MARTIN COUNTY — Sheriff William Snyder is a concerned about seeing guns falling into the wrong hands lately. “I know we’ve had over 40 guns stolen in the last six months,” he said. The county’s top cop added, “We’ve had them stolen from unlocked cars, locked cars and homes.” Snyder said he’s a big believer in gun rights. “With the Second Amendment rights, there comes responsibilities,” Snyder said The county has had no murders this year, and there’s no evidence any of the recently stolen firearms have been used in crimes. Nevertheless, Snyder said the more guns stay in the hands of law-abiding citizens the better. “My concern is a gun taken in a burglary presents significant danger to the community,” Snyder said in a previous interview. “It presents a danger to the public when they have to face the business end during a burglary.” Since taking office Snyder has promoted gun safety and

PALM CITY — It’s bigger and better. A Castle Christmas is back with the dancing light show that’ll put everyone in the holiday spirit. “I’m in a lot of (online) lighting forums,” David Castle said. “It’s

the largest one I know of between Orlando and Miami.” The annual light show has almost 80,000 lights this year. Last year Castle treated folks to a 64-channel light show. This year — oh, just get this. “This year I have 9,000 (channels),” Castle said. Meaning that about the only limitations he had for the four-song show were in his imagination.

Literally. Fortunately, Castle has quite an imagination. This year visitors will get treated to the Pentatonix rendering of “Mary Did You Know,” a contemporary version of “Angels We Have Heard on High,” along with a rock version of “O Holy Night. “That’s my favorite,” Castle said.

During Carden’s first three years of high school he attended Martin County High School and was active in JROTC under the guidance of the late Walter “Sarge” Jshombach. “I think Sarge would be very proud of me,” said Carden, 28, whose parents Gwen Carden and Donald Carden still live in Palm City, “He did a lot to help influence me and many others to do our best at whatever we attempt.” Carden, who earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from Florida State University in 2009, will be serving in Florida’s National Guard in a reserve capacity. After completing advanced training at Ft. REASURE COAST — Last Friday, I was honored to join other federal, state, and local officials to mark a major milestone in Everglades restoration efforts that will benefit our Treasure Coast waterways: the groundbreaking marking the start of construction of the reservoir component of the C-44 Reservoir and Stormwater Treatment Area (STA) project. With a storage capacity of 16 billion gallons, this 3,400-acre reservoir is the largest component of the C-44 Indian River Lagoon South project, which once completed will reduce harm to the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon by providing water storage and treatment areas. As a native Floridian, I have long known the importance of the environment to our community. That is why on day one in office, I made the fight to protect our waterways a priority. Rep. Murphy joined with federal, state, and local officials to mark the groundbreaking of the C-44 reservoir in Indiantown. Since that time, we have seen a lot of progress. Holiday season safety tips

I

am pleased to share with you that the overall crime rate in Martin County has been down this year. But even with this decrease, it is never a good idea to let your guard down, especially during the holiday shopping season. The downward crime trend shows that we are moving in a positive direction. Three years ago, pillowcase burglars were plaguing our citizens. It was clear from the beginning of my administration that we needed to address the issue quickly and with the intensity of a no-nonsense law enforcement approach. With the help of the public, media, combined efforts of our uniform road patrol deputies and specialized units, we exposed these traveling burglars and greatly reduced their crime streak in our county. Because of our collaborative efforts, dozens of pillowcase bur-

and ultimately received lengthy prison terms. We must all remain vigilant and watch out for each other. If you see a suspicious person or car in your neighborhood, please call 911. With the community’s involvement, we hope to continue reducing crime trends in Martin County. As we move into the holiday season, the following safety tips may appear quite basic, but following them will be your best defense in protecting your family and property. Please share these reminders with your family, friends, and neighbors. I wish you and your loved ones

the very best for a healthy, happy, and safe holiday season. 1. Shop with a friend and try to shop during the daylight hours. 2. Carry a minimum of cash, and pay with a check or credit card when possible. Carry only one credit card, and a minimal number of checks. 3. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry while holiday shopping. 4. If you drop packages off at your car to continue shopping, move your car to a different location. Always assume burglars are watching the parking lots. 5. Make sure you lock your car, and don’t leave valuables inside. 6. If you are leaving the store or mall at night, please make sure you have your keys in your hand so you don’t have to fumble looking for them when you get to your car.

Yes, Virginia... Editor’s note: “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” is from an editorial called “Is There a Santa Claus?” The editorial appeared in the September 21, 1897, edition of New York’s prominent paper at the time, The Sun, and has since become part of popular Christmas folklore in the United States.

Dear Editor— I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, “If you see it in The Sun, it’s so.” Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus? Virginia O’Hanlon 115 West Ninety Fifth Street

For our advertising partners we pledge to provide the most complete consultative and marketing programs possible for the best return on their investments.

“Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge. Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished. Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus

coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world. You tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding. No Santa Claus! Thank God! He lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.” The response to Virginia’s letter by the New York Sun’s editor, Francis Pharcellus Church, remains the most reprinted editorial ever to run in any newspaper in the English language and found itself the subject of books, a film and television series.

GUNS from page 1 security. In February Snyder hosted the first Martin County Sheriff’s Office Gun Lock & Safety Event with numerous local gun shops and related businesses participating. The event presentations were focused on gun-securing technologies. Palm City’s Robbie Abell — owner of Lotus Gunworks, 3558 N.W. Federal Highway, Jensen Beach — told Your Voice News & Views at the event that there have been tremendous advances and cost reductions in gun-securing technologies. Snyder said that guns should be stored in safes bolted to floors. “Anything less than that is probably not going to be adequate,” Snyder said.

Most home burglars are interested in getting in and out fast. They’re going for cash, jewelry and guns. “If they break into your house and they find a gun, it’s going with them,” Snyder said. In addition to keeping guns in safes, Snyder said owners should have photographs of the serial numbers, and, if possible, receipts of purchases. When driving with a firearm for any reason, Snyder said it’s best to have it in the trunk, preferably in some kind of lockbox with a quality trigger locks. The more work a burglar has to do for a prize, the less likely he is to go for it. According to the Department of Justice, about 230,000 guns are stolen annually. More than 80 percent remain missing six months after their thefts.

SAFETY from page 6 7. Be extra careful if you do carry a wallet or purse. They are the prime targets of criminals in crowded shopping areas. 8. Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. Thieves may try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings. 9. Keep a record of all of your credit card numbers in a safe place at home in case they are lost or stolen, so you have the information to give police and your credit card company. 10. Remember to be diligent and observant in your communities. Be wary of suspicious vehicles, and if you have concerns, call 9-1-1. Remember that everyone gets stressed during the holiday season. If someone cuts you off in traffic, breathe deeply and say a prayer for them. The Sheriff’s Office is on the lookout in

unmarked cars for aggressive driving. Also, remember that telephone and Internet scammers are at work. If someone calls claiming to be from your bank or credit card company, don’t give them any information. Thank them for letting you know there’s a problem with your account, hang up, and call the toll-free number on the associated card. If someone calls saying they’re from a charity, thank them for letting you know about their work, but don’t donate over the telephone unless you made the call to a phone number you found. All valid charities will have web sites with telephone numbers that you can look up. Better still, consider giving to the United Way of Martin County. You know that’s a reputable charity helping your neighbors. I’d like to make sure all Martin County citizens and properties are safe during the holiday seasons. Happy holidays and God bless.

Evergreen’s calendar is chockfull of events for both members and non-members. Every Wednesday, an open play shotgun is organized on the green, and several golfing groups including a sizeable ladies’ constituency play regularly. Every Friday evening live music and festivities are extended to the wider community at the club’s grillroom and circular bar. Besides their own club championship in March, the management is endeavoring to attract other series, with a specific focus on junior golf tourneys. In April, Evergreen will host the U.S. Golf Kids Foundation on their championship tour. There are some other junior golfing events in the works, says Mays. So, we’d like to adapt the club to the local community.” In 1996, after almost two decades of golf management, Mays founded Gotham Golf Partners and began acquiring and in some cases rehabilitating golf organizations, amassing within four years a profile of 27 courses across the eastern seaboard, making him the fourth largest owner and operator in the U.S. In 2012, he helped turn around the historical Lulu Country Club with its hundred-year-old course designed by Donald Ross. His other credentials include Director of Golf (1988–1992) at the world-famous Doral Golf Resort in Miami. Mays sold his last two Philadelphia courses in May and presently concerts his entire focus to the 520-acre Evergreen Club, within a half hour from his home in Jupiter. Besides the affordability, the 18hole course offers a wide spectrum of player experience. “It’s a course you can grow old on,” says Fyfe. “It’s adaptable to every skill level.” Each hole offers eight different tees for varying ability. Distances range from black and gold at 6,910 yards to teal at 4,802. It can be a challenging course, but it’s always player-friendly, says Club Manager Alix Dannewitz. Despite the new ownership, the staff has more or less remained the same. The small membership allows the staff to get to know the players personally and cater to their individual expectations. The staff includes among its ranks, Director of Instruction, Jerry Impellittiere, an active PGA professional for 38 years with advanced teaching expertise on all levels including pro. Castle grew up in a family unable to afford the grand light displays he dearly loved. Fortunately, his wife, Beth, and their three children are happy to indulge him in his passion. So are his patient neighbors. The Castles moved to the area about six years ago, and saw the renowned Copeland Christmas display, an elaborate holiday spectacle that includes tours inside the Copeland’s Palm City home. Castle kicked into animated-display mode and that was that. The Copelands, he said, kind of passed the local Christmas-display torch to him for a couple years as they took some time off. This is Castles’ fourth year. The Copelands, too, are back with their holiday show at 1440 S.W. 25th Lane, Fox Run. There’s one thing about the light show Castle won’t discuss: cost. He accepts no donations, as this is his gift to the community. “I don’t, but I do encourage them to donate to charity,” Castle said. However, there is a way to directly repay Castle for the dancing light show. Enjoy it courteously to others. “Remember, it’s a family Christmas light display in a residential neighborhood,” Castle said. The display is at 3089 S.W. Captiva Court, Islesworth. It’s on from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Thursday, then to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. There are loudspeakers playing the accompanying music, and visitors can tune into 88.5 FM. Updates about the display are posted at the Facebook page, A Castle Christmas.

Give a horse for Christmas!

MARTIN COUNTY — Audubon of Martin County (AOMC) is not just an advocacy group. “We also want to be a cornerstone for environmental education,” Chapter President John Nelson said at their 60-year anniversary soirée on Nov. 19. The event, hosted at Port Salerno’s Kane Center, drew an attendance of nearly a hundred members and staff. Canapés and refreshments were provided to guests amid live flute music and a silent auction. Nelson gave a few introductory remarks about the history and trajectory of AOMC and then turned the table over to Paul Gray, Science Coordinator for Audubon Florida, who delivered an anecdotal talk on Florida’s role in the evolution of environmental conservation.

In September, the local chapter introduced their Audubon Field Academy, a birding certificate program spanning eight classes and covering a wide variety of topics. Upon completion, participants will be awarded a birding naturalist designation from the chapter. Seattle Audubon Society’s Master Birding Program has offered a similar certificate since 1988, but until very recently such a program was unheard of on the East Coast. “We’re hoping that as we develop this, Audubon Florida will come on board,” said Nelson in an interview. “We’ve already had chapters all over Florida ask us how they can get involved with this.” AOMC has also recently instituted the Young Auduboners program for children ages seven and older. On December 5, they will launch a monthly survey series called Young Audubon Nature Adventure, which will extend through June 2016 and will address topics such as habitat, food source, and binocular use. Plans are in the works to convert some of the Possum Long Nature

The Preserve, founded in November 1973, boasts 4.7 acres of urban forest sanctuary, roughly half of which was donated by Clifton “Possum” Long, a local science teacher and plant nursery owner who was nicknamed for his tendency to play dead while administering tests to students. In 2011, some of the preserve was adapted into an artificial wetland by a stormwater retrofit project funded with a $125 K matching grant through the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). The wetland not only serves as a habitat for osprey and other water birds but also acts as a drainage system to the local neighborhood. While no blueprints for the educational center have been drawn up yet, the city has been supportive in preliminary talks and AOMC’s board of directors has committed to the project, says Nelson. As well as bolstering their educational component, AOMC is also looking for opportunities to attract more local businesses to Audubon. “We want to show that we can use our environment responsibly to boost economy,” Nelson said at the event and then recognized Sunshine Wildlife Tours’

Kenny Elkins as some of the first to seek business memberships with Audubon. Dr. Gray’s entertaining and edifying account of American naturalist and conservation efforts was the centerpiece of the evening. Gray began by contextualizing John James Audubon’s cultural heritage, at one point quipping that while Alexander Wilson, socalled “Father of American Ornithology”, may have been a better scientist than artist, Audubon was a far better artist than scientist. The main theme of Gray’s speech was Florida’s unique contribution to environmental advocacy and anti-plume legislation. Florida Audubon was founded in 1900, only 14 years after George Bird Grinnell created the national society. According to Gray, Clara Dommerich, at whose house the first Florida Audubon meeting was held, was instrumental as were many women in advocating against plume hunting in Florida. One year later, Florida passed the Audubon Model Law, an early bill that restricted hunting to game birds. In 1903, Pelican Island, a 3-acre preserve in Indian River Lagoon, was established as the first national wildlife refuge to protect the highly coveted egrets and

Wine spectator magazine names local shop “outstanding” for 2015 Patrick McCallister STAFF WRITER

ST. LUCIE WEST — There’re lots of shops for Wine Spectator to choose from, but the accolade went to Bottle Shock. The national bimonthly publication named Bottle Shock on a short list of “outstanding wine shops” in the United States in its December/January issue. “For people who like wine, (Wine Spectator is) the wine bible,” Michael Ayzenberg, owner of Bottle Shock, said. He’d had a bit of advance notice that his shop was going to be on the list. “They called me from California, Los Angeles,” Michael said. “I thought, this is a joke.” Nope, no joke, and little surprise. When Michael starts talking about wine, he takes listeners on a colorful world tour through wine history that eventually heads to his native Ukraine. He grew up near a winery. “For me, it’s about good wine,” he said. Michael, who’d been a plane mechanic, wanted to move from the former Soviet Union, but that got him instead a trip to the Komitet

AUDUBON from page 15 other birds from poachers. Gray went on to describe the next few decades, in which game wardens like Guy Bradley and naturalists like Frank Chapman fought an uphill battle to enforce and endorse the new anti-hunting laws. Finally, Gray presented his historical account as a foil for recent developments in Florida water management — also a hot topic in 1955, when AOMC was founded, according to Nelson. Florida’s Water and Land Conservation Amendment I was passed last year by a 75 per cent vote. The amendment entails that 33 per cent of Florida’s documentary stamp tax is levied to maintain and purchase land and water for preservation. One year after its adoption, there are already allegations that some of the Amendment I funds have been misbudgeted. Gray reminded club members that it took 60 years for the anti-plume laws to be effected, from legislation to enforcement. We should expect no overnight success with the current water management crisis, he advised. Recently in 2013, AOMC agreed to steward public access to the Lakeside Ranch Stormwater Treatment Area, a 2700-acre wetland in Martin County that is designed to reduce Lake Okeechobee’s phosphorus load by up to 19 metric

tons annually. Last month, a southern annex to the STA was contracted by SFWMD. Because the habitat is also home to over 100 different species of birds, Audubon of Martin County hosts public tours and bird counting events at the site. Both Gray and Nelson stressed how important the Florida habitat still is for bird life. Because of migratory patterns, we are responsible for the safety of “two or three continents worth of birds,” as Gray put it – let alone 1100 or more bald eagles currently nesting here, the second largest population in the lower 48 states. If our own environment is unimportant to us, said Nelson, then think of the future. Our environment will be here long after we are gone. It is our responsibility to take care of it for our children, he said. A lot has changed since 1955, when the chapter was founded. Peregrine falcons, brown pelicans, and bald eagles were all endangered by wide application of DDT which compromised the survival of their eggs. Once the harmful pesticide was outlawed in 1973, a process that Audubon helped facilitate, these bird populations began to make a comeback. In 1999,the peregrine falcon was removed from the U.S. Endangered Species List, the brown pelican in 2009.

TREASURE COAST — What do mercury levels in dolphins say about mercury levels in humans? Quite a bit, according to a new study by scientists at FAU Harbor Branch, which sheds light on the potential dangers of consuming locally caught seafood? This is the first time that researchers have closed the loop between marine mammal and human health, by taking findings from their research and applying them to explore the potential risks facing humans living in the same region. The study centers on dolphins living in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL), Florida and humans who live along the estuary and consume much of the same seafood as the dolphins. Initial studies of IRL dolphins showed high levels

The most toxic form of mercury known as methylmercury builds up in fish, shellfish, and animals that eat fish, and are the main sources of mercury exposure in humans. The findings from this study, published in the current issue of the journal Veterinary Sciences,

showed that the cross-section of people tested also had high levels of mercury and that much of that mercury was due to consumption of locally obtained fish and shellfish. More than half of the participants in the study had a concentration of mercury in their hair, which was greater than the guideline for exposure defined by

Dukes make Christmas special Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

STUART – Luke and Bo Duke are coming to town. Tom Wopat and John Schneider, who played the brothers in the television series “The Dukes of Hazzard,” have had success with music and acting careers far beyond the popular television series. In 2014, they decided to release a holiday album, “Home for Christmas,” which they funded by raising $72,000 through a grassroots Kickstarter campaign. Now they are reuniting for a holiday show, “Return of the Dukes Christmas,” which comes to the Lyric Theatre Dec. 16 for two shows. Wopat, who played Luke, called to talk about the show and his career, which has included two Tony nominations for appearances on Broadway in “Annie Get Your Gun” and Harvey Fierstein’s “A Catered Affair.” He has recorded eight albums, including a tribute to composer Harold Arlen. “I was asked to be on an Arlen tour,” he said. “It was the 100th anniversary of his birthday. I thought, ‘If I’m going to be on tour, I want to have some product. We produced an album on the low down, quickly and inexpensively. It captured the big range of Arlen, songs like ‘Dis-

sertations on the State of Bliss,’ and so many things he wrote. It’s amazing stuff. I didn’t want to do ‘Over the Rainbow,’ but how can you not? It’s such an amazing song. It was a lot of fun.” Wopat said the idea for the Christmas tour was his. “I had long wanted to do something with him,” Wopat said. “We have performed in public over the years. I decided (we’d do it) if I could talk him into it. He spent four or five days in New York City and we did the rest. It turned out better than the sum of its parts.” Wopat said that having the record made the tour a good idea. “If you’re going to have a record, you may as well do it live,” he said. Now you have to perform live to sell stuff. I like the live performances the best.” What can the audience expect from Bo and Luke Duke? “A lot of John and Tom Foolery,” Wopat said. “We love each other like brothers and more than that. There’s a chemistry there we treasure. We’re careful not to overstep any bounds. We really work well together. He likes me to be the adult and I like being the adult until I don’t.” The boys will come to Stuart with a trio of musicians and a lot of songs. “The music is terrific,” he said. “There are songs you know and some you never heard of. I do a

It’s great. There are some new country songs, like ‘On a Quiet Christmas Morn,’ and ‘Even the Snow Falls for You.’ That’s a really country song title. I do a version of ‘Baby, It’s Cold Outside’ that’s ‘Johnny, It’s Cold Outside.’”

Wopat said the show is perfect for the entire family. “It’s very inclusive,” he said. “It’s appropriate for everybody. It’s user friendly. It’s a fun show to anyone who’s tangentially involved with the Dukes or likes jazz or Christmas music. We

The major human health risk results from high exposure during pregnancy, since the developing nervous system of a fetus is highly vulnerable to environmental insults such as maternal exposure to mercury. StarStruck Theatre to produce HONK Jr. Shelley Koppel STAFF WRITER

skoppel@YourVoiceWeekly.com

MARTIN COUNTY — We live in a time where we are inundated with images and expectations of what is perceived to be “attractive” and “normal.” From movies and television shows to magazines and TV advertisements, it is difficult to escape the bombardment of messages telling us what to wear, and how to look and behave. From birth, these societal standards have been imposed upon us, oftentimes subliminally. It is easy to fall into the trap of judging others as well as ourselves by these faulty norms. This holiday season, StarStruck Academy & Theatre invites you to break out of this societal trap. On December 11 and 12 StarStruck will present HONK Jr., a one act musical about embracing the human traits each of us have that make us unique or different — that sets us apart from the norm. Loosely based on the classic tale “The Ugly Duckling by Hans Christian Anderson,” HONK Jr. will not only entertain audiences, but will remind them about what is truly important — being yourself. StarStruck Theatre, Inc., a reg-

talent of these students is of a caliber, quality and maturity of adult performers and the set, costumes and production elements are equal and often exceed that of a regional community theatre. Our junior shows can be enjoyed by the entire community and we have patrons who travel from throughout the Treasure Coast and Palm Beaches to enjoy them. HONK Jr. is the perfect show for both seasoned and first time theatre goers, and a great way to

introduce your children or grandchildren to the theatre,” Jones added. A notable example of the exceptional offerings at StarStruck was their most recent production of Children of Eden Jr., which was a pilot for two Broadway icons, Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Pippin, Godspell) and John Caird (Les Miserables). They flew in from New York and London on Novem-

MARTIN COUNTY — Lee Lessack wears several hats. The vocalist, who tours with the vocal group, “3 Men and a Baby…Grand!” also owns a booking agency and represents Broadway stars such as Chita Rivera, Lea Salonga and Tom Wopat. “I found that a lot of venues can’t afford a Chita Rivera concert,” he said. “Every year, while I’m pitching my Broadway names, I try to come up with tribute or thematic concerts, like the music of Johnny Mercer or Irving Berlin or Sinatra. They are remarkable and I can sell (the shows) at a price point that gets me into venues that can’t afford other stars.” Lessack came up with the idea of a Simon and Garfunkel tribute show, but he felt he needed a bigger hook, something more specific. “What if we re-create the identical set list they played at Central Park, re-create that moment in time?” he asked. “There’s a series there.” The result is “Live in Central Park (Revisited): Simon and Garfunkel.” It captures the reunion concert the duo performed in Central Park in 1981. After 10 years apart, the pair came together to raise money

for the restoration of Central Park, which was in disrepair. The concert attracted more than 500,000 people and set a record as the 7th largest concert attendance in history. Lessack, as Garfunkel, joins Johnny Rodgers as Simon on stage at the Lyric Theatre Dec. 17. The show is one of three Central Park shows he has put together: there is also an Andrea Bocelli at Central Park and a Barbra Streisand in Central Park. Lessack stressed that he and Rodgers are not assuming the personas of Simon and Garfunkel. There will be no big hair. “We’re using an identical song list, song for song,” he said. “I’m very excited that there was a lot of interest. Most of what I do is ‘The Great American Songbook.’ I was thrilled to get the interest I did (in this.) Personally these songs are standards.” Lessack is an alumnus of the American Academy of Dramatic Arts. He has long had a love affair with Broadway. “We lived in Philadelphia, and for my Bar Mitzvah, I saw my first Broadway show, ‘Pippin.’ It made me want to be in the arts.” That show was written by Stephen Schwartz, who also wrote “Wicked,” and “Godspell.” Schwartz has become one of Lessack’s fans.

Lee Lessack “He’s a great supporter of emerging talent,” Lessack said. “He’s been generous to me over the years.” Lessack recently worked on the soundtrack recording of “Geppetto,” Disney’s new television movie. It was written by Schwartz, who specifically asked for Lessack. Now, though, he is focused on the large body of work of Simon and Garfunkel. “I get to sing “Bridge over Trouble Waters,” he said. “We give some of the context (to the songs), but not a lot because there is a lot of music. We talk about what was going on in the country in 1981. The first IBM personal computer came out, Reagan was shot and Jennifer Hudson and Beyoncé were born. Then we talk about them as songwriters. There’s some fun stuff and

HISTORY OF HIGH TEA

The British tradition of High Tea began in the mid 1700s as an afternoon meal usually served between 3 and 4 o’clock. Initially, it was a meal for the working man, taken standing up or sitting on tall stools, thus ‘high’. Tea with cakes, scones, even cheese on toast would have been served. Gradually, this afternoon meal became more known as an important event on the social calendars of Ladies and Gentlemen, rather than a meal for the working man. For the ‘Leisure Classes’, High Tea served a practical purpose, allowing Ladies and Gentleman the opportunity of a substantial meal before attending the theatre, or playing cards. (It might be a long time before Evening Supper could be taken!) It was around this time that one John Montagu, the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, had the idea of placing meat and other fillings between two slices of bread. Thus, the High Tea sandwich was created. Courtesy of the British Empire, the tradition of High Tea spread across the globe, arriving at The Carrington Hotel in the mid 1880’s, where it has remained a popular event ever since.
