Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Lauren Dender of Palm City performed with the Dance Academy of Stuart at the annual Artists for a Cause ‘Dance for Food’ performance at the Lyric Theatre Sunday, Nov. 3. The event benefits the Treasure Coast Food Bank and will be performed again Sunday, Nov. 17 at the Fort Pierce Magnet School of the Arts, Friday, Nov. 22 at South Fork High School to benefit Bill Brooks’ Food for Families and Sunday, Nov. 24 at the Eissey Campus Theatre in Palm Beach County to benefit the Farmworker Coordinating Council of Palm Beach County.

MARTIN COUNTY — The Stuart Air Show flew into uncertain skies, and landed good results, organizers say. “I understand our attendance was a little down on Saturday over other years,” Eric Ingraham, a member of the show’s marketing committee, said. “But Sunday was very, very good.” Stuart likely benefited from a dearth of air shows in Florida for the last few months. For example, the annual Wings Over Pen-

sacola Air Festival canceled just weeks ago leaving some acts scrambling for other venues. The Pensacola show was scheduled for Nov. 8 to 11. Ingraham said Stuart got Julie Clark Air Shows, because of the sudden pullout in the Panhandle. “She is probably one of the most graceful pilots out there,” he said. “She can take a T-34 to the max.” So, why an air-show drought? Put simply, the federal budget sequestration grounded the Air Force Thunderbirds and Navy

Your Timing Won’t Be Off

When You Invest Systematically If one of your worries is whether you’re investing at the right time, it shouldn’t be. By investing a set amount of money on a regular basis, you establish a simple routine that can help make your financial goals a reality. In addition, investing systematically can help:

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographer Aerobatic pilot Jeff Boerboon flies close to Air National Guard team pilot John Klatt while during practice maneuvers prior the start of the Stuart Air Show last weekend. was at Stuart this year. The mobile center is a multi-media promotion and recruitment tool that goes wherever crowds will be the largest. Stuart also had a Thunderbird jet displayed, but it didn’t fly during the show. Roberts said the annual show at the Martin County Airport Witham Field, 2001 S.E. Airport Road, is an important contributor to the local economy and quality of life. “First of all, it brings dollars to the community when we need them,” he said. Additionally, he said the show promotes the community. “I know several people who came to this air show (in previous years)

and have bought property here,” Roberts said. “It introduces people to the area.” Your Voice News & Views staff met attendees from as far north as Mount Dora, and south as far as West Palm Beach and Loxahatchee. Ingraham, too, said all of Martin County benefits from the annual airshow. “Does it directly benefit the people in Palm City?” he said. “In some respect it does, in some respects it doesn’t. But the trickledown affect benefits everybody in Martin County. That money trickles down all the way through the economy.”

• Make it possible to use market fluctuations to your advantage • Add potential growth and diversification to your portfolio • Keep your long-term financial goals in focus Investing a set amount of money on a regular basis does not ensure a profit and does not protect against loss in declining markets. Such a plan involves continual investment in securities regardless of fluctuating price levels of such securities. You should consider your financial ability to continue the purchases through periods of low price levels.

Blue Angels earlier this year. The annual Valiant Air Command Warbird Museum & TICO AirShow in Titusville, March 22 to 24, was the last performance of the Thunderbirds. The crack military demonstration teams are the air show rock stars. Without them, tickets just don’t usually sell nearly as well. A number of organizers shut down shows rather than go the 2013 season without the elite flight teams to draw ticket buyers. Locally the Cocoa Beach Air & Space Show canceled after it became clear the Thunderbirds wouldn’t shake its ground. The Pensacola show, too, canceled after the Naval Air Station Pensacola drastically scaled back plans for what’s normally the Blue Angels’ big homecoming show. Michael Roberts, board of directors member, said the Stuart Air Show had no problems attracting top civilian acts to keep folks entertained for four hours. “We had more than we had last year,” he said. “Each act flies for a certain number of minutes. A 15-minute act, a 20-minute act. We filled the box the whole time.” In the airshow business, the more time spectators spend without eye candy, the worse. The more acts it can keep in the air, the better. Additionally, the Stuart show had good showings of displays and vendors. Among other things, the Air Force Command Center Alpha

BRIDGE from page A1 the St. Lucie River’s South Fork and connects Martin Highway in Palm City to Kanner Highway and Indian Street in Stuart. The dedication ceremony will be on Saturday, Nov. 16. That date was picked about 10 months ago, when it seemed likely that the bridge would be ready to, or already be, open. Around that time Denti was projecting that the bridge would be opened to regular traffic by September. So, what’s taking so long? “That is (asked) everywhere you go,” Denti said. “It’s the magic question.” The answer is Florida’s famously fickle weather and an unusually wet summer in Martin County. “A weather day here and there,” Denti said. “It adds up.” The perfect day for gardening or doing some work on the house is not necessarily a good day for building a 3,100-foot bridge. Something as seemingly simple as pouring a spot of cement takes on titanic dimensions in bridge construction. A single deck — the surfaces cars travel over — on the bridge is 145 feet long, 115 feet wide. That’s 600 cubic yards of concrete, or 65 mixers’ worth. Bridge engineers work with complex formulas to account for

temperatures, humidity levels, and wind speeds, among other things, before doing certain work. Sort of like the old carpenters adage, “Measure twice, cut once.” Only on a scale counted in tons and decades. The bridge is a 100year design. If done correctly, the bridge shouldn’t need any major maintenance for 100 years. Denti said he knows that patience wears a bit thin when bridge openings get pushed back. He’s worked on five large bridges in Martin County, including the Palm City Bridge expansion that opened in 1990. “We’ve gone to seven-day mode,” he said. “It’s crunch time.” Beth Zsoka, public information officer, said at least one woman has attempted to cross the bridge. “It’s not safe,” Zsoka said. “We don’t recommend it.” Zsoka declined to say what happened during the incident. However, Veterans Memorial, what many call the Indian Street Bridge, is a construction site protected by state laws, Denti said in a previous interview. “We’ll have high security up there to make sure anybody who wants to be the first to cross won’t,” he said. “That would be

Among other festivities, folks will be able to walk on the bridge all they want to take in simultaneous car and boat parades. Dedication festivities will launch with a 5k run at about 7 a.m. MCM Timing and Results, Jensen Beach, is organizing the run. Zsoka said organizers expect about 300 runners. After the 5k, dignitaries such as county commissioners, State Representative Gayle Harrell and Congressman Patrick Murphy will ceremonially dedicate the bridge. After the dedication, crews will go back to work getting asphalt laid, the bridge painted, landscaping finished, and equipment moved. “We’re at the point that all the big excitement is over,” Denti said. Has it been a year already? H

ow about that. This week’s editions of Your Voice News & Views and Veteran Voice are our one-year anniversary editions. There really is some truth to the saying, “Time flies when you’re having fun ... and working your tail off.” Fifty-two weeks ago we published the first editions of our new direct-mailed, hyper-local community newspapers. After several months of planning, prepping, packaging, purchasing and persuading, it all came together. A few longtime associates, (and dear friends) and a few new faces came together to try to accomplish what a lot of people were telling us was a waste of time and money. Not too many people that were “in the know” thought we could pull it off, and we knew of a few other individuals out there that sure didn’t want us to, either. Never one to be dissuaded by naysayers, we knew that with the right team we could put together the right product that could be successful. In spite of all the talk about newspapers being a dying media and the death of print, we knew that if we brought it down to the hyper-local level we could inform and entertain the readers. So far, it would appear, so good. In my 30 years in the newspa-

Steve Erlanger per business we have been blessed to work and live in some of the most incredible places in the country. Southern California, Austin, Texas, Breckenridge, Colo., Central California, Pittsburg Pennsylvania and Florida, just to name a few. (We never want to leave Florida.) We have been a part of all kinds of newspapers from dailies, weeklies, bi-weeklies, start-ups, rebuilds, just about everything. Few, if any, have given us the satisfaction of what this team has produced. The positive feedback we get on a daily basis from readers and advertisers is incredible. That is what we, at Your Voice News, live for. We want to produce a newspaper that the readers find helpful, informative and pertinent. We want to produce

a newspaper that will introduce our advertising partners to their customers and drive these local business owners to success. We want to continue to support the local nonprofits and charities so that they can continue to do the things they need to do that makes the Treasure Coast a great place to live. Of all the communities we have lived in over the years, I can honestly say that the Treasure Coast is one of the most giving we have ever experienced. We love being a part of these communities. We love that you have taken our newspaper into your homes and into your lives. We will do more. We will be the publication you want and need us to be. We will continue to be your voice. Please let us know if there is something special going on that we need to share with all of your neighbors. Let us know if there is something that you think we

The story is told of a CEO who toured a warehouse of his corporation and he saw a young man who was propped against an I-beam, not doing anything. Each time the CEO looked in his direction, the young man didn’t move or make and attempt to be productive. Finally, the CEO couldn’t take it any longer and went up to the young man and asked, “Do you know who I am?” “Nope,” said the young man. “I’m the CEO of this company. How dare you just stand there not doing anything! How much money do you make a week?” “Four hundred dollars,” the young man said. The CEO screamed, “Here’s $500, take it and don’t ever let me see you around here again!”

PALM CITY — The new Old Palm City Neighborhood Advisory Committee will meet on Friday, Nov. 18, at 6 p.m. The meeting will be at the Palm City Community Center, 2701 S.W. Cornell Ave., at Charlie Leighton Park. “The first meeting is to organize themselves,” Keven Freeman, Martin County’s community redevelopment director, said. “It’s to get an update on the projects that are happening.” At its Feb. 26 regular meeting, the Martin County Board of Commissioners voted to start accepting applications for the volunteer committees it disbanded in December when it made changes to the county’s Community Redevel-

opment Agency, CRA. The neighborhood advisory committees served in an advisory role to the Community Redevelopment Agency until December. The county commission disbanded the agency and assumed its role administering Martin’s seven Community Redevelopment Areas. The neighborhood advisory committees will now report to the commission acting as the CRA. Community Redevelopment Areas are special zones that keep some property-tax dollars to fund projects to spur economic development for eliminating blight. In a CRA, county taxes paid on property values higher than what they were the base year – when the area was established – stay in that district for economic devel-

Why DreamMaker?

“Which department was that deadbeat with?” The manager replied, “He was the pizza delivery boy.” How many times have we in our leadership/boss positions jumped to conclusions, seen only what we want to believe and made decisions that really were not wise and made things worse than they were before? Not to be too stereotypical, but as a man and a manager, I feel it is my job to be in the middle of things, fixing them, but sometimes, the best fix may be to allow things to work out with time. Early on in my management career, I learned the hard way about this lesson. I would only hear one side of a story or a situation, not have all the facts and storm into the situation like a bull in a china shop. I would end up making myself look foolish, would make me lose credibility with my staff and would make a big mess that was most likely harder to get through than the original situation that was brought to my attention. How many things that we have to deal with in our day-to-day job really have to have us “in the middle” post-haste, right now, immediately involved? When problems and situations arise, we

can step back and look at things logically, consider all of the facts and come up with workable solutions that will be best for the business and all involved. I always have to remember that there are three sides to a two-person conflict. There is the truth, and the two perceptions of what happened. Sometimes, work conflicts have nothing to do with work and I convey to my employees that those conflicts need to be resolved between the employees. I will not get involved other than telling them that they do not have to like each other to work with each other, but they will respect each other and communicate civilly to accomplish their job. I have had two instances in the last 10 years where long-term employees have left employment due to not being able to resolve personal conflict and because I refused to take sides. It was not what I would have preferred to happen, but it was not wise for me to take sides in a non-work related personal disagreement. Working for physicians, we often can be directed through their second- or third-hand information that they hear from the medical assistants or nurses. Again, it is best to assure the

physician that we will deal with the problem, but we also have to let the physician know that the perceptions relayed to them may not be the actuality of the situation at all. How many times have we reacted to a physician’s perception of things without knowing the whole truth and seen that we can hurt feelings, react wrongly and destroy part of our leadership credibility? We all supposedly work with adults who are or should be trained professionals at their jobs. We need to remember when things go wrong that we can do our employees a disservice by jumping into conflict. We need to allow our employees to use their skill sets to

YOUR VOICE NEWS & VIEWS • PALM CITY & TESORO • NOVEMBER 8, 2013 • A13 attempt to resolve the problem. If we jump into everything, all the time, our employees can perceive that we don’t trust them or think that they have the abilities to come to resolution when they are faced with problems. Personal growth and learning cannot occur if we are in the middle of all of their problems. Also, we will find that our time will be spent refereeing instead of managing if we are expected to get involved in every little problem. Sometimes it is hard to see conflict or be told of problems and not get right in the middle of things, but we all need to remember to get the facts and trust our employees to use their skill sets to get through things. There are priorities and emergencies that will require us to react immediately, but the next

time conflict arises, don’t do something, sit there. opment and blight elimination. Neighborhood advisory committees suggest and evaluate project proposals. The Community Redevelopment Agency, in this case the county commission, must approve them. In some counties and cities, commissions and councils serve as the redevelopment agencies, and in others the bodies are separated – usually with some overlap in membership. Not all CRAs have neighborhood advisory committees. The Florida Legislature created CRAs with the Community Redevelopment Act in 1969. At the February meeting, Commissioner John Haddox, Palm City, said that as the county resumes the committees, the most important thing will be whether they can motivate broad discussions in the redevelopment areas. “Regardless of the makeup of the board, I would ask that your first priority be to get 50, 60 people to your meetings,” he said. “My goal is to include a much broader spectrum of the communities that make up the CRAs.” Martin County’s seven redevelopment areas are in Old Palm City, Golden Gate, Port Salerno, Jensen Beach, Hobe Sound, Indiantown, and Rio. In all, the county has about 8,600 acres of

redevelopment areas. Palm City’s redevelopment area, adopted in 2002, includes 610 acres, and has about $1.3 million available for projects, which can circumstantially be combined with grants and other county dollars. The area is nestled along Mapp Road from Southwest Rio Vista Way south to Southwest All American Boulevard. It goes from the St. Lucie River South Fork west to a few blocks past Mapp. There’s a western extension nestled along Southwest 34th and Southwest 36th streets to Southwest Berry Avenue. Freeman said improvements to Mapp Road are among the top priorities for Palm City’s CRA. He said the Florida Department of Transportation is slated to give the county $250,000 for adding bicycle lanes to Mapp in 2016. He said the county hopes to do multiple projects that year to reengineer and streetscape the mostly commercial stretch between Martin Downs Boulevard and Martin Highway. He said the considered improvements could have ecological benefits, too. Namely reducing the amount of untreated surface water that reaches the St. Lucie River. “We’re coming up with innovative ideas about how a roadway can take care of its own storm

The Martin County area is very charitable. They like to help their fellow man.” The shelter opened in 1989, with beds for six boys and six girls. While it has grown in size, the goal of providing a safe haven for children who have been removed from their homes has not changed. Children receive love, educational, medical and dental care and psychological counseling in a safe environment. If they are of school age, they go to school, and every effort is made to send then to the one they were attending. Mrs. Tilton said that the sad reality is that most are not able to return to their parents. “They usually go into foster care,” she said. “We recruit foster parents and get them license. If the case is very serious and the parents will sign away their custody, they can be up for adoption. In some cases, they do go back to parents, but only after we have educated them. In some cases, it’s kids having kids. We’ve had to turn away kids because we don’t have room. There’s not a whole lot of help available in Florida.” Mrs. Tilton said that decisions made elsewhere often effect children. “The population will go up or down depending on our politicians,” she said. “Sometimes the Department of Children and Fam-

ilies will decide to try to keep kids in their homes. When something dreadful happens, they send them back to Hibiscus. We do have some good advocates. (State Rep.) Gayle Harrell has been on board since the get-go. She always goes to bat for us and it’s very much appreciated. The problem facing Hibiscus and all organizations trying to help kids, is a lack of funding. “It all takes money,” Mrs. Tilton said. “I would love to see centers all over the state. That’s a big undertaking. You’d have to get people from all different areas interested. “ Support from the local community is not a problem. Mrs. Tilton mentioned the Covelli family, owners of Panera Bread, and Linda and Owen Schwanderer, founders of the Hibiscus Guild, as supporters, but said that there are countless others who volunteer time, make donations, work in the thrift shop or help in other ways. “We need to thank the community because that’s what keeps it going,” she said. People are so generous, once they see the kids at the shelter. They are loved and they do count. They regain confidence, which is what they have to do to survive.” For more information about Hibiscus Children’s Center, visit the website www.hibiscuschildrenscenter.org. or call (1-(800) 403-9311.

Honored for his exceptional leadership, talent for translating vision into action and strong record of accomplishments, Massey was previously named the Southern Regional CEO of the Year, which qualified him as one of five regional finalists for the national award. IRSC Board of Trustees members Werner Bols, chair, of Stuart, and Jose’ Conrado, of Vero Beach, were present at the ACCT Leadership Conference when the award was announced. “We couldn’t be more proud,” Bols said. “This recognition of Dr. Massey is exceptionally well-deserved.” “One of the hallmarks of Dr. Massey’s presidency is his intense commitment to community needs, building numerous collaborative partnerships at the local, state and national levels

In recognition of Dr. Massey’s dedication to excellence and world-class results, the IRSC Board whole-heartedly commends and congratulates him.” Massey was appointed IRSC’s third president and CEO in 1988, and his tenure in office has been marked by a legacy of exceptional accomplishments. Examples include: • Expanding enrollment by 300 percent in more than 130 degree and certificate programs. • Significantly expanding the College’s five campuses to include more than 700 acres and 1.5 million square feet of stateof-the-art educational facilities. • Leading the College’s transition from Indian River Community College to Indian River State College, expanding the College mission to become a Baccalaureate degree-granting institution, and establishing 23 new bachelor’s degree programs linked directly to regional workforce needs. • Achieving national rankings for IRSC as the 10th best college in the Southern Region by U.S. News & World Report and fourth most affordable college by the U.S. Department of Education. • Increasing Foundation assets by more than 900 percent and raising funds to support student scholarship awards of $3.3 mil-

Broadway musical recalls theater’s golden age Staff writer

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY – Take a large dose of musical comedy, add a touch of satire, throw in a Tony-winning score and stir with love. There you have “Drowsy Chaperone,” the Broadway show that is a love letter to the musical comedies of the 1920s. The show will have its regional premiere Nov. 15-17, when StarStruck Performing Arts Center’s Teen Stars present it at the StarStrucks’s Stuart theater. Jennifer Jones, the show’s director, said that the premise is really quite simple. “It is a New York guy sitting in his living room,” she said. “He puts on a favorite record album and it comes to life.” What comes to life is a musical set during Prohibition. The Man in the Chair, as he is known, provides commentary as gangsters, a boozy chaperone that gives the show its title, a dizzy flapper, a Latin lover, an aging hostess, an heiress, an oil tycoon and a cigar-smoking producer sing and dance their way through misunderstandings, lovers’ quarrels, cancelled weddings and failed seductions. “It’s hilarious beyond words,” Jones said. “The music is toe-tapping. It’s when the American musical genre really took off and

people came to the theater to have a good time and forget their worries. They left humming a tune and tapping their toes.” Jones said that most of the characters are a little, well, off. “The Drowsy Chaperone, played by Talia Suskauer, is drowsy because she always has a cocktail in her hand,” she said. “She’s supposed to be chaperoning (heiress) Janet Van De Graaf, played by Katie Rodgers. The Latin lover, Adolfo, is a ladies man and oh, gosh is he funny. He’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer.” Jones has her director’s cap on for that last comment because Adolfo is played by her son, Kevin Paul. She assured me she isn’t speaking as a mother. There is Kitty, a flapper, played by Andrea Colletti. “She’s a flapper and a chorus girl and she has an amazing dumb blonde chorus-girl accent,” Jones said. The cast also includes Spencer Ballantyne as the Man in the Chair; Jose Gomez as Robert Martin, the oil tycoon engaged to Janet Van De Graaf; Shoshana Simons as Mrs. Tottendale, the wealthy hostess; Jack Zuver as Underling, her loyal employee; Andrew Rodgers as Feldzeig, a Broadway producer; Noah Shull as George, the best man; Colleen Broome and Christina Reagan as gangsters disguised as pastry chefs; and Becca Suskauer as

“What I’m loving the most is watching my students become really strong character actors,” she said. “There are 13 lead roles. Everyone has a distinctive personality. The characters, the music and the dances are based on Busby Berkeley musicals. Doing this musical is teaching them about those. “You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. You can learn from people who came before and then ask what piece of yourself you put in it. The show itself was written because the guy who wrote it thought so highly of the musicals of yesteryear.” Jones said that the show is ideal for audiences of any age. “Families and young people will love it because it’s fast-paced,” she said. “Older people will have a blast. There are two insane tap and dance numbers and the vocals are top-notch. It’s a really, really strong cast.” Jones added that the show is hilarious, but it’s not a farce. “You believe in the actors and the problems and conflicts, but you’re laughing along because it’s so much fun.”

HUMANE SOCIETY

Pet of the week

Kindly look into my soulful eyes now please look into your heart. Inquisitive and affectionate best describes me, Pumpkin. I am a 4 year-old male Domestic Shorthaired darling. Not only am I sweet and so soft at 7 lbs., but full of romp and play.

Pumpkin

I wish each and everyday for that special someone to spend their loving time with me. Is that someone you? At 7 months-old, I am an affectionate Labrador Retriever mix. I came to the shelter with a birth defect in my right leg. I do not know life any differently. You’ll see I do walk with a limp. Not to worry, it does not slow me down as I enjoy having fun and playing fetch. I am a very special 30 lb. lad full of puppy love & heart-warming kisses.

CONTEST from page B8

www.YourVoiceWeekly.com

Tell Elite in 150 words or less why you need a new circuit panel. Email your entry to contact@EliteElectricAndAir.com or send it snail mail to:

your local and national electrical code to be in compliance and keep your family safe. According to the U.S. Fire Administration, home electrical problems account for 26,100 fires and $1 billion in property loss each year. In fact, about half of all residential electrical fires involve electrical wiring and December and January are typically the most dangerous months for electrical fires. If you have a malfunctioning circuit panel, it may simply need repair, but it’s typically impossible for an untrained eye to gauge the difference between a minor repair job and a complete overhaul. The electricians at Elite Electric & Air can diagnose potential risks and identify faulty panels that need replacing. With this in mind, Elite Electric & Air is inviting Treasure Coast homeowners to Surrender Your Circuit Panel for inspection and a chance to win a new one, valued at $2,000 (includes installation).

6938

Elite Electric & Air 1691 S.W. South Macedo Blvd. Port St. Lucie, FL 34984 •Include a photo of your circuit panel (optional) An Elite Electric & Air technician will select three finalists from submitted entries and inspect their circuit panels within their homes to determine a winner. Contestants will receive 10 percent off the purchase and installation of a new circuit panel, just for entering. Entries are due by 5 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 29. For more information, contact Elite Electric & Air at (772) 200-2326 or go to www.EliteElectricAndAir.com
