PALM CITY — Talked about since the mid-1960s, the Veterans Memorial Bridge is on the eve of opening to traffic. The dedication ceremony complete with speakers, a parade and ribbon cutting was on Nov. 16. Hundreds showed up for the gala. George Denti, project manager, said the actual opening to traffic will be an anticlimactic affair that’ll happen by Christmas. “A couple guys will go out there and move the barricades,” he said in a previous interview. A decade ago, the prediction was for the bridge to open in 2011 and carry 42,900 trips a day during its first year. Now the Florida Department of Transpor-

MARTIN COUNTY — Sheriff William Snyder figures he’ll swear in more than 100 new deputies next week. Then they’ll watch “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and “Frosty the Snowman” together. “I’ll be there swearing them in as junior deputies,” Snyder said. TREASURE COAST — As the Philippines death toll from super Typhoon Haiyan continues to rise in excess of 5,000, residents on the Treasure Coast with close ties to the Asian islands are also mobilizing in great numbers to help in relief efforts.

Port St. Lucie resident Daisy McGinnis, a Philippine native and president of the Philippine-American Association of the Treasure Coast, scrambled in the typhoon’s wake to organize a supply drive at the Port St. Lucie Community Center last week.
