback rattlesnake nicknamed Dingo. Hence “RoboRattlers” and “Dingobot.” The Education Foundation of Martin County funded the robotics teams. They’re open to up to 10 students in the extended day programs at each of the county’s 12 elementary school. The students are preparing for a robotics competition that’ll be at South Fork High School on Dec. 14. The tournament theme is “Nature’s Fury.” Citrus Grove mentor Alexis Gibson said students have to program their robots to do tasks related to responding to natural disasters. “The (obstacle tables) are the same; the missions are the same,” she said. “Whoever can get their robot to score the most points by completing these missions will win.” Stacey Jones, the tournament director, said while mission tasks are similar, how each team

She said the teams will be judged on a number of items, including collaboration. OK, that’s all adult world thinking. Riley Regalado, a fourth grader at Palm City Elementary, has a whole other take on the robotics team and upcoming competition. “I thought it would be fun building Lego robots, and I always wanted to be in a competition,” she said. “I think it’s just for fun.” Maybe that’s what she thinks, Palm City mentor Alex Schulman, said. But Riley and her teammates are learning. “Teamwork is a very big thing,” Schulman said. “Whether they know it or not, their ability to work in teams is improving.” Schulman is a bit of a robotics-education expert. The Palm City Elementary alum was in S.P.A.M. Robotics. S.P.A.M. stand for Speed, Power and Maneuverability. S.P.A.M. is FIRST Robotics Competition Team 180. FIRST means For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. Team 180 is made up of Martin County high schoolers. The Palm City Elementary team gave itself an unpredictable name: the Robo-staches. Students didn’t adopt the school’s mascot, the wildcat, but rather went with a play on the word “moustache.” Team members haven’t settled on a name for the

As part of his work in the dual-enrollment program, Forman was required to serve an internship, called a Capstone Project. He worked for the City of Stuart. By the second day, he knew what his project would be. “When you walk into City Hall, there is a dilapidated directory with lettering. If something changes, the letters have to be scraped. It’s unprofessional. I’ve been working with Kevin Edwards, director of information services, on a five-screen digital information kiosk. Aside from its sleek, modern appearance, it will have two computers built in to display current events, a directory and meetings. It can be updated in a matter of minutes, instead of weeks. It’s not installed yet, but we’re working to install it.” Forman has another project, the Computer Phoenix Project,

It’s so great to get donated computers and donate them.” Forman is again working with Brett Lear at the Martin County Library System to have a computer donation program and a list of people who need computers. For Alex Forman, technology’s future and his own are limitless. “Technology is on every facet of our lives,” he said. “I love that and want to be a part of it. Martin poised to drop Seven50 Patrick McCallister Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — The county commission seems poised to join a small exodus of cities and counties from the Southeast Florida Regional Partnership and its end product, the Seven50 Southeast Florida Prosperity Plan. The partnership and its report are together commonly called “Seven50.” At its last regular meeting — Tuesday, Nov. 19 — John Haddox, Palm City, requested that the Martin commission discuss and vote on whether to remain in Seven50. “Seven50 has come up two or three times,” Haddox said. “Commissioner (Anne Scott) has asked for a workshop, and I have asked for that.” The commission took an unscheduled vote on Haddox’s request to place Seven50 on a future agenda, approving it 4 to 1. Commission Doug Smith, Jen-

sen Beach, dissented. At press time, the commission has not yet scheduled Seven50 for an agenda. In a phone interview after the meeting, Smith said that discussing and voting on Seven50 now is simply a waste of the commission’s time. “The work is done,” he said. “The draft report is out. Regardless of whether we get out or not, the report is done.” Smith was on the county commission when it approved a memorandum of understanding supporting efforts by the Treasure Coast and South Florida regional planning councils to apply for a $4.25 million grant from the Departments of Housing and Urban Development’s Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant Program. That grant was to fund the Southeast Florida partnership to develop the report. The partnership released its draft report on Oct. 11. It’s taking additional comments on the nearly 300-page document at its

website, seven50.org, until Saturday, Nov. 30. Michael Busha, executive director the Treasure Coast Regional Planning Council and a member of the partnership’s executive committee, said the final draft should be released by late December. The partnership will run out of federal grant funding early next year and likely dissolve, he said. “There’s nothing to vote on,” Busha said in a phone interview after the St. Lucie County Commission voted to withdraw from Seven50 on Nov. 7. “The partnership has not and never will ask anyone to approve, accept or implement the recommendations of the report.” Supporters say the partnership was always intended to be temporary, that it gathered valuable information and public comments for writing a report, and now South Florida governments have a tool to better coordinate plan-

said he will be receiving intensive inpatient treatment in Florida for a longstanding alcohol and drug addiction. An apologetic Radel said his team will take over his responsibilities in his absence. Radel, who said he has no plans to resign, will presumably crusade on for clean water once he has recovered. “I hope like family, Southwest Florida can forgive me for this. I’ve let them down, but I do believe in faith, forgiveness and redemption and I hope to come out of this a stronger man, a better man for all of you,” Radel said during a press conference held in Southwest Florida on Nov. 20. In a written statement released the day before his court appearance, Radel, who is married with a toddler son, said he hopes to one day restore his position as a role model. “This unfortunate event does have a positive side. It offers me an opportunity to seek treatment and counseling,” Radel said. “I know I have a problem and will do whatever is necessary to overcome it, hopefully setting an example for others struggling with this disease. Please keep my family in your prayers.” Earlier this year, Radel voted in favor of the final version of the House-passed farm bill that included a measure to allow states to drug test food stamp recipients. Court documents reveal an investigation into Radel’s drug activity began in the fall after authorities were notified by “confidential sources and informants.” On several occasions, Radel purchased, possessed and used cocaine, a statement of offense states. “The agents learned that the defendant would purchase cocaine for his personal use and also, on occasion, share it with others,” documents state. Radel was arrested on Oct. 29 in Washington, D.C., after he agreed to purchase 3.5 grams of cocaine for $250 from an undercover officer who was accompanied by

an acquaintance of Radel. Radel agreed to purchase the drugs in the undercover officer’s car outside of a Washington restaurant. Had he been arrested and charged in Florida where cocaine possession is a third degree felony, Radel would have faced a potential five-year prison sentence, a $5,000 fine and lost his right to vote. “After the undercover police officer and the defendant completed this transaction and got out of the undercover police officer’s vehicle, federal agents approached the defendant,” court documents state. “The defendant dropped the cocaine to the street, where it was recovered by the agents.” During an interview with federal agents at his Washington apartment that night, Radel admitted to the purchase and surrendered a vial of cocaine he had in his residence, documents state. Radel’s arrest and sentencing comes on the heels of an Oct. 3 congressional briefing he co-hosted with Murphy on the Lake Okeechobee discharge-ravaged Indian River Lagoon. The meeting was attended by more than 20 members of Congress, including U.S. House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. Radel and Murphy also co-authored a letter to President Barack Obama, inviting the president to tour the deteriorating waterways on both of Florida’s coasts. Murphy spokeswoman, Erin Moffet Hale, said the congressman hasn’t spoken to Radel regarding the issue. “This is a matter for Congressman Radel, his family and the courts,” she said. Before taking office last year, Radel, a freshman member of Congress, worked as a television anchor and talk show host. He also founded the nonprofit organization, U.S. Forces Fund, which aides wounded soldiers and veterans. Radel represents Florida’s 19th congressional district, a coastal area of Southwest Florida including Fort Myers, Naples, Cape Coral, Bonita Springs and Marco Island.

in a telephone interview after the meeting. “Martin is 149,000 people. We’re not one of the big counties to the south. We’re not Orlando. We’re not Tampa.” Over the summer of 2014, the lagoon garnered much attention across the state and even nation. Numerous problems were happening simultaneously: sea grasses were dying, along with oysters and marine mammals. Health departments were advising people not to touch waters. Most seemed to agree that the unusual problems were linked to large water releases from Lake Okeechobee into the C-44 Canal. That water flowed into the St. Lucie River, and then to the Indian River Lagoon. The lagoon reaches from Martin northward to Volusia counties. The counties association is now lending its support to a longstanding Martin County wish list: additional state funding for creating more water storage and treatment areas to reduce nutrients flowing into Lake O and the lagoon. Additionally, the association is supporting added funding to complete Everglades restoration, which would reduce the future need for the Army Corps of Engineers to release water in the C-44.

When the Florida Legislature convenes for its 60-day session in March, it’ll consider the report and recommendations made by the Florida Senate Select Committee on Indian River Lagoon and Lake Okeechobee Basin. And the attached $220 million price tag. It comes at a time when Speaker of the House Will Weatherford, Wesley Chapel, is backing Gov. Rick Scott’s proposal to cut the state budget by $100 million as part of a plan to reduce taxes by about $500 million. The committee’s report recommends, among other things, elevating portions of the Tamianmi Trail, State Road 90, to allow for more southern flow of water to reduce the need for Lake Okeechobee discharges into eastern and western canals. Additionally, the committee recommended expanding funding for reservoirs to reduce sediments and nutrients before water heads to the St. Lucie and Indian rivers. Smith said that he’s confident that the counties association backing the recommendations will help sway legislators to adopt them even if other state programs and projects are getting cut. “Something beneficial will happen in the session for the Indian River Lagoon, South,” he said.

Employment numbers bring holiday cheer Patrick McCallister Staff writer

pmccallister@YourVoiceWeekly.com

TREASURE COAST — Many Floridians were probably giving thanks for new jobs during Thanksgiving. Santa brought the Sunshine State an early Christmas present — an employment rate matching what existed before a sharp economic slide the nation and world hit in September 2008. The state’s October unemployment rate was the lowest since August 2008 — 6.7 percent, seasonally adjusted. On Friday, Nov. 22, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity released its state employment report for October. The department was unable to produce an employment report the previous month, because of the 18-day federal government shutdown. “The state’s October rate was the lowest since August 2008 when it was also 6.7 percent,” the report reads. And only one county had double digit unemployment: Hendry. St. Lucie had the third highest unemployment rate among the state’s 67 counties, 8.8 percent, not-seasonally adjusted. The county has about 128,000 workers. The national unemployment rate in October was 7.3 percent, seasonally adjusted. Florida has been below the national average for eight straight months. Odaly Victorio, communications coordinator for Workforce Solutions of the Treasure Coast, said

Florida and the Treasure Coast has had a steadily improving employment picture over three years, and things might be speeding up toward healthy employment rates. “The trend is continuing at almost 2 percent improvement (ever month) over the year before,” she said. “That’s been the case pretty steadily over the year.” While St. Lucie had one of the Florida’s highest unemployment rates, Martin was below the state average. Its not-seasonally adjusted rate was 6.9 percent. The county has about 66,000 workers. Monroe had the best employment picture in October. Its unemployment rate was at 3.8 percent, not seasonally adjusted. Together St. Lucie and Martin form the Port St. Lucie Metropolitan Statistical Area. It had the third highest unemployment rate among the state’s 23 MSAs and metropolitan divisions at 8.1 percent, not seasonally adjusted. The unemployment rate is calculated using a variety of methods. Among them are telephone interviews with workers. Those that report not having jobs and looking for employment in the previous 30 days are counted as unemployed. Discouraged workers — those who are able to work and want jobs, but have not sought employment in the previous 30 days — are not counted in the unemployment figure. Many

SEVEN50 from page A7 ning efforts for decades to come. Many opponents say the federal grant that funded the partnership was a Trojan horse for setting up an unelected body to swipe away local control over zoning and land-use regulations. Haddox said that while the federal grant that funded the partnership is nearly spent, he believes that among its final acts will be to request more grants from the federal government to fund implementation of Seven50 proposals. He said if Martin doesn’t vote to withdraw from Seven50 now it could find itself trapped in implementing the report’s proposals later. “I don’t think it’s done,” he said in a phone interview after the recent meeting. “For that reason, I have finally gotten it on the agenda for a vote on it.” The “Seven” in Seven50 is for seven counties, Broward, Indian River, Martin, Miami-Dade, Monroe, Palm Beach and St. Lucie counties. The “50” is for 50 years. St. Lucie joined Indian River County, along with Vero Beach and Indian River Shores, in approving motions to withdraw from Seven50. St. Lucie commissioner Tod

YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • PALM CITY & TESORO • NOVEMBER 29, 2013 • A15 Mowery, District 2, said despite some critics’ claims that Seven50 could create a federally funded regional planning body that can force local governments to revise their zoning and land-use rules, it is simply a report with recommendations that cities and counties can use or ignore. However, Mowery voted to reject Seven50 to signal dissatisfaction with the report and its recommendations. “Now, technically by pulling out, we’re showing we’re not in favor of the plan as presented,” he said in a precious telephone interview. Martin commissioner Ed Fielding, Stuart, is on the partnership’s executive committee. In previous interviews he, too, has said there’s no reason to take a vote on Seven50. However, he seconded Haddox’s motion to agenda a vote on Seven50 for purposes of discussion. Fellow commissioner Sarah Heard, Port Salerno, said at a previous commission meeting that while she voted to approve the 2010 memorandum of understanding that helped launch Seven50, she’s now leery of it. “When this was first proposed, I was in favor of participating,” she told fellow commissioners. She later added, “When the time is right, I am very comfortable opting out of Seven50.”

HCG has not been demonstrated to be effective adjunctive therapy in the treatment of obesity. Lauren traveled to Miami every weekend for six weeks practicing and perfecting her talk. Balseiro said the lass’ maturity was quickly evident. “From Day 1, (Lauren) knew what she wanted to talk about,” Balseiro said. “She knew exactly how she wanted to talk about it.” About 900 attended the Miami event, and another 1,000 or so watched its life stream. Among other credits, Lauren was a page for Sen. Joe Negron, a Republican. However, she’s working closely with Rep. Patrick Murphy and Sen. Lauren said advocating for safer school lunches has taught her that individuals can make positive changes. TED — Technology, Entertainment, Design — is an annual series of lively short lectures based on the concept of “Ideas worth sharing.” It started with a 1984 conference that took on an unexpected life. Among those who’ve given TED Talks are former President Bill Clinton, primatologist Jane Goodall, human-potential researcher and developer Anthony Robbins and theoretical physicist Brian Greene. The not-for-profit Sapling Foundation facilitates the TED franchises. “I’m a big fan of TED talks,” Lauren said. “I was on TEDtalks. org, and I was looking to see if there were any I could attend. I saw one in Miami called TED Youth. I said, ‘Hmm, I could apply (to present), and I did.’” Arvi Balseiro, TEDxYouth@ Miami founder and curator, said Lauren was a quick standout from the about 40 who applied to

MAPP from page A4 street, in 2016. Freeman said that he’s also seeking grants for the proposed roadway improvements. “We think it’s an imaginative project that will attract some grant aid,” he said. The proposed roadside improvements would be between Martin Downs Boulevard and Martin Highway. Separate work is slated to four-lane the latter roadway to start between spring and summer of 2014, said Betsy Jeffers, design project manager at FDOT. It’ll continue in portions until at least 2017. Freeman said the Mapp project would likely be done in pieces, because it could cost around $3 million, or more. “It can be designed for parts to be built out later when funding occurs,” he said. “Once you set out the skeleton of this, you can add modules in place. The beauty is, you don’t have to engineer every piece (individually). That’s been done. It’s like putting together a Lego set.” John Haddox, Martin commissioner, said he believes the proposed design for Mapp Road could greatly improve to its commercial opportunities. “I absolutely think it will make it more viable,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the project getting started, completed. I’m confident we’ll see new businesses.” The neighborhood advisory committee is part of the county’s Community Redevelopment Agency, which administers seven Community Redevelopment areas. Both and together the agencies and areas are commonly called CRAs. Martin County’s seven redevelopment areas are in Old Palm

City, Golden Gate, Port Salerno, Jensen Beach, Hobe Sound, Indiantown, and Rio. In all, the county has about 8,600 acres of redevelopment areas. Palm City’s redevelopment area, adopted in 2002, includes 610 acres. The area is nestled along Mapp Road from S.W. Rio Vista Way south to S.W. All American Boulevard. It goes from the St. Lucie River South Fork west to a few blocks past Mapp. There’s a western extension nestled along S.W. 34th and S.W. 36th streets to S.W. Berry Avenue. Freeman said improvements to Mapp Road have long been among the top priorities for Palm City’s CRA. Community Redevelopment Areas are special zones that keep some property-tax dollars to fund projects to spur economic development for eliminating blight. In a CRA, county taxes paid on property values higher than what they were the base year – when the area was established – stay in that district for economic development and blight elimination. Neighborhood advisory committees suggest and evaluate project proposals. The Community Redevelopment Agency, in this case the county commission, must approve them. In some counties and cities, commissions and councils serve as the redevelopment agencies, and in others the bodies are separated – usually with some overlap in membership. Not all CRAs have neighborhood advisory committees. The Florida Legislature created CRAs with the Community Redevelopment Act in 1969. The next neighborhood advisory committee meeting is scheduled for February. A special meeting can be called sooner.

back home to Palm City. “I looked around at graduate programs and the University of Florida was a great opportunity, with a campus in Fort Pierce,” she said. “I was able to take classes online and at the Fort Pierce campus and continue to work at a software company in Palm City. That enabled me to maintain my financial integrity. I have no loans.” Krueger was also the recipient of a Martin County Master Gardeners Scholarship Award. She recently received her Master of Sconce degree in Environmental Horticulture. As part of her degree, she worked with Professor Sandra Wilson on a research project to assess the performance of 12 low maintenance, ornamental grasses in Fort Pierce. The research center is one of 15 locations in the United States evaluating the grasses. The grasses studied could be used in home landscapes, at botanic gardens and along parking lot borders and median strips. They are useful for erosion control, add aesthetic interest and grow well in all kinds of soil. “The grasses were native to all over the United States,” Krueger said. “Only two were native to Florida. It was part of a national trial to see how grasses grow in

parts of the country. They they’ll be able to determine where to market them, where they’ll be successful. Also part of the trial was how grasses seed and propagate. If the ground is covered with seeds, they might be invasive.” Krueger said that ornamental grasses such as native switchgrass and little bluestem have several benefits. “Ornamental grasses provide visual interest,” Krueger said. “Switchgrasses are a beautiful red in fall and bring movement when the wind catches them. The bluestems are a beautiful silvery color and flowers bring up the height.” Krueger’s heart is in urban gardening. She is looking for her first job in Boston, where she hopes to work on green roofs and living walls. “Rooftop gardens use minimal grasses to provide a layer of insulation that cuts energy costs and reduces water runoff,” Krueger said. “It filters pollutants and ‘greens’ the city by using space otherwise unused. It’s a healthier urban environment utilizing space that’s been passed over. “Living walls are vertical, often modular pieces attached to a wall. The plants are natural filters and help with water runoff.” Krueger said the field of urban landscaping has become a popu-

JOBS from page A13 call this “shadow unemployment,” and it’s inherently difficult to track due to variations for why people don’t seek jobs. Victorio said there’s evidence that there are fewer discouraged, or vacating, workers than before. “Our (four-county regional) labor force in Oct. 2013 was 277,320,” she said in an emailed response to queries. “Some have argued the unemployment rate has improved only because people have either given up, retired or moved away. In August’s report, the labor force was 276,460. This was a (historic) peak prior to this latest report. The next highest labor force was in December 2010 when it was 273,768. We haven’t been losing workers.” Victorio said as employment numbers

lar one and there is a lot of competition for jobs. “Greening urban environments is a hot industry,” she said. “A lot of people who are graduating with that degree are looking at the same things. One of the companies I’ve applied for does indoor arrangements for corporate centers. The plants are tropical, the plants that we plant outside. The plant lists (in Boston) are significantly similar to a landscape center in south Florida. What they plant inside, we plant outside.” Is the Florida native concerned about the cold weather in Boston? Krueger said that she’d visited family in Buffalo and Boston, so she knew what the cold was like. “It’s nothing a good coat, pants, gloves, hat, boots and sweaters (can’t handle,)” she said.

improve, there’s anecdotal evidence that more workers are getting better wage and benefit offers from potential or current employers. She said many job seekers relax their efforts in December. “Now is not the time to take a break from your job search,” Victorio said. “It’s a time of the year that people tend to be, ‘Well, I haven’t found a job; I’ll start again in January.’ There’s a certain thought out there that nobody is hiring; everybody is taking vacations.” Wrong, she said. Industries that especially need workers in December are thriving on the Treasure Coast. “Retail trade has been (a strong industry) for us over the year,” Victorio said. “We had a 10.5 (percent) job increase, or 2,800 jobs. The next highest improvement for an industry is 6.1, and that would be leisure and hospitality.”

IRS PROBLEMS? DELINQUENT TAX FILINGS? WE CAN HELP Here is one reason to hire us: A new client recently came to us and hired us to file for tax years 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011. The client anticipated owing about $50,000. We prepared the delinquent tax returns and it turned out the client owed just a little over half that amount, including penalties and interest. By paying just few hundred dollars to get the unpaid liability to under $25,000 the client was able to qualify for the IRS Streamline Installment Agreement. Now the client is making monthly payments, is caught up with tax filings and sleeps at night!

Keep in mind, the longer you wait to file those old tax returns, the more penalty and interest you are going to pay. More importantly you want to file those delinquent tax returns before the Criminal Investigation Division comes knocking on your door looking for them.

Patient Appreciation Days at Loving Chiropractic & Wellness Center were celebrated starting on Veterans Day and continued throughout the week with complimentary adjustments, goodies, prize drawings, and lots of nonperishable food items collected for House of Hope’s Thanksgiving food pantry. The office was decorated in patriotic red, white and blue and the American Flag was flying in honor of our nation’s veterans. Patients and guests were delighted with the delicious treats, and were very generous with their donations to House of Hope’s food collection bins, which filled up quickly. According to Dr. Loving and team, the week was a great

success; and planning for next year’s Patient Appreciation Days will certainly include a collection of food items for House of Hope’s pantry. Palm City’s Shelly Goodwin revels as the Martin County High School’s Bowling Tigresses prove their mettle with a Baker 300. The ladies did the amazing feat at the Florida High School Athletic Association’s state finals earlier this month at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando.

BOWLING from page A9 all hit a hole in one on the same hole,” Thomas Baral said. Baral is the coach of the girls bowling team. The ladies did the amazing feat at the Florida High School Athletic Association’s state finals earlier this month at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando. Palm City’s Shelly Goodwin had to toss the final frames that decided whether they girls would bowl a great game, or a history-making one. By then, everything else in the building had stopped, and all eyes were on her. No pressure. “The first ball, I was extremely nervous,” the 17-year-old said. “It was all on me. I have to do this now.” The senior plays 15-pound, Storm balls. “The last two shots, I wasn’t nervous at all,” Shelly said. “My adrenalin kicked in so much, it took over all my nerves.” But there was that last throw — the deciding moment. The senior said it felt as though everything had gone into slow motion until she saw the last of the pins go down, taking history with it. Baral, too, said time seemed to freeze. “It’s the first (Baker 300) in Florida for boys or girls,” he said. “It’s harder to do than a state championship.” Despite the amazing accomplishment the girls garnered second place for the state’s ‘13-‘14 season. Still, they brought home an

accomplishment that the United States Bowling Congress will record into perpetuity. Shelly? Well, she’s checking a handful of colleges. One way or another, she plans to bowl her way through higher education, and maybe go pro after that. Fellow Palm City lass Kassidy Daniels, 16, also aims to bowl collegiately. The junior goes for 14-pound Storm and Roto Grip bowling balls. Kassidy, too, hopes to bowl professionally. “There’s not as much money as there is in other sports, but you can make a living at it,” she said. Like Shelly, Palm City’s Christina Perez prefers 15-pound bowling balls. She goes for Brunswick. The 17-year-old senior took up bowling when she was 10. Unlike Shelly and Kassidy, Christina is less confident she’ll have an opportunity to bowl collegiately, or professionally. But, she’s certain of one thing. Romantic partners had better like bowling. “Depending on where I am, I’m sure I’ll find an ally and join a league,” she said. Baral has coached the Martin Tigresses for nine years. He said all of his players have made him proud. But, there’s such a thing as dream teams. The season might be done, but Martin High has a girls bowling dream team under its roof until graduation. “I honestly don’t believe you’ll find a team like these girls for some time,” Baral said.

Three tenors bring New York to Martin County Staff writer

STUART – What’s better than one outstanding tenor? That would be a trio of them. The Lyric Theatre is bringing three New York favorites, Daniel Rodriguez, Andy Cooney and Michael Amante on stage Dec. 13 as part of the Nostalgia Series, The three call themselves the New York Tenors and their program, “Memories of Herald Square,” promises to bring “a little bit of the Big Apple to Florida.” Daniel Rodriguez became familiar to Americans after Sept. 11. He was the New York City police officer whose voice was heard again and again at funerals in the days following the terrorist attacks. He later studied with famed opera star Placido Domingo and retired from the police force in 2004 to pursue a musical career. Michael Amante, who has been called “The People’s Tenor, appeared in the show, “Oliver” when he was 6. He is classically trained, but combines popular rock and gospel music to make musical accessible to everyone.

The New York Times called Andy Cooney “Irish America’s Favorite Son.” The native of Long Island has performed twice to sold out audiences at Carnegie Hall and he runs a Cruise of Irish Stars that attracts more than 1,000 to hear the music of Ireland. Cooney spoke recently about the New York Tenors and what they have in store for Lyric audiences. He said that it was his idea to put the group together. “There are a lot of great tenors, and I thought that in the greatest city in the world, we had something to contribute.” There was a Latino, an Italian and an Irishman, three great groups in New York. I called the other two boys and said, ‘What do you think?’ We got together and got on great. We had a few laughs. It’s been so well-received.” Cooney said the au-

PALM CITY — When we all do a little, no one person has to do a lot. Whether it’s recycling to reduce waste that ends up in the landfill or picking up litter left behind on a beach, together the residents of Martin County make this community a better place to live, work and play. But some residents go the extra mile to make it more beautiful for everyone and Keep Martin Beautiful wants to know about it. Making the conscious effort to care about the environment is an important part of our daily lives and for this reason, Keep Martin Beautiful developed a program to recognize and reward members of the community that turn its mission into a reality through outstanding efforts to prevent and reduce litter, promote recycling, and revitalize and beautify communities in Martin County. Keep Martin Beautiful hosts its annual Environmental Stewardship Awards as a way to honor these contributions from Martin County’s ‘green’ leaders. KMB is currently seeking nominations for individuals, businesses, civic and nonprofit groups, and government agencies in Martin County. Each year there are many dif-

Go Vegan! FOR YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS

The Treasure Coast chapter of Slow Food has organized a “Go Vegan in 2014!” presentation on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 3 to 4:30 pm at Shadowood Farm in Palm City. The presentation will be of interest to anyone who is vegan curious and looking to embrace a diet free of animal products in 2014 — and beyond. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, choices to become vegan «center around taking better care of the earth›s resources and the environment, ethical issues about animal care, the use of antibiotics and growth stimulants for the production of animals, the threat of animal-borne diseases, and the health advantages of a plant-based diet.» Jennifer Sacket, a local food artisan, vegan mentor, and educator, will teach attendees to prepare four easy vegan recipes at home: Cashew “cheese” on dehydrated crackers, raw carrot “muffins,” raw zucchini noodles with cashew cream “cheese”, and a green salad with sprouts

Due to the generosity of Dmitry Mishelevich, owner and operator of Victory Auto Group, LLC, the holiday just got a lot brighter for Project LIFT. Mishelevich, a regular donor for LIFT, “Wanted to do something that would have more impact this year.” Rather than giving cash, like he usually does, Mishelevich decided to donate a pristine 2000 Harley Davidson, Fat Boy that has only 17,000 miles. This bike runs perfectly and sports a lot of chrome and extras that bikers will appreciate. Project LIFT will sell only 200 raffle tickets at $100 each. Tickets can be obtained by contacting Mat Churchey at (772) 215-7192, matchurchey@yahoo.com or Bob Zaccheo (772) 359-2554, bobzaccheo@yahoo.com.

LIFT from page B16 Project LIFT is fortunate to have the assistance of the Junior League of Martin County, the Project LIFT board members and the Project LIFT Resource and Development Committee with this holiday fundraiser. The winning ticket will be drawn on Dec. 24, at noon — just in time to make a super amazing gift! Project LIFT is committed to creating independent, competent and productive citizens of the community. Project L.I.F.T. (Life Initiatives for Teens) is an organization with a primary investment in the lives of “at-risk youth.” By introducing

skills that will inspire youth to explore opportunities to be successful outside of delinquent behavior, Project LIFT will challenge youth both physically and mentally while they interact with positive mentors. Members of Project LIFT will engage in developing life, employment, and behavioral skills. They will learn how to manage their anger, attitude and/or emotions, including depression, anxiety, impulse issues and substance abuse, while also receiving employment training in areas such as auto repair, tiling, plumbing, auto body, and general carpentry. More than 85% of Project Lift participants maintain sobriety and make healthy life choices.

MARTIN COUNTY — Thousands of people navigated their way to the first Stuart Seafood Festival Nov. 16 and 17 at Memorial Park in Stuart that raised $2,500 to benefit the Rivers Coalition. The nautical extravaganza had crowds feasting on an array of fresh seafood while getting in a little shopping and rocking out to live musical entertainment. The children’s area really pulled out all the stops

with rides, a crafts area sponsored by Stuart Macaroni Kid and Kids Need More Art and other activities just for them. It was truly a weekend of family fun! With sunny skies and refreshing temperatures most of the day, patrons came out in masses on Saturday to get in on the festivities. The day’s live musical set kicked off with the sounds of Brett Duff Acoustic followed by The Samantha Russell Band, The Long

Guests toured the array of nautical vendors getting in a little holiday shopping while sipping and sampling, and the kids got to let loose crafting, riding the rides and more. Not wanting to miss out on any of the fun, patrons lined up outside festival gates early on Sunday ready to get the party started. The Killbillies got people in the mood for fun and feasting followed by Fresh Catch, and the Amber Leigh Band closed out the two-day extravaganza leaving guests hungering for more. In recent months, discharges from Lake Okeechobee have destroyed the St. Lucie River ecosystem negatively impacting the local
