MARTIN COUNTY — Florida’s a really big and diverse state. Leon County doesn’t look much like Monroe. Many of the 67 counties’ concerns are, likewise, way different. So, members of the Florida Association of Counties agreeing to name the Indian River Lagoon as a top statewide concern is — well: “That’s huge for us, as far as I’m concerned,” Martin County Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, said. Probably helps to have the immediate past president of the association, Doug Smith, on the county commission. Smith represents Jensen Beach and surrounding area. He’s also a member of the association’s executive committee. At the last regular commission meeting — Tuesday, Nov. 19 — Smith announced that that association released its annual legislative program, and it mentioned specific measures for protecting the Indian River Lagoon. “The fact that the Florida Association of Counties adopted (the lagoon) as a top priority is a really great thing,” Smith said
